Abstract

Shallow magmatic intrusions are prevalent in volcanic settings worldwide. Understanding how these intrusions interact and influence their volcanic host rocks is therefore relevant to many engineering geology, geothermal, and volcanological applications. In this study, we present the most comprehensive dataset for a shallow intrusion and its host rock in a volcanic setting to date, detailing the mechanical and physical properties of volcanic rocks from Pinnacle Ridge, Mt. Ruapehu, New Zealand. Based on the geomechanical properties of 194 measured samples, we identify seven geotechnical units: (1) unaltered dense coherent lava, (2) altered dense coherent lava, (3) unaltered brecciated lava margin, (4) altered brecciated lava margin, (5) unaltered intrusion, (6) altered intrusion, and (7) hydrothermal veining. We detail the mineralogy (andesite compositions ranging from primary to an advanced argillic alteration assemblage), porosity (0.7–31%), permeability (10 −21 –10 −12  m 2 ), elastic wave velocities (1994–5615 m/s), uniaxial compressive strength (1–332 MPa) of these geotechnical units. Our laboratory analyses indicate that primary lithology is the predominant control on the physical and mechanical properties of the geotechnical units. Additionally, the data suggest that there is a correlation between distance to the largest intrusion; this is particularly evident for the measurements on the brecciated lava margin samples. Towards the largest intrusion, this breccia shows decreasing porosity (30.92 to 5.49%) and permeability (10 −12 to 10 −17  m 2 ) and increasing elastic wave velocities (1994 to 4157 m/s) and uniaxial compressive strength (3 to 61 MPa). Thin-section analysis suggests that these correlations are due to mineral precipitation within fractures and pores in the brecciated lava margins. These correlations with distance to the largest intrusion are not shared by the altered intrusions or dense coherent lavas. We suggest that the high primary permeability of the unaltered breccia facilitated efficient hydrothermal fluid circulation and mineral precipitation adjacent to the intrusion. The other geotechnical units are less affected because hydrothermal fluid flow, alteration, and mineral precipitation were limited due to low initial permeability (10 −21 –10 −16  m 2 ). Our study shows that the initial properties of the host rock (i.e. porosity and permeability) control the extent of hydrothermal alteration and the susceptibility to modifications of rock geomechanical properties. Modifications to porosity and permeability can influence edifice-scale behaviour; for example, a reduction in permeability can result in pore pressure augmentation, which exerts a primary control on volcanic slope stability, seismicity, and eruptive behaviour. This study provides the most comprehensive and complete geomechanical properties data suite on a shallow intrusion in volcanic host rock to date and will support monitoring and modelling of volcanic hazards associated with shallow igneous intrusions. Abstract

The province of Manabí is located in the Ecuadorian coastal region. Frequent occurrence of geo-dynamic phenomena and processes related to slopes and hills activities is conditional to the topographic, geologic, tectonic, hydrologic, seismic and geo-technical characteristics of the area. To mitigate and control these occurrences, it has been suggested to classify soils and rocks from the geotechnical point of view based on the tendency to deterioration; hence, providing a new approach to the geotechnical assessment on hills and slopes. The proposed classification is based on the modified geotechnical indicators A, B, C and D, with varying marks and weight: A (Spacing of rock cracks and opening), B(Lineal resistance to intact rock compression (MPa)), C (Water activity) and D (Meteorization level, as per ISRM). The proposed methodology facilitated more detailed information on the geotechnical conditions, soil pattern and identification of instability factors; for which measures have to be applied for the stabilization and control of altering processes in rocks and slopes in the area of investigation. 6. Geotechnical classification and characterisation of materials for stability analyses of large volcanic slopes

Abstract

Abstract: The main challenge faced by scientist studying large volcanic landslides is appropriate geomechanical characterisation of volcanic materials. Regardless of its significance, published data is scarce and does not present standard classifications or procedures. Herein a new global unifying geotechnical classification of volcanic materials encompassing geotechnical units potentially found in volcanic areas is proposed. Volcanic materials are divided into four main geotechnical units: lavas, autoclastic breccias, pyroclastic rocks and volcanic soils, which are further subdivided on the basis of hydrothermal alteration, welding and interlocking. A combination of new data from the slopes of Teide stratovolcano in Tenerife, Spain, and normalised reworked data from a very extensive literature review are presented for each geotechnical unit. Most rock matrix strength measurements in Tenerife were carried out with indirect methods (Schmidt hammer and point load tests) due to the remoteness of most outcrops and the abruptness of volcanic terrain. Rock mass quality was assessed in terms of the geological strength index (GSI). Lavas and strongly welded pyroclastic rock units have the highest uniaxial compression strengths (σ ci =107 and 82 MPa, respectively) although these values are largely affected by hydrothermal alteration. Lavas have a worse rock mass quality (GSI=55) than strongly welded pyroclastic rocks (GSI=80). Special emphasis has been placed on studying autoclastic breccia and weakly welded and/or interlocked pyroclastic rock units, which despite having been classified as disintegrated granular units in the past, are here classified as rock masses due to the high degree of interlocking between clasts. They present relatively weak rock matrices (σ ci =29 and 13 MPa, respectively) but good rock mass qualities (GSI=60 and 80). Volcanic soils are the weakest materials found within edifices and therefore appear to be significant in the generation of large slope instabilities. The effects of high temperatures and pressures are discussed, as are the problems which arise when calculating equivalent linear Mohr–Coulomb geotechnical parameters for those rock masses which are characterised as Hoek and Brown materials. Abstract

A caracterização geotécnica de maciços rochosos é um dos aspectos mais importantes para o sucesso de um empreendimento mineiro. Desta forma é preciso ter um investimento significativo para a aquisição de dados durante a fase de pesquisa mineral, bem como um grande esforço para manipular os dados obtidos. Para se determinar as propriedades de um maciço, é necessário estabelecer, primeiramente, as diferenças entre rochas intacta e maciço rochoso. O comportamento mecânico destas duas classes pode apresentar grandes diferenças quando analisadas em laboratório. Um dos métodos mais utilizados no ambiente mineiro para classificar o maciço rochoso é o Rock Mass Rating (RMR), sistema que consiste em ranquear os seguintes parâmetros: Rock Quality Designation (RQD), espaçamento entre fraturas, resistência a compressão simples (UCS), qualidade das descontinuidades e presença de água no maciço. Este trabalho tem por utilizar a geoestatística para primeiro se conhecer algumas das particularidades destas variáveis, tais como a não linearidade, o comportamento em diferentes direções e a união de diferentes populações e posteriormente usar as técnicas de krigagem para criar um modelo geotécnico tridimensional. A geoestatística nos permite obter uma estimativa mais precisa e ter um maior conhecimento da incerteza do fenômeno, entretanto o RMR, por não ser uma variável aditiva, não se pode aplicar diretamente o uso das técnicas de krigagem. Assim uma metodologia é proposta para se estimar cada um dos parâmetros, ranqueá-los de acordo com seus valores e por fim obter a classificação RMR através do somatório destes ranques. Os resultados são comparados com a geologia estrutural da região de estudo, para se analisar a relação desta com a qualidade do maciço. A metodologia proposta apresentou uma melhora significante na qualidade de informações no local estimado e mostrou ser uma tentativa consistente para se criar um modelo geotécnico 3D. The geotechnical characterization of rock masses is one of the most important aspects for the success of a mining enterprise. In this way, it is necessary to have a significant investment to acquire data during the mineral research phase and to make a great effort to manipulate and interpret the obtained data. In order to know a rock, it is necessary to establish the differences of properties between rock intact and rocky mass. The mechanical behavior of these two classes can present great differences when analyzed in the laboratory. One of the methods most used in the mining environment to classify the rock mass is the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system, which consists of ranking the following parameters: Rock Quality Designation (RQD), fracture spacing, simple compression strength (UCS) quality of the discontinuities and presence of water in the massif. This work has to use geostatistics to first know some of the peculiarities of these variables, such as nonlinearity, behavior in different directions and the union of different populations and later to use kriging techniques to create a three - dimensional geotechnical model. The geostatistics allows us to obtain a more accurate estimate and to have a better knowledge of the uncertainty of the phenomenon, however, the RMR is not an additive variable, so cannot be directly applied the use of kriging techniques. Thus a methodology is proposed to estimate each of the parameters, rank them according to their values and finally obtain the RMR classification through the sum of these ranks. The results are compared with the structural geology of the study region, in order to analyze its relation with the quality of the rock mass. The proposed methodology presented a significant improvement in the quality of information at the estimated site and proved to be a consistent attempt to create a 3D geotechnical model.

U disertaciji su prikazani rezultati laboratorijskih ispitivanja uzoraka komunalnog otpada dobijeni u aparatima za direktno smicanje i edometarskim aparatima (jedan edometarski aparat konstruisan je za potrebe ove disertacije). Sva ispitivanja su izvršena na veštački pripremljenim uzorcima, uz uvažavanje preporuka koje se odnose na dimenzije korišćenih aparata i veličinu najvećih frakcija u uzorku (EN 1997-2, ASTM 2007-a, 2007-b). Za formiranje uzoraka korišćen je komunalni otpad različite starosti, uzet sa dve deponije u Srbiji (Ade Huje u Beogradu i gradske deponije u Novom Sadu). Interpretacija rezultata dobijenih iz opita direktnog smicanja, obavljena je korišćenjem pravolinijske (Kulon-Mor-Tercagijeve jednačine čvrstoće smicanja) i krivolinijske anvelope loma pomoću logaritamske funkcije, a po prvi put je za komunalni otpad definisana i krivolinijska anvelopa loma preko hiperboličke funkcije. Kako su ispitivanja vršena na komunalnom otpadu različite starosti, zaključeno je da sa degradacijom opada i čvrstoća smicanja. Na osnovu dobijenih rezultata iz edometarskih opita, određene su: minimalne i maksimalne vrednosti indeksa sekundarne kompresije (Cα) i modifikovanog indeksa sekundarne kompresije (Cα'), indeksa primarne kompresije (Cc) i modifikovanog indeksa primarne kompresije (Cc') kao i modula stišljivosti (Mv). Verifikacija parametara čvrstoće smicanja i deformabilnosti, obavljena je na osnovu poređenja sa rezultatima koji su prikazani u literaturi. Uspostavljene zavisnosti koje se odnose na čvrstoću smicanja, prikazane u vidu pravolinijske ili krivolinijskih funkcija logaritamskog i hiperboličkog oblika, dale su dobro slaganje pri normalnim efektivnim naponima σ'n < 150 kPa. In this paper a geotechnical-siesmic amplification classification based on geological data is proposed for the Murcia region, (SE Spain). The structural damages caused during earthquake are controlled by local geological condition especially surface geology conditions and topography. The presence of some kind of soil type could produce increase in the intensity as a consequence of seismic wave amplification. The factor of amplification which can duplicate or triplicate the seismic waves is directly related to the geotechnical (dynamic) properties of geological materials. Regarding this fact, we have carried out geotechnical classification of the geological materials, in order to see their possible contribution to this local ground amplification. According to this classification the amplification effect in the earthquake area varies from nil, where bedrock is exposed to high where Plio-Quaternary fluvial and alluvial sediments are present
