Abstract

We study the spin-$S$ Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice for $S\!=\!1/2$, $1$ and $3/2$, by using the coupled cluster method (CCM) of microscopic quantum many-body theory. This system is one of the earliest extensions of the Kitaev model and is believed to contain two extended spin liquid phases for any value of the spin quantum number $S$. We show that the CCM delivers accurate estimates for the phase boundaries of these spin liquid phases, as well as other transition points in the phase diagram. Moreover, we find evidence of two unexpected narrow phases for $S\!=\!1/2$, one sandwiched between the zigzag and ferromagnetic phases and the other between the N\'eel and the stripy phases. The results establish the CCM as a versatile numerical technique that can capture the strong quantum-mechanical fluctuations that are inherently present in generalized Kitaev models with competing bond-dependent anisotropies., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures. 3. Multi-$Q$ magnetic phases from frustration and chiral interactions

Abstract

We investigate the effect of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions in the planar pyrochlore (checkerboard) antiferromagnet, one of the paradigmatic models of spin frustration, and establish the classical phase diagram using a combination of analytical and numerical approaches. While anisotropic interactions generally tend to remove the frustration, here we show that a high degree of frustration survives in a large region of the phase diagram. In conjunction with the fixed handedness introduced by the DM anisotropy, this spawns a cascade of incommensurate and double-twisted multi-domain phases, consisting of spatially intertwined domains of the underlying competing phases of the isotropic frustrated point. The results underpin a novel mechanism of generating multi-Q phases in systems that combine high degree of frustration and chiral interactions., Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

Turbocharger blade vibration experiments are important tasks and assist in identifying vibration parameters. Blade vibration amplitudes vary from blade to blade due to the casting process causing different blade geometry. Blade tuning can increase the risk of failure due to the frequency linkage between the blades. Most commonly the blades on the turbine side are designed identical but during casting, blades are developed non identical, and the system is called mistuned. This study describes the procedure and the methodology developed to form a turbine wheel model and fit it with experimental data with the aim to rank the blades in terms of how responsive they are. The methodology suggests that the process is done for each desired wheel in a population and once the parameters are identified, some of the parameters can be used for other wheels of the same type. To achieve the objective, this study analyses multiple vibration excitation and measurement methods in order to determine which method is the best to be used. As the turbine wheel is a very complex system, the turbine blade was modelled as a cantilever beam and an optimisation method was developed to fit the experimental data with the model data. From the optimised parameters found based on the cantilever beam section; a paddle wheel rotor was formed with the known beam parameters and a core with unknown parameters. The model's core (hub) parameters were identified using the optimisation process developed by using a rotor system with 4 beams. Finally, the model was expanded to match the turbine wheel blade number. On a parallel workstream, multiple excitation and measurement methods were investigated, and the best methods were chosen to develop a final rig (best method in terms of repeatability, reproducibility, continuous excitation, and dwell excitation). This thesis developed a new process (method) for frequency and peak response identification of damped and undamped turbine blades. The main contribution involves cantilever beam-core model structures and experimental processes for identification of the model parameters and a final test rig is proposed as a recommendation.

Abstract

One of the major open problems in symmetric cryptanalysis is to discover new specif i c types of invariant properties which can hold for a larger number of rounds of a block cipher. We have Generalised Linear Cryptanalysis (GLC) and Partitioning Cryptanalysis (PC). Due to double-exponential combinatorial explosion of the number of possible invariant properties systematic exploration is not possible and extremely few positive working examples of GLC are known. Our answer is to work with polynomial algebraic invariants which makes partitions more intelligible. We have developed a constructive algebraic approach which is about making sure that a certain combination of polynomial equations is zero. We work with an old block cipher from 1980s which has particularly large hardware complexity compared to modern ciphers e.g. AES. However all this complexity is not that useful if we are able to construct powerful non-linear invariants which work for any number of rounds. A key feature of our invariant attacks is that we are able to completely eliminate numerous state and key bits. We also construct invariants for the (presumably stronger) KT1 keys. T-310 is a cipher that was used for encryption of governmental communications in East Germany during the final years of the Cold War. Due to its complexity and the encryption process,there was no published attack for a period of more than 40 years until 2018 by Nicolas T. Courtois et al. in [10]. In this thesis we study the so called 'long term keys' that were used in the cipher, in order to expose weaknesses which will assist the design of various attacks on T-310.

10. Gapless Triplet Superconductivity in Magnetically Polarized Media

Abstract

We reveal that in a magnetically polarized medium, a specific commensurate triplet pair density wave (TPDW) superconducting (SC) state, the staggered d-wave $\Pi$-triplet state, may coexist with homogeneous triplet SC states and even dominate eliminating them under generic conditions. When only this TPDW SC state is present, we have the remarkable phenomenon of gapless superconductivity. This may explain part of the difficulties in the realization of the engineered localized Majorana fermion modes for topological quantum computation. 16. Foreign market entry and exit process : the case of BP lubricants in Europe and Africa

Abstract

Foreign market entry strategies are considered critical for organisations looking to expand their operations to other countries abroad, as these require significant commitments, financial and other, which are more often than not, irreversible in the short and medium term. It is not surprising, therefore, that the area of foreign market entry is receiving considerable and growing academic attention over the last twenty years. In fact, the subject of international market entry is the third most researched area in international management, following the related fields of foreign market investments and internationalization. The overall aim of this thesis is to explore, analyse, and understand the foreign market entry and exit process that the business unit of BP Lubricants in Europe and Africa is following and identify strengths and weaknesses. A systematic literature review showed that there is a plethora of empirical evidence on foreign market research that provide useful insights into this important strategic process, however, the findings are often conflicting which makes it difficult to draw conclusions that can be generalized. The review identified the main theories and constructs for foreign market entry and highlighted certain gaps in the theory that the research evidence from this study has aimed to bridge. Using case study methodology and exploring in depth two contrasting cases (the Libyan entry and the Cyprus exit), the foreign market entry and exit processes within BP Lubricants in Europe and Africa have been established. Collection of evidence was achieved through three different methods, questionnaire, focused interviews, and documentation review. The detailed analysis of the foreign market entry process that BP Lubricants in Europe and Africa follows, has led to the development of a model that describes the process. This model depicts the complex nature of the process and recognises that a number of variables play an important role in the decision making process.

17. Competing Superconducting States in Strong Ferromagnets

Abstract

We report results from a systematic study of the competition of exotic triplet pair density wave (PDW) superconductivity (SC) with homogeneous (zero pair momentum) SC in strongly polarized media such as half metallic systems. From the two different PDW states allowed by symmetry in this background only one may dominate or even coexist with homogeneous SC. We propose a direct experimental identification of PDW SC in this context. Our results suggest that these exotic states may plausibly emerge in heterostructures involving proximity of SC with half-metallic CrO$_2$ where induced SC is established in the half metallic region and in strongly ferromagnetic superconductors., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

19. Coexistence of CDW with staggered superconductivity in a ferromagnetic material

Abstract

In usual superconductivity (SC), the pairs have zero total momentum irrespective of their symmetry. Staggered SC would involve, instead, pairs with a finite commensurate total momentum, but such exotic states have never been proven to be realized in nature. Here we study for the first time the influence of particle-hole asymmetry on the competition of staggered SC with Charge Density Waves (CDW) in a ferromagnetic medium. We obtain unprecedented situations in which CDW and staggered SC coexist. We also obtain cases of a SC dome near the collapse of a CDW state as well as cascades of transitions that exhibit remarkable similarities with the pressure phase diagram in UGe$_2$ suggesting that SC in this material may be staggered coexisting and competing with a CDW state., Comment: added references, epl version

As the turbine wheel is a very complex system, the turbine blade was modelled as a cantilever beam and an optimisation method was developed to fit the experimental data with the model data. From the optimised parameters found based on the cantilever beam section; a paddle wheel rotor was formed with the known beam parameters and a core with unknown parameters. The model’s core (hub) parameters were identified using the optimisation process developed by using a rotor system with 4 beams. Finally, the model was expanded to match the turbine wheel blade number. On a parallel workstream, multiple excitation and measurement methods were investigated, and the best methods were chosen to develop a final rig (best method in terms of repeatability, reproducibility, continuous excitation, and dwell excitation). This thesis developed a new process (method) for frequency and peak response identification of damped and undamped turbine blades. The main contribution involves cantilever beam-core model structures and experimental processes for identification of the model parameters and a final test rig is proposed as a recommendation.

Appropriate establishment and maintenance of cell polarity is essential for normal development and homeostasis. The vast majority of human cancers originate from epithelial tissues and tumour cell invasion and metastasis are the major cause of mortality in human cancers. Invading cells demonstrate loss of cell polarity, loss of epithelial cell-cell adhesions and tissue disorganisation. We examine the growing evidence linking loss of apicobasal polarity with tumour progression.

Abstract

Approximately 90% of cancer-related deaths can be attributed to a tumour's ability to spread. We have identified CG7379, the fly orthologue of human ING1, as a potent invasion suppressor. ING1 is a type II tumour suppressor with well-established roles in the transcriptional regulation of genes that control cell proliferation, response to DNA damage, oncogene-induced senescence and apoptosis. Recent work suggests a possible role for ING1 in cancer cell invasion and metastasis, but the molecular mechanism underlying this observation is lacking. Our results show that reduced expression of CG7379 promotes invasion in vivo in Drosophila, reduces the junctional localization of several adherens and septate junction components, and severely disrupts cell-cell junction architecture. Similarly, ING1 knockdown significantly enhances invasion in vitro and disrupts E-cadherin distribution at cell-cell junctions. A transcriptome analysis reveals that loss of ING1 affects the expression of several junctional and cytoskeletal modulators, confirming ING1 as an invasion suppressor and a key regulator of cell-cell junction integrity.
