This paper presents an academia-industry joint study concerning effective methods to estimate and quantify the effect of vortex generator installation on wind power production. This problem has presented a challenge to the wind industry, because (a) vortex generator installation may lead to a moderate 1–5 % extra power production, but this level of improvement is difficult to be accurately detected; and (b) it is equally difficult to validate the estimated effect of vortex generator installation because a controlled experiment is practically impossible to conduct to provide a credible baseline. An academic institute and a wind technology company team up to tackle this challenge. The two teams develop their own version of quantification methods, which are profoundly different. The academic method uses 10-min data and makes use of both power and environmental data, whereas the company method uses high-frequency data via primarily a direct power comparison approach that relies less on the environmental data. When applying the respective methods to two inland wind farms, each of which presents four pairs of turbines, the quantification results from the two methods are surprisingly consistent. We believe the consistent outcome presents a strong case of cross validation, testifying to the respective method's capability and credibility.

The wind industry needs airfoil data for ranges of angle of attack (AoA) much wider than those of aviation applications, since large portions of the blades may operate in stalled conditions for a significant part of their lives. Vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) are even more affected by this need, since data sets across the full incidence range of 180 deg are necessary for a correct performance prediction at different tip-speed ratios. However, the relevant technical literature lacks data in deep and poststall regions for nearly every airfoil. Within this context, the present study shows experimental and numerical results for the well-known NACA 0021 airfoil, which is often used for Darrieus VAWT design. Experimental data were obtained through dedicated wind tunnel measurements of a NACA 0021 airfoil with surface pressure taps, which provided further insight into the pressure coefficient distribution across a wide range of AoAs. The measurements were conducted at two different Reynolds numbers (Re = 140 k and Re = 180 k): each experiment was performed multiple times to ensure repeatability. Dynamic AoA changes were also investigated at multiple reduced frequencies. Moreover, dedicated unsteady numerical simulations were carried out on the same airfoil shape to reproduce both the static polars of the airfoil and some relevant dynamic AoA variation cycles tested in the experiments. The solved flow field was then exploited both to get further insight into the flow mechanisms highlighted by the wind tunnel tests and to provide correction factors to discard the influence of the experimental apparatus, making experiments representative of open-field behavior. The present study is then thought to provide the scientific community with high quality, low-Reynolds airfoil data, which may enable in the near future a more effective design of Darrieus VAWTs.

After almost 20 years of absence from research agendas, interest in the vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) technology is presently increasing again, after the research stalled in the mid 90's in favor of horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs). However, due to the lack of research in past years, there are a significantly lower number of design and certification tools available, many of which are underdeveloped if compared to the corresponding tools for HAWTs. To partially fulfill this gap, a structural finite element analysis (FEA) model, based on the Open Source multiphysics library PROJECT::CHRONO, was recently integrated with the lifting line free vortex wake (LLFVW) method inside the Open Source wind turbine simulation code QBlade and validated against numerical and experimental data of the SANDIA 34 m rotor. In this work, some details about the newly implemented nonlinear structural model and its coupling to the aerodynamic solver are first given. Then, in a continuous effort to assess its accuracy, the code capabilities were here tested on a small-scale, fast-spinning (up to 450 rpm) VAWT. The study turbine is a helix shaped, 1 kW Darrieus turbine, for which other numerical analyses were available from a previous study, including the results coming from both a one-dimensional beam element model and a more sophisticated shell element model. The resulting data represented an excellent basis for comparison and validation of the new aero-elastic coupling in QBlade. Based on the structural and aerodynamic data of the study turbine, an aero-elastic model was then constructed. A purely aerodynamic comparison to experimental data and a blade element momentum (BEM) simulation represented the benchmark for QBlade aerodynamic performance. Then, a purely structural analysis was carried out and compared to the numerical results from the former. After the code validation, an aero-elastically coupled simulation of a rotor self-start has been performed to demonstrate the capabilities of the newly developed model to predict the highly nonlinear transient aerodynamic and structural rotor response.

The wind industry needs reliable and accurate airfoil polars to properly predict wind turbine performance, especially during the initial design phase. Medium- and low-fidelity simulations directly depend on the accuracy of the airfoil data and even more so if e.g. dynamic effects are modeled. This becomes crucial if the blades of a turbine operate under stalled conditions for a significant part of the turbine’s lifetime. In addition, the design process of vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) needs data across the full range of angles of attack between 0 and 180 deg. Lift, drag and surface pressure distributions of a NACA 0021 airfoil equipped with surface pressure taps were investigated based on time-resolved pressure measurements. The present study discusses full range static polars and several dynamic sinusoidal pitching configurations covering two Reynolds numbers Re = 140k and 180 k, and different incidence ranges: near stall, post stall and deep stall. Various bi-stable flow phenomena are discussed based on high frequency measurements revealing large lift-fluctuations in the post and deep stall regime that exceed the maximum lift of the static polars and are not captured by averaged measurements. Detailed surface pressure distributions are discussed to provide further insight into the flow conditions and pressure development during dynamic motion. The experimental data provided within the present paper is dedicated to the scientific community for calibration and reference purposes, which in the future may lead to higher accuracy in performance predictions during the design process of wind turbines.

Wind turbine industry has a special need for accurate post stall airfoil data. While literature often covers incidence ranges [−10deg,+25deg] smaller machines experience a range of up to 90 deg for horizontal axis and up to 360 deg for vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs). The post stall data of airfoils is crucial to improve the prediction of the start-up behavior as well as the performance at low tip speed ratios. The present paper analyzes and discusses the performance of the symmetrical NACA 0021 airfoil at three Reynolds numbers (Re = 100k, 140k, and 180k) through 180 deg incidence. The typical problem of blockage within a wind tunnel was avoided using an open test section. The experiments were conducted in terms of surface pressure distribution over the airfoil for a tripped and a baseline configuration. The pressure was used to gain lift, pressure drag, moment data. Further investigations with positive and negative pitching revealed a second hysteresis loop in the deep post stall region resulting in a difference of 0.2 in moment coefficient and 0.5 in lift.

This paper presents a strategy to model the aerodynamic Gurney flap effect on two-dimensional airfoils and subsequently on the rotor blade performance of horizontal axis wind turbines. The first part consists of the parametric investigation of 26 airfoil polar data-sets, derived from different, but comparable, wind tunnel experiments. They are evaluated and processed in terms of the lift and drag increase caused by Gurney flaps in comparison to each Baseline configuration. Consequently, a model is developed, transforming Baseline- into Gurney flap polar data for varying flap-heights. The results of the emerging Gurney Flap Polar Calculator are validated against the experimental lift and drag curves. In the second part, the blade design of the NREL 5 MW Reference Turbine is modified by implementing polar data-sets of varying Gurney flap-heights, which are imported into the rotor simulation software QBlade. Thereupon, blade optimization strategies are examined regarding the two main Gurney flap applications on rotor blades: the retrofit and the design solution. The optimized retrofit solution on existing blades indicates power performance improvements, albeit at the expense of increasing structural loads. The optimized design solution on to-be-constructed blades, on the other hand, suggests chord-length reductions, while keeping the performance characteristics on a similar or even enhanced level. It is concluded that aerodynamic improvements are achieved by relatively small Gurney flap-heights, which are applied at specific blade positions.

During the commissioning and stand-still cycles of wind turbines, the rotor is often stopped or even locked leaving the rotor blades at a standstill. When the blades are at a stand still, angles of attack on the blades can be very high and it is therefore possible that they experience vortex induced vibrations. This experiment and analysis helps to explain the different regimes of flow at very high angles of attack, particularly on moderately twisted and tapered blades. A single blade was tested at two different flow velocities at a range of angles of attack with flow tuft visualisation and hotwire measurements of the wake. Hotwire wake measurements were able to show the gradual inception and ending of certain flow regimes. The power spectral densities of these measurements were normalized in terms of Strouhal number based on the projected chord to show that certain wake features have a relatively constant Strouhal number. The shedding frequency appears then to be relatively independent of chord taper and twist. Vortex generators were tested but were found to have little influence in this case. Gurney flaps were found to modify the wake geometry, stall onset angles and in some cases the shedding frequency.

Interest in vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) is experiencing a renaissance after most major research projects came to a standstill in the mid 90’s, in favour of conventional horizontal-axis turbines (HAWTs). Nowadays, the inherent advantages of the VAWT concept, especially in the Darrieus configuration, may outweigh their disadvantages in specific applications, like the urban context or floating platforms. To enable these concepts further, efficient, accurate, and robust aerodynamic prediction tools and design guidelines are needed for VAWTs, for which low-order simulation methods have not reached yet a maturity comparable to that of the Blade Element Momentum Theory for HAWTs’ applications. The two computationally efficient methods that are presently capable of capturing the unsteady aerodynamics of Darrieus turbines are the Double Multiple Streamtubes (DMS) Theory, based on momentum balances, and the Lifting Line Theory (LLT) coupled to a free vortex wake model. Both methods make use of tabulated lift and drag coefficients to compute the blade forces. Since the incidence angles range experienced by a VAWT blade is much wider than that of a HAWT blade, the accuracy of polars in describing the stall region and the transition towards the “thin plate like” behaviour has a large effect on simulation results. This paper will demonstrate the importance of stall and post-stall data handling in the performance estimation of Darrieus VAWTs. Using validated CFD simulations as a baseline, comparisons are provided for a blade in VAWT-like motion based on a DMS and a LLT code employing three sets of post-stall data obtained from a wind tunnel campaign, XFoil predictions extrapolated with the Viterna-Corrigan model and a combination of them. The polar extrapolation influence on quasi-steady operating conditions is shown and azimuthal variations of thrust and torque are compared for exemplary tip-speed ratios (TSRs). In addition, the major relevance of a proper dynamic stall model into both simulation methods is highlighted and discussed.

The present paper analyzes the effect of passive flow control (PFC) with respect to the retrofitting on small horizontal axis wind turbines (sHAWTs). We conducted extensive wind tunnel studies on a high performance low Reynolds airfoil using different PFC elements, i.e., vortex generators (VGs) and Gurney flaps (GF). qblade, an open source blade element momentum (BEM) code, is used to study the retrofitting potential of a simulated small wind turbine. The turbine design is presented and discussed. The simulations include the data and polars gained from the experiments and give further insight into the effects of PFC on sHAWTs. Therefore, several different blades were simulated using several variations of VG positions. This paper discusses their influence on the turbine performance. The authors especially focus on the startup performance as well as achieving increased power output at lower wind speeds. The vortex generators reduce the risk of laminar separation and enhance the lift in some configurations by more than 40% at low Reynolds numbers.

Small horizontal axis wind turbines (sHAWTs) are mostly designed by smaller companies with no or just small possibilities of aerodynamic testing and hence, airfoil selection is often based on published performance data and minimal or no experimental testing from the blade designer’s side. This paper focuses on the aerodynamic consequences resulting from an unqualified airfoil selection and accumulating surface soiling. The high performance low Reynolds profile FX 63-137 is compared to an Eppler-338 wing section as well as to a high performance utility scale wind turbine airfoil, AH 93-W-174 -1ex. We extensively investigated these three different airfoils within the low Reynolds regime between 50,000 and 200,000. This regime is especially important for the starting behavior of a wind turbine, i.e. a quick speed up, and is crucial for small wind turbines because they have more frequent start/stop events. A Reynolds number of 200 k is additionally the operational regime of some sHAWT under the 5–10 kW level. The present study discusses not only the low Reynolds performance of the smooth profiles but investigates the influence of surface soiling. This ranges from 2D disturbances, such as a 0.2mm thin tripwire or several zigzag tapes, up to the simulation of massive sand build up by covering the entire leading edge region with a 40 grit sand paper. The experiments reveal that even small surface soiling has an impact and massive roughness leads in some cases to the loss of 50% in lift coefficient. The experimental data is used to simulate a sHAWT in different stages of debris. While the peak power was reduced by two thirds compared to the clean configuration the annual energy production has halved under certain conditions.

Recently, a new interest in vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) technology is fueled by research on floating support structures for large-scale offshore wind energy application. For the application on floating structures at multimegawatt size, the VAWT concept may offer distinct advantages over the conventional horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) design. As an example, VAWT turbines are better suited for upscaling, and at multimegawatt size, the problem of periodic fatigue cycles reduces significantly due to a very low rotational speed. Additionally, the possibility to store the transmission and electricity generation system at the bottom, compared to the tower top as in a HAWT, can lead to a considerable reduction of material logistics costs. However, as most VAWT research stalled in the mid 1990s, no sophisticated and established tools to investigate this concept further exist today. Due to the complex interaction between unsteady aerodynamics and movement of the floating structure, fully coupled simulation tools modeling both aero and structural dynamics are needed. A nonlinear lifting line free vortex wake (LLFVW) code was recently integrated into the open source wind turbine simulation suite qblade. This paper describes some of the necessary adaptions of the algorithm, which differentiates it from the usual application in HAWT simulations. A focus is set on achieving a high robustness and computational efficiency. A short validation study compares LLFVW results with those of a two-dimensional (2D) unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) simulation.

The development of the next generation of large multimegawatt wind turbines presents exceptional challenges to the applied aerodynamic design tools. Because their operation is often outside the validated range of current state-of-the-art momentum balance models, there is a demand for more sophisticated, but still computationally efficient simulation methods. In contrast to the blade element momentum method (BEM), the lifting line theory (LLT) models the wake explicitly by a shedding of vortex rings. The wake model of freely convecting vortex rings induces a time-accurate velocity field, as opposed to the annular-averaged induction that is computed from the momentum balance, with computational costs being magnitudes smaller than those of a full computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. The open source code qblade, developed at the Berlin Institute of Technology, was recently extended with a lifting line-free vortex wake algorithm. The main motivation for the implementation of an LLT algorithm into qblade is to replace the unsteady BEM code aerodyn in the coupling to fast to achieve a more accurate representation of the unsteady aerodynamics and to gain more information on the evolving rotor wake and flow-field structure. Therefore, optimization for computational efficiency was a priority during the integration and the provisions that were taken will be presented in short. The implemented LLT algorithm is thoroughly validated against other benchmark BEM, LLT, and panel method codes and experimental data from the MEXICO and National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Phase VI tests campaigns. By integration of a validated LLT code within qblade and its database, the setup and simulation of LLT simulations are greatly facilitated. Simulations can be run from already existing rotor models without any additional input. Example use cases envisaged for the LLT code include: providing an estimate of the error margin of lower fidelity codes, i.e., unsteady BEM, or providing a baseline solution to check the soundness of higher fidelity CFD simulations or experimental results.

The results of stereo Particle-Image-Velocimetry measurements are presented in this paper to gain further insight into the wake of a finite width Gurney flap. It is attached to an FX 63-137 airfoil which is known for a very good performance at low Reynolds numbers and is therefore used for small wind turbines and is most appropriate for tests in the low speed wind tunnel presented in this study. The Gurney flaps are a promising concept for load control on wind turbines but can have adverse side effects, e.g. shedding of additional vortices. The investigation focuses on frequencies and velocity distributions in the wake as well as on the structure of the induced tip vortices. Phase averaged velocity fields are derived of a Proper-Orthogonal-Decomposition based on the stereo PIV measurements. Additional hot-wire measurements were conducted to analyze the fluctuations downstream of the finite width Gurney flaps. Experiments indicate a general tip vortex structure that is independent from flap length but altered by the periodic shedding downstream of the flap. The influence of Gurney flaps on a small wind turbine is investigated by simulating a small 40 kW turbine in Q-Blade. They can serve as power control without the need of an active pitch system and the starting performance is additionally improved. The application of Gurney flaps imply tonal frequencies in the wake of the blade. Simulation results are used to estimate the resulting frequencies. However, the solution of Gurney flaps is a good candidate for large scale wind turbine implementation as well. A FAST simulation of the NREL 5MW turbine is used to generate realistic time series of the lift. The estimations of control capabilities predict a reduction in the standard deviation of the lift of up to 65%. Therefore finite width Gurney flaps are promising to extend the lifetime of future wind turbines.

If the number of suitable sites for horizontal axis wind turbines is limited, increasing the rotor diameter is a viable means of increasing the power output of the wind turbine. For a given wind speed the power output theoretically increases with the radius squared. However, the material needed to upscale a classically designed rotor that withstands the also increasing fatigue loads, scales with the radius to the power of three, approximately. Rotor blades contribute to a significant part to the capital costs of a wind turbine. Because their cost scales with the amount of used material, reducing the fatigue loads on wind turbine blades is an efficient way to lower the cost of energy. To achieve the latter, a mechanism is presented that passively alleviates the unsteady aerodynamic loads that act on the rotor. The basic principle of this adaptive camber airfoil will be presented in the following. Subsequently, simulations with a nonlinear lifting line free vortex wake algorithm are performed that estimate the load reduction potential of this passive load control element on the NREL 5MW reference turbine.

To certify a Wind Turbine the standard processes set out by the GL guidelines and the IEC61400 demand a large number of simulations in order to justify the safe operation of the machine in all reasonably probable scenarios. The result of this rather demanding process is that the simulations rely on lower fidelity methods such as the Blade Element Momentum (BEM) method. The BEM method relies on a number of simplified inputs including the coefficient of lift and drag polar data (usually referred to as polars). These polars are usually either measured experimentally, generated using tools such as XFoil or, in some cases obtained using 2D CFD. It is typical to then modify these polars in order to make them suitable for aeroelastic simulations. Some of these modifications include 360° angle of attack extrapolation methods and polar modifications to account for 3D effects. Many of these modifications can be perceived to be a black art due to the manual selection of coefficients. The polars can misrepresent reality for many reasons, for example, inflow turbulence can affect measurements obtained in wind tunnels. Furthermore, on real wind turbine blades leading edge erosion can reduce performance. Simulated polars can even vary significantly due to the choice of turbulence models. Stack these effects on top of the uncertainties caused by yaw error, pitch error and dynamic stall and one can clearly see an operating environment hostile to accurate simulations. Colloquial evidence suggests that experienced designers would account for all of these sources of errors methodically, however, this is not reflected by the certification process. A review of experimental data and literature was performed to identify some of the inaccuracies in wind turbine polars. Significant variations were found between a range of 2D polar techniques and wind tunnel measurements. A sensitivity study was conducted using the aeroelastic simulation code FAST (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) with lift and drag polars sourced using different methods. The results were post-processed to give comparisons the rotor blade fatigue damage; variations in accumulated damages reached levels of 164%. This variation is not disastrous but is certainly enough to motivate a new approach for certifying the aerodynamic performance of wind turbines. Such an approach would simply see the source of polar data and all post-processing steps documented and included in the checks performed by certification bodies.Copyright © 2015 by ASME

The passive Gurney flap has proven being a good mean to alter the static aerodynamic lift on an airfoil. The Gurney flap can be applied to either the suction side for lift reduction or to the pressure side for lift enhancement. Measurements on a FX 63 -137 airfoil with an active Gurney flap were conducted in a wind tunnel to investigated the time dependent behavior of two-dimensional as well as finite flaps. The time-dependent pressure response of the deploying flaps were evaluated locally over the airfoils surface and the spanwise time-dependent lift was evaluated. Results have shown, that the lift response behaves differently for a flap deployment than for a flap retraction, where the convergence generally takes longer. Furthermore, the adjacent flap sections of the finite flap have shown to also experience a dynamic lift change. This response is different than the response in front of the flap, which is due to the influence of to the surface pressure expansion around the finite flap as well as the flap tip vortices. The measurements have shown, that the timedependent lift in the adjacent sections do play a relevant part in the overall lift response of the wing.

The aerodynamic loads on a two-dimensional airfoil can be altered with an active Gurney flap placed at the trailing edge. The flap can be moved either to the suction side for lift reduction or to the pressure side for lift enhancement. Measurements on a FX 63 -137 airfoil with a finite as well as a full span active Gurney flap were conducted in the wind tunnel. The dynamic wake during the flaps movement was measured with a High Speed Mono PIV system at center-span location. Furthermore, the time-dependent stream-wise pressure distribution was measured with a wake rake at various spanwise positions. The time-dependent pressure measurements as well as the PIV snapshots were further analyzed with Fast Fourier Transformations as well as the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition technique. Results for the static non-moving Gurney flap have shown, that the position of the vortex street is altered depending on the position of the Gurney flap. The average flow-field showed the decamber mechanism which is responsible for altering the static loads. The frequency of the vortex street was found higher for the flap deflected to the suction side than to the pressure side. The wake development during the active flap deployment and retraction process was observed. Lift and drag development could be associated with a trigger to the wake development. It was found, that the change of lift was accompanied by a change of the vortex street in frequency as well as in vortex strength over the flap movement.

QBlade is an open source wind turbine design and simula-tion tool developed at the Berlin Institute of Technology. To en-able a coupling with the aeroelastic simulation tool FAST fromNREL an aditional module, called QFEM, was created and in-tegrated with QBlade. This module performs a modal analysison rotor blades designed in QBlade using isotropic tapered Eu-ler Beam elements. The newly developed module now providesstructural properties to the National Renewable Energy Labo-ratorys aeroelasticity simulation tool FAST. The 2D structuralproperties of the beam elements are created using integrationmethods. A number of test cases show that the 2D integrationmethods and beam element code work with adaquete accuracy.The integration of the modal analysis code greatly facilitates thestructural design and analysis of rotor blades and will be madeavailable to the public under an open source license. This paper presents an evaluation of XFOIL and a commercially available CFD solver to predict the two-dimensional lift and drag coefficients of wind turbine airfoil sections for attached and separated flows. The computational solutions are correlated with the experimental data for the DU 96-W-180 airfoil that has been generated from wind tunnel testing performed at TU Delft and TU Berlin. CFD solutions are presented for turbulent calculations using the Shear-Stress Transport (SST) [1] and Spalart-Allmaras [2] turbulence models and transition calculations using the SST γ-θ model. Transition points from the CFD simulations are compared to the results obtained using XFOIL [3]. The paper culminates in a quantitative analysis identifying the deviations of the XFOIL and CFD solutions from the experimental data. This analysis uses the experimental polars generated by TU Delft and TU Berlin as a baseline for the comparison with the end goal of determining the best computational source of design polars for use in industry.

Wind turbines are exposed to unsteady incident flow conditions such as gusts or tower interference. These cause a change in the blades' local angle of attack, which often leads to flow separation at the inner rotor sections. Recirculation areas and dynamic stall may occur, which lead to an uneven load distribution along the blade. In this work, a fluidic actuator is developed that reduces flow separation. The functional principle is adapted from a fluidic amplifier. High pressure air fed by an external supply flows into the interaction region of the actuator. Two control ports, oriented perpendicular to the inlet, allow for a steering of the actuation flow. One of the control ports is connected to the suction side, the other to the pressure side of the airfoil. Depending on the pressure difference that varies with the angle of attack, the actuation air is directed into one of four outlet channels. These guide the air to different chordwise exit locations on the airfoil's suction side. The appropriate actuation location adjusts automatically according to the pressure difference between the control ports and therefore incidence. Suction side flow separation is delayed as the boundary layer is enriched with kinetic energy. Experiments were conducted on a DU97-W-300 airfoil at Re = 2.2 × 105. Compared to the baseline, lift variations due to varying angles of attack were reduced by an order of magnitude. A Fast/Aerodyn simulation of a full wind turbine rotor was performed to show the real world load reduction potential. Additionally, system integration is discussed, which includes suggestions on producibility and operational details.

Lately the need for modern medium capacity wind turbines for self-consumption within urban and rural areas has risen again. The great majority however of the large wind turbine manufacturers are not interested in this small profit market. SMART BLADE GmbH in cooperation with the CORE Team of the University of Patras have decided to develop modern, sophisticated rotor blades with state of the art tools from the multi-MW wind turbine industry in order to boost the development of the upcoming modern small capacity wind turbines. The focus of the present investigation is to evaluate the capability of modern state of the art codes to simulate the aerodynamic behavior of typical wind turbine airfoils. Two airfoils were selected. The AH 93-W-174 [2] with a thickness of 17.4% as a representative for relatively thin airfoils in the outer region and the relatively thick DU 97-W-300 [9] with a thickness of 30% as a representative for rather thick airfoils in the inner region of wind turbine blades. The third testcase was a multi-element configuration composed of the DU-97-W-300 as the main airfoil and a slat based on the NACA 22 airfoil. For all configurations aerodynamic simulations with different levels of complexity were accomplished. First simulations were carried out with the panel code XFOIL [3] and the Euler code MSES [4]. Furthermore steady state RANS computations were conducted by the use of the open source code OpenFOAM® [6]. There the Spalart Allmaras [8], the two-equation k − ω shear stress transport (SST) model by Menter [5] , and the recently implemented three-equation k − k l − ω turbulence models by Walter and Cokljat [10] were applied. All simulation results are compared with wind tunnel data, measured at the large wind tunnel facilities of HFI/ISTA TU-Berlin.

A double-multiple-streamtube vertical axis wind turbine simulation and design module has been integrated within the open-source wind turbine simulator QBlade. QBlade also contains the XFOIL airfoil analysis functionalities, which makes the software a single tool that comprises all functionality needed for the design and simulation of vertical or horizontal axis wind turbines. The functionality includes two dimensional airfoil design and analysis, lift and drag polar extrapolation, rotor blade design and wind turbine performance simulation. The QBlade software also inherits a generator module, pitch and rotational speed controllers, geometry export functionality and the simulation of rotor characteristics maps. Besides that, QBlade serves as a tool to compare different blade designs and their performance and to thoroughly investigate the distribution of all relevant variables along the rotor in an included post processor. The benefits of this code will be illustrated with two different case studies. The first case deals with the effect of stall delaying vortex generators on a vertical axis wind turbine rotor. The second case outlines the impact of helical blades and blade number on the time varying loads of a vertical axis wind turbine.Copyright © 2013 by ASME

Wind turbine blade design is currently based on the combination of a plurality of airfoil sections along the rotorblade span. The two-dimensional airfoil characteristics are usually measured with wind tunnel experiments or computed by means of numerical simulation codes. The general airfoil input for the calculation of the rotorblade power characteristics as well as the subsequent aerodynamic and aeroelastic loads are based on these two-dimensional airfoil characteristics. In this paper, the effects of inflow turbulence and wind tunnel test measurement deviations are investigated and discussed, to allow considerations of such effects in the rotorblade design process. The results of CFD simulations with various turbulence models are utilized in combination with wind tunnel measurements in order to assess the impact of such discrepancies. It seems that turbulence, airfoil surface roughness and early transition effects are able to contribute significantly to the uncertainty and scattering of measurements. Various wind tunnel facilities generate different performance characteristic curves, while grid-generated turbulence is generally not included in the wind tunnel measurements during airfoil characterization. Furthermore the correlation of grid-generated wind tunnel turbulence with the atmospheric turbulence time and length scales is not easily achieved. All the aforementioned uncertainties can increase the performance scattering of current wind turbine blade designs as well as the generated aeroelastic loads. A brief assessment of the effect of such uncertainties on wind turbine performance is given at the last part of this work by means of BEM simulations on a wind turbine blade.Copyright © 2013 by ASME

Vortex generators (VGs) are passive flow control devices commonly employed to prevent flow separation on wind turbine blades. They mitigate the damaging fatigue loads resulting from stall while increasing lift and consequently lead to rotor torque increase. This work summarizes a research project aimed at optimizing the sectional as well as the full rotor-blade aerodynamics using VGs. The effects of chordwise position, spanwise spacing and VG size were studied with force balance measurements of a 2D wing section. Reducing the distance between adjacent VGs produced large increases in the static stall angle and maximum lift, but also resulted in a significant increase in drag as well as sharp lift excursions at angles exceeding the static stall angle. The optimal chordwise position of the vortex generators was found to be in the range of x/c = 15%–20%, where a comparatively low parasitic drag and a smooth post-stall lift curve were achieved. Particle Image Velocimetry measurements were conducted at various chordwise positions to provide insight into the interaction between adjacent streamwise vortices. The experimental aerodynamic performance curves of the optimal VG configuration were used to project their effect on wind turbine blade aerodynamics. Three different rotorblades were designed and several stall and pitch regulated wind turbine models were simulated by means of a Blade Element Momentum (BEM) code (QBlade) developed by Smart Blade GmbH. The performance of the rotorblades with and without VGs was simulated in order to assess their effect on the aerodynamic performance and loads. Finally, previously measured steady state performance curves under high-roughness conditions were used to simulate the detrimental effect of surface roughness on the performance of the aforementioned rotorblades. This allows for an estimate of the potential of the VGs to be employed as retrofit elements for performance recovery of blades with a contaminated surface.

This paper presents the continuation of the research efforts of the authors in the direction of the development of “smart blades” for the wind turbines of the future. Results from previous research work is further in combination with a newly developed simulation code in order to assess the performance of Active Flow Control (AFC) elements implemented on modern wind turbine blade structures. Parametric investigations have been conducted in order to identify the optimal configuration of various AFC elements. These are tested under identical boundary conditions to define an overall optimal solution. The results of the research project show that the Active Gurney Flap is the element with a highest probability for the fastest implementation on wind turbine blades for load alleviation purposes. The most promising however overall solution is the Flexible Trailing Edge Flap. With its high control authority and relatively high regulation speed is able to significantly vary the aerodynamic performance of wind turbines.Copyright © 2012 by ASME

This paper presents a series of investigations performed at the Hermann Fottinger Institute of TU Berlin. The initial scope of the investigations was the identification of Active Flow Control (AFC) solutions with significant implementation potential on wind turbine rotors. Several Active Flow Control solutions were thoroughly investigated based on extensive literature research. The performance of all the investigated solutions was ranked according to objective performance criteria and then the best performing solutions were selected for further numerical and experimental investigation. The selected Active Flow Control solutions were experimentally investigated with steady state wind tunnel measurements as well as steady state CFD simulations. The results of these investigations and the potential of each AFC solution are presented and discussed. The steady state tests were followed by a dynamic wind tunnel test campaign where the performance of one AFC solution (active Gurney flap) on a pitching test wing was investigated. The results of the static and dynamic investigations were very positive and proved the large load reduction potential of AFC on wind turbines.Copyright © 2011 by ASME

The effects of distributed roughness on wind turbines are extensively investigated in this paper. The sources of roughness are identified and analyzed and their effects on airfoil are estimated from simulations and measured with wind tunnel measurements. In addition to the environmental and manufacturing induced roughness, several forms of roughness-related shape deviations are investigated and their effects on the aerodynamic performance of airfoils is qualitatively predicted through numerical simulations. The actual effects of roughness on wind turbine performance are also presented through power production measurements of wind turbines installed in sandy environments. These measurements are correlated with simulated power predictions, utilizing a steady state BEM code.Copyright © 2010 by ASME

First results of a novel measurement technique that allows to extract quantitative data from tuft flow visualizations on real-world wind turbine blades are presented. The instantaneous flow structure is analyzed by tracking individual flow indicators in each of the snapshot images. The obtained per-tuft statistics are correlated with logged turbine data to provide an insight into the surface flow structure under the influence of wind speed. A histogram filter is used to identify two flow states: a separated flow state that occurs at higher wind speeds and a maximal attached flow state that mainly occurs in the lower wind speed range.

Finite micro-tabs have been investigated experimentally to evaluate the potential for load control on wind turbines. Two dimensional full span, as well as multiple finite tabs of various aspect ratios have been studied on an AH93W174 airfoil at different chord wise positions. A force balance was used to measure the aerodynamic loads. Furthermore, the wake vortex system consisting of the Karman vortex street as well as the tab tip vortices was analyzed with a 12-hole probe and hot wire anemometry. Finally, conventional oil paint as well as a quantitative digital flow analysis technique called SMARTviz were used to visualize the flow around the finite tab configurations. Results have shown that the devices are an effective solution to alleviate the airfoils overall load. The influence of the tab height, tab position as well as the finite tab aspect ratio on the lift and lift to drag ratio have been evaluated. It could be shown, that the lift difference can either be varied by changing the tab height as well as by altering the aspect ratio of the finite tabs. The drag of a two-dimensional flap is directly associated with the vortex street, while in the case of the finite tab, the solidity ratio of the tabs has the strongest effect on the drag. Therefore, the application of a finite tab system showed to improve the lift to drag ratio.

This article discusses the performance optimization of wind turbine rotors with active flow control. An extensive multi-parameter investigation with a thorough matrix-grading system was performed to identify the most suitable solution for industrial quality, short/mid-term implementation on actual utility scale wind turbines. A very wide selection of aerodynamic flow control solutions was analyzed based on extensive multi-disciplinary literature review and through aerodynamic and aeroelastic simulations. It is suggested that the trailing edge devices have the most favorable performance in the field of system integration and mechanical design performance. Compliant structures like the flexible flap keep the number of moving parts to a minimum while maintaining high performance and manufacturing simplicity. The use of flexible and elastic materials based on polymers or rubber material improves the lightning strike resistance of these solutions and allows for low-cost large-scale production. The actuator principle, sensitivity, and reliability are decisive parameters, and pneumatic actuators seem to strike a good balance between performance, cost, and reliability.

This article describes the performance optimization of wind turbine rotors with active flow control. The active Gurney flap concept was tested in the wind tunnel under dynamic AoA variations to simulate unsteady inflow conditions. A high-deflection micro flap was actuated by four digital electric servos with a maximum deflection rate of 360°/sec. A custom code was created to allow dynamic AoA variations of the test wing with simultaneous dynamic force measurements. During the dynamic investigations, various control strategies were tested, starting from standard PID controllers with semi-empirical parameter tuning models to Direct Inverse Controllers with neural network tuning strategies and pure self-learning neural network controllers. The results of the closed-loop measurements using the manually tuned PID controller showed a reduction potential for the dynamic lift loads in the range of 70% as well as a stable controller behavior. The Direct Inverse Controller not only showed a load reduction of 36.8%, but also significant improvement potential with respect to its fine-tuning.

The implementation of an innovative aerodynamic control technique in wind turbines is a point under extensive investigation since the conventional wind turbine blade technology is reaching its limits. Almost all the eort of the wind turbine industry in the eld of aerodynamics is related to the development of blades which oer better performance, increased reliability and faster control of larger wind turbines. Currently, however, most of the research eort is focusing on the implementation of aerodynamic elements for dynamic load alleviation during wind turbine operation rather than rotor stall control or even more the complete wind turbine power regulation which is the ultimate target of the current project. The current document presents the test process, methodology and results of wind tunnel test campaigns on the investigation of the exible ap conguration as a possible means of aerodynamic control of wind turbines. The test campaign took place at the HFI/TU Berlin wind tunnel. Measurements were performed with a model of the DU96W180 airfoil as well as with the modied-DU96W180 test airfoil section equipped with the exible ap assembly in ow with Reynolds number Re equal to 1,300,000. The The exible ap was tested in various positive and negative deections in order to extract its complete operational curve. The results showed signicant inuence on both lift and drag as well as strong variations on the pitch behavior of the wing. The paper also discusses the possible benets of the integration of exible ap systems in wind turbine blade structures.
