The current pandemic caused by COVID-19 has underlined the importance of a joint effort and approach to ensure patient and health care worker safety in medical care throughout Europe. In addition, the recent flood disasters in Germany and other countries called for immediate joint action, in this case with regard to the prevention of water-borne infections. Environmental disasters will increase with consequences for hospitals and nursing homes. Cooperative efforts are needed for preventing and controlling associated infection outbreaks, new pathogens will appear and a geographic shift of infectious diseases previously not detected in certain areas has already been observed.This approach to infection prevention and control must entail structural as well as regulatory aspects. The principle of equal protection against infections in all European countries must be implemented. Prevention and control of infections, including nosocomial infections, infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria as well as pandemics, need to be based on equal standards in all of Europe.Protection against infections and other public health risks in all European countries is the best guarantor for building trust and identification of citizens in our common Europe. Experts in the fields of hygiene, microbiology, infectiology and epidemiology have to pool the expertise on the prevention and control of infections from different European countries and define key targets for achieving a high standard of hygiene measures throughout Europe. The participants of the Rudolf Schülke Foundation International Symposium call for immediate action and priority to be given to the realization of the proposed 16-point plan. Auch die jüngsten Hochwasserkatastrophen in Deutschland und anderen Ländern haben gezeigt, dass sofortige überregionale Maßnahmen, in diesem Fall zur Prävention von durch Wasser übertragenen Infektionen, dringend erforderlich sind. Umweltkatastrophen werden zunehmen, und sie haben auch für Krankenhäuser und Pflegeheime Folgen.Ausbrüche müssen verhindert und unter Kontrolle gebracht werden. Zugleich ist mit dem Auftreten neuer Krankheitserreger sowie mit einer bereits jetzt zu beobachtenden geographischen Verschiebung von Infektionskrankheiten zu rechnen.Der Ansatz zur Prävention und Bekämpfung von Infektionskrankheiten muss sowohl strukturelle als auch politische Aspekte beinhalten. Es gilt, den Grundsatz des gleichen Schutzes vor Infektionen in allen europäischen Ländern umzusetzen. Prävention und Bekämpfung von Infektionen, einschließlich nosokomialer Infektionen, Infektionen durch antibiotikaresistente Bakterien sowie Pandemien, müssen in ganz Europa auf den gleichen Standards beruhen.Der Schutz vor Infektionen und anderen Risiken für die öffentliche Gesundheit in allen Ländern Europas ist der beste Garant für die Schaffung von Vertrauen und Identifikation der Bürger in unserem gemeinsamen Europa. The Patagonian Andes have been used to illustrate the dependency of major topographic changes in response to glacial erosion processes dominating over tectonic deformation and uplift. Here, we investigate tectonic and glacial contributors to the erosion history and evolution of topography in the Patagonian Andes at 46.5��S. We present 33 new apatite and zircon (U���Th)/He (AHe and ZHe, respectively) and fission track (AFT and ZFT, respectively) ages integrated with 46 previously published bedrock thermochronometric ages in a 3D thermo���kinematic model. Observed thermochronometer ages increase from the eastern flank of the topographic crest of the orogen toward the eastern retro���foreland basin (from AFT 4���10 Ma, ZHe 4���12 Ma, ZFT 6���14 Ma to AFT 28���32 Ma, ZHe 68���117 Ma). Thermo���kinematic modeling indicates that spatial gradients in thermochronometric ages can be explained by an up to 100���km���wide, parabolic���shaped pattern in exhumation rates with a maximum rate of 0.5 mm/yr from 15 Ma until the onset of glaciation at ���7 Ma. Furthermore, model results suggest that the youngest AHe ages require a localized acceleration in erosion from ���0.5 mm/yr to ���2.2 mm/yr starting between ���5 and ���3 Ma, coeval with intensified glaciation and subduction of the Chile Rise. Our results suggest that the long���wavelength (���100 km) topography and erosion patterns are likely controlled by rock uplift above mid���crustal ramp(s) and subsequent transpression along the Liqui��e���Ofqui Fault. An Ar plasma sustained by a surfaguide wave launcher is investigated at intermediate pressure (2002667 Pa). Two 2D self-consistent models (quasi-neutral and plasma bulk-sheath) are developed and benchmarked. The complete set of electromagnetic and fluid equations and the boundary conditions are presented. The transformation of fluid equations from a local reference frame, that is, moving with plasma or when the gas flow is zero, to a laboratory reference frame, that is, accounting for the gas flow, is discussed. The pressure range is extended down to 80 Pa by experimental measurements. The electron temperature decreases with pressure. The electron density depends linearly on power, and changes its behavior with pressure depending on the product of pressure and radial plasma size.

International audience; The subduction of bathymetric anomalies at convergent margins can profoundly affect subduction dynamics, magmatism, and the structural and geomorphic evolution of the overriding plate. The Northern Patagonian Icefield (NPI) is located east of the Chile Triple Junction at ~47°S, where the Chile Rise spreading center collides with South America. This region is characterized by an abrupt increase in summit elevations and relief that has been controversially debated in the context of geodynamic versus glacial erosion effects on topography. Here we present geomorphic, thermochronological, and structural data that document neotectonic activity along hitherto unrecognized faults along the flanks of the NPI. New apatite (U-Th)/He bedrock cooling ages suggest faulting since 2–3 Ma. We infer the northward translation of an ~140 km long fore-arc sliver—the NPI block—results from enhanced partitioning of oblique plate convergence due to the closely spaced collision of three successive segments of the Chile Rise. In this model, greater uplift occurs in the hanging wall of the Exploradores thrust at the northern leading edge of the NPI block, whereas the Cachet and Liquiñe-Ofqui dextral faults decouple the NPI block along its eastern and western flanks, respectively. Localized extension possibly occurs at its southern trailing edge along normal faults associated with margin-parallel extension, tectonic subsidence, and lower elevations along the Andean crest line. Our neotectonic model provides a novel explanation for the abrupt topographic variations inland of the Chile Triple Junction and emphasizes the fundamental effects of local tectonics on exhumation and topographic patterns in this glaciated landscape.

Endovascular [coil] treatment is being used as an alternative to surgical treatment [clipping] for intracranial aneurysms. The purpose of this study was to compare the endovascular treatment and surgical clipping by cost-effectiveness and cost-utility analyses and applying analytical "decision tree" model. The study included 124 patients with intracranial aneurysms from November 2010 to November 2011 (90 underwent surgical clipping, whereas 34 were treated via coiling). Clinical outcome at the 6th month, using the Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS), and cost of treatment, as well as the quality-adjusted life year (QALY) were evaluated in both groups. In GOS 4 and 5 they were 91.2% of the group treated via coiling and 81.1% of surgically treated patients. Health conditioned quality of life for the first year in 106 patients was: 0,844 QALY for endovascular treatment (27 patients) and 0,737 QALY (79 patients) for surgical treatment. The average cost for patients undergoing endovascular treatment of aneurysms in BGN is estimated at 19,856 while the average price of surgery in BGN is 11,480. There is no statistically significant difference in clinical outcome at the sixth month and in the health conditioned quality of life for the first year after the treatment in both groups. Дослідження, проведене в період листопад 2010 року – листопад 2011 року проводилося за участю 124 пацієнтів з інтракраніальними аневризмами (90 прооперованих та 34 емболізованих). Клінічний результат (GOS) у шостому місяці, витрати на лікування, а також обумовлена здоров'ям якість життя (QALY) розподілені на дві групи. В GOS 4 та 5 увійшли 91,2% емболізованих пацієнтів та 81,1% пацієнтів, лікування яких проводилося хірургічним методом. Обумовлена здоров'ям якість життя на першому році у 106 пацієнтів складала 0,844 QALY при ендоваскулярному лікуванні (27 пацієнтів) та 0,737 QALY (79 пацієнтів) при хірургічному лікуванні.
