Gravitationally lensed systems allow a detailed view of galaxies at high redshift. High spatial- and spectral-resolution measurements of arc-like structures can offer unique constraints on the physical and dynamical properties of high-z systems. We present near-infrared spectra centred on the gravitational arcs of six known z ~ 2 lensed star-forming galaxies of stellar masses of 10^9-10^11 Msun and star formation rate (SFR) in the range between 10 and 400 Msun/yr. Ground layer adaptive optics (AO)-assisted observations are obtained at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) with the LUCI spectrographs during the commissioning of the ARGOS facility. We used MOS masks with curved slits to follow the extended arched structures and study the diagnostic emission lines. Combining spatially resolved kinematic properties across the arc-like morphologies, emission line diagnostics and archival information, we distinguish between merging and rotationally supported systems, and reveal the possible presence of ejected gas. For galaxies that have evidence for outflows, we derive outflow energetics and mass-loading factors compatible with those observed for stellar winds in local and high-z galaxies. We also use flux ratio diagnostics to derive gas-phase metallicities. The low signal-to-noise ratio in the faint H$\beta$ and nitrogen lines allows us to derive an upper limit of ~ 0.15 dex for the spatial variations in metallicity along the slit for the lensed galaxy J1038. Analysed near-infrared spectra presented here represent the first scientific demonstration of performing AO-assisted multi-object spectroscopy with narrow curved-shape slits. The increased angular and spectral resolution, combined with the binocular operation mode with the 8.4-m-wide eyes of LBT, will allow the characterisation of kinematic and chemical properties of a large sample of galaxies at high-z in the near future., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Having completed its commissioning phase, the Advanced Rayleigh guided Ground-layer adaptive Optics System (ARGOS) facility is coming online for scientific observations at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). With six Rayleigh laser guide stars in two constellations and the corresponding wavefront sensing, ARGOS corrects the ground-layer distortions for both LBT 8.4m eyes with their adaptive secondary mirrors. Under regular observing conditions, this set-up delivers a point spread function (PSF) size reduction by a factor of ~2--3 compared to a seeing-limited operation. With the two LUCI infrared imaging and multi-object spectroscopy instruments receiving the corrected images, observations in the near-infrared can be performed at high spatial and spectral resolution. We discuss the final ARGOS technical set-up and the adaptive optics performance. We show that imaging cases with ground-layer adaptive optics (GLAO) are enhancing several scientific programmes, from cluster colour magnitude diagrams and Milky Way embedded star formation, to nuclei of nearby galaxies or extragalactic lensing fields. In the unique combination of ARGOS with the multi-object near-infrared spectroscopy available in LUCI over a 4x4 arcmin field of view, the first scientific observations have been performed on local and high-z objects. We present the results of a spectroscopic study of the intermediate age (approximately 6.5 Gyr) massive cluster Kron 3 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. We measure CN and CH band strengths (at 3839 and 4300 Angstroms respectively) using VLT FORS2 spectra of 16 cluster members and find a sub-population of 5 stars enriched in nitrogen. We conclude that this is evidence for multiple populations in Kron 3, the fourth intermediate age cluster, after Lindsay 1, NGC 416 and NGC 339 (ages 6-8 Gyr), to display this phenomenon originally thought to be a unique characteristic of old globular clusters. At 6.5 Gyr this is one of the youngest clusters with multiple populations, indicating that the mechanism responsible for their onset must operate until a redshift of at least 0.75, much later than the peak of globular cluster formation at redshift ~3., Comment: 9 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We imaged with ALMA and ARGOS/LUCI the molecular gas and the dust and stellar continuum in XID2028, an obscured QSO at z=1.593, where the presence of a massive outflow in the ionized gas component traced by the [O III]5007 emission has been resolved up to 10 kpc. This target represents a unique test case to study QSO 'feedback in action' at the peak epoch of AGN-galaxy coevolution. The QSO has been detected in the CO(5-4) transition and in the 1.3mm continuum, at ~30 and ~20 {\sigma} significance respectively, with both emissions confined in the central (<4 kpc) radius area. Our analysis suggests the presence of a fast rotating molecular disc (v~400 km/s) on very compact scales, and well inside the galaxy extent seen in the rest-frame optical light (~10 kpc, as inferred from the LUCI data). Adding available measurements in additional two CO transitions, CO(2-1) and CO(3-2), we could derive a total gas mass of ~10$^{10}$ M$_\odot$, thanks to a critical assessment of CO excitation and the comparison with Rayleigh-Jeans continuum estimate. This translates into a very low gas fraction (<5%) and depletion time scales of 40-75 Myr, reinforcing the result of atypical gas consumption conditions in XID2028, possibly due to feedback effects on the host galaxy. Finally, we also detect at ~5{\sigma} the presence of high velocity CO gas, which we interpret as a signature of galaxy-scale molecular outflow, spatially coincident with the ionised gas outflow. XID2028 represents therefore a unique case where the measurement of total outflowing mass (~500-800 M$_\odot$/yr) including the molecular and atomic components, in both the ionised and neutral phases, has been attempted for a high-z QSO., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures (including Appendix). When a massive star in a binary system explodes as a supernova its companion star may be polluted with heavy elements from the supernova ejecta. Such a pollution had been detected in a handful of post-supernova binaries (Gonzalez Hernandez et al. 2011), but none of them is associated with a supernova remnant. We report the discovery of a solar-type star in a close, eccentric binary system with a neutron star within the young Galactic supernova remnant RCW 86. Our discovery implies that the supernova progenitor was a moving star, which exploded near the edge of its wind bubble and lost most of its initial mass due to common-envelope evolution shortly before core collapse. We find that the solar-type star is strongly polluted with calcium and other elements, which places the explosion within the class of calcium-rich supernovae -- faint and fast transients (Filippenko et al. 2003; Kasliwal et al. 2012}, whose origin is strongly debated (Kawabata et al. 2010; Waldman et al. 2011), and provides the first observational evidence that supernovae of this type can arise from core-collapse explosions (Kawabata et al. 2010; Moriya et al. 2010)., Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures, original version of the manuscript submitted to Nature Astronomy (the accepted version differs from the original one; it will appear in arXiv only in October 2017 because of the journal publication policy)

Lindsay 1 is an intermediate age (approx 8 Gyr) massive cluster in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Using VLT FORS2 spectra of 16 probable cluster members on the lower RGB of the cluster, we measure CN and CH band strengths (at 3883 and 4300 Angstroms respectively), along with carbon and nitrogen abundances and find that a sub-population of stars has significant nitrogen enrichment. A lack of spread in carbon abundances excludes evolutionary mixing as the source of this enrichment, so we conclude that this is evidence of multiple populations. Therefore, L1 is the youngest cluster to show such variations, implying that the process triggering the onset of multiple populations must operate until at least redshift ~1., Comment: 5 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

Age, metallicity and spatial distribution of globular clusters (GCs) provide a powerful tool to reconstruct major star-formation episodes in galaxies. IKN is a faint dwarf spheroidal (dSph) in the M81 group of galaxies. It contains five old GCs, which makes it the galaxy with the highest known specific frequency (SN=126). We estimate the photometric age, metallicity and spatial distribution of the poorly studied IKN GCs. We search SDSS for GC candidates beyond the HST field of view, which covers half of IKN. To break the age-metallicity degeneracy in the V-I colour we use WHT/LIRIS Ks-band photometry and derive photometric ages and metallicities by comparison with SSP models in the V,I,Ks colour space. IKN GCs' VIKs colours are consistent with old ages ($\geq\!8$ Gyr) and a metallicity distribution with a higher mean than typical for such a dSph ([Fe/H$]\!\simeq\!-1.4_{-0.2}^{+0.6}$ dex). Their photometric masses range ($0.5 <{\cal M_{\rm GC}}<4\times10^5M_\odot$) implies a high mass ratio between GCs and field stars, of $10.6\%$. Mixture model analysis of the RGB field stars' metallicity suggests that 72\% of the stars may have formed together with the GCs. Using the most massive GC-SFR relation we calculate a SFR of $\sim\!10M_\odot/$yr during its formation epoch. We note that the more massive GCs are closer to the galaxy photometric centre. IKN GCs also appear spatially aligned along a line close to the IKN major-axis and nearly orthogonal to the plane of spatial distribution of galaxies in the M81 group. We identify one new IKN GC candidate based on colour and PSF analysis of the SDSS data. The evidence towards i) broad and high metallicity distribution of the field IKN RGB stars and its GCs, ii) high fraction and iii), spatial alignment of IKN GCs, supports a scenario for tidally triggered complex IKN's SFH in the context of interactions with galaxies in the M81 group., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted to A&A

In a virialized stellar system, the mean-square velocity is a direct tracer of the energy per unit mass of the system. Here, we exploit this to estimate and compare root-mean-square velocities for a large sample of nuclear star clusters and their host (late- or early-type) galaxies. Traditional observables, such as the radial surface brightness and second-order velocity moment profiles, are subject to short-term variations due to individual episodes of matter infall and/or star formation. The total mass, energy and angular momentum, on the other hand, are approximately conserved. Thus, the total energy and angular momentum more directly probe the formation of galaxies and their nuclear star clusters, by offering access to more fundamental properties of the nuclear cluster-galaxy system than traditional observables. We find that there is a strong correlation, in fact a near equality, between the root-mean-square velocity of a nuclear star cluster and that of its host. Thus, the energy per unit mass of a nuclear star cluster is always comparable to that of its host galaxy. We interpret this as evidence that nuclear star clusters do not form independently of their host galaxies, but rather that their formation and subsequent evolution are coupled. We performed a large spectroscopic survey of compact, unresolved objects in the core of the Hydra I galaxy cluster (Abell 1060), with the aim of identifying ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs), and investigating the properties of the globular cluster (GC) system around the central cD galaxy NGC 3311. We obtained VIMOS medium resolution spectra of about 1200 candidate objects with apparent magnitudes 18.5 < V < 24.0 mag, covering both the bright end of the GC luminosity function and the luminosity range of all known UCDs. By means of spectroscopic redshift measurements, we identified 118 cluster members, from which 52 are brighter than M_V = -11.0 mag, and can therefore be termed UCDs. The brightest UCD in our sample has an absolute magnitude of M_V = -13.4 mag (corresponding to a mass of > 5 x 10^7 M_sun) and a half-light radius of 25 pc. This places it among the brightest and most massive UCDs ever discovered. Most of the GCs/UCDs are both spatially and dynamically associated to the central cD galaxy. The overall velocity dispersion of the GCs/UCDs is comparable to what is found for the cluster galaxies. However, when splitting the sample into a bright and a faint part, we observe a lower velocity dispersion for the bright UCDs/GCs than for the fainter objects. At a dividing magnitude of M_V = -10.75 mag, the dispersions differ by more than 200 km/s, and up to 300 km/s for objects within 5 arcmin around NGC 3311. We interpret these results in the context of different UCD formation channels, and conclude that interaction driven formation seems to play an important role in the centre of Hydra I., Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

For the full galaxy mass range, we find that previously observed trends of globular cluster (GC) system scaling parameters (number, luminosity or mass of all GCs in a galaxy normalized to the host galaxy luminosity or mass, e.g. S_L) as a function of galaxy mass, holds irrespective of galaxy type or environment. The S_L-value of early-type galaxies is, on average, twice that of late-types. We derive theoretical predictions which describe remarkably well the observed GC system scaling parameter distributions given an assumed GC formation efficiency ({\eta}), i.e. the ratio of total mass in GCs to galaxy halo mass. It has a mean value of {\eta}=5.5e-5 , and an increasing scatter toward low galaxy mass. The excess {\eta}-values of some massive galaxies compared to expectations from the mean model prediction, may be attributed to an efficient GC formation, inefficient production of field stars, accretion of low-mass high-{\eta} galaxies or likely a mixture of all these effects., Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure, Conference Proceedings: "A Universe of Dwarf Galaxies", 14-18 June 2010, Lyon, France

The formation of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) is believed to be interaction driven, and UCDs are abundant in the cores of galaxy clusters, environments that mark the end-point of galaxy evolution. Nothing is known about the properties of UCDs in compact groups of galaxies, environments where most of galaxy evolution and interaction is believed to occur and where UCDs in intermediate state of evolution may be expected. The main goal of this study is to detect and characterize, for the first time, the UCD population of compact groups. For that, 2 groups in different evolutionary stages, HCG 22 and HCG 90, were targeted with VLT/FORS2/MXU. We detect 16 and 5 objects belonging to HCG 22 and HCG 90, respectively, covering the magnitude range -10.0 > M_R > -11.5 mag. Their colours are consistent with old ages covering a broad range in metallicities. Photometric mass estimates put 4 objects in HCG 90 and 9 in HCG 22 in the mass range of UCDs (>2x10^6 M_Sun) for an assumed age of 12 Gyr. These UCDs are on average 2-3 times larger than typical Galactic GCs, covering a range of 2 >~ r_h >~ 21 pc. The UCDs in HCG 22 are more concentrated around the central galaxy than in HCG 90, at the 99% confidence level. They cover a broad range in [alpha/Fe] abundances from sub- to super-solar. The spectra of 3 UCDs show tentative evidence for intermediate age stellar populations. We calculate the specific frequency (S_N) of UCDs for both groups, finding that HCG 22 has about three times higher S_N than HCG 90. The ensemble properties of the detected UCDs supports 2 co-existing formation channels: a star cluster origin and an origin as tidally stripped dwarf nuclei. Our results imply that the UCDs detected in both groups do not, in their majority, originate from relatively recent galaxy interactions. Using high precision Monte Carlo simulations and a mean-field theory, we explore coarsening phenomena in a simple driven diffusive system. The model is reminiscent of vehicular traffic on a two-lane ring road. At sufficiently high density, the system develops jams (clusters) which coarsen with time. A key parameter is the passing probability, $\gamma$. For small values of $\gamma$, the growing clusters display dynamic scaling, with a growth exponent of 2/3. For larger values of $\gamma$, the growth exponent must be adjusted, suggesting the ordered (jammed) state is not a genuine phase but rather a finite size effect., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures.
