In 2013, the European pond turtle Emys orbicularis was first reintroduced in the Alsacian restored site of the Woerr (Lauterbourg). Knowledge and perceptions about this species and the place of its releases were assessed by surveys involving a sample of 143 informers, including 40 stakeholders/observers concerned by, or potentially interested in the topic. The study shows that this freshwater turtle is unknown locally. The decision to reintroduce it in northeastern France was essentially based on the ideology of a naturalist whose administrative responsabilities facilitated the implementation of this project in the favorable protectionist context of the time. The generally likeable image of the turtle makes it a symbol of wetland restoration and an emissary for remedial actions towards nature. A controversy over its indigenous status reveals a deeper debate about its reintroduction, such as the opportunity of monopolizing efforts and resources towards an already extinct species to the detriment of other vulnerable species at sites that do not benefit from specific protection. The Woerr site was selected because of its low human frequentation, its ecological assets as well as an administrative opportunity. Relations between residents and wetlands which now benefit from measures to protect nature in the core area, and irritating security measures at its periphery due to the presence of an industrial site, are marked by unease and fear, which slow down the appropriation of conservation actions. Heart failure (HF) is the leading cause of hospitalisation in the elderly in France. Early rehospitalisations are common, often through an emergency department. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of a primary care-hospital coordination network, with interventions by coordination nurses (IDEC), on the rehospitalisations after a first hospitalisation for acute decompensation in frail elderly HF patients. From 01/10/2019 to 01/10/2021, 237 patients aged > 75 years with frailty criteria, hospitalised in 8 departments of 5 private or public hospitals in the Yvelines Sud health territory were followed by an IDEC (hospital visit, telephone contacts, home visit(s)) within 3 months of their return home. This prospective observational study analysed the rate of consultations to the emergency room, rehospitalisations (total and for acute HF), and the number of events avoided at 90 days after discharge. The mean age of the patients was 87 years, 54% were women, 68% had a left ventricular ejection fraction > 40%, and 70% had atrial fibrillation. Non-cardiac comorbidities were very frequent. At 3-month follow-up, mortality was 9.3% (22/237), only 27 patients (11.3%) consulted the emergency room for acute HF, and the rehospitalisation rate for HF was 19.8%, without difference according to left ventricular ejection fraction. A consultation to the emergency room or a rehospitalisation for heart failure could be avoided for 10% of patients. This study suggests that a primary care-hospital coordination network with dedicated coordination nurses is useful for the management of very elderly frail patients following hospitalisation for heart failure, limiting visits to the emergency room and rehospitalisations. Outpatient treatment (OT) of patients with low-risk pulmonary embolisms (PE) is recommended. A multidisciplinary OT program including the general practitioner (GP) has been implemented at Versailles hospital in 2019. The objectives of the study were to assess the feasibility, safety and acceptability of the program. The feasibility of, and the inclusion criteria for OT were defined from a retrospective cohort study of PE patients carried out in 2018. In the prospective study, consecutive patients consulting in the emergency department between 2019 and 2021 with confirmed PE were eligible for OT if they had sPESI and HESTIA scores equal to 0, normal troponin and NT-pro-BNP levels, and no right ventricular dilation on imaging. PEs associated with COVID were excluded. The OT program included 4 appointments within 3 months, including 2 with the GP. Events (death, recurrence of PE or venous thromboembolism, bleeding, rehospitalisation) were collected at 3-month follow-up. In the retrospective study, 19% of the 138 PE patients seen in the emergency department were eligible for OT. No complication occurred at Day 90. In the prospective study, 313 consecutive patients with confirmed PE in the emergency department were included, 66 (21%) were eligible for OT. Overall, 43 patients (14%) received OT (39 eligible) and 27 patients eligible for OT were hospitalised (92% because of pulmonary infarction). At 3-month follow-up, there were no death, no recurrence of thromboembolism, and one patient has been early hospitalised for COVID; 3 female patients treated with rivaroxaban had minor bleeding (heavy menstrual bleeding). The satisfaction rate of general practitioner was 95%. This study confirms the feasibility and safety of our OT program for low-risk EP patients, centered on the general practitioner. Background: Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 is the receptor that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) uses for entry into lung cells. Because ACE-2 may be modulated by angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) and angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), there is concern that patients treated with ACEIs and ARBs are at higher risk of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia. Aim: This study sought to analyze the association of COVID-19 pneumonia with previous treatment with ACEIs and ARBs. Materials and methods: We retrospectively reviewed 684 consecutive patients hospitalized for suspected COVID-19 pneumonia and tested by polymerase chain reaction assay. Patients were split into two groups, according to whether (group 1, n = 484) or not (group 2, n = 250) COVID-19 was confirmed. Multivariable adjusted comparisons included a propensity score analysis. Results: The mean age was 63.6 ± 18.7 years, and 302 patients (44%) were female. Hypertension was present in 42.6% and 38.4% of patients in groups 1 and 2, respectively (P = 0.28). Treatment with ARBs was more frequent in group 1 than group 2 (20.7% vs. 12.0%, respectively; odds ratio [OR] 1.92, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.23–2.98; P = 0.004). No difference was found for treatment with ACEIs (12.7% vs. 15.7%, respectively; OR 0.81, 95% CI 0.52–1.26; P = 0.35). Propensity score-matched multivariable logistic regression confirmed a significant association between COVID-19 and previous treatment with ARBs (adjusted OR 2.36, 95% CI 1.38–4.04; P = 0.002). Significant interaction between ARBs and ACEIs for the risk of COVID-19 was observed in patients aged > 60 years, women, and hypertensive patients. Conclusions: This study suggests that ACEIs and ARBs are not similarly associated with COVID-19. While the heterogeneity among individuals of a population is more and more documented, questions on the paths through which it arises, particularly whether it is linked to fixed heterogeneity or chance alone, are still widely debated. Here, we tested how individual quality, energy allocation trade-offs, and environmental stochasticity define individual fitness. To do so, we simultaneously investigated the contribution of 18 life-history traits to the fitness of breeding little penguins (Eudyptula minor), using a structural equation model. Fitness was highly variable amongst the 162 birds monitored over their entire lifespan. It increased with the individual penguin's ability to increase (a) the number of breeding events (i.e. living longer, breeding younger, breeding more often, and producing more second clutches) and (b) the breeding success per event through increased foraging performances (i.e. mass gained at sea). While all three processes (stochasticity, individual quality, and allocation trade-offs) affected fitness, interindividual variability in fitness was mainly driven by individual quality, birds consistently breeding earlier in the season and displaying higher foraging efficiency exhibiting higher fitness. Wireless sensor networks may be used for the surveillance of large systems (bridges, tunnels, etc.) or in the management of disasters such as forest fires, or oil spills. In some of these applications, the topology of the network is going to be dynamic: a connected system can evolve into a clustered system that presents a break of the global connectivity. Using a collector which will regularly visit the disjoint clusters enables to restore a discreet connectivity. A session layer protocol is proposed to reconstitute a consistent global information system. It enables the collector to reconstruct the communication context with the previously visited clusters, knowing they could have moved, merged, or have split. A node sensor model has been integrated into the Riverbed Opnet Modeler network simulation environment. Background Few data are available on primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI) in nonagenarians. In a large prospective registry on pPCI for STEMI we compared the demographics, procedural and in-hospital outcomes between nonagenarians (age = 90 years) and patients aged < 90 years. Methods and results We included 26,157 consecutive patients with pPCI in the Greater Paris Area region between 2003 and 2011. Of these, 418 (1.6%) were = 90 years old. Nonagenarians (versus patients < 90 years) were more likely to be female (62.3% versus 22.5%, p < 0.0001), nonsmokers (81.6% versus 36.7%, p < 0.0001), in cardiogenic shock (Killip IV) upon admission (10.5% versus 4.8%, p < 0.001), and had significant co-morbidities. Over two-thirds of patients underwent procedures via the radial artery (61% versus 72.1%, p = 0.007). Both groups had high and similar angiographic success rates (98.1% versus 98.7%, p = 0.33). Drug-eluting stents were used less often in nonagenarians (4.4% versus 16.7%, p < 0.0001). Hospital mortality was significantly much higher in patients over 90 years old (24.9% versus 5.1%, p < 0.001) in univariate analysis. After adjustment for sex, cardiogenic shock, diabetes, triple vessel disease, drug-eluting stent use and glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors use, mortality remains higher in nonagenarian patients (OR: 4.31; 95% CI: 3.26-5.71, p < 0.0001). Conclusions In a real-world setting, we found important demographic differences in nonagenarian compared to younger patients. Despite achieving a high rate of reperfusion with pPCI using mainly radial access, similar to that achieved in younger patients, hospital mortality was higher in nonagenarians. Objective To evaluate the additional value of StentBoost® (SB), a motion-corrected X-ray technique that enhances stent visualization, for the assessment of stent deployment and procedure optimization during routine percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI). Background Underdeployment and malapposition of stents during PCI may lead to in-stent thrombosis and restenosis. Coronary angiography (CA) is of limited value for the assessment of stent deployment. Intravascular ultrasound and optical imaging techniques are the gold standard, but are used in <10% of routine PCIs. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 260 coronary lesions treated by stent implantation and assessed by SB during 168 consecutive PCI procedures. The immediate results of SB analysis and CA were assessed by 2 independent interventional cardiologists and compared. Results A total of 275 stents were implanted; 45% were drug-eluting stents (DES). Direct stenting was performed in 78%. Results of SB and angiography were concordant for 210 lesions: 194 stents were correctly deployed (75%) and 16 were underdeployed (6%), shown by both techniques. In 47 patients (18%), SB detected an underdeployment of the stent whereas the angiographic result was good. Postdilatation was performed on the basis of SB in 89% of these cases. The additional contribution of SB was higher for left main lesions and for DES, and was not affected by coronary calcifications. Conclusions This study confirmed the usefulness of the stent visualization enhancement technique StentBoost® in current PCI practice. Abstract: In research on networked control systems (NCSs), the performance of the control system is assumed to be affected by network-induced parameters such as delays, jitters, packet losses and link failures. In this paper, compensation methods are studied, in the framework of NCS while considering the protocol specifications. The aim is to propose two different methods for the control over a network, adaptive Smith predictor approach and robust control based approach, which are imposed by the accessible information about the network. First, a clock synchronization protocol is implemented in each device of the network, thereby providing the possibility of end-to-end delay measurement, and a compensation strategy based on this measurement and the adaptive Smith predictor approach is applied. Secondly, the end-to-end upper bound delay estimate is calculated on the basis of the network architecture and the traffic estimation, and then subsequently used in a robust control based compensation strategy. The switched Ethernet network is used as an example of the communication network of the NCS. Background Informal care from relatives provides the foundation of care for people with Alzheimer's disease (AD). It is important to understand the conditions under which carers perform their, often neglected, task. The dementia carer's survey aimed to identify carers' needs, differences between countries with regard to dementia care and the level of satisfaction of carers with utilised services. Methods The survey was conducted through Alzheimer Europe's member organisations in France, Germany, Poland, Spain and UK (Scotland). The survey was in the form of a questionnaire, and topics addressed included: demographics of carers and people with AD; time spent caring; disclosure of diagnosis; symptoms prompting diagnosis; diagnostic process; current and most distressing symptoms; carers' information requirements; evaluation of services. Results Each country had ∼200 responders. Time spent caring increases with disease severity, and 50% of carers of people with late-stage dementia spent more than 10 h/day caring. Activities of daily living and behaviour were cited as the most problematic symptoms, reported by 68% and 50% of carers, respectively. Provision of information on all aspects of AD was felt to be inadequate, with key services such as home support not available to the majority of carers. Only 17% of carers considered the level of care for the elderly in their country as good. Conclusions Further development of services and information provision are required to help carers in their everyday caring, including coping with problematic symptoms influencing areas such as activities of daily living and behaviour. Many theoretical models have been proposed to explain and predict the behaviour of air-breathing divers exploiting a food resource underwater. Many field observations of the behaviour of divers do not fit with the prediction that to maximize energetic gain divers should dive close to their aerobic diving limits. In an attempt to explain this paradox, proposed a model of diving behaviour that takes into account patchily distributed prey patches of varying quality. We tested this model experimentally in a simulated foraging set-up. We measured the diving behaviour of grey seals, Halichoerus grypus, diving to patches of varying prey density and distance from the surface. Our results were equivocal with respect to the model predictions. Seals responded to prey density, leaving low-quality patches earlier. However, this pattern was still evident at long dive distances, contrary to the prediction that during deep dives seals should stay at a patch regardless of prey density. While seals maximized dive durations at high prey densities and long distances, they did not do so at short distances. The apparent quitting strategy of the seals always produced higher net rates of energy gain than would have been achieved if they had remained at the foraging site up to their aerobic dive limit on every dive. These results indicate that seals'' diving behaviour, particularly bottom duration, may indicate the relative prey availability in their environment. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This study used retrospective interviews with 87 relatives to describe the experiences of patients who died by euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide (EAS) in the Netherlands. Most of the patients suffered from cancer (85%). The relatives were most often a partner (63%) or a child (28%) of the patient. Before explicitly requesting EAS most patients (79%) had spoken about their wishes concerning medical end-of-life decisions to be made at a later date. Hopeless suffering, loss of dignity, and no prospect of recovery were the most prevalent reasons for explicitly requesting EAS. According to the relative, in 92% of patients EAS had contributed favourably to the quality of the end of life, mainly by preventing or ending suffering. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: In recent decades significant developments in end-of-life care have taken place in The Netherlands. There has been more attention for palliative care and alongside the practice of euthanasia has been regulated. Objective: The aim of this paper is to describe the opinions of physicians with regard to the relationship between palliative care and euthanasia, and determinants of these opinions. Design: Cross-sectional. Setting/subjects: Representative samples of physicians ( n = 410), relatives of patients who died after euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide (EAS; n = 87), and members of the Euthanasia Review Committees (ERCs; n = 35). Measurements: Structured interviews with physicians and relatives of patients, and a written questionnaire for the members of the ERCs. Results: Approximately half of the physicians disagreed and one third agreed with statements describing the quality of palliative care in The Netherlands as suboptimal and describing the expertise of physicians with regard to palliative care as insufficient. Almost two thirds of the physicians disagreed with the suggestion that adequate treatment of pain and terminal care make euthanasia redundant. Having a religious belief, being a nursing home physician or a clinical specialist, never having performed euthanasia, and not wanting to perform euthanasia were related to the belief that adequate treatment of pain and terminal care could make euthanasia redundant. Conclusion: The study results indicate that most physicians in The Netherlands are not convinced that palliative care can always alleviate all suffering at the end of life and believe that euthanasia could be appropriate in some cases. The article focuses on the benefit of the patients as the core of the agenda of the European Commission as they set its Communication to the European Parliament on July 1, 2003. Commissioner Liikkanen stressed that benefits to patients comprised the heart of the new Commission initiative and that the commission would seek ways to improve patient information on medicines. This is so since the role of patients have changed dramatically over the years and not just recipients of medical care.

Abstract: Ethernet networks are based on a medium access method which is not deterministic. The use of such networks in factory environments (which are strongly time constraints) can absolutely not guarantee that the applications requirements will be respected. This paper presents a method based on genetic algorithms to minimize end-to-end delays by providing a good distribution of the devices on the network switches. The objective function is defined by using the network calculus which is a deterministic theory and enables to determine bounded delays. Abstract: This study investigates the background and evolution of requests to forgo treatment and hasten death in terminally ill cancer patients. Physicians participating in a nationwide study on end-of-life decision making were asked whether they were treating a terminally ill cancer patient whose life expectancy was longer than 1 week but no longer than 3 months and who they would continue to treat until the patient''s death. Of the 120 physicians who had a patient who met the inclusion criteria, 85 (70.8%) completed a questionnaire each month until the patient''s death. The questionnaire provided information on the patient''s symptoms, concerns, and requests involving end-of-life decisions. Most patients suffered from cancer of the gastrointestinal tract or the respiratory system, and 66% died within 2 months of the initial interview. The prevalence of requests involving end-of-life decisions increased during the last 3 months of a patient''s life. The evolution of a request was especially related to an increase in the number of severe symptoms and concerns. Requests to forgo treatment were related to general weakness, whereas loss of dignity was a major reason for requests to hasten death. Physical suffering alone appeared to lead to less drastic requests than suffering blended by concerns and psychological problems leading to requests for hastened death. Palliative care, directed at improving the quality of life of terminally ill patients, is generally not aimed at any form of postponing or hastening death. It is possible that high quality palliative care could prevent requests for euthanasia. However, empirical evidence on this issue is scarce. In a national survey of end-of-life medical decisions in The Netherlands the subject of care at the end of life has been addressed. Data on terminally ill cancer patients who died after their request was granted and euthanasia had been performed were compared with those of terminally ill cancer patients who did not request euthanasia. The results show that the prevalence and severity of symptoms e.g., pain, feeling unwell, nausea, was higher in patients who died after their request was granted and euthanasia had been performed. No differences concerning the treatment of symptoms or the care provided were found between the two groups. The Ethernet network is more and more used to interconnect industrial devices. The objective of this paper is to study the performances of such a network to support real-time communications. For this, first we propose a general representation to model a switched Ethernet network by using a sequence of elementary components such as buffers, multiplexers, etc. Second, we aggregate the individual temporal properties of each component given in the Cruz' survey to obtain a global formula enabling one to calculate the maximum end-to-end delay for any industrial communication scenarios. Finally, we deduce the limits of the switched Ethernet network regarding the number of input/output cards connected to the network and to the sizes of periodic and aperiodic messages. The number of infectious pathogens to which an individual has been exposed (pathogen burden) has been linked to the development and the prognosis of coronary artery disease (CAD). The interaction among infection, genetic host susceptibility, and CAD remains unclear. This study was aimed at evaluating the modulation of the association between CAD and pathogen burden, by serum levels of inflammatory markers and polymorphisms of the interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α genes. Immmunoglobulin (Ig) G or IgA antibodies to 8 pathogens were determined in 991 patients with CAD and 333 control subjects. Serum levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, fibrinogen, IL-6, and TNF-α were also measured. All subjects were genotyped for the IL-6/G-174C, the TNF/C-851T, and the TNF/G-308A polymorphisms. Analysis of single pathogens demonstrated a positive relation to the presence of CAD for some (Chlamydia pneumoniae, cytomegalovirus, Helicobacter pylori, and herpes virus simplex type 1), but not all pathogens. A strong association between increasing pathogen burden and CAD was confirmed, even after adjustment for risk factors. The prevalence of a high pathogen burden (≥4 pathogens) was 50% in patients and 21% in controls (p <0.0001). A high pathogen burden was associated with decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (p <0.001). The association between CAD and pathogen burden was modulated by the IL6/G-174C polymorphism, the odds ratio being higher in heterozygotes than in both types of homozygotes (p <0.05). This interaction appeared to be mediated by variations in serum IL-6 levels. No such interaction was detected with any of the 2 TNF-α polymorphisms. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Climate influences a variety of ecological processes. It acts through local environmental conditions such as temperature, winds, precipitations, oceanic currents, but also their interactions. Local environmental changes are often associated with large-scale phenomena. They drive exchanges of energy and biomass, and finally growth, recruitment and migration of species. The understanding of climate change impacts on marine ecosystems requires a better understanding of their effects on the apex of food webs. We here report results of recent studies showing the impact of large-scale environmental changes such as El Nin˜o, North Atlantic Oscillation and Antarctic circumpolar waves on the functioning of marine and insular ecosystems. These phenomena act at relatively small scales in time and space compared to climate changes, but they have similar consequences as predictions of climate change models. Milk composition was investigated throughout the10-mo pup-rearing period in subantarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus tropicalis) breeding on Amsterdam Island. The mean milk composition was 42.8% &+,mn; 5.7% lipid, 12.1% &+mn; 1.5% protein, and 42.6% &+mn; 7.3% water. Subantarctic fur seals breeding on Amsterdam Island produced one of the richest milks ever reported in otariids (20.4 &+mn; 2.9 kJ/g), with lipid content contributing 85% of total gross energy. The high lipid levels measured in the milk of subantarctic fur seals breeding on Amsterdam Island is consistent (i) with the relatively long time lactating females spend at sea, due to the relatively poor local trophic conditions near the colony that necessitate that they travel long distances to reach the foraging grounds, and (ii) with the consequently short time mothers spend with their pups ashore. Milk composition changed according to the time mothers were fasting ashore: milk produced during the first 2 d spent ashore, when more than 80% of milk transfer occurred, had higher levels of lipids, proteins, and gross energy than milk produced later during the visit ashore, suggesting that the pups were fed with two types of milk during a suckling period. Throughout the.year, mothers in good condition produced milk of higher lipid content than others, suggesting that individual foraging skills contribute to enhance milk quality. Milk lipid and gross energy content varied with pup age, according to quadratic relationships, increasing during the earlier stages of lactation before reaching asymptotic values when pups were 180 d old. The stage of lactation appears to be a better predictor of milk lipid content than the duration of the preceding foraging trip, suggesting.that either changes in the nutritional requirements of.the pup and/or seasonal changes in trophic conditions act on milk composition. We investigated prenatal investment in a large sexually dimorphic mammal, the subantarctic fur seal, Arctocephalus tropicalis, on Amsterdam Island in the Indian Ocean. Pups' sex ratio and body mass, body length, and body condition at birth were studied in relation to timing of birth and maternal characteristics (body length and body condition) during three consecutive breeding seasons. Pups' sex ratio did not differ from unity throughout the pupping period. The sex of the pup was related to neither maternal body length (i.e., maternal age) nor maternal body condition when mating occurred or at parturition (1 year later), which suggests that the sex ratio was not biased toward one sex during gestation. Newborn male pups were heavier and longer than female pups in all years. Longer mothers tended to arrive later in the season regardless of their body condition, and gave birth to heavier pups whatever the sex of the pup. Mothers in good condition gave birth to heavier male pups than mothers in poor condition, but no significant differences were found for female pups, suggesting that the costs of carrying male foetuses is higher than that of carrying female foetuses. Differences in allocation of maternal resources between male and female pups may be due to sex-related differences in body composition, since male pups were heavier than female pups for a given body length at birth. Thus, male and female foetuses may use maternal resources differently, with males growing in length whereas females appear to grow in body mass. The mothers we monitored over 2 consecutive years gave birth to pups that were similar in quality (in terms of birth mass) over years regardless of the sex of the previous pup and the mother's body length, suggesting that individual reproductive value is independent of maternal age. Furthermore, maternal body condition was not affected by the sex of the foetus, suggesting that there is no differential reproductive cost in carrying a male or a female foetus. Interannual differences in pup body size at birth suggest that environmental conditions such as prey availability during the last stages of gestation, and consequent maternal body condition, are important components of maternal investment in fur seals.Nous avons étudié l'investissement prénatal chez un grand mammifère à dimorphisme sexuel, l'Otarie à fourrure des l'îles Kerguelen, Arctocephalus tropicalis, se reproduisant sur l'île Amsterdam, dans l'océan Indien. The city is the territory of major societal and environmental challenges that has for several years now been accentuated by the loss of experiencing nature. The great 2020 lockdown led to a (re)-discovery of wild animals by residents. This situation invites us to question the different ways of co-existence by humans and wild animals in the same urbanized territory. This study, carried out during the first 2020 lockdown and based on a national survey, describes the spaces, species and way of meetings of city dwellers with wild animals in urban territories. A reflective discussion proposed by a geographer, an ethologist and an ecologist shows how these meetings first constrained to the private space opened up to public sensory spaces in response to a greater need for experiencing nature. Aquaculture's role in addressing food security has grown, with a spotlight on Asian carp species. Polyculture, i.e. cultivating multiple fish species in a single system, is being increasingly adopted for its resource efficiency and economic benefits. This practice for Asian fish for food and ornamental purposes is gaining traction in Europe despite their invasive potential. Rising temperatures due to climate change offer an opportunity for thermophilic Asian carps (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix and Aristichthys nobilis). Using GIS modeling (Maxent), we identified the possible settlement of Asian carp in Northern Europe amidst climate change. We analyzed carp global distribution centers, assessed the potential carp spread in Europe, and evaluated their potential suitability for polyculture systems. By 2050, H. molitrix may extend its range to 58–62° N latitude, with a potential 1.7-fold habitat increase, while A. nobilis, which are more heat-tolerant, may move north to 52–58° N latitude, with a 1.3-fold potential increase. Despite the slight ecological differences in their native habitats, niche modeling indicates that these carp can occupy similar niches in Europe (proven statistically). The eventuality of using Asian species for polyculture in Europe presents both opportunities and challenges in the face of a changing climate as long as invasion risks are prevented. Background: Collaborations between patient organisations (POs) and the pharmaceutical industry can help identify and address the unmet needs of people living with a disease. In Alzheimer's disease (AD), the scale and complexity of the current unmet needs call for a broad and cross‐sectoral collaboration, including people living with Alzheimer's (PLWA), their care partners and the wider research community. Objective: This study aimed to describe learnings from the Finding Alzheimer's Solutions Together (F.A.S.T.) Council, a collaboration between POs and Roche, convened to better understand the unmet needs of PLWA and their care partners. Results: 1. Learnings from the collaboration, including clarifying objectives and members' expectations upfront, and establishing a set of guiding values and engagement principles. 2. Insights and recommendations for improving care in AD, including a wide range of unmet needs and potential solutions, systematically captured throughout the PLWA journey. These have resulted in several published reports and other outcomes, including (1) 'Portraits of care', highlighting the role of care partners, and the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 on care; (2) Clinical trial guidebook, recommending how PLWA and care partner experience can be incorporated into trial design; (3) 'Commitments Catalogue', highlighting progress by governmental organisations in achieving their commitments; and (4) a report to guide policy on improving diversity, equity and inclusion in clinical trials. Conclusions: Close collaboration between POs and the pharmaceutical industry in AD can enable effective research, in which PLWA and care partners are engaged as 'experts through experience' to help identify key unmet needs and co‐create solutions with the wider AD research community. This paper and the work undertaken by the F.A.S.T. Council may act as a blueprint for meaningful collaboration between POs and the pharmaceutical industry. For ectotherms, behaviour and associated energetic costs are directly related to thermal conditions. In the present context of global change, estimating time-budget for these species is relevant to assess and predict their capacity to adapt to near future. We tested the hypothesis that in ectotherms where reproduction is highly energy consuming, energy expenditure should vary throughout the breeding season with a maximum around nesting events. To test this hypothesis, we assessed the fine-scale behaviour, time-budget and estimated energetic costs in eight adult female European pond turtles Emys orbicularis equipped with data-loggers recording ambient temperature, pressure, light and the animals' 3-axis acceleration. Deployments occurred over four months throughout the nesting season 2017 in semi-natural captive conditions in Alsace, France. All study turtles showed a clear daily pattern over the 24h cycle, with four distinct phases (referred to as Night, Morning, Midday and Evening), associated with different behaviours and activity levels. Before oviposition, turtles were mostly active during Morning, and activity was positively driven by ambient temperature. Activity levels doubled during the nesting period, mostly due to the increased activity in the Evening, when nesting events occurred. Throughout the active season, basking occurrence at Midday was related to air temperature but cloud coverage was an even more important factor. Our results are a first step in predicting the seasonal time and energy budgets of the European pond turtle, and demonstrate the usefulness of animal-borne accelerometers to study free living freshwater turtles over extended periods of time. There are all sort of indications that Internet usage will go only upwards, resulting in an increase in energy consumption and CO2 emissions. At the same time, a significant amount of this carbon footprint corresponds to the information and communication technologies (ICT) sector, with around one third being due to networking. In this paper we have approached the problem of green networking from the point of view of sustainability. Here, alongside energy-aware routing, we have also introduced pollution-aware routing with environmental metrics like carbon emission factor and non-renewable energy usage percentage. We have proposed an algorithm based on these three candidate-metrics. Our algorithm provides optimum data and control planes for three different metrics which regulate the usage of different routers and adapt the bandwidth of the links while giving the traffic demand requirements utmost priority. We have made a comparison between these three metrics in order to show their impact on greening routing. The results show that for a particular scenario, our pollution-aware routing algorithm can reduce 36% and 20% of CO2 emissions compared to shortest path first and energy-based solutions, respectively. While many species suffer from human activities, some like geese benefit and may show range expansions. In some cases geese (partially) gave up migration and started breeding at wintering and stopover grounds. Range expansion may be facilitated and accompanied by physiological changes, especially when associated with changes in migratory behaviour. Interspecific comparisons found that migratory tendency is associated with a higher basal or resting metabolic rate (RMR). We compared RMR of individuals belonging to a migratory and a sedentary colony of barnacle geese Branta leucopsis. The migratory colony is situated in the traditional arctic breeding grounds (Russia), whereas the sedentary colony has recently been established in the now shared wintering area (the Netherlands). We measured RMR by oxygen consumption () during two ontogenetic phases (juvenile growth and adult wing moult). We also investigated juvenile growth rates and adult body mass dynamics. Mass‐independent was 13.6% lower in goslings from the sedentary colony than in goslings from the migratory colony. Similarly, in adult geese, mass‐independent was 15.5% lower in sedentary than in migratory conspecifics. Goslings in the Netherlands grew 36.2% slower than goslings in Russia, while we found no differences in body dimensions in adults. Adult geese from both colonies commenced wing moult with similar body stores, but whereas Russian barnacle geese maintained this level throughout moult, body stores in geese from the Netherlands fell, being 8.5% lower half‐way through the moult. We propose that the colony differences in resting metabolic rate, growth rate and body mass dynamics during moult can be explained by environmental and behavioural differences. The less stringent time constraints combined with poorer foraging opportunities allow for a smaller 'metabolic machinery' in non‐migratory geese. Data centers are estimated to have the fastest growing carbon footprint from across the whole information and communication technology (ICT) sector. Evaluating the performance of data centers in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability is becoming an increasingly important matter for organizations and governments (e.g., for regulation or reputation purposes). It nonetheless remains difficult to achieve such evaluation, as data centers imply to take into consideration a wide range of dimensions and stakeholders. Even though a wide range of sustainability performance indicators exist in the literature, there is still a lack of frameworks to help data center stakeholders (spanning from data center owners, governmental regulators to engineers/field operators) to evaluate and understand how a data center performs in terms of sustainable development/behavior. Our research work proposes such a framework, whose originality lies in the combination of state-of-the-art sustainability metrics with the biomimicry commandments of eco-mature system, which enables holistic sustainability assessment of data centres. From a theoretical perspective, the proposed model is designed based on a benefit-cost analysis using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique. This approach allows data center stakeholders for specifying their own preferences and/or expertise in the comparison process, whose practicability is demonstrated in this paper considering three data center candidates, which are respectively located in France, Germany and Sweden. • A new model for comparing data center sustainability performance is proposed. • The model makes use of state-of-the-art sustainability metrics together with biomimicry lessons. • The model is designed based on a benefit-cost approach using the AHP technique. • A comparison study is carried out with three distinct data center candidates. The dramatic worldwide decline in populations of the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) is largely due to the high mortality associated with their interaction with fisheries, so a reduction of this overlap is critical to their survival. The discovery of narrow migration corridors used by the leatherbacks in the Pacific Ocean raised the possibility of protecting the turtles by restricting fishing in these key areas. Here we use satellite tracking to show that there is no equivalent of these corridors in the North Atlantic Ocean, because the turtles disperse actively over the whole area. But we are able to identify a few ‘hot spots’ where leatherbacks meet fisheries and where conservation efforts should be focused. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Semi-aquatic European water frogs (Pelophylax spp.) harbour rich helminth infra-communities, whose effects on host population size in nature are poorly known. To study top-down and bottom-up effects, we conducted calling male water frog counts and parasitological investigations of helminths in waterbodies from different regions of Latvia, supplemented by descriptions of waterbody features and surrounding land use data. We performed a series of generalized linear model and zero-inflated negative binomial regressions to determine the best predictors for frog relative population size and helminth infra-communities. The highest-ranked (by Akaike information criterion correction, AICc) model explaining the water frog population size contained only waterbody variables, followed by the model containing only land use within 500 m, while the model containing helminth predictors had the lowest rank. Regarding helminth infection responses, the relative importance of the water frog population size varied from being non-significant (abundances of larval plagiorchiids and nematodes) to having a similar weight to waterbody features (abundances of larval diplostomids). In abundances of adult plagiorchiids and nematodes the best predictor was the host specimen size. Environmental factors had both direct effects from the habitat features (e.g., waterbody characteristics on frogs and diplostomids) and indirect effects through parasite-host interactions (impacts of anthropogenic habitats on frogs and helminths). Our study suggests the presence of synergy between top-down and bottom-up effects in the water frog–helminth system that creates a mutual dependence of frog and helminth population sizes and helps to balance helminth infections at a level that does not cause over-exploitation of the host resource. This paper reflects Alzheimer Europe's position on PPI (patient and public involvement) in the context of dementia research and highlights some of the challenges and potential risks and benefits associated with such meaningful involvement. The paper was drafted by Alzheimer Europe in collaboration with members of INTERDEM and the European Working Group of People with Dementia. It has been formally adopted by the Board of Alzheimer Europe and endorsed by the Board of INTERDEM and by the JPND working group ‘Dementia Outcome Measures - Charting New Territory’. Alzheimer Europe is keen to promote the involvement of people with dementia in research, not only as participants but also in the context of PPI, by generating ideas for research, advising researchers, being involved in consultations and being directly involved in research activities. This position paper is in keeping with this objective. Topics covered include, amongst others, planning involvement, establishing roles and responsibilities, training and support, managing information and input from PPI, recognising the contribution of people with dementia involved in research in this way, promoting and protecting the rights and well-being of people with dementia, training and support, and promoting an inclusive approach and the necessary infrastructure for PPI in dementia research. Wetlands are of great importance for biodiversity and nature conservation, especially geographically isolated wetlands (GIW). Yet literature about the ecological value of such GIW is missing, especially at the edge of the distribution of endangered species such as amphibians. In 2018 and 2022, we monitored amphibian communities in 15 isolated (GIW) and 12 non-isolated (nGIW) ponds by counting individuals using three methods: (1) capturing with hand nets, (2) visual counting, and (3) capturing with fyke traps. The three methods provided similar results, showing the great importance of GIW for amphibians, especially newts, whose abundance was 5–13 times greater in GIW compared to nGIW. The largest numbers of species and individuals (adults and larvae) were found in isolated wetlands (GIW). In non-isolated water bodies (nGIW) where more than 10 individuals of the Chinese sleeper Perccottus glenii, an alien invasive fish, were found, amphibians were not found at all. Importantly, between 2018 and 2022, the northern crested newt, T. cristatus, dramatically decreased in the nGIW. As a result of our work, it was revealed that the reconstruction of geographically isolated wetlands is very important for the conservation of amphibian biodiversity in a changing climate. One of the most effective measures aimed at protecting amphibians from negative factors—the spread of alien invasive fish species and diseases—is the reconstruction of wetlands in historically exploited landscapes with the creation of a wide range of water bodies yet broadly dominated by geographically isolated ponds. In the modern world, when the problems of the environment are most acutely associated with climate change, amphibians are considered to be the most vulnerable group of anamniotes as an indicator of the state of wetlands. Along with a decrease of numbers among amphibians in Europe, nowadays newts especially suffer from the impact of invasive species, in particular predators such as the Chinese sleeper, Perccottus glenii. This predatory fish species has recently spread to areas of primary relevance for newt reproduction. This fish consumes eggs, larvae, and even adult newt individuals. Using an ecological niche approach and climate based species distribution models (SDM), we applied the coefficient of determination (R2) for comparing the level of similarity of the built SDM for the newts Triturus cristatus and Lissotriton vulgaris, and the Chinese sleeper. We show that by 2050, the level of climatic niche similarity for these native and invasive species will increase from 12% to 22% throughout Europe, and from 44% to 66% in Eastern Europe. This study highlights the expansion of the Chinese sleeper as a real threat to European biodiversity of wetlands in the near future, especially in their most northeastern distribution range. Aims and objectives To report the findings of a review of literature relating to the continence care of community-dwelling people with dementia in Europe. Background More than two-thirds of people with dementia live at home, and many experience continence problems. Incontinence is a significant contributor towards institutionalisation. Care and support is often inadequate or inappropriate, and guidelines are lacking. This represents a failure to respect the human rights and dignity of this group. Design A structured review of the literature relating to the continence care of community-dwelling people with dementia in Europe with a focus on problems and challenges. Methods Search terms reflecting dementia, continence, care/management and guidelines for community-dwelling people with dementia were applied to four databases. Hand-searching was also carried out. A total of 208 articles were searched for content relating to problems and challenges linked to continence care for this group. Results Six relevant articles were fully reviewed. The main difficulties and challenges included the following: (1) perceptions, (2) availability/provision of support and care, (3) financial cost, (4) mobility and the environment, (5) relationships and social inclusion and (6) emotional issues. Conclusion Dementia and incontinence have profound effects on quality of life. The dearth of good quality data within this area and the findings of the review confirm the need for expert, consensus-based guidelines and appropriate research to ensure that the rights and dignity of people with dementia are respected. Relevance to clinical practice The findings of the review will hopefully raise awareness amongst healthcare professionals in community practice of unmet needs of people with dementia and continence problems, and their caregivers, especially those related to social, financial, emotional and relational issues. Aims: We aim to identify existing empowerment interventions for people living with dementia and to explore which used interventions and projects are considered empowering and why. Design: This was an online survey. Methods: We conducted an online survey between May 2018 and July 2018 amongst professionals interested in dementia care in Europe. Interventions were clustered within the ecological model for health promotion. Reasons from respondents as to why they considered interventions to be empowering were analysed and structured according to a recently developed conceptual framework of empowerment for people living with dementia. Results: Seventy‐three respondents from 23 countries together mentioned 98 interventions or projects, of which 90 were unique. Interventions focused on the (inter)personal (n = 54), organizational (n = 15), communal (n = 6) and societal (n = 15) levels. A broad range of interventions were considered empowering, but no interventions were specifically developed for, nor aimed at, empowerment. Reasons as to why respondents considered these interventions as empowering fitted the framework's domains. Conclusion: This European survey provides insights into interventions considered empowering for people living with dementia. An important step that needs to be taken is to develop and test interventions that specifically aim to promote empowerment for people living with dementia. Impact Empowerment may encourage people with dementia to live the life they choose, and focus on what is possible, instead of what is no longer possible. Many interventions are considered as empowering for people living with dementia, however no interventions could be identified that were specifically developed for or aimed at empowerment. This study shows that for promoting empowerment, it is necessary to develop and test interventions that specifically aim for empowerment, do this in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, and in this way support people living with dementia to live according to their competencies, talents and wishes. More and more frequently, clinical trials for Alzheimer disease (AD) are targeting cognitively unimpaired individuals who are at increased risk of developing the disease. It is not always clear whether AD biomarker information should be disclosed to research participants: on the one hand, research participants may be interested in learning this information because of its perceived utility, but on the other hand, learning this information may be harmful, as there are very few effective preventive or therapeutic options available for AD. In this article, we bring together three separate sets of ethical guidance literature: on the return of individual research results, on an individual's right to access personal data, and on transparent enrollment into clinical trials. Based on these literatures, we suggest policies for the disclosure of AD biomarker test results in longitudinal observational cohort studies, clinical trials, and hybrid research projects, such as the European Prevention of Alzheimer's Dementia (EPAD) project, in which we served as an ethics team. We also present and critically discuss recommendations for disclosure of AD biomarkers in practice. We underscore that, as long as the clinical validity of AD biomarkers remains limited, there are good reasons to avoid actively disclosing them to cognitively unimpaired research participants. Aims and objectives To gain an insight into strategies, adopted by Dutch respiratory nurses during clinic sessions, to improve self-management of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is highly prevalent and a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, impacting on quality of life and healthcare expenditure. Health promotion is therefore an important consideration. By applying specific strategies, respiratory nurses can play a major role in the promotion of self-management. Research has shown that respiratory nurses, who run clinics, have insufficient knowledge of evidence-based strategies that can be adopted to promote self-management among chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients. It appears that respiratory nurses adopt their own strategies during clinic sessions. Design A qualitative research study was carried out using Grounded Theory method. Methods Data were collected during open interviews conducted by an external researcher with a nursing background. The interviews were analysed through coding after which categories were developed. Results Fourteen respiratory nurses were interviewed. The results show that respiratory nurses emphasise quitting smoking during the consult. Attention is also paid to inhalation medication and techniques. Other self-management strategies that respiratory nurses use are: application of specific interviewing techniques, referring to other healthcare professionals and providing tools for coping with the illness in everyday life. Conclusion and relevance to clinical practice The main emphasis during the clinic session is directed at quitting smoking. Other self-management strategies such as providing information regarding nutrition and exercise, instilling confidence and becoming an equal discussion partner, gain less attention. During the clinic session, respiratory nurses should also focus on these self-management strategies in addition to quitting smoking. Further research should be directed at self-management strategies used by respiratory nurses in relation to different characteristics of patients. In this way, a more patient-oriented form of consultation could be developed for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
