Abstract

A study was done on the formation, composition, and physical properties of the pure films and mixed monolayers using ellipsometry, water contact angle measurements and spectroscopic methods. It was shown that the use of patterns designed to promote specific types of cell alignment and interaction allow the geometric control of the adhesion and growth of mammalian neural and endothelial cells. In addition, it was further shown that monolayers need not be well-ordered to achieve selective adhesiveness.

Abstract

A process for forming spatially oriented neo-vascular capillaries comprising: (a) providing a combination ultra-thin film (UTF) pattern of at least one cell adhesion promoter and at least one cell adhesion inhibitor wherein the cell adhesion promoters nave a linewidth of between about 50-490 microns; (b) seeding the combination UTF pattern with endothelial cells at an initial seeding cell density; (c) adding a first medium for incubating the seeded endothelial cells until the endothelial cells are grown to confluency; (d) replacing the first medium with a second medium at confluency; and (e) allowing the endothelial cells to differentiate into spatially oriented neo-vascular capillaries., Supersedes PAT-APPL-234 034, AD DO16 321

Tubules which contain an active agent in their lumen and compositions containing such microtubules are effective for providing a slow, controlled release of the active agent. Abstract

High aspect ratio metal microstructures may be prepared by a method involving (1) forming a layer of a photoresistance on a substrate; (2) exposing the layer to actinic radiation in an image wise manner and developing the exposed layer to obtain a surface which contains regions having no remaining photoresist and regions covered with photoresist; (3) metallizing the surface to form a layer of metal on the region of the surface having no remaining photoresist and on the sides of the regions of photoresist remaining on the surface; and (4) optionally, stripping the photoresist remaining on the surface. Abstract

Tabular, spheroidal, and helical lipid microstructures are individually clad with a metal coat deposited on the microstructures by an electroless plating bath. In metal cladding the microstructures, the surfaces of the lipid microstructures are sensitized by adsorption thereon of a catalytic precursor which enables metal from the electroless plating bath to deposit upon and adhere to the sensitized surface. The metal plate is electrically conductive and may also be magnetic. A composite material is produced by embedding the metal clad microstructures in a matrix of a polymer such as an epoxy or a polyurethane. Keywords: Patents. (js), Supersedes PAT-APPL-63 029-87.

Method and process for forming selected microstructures having predetermined shape and dimension from surfactants comprising the steps of: selecting a lipid which self aggregates into a predetermined microstructure selected from the group of helices and tubules; selecting a lipid solvating organic solvent; dissolving the selected lipid in the selected organic solvent; adding a predetermined amount of non-solvent to the selected organic solvent; and allowing the solution to sit for a predetermined period of time at a predetermined temperature.
