Abstract: Using data from the TPC/Two-Gamma experiment at the SLAC [ital e][sup +][ital e[minus]] storage ring PEP, a [ital C]=+1 resonance has been observed in the [pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]][pi][sup 0][gamma] final state resulting from the fusion of one nearly real and one quite virtual photon. The actual decay channel is probably [pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]][pi][sup 0][pi][sup 0], where one final-state photon is not detected, and the mass of the fully reconstructed state would be approximately 1525 MeV. A four-pion decay mode in turn implies that the resonance has even isospin. The nonobservation of this [ital R](1525) when both initial-state photons are nearly real suggests a spin-1 assignment. Since the large measured value of the product of the branching ratio into [pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]][pi][sup 0][pi][sup 0] and the [gamma][gamma] coupling makes it unlikely that this state is the mostly [ital [bar s]s] [ital f][sub 1](1510), its interpretation may lie outside of conventional meson spectroscopy. There is a second, less-significant enhancement observed in the same reaction at a four-pion mass centered around 2020 MeV.

Abstract: Two-photon production of the charmonium state χ c has been studied by the TPC/Two-Gamma experiment at the SLAC e + e − collider PEP. We observe evidence of the χ c 2 state in the channel γγ → χ c 2 , χ c 2 → γJ / ψ , J / ψ → l + l − and obtain a value of Γ γγ ( χ c 2 )=3.4±1.7±0.9 keV. This is the first observation of the two-photon production of a χ c state. Comparison is made with previous experimental results and QCD predictions for Γ γγ ( χ c 2 ).

Abstract: Evidence is presented for the charge-exchange photoproduction, in two distinct reactions, of an isovector {rho}{pi} state of mass {similar to}1775 MeV. Results of an analysis of the decay-angular distributions are also presented, from which it is concluded that {ital J}{sup {ital P}}=1{sup {minus}}, 2{sup {minus}}, or 3{sup +}.

Abstract: We have measured the polarization of {ital D}{sup *}, the energy dependence of the polarization, and the spin-density matrix of {ital D}{sup *} in {ital e}{sup +}{ital e{minus}} annihilation at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV using the Time Projection Chamber detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP. In 147 pb{sup {minus}1} of data we see no strong evidence for polarization, alignment, or final-state interactions in this fragmentation process.

Abstract: We examine the negative 3{pi} final state produced in association with {Delta}{sup ++}(1232) in the reaction {gamma}{ital p}{r arrow}{Delta}{sup ++}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup {minus}} at an incident photon energy of 19.3 GeV. The most prominent enhancement in the 3{pi} spectrum occurs at a mass and with a width consistent with the parameters of the {ital a}{sub 2}(1320). This identification is confirmed by the various angular distributions. The {ital a}{sub 2} production cross section, corrected for efficiencies and alternate {ital a}{sub 2} decay modes, is 0.45{plus minus}0.05 {mu}b.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the total cross section for {gamma}{gamma}{r arrow}hadrons, with one photon quasireal and the other a spacelike photon of mass squared {minus}{ital Q}{sup 2}. Results are presented as a function of {ital Q}{sup 2} and the {gamma}{gamma} center-of-mass energy {ital W}, with the {ital Q}{sup 2} range extending from 0.2 to 60 GeV{sup 2}, and {ital W} in the range from 2 to 10 GeV. The data were taken with the TPC/Two-Gamma facility at the SLAC {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}} storage ring PEP, which was operated at a beam energy of 14.5 GeV. The cross section exhibits a gentle falloff with increasing {ital W}. Its {ital Q}{sup 2} dependence is shown to be well described by an incoherent sum of vector-meson and pointlike scattering over most of the observed {ital W} range. Agreement at high {ital Q}{sup 2} is improved if a minimum-{ital p}{sub {ital T}} cutoff (motivated by QCD) is imposed on the pointlike contribution.

Abstract: We present branching fraction measurements of three-prong decays of the [tau][sup [minus]] lepton based on data from the TPC/Two-Gamma detector at SLAC PEP. The decays are classified according to the identities of the charged tracks to give simultaneous measurements of [ital B][[tau][sup [minus]][r arrow][nu][sub [tau]] [ital K][sup [minus]][pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]]]=0.58[sub [minus]0.13][sup +0.15]% and [ital B][[tau][sup [minus]][r arrow][nu][sub [tau]] [ital K][sup [minus]][ital K][sup +][pi][sup [minus]]]=0.15[sub [minus]0.07][sup +0.09]%, and upper limits of [ital B][[tau][sup [minus]][r arrow][nu][sub [tau]][pi][sup [minus]][ital K][sup +][pi][sup [minus]]][lt]0.25%, [ital B][[tau][sup [minus]][r arrow][nu][sub [tau]] [ital K][sup [minus]][pi][sup +][ital K][sup [minus]]][lt]0.09%, and [ital B][[tau][sup [minus]][r arrow][nu][sub [tau]] [ital K][sup [minus]][ital K][sup +][ital K][sup [minus]]][lt]0.21%, where additional neutrals may be present in each case. The branching fractions are normalized to the world average three-prong topological branching fraction and there is an estimated 20% systematic error in addition to the listed statistical errors. We find the mass distributions in the [ital K][sup [minus]][pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]] decay are consistent with [ital K][sub 1] dominance, and obtain branching fractions of [ital B][[tau][sup [minus]][r arrow][nu][sub [tau]] [ital K][sub 1][sup [minus]](1270)]=0.41[sub [minus]0.35][sup +0.41]% and [ital B][[tau][sup [minus]][r arrow][nu][sub [tau]] [ital K][sub 1][sup [minus]](1400)]=0.76[sub [minus]0.33][sup +0.40]%.

Abstract: The TPC/Two-Gamma Collaboration has measured the inclusive cross section for production of charmed D∗± mesons in photon-photon collisions. The reaction utilized was e+e-→e+e-D∗±X, with D∗±→DOπ+-, DO→K-+π ±, and either zero or one outgoing e± detected. The result, σ(e + e - → e + e - D ∗± X) = 74±26±19 pb , is in agreement with the quark parton mo del prediction for e+e- → e+e-c c , combined with a Lund model for the hadronization of the charmed quarks.

Abstract: In an exposure of the Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber to the dichromatic antineutrino beam, 427 ${\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}$ charged-current interactions were obtained. Taking advantage of the small and well understood background flux of ${\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{e}'\mathrm{s}$ in the dichromatic ${\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}$ beam, upper limits on the rates of antineutrino oscillations are obtained, with the precision limited by statistical rather than systematic errors, in contrast to previous experiments. Abstract: In an exposure of the Fermilab 15-foot neon-hydrogen bubble chamber to a quadrupole triplet neutrino beam, 49 ..mu../sup -/e/sup +/ and 14 ..mu../sup +/e/sup -/ events with e/sup + -/ momenta greater than 0.3 GeV/c have been observed, yielding ..mu..e rates per charged-current event of (0.73 +- 0.11)% and (1.1 +- 0.3)%, respectively. The ..mu../sup -/e/sup +/ rate shows no strong energy dependence in the range from 30 to 300 GeV. The 18 neutral strange particles observed in the 63 events contain 14 K/sup 0//sub S/, 2 ..lambda.., and 2 ..lambda../K/sup 0//sub S/ ambiguities, suggesting that the events are predominantly D-meson production and decay and that the ..lambda../sup +//sub c/..--> lambda..eX branching ratio is very small. The corrected numbers of neutral strange particles per ..mu../sup -/e/sup +/ and ..mu../sup +/e/sup -/ event are 1.2 +- 0.3 and 0.6/sup +0.6//sub -0.3/, respectively. Properties of the events, including strange-particle production, are compared to ..mu../sup - +/..mu../sup + -/ events in the same experiment and to a charm production and decay model, and good agreement is found, apart from a possible enhancement at approx.5--6 GeV/c/sup 2/ in the mass of the system recoiling against the ..mu../sup +/ in ..mu../sup +/e/sup -/ (and ..mu../supmore » +/..mu../sup -/) events. As reported previously, four events show short-lived-particle decays, and D-meson lifetime estimates are reevaluated using the final event sample. One ..mu../sup +/e/sup +/ and three ..mu../sup -/e/sup -/ events were observed. The ..mu../sup -/e/sup -/ events are consistent with background and lead to a ..mu../sup -/e/sup -//..mu../sup -/e/sup +/ ratio of less than 0.07 (90% confidence level) for e/sup + -/ momenta above 0.8 GeV/c. Five candidates for dilepton production by electron neutrinos and antineutrinos in the beam are consistent with approximately 1% rates. No good three-lepton candidates were found, and one, previously reported, four-lepton candidate was found.« less

Abstract: A study of 205-GeV/c ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p$ interactions has been made with a 48 800-picture exposure in the bare Fermilab 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber. The average number of charged particles produced per inelastic interaction is 7.99\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06. The elastic cross section is 3.18\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.13 mb and the total cross section is 24.19\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.44 mb. The inclusive cross sections for neutral-particle production are: $\ensuremath{\sigma}(\ensuremath{\gamma})=171.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}15.3$ mb, $\ensuremath{\sigma}({K}_{S}^{0})=3.64\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.61$ mb ($xl0.3$), $\ensuremath{\sigma}(\ensuremath{\Lambda})=1.71\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.34$ mb ($xl0.3$), and $\ensuremath{\sigma}(\overline{\ensuremath{\Lambda}})=0.59\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.23$ mb ($xl0.1$). The average number of ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}'\mathrm{s}$ produced per inelastic collision is consistent with a linear rise with the number of charged particles, and about equal to the number of produced ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ or ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$. The average number of ${K}^{0}'\mathrm{s}$, $\ensuremath{\Lambda}'\mathrm{s}$, and $\overline{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}'\mathrm{s}$ is consistent with very little dependence on the number of charged particles. General characteristics of neutral-particle production are presented and compared with other experiments. For each topology the produced neutral energy is $\ensuremath{\sim}\frac{1}{3}$ of the incident energy.

Abstract: In a 48 000-picture exposure of the Fermilab 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber to a 205 GeV/ c π − beam, we have measured 169 events of the reaction, π − p → π − π + π − p, with a cross section of 635 ± 61 μ b. This reaction proceeds almost entirely via low mass π − → 3 π and p → p ππ dissociation. Factorization is satisfied for p → pππ dissociation in πp and pp interactions.

Abstract: Diffractive dissociation of neutrons and N ∗ production are studied in the reaction π − n → π − π − p at 15 GeV/ c . The reaction is dominated by a broad, low-mass diffractive enhancement in the pπ − mass. Evidence is presented for the production of at least one N ∗ resonance in the mass region 1.4–1.8 GeV. Comparison with ISR data suggest that this N ∗ resonance is produced by pomeron exchange. The N ∗ production occurs predominantly at t ′ > 0.1 GeV 2 which suggests a different coupling from the usual diffractive reactions. The non-resonant diffractive background is compared with a double-Regge model and the statistical dissociation model.

Abstract: We report observation of a neutrino (antineutrino)-induced event with two electrons, one positron, one positively charged muon, a neutral K meson, and seven gammas in an experiment performed in the FNAL 15-ft. bubble chamber with a 47% atomic mixture of neon in hydrogen. Estimated experimental electron backgrounds are ∼10 −4 per track. At present we have no plausible interpretation of this event.

Abstract: The inclusive ϱ ° production cross section has been measured in the reaction π − p → π + π − X at 205 GeV/ c . We find σ ( ϱ ° ) = 13.5 ± 3.4 mb, with most of the production occuring in the central region. Assuming σ ( ϱ + ) ≈ σ ( ϱ − ) ≈ σ ( ϱ ° ), it is concluded that approximately one-third of the pions at this energy come from ϱ -decay.

Abstract: Eleven neutral and nine charged decays of charmed particles have been observed in a sample of 205 000 hadronic interactions in a 1.2-million-picture exposure of the SLAC Hybrid Facility bubble chamber to a 20-GeV/c backward-scattered laser beam. The charged and neutral lifetimes were determined to be ${8.2}_{\ensuremath{-}2.5}^{+4.5}$\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\ensuremath{-}13}$ and ${6.7}_{\ensuremath{-}2.0}^{+3.5}$\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\ensuremath{-}13}$ sec, respectively, with a ratio of ${1.2}_{\ensuremath{-}0.5}^{0.9}$.

Abstract: Inelastic channels in ..pi../sup -/p interactions at 205 GeV/c are studied as a function of charged-particle multiplicity n/sub ch/. Experimental tests are made which are sensitive to the charge-dependent behavior of the particles, particularly at high and low rapidities. A set of new variables useful for the study of these processes is introduced. Effects which may be attributed to leading particles or leading jets are present to some extent for all n/sub ch/. Among the results presented, it is shown that at this energy there is no ''central region'' which is completely free of effects which are correlated with the charges of the incident particles. Qualitative interpretation of the results in terms of cluster-model ideas is presented; a specific simple model is calculated and compared with the data.

28. Rescattering in the nucleus forπ−dinteractions at 15 GeV/c

Abstract: We present the ..pi../sup -/d charged multiplicity distributions at 15 GeV/c and examine the probability that the products of a ..pi../sup -/n collision in a deuterium nucleus rescatter on the proton. Averaged over all topologies, this probability is 0.13 +- 0.02. The rescatter probability as a function of the number of charged particles produced in the ..pi../sup -/n interaction exhibits an increase at high multiplicity.

Abstract: In 205 GeV / c π − p inelastic interactions, negative particles with transverse momentum greater than 1.0 GeV / c moving forward in the center of mass outnumber similar positive particles by a factor of 3.7 to 1, greatly in excess of the corresponding ratio for small transverse momentum. The asymmetry is reversed in the backward direction. The forward asymmetry is most prominent in 2-, 4-, and 6-prong interactions, but both forward and backward asymmetries are also substantial for higher multiplicity interactions.

Abstract: Examination of a sample of 89 high-energy, neutrino-induced dilepton events produced in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber has resulted in the direct observation of the production and visible semi-leptonic decay of short-lived particles. One charged decay, two neutral decays, and one decay candidate of undetermined charge are found. Assuming these events and the remaining dilepton signal result from D meson decays, we obtain τ D + = 2.5 −1.5 +3.5 × 10 −13 s and τ D 0 = 3.5 −1.7 +3.5 × 10 −13 s, using a maximum likelihood analysis.

Abstract: Evidence for a bound ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{33}(1236)\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{33}(1236)$ component of the deuteron is sought by using ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$, ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, and ${K}^{+}$ mesons as probes of nuclear structure. Events are observed which might contain $\ensuremath{\Delta}(1236)$ "spectators" in the breakup of a deuteron in a $\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\Delta}$ state. However, other mechanisms may contribute to the signal, and we cannot unambiguously ascribe our events to a $\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\Delta}$ contribution in the deuteron. With certain assumptions we obtain an upper limit of \ensuremath{\sim}0.7% for the $\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\Delta}$ component of the deuteron.

Abstract: Sixty-two charm events have been observed in an exposure of the SLAC Hybrid Facility to a backward scattered laser beam. Based on 22 neutral and 21 charged decays we have measured the charmed-meson lifetimes to be tau/sub D//sup 0/ = (6.8/sub -1.8//sup +2.3/)= x 10/sup -13/ sec, tau/sub D//sup + -/ = (7.4/sub -2.0//sup +2.3/) x 10/sup -13/ sec and their ratio tau/sub D//sup + -//tau0 = 1.1/sub -0.3/ /sup +0.6/. The inclusive charm cross section at a photon energy of 20 GeV has been measured to be 56/sub -/23/sup +24/ nb. Evidence is presented for a non-DD-bar component to charm production, consistent with (35 +- 20)% ..lambda../sub c//sup +/ production and some D/sup asteriskplus-or-minus/ production. We have found no unambiguous F decays.

Abstract: We have studied inclusive production of ${K}_{S}^{0}$, $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$, and $\overline{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ particles in 20-GeV $\ensuremath{\gamma}p$ interactions and have found features similar to those observed in both hadronic and leptonic interactions. The production cross sections, charged-particle multiplicities, and average $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ polarization are reported. Inclusive distributions of $x$ and ${p}_{T}$ are shown and discussed in terms of quark fragmentation models. Production cross sections for ${K}^{*}(890)$ and ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{*}(1385)$ are also reported.

Abstract: Seventy-one events containing charmed-particle decays have been observed in an experiment using the SLAC Hybrid Facility exposed to a backward-scattered photon beam. Several improvements were made to the apparatus since the previous experiment on charm photoproduction. Results for the charmed-meson lifetimes are consistent with the published results from the previous experiment and the two data samples have been combined yielding a total sample of 136 charm events. After imposing rigorous cuts, 50 neutral, 48 charged, and 2 charged/neutral ambiguous decays remain. From these, the charmed-meson lifetimes are measured to be tau/sub D/ = (8.6 +- 1.3/sub -0.3/ /sup .7/) x 10 T sec, tau/sub D/ = (6.1 +- 0.9 +- 0.3) x 10 T sec, and their ratio tau/sub D/ /tau0 = 1.4 +- 0.3/sub -/ /sub 0.1//sup +0.2/. The total charm cross section at a photon energy of 20 GeV has been measured to be (62 +- 8/sub -/10 V) nb. There is evidence for both DD-barX and D-bar /sub c/ X production with sigma/sub D/ /sub c/ X/sigma/sub charm/ = (71 +- 11 +- 6)%.

Abstract: Results of a search for a predicted enhancement of several microbarns in the charm-photoproduction cross section just above threshold are reported. No charm decays were detected, from which an upper limit to the charm cross section of 94 nb (90% C.L.) at E/sub ..gamma../approx. =10 GeV was obtained. Upper limits in the range 270 to 450 nb were also obtained for the peak cross sections for threshold enhancements in ..gamma..p..-->..D/sup -/..sigma../sub c//sup + +/ and similar channels.

Abstract: Fast forward particles photoproduced in 20-GeV interactions on a hydrogen target are shown to be preferentially positive, the asymmetry increasing with transverse momentum and Feynman x. Evidence is given that this effect is not due to forward-going target fragments. A model in which production from the photon of a forward-going spectator u is preferred over a u-bar, due to a higher probability for interactions of antiquarks with the proton constituents, is shown to be qualitatively consistent with the data.

Abstract: Forty-seven charm events have been observed in an exposure of the SLAC Hybrid Facility bubble chamber to a 20-GeV backward-scattered laser beam. Thirty-seven events survive all the necessary cuts imposed. Based on this number the total charm cross section is calculated to be ${63}_{\ensuremath{-}28}^{+33}$ nb.

Abstract: From a 275 events/μb exposure of the 82″ HBC to the SLAC linearly polarized monochromatic (9.3 GeV) γ beam, our preliminary analysis shows evidence for peripheral [exp (6t)] photoproduction of a JP = 1 −, meson with mass in the 1.5 GeV region, width ≳ 0.4 GeV (M and Γ both model dependent) and σ = 1.7 ± 0.3 μb in the reaction γp ⇒ ρ1 p, ρ1 ⇒ 2π+;2π−. The 4π system shows ρ0π+ π− substructure. Arguments for IG = 1+ are presented from the angular correlations (and the lack of clear evidence for a ρ0ρ0 decay mode).
