The little owl (Athene noctua) is a common raptor in Mediterranean habitats. To acquire more information on its diet, this study identified cranial and post-cranial skeletal material from 70 owl pellets collected during the 2016 and 2017 breeding seasons. The material was used to quantify the little owl’s relative prey abundance using MNI (minimum number of individuals), a taphonomical unit. This study is the first to examine the diet of the little owl in the Peloponnese (southern Greece). After examining 3,691 isolated skeletal and exoskeletal remains from the processed pellets, a total of 78 and 108 prey items were recorded for the two consecutive years. This study, in congruence with previous research, showed that in both years the little owl favoured primarily small mammals and arthropods, with a clear predominance of Thomas’s pine vole (Microtus thomasi) and arthropods from the class Diplopoda. Finally, a redundancy discriminant analysis (RDA) was applied to our two-year results, along with those from similar studies in the Mediterranean region, to examine the relationship between habitat types and prey taxa, which supported the little owl’s opportunistic feeding behaviour, depending on variation of ecological factors.

The Lower Pleistocene Karnezeika locality, lies in the Peloponnese, southern Greece, and its fauna corresponds to the Middle Villafranchian biochronological unit (MN17). The recovered mammal assemblage includes, among others, a few remains of a large Cercopithecid. Herein, we describe this material, including an upper second molar, a partially preserved proximal radius and, possibly, an upper first incisor. The teeth show advanced stages of wear but retain their typical papionin characters, such as a strong lingual cleft and four bilophodont cusps in the molar. The general morphology and wear pattern of the teeth rules out the possibility that the remains belong to the genus Theropithecus, while the general size of the corresponding material excludes the possibility of a Macaca representative as well. On the contrary, the studied material better fits the size range of Paradolichopithecus. Even though this genus is likely represented in the Villafranchian of Europe by a single species, Par. arvernensis, the scarcity of the studied material imposes reservations and thus the Karnezeika papionin is referred at the moment to cf. Paradolichopithecus sp. As in the rest of Europe, the Paradolichopithecus record is rare in Greece, having been found in only two localities, Vatera and Dafnero. Despite its scarcity, the new material from Karnezeika indicates a wide distribution of this important taxon in the Greek peninsula.

The environmental and living conditions of a region are shaped by its relief, geology and climate, and control factors like hydrology and soil formation. While long-term climatic fluctuations and associated changes in environmental conditions are commonly viewed as the dominant natural factor in human evolution, the role of geological and pedological processes has so far received little attention. However, it makes a big difference to consider the effects of large-scale environmental changes in a homogeneous "static" landscape or to include the multitude of dynamic landscape factors that can lead to strong local effects with regard to the structure of the landscape and the availability of water and food.The NE Aegean is a key region of Pleistocene hominin presence at the crossroad between Africa, Asia and Europe situated in a geologically highly unstable region. Rodafnidia, an open-air Lower Paleolithic site on Lesbos, has revealed a unique Acheulean assemblage from excavated fluvio-lacustrine deposits dated between 476 and 164 ka BP. This site and its surrounding region represent a key location to study hominin subsistence and mobility and to investigate potential trans-Aegean migration corridors during Pleistocene sea-level lowstands. Geologically, Rodafnidia is situated on middle Pleistocene fluvial sediments consisting mainly of reworked early Miocene ignimbrites, and Pliocene marly limestones and marls, whereas the wider region is characterized by strong geochemical and pedochemical contrasts including nutritionally depleted soils on ophiolitic rocks, highly productive soils on marshy coastal deposits along the Kalloni Gulf, and a series of fault-controlled thermal sulfur springs at Lisvori and Polichnitos. We hypothesize that the attractiveness of Rodafnidia site for hominin presence was influenced by the local geology and tectonic activity controlling the long-term soil nutritional status of the region. We employ a combined geological-pedological study to unravel the paleoenvironmental conditions of the wider region. Our approach offers, in return, valuable insights into hominin-landscape interaction, relevant to landuse, resource exploitation and dispersal potential.Our systematic sampling and analysis of rocks, soil and water offers clues to the soil nutritional characteristics of the main lithological units exposed in the wider Rodafnidia area. Results reveal distinct differences in the nutritional status of soils developed on different geological substrates. While volcanic soils in the immediate Rodafnidia region and marshy soils along the coast comprise well-balanced nutritional levels, serpentinite soils dominating the ophiolitic highlands display highly problematic properties such as low Ca/Mg ratios and enhanced heavy metal concentrations. Soils on hot spring deposits are puzzling as they display both beneficial characteristics (high soil organic carbon, high calcium) and potentially harmful enhanced heavy metal levels.In a pedological context, Rodafinidia is located in a narrow zone of highly productive, nutrient rich soils in a wider region of geologically induced nutrient deficiencies. During sea-level lowstands, hominins along with other continental fauna could have crossed terrestrial passages between western Asia and the Eastern Aegean, and sites like Rodafnidia emerge as likely beneficial locations for hominin subsistence strategies.

The prehistoric record of Lefkas and the smaller neighboring islands is fairly extensive. The oldest archaeological material dates back to the Middle Palaeolithic period. The Neolithic period is also attested by archaeological finds in five caves. Even though Early (EH) and Middle Helladic (MH) periods have been known since the 1920s due to Dőrpfeld’s excavations, the archaeological data from the Late Bronze Age are scarce. A small Mycenaean tholos tomb has been excavated at Agios Nikitas, while several LH tumuli have been unearthed at the neighboring Meganissi Island.

A riverbed swamp in the Krathis River, N. Peloponnese, is studied and analyzed geomorphologicaly. Our analysis is also based on sedimentological, geochemical, palaeontological and radiometric dating data which enabled the investigation of the possible relationship between the studied swamp and the 1913 Tsivlos landslide. Sedimentological analysis showed that the current sedimentation is dominated by fine grain material and occasional coarse-grained beds. Micropalaeontological analysis indicated that the deeper layers of the core are barren, while the upper ones contain fresh water ostracods suggesting hydrodynamically a progressively more stable environment. In accordance, radiocarbon C14 and 137Cs dating showed a progressively decreasing sedimentation rate over the last fifty years. The results of this study show that the Tsivlos landslide is not the only cause for the formation of the modern swamp. Tectonic movements in the area seem to play a decisive role causing uplift and subsidence in the area near an active fault.

Kefalonia Island is situated in western Greece and geologically corresponds to the Apulian Platform Margins (APM), with the Apulian Platform lying to the west and the Ionian Basin to the east. The studied deposits, with a thickness up to 164.5, extend along the 650 m long Agia Efimia bay, ranging from the Middle Paleocene (Selandian) to the uppermost Eocene (Priabonian), during the latest part of the rift stage. Fieldwork measurements of soft-sediment deformation structures (SSDS), paleocurrent directions, the size and abundance of siliceous concretions (SC) and siliceous beds (SB), and shale horizons were correlated with the age of selected samples, and thus, the relation of the tectonic regime with the depositional conditions was presented. As SSDS could represent an indicator of tectonic activity and instability of the basin floor instability, the size and the abundance of the SSDS whereas used to identify the parameters that produced the basin floor instability like the intensity of tectonic activity. The studied section, with a general NE-SW orientation, was subdivided into five (5) different units. The changes of these units in paleocurrent directions, the size, the abundance, and the thickness of SSDS, SC, and SB and the presence of shale horizons in the upper unit, characterize a gradual change of the depositional conditions in the APM, from the Upper Paleocene (Selandian) to the Upper Eocene (Priabonian). The factor that influenced the abovementioned changes was related with the presence and the activity of normal faults that produced instability of the basin floor. Therefore, a reduction in tectonic activity from the Paleocene to the Eocene is suggested.

Rio graben is a region of significant stratigraphic and palaeontological interest where several environmental changes have been recorded during the Quaternary. These changes are a result of active tectonism, related to the well-known rifting process that has been occurring in the geotectonic region of the Corinth-Patras Rift, as well as of the influence of continuous eustatic and climatic changes. Fossil assemblages from Middle to Upper Pleistocene transitional to marine and terrestrial sedimentary sequences located at Sichaena (Rio Graben) on the west side of Charadros river in NW Peloponnesus, Greece, are analyzed herein in order to distinguish tectonic and eustatic controls. The name of the studied section is Vigla 1 (50 m thickness), belonging to the NE-trending Rio graben, a structure bridging the Corinth graben to the east and the Patras graben to the west. The presence of two normal antithetic second order faults and an unconformity were identified separating the studied stratigraphic section into four distinct sedimentological sequences. The purpose of this work is to determine the palaeoenvironmental conditions of the studied section and to unravel the Middle-Late Pleistocene palaeoenvironmental changes. The micro-fauna evidences oligohaline lagoon sediments at the lower sequence (Sequence 1). Conversely, at the middle (Sequence 2) and at the upper sequence (Sequence 3), the recorded species indicate lagoonal to shallow marine depositional environments. At the top of the section, an unconformity brings into contact Sequence 3 with a sequence consisting a red conglomerate (Sequence 4) that indicates an alluvial fan environment. In order to constrain chronologically the sediments Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating was applied. According to the OSL dating results, an Upper Middle Pleistocene age has been attributed for the studied sequences. Moreover, projecting the dating results to the marine isotope curve, a high degree of consistency can be seen between the OSL ages and MIS 7e, 7c and 6d, where the transition from lagoonal facies to shallow marine alternations in sequence 2 correlates well with the MIS 7c highstand, and sequence 3 with MIS 7e and the MIS 6d low stand. Thus, our results indicate the spatial palaeoenvironmental evolution of the studied area which during the Upper Middle Pleistocene is characterised by intense local tectonic movements in conjunction with eustatic sea level changes.

This work aims to test and introduce a newly developed methodological approach for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions using advanced intelligent controls, namely fuzzy cognitive maps (FCMs). The new methodology is presented to the scientific community through the palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of a Lower Pleistocene sedimentary sequence in the Sousaki Basin (north-eastern Corinth Gulf, Greece). The palaeoenvironmental analysis using FCMs revealed the presence of an unstable lagoonal environment with minor zonation in the study area. Five palaeoenvironmental units were identified, while only four were found using conventional statistical methods. The newly developed approach removes subjectivity from biostratigraphical data and provides automated and more accurate results, as fuzzy theory examines the given data from a more general perspective. It also highlights natural variations existing among evolving environments in species abundance gradients. This work suggests the great potential for creating a new method that could serve as a useful complement to the established statistical methods to exploit more detailed results on the palaeoenvironmental features of past fossil assemblages.

The use of life tables in age-graded mandibles of the endemic pygmy hippopotamus Hippopotamus minor from Aetokremnos Cyprus suggests that death occurred by natural causes such as accidents, genetic abnormalities and endemic diseases rather than catastrophic causes. Comparison of H. minor and modern Hippopotamus amphibius life tables suggests the birth of one offspring per female per year and the occurrence of mating and birth seasons. Hunting by prehistoric humans whose tools were found in proximity with the hippopotamus bones is not justified by the life tables that have been produced. The use of the wet rockshelter of Aetokremnos as a living area during the day, in the same way that extant H. amphibius use lake water, is instead proposed as a probable explanation for the extensive accumulation of bones.

The management of acute gout in the hospital setting may be challenging since most patients are elderly with multiple unstable comorbidities. However, there are no prospective clinical trials for hospitalized patients with gout to guide optimal management. Evidence indicates that steroids or adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) may be effective and safe therapeutic options for these patients. This study aimed at directly comparing the efficacy and safety of ACTH vs betamethasone for the treatment of gout in hospitalized patients. This is the first prospective clinical trial for hospitalized patients with gout. We designed a randomized, open label study to assess the efficacy and safety of a single intramuscular injection of either ACTH or betamethasone in hospitalized patients with acute gout. Primary efficacy endpoints were the change in intensity of pain as recorded using a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) at baseline compared to 24 h (ΔVAS24h), and 48 h. Moreover, we assessed safety and effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, glucose and lipid homeostasis, bone metabolism, electrolytes and renal function. 38 patients were recruited. Both treatments were highly effective. The mean ± SE ΔVAS24h and ΔVAS48h for ACTH was 4.48 ± 0.29 and 5.58 ± 0.26, respectively. The mean ± SE ΔVAS24h and ΔVAS48h for betamethasone was 4.67 ± 0.32 and 5.67 ± 0.28, respectively. Direct comparison between the two groups at 24 h and 48 h did not show statistically significant differences. Both treatments were well tolerated and safe. The effects on all metabolic parameters were mostly minimal and transient for both treatments. However, ACTH may affect less the HPA axis and bone metabolism compared to betamethasone, thus leading to the conclusion that. ACTH and betamethasone are effective and safe for the management of acute gout in hospitalized patients but that ACTH may associate with less disturbance of the HPA axis and bone metabolism. Our data support the use of both drugs as first line treatments for hospitalized patients with gout.Clinical trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04306653.

The studied area is situated in northwestern Greece and corresponds to the northern end of the Pre-Apulian Zone, in contact with the Apulian platform to the west and the Ionian Basin to the east. The proposed model is based on fieldwork, measured deformation structures, and age determination of the studied deposits. Until now, the known Pre-Apulian platform or Pre-Apulian zone represents the margins of the Apulian platform to the Ionian Basin and was formed due to the normal faults’ activity during the Mesozoic to Cenozoic Eras. Soft sediment deformation (SSD) structures are widespread within the upper Paleocene to lower Miocene limestones/marly limestones that are exposed in both Paxoi and Anti-Paxoi Islands, mostly along their eastern coasts, across sections of 2–3 km long and up to 60 m high. SSD structures, with a vertical thickness up to 10 m, have been observed in limestones and were formed during or immediately after deposition, during the first stage of sediment consolidation. SSD structures are cross-cut by normal faults, indicating their development during the rift stage. There are at least five different SSD horizons, and most of them present either an eastward or a westward progradation. These SSD structures are classified into four (4) different types of deformations: (1) thick synclines and anticlines, formed due to strong synsedimentary deformation; (2) strong and thick SSD structures that produced erosional contacts both with the underlying and the overlying undeformed horizons; (3) thin slumps, having sharp contacts with the underlying undeformed horizons and erosional contacts with the overlying undeformed horizons; and (4) thin slump horizons passing laterally to undeformed deposits in the same horizon. The studied SSD structures and their age of development introduce active margins between the Apulian platform and the Ionian Basin that have been influenced by normal fault activity. These normal faults have been active since the Ionian Basin changed gradually to a foreland basin, and after the tectonic regime changed from extension to compression, during the early to middle Eocene. It seems that compression in the studied Apulian platform margins arrived later and after the lower Miocene, and after the development of the SSD structures. The confinement of the lower Miocene deposits, both northwards and southwards (in Anti-Paxoi Island), indicates the presence of active transfer faults, with flower structure geometry, that were formed during sedimentation, producing highs and troughs. The present open anticline geometry of Paxoi Island indicates that the Island represents the forebulge area of the middle Miocene Ionian Foreland due to Ionian Thrust activity.

Giraffids (Mammalia: Cetartiodactyla: Giraffidae) are a common taxon in Neogene and Quaternary faunas of the Old World since the early Miocene until present. The review of the fossil record of this group in Greece revealed the presence of four subfamilies (Canthumerycinae, Sivatheriinae, Palaeotraginae, and Giraffinae) that include 6 genera (Georgiomeryx, Helladotherium, Palaeotragus, Samotherium, Palaeogiraffa, and Bohlinia) with 14 different species (Georgiomeryx georgalasi, Helladotherium duvernoyi, Samotherium boissieri, Samotherium major, Palaeotragus rouenii, Palaeotragus coelophrys, Palaeotragus quadricornis, Palaeotragus aff. berislavicus, Palaeotragus inexspectatus, Palaeogiraffa macedoniae, Palaeogiraffa pamiri, Palaeogiraffa major, Bohlinia attica, and Bohlinia nikitiae) and which have been reported in 56 localities, distributed from the middle Miocene (MN5, Late Orleanian) until the early Pleistocene (MN17–MNQ18, middle Villafranchian). Ten of the above mentioned species were named from type localities in Greece, and all of them are considered as valid species herein. Six localities in Greece present the highest giraffid diversity, with 4 different species, namely Nikiti 1, Q1 Samos, Andrianos ravine Samos, Kerassia 3 & 4, Kerassia 1, and Thermopigi. The peak in taxonomic diversity is noted during the Vallesian (MN10) with 8 different species. The taxon with the widest geographic and temporal distribution is Helladotherium duvernoyi. The giraffid bearing localities are found in the Eastern part of mainland Greece and across the Aegean from Crete to Lesvos.

Siliceous concretions (nodules), from two different geological settings—the Apulian platform margins in Kefalonia island, and the Ionian Basin in Ithaca, Atokos, and Kastos islands—have been studied both in the field and in the laboratory. Nodule cuttings are mainly characterized by the development of a core, around which a ring (rim) has been formed. Mineralogical study, using X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) analysis, showed that the rim is usually richer in moganite than the core. Homogeneous concretions, without discernible inner core and outer ring, were observed generally in both settings. Mineralogical analysis of the selected siliceous concretions from Kefalonia island showed the presence mostly of quartz and moganite, while calcite either was absent or participated in a few samples in minor/trace abundances. Moganite was generally abundant in all the samples from Kefalonia island. Concretions from the Ionian Basin showed a variation in the quartz, moganite, and calcite contents. Mineralogical differences were recognized both between the different studied geodynamic settings and internally in the same setting, but with different stages of development. The above-mentioned differential diagenesis on nodules evolution could be related to the presence and/or abundance of stylolites, later fluid flows, restrictions from one area to another due to synchronous fault activity, and the composition of substances dissolved in fluids. Moreover, the development of concretions produced secondary fractures in the surrounding area of the nodule-bearing rocks.

In order to decipher the paleo-depositional environments, during the Late Jurassic to Early Eocene syn-rift stage, at the margins of the Ionian basin, two different areas with exposed long sequences have been selected, Kastos Island (external margin) and Araxos peninsula (internal margin), and were examined by means of microfacies analysis and biostratigraphy. On Kastos Island, based on lithological and sedimentological features, the following depositional environments have been recognized: an open marine/restricted environment prevailed during the Early Jurassic (“Pantokrator” limestones), changing upwards into deep-sea and slope environments during the Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous (Vigla limestones). The Upper Cretaceous (Senonian limestones) is characterized by a slope environment, whereas during the Paleogene, deep-sea and toe of slope conditions prevailed. In Araxos peninsula, Lower Cretaceous deposits (“Vigla” limestones) were accumulated in a deep-sea environment, Upper Cretaceous ones (Senonian limestones) were deposited in slope or toe of slope conditions. Paleocene limestones correspond to a deep-sea environment. In Araxos peninsula, changes occurred during the Cretaceous, whereas on Kastos Island, they occurred during the Paleocene/Eocene, related to different stages of tectonic activity in the Ionian basin from east to west.

Research regarding renal involvement in SSc has almost exclusively focused on scleroderma renal crisis (SRC). There are relatively limited data regarding renal impairment in SSc beyond SRC. We performed an electronic search using the key words systemic sclerosis or scleroderma combined with each of the following: renal dysfunction, kidney, glomerular filtration rate (GFR), proteinuria and hematuria. The complex interaction of local tectonics and volcanism usually produces palaeoenvironments that require to be studied in detail in order to define the role of each factor in the local palaeoenvironmental evolution. This is the case for the Sousaki Basin lying at the eastern part of the Gulf of Corinth. It presents a complex Pliocene and Pleistocene stratigraphy, affected by deformational processes due to the local tectonic regime. The Sousaki volcano is a low standing volcano that constitutes the western endpoint of the South Aegean Volcanic Arc and may also contribute to the palaeoenvironmental evolution of the basin. The studied section, in the Sousaki Basin, consists of marly and conglomeratic layers with intercalations of organic rich sediments. The base of the section consists of impermeable volcanic products. A micropalaeontological analysis based on 29 samples has been conducted in order to reconstruct the palaeoenvironment after the termination of the activity of the last volcanic period. A diversified fauna has been retrieved, consisting of Gelasian (early Pleistocene) ostracods, gastropods, diatoms, charophyte gyrogonites, thecamoebians, fish otoliths and teeth. Count-based statistical treatments performed on ostracod species revealed that a volcano-tectonic lake evolved after the emplacement of the volcanic products in the basin. Afterwards, a braided river environment dominated the landscape. Due to the lateral migration of the riverbed, several laterally evolving sub-environments were established, ranging from marginal lakes to marshes. Ultimately, the palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of the study area revealed the formation, evolution and demise of a tectonically controlled volcanic lake.

Sedimentological studies of the Upper Cretaceous–lower Eocene limestones in the western part of the Ionian basin (Araxos area) indicate that these deposits are composed of calciturbidites interbedded with breccia-microbreccia. Breccia - microbreccia deposits are structureless, display channelized geometry with calciturbiditic blocks internally to the channels. Most of the clasts were sourced from the underlying Lower Cretaceous “Vigla limestones”. Calciturbidites include Ta to Te Bouma sub-divisions, and are organized in cycles that form channelized deposits with a high degree of amalgamation. Statistical analysis confirms the presence of order in the sub-division sequence. The thickness of event beds in the studied section shows a lognormal statistical distribution, typical of turbidite successions. Limestone microfacies suggest deep-water deposits and reworked shelf deposits. The intense extensional tectonic activity in the Ionian basin during the Early Cretaceous, with synthetic and antithetic faults, produced active platform margins and asymmetrical grabens. In this regime, large amounts of coarse-grained material became available and accumulated in the basin. High slope gradients led to slumping. During the Late Cretaceous, the uplifted margins of the grabens caused erosion of the pre-existing deposits of the Lower Cretaceous “Vigla Formation”. This event led to the accumulation of channelized microbreccia and breccia units and transport of platform deposits by turbidity currents. The Early Cretaceous to early Eocene depositional history in the Ionian Basin indicates that the regional tectonic activity, rather than the eustatic sea-level changes, was the major factor that influenced the basin evolution, suggesting a syn-rift stage being active from the Jurassic to the early Eocene.

The genus Cyprideis is one of the most widespread ostracod representative of the Pleistocene brackish palaeoenvironments. Especially Cyprideis torosa is often found in great numbers and even in monospecific taphocoenoses and for this reason its study is very useful for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions. The identification of different species of Cyprideis is often complicated and needs careful morphology inspection. This becomes even more difficult in the case of endemic species which present significant similarities with each other. In this work, we have studied and analyzed several Cyprideis species (C.torosa, C. frydaci, C.dictyoti, C. pannonica, C. elisabeta, C. seminulum, C. heterostigma) deriving from brackish palaeoenvironments of a Lower Pleistocene marl sequence in Sousaki Basin (Northeastern Corinth Graben, Greece). More specifically size measurements and geometric morphometrics (lateral valve outline of both right and left valves as well as females and males) were used in order to attest the similarities and dissimilarities between the different species and draw conclusions about their origin. According to the valve outline and the multivariate analysis a close relationship between the valve shape of all Cyprideis species can be noticed. C. torosa is commonly grouped with C. pannonica except in the male right valve where the two species show some differences. The endemic species C. frydaci and C. dictyoti can be identified by the differences in the right valve of the male and female respectively. The other species could not be substantially differentiated using just the outline analysis which possibly denotes their common genetic origin. The valve outline has proved to be a very useful character for recognizing the different species especially when the two valves of both females and males are considered. More analyses of representative species of Miocene and Pliocene Cyprideis are needed in order to establish their phylogenetic relationships and draw conclusions about their common ancestor.
