14. A qualitative study exploring how gay men manage growing older

Abstract

This study explored how gay men have psychologically managed the process of growing older successfully. Eighteen gay men, aged between 60 and 77, who identified themselves as ageing successfully, were interviewed individually. The interviews were semi-structured and addressed how they had psychologically managed the ageing process. In addition, five heterosexual men were interviewed in order to offer a comparison with the material collected from the homosexual group. All interviews were conducted and analysed using a grounded theory approach. Analysis identified three core categories reflecting the psychological ageing process of gay men: 'enemy alien identity'; 'swimming/coping strategies'; and 'belongings and exclusions'. The findings are then discussed in relation to research on: ageing and identity; theories of normal and successful ageing; and gay ageing. Finally, implications are considered for older gay men in elderly care services, and for psychological services for this, and future, generations of gay men.

Abstract

This is a study of illegitimacy in a rural industrial district in which the phenomenon became extremely common during the early nineteenth century, subsequently declining sharply in frequency from around the 1840s to levels reminiscent of the preceding century. In the normal course of events a thesis within the field of socio-economic history will often evolve from the author having first selected a subject, then an approach to its study, and finally a location for implementing or testing his model. However in the present case the subject matter was virtually thrust at the author by his chance acquaintanceship with Culcheth's poor law papers the bulk of which, having been discovered in an attic, passed into his custody in 1965 to be dried out and sorted. The surprising volume of bastardy papers and account books led to a perusal of the parish registers and to the discovery of an illegitimacy ratio sometimes exceeding 30% of registered births. This was sufficiently odd to warrant further investigation, although four years elapsed before the author was in a position to embark on the task ... [see pdf file for full abstract].

Abstract

This pilot study assesses the suitability of three electronic instruments for the potential to objectively and consistently measure the effectiveness of adaptive seating for children with neuromotor disorders such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy.A MiniMicroactigraph, an XSens accelerometer and an Xsensor pressure mapping system were assessed for their ability to measure change in five participants' stability, movement and posture when seating in a flat CAPS II chair and a contoured CAPS II chair.The accelerometer and pressure mapping system showed a difference in amount of movement and body/seat interface between two contrasting seated surfaces on all children, demonstrating potential for use in future research. The results of the actigraph were inconclusive, but did highlight the importance of instrument placement for future studies that utilise this technology.The three instruments have potential suitability for use in future, more comprehensive studies of adaptive seating. It is recommended that future studies explore the additional features of these instruments for their potential to provide objective data regarding the effects of adaptive seating on children's postural alignment and support, pressure management, stability, functional ability and comfort.
