Functional traits, which shift as a plant develops from seed to adult and may be phylogenetically conserved, are widely acknowledged to be associated with exotic species invasion. However, existing studies comparing functional traits between native and invasive species often focus on a single ontogenetic stage, yielding mixed results. It remains unclear whether the functional trait differences and their relationship with invasiveness (e.g. range size) of exotic species remain consistent across ontogenetic stages.In this study, we experimentally compared 18 traits across the seed, early growth and adult stages of 127 native and exotic species from 19 families. These species are common and often co‐occur in the subtropical region of China. We also explored the linkage between these traits, alongside their phylogenetic relatedness with native species and exotic species' range size in China.Our results show that only seed mass differed between native and exotic species. Moreover, the compositions of traits across all stages and the entire lifespan were primarily influenced by phylogenetic relatedness rather than geographic origin. Further, the range size of exotic species in China positively correlated with their mean phylogenetic distance to native species, with no association with individual functional traits or functional distinctiveness.Synthesis. Our results emphasize the importance of comparing functional traits across ontogenetic stages between native and exotic species to improve our understanding of the role of functional traits in shaping plant invasion. This study focusses on the spectroscopic observation of marbles, rubies and the transition zone between ruby and its hosted marble that may distinguish the origin of ruby. Samples of ruby-bearing marble were obtained from Afghanistan, Myanmar, and Pakistan. Energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence was used to analyze the chemical compositions. Although the content of other elements in the marble varied with the origin, the Cl content was quite constant. A diagram of the trace elements Fe and Ga was used to determine the origins of the marble-hosted rubies. X-ray diffraction was used to verify the structure phases, where trioctahedral mica, plagioclase, quartz, and alkali feldspar were found in marbles. Ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry was used for rubies, where a 659 nm fluoresce peak was found in the Myanmar ruby sample, which could make Myanmar ruby redder and more sought after. The bonding of elements and inclusions of the samples were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and photoluminescence. A FTIR peak at 630 cm−1 is found to be useful in judging the temperature of ruby formation. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used to analyze the variation of the transition zone, which revealed that the boundary was a gradation zone. We used phylogeographic analysis of over 2 kb of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I and II sequence data from 403 field‐collected specimens from both native and introduced populations to investigate the geographic origins of invasive L. huidobrensis worldwide. Within South America, there was substantial genetic variation, as well as the strong phylogeographic structure typical of a native range. In contrast, leafminers from the introduced range and Central America all contained little genetic variation and shared the same small set of haplotypes. These haplotypes trace to Peru as the ultimate geographic origin of invasive populations. Central America is rejected as part of the original geographic range of L. huidobrensis. Within Peru, the primary export region of Lima shared an extremely similar pattern of reduced haplotype variation to the invasive populations. An additional 18 specimens collected at US ports of entry did not share the same haplotype profile as contemporary invasive populations, raising perplexing questions on global pathways and establishment success in this species. Honey's chemical and sensory characteristics depend on several factors, including its botanical and geographic origins. The consumers' increasing interest in monofloral honey and honey with a clear indication of geographic origin make these types of honey susceptible to fraud. The aim was to propose an original chemometric approach for honey's botanical and geographic authentication purposes. The volatile fraction of almost 100 Italian honey samples (4 out of which are from Greece) from different regions and botanical origins was characterized using HS-SPME-GC-MS; the obtained data were combined for the first time with a genetic algorithm to provide a model for the simultaneous authentication of the botanical and geographic origins of the honey samples. A total of 212 volatile compounds were tentatively identified; strawberry tree honeys were those with the greatest total content (i.e., 4829.2 ng/g). A greater variability in the VOCs' content was pointed out for botanical than for geographic origin. The genetic algorithm obtained a 100% correct classification for acacia and eucalyptus honeys, while worst results were achieved for honeydew (75%) and wildflower (60%) honeys; concerning geographic authentication, the best results were for Tuscany (92.7%). The original combination of HS-SPME-GC-MS analysis and a genetic algorithm is therefore proposed as a promising tool for honey authentication purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Genetic, geographic, and climatic factors shape the physicochemical and biochemical properties of coffee (Coffea arabica), which in turn shape its sensory complexity. While research has explored these influences individually, the combined impact on sensory quality remains unclear. This study examines the relationships between coffee growing geographic and climatic conditions, physicochemical properties, biochemical composition, volatile compounds, and sensory attributes in green Arabica beans. Beans from diverse Ethiopian coffee-growing origins were analyzed for their physicochemical characteristics by using official methods in dry matter basis: HPLC for biochemical composition, HS-SPME-GC-MS for volatile compounds, and sensory evaluation by expert cuppers. Results revealed significant variability in key characteristics, including hundred-bean weight (14.53–17.28 g), moisture content (8.5 %–11.87 %), crude fat (10.39 %–16.83 %), pH (4.3–5.41), and titratable acidity (1.93–3.02 mL of NaOH per gram). Biochemical composition also varied, with caffeine (0.88–1.07 g/100 g), chlorogenic acid (3.7–8.2 g/100 g), trigonelline (0.48–2.31 g/100 g), and sucrose (5.8–15.7 g/100 g) differing across regions. Significant correlations emerged between the geographic and climatic conditions, bean properties, and volatile compounds, contributing to sensory notes such as citrus, fruity, floral, mocha, and spicy. Multi-factor analysis explained 60 % of variability, underscoring the impact of geographic and climatic factors on the beans' physicochemical, biochemical, and sensory properties. By linking these variables to coffee quality, this study highlights their role in enhancing traceability, authenticating origin, and preserving the unique qualities of green Arabica beans across regions.

Scientific development provides opportunities to replace many traditional manual methods to achieve more accurate results and higher efficiency. To scientifically ascertain the geographical origin of coffee, this study develops a method for the rapid determination of 16 inorganic elements in coffee using microwave digestion combined with the ICP-MS internal standard method. Principal component analysis (PCA), Fisher discriminant analysis (FDA), and Partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) are employed to analyze 40 coffee samples from three production areas of Pu'er, Baoshan, and Wanning. The results show that the linear correlation coefficients of the 16 elements in this method are above 0.999, the detection limits are in the range of 0.0004–0.63 mg/kg, the RSD of the precision experiments are 4.5 %–13.5 %, the recovery rate of the peak experiment is 86.0 %–96.3 % with the RSD of 1.1 %–8.8 %, and the results of the standard substances are within the range of standard values. Using the discriminant analysis of inorganic elements in coffee (FDA and PLS-DA), coffee origin discrimination was realized, and six key elements (Al, Mn, Fe, Cu, Na, and Ba) are identified as effective discriminatory indexes. Accordingly, a coffee origin discrimination model is established, and the overall accuracy discrimination rate of the discrimination model are all more than 90.0 %, and FDA > PLS-DA. The findings indicated that the method has good accuracy and reliability, is suitable for analyzing and determining multiple elements in sample components as targets, and may have a positive impact on the development of related industries.

A method was developed to identify and trace the geographic sources of Erigeron breviscapus using high-resolution mass spectrometry and chemometrics. The representative samples were collected from the geographic area of Honghe Dengzhanhua and other areas in Yunnan province and Guizhou province. The data points could be determined well using the PCA and PLS-DA diagram. A total of 46 characteristic compounds were identified from Honghe Dengzhanhua and within Guizhou province, but 37 compounds were different from Honghe Dengzhanhua and other counties in Yunnan province. Two biomarkers were found from three regions. Their structures were inferred as 8-amino-7-oxononanoic acid and 8-hydroxyquinoline, and they had the same molecular composition. Despite the availability of a vaccine against hepatitis B virus (HBV), this infection still causes public health problems, particularly in susceptible populations. In Portugal, universal free vaccination started in 1994, and most HBV infections are diagnosed in immigrants from high-prevalence countries. Our aim was to assess the pattern of HBV genotypes/subgenotypes in samples collected between 2017 and 2021 from a convenience sample of 70 infected residents in Portugal. The HBV pol/HBsAg region was amplified and sequenced, allowing the analysis of RT sequences submitted to phylogenetic analysis and mutations assessment. A total of 37.1% of samples were from native Portuguese, aged 25–53 years (mean: 36.7 years), and the remaining samples were from individuals born outside of Portugal. A high diversity of HBV was identified: subgenotypes A1–A3 in 41.0% (16/39); D1, D3, and D4 in 30.7% (12/39); E in 23.1% (9/39); and F4 in 2.6% (1/39). Besides genotypes A and D, Portuguese were also infected with genotypes E and F, which are prevalent in Africa and South America, respectively. Resistance mutations in RT sequences were not found. The findings provide valuable insights for updating the HBV molecular epidemiology in Portugal. However, successful strategies to prevent and control the infection are still needed in the country, especially among susceptible and vulnerable populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Global warming has raised concerns regarding the potential impact on aquatic biosafety and health. To illuminate the adaptive mechanisms of bdelloid rotifers in response to global warming, the ecological and transcriptomic characteristics of two strains (HX and ZJ) of Rotaria rotatoria were investigated at 25°C and 35°C. Our results showed an obvious genetic divergence between the two geographic populations. Thermal stress significantly reduced the average lifespan of R. rotatoria in both strains, but increased the offspring production in the ZJ strain. Furthermore, the expression levels of genes Hsp70 were significantly upregulated in the HX strain, while GSTo1 and Cu/Zn‐SOD were on the contrary. In the ZJ strain, the expression levels of genes Hsp70, CAT2, and GSTo1 were upregulated under thermal stress. Conversely, a significant decrease in the expression level of the Mn‐SOD gene was observed in the ZJ strain under thermal stress. Transcriptomic profiling analysis revealed a total of 105 and 5288 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the HX and ZJ strains under thermal stress, respectively. The PCA results showed clear differences in gene expression pattern between HX and ZJ strains under thermal stress. Interestingly, compared to the HX strain, numerous downregulated DEGs in the ZJ strain were enriched into pathways related to metabolism under thermal stress, suggesting that rotifers from the ZJ strain prioritize resource allocation to reproduction by suppressing costly metabolic processes. This finding is consistent with the life table results. This study provides new insights into the adaptive evolution of aquatic animals in the context of global climate change. Aging in oak barrels is widely used in enology which could bring flavor changes and aromatic complexity to wines. In the present study, the aroma compounds were analyzed from the ‘Merlot’ dry red wines, which were fermented in two types of fermenters (stainless steel tank and rotated oak barrel) and aged in six types of oak barrels (three geographic origins × two toasting degrees) for different time (0, 3, 6 and 9 months, respectively). Results showed that 30 volatiles were associated with barrels and increased during oak aging. The fermenters could influence the intensities of the toast, leathery, smoky, fruity, floral and caramel aromas. The concentration of whisky lactone, eugenol, cis-isoeugenol, and the intensities of the toast and spicy aromas were highest in the wines aged in American oak and were lowest in the wines aged in French oak barrels. The concentrations of guaiacol, syringol, trans-isoeugenol, furfural alcohol, vanilla, cis-whisky lactone enabled the medium toasting barrels to be distinguished from the light toasting ones. The compounds originating from the barrels could be used to distinguish the types of different barrels, but the other general grape-derived and fermentation-derived volatiles could not. The fermenters, oak species and toasting degrees of the barrels all had significant effects on the aroma profiles of the aged ‘Merlot’ dry red wines, but the influence of the geographic origin was not obvious.

Colletotrichum coccodes (Wallr.) Hughes is an asexual fungus with five vegetative compatibility groups. It was postulated that C. coccodes was isolated at the center of origin of potato at one time, and due to the movement of potato around the globe, the fungus was established on each continent but became bottlenecked and genetically unable to form stable heterokaryons via vegetative compatibility grouping (VCG) studies. The objectives of this study were (i) to determine if the VCGs around the world are related to the VCGs in Chile, (ii) to determine the diversity of C. coccodes populations in Chile, and (iii) to find any evidence for a cryptic sexual life cycle for this fungus. Worldwide C. coccodes populations have been found to be genetically correlated and belong to one or more C. coccodes-identified VCGs. The most distributed VCG in Chile was VCG2, which is the most common VCG in North America. We hypothesize that one or more VCGs had spread from Chile to the rest of the world. Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) prevalence in Portugal is low and mainly affects immigrants from endemic areas where human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection represents a public health problem. Despite the majority of HTLV-1-infected individuals remains asymptomatic, severe pathologies may develop after prolonged viral persistence, namely an aggressive form of leukemia. An increased mortality rate and faster progression to death is often related to HTLV-1/HIV coinfection. Nevertheless, studies showed that some antiretrovirals used in HIV treatment lead to a positive immune response against HTLV-1. This study aimed to analyze epidemiological and clinical data, and to assess the diversity of HTLV-1 strains circulating in infected residents diagnosed in the Portuguese national reference laboratory between 2010 and 2021. Long terminal repeat and env proviral sequences derived from 20 individuals were used to generate phylogenetic trees along with multiples reference sequences from different geographic origins retrieved from the database. Three samples belong to Portuguese natives and 17 belong to immigrants: 15 from several countries of Africa, 1 from South America, and 1 from Europe; 6 patients (30%, mean age 40.3 years) showed HTLV-1-related diseases, and 6 (30%, mean age 45.2 years) were coinfected with HIV/AIDS. The results show that the Cosmopolitan subtype is circulating in Portugal, with 10 sequences being classified as subgroup A, that include Portuguese and natives from S. Tomé and Príncipe with a mean age of 39.4 years, and 10 sequences that segregated into the Senegal cluster derived from natives born in Guinea-Bissau with a mean age of 43.5 years. A high proportion of HTLV-1-related diseases and HIV/AIDS coinfection was observed. Risk behavior practices and the absence of specific control measures, including diagnostic and treatment, may contribute to a silent dissemination of a broad diversity of HTLV-1 strains and, therefore, the increased rate of progression to debilitating diseases. Salicornia ramosissima, commonly known as glasswort or sea asparagus, is a halophyte plant cultivated for human consumption that is often referred to as a sea vegetable rich in health-promoting n-3 fatty acids (FAs). Yet, the effect of abiotic conditions, such as salinity and temperature, on the FA profile of S. ramosissima remains largely unknown. These factors can potentially shape its nutritional composition and yield unique fatty acid signatures that can reveal its geographical origin. In this context, samples of S. ramosissima were collected from four different locations along the coastline of mainland Portugal and their FAs were profiled through gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The lipid extracts displayed a high content of essential FAs, such as 18:2n-6 and 18:3n-3. In addition to an epoxide fatty acid exclusively identified in samples from the Mondego estuary, the relative abundance of FAs varied between origin sites, revealing that FA profiles can be used as site-specific lipid fingerprints. This study highlights the role of abiotic conditions on the nutritional profile of S. ramosissima and establishes FA profiling as a potential avenue to trace the geographic origin of this halophyte plant. The isotopic signatures of human tissues can provide valuable information on geographic origin for medicolegal investigations involving unidentified persons. It is important to understand the impact of diagenetic processes on isotopic signatures, as alterations could result in incorrect estimation of geographic origin. This study examines alterations in isotope signatures of different tissues of five human body donors studied throughout decomposition at the Forensic Anthropology Research Facility (FARF), San Marcos, TX. Two body donors were buried, two were placed in open pits, and one was first allowed to naturally mummify and then buried. Remains were recovered after a period of 7–34 months. The preplacement and post-recovery Sr–Pb isotope data of scalp hair, bone (iliac and tibia), and tooth enamel and dentine were compared. The hair samples record significant shifts in Sr-Pb isotope compositions, with hair keratin Pb isotope composition shifting towards the Pb signature of local soil samples. Hair keratin Sr isotope compositions were altered by the burial environment and possibly also by the lab sample cleaning method. The spongy iliac bone samples show inconsistencies in the recoverability of the preplacement Sr–Pb isotope signatures. The post-placement signatures of the buried donors show slight elevation over preplacement signatures. The post-placement signatures of donors placed in open pits are significantly elevated. The tibia and dental samples record the most consistent isotopic data with the least alteration. These more densely mineralised elements show good recoverability of the preplacement isotope signatures in burials and open pits and are thus deemed better targets for forensic investigative purposes. Toona sinensis (A. Juss.) Roem, a multipurpose economic tree, is widely cultivated across Asia, but its high-yielding mature leaves are largely overlooked. This study systematically analysed the flavonols in the mature leaves of T. sinensis from 44 different geographic locations across China, using HPLC-DAD and HPLC-ESI-MS2 techniques. The extreme weather that humanity has been confronting in recent years is the result of climate change. All over the world, unknown plant species are disappearing daily, which humankind has not discovered and will never know. Since 1900, the angiosperms and gymnosperms have been disappearing at a frequency of three species per year, but it is worrying that this rate of disappearance is up to 500 times higher currently. These data, correlated with the information provided by the United Nations (the world population will reach 10 billion by the year 2050) and FAO (food insecurity and the decrease of feedstock) lead to a crucial need to conserve and study plant germplasm. Therefore, plant germplasm conserved, especially in gene banks, can represent an important source for the development of varieties with an increased resistance to abiotic stress factors. Considering the origin of the current species of Phaseolus vulgaris L. as being in two distinct centers with different gene pools (Andean and Mesoamerica), the aim of the article is to infer the ancestry of 27 landraces according to their sampling geographical origin and morphological and molecular traits based on DNA sequences of three genes associated with abiotic stress tolerance (drought and thermal stress): PvREB5A, PvDREB6B, and PvRPS4. Phaseolus vulgaris L. has two different centers of origin: the Mesoamerican and the Andean basins. In this research, 27 landraces were evaluated from different counties in Romania. Three genes, PvREB5A, PvDREB6B, and PvRPS4, were amplified by the PCR reaction, sequenced by the Sanger technique, and the data obtained were analyzed using MEGA XI software. For morphological data, the GraphPad Prism 9 software was used. According to PvDREB5A, 81.5% of all studied landraces belong to the Mesoamerican gene pool and 18.5% belong to the Andean. PvDREB6B revealed a high nucleotide and amino acid diversity between the Andean and Mesoamerican genotypes compared to the other evaluated genes. Also, the PvRPS4 gene from the chloroplast genome showed one SNP within its coding region, different for those two gene pools, which is directly involved in a nonsynonymous substitution. The morphological characteristics, such as weight for 100 seeds, length, height, width, weight, seed flatness, flatness index, seed elongation, and eccentricity index were determined. European landraces of Mesoamerican origin indicated a large seed size compared to Andean genotypes. This study aims to examine the influence of geographic origin and gender on photo-taking and photo-sharing behaviours. An online survey was circulated in four geographical areas: Australia, Canada, India, and Malaysia. The survey questions asked respondents' preferred types of photographic device, photo-content, photo-taking motivation, and photo-sharing behaviours while on holiday. Data were analysed using crosstabulation with Chi-square, controlling for gender, and reporting strength of association with Cramer's V. Results show geographic origin and gender are significant indicators of tourists' photo-taking and photo-sharing behaviour. The number one preference for male/female respondents from India and Malaysia is taking photos of family, which are shared on social media. While nearly a third of male respondents from Australia and Canada do not share holiday photos on social media. Knowledge of this type may assist tourism marketers and destination marketing organisations (DMOs) to personalise their tourism offerings according to geographic region and gender. A method was developed to identify and trace the geographic sources of Erigeron breviscapus using high-resolution mass spectrometry and chemometrics. The representative samples were collected from the geographic area of Honghe Dengzhanhua and other areas in Yunnan province and Guizhou province. The data points could be determined well using the PCA and PLS-DA diagram. A total of 46 characteristic compounds were identified from Honghe Dengzhanhua and within Guizhou province, but 37 compounds were different from Honghe Dengzhanhua and other counties in Yunnan province. Two biomarkers were found from three regions. Their structures were inferred as 8-amino-7-oxononanoic acid and 8-hydroxyquinoline, and they had the same molecular composition. This may suggest that a possible synthesis pathway can be proven in the future.

Despite the availability of a vaccine against hepatitis B virus (HBV), this infection still causes public health problems, particularly in susceptible populations. In Portugal, universal free vaccination started in 1994, and most HBV infections are diagnosed in immigrants from high-prevalence countries. Our aim was to assess the pattern of HBV genotypes/subgenotypes in samples collected between 2017 and 2021 from a convenience sample of 70 infected residents in Portugal. The HBV pol/HBsAg region was amplified and sequenced, allowing the analysis of RT sequences submitted to phylogenetic analysis and mutations assessment. A total of 37.1% of samples were from native Portuguese, aged 25–53 years (mean: 36.7 years), and the remaining samples were from individuals born outside of Portugal. A high diversity of HBV was identified: subgenotypes A1–A3 in 41.0% (16/39); D1, D3, and D4 in 30.7% (12/39); E in 23.1% (9/39); and F4 in 2.6% (1/39). Besides genotypes A and D, Portuguese were also infected with genotypes E and F, which are prevalent in Africa and South America, respectively. Resistance mutations in RT sequences were not found. The findings provide valuable insights for updating the HBV molecular epidemiology in Portugal. However, successful strategies to prevent and control the infection are still needed in the country, especially among susceptible and vulnerable populations.

Background: Numerous bioassay methods have been used to test the efficacy of repellents for ticks, but the comparability of results across different methods has only been evaluated in a single study. Of particular interest are comparisons between bioassays that use artificial containers (in vitro) with those conducted on a human subject (in vivo) for efficacy testing of new potential unregistered active ingredients, which most commonly use in vitro methods. Methods: We compared four different bioassay methods and evaluated three ingredients (DEET [N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide], peppermint oil and rosemary oil) and a negative control (ethanol) over a 6-h period. Two of the methods tested were in vivo bioassay methods in which the active ingredient was applied to human skin (finger and forearm bioassays), and the other two methods were in vitro methods using artificial containers (jar and petri dish bioassays). All four bioassays were conducted using Ixodesscapularis nymphs. We compared the results using nymphs from two different tick colonies that were derived from I.scapularis collected in the US states of Connecticut and Rhode Island (northern origin) and Oklahoma (southern origin), expecting that ticks of different origin would display differences in host-seeking behavior. Results: The results between bioassay methods did not differ significantly, even when comparing those that provide the stimulus of human skin with those that do not. We also found that tick colony source can impact the outcome of repellency bioassays due to differences in movement speed; behavioral differences were incorporated into the assay screening. DEET effectively repelled nymphs for the full 6-h duration of the study. Peppermint oil showed a similar repellent efficacy to DEET during the first hour, but it decreased sharply afterwards. Rosemary oil did not effectively repel nymphs across any of the time points. Conclusions: The repellency results did not differ significantly between the four bioassay methods tested. The results also highlight the need to consider the geographic origin of ticks used in repellency bioassays in addition to species and life stage. Finally, our results indicate a limited repellent efficacy of the two essential oils tested, which highlights the need for further studies on the duration of repellency for similar botanically derived active ingredients and for evaluation of formulated products. Representative samples of propolis were collected from honeybee colonies established in four geographical regions of Egypt. Propolis ethanol extracts (PEE) were prepared in five concentrations (50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 ppm). The un-fractionated extracts were then used to find out their antimicrobial activities on eleven species of microorganisms. The fungus Aspergillus niger was more resistant to the first three concentrations of propolis ethanol extracts (PEE) of all samples. Yeast, S. cerevisiae was more tolerant to the action of PEE than Candida albicans. Staphylococcus aureus, as a pathogenic bacterium, was found to be more sensitive towards PEE than Actenomyces bovis. The same trend was observed for the two thermophilic bacteria, (Streptococcus thermophilus and Mycobacerium phlei). Sporeforming Bacillus subtilis, Lactobacillus casei, Sarcina spp. and the Gram-negative Escherichia coli, were strongly affected by all PEE. A clear effect of the geographical origin of propolis was distinguished where the efficiency evaluation could be arranged according to its geographical origin as follows; North Delta, South Delta 2, East Delta, South Delta 1 and West Delta, respectively. Abstract Background The evolution of smoking rates according to migrant status has not been examined in France, despite a recent reduction in overall smoking rates. Methods DePICT is a two waves (2016: n = 4356; 2017: n = 4114) nationwide telephone survey, representative of the French adult population. We compared smoking-related behaviors before and after implementation of tobacco-control measures (2017), according to the geographical region of birth. Results Compared to 2016, individuals originating from Africa or the Middle East had a slightly higher smoking prevalence in 2017 (34.7% vs 31.3%), despite a higher intention to quit or attempt in the preceding year (adjusted OR(ORa) = 2.72[1.90; 3.90]) compared to non-immigrants. They were also less likely to experience an unsuccessful quit attempt (ORa = 1.76[1.18; 2.62]). Conclusion Tobacco-control measures could have widened smoking inequalities related to migrant status. The evolution of smoking-related behaviors among immigrants should be examined when studying the long-term effects of such policies.

Societal Impact Statement Sandalwood and other high value tree species are under significant threat from illegal harvest. Illegal logging is an increasing problem contributing to deforestation, biodiversity loss, human rights abuses and funding transnational crime. Successful prosecution of illegal logging is hindered by a lack of methods to provide evidence of the origin of timber. New analytical techniques have been developed to trace timber back to its source. These methods, together with the establishment of sustainable sources of forest resources, can help protect vulnerable species by providing evidence to prosecute illegal harvest and ensure that commercially available forest products come from sustainable sources. Summary Sandalwood is highly valued for its fragrant oil and has a long history of cultural and economic importance in many regions of the world. Historical overharvest and poor management have depleted natural populations of sandalwood, which are slow to regenerate. The increasing establishment of plantation sandalwood creates an alternative resource for the sandalwood industry while potentially relieving harvesting pressure on natural stands. Due to the high demand for sandalwood, remaining wild populations are still under threat from illegal logging and methods to identify the source of harvested sandalwood are needed. Laws and regulations aimed at preventing illegal harvest and possession of sandalwood have been put in place but cannot be enforced without the forensic tools to independently verify claimed origin or product quality. The high value of sandalwood combined with the difficulties in enforcing illegal logging laws makes these species particularly vulnerable to poaching. There is an immediate need to develop tools that can identify illegally sourced and adulterated sandalwood products. This paper reviews the current and developing scientific tools that can help identify and control illegal activity in sandalwood supply chains and provides recommendations for future research. Topics include isotope and DNA analysis for tracing illegally harvested sandalwood, chemical profiling for quality control of sandalwood oils, network and policy development to establish a framework for future regulation of the sandalwood trade.

Semiliquidambar cathayensis is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine owing its high concentrations of polyphenol, triterpenoidic acid, and flavonoids. This study aimed to explore the impact of geographical origin and tissue type on the contents of chemical compounds of S. cathayensis, as determined by colorimetric and chromato-graphic methods. Therefore, we quantitively evaluated chemical compounds found in the tissues of various organs of plants collected in six different regions. Overall, we found that geographical origin affected the content of medicinal compounds in S. cathayensis leaves, with plants from Jingzhou county showing the best therapeutic potential. However, no specific correlation was observed with latitude. It is noteworthy that the amount of paeoniflorin and other compounds can be used as biomarkers of geographical origin and tissue type. Most medicinal compounds accumulated mainly in the leaves, whereas ursolic and oleanolic acids accumulated in the roots. These results show that the comprehensive medicinal value of the leaves of S. cathayensis in Jingzhou county is the highest, but the root should be selected first to collect oleanolic acid and ursolic acid. The paper analyzes the community of the Lithuanian province of the Society of Jesus between 1608 and 1773. It adopts a prosopographical approach based on the full set of the order's personnel catalogs for the Lithuanian and Masovian provinces, which have been analyzed by means of RStudio, an integrated development environment based on the R programming language. The author focuses on the total number of Jesuits in the province, their religious or secular status, final vows, education, regional distribution, and geographic origin. In the long term, changes mainly depended on local factors such as the cultural assimilation of the inhabitants of the eastern territories marked by the influence of the Orthodox Church. In the short term, wars and epidemics also played an important role. However, some of the trends in the Lithuanian province, such as the number of professed of the four vows, which increased due to the larger availability of theological courses during religious formation, were similar to those in other administrative units of the Society. Overall, the article demonstrates that the seventeenth-century crises had a profound impact on the Jesuit community both in terms of numbers and internal structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Colletotrichum coccodes (Wallr.) Hughes is an asexual fungus with five vegetative compatibility groups. It was postulated that C. coccodes was isolated at the center of origin of potato at one time, and due to the movement of potato around the globe, the fungus was established on each continent but became bottlenecked and genetically unable to form stable heterokaryons via vegetative compatibility grouping (VCG) studies. The objectives of this study were (i) to determine if the VCGs around the world are related to the VCGs in Chile, (ii) to determine the diversity of C. coccodes populations in Chile, and (iii) to find any evidence for a cryptic sexual life cycle for this fungus. Worldwide C. coccodes populations have been found to be genetically correlated and belong to one or more C. coccodes-identified VCGs. The most distributed VCG in Chile was VCG2, which is the most common VCG in North America. We hypothesize that one or more VCGs had spread from Chile to the rest of the world. Precautions and further studies should be investigated by using other molecular markers and gene sequencing.

Salicornia ramosissima, commonly known as glasswort or sea asparagus, is a halophyte plant cultivated for human consumption that is often referred to as a sea vegetable rich in health-promoting n-3 fatty acids (FAs). Yet, the effect of abiotic conditions, such as salinity and temperature, on the FA profile of S. ramosissima remains largely unknown. These factors can potentially shape its nutritional composition and yield unique fatty acid signatures that can reveal its geographical origin. In this context, samples of S. ramosissima were collected from four different locations along the coastline of mainland Portugal and their FAs were profiled through gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The lipid extracts displayed a high content of essential FAs, such as 18:2n-6 and 18:3n-3. In addition to an epoxide fatty acid exclusively identified in samples from the Mondego estuary, the relative abundance of FAs varied between origin sites, revealing that FA profiles can be used as site-specific lipid fingerprints. This study highlights the role of abiotic conditions on the nutritional profile of S. ramosissima and establishes FA profiling as a potential avenue to trace the geographic origin of this halophyte plant. Overall, the present approach can make origin certification possible, safeguard quality, and enhance consumers’ trust in novel foods.

The remarkable biological activities of oregano essential oils (EOs) have recently prompted a host of studies aimed at exploring their potential innovative applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries. The chemical composition and biological activities of EOs from two Origanum vulgare genotypes, widely cultivated in Sicily and not previously studied for their biological properties, were characterized. Plants of the two genotypes, belonging to the carvacrol (CAR) and thymol (THY) chemotypes and grown in different cultivation environments, were considered for this study. The chemical profiles, including the determination of enantiomeric distribution, of the EOs, obtained by hydrodistillation from dried leaves and flowers, were investigated by GC–MS. Biological activity was evaluated as antimicrobial properties against different pathogen indicator strains, while intestinal barrier integrity, reduction in pathogen adhesion and anti-inflammatory actions were assayed in the intestinal Caco-2 cell line. The chemical profile of the CAR genotype was less complex and characterized by higher levels of the most active compound, i.e., carvacrol, when compared to the THY genotype. The enantiomeric distribution of chiral constituents did not vary across genotypes, while being markedly different from that observed in Origanum vulgare genotypes from other geographical origins. In general, all EOs showed high antimicrobial activity, both in vitro and in a food matrix challenge test. Representative EOs from the two genotypes resulted not altering epithelial monolayer sealing only for concentrations lower than 0.02%, were able to reduce the adhesion of selected pathogens, but did not exert relevant anti-inflammatory effects. The rhizome of Atractylodes lancea (RAL) is a well-known Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) that has been applied in clinical settings for thousands of years. In the past two decades, cultivated RAL has gradually replaced wild RAL and become mainstream in clinical practice. The quality of CHM is significantly influenced by its geographical origin. To date, limited studies have compared the composition of cultivated RAL from different geographical origins. As essential oil is the primary active component of RAL, a strategy combining gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and chemical pattern recognition was first applied to compare the essential oil of RAL (RALO) from different regions in China. Total ion chromatography (TIC) revealed that RALO from different origins had a similar composition; however, the relative content of the main compounds varied significantly. In addition, 26 samples obtained from various regions were divided into three categories by hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA). Combined with the geographical location and chemical composition analysis, the producing regions of RAL were classified into three areas. The main compounds of RALO vary depending on the production areas. Furthermore, a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed that there were significant differences in six compounds, including modephene, caryophyllene, γ-elemene, atractylon, hinesol, and atractylodin, between the three areas. Hinesol, atractylon, and β-eudesmol were selected as the potential markers for distinguishing different areas by orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA). In conclusion, by combining GC-MS with chemical pattern recognition analysis, this research has identified the chemical variations across various producing areas and developed an effective method for geographic origin tracking of cultivated RAL based on essential oils. Simple Summary: In the present study, we employed population genetics analysis to investigate possible origins of the introduced Pinctada fucata population in the Mischief Reef of the South China Sea, as well as diversity and structure of the P. fucata populations. Population genomics data clearly revealed a closer genetic relationship between the Mischief Reef introduced population and the Lingshui population, indicating that Lingshui may be the potential geographical origin. Furthermore, several selected genomic regions and genes of the introduced population were identified, some of which may play important roles in the adaptation of temperature and salinity tolerance. Among the anthropogenic stresses that marine ecosystems face, biological invasions are one of the major threats. Recently, as a result of increasingly intense anthropogenic disturbance, numerous marine species have been introduced to their non-native ranges. However, many introduced species have uncertain original sources. This prevents the design and establishment of methods for controlling or preventing these introduced species. In the present study, genomic sequencing and population genetic analysis were performed to detect the geographic origin of the introduced Pinctada fucata population in the Mischief Reef of the South China Sea. The results of population genetic structure analysis showed a close relationship between the Mischief Reef introduced population and the Lingshui population, indicating that Lingshui may be the potential geographical origin. Furthermore, lower heterozygosity and nucleotide diversity were observed in the introduced population in Mischief Reef, indicating lower genetic diversity than in other native populations. We also identified some selected genomic regions and genes of the introduced population, including genes related to temperature and salinity tolerance. These genes may play important roles in the adaptation of the introduced population. Our study will improve our understanding of the invasion history of the P. fucata population. Simple Summary: Several life-history traits of Mediterranean sperm whales are little explored. We present new original data on the relationships between age and body length and age at maturity of individuals stranded along the Italian coast. We found that Mediterranean male sperm whales attain sexual maturity at 10 years and for the same body length class are older than Atlantic ones. Our finding of a Mediterranean pregnant female of only 6.5 m of body length and an assessed age of 24–26 years is particularly noteworthy, as the females of this species reach sexual maturity at about 9 meters total length and 9 years of age in other marine areas. Two different hypotheses can be advanced to explain this difference in size, based on either ecological or genetic factors. The first is based on a lesser energy intake of Mediterranean individuals compared to Atlantic ones, mostly due to a smaller prey size and less trophic conditions. The second hypothesis concerns a low genetic diversity and mating among closely related individuals. Considering its low genetic diversity, the Mediterranean sperm whale population should be the target of focused conservation efforts as it might be relatively less responsive to environmental changes. We investigated the relationship between age and body length, and age at sexual maturity of Physeter macrocephalus individuals stranded along the Italian coast. Our molecular analysis shows that all our samples belong to the C.001.002 haplotype, shared between Atlantic and Mediterranean populations. We show that males attain sexual maturity at 10 years, similar to those from other marine areas. However, considering the same body length class, Mediterranean males are older than Atlantic ones. Our finding of a Mediterranean pregnant female of only 6.5 m in length and an assessed age of 24–26 years is particularly noteworthy, considering that females reach sexual maturity at about 9 years and 9 m of total length in other regions. Comparing our results with the literature data, we highlight the positive correlation between lifespan, adult body length and weight of males from the Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean. Regardless of whether the relatively small size of Mediterranean specimens is a consequence of an inbreeding depression or an adaptation to less favorable trophic conditions, we recommend to closely monitor this population from a conservation perspective. An optimized procedure for extracting and analyzing raw pistachio volatiles was developed through headspace sampling with high-capacity tools and subsequent analysis using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The examination of 18 pistachio samples belonging to different geographic areas led to the identification of a set of 99 volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Molecules were putatively identified using linear retention index, mass spectra similarity, and two-dimensional plot location. The impact of preprocessing and processing techniques on the aligned data matrix from a set of samples of different geographical origins, after removing contaminants, was evaluated. The combination of scaling with log-transformation, normalization with z-score, and data reduction with random forest machine learning algorithm generated a panel of 16 discriminatory VOC molecules. As a proof of concept, raw pistachios' VOC profile was employed for the first time to tentatively classify them based on their geographical origin. The extreme weather that humanity has been confronting in recent years is the result of climate change. All over the world, unknown plant species are disappearing daily, which humankind has not discovered and will never know. Since 1900, the angiosperms and gymnosperms have been disappearing at a frequency of three species per year, but it is worrying that this rate of disappearance is up to 500 times higher currently. These data, correlated with the information provided by the United Nations (the world population will reach 10 billion by the year 2050) and FAO (food insecurity and the decrease of feedstock) lead to a crucial need to conserve and study plant germplasm. Therefore, plant germplasm conserved, especially in gene banks, can represent an important source for the development of varieties with an increased resistance to abiotic stress factors. Considering the origin of the current species of Phaseolus vulgaris L. as being in two distinct centers with different gene pools (Andean and Mesoamerica), the aim of the article is to infer the ancestry of 27 landraces according to their sampling geographical origin and morphological and molecular traits based on DNA sequences of three genes associated with abiotic stress tolerance (drought and thermal stress): PvREB5A, PvDREB6B, and PvRPS4. Phaseolus vulgaris L. has two different centers of origin: the Mesoamerican and the Andean basins. In this research, 27 landraces were evaluated from different counties in Romania. Three genes, PvREB5A, PvDREB6B, and PvRPS4, were amplified by the PCR reaction, sequenced by the Sanger technique, and the data obtained were analyzed using MEGA XI software. For morphological data, the GraphPad Prism 9 software was used. According to PvDREB5A, 81.5% of all studied landraces belong to the Mesoamerican gene pool and 18.5% belong to the Andean. PvDREB6B revealed a high nucleotide and amino acid diversity between the Andean and Mesoamerican genotypes compared to the other evaluated genes. Also, the PvRPS4 gene from the chloroplast genome showed one SNP within its coding region, different for those two gene pools, which is directly involved in a nonsynonymous substitution. The morphological characteristics, such as weight for 100 seeds, length, height, width, weight, seed flatness, flatness index, seed elongation, and eccentricity index were determined. European landraces of Mesoamerican origin indicated a large seed size compared to Andean genotypes. This work can be a foundation for the identification of interesting traits that establish plant adaptation to abiotic stress and conserve landraces of common beans from genetic depletion.

The fungus Schizophyllum commune is a cosmopolitan basidiomycete, which is popular as an edible, medical mushroom. It causes wood rot and often used as a model object in research. In this study, we analyzed thirty-two genomes of S. commune strains from the NCBI database and designed forty-seven unique SSR DNA markers. The detailed analysis revealed the enrichment of the S. commune genome for CG, GC, CTC, GAG, and TCG motifs. Principal components analysis confirmed the effectiveness of novel SSR DNA markers that preserve the initial heterogeneity of populations. The construction of a network between strains showed single one at a maximum similarity of 38%, and increasing the similarity to 55% breaks the linkage between large groups while separating two new groups containing strains of the population Ru and test cultures S. commune. The amplicons' presence was identified as a sufficient sign of relation of the culture to a specific population. Testing the novel SSR markers allowed to establish a clear delimitation of all groups by geographic location and to differentiate the H4-8 (GCA_000143185.1) strain from the USA population. Scientific development provides opportunities to replace many traditional manual methods to achieve more accurate results and higher efficiency. To scientifically ascertain the geographical origin of coffee, this study develops a method for the rapid determination of 16 inorganic elements in coffee using microwave digestion combined with the ICP-MS internal standard method. Principal component analysis (PCA), Fisher discriminant analysis (FDA), and Partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) are employed to analyze 40 coffee samples from three production areas of Pu'er, Baoshan, and Wanning. The results show that the linear correlation coefficients of the 16 elements in this method are above 0.999, the detection limits are in the range of 0.0004-0.63 mg/kg, the RSD of the precision experiments are 4.5 %-13.5 %, the recovery rate of the peak experiment is 86.0 %-96.3 % with the RSD of 1.1 %-8.8 %, and the results of the standard substances are within the range of standard values. Using the discriminant analysis of inorganic elements in coffee (FDA and PLS-DA), coffee origin discrimination was realized, and six key elements (Al, Mn, Fe, Cu, Na, and Ba) are identified as effective discriminatory indexes. Accordingly, a coffee origin discrimination model is established, and the overall accuracy discrimination rate of the discrimination model are all more than 90.0 %, and FDA > PLS-DA. The findings indicated that the method has good accuracy and reliability, is suitable for analyzing and determining multiple elements in sample components as targets, and may have a positive impact on the development of related industries., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest. The geographical origin and the important nutrient contents greatly affect the quality of red raspberry (RRB, Rubus idaeus L.), a popular fruit with various health benefits. In this study, a chemometrics-assisted hyperspectral imaging (HSI) method was developed for predicting the nutrient contents, including pectin polysaccharides (PPS), reducing sugars (RS), total flavonoids (TF) and total phenolics (TP), and identifying the geographical origin of RRB fruits. The results showed that these nutrient contents in RRB fruits had significant differences between regions (P < 0.05) and could be well predicted based on the HSI full or effective wavelengths selected through competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) and variable iterative space shrinkage approach (VISSA). The best prediction results of PPS, RS, TF, and TP contents were achieved with the highest residual predictive deviation (RPD) values of 3.66, 3.95, 2.85, and 4.85, respectively. The RRB fruits from multi-regions in China were effectively distinguished by using the first derivative-partial least squares discriminant analysis (DER-PLSDA) model, with an accuracy of above 97%. Meanwhile, the fruits from three protected geographical indication (PGI) regions were successfully classified by using the orthogonal partial least squares discrimination analysis (OPLSDA) model, with an accuracy of above 98%. The study results indicate that HSI assisted with chemometrics is a promising method for predicting the important nutrient contents and identifying the geographical origin of red raspberry fruits.

We used Double Digest Restriction site associated DNA sequencing (ddRADseq), exome sequencing (exome-seq) and targeted genotyping by sequencing (GBS) to develop new geographically informative nuclear SNP markers in Picea abies. This set of 518 loci consists of 397 loci specifically designed for the geographic differentiation of populations and 121 loci of adaptive markers for drought stress which all were identified from 26 samples in 23 populations distributed over Central Europe. This set of novel markers represents a valuable basis to study the geographic population structure and genetic differentiation of Picea abies in its natural distribution range as well as outside of its native range with a focus on Central Europe. Tooth enamel and dentine samples from 13 individuals buried in the unmarked 'free ground' colonial section of St Mary's Anglican Cemetery in Adelaide were analysed for oxygen and strontium isotopic composition to assist with the determination of their geographic origin. As the life history of these individuals is not well-documented in the historical record, isotopic data provide important information about migration and mobility in a colonial South Australian population. This was supplemented with further analysis of diet from previously published stable isotope data. While the results are somewhat ambiguous, they suggest that of the 13 individuals in this study, one was probably born in Adelaide, eight in Britain/Ireland, three could have been born in either location; one was born elsewhere. Coffee is one of the most widely traded and consumed tropical products on the world due to its aromatic taste and beneficial health effects. With a high market value and commercial importance, coffee is among the top 10 products most at risk of food fraud. Therefore, identifying new candidates for quality and authenticity markers in coffee research is extremely important to protect both coffee consumers and traders. To date, researchers have mainly focused on the effects of volatile compounds on the flavor of coffee. However, a systematic review of volatile and non-volatile compounds regarding coffee monitoring from harvest to consumption has not yet been done. This review conducts a thorough examination and comparative assessment of recent approaches to use volatiles and non-volatiles as potential markers for defective beans, roasted beans, ground, and packaging coffee. This review also provides the basis for understanding the role of volatile and non-volatile compounds as quality indicators in coffee brewing types such as espresso, Turkish coffee, cold brew, herbal, and French press coffee.
