Abstract

International audience; L'article présente une méthodologie pour établir une cartographie d'alarme de corrosion liée aux niveaux de corrosion des armatures de la première couche dans des structures en béton armé (RC). Les données d'inspection par contrôle non destructif (CND) obtenues à partir de campagnes d'inspection sur différentes structures RC sont utilisées pour construire un modèle prédictif basé sur un réseau bayésien (RB). La méthodologie consiste en trois étapes principales : la construction de la base de données à partir des données d'inspection CND, l'apprentissage de la structure du RB et de ses paramètres à partir des données CND, et l'utilisation du RB pour avoir la cartographie des alarmes de corrosion. L'incertitude des mesures sur site est prise en compte dans ce modèle prédictif pour améliorer la précision des probabilités d'alarme de corrosion obtenues. Les paramètres de la structure RB physiquement optimale sont le potentiel de corrosion, le taux de corrosion, la résistivité électrique et l'alarme de corrosion. Les données d'inspection CND d'une face de pile d'un pont sont utilisées comme nouvelles informations pour mettre à jour le RB dans la dernière étape. La méthodologie permet d'estimer la probabilité d'alarme de corrosion lorsque les indicateurs ne sont pas disponibles simultanément (en raison des contraintes de mesures CND sur site). La cartographie obtenue à partir du modèle prédictif RB peut être utilisée comme un outil efficace pour la stratégie de maintenance en indiquant les zones les plus critiques de la structure inspectée vis-à-vis de la corrosion.

22. The effective elastic properties and thermal conductivity of porous fired clay bricks.

Abstract

Due to the environmental protection requirement, fired clay bricks are not only satisfied with mechanical strength but also rising energy utilisation. Based on the analysis of microstructure, it can be found that fired clay bricks are porous composite materials. The research objective of this article is to study the effect of micropores in order to provide a reference to achieve a compromise between mechanical and thermal properties. Firstly, a simplified representative volume element containing solid matrix and pores is presented at a microscale. Next, the homogenisation technology is introduced to build a micro–macro relationship. In this paper, Ponte Castañeda–Willis scheme considering the spatial distribution of micropores is used to predict the effective elastic properties and effective thermal conductivity of fired clay bricks. The results are compared with those by Mori–Tanaka scheme. Walpole's notation is introduced to describe the transversely isotropic elastic tensors. Then, parameter calibration and experimental validation are implemented. Lastly, several conclusions and perspectives are given. Based on our results, porosity, the aspect ratio and the spatial distribution of micropores can affect the elastic and thermal properties, so we can control the macroscopic properties by changing the three factors. 24. Urban form study for wind potential development

Abstract

Wind energy development is helpful for realizing a green city. This work concentrates on the study of estimating urban wind energy with consideration of urban morphology. Fourteen typical urban forms in Beijing city were selected and analyzed with nine relevant urban morphology parameters. Computational fluid dynamics numerical simulations were used to evaluate the wind energy potential of the urban forms. This work demonstrates that urban forms with higher plot ratio and mean aspect ratio usually have higher wind potential density by site area, an important indicator for neighborhood-scale wind potential development. Urban forms with higher average building height would have higher wind potential density by roof area, an important indicator for building-scale wind potential development. To promote wind potential over roofs, a layout of 45° of building configuration with inlet wind direction and building forms with round-angle corners are suggested. Local wind distribution is important for wind energy evaluation of individual buildings and wind energy distribution over different directions; however, it has a substantially lesser effect on the general wind potential comparison among urban forms with different urban characteristics.

Abstract

International audience; Evaporation is a key phenomenon in the natural environment and in many technological systems involving capillary structures. Understanding the evaporation front dynamics enables the evaporation rate from microfluidic devices and porous media to be finely controlled. Of particular interest is the ability to control the position of the front through suitable design of the capillary structure. Here, we show how to design model capillary structures in microfluidic devices so as to control the drying kinetics. This is achieved by acting on the spatial organization of the constrictions that influence the invasion of the structure by the gas phase. Two types of control are demonstrated. The first is intended to control the sequence of primary invasions through the pore space, while the second aims to control the secondary liquid structures: films, bridges, etc., that can form in the region of pore space invaded by the gas phase. It is shown how the latter can be obtained from phyllotaxy-inspired geometry. Our study thus opens up a route toward the control of the evaporation kinetics by means of tailored capillary structures.

Abstract

WOS:000387194400016; International audience; The proportion of anhydrous cement in materials is essential data in relation to reactivity potential, particularly in by-products that may be reused it in concrete techniques. This paper presents a method based on Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) image analysis and a specific program in Matlab that was developed to statistically determine the proportion of anhydrous cement. Industrial by-products containing anhydrous cement were tested by this method and a percentage of around 15-20% was found in the analyzed by-products. The reliability of these results is noteworthy in comparison with those given by classical image analysis software. The reactive characteristic and the hydration kinetics of the analyzed by-products were also verified using isothermal calorimetry and a mechanical study of standard mortars in which the cement had been partially replaced by these by-products. Abstract

Wicking and evaporation occur simultaneously in a variety of situations. In this chapter, we present and study several aspects of wicking/evaporation when evaporation is external mass transfer driven and unconfined or weakly confined. These include the influence of evaporation on the final impregnation height and the impregnation dynamics, the structure and the influence of the evaporation flux density distribution along the wick surface and the transport of a dissolved species. Other effects, still poorly studied, such as the influence of liquid films or the shape of the internal evaporation front in the wick are also addressed. Despite the practical importance of wicking / evaporation situations, this chapter also shows that further works are needed to increase our understanding of the combined action of wicking and evaporation and our prediction capabilities.

Abstract

International audience; The contact of a liquid with a solid wall generally results in an electrical double layer (EDL) which effects are negligible at macroscopic scale but not at microscopic scale. This EDL can be used to drive the liquid (electro-osmosis) or to bring solid particles within the liquid (electrophoresis) by application of an electric field. Without any electric field and in the case of a pressure driven flow, the EDL plays an important role with several consequences on the flow. The objective of this paper is to propose a synthesis and an analysis of the current knowledge about the effects of EDL on Poiseuille microflows. The remaining issues are also examined.; Le contact d'un liquide avec une paroi donne naissance dans la plupart des cas à une double couche électrique (DCE) dont les effets sont négligeables à une échelle macroscopique mais ne le sont plus à une échelle microscopique. Cette DCE peut être exploitée pour mettre le liquide en mouvement (électro-osmose) ou pour déplacer en son sein des particules solides (électrophorèse) par application d'un champ électrique. En l'absence d'un tel champ électrique et dans le cas d'un écoulement généré par gradient de pression, la DCE joue également un rôle, qui n'est plus moteur, mais dont les conséquences apparaissent multiples. La littérature sur ce sujet s'est particulièrement étoffée au cours des dernières années, avec plus d'une centaine de publications traitant des effets de la DCE sur les micro-écoulements de liquides générés par un gradient de pression. L'objectif de cet article est de proposer une synthèse et une analyse de cette bibliographie, montrant l'état des connaissances actuelles et les verrous scientifiques qu'il reste à forcer.

49. X-Ray imaging method evaluation in microfluidics: case of a "T" shaped microchannel filling

Abstract

Fluid flows within "T" or "Y" shaped microchannels are deeply studied in order to develop adapted modeling approaches and experimental techniques. Our technological choice lies on the attenuation measurement of X-ray in matter. The main advantage of this non-intrusive technique is to be implemented on medias opaque to visible light. Moreover, X-rays methods may achieve better spatial resolutions as compared to optical methods because of their much lower wavelength. In order to validate this X-ray method, measurements obtained by this technique are compared with direct measurements carried out on similar microchannels. Finally, experimental results are compared with a theoretical model.

50. Control of evaporation by geometry in capillary structures. From confined pillar arrays in a gap radial gradient to phyllotaxy-inspired geometry.

Abstract

Evaporation is a key phenomenon in the natural environment and in many technological systems involving capillary structures. Understanding the evaporation front dynamics enables the evaporation rate from microfluidic devices and porous media to be finely controlled. Of particular interest is the ability to control the position of the front through suitable design of the capillary structure. Here, we show how to design model capillary structures in microfluidic devices so as to control the drying kinetics. This is achieved by acting on the spatial organization of the constrictions that influence the invasion of the structure by the gas phase. Two types of control are demonstrated. The first is intended to control the sequence of primary invasions through the pore space, while the second aims to control the secondary liquid structures: films, bridges, etc., that can form in the region of pore space invaded by the gas phase. It is shown how the latter can be obtained from phyllotaxy-inspired geometry. Our study thus opens up a route toward the control of the evaporation kinetics by means of tailored capillary structures.
