This thesis explores clumped isotope thermometry in deep time palaeoceanography. We have improved the clumped isotope method, and applied it to gain new absolute temperature estimates for records from the surface oceans across critical climate transitions, as well as insights into deep ocean temperature evolution throughout the late Cenozoic. These new results will provide tuning targets for climate models. If the climate models can accurately simulate palaeoclimate, this increases our confidence in predictions for future climate change. With respect to the average Earth System Sensitivity (ESS) of recent clumped isotope studies of ~6.3°C per doubling of CO2, our results from Walvis Ridge Site 1264 and previous results from the Indian Ocean reveal even higher ESS for the time interval encompassing the onset of the MCO until the Pliocene warm period. This may imply that the water masses in which this site bathed were extremely sensitive to greenhouse warming. Below atmospheric CO2 concentrations of 700 ppm, it appears that the sensitivity may have been higher, potentially suggesting a climate state dependence (as explained in von der Heydt et al., 2016). If we look at Pliocene modelling results, an ESS of 6.2°C was suggested previously (Haywood et al., 2020). Though the uncertainty of our Pliocene data is large, the average suggests a larger sensitivity. A previous latest Miocene estimate of ESS of 9.3±3.8°C seems compatible with our estimates (Brown et al., 2022). High-CO2 world clumped estimates corroborate findings from other studies. If we fit a line separately through the data with atmospheric CO2 concentrations >700 ppm, the slope is similar to the younger interval, albeit with a different intercept. In the most recent IPCC report, palaeoclimate estimates of ECS were used to weigh the model ensemble mean in AR-6, where models with high ECS were given less weight. Our new insights from clumped isotopes may indicate that this weighing should be reconsidered. Furthermore, scaling sparse estimates of sea surface temperature from particular sites to a global average is hard, and analysing deep ocean temperatures that scale to changes in GMST may be a way forward. As our palaeoclimate studies are used more and more to anchor climate models, we must become ever more diligent in understanding all the factors that drive our proxy systems. Proper treatment of both measurement and systematic uncertainties will be paramount in the next decades of palaeoceanography research.

Das neue Geoprofil 17/2023 zu Rohstoffen in Sachsen enthält einen Beitrag zur Zinnmineralisation im Westerzgebirge sowie einen über den Delitzscher Karbonatit-Komplex. Der Sn-Vererzungstyp bei Bockau und Aue-Bad Schlema ist völlig verschieden von dem der Greisen-, Trümerzonen-, Gang- und Skarntypen und ist auch nicht vergleichbar mit der Zinnvererzung der Felsitzone bei Freiberg. Die neuen Untersuchungen erbrachten erstmalig den Nachweis einer im Erzgebirge verbreiteten low-grade mineralization vom Typ einer frühvariszischen polystadialen, vorwiegend monomineralischen und metamorph geprägten Erzbildung. Insbesondere durch Bohrarbeiten der SDAG Wismut ist die Verbreitung der ultramafischen Lamprophyre (UML) und Karbonatite mit oberkretazischem Alter im Gebiet von Delitzsch gut bekannt. in English The studied part of the Hammar Domain is composed of the Neoproterozoic basement rocks belonging to the Southern Ethiopian Shield (SES), partly covered by volcanic and volcanosedimentary deposits of the Main Ethiopian Rift (MER). The high-grade migmatite to migmatized biotite paragneiss and amphibolites were intruded by numerous peraluminous granite and granodiorite bodies and gabbros of metaluminous composition. The results of U/Pb zircon dating of granodiorite yielded at 507.7 ± 3.2 Ma, which is interpreted as the age of magma emplacement and crystallization. The P-T estimation reveal the peak P-T conditions at ca. 1.21 to 0.88 GPa and ca. 842 to 700 řC which were followed by retrograde part P-T path (from ca. 0.84 to 0.12 GPa) with decrease of temperature from ca. 700 to 464 řC. The emplacement of gabbro in syn-tectonic settings took place at P = ca. 0.87 to 0.93 GPa and T ca. 650 řC reflecting magma emplacement to ca. 30 km in depth. Next, the syn- to post- tectonic emplacement and crystallization of biotite and amphibole-bioitite granodiorite reveal P = 0.27-0.52 GPa and T ca. 720-836. The events described above were associated with the latter period of the East-African Orogeny, which resulted in overall consolidation of the Gondwana continent.

Die Diageneseforschung ist die Grundlage für die Charakterisierung und Exploration von Kohlenwasserstofflagerstätten. Die reaktive Transportmodellierung (RTM) ist ein neuer Ansatz für die Diageneseforschung mit der einzigartigen Fähigkeit zur Quantifizierung und Vorwärtsmodellierung der gekoppelten thermo-hydrochemischen Prozesse der Diagenese. Diese Arbeit untersucht die beiden wichtigsten Fluid-Gesteins-Wechselwirkungen in Karbonatgesteinen, d. h. Dolomitisierung und Verkarstung, basierend auf generischen Modellanalysen und einer Fallstudie im Ordos-Becken, China. Bei der Refluxdolomitisierung werden zunehmender Dolomit, abnehmender Kalzit und dynamische Gipsausfällung/-auflösung beobachtet. Höherer Solesalzgehalt, Temperatur und reaktive Oberfläche tragen zu einem höheren Dolomitisierungsgrad bei. Die Porosität-Permeabilität des Gesteins wird kollektiv durch die Porenzunahme durch Dolomitisierung und die Porenfüllung durch Gipsausfällung gesteuert. Bei der eogenetischen Verkarstung gibt es einen abnehmenden Trend bei der Karbonatauflösung und Gesteinsporosität. Die Dauer der subaerialen Exposition und das Klima bestimmen maßgeblich die vom Karst beeinflusste Tiefe und Porositätszunahme. Die atmosphärische pCO2-Konzentration hat einen geringen Einfluss auf die Karstausdehnung, während sie die Auflösungsgeschwindigkeit beeinflusst. Eine integrierte geologische und RTM-Studie zeigt, dass die Hauptporositäten des Reservoirs der Ordovizium-Majiagou-Formation im Ordos-Becken während der frühen Diagenese entstanden sind. Die mehrstufige Refluxdolomitisierung fand in der eingeschränkten Verdunstungsumgebung statt, was zu einem maximalen Porositätszuwachs von 7,3% des Lagunenfazies-Mikrits führte. Der eogenetische Karst entwickelte sich hauptsächlich in Schwarmfazies-Grainstein mit einer Dauer der subaerialen Exposition von 30–110 ka und einer Porositätszunahme von 1,5–6,7% (durchschnittlich 3,1%). Die weitere Exploration des Reservoirs sollte sich auf die Sedimentumgebung und die Paläogeographie konzentrieren, die die Dolomitisierung und Verkarstung kontrollieren. Die Ergebnisse sind hilfreich, um die räumlich-zeitliche Verteilung und Koevolution von Diagenese und Mineralporosität besser zu verstehen und die Unsicherheit der Vorhersage der Reservoirqualität zu verringern., Diagenesis research is the foundation of hydrocarbon reservoir characterization and exploration. Reactive transport modeling (RTM) is an emerging approach for diagenesis research, with the unique capability of quantification and forward modeling of the coupled thermo-hydro-chemical processes of diagenesis. This thesis investigates the two most important fluid-rock interactions in carbonate rocks, i.e., dolomitization and karstification, based on generic model analyses and a case study in the Ordos Basin, China. For reflux dolomitization, increasing dolomite, decreasing calcite and dynamic gypsum precipitation/dissolution are observed. Higher brine salinity, temperature and reactive surface area contribute to a higher degree of dolomitization. The rock porosity-permeability is collectively controlled by pore-increment via dolomitization and pore-infill by gypsum precipitation. For eogenetic karstification, there is a downward decreasing trend in carbonate dissolution and rock porosity. The duration of subaerial exposure and climate significantly determine the karst-affected depth and porosity increment. The atmospheric pCO2 concentration has a minor impact on the extent of karst, while it affects the dissolution rate. Integrated geological and RTM study shows that the major porosities of the Ordovician Majiagou Formation reservoir in the Ordos Basin were formed during early diagenesis. The multistage reflux dolomitization occurred in the restricted-evaporative environment, giving rise to a maximum 7.3% porosity increment of lagoon-facies micrite. The eogenetic karst developed mainly in shoal-facies grainstone, with the duration of subaerial exposure of 30– 110 ka and porosity increments of 1.5%–6.7% (average 3.1%). Further exploration of the reservoir should focus on sedimentary environment and paleogeography which control dolomitization and karstification. The results are helpful to better understand the spatial-temporal distribution and co-evolution of diagenesis and mineral-porosity, and to reduce the uncertainty of reservoir quality prediction.

Considering the ever-growing global demand for raw materials and the complexity of the geological deposits that are still to be found, high-quality extensive mineralogical information is required. Mineral exploration remains a risk-prone process, with empirical approaches prevailing over data-driven strategy. Amongst the many ways to innovate, hyperspectral imaging sensors for drill-core mineral mapping are one of the disruptive technologies. This potential could be multiplied by implementing machine learning. This dissertation introduces a workflow that allows the use of supervised learning to map minerals by means of ancillary data commonly acquired during exploration campaigns (i.e., mineralogy, geochemistry and core photography). The fusion of hyperspectral with such ancillary data allows not only to upscale to complete boreholes information acquired locally, but also to enhance the spatial resolution of the mineral maps. Driven by the need to use mineral resources more sustainably, and the increasing complexity of ore deposits still available for commercial exploitation, the acquisition of quantitative data on mineralogy and microfabric has become an important need in the execution of exploration and geometallurgical test programmes. Hyperspectral drill-core scanning has the potential to be an excellent tool for providing such data in a fast, non- destructive and reproducible manner. However, there is a distinct lack of integrated methodologies to make use of these data through-out the exploration and mining chain. This thesis presents a first framework for the use of hyperspectral drill-core scanning as a pillar in exploration and geometallurgical programmes. Die Dynamik des tropischen Pazifiks spielt eine tragende Rolle für das Erdklima. Die Charakterisierung der natürlichen Klimavariabilität ist von grundlegender Bedeutung für das Verständnis des voranschreitenden Klimawandels und der Vorhersage zukünftiger Klimaveränderungen. Die vorliegende Arbeit zielt auf die Identifikation und Dokumentation heutiger und vergangener Dynamik der El Niño-Southern Oscillation in zwei Höhlensystemen im Pazifikraum. Die Waipuna Höhle auf der Nordinsel von Aotearoa/Neuseeland wurde für die Untersuchung des heutigen ENSO-Einflusses auf die regionale Hydrologie gewählt. Die Insel Niue im tropischen Pazifik wurde zudem für die Untersuchung des tropischen Hydroklimas gewählt. Die hier vorgestellte Arbeit trägt zum Verständnis der Prozesse in Höhlen bei, insbesondere mit Hinblick auf die saisonal variierende Einbettung geochemischer Proxies in Speläotheme, und hilft, die Interpretation sehr hoch aufgelöster Umweltrekonstruktionen zu verfeinern.

Nach dem frühen Biomineralisierungsereignis im frühen Paläozoikum (Kambrium - Ordovizium; 541 – 443.8 Ma) stellt die Späte Trias (237 – 201.3 Ma) eine andere chlüsselperiode für Biomineralisierung mit der Verbreitung von kalkigem Nannoplankton dar. Im Karnuim (237 – 227 Ma) werden die ersten kalzifizierenden Dinoflagellaten nachgewiesen, gefolgt von den Nannolithen im mittleren Norium (Alaunium) und von den Coccolithophoriden, deren erstes Auftreten bis zu diesen Untersuchungen an der Norium-Rhaetium Grenze bekannt war. Diese marinen Primärproduzenten beeinflussen über den Photosynthese- und Verkalkungsprozess die Konzentration von ozeanischem und atmosphärischem CO2. Die Datierung und die Quantifizierung ihrer frühen Entwicklung würden helfen, ihren Einfluss auf die Ozeanchemie während der Späten Trias zu verstehen. Die österreichischen Nördlichen Kalkalpen, die rumänische Norddobrudscha und Nordwestaustralien weisen mehrere potenziell geeignete Sedimente aus der Obertrias auf. Ziel dieses Projektes war es, Aufschlüsse im Norium und im Rhaetium von weit entfernten Fundorten rund um die wenig untersuchte Palaeo-Tethys sowie den Neo-Tethys-Ozean (in der Obertrias) zu untersuchen. In sechs österreichischen und rumänischen Profilen (25°N), in einem Profil aus der Türkei (Paläo-Äquator) und in sechs Aufschlüssen aus dem Oman (20°S)wurden kalkige Nannofossilien beobachtet (Licht- und Rasterelektronenmikroskop) und, soweit möglich, quantifiziert. Parallel dazu wurden zunächst geochemische Analysen mit Spurenelementkonzentrationen durchgeführt, um den Einfluss der Diagenese auf den Erhalt der Sedimente und kalkhaltigen Nannofossilien zu bewerten, aber auch um Veränderungen der Verwitterungsrate während der Späten Trias zu verfolgen. Zweitens wurden Isotopenmessungen an Strontium, Kalzium und Kohlenstoff durchgeführt, um die Umweltbedingungen während der frühen Entwicklung der kalkigen Nannofossilien besser zu verstehen. Die ersten Coccolithen, die nicht auf Artebene identifiziert wurden, kamen im mittleren Norium (Alaunium 3) vor. Die älteste identifizierte Coccolithen-Art ist Crucirhabdus minutus, der im oberen Norium (Sevatium) beobachtet wurde, gefolgt von Archaeozygodiscus koessenensis. Crucirhabdus primulus kam erstmals im unteren Rhaetium vor. Diese Vorkommen lassen C. minutus als Vorfahren der Coccolithophoriden und eine langsame zeitliche Entwicklung vermuten. C. primulus trat ~ 4,2 Millionen Jahre nach dem Vorfahren C. minutus auf, und die Entwicklung der neuen Gattung Archaeozygodiscus dauert etwa 0,35 Myr. Die Art Prinsiosphaera triassica, deren taxonomisch-systematische Zuordnung nicht geklärt ist, dominiert die Vergesellschaftungen in der gesamten Obertrias. Ihre Häufigkeit nimmt im unteren und mittleren Rhaetium leicht zu und erreicht ihre maximale Häufigkeit im Oberrhaetium. Detaillierte mikroskopische Untersuchungen zeigten zwei unterschiedliche signifikante Strukturen der kegelförmigen rhaetischen Formen der Gattung Eoconusphaera. Eine neue Art, E. hallstattensis, wurde beschrieben und die Beschreibung von E. zlambachensis wurde emendiert. Diese beiden Arten liefern neue biostratigraphische Marker für das Rhaetium mit kurzen und spezifischen Vorkommensintervallen. Eoconusphaera hallstattensis ist auf die obere Paracochloceras suessi-Zone (unteres Rhaetium) beschränkt und verschwand während der unteren Vandaites stuerzenbaumi-Zone (mittleres Rhaetium), wo sie durch die zweite Eoconusphaera-Art E. zlambachensis ersetzt wurde. Im ganzen Rhaetium ist P. triassica von Stresszuständen betroffen. Erstens führt das Auftreten von Eoconusphaeraceae zu einer Konkurrenz zwischen den P. triassica und den Eoconusphaeraceae und zweitens beinflussen paläo-ökologische Veränderungen sein Verkalkungspotential, was zu einer Größenabnahme gegenüber dem unteren Rhaetium führte. Diese beiden Arten, P. triassica und E. zlambachensis, wurden zum ersten Mal in rumänischen Aufschlüssen (Norddobrudscha) im Paläo-Tethys-Ozean während der Späten Trias beobachtet und sind, wenn vorhanden, häufig.Während der Obertrias werden die kalkigen Nannofossilien in beiden Hemisphären beobachtet und zeigen eine zunehmende Häufigkeit durch das Rhaetium und werden im Oberrhaetium als gesteinsbildend beschrieben. Der Vergleich zwischen Quantifizierungsdaten und Kalziumisotopenmessungen gibt allerdings keinen Hinweis auf einen signifikanten Einfluss dieser kalkproduzierenden Organismen auf die geochemische Zusammensetzung des westlichen Neo-Tethys-Ozeans. After the early biomineralisation event in the early Paleozoic (Cambrian – Ordovician; 541 – 443.8 Ma), the Late Triassic (237 – 201.3 Ma) represents another key period of biomineralisation with the onset of the Mesozoic plankton radiation. In the Carnian (237 – 227 Ma), the first calcifying dinoflagellates are recorded followed by the nannoliths in the middle Norian (Alaunian) and the coccolithophorids dated until this study at the Norian/Rhaetian boundary. Those marine primary producers are influencing the concentration of oceanic and atmospheric CO2 via their photosynthesis and calcification processes. Timing and quantification of their early evolution would help to understand their impact on the ocean chemistry during the Late Triassic. The Austrian Northern Calcareous Alps, Romanian North Dobrogea and North West Australia record several good potential sediments from the Upper Triassic. This project aims to investigate Norian to Rhaetian outcrops from widespread localities around the poorly studied Paleo-Tethys as well as the Neo-Tethys Ocean in the Upper Triassic. The calcareous nannofossils contents were observed by light and scanning electron microscope and quantified (if present) in six Austrian and Romanian sections (25°N), one section from Turkey (palaeo-equator), and six sections from Oman (20°S). In parallel, geochemical analyses were performed first with trace elements concentration to evaluate the impact of diagenesis on the preservation of the sediments and calcareous nannofossils but also to trace changes in weathering rate during the Late Triassic. Second, isotopic measurements were performed for strontium, calcium and carbon to better constrain the environmental conditions during the early evolution of the calcareous nannofossils. The first coccoliths, not identified at a species level, occurred in the middle Norian (Alaunian 3). The oldest coccolith species identified is Crucirhabdus minutus, observed in the upper Norian (Sevatian), followed by Archaeozygodiscus koessenensis. Crucirhabdus primulus first occurred in the lower Rhaetian. These occurrences suggest C. minutus as the ancestor of the coccolithophorids and a slow temporal evolution. C. primulus occurred ~ 4.2 million years after the ancestor C. minutus, and the evolution of the new genus A. koessenensis takes around 0.35 Myr. The incertae sedis, Prinsiosphaera triassica dominates the assemblage throughout the Upper Triassic. Its abundance increases slightly in the lower and middle Rhaetian and reaches its maximum abundance in the upper Rhaetian. Detailed microscopic investigations detected two different significant structures of the conical Rhaetian forms belonging to Eoconusphaera. Based on this, a new species, E. hallstattensis was described and E. zlambachensis was emended. Those two species represent new biostratigraphic markers for the Rhaetian with short and specific occurrence intervals. Eoconusphaera hallstattensis is constrained to the upper Paracochloceras suessi Zone (lower Rhaetian) and disappeared during the lower Vandaites stuerzenbaumi Zone (middle Rhaetian), wherein it is progressively replaced by the second Eoconusphaeraceae species E. zlambachensis. Throughout the Rhaetian, P. triassica is affected by biological and environmental stress conditions. First, with the occurrence of Eoconusphaeraceae introducing competition between the P. triassica and the Eoconusphaeraceae and, second palaeo-environmental changes alter its calcification potential, leading to a size decrease from the lower Rhaetian. These two species, P. triassica and E. zlambachensis were observed for the first time in Romanian sections (North Dobrogea) located in the Palaeo-Tethys Ocean during the Late Triassic and are common (if present).During the Upper Triassic, the calcareous nannofossils are observed in both hemispheres and show increasing abundance through the Rhaetian and are described as rock-forming during the upper Rhaetian. The comparison between quantification data and calcium isotope measurements does not show any evidence for a significant influence of those calcifiers on the geochemical composition of the Western Neo-Tethys Ocean. Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit der Rekonstruktion des globalen Handels mit Metallen, der sich während der frühen Neuzeit zwischen Europa, Afrika und Indien entwickelt hat. Dabei wurden über geochemische Analyseverfahren (Isotopengeochemie und Spurenelementanalytik) über 300 Buntmetallobjekte von Schiffswracks, vornehmlich Barren aus Kupfer, Messing, Zinn und Blei untersucht, um den historischen Kenntnisstand dieser Epoche zu erweitern. Da es das erste Mal ist, dass geochemische Analysen zur Lösung neuzeitlich-historischer Fragestellungen in diesem Rahmen angewandt worden sind, wird evaluiert, inwiefern sich diese Herangehensweise überhaupt lohnt, bzw. welche neuen Informationen für die historische Forschung erarbeitet werden können. Dies wird an verschiedenen Fallstudien abschließend geprüft. Im Laufe der Erdgeschichte sind flache Binnenmeere häufig zu beobachten. Die damit verbundenen karbonatischen Sedimentgesteine stellen eines der wichtigsten Archive für geologische Informationen und die Entwicklung der Erde dar. Um fossile Karbonataufzeichungen besser interpretieren zu können, ist es wichtig, ihre modernen Analoga zu untersuchen. Einer dieser wenigen modernen Analoga ist der Persische Golf und seine Küstenregion in Abu Dhabi. Diese Studie dokumentiert eine Kombination aus Meerwasser, Karbonatsedimenten und frühdiagenetischen Merkmalen aus dem Küstengebiet von Abu Dhabi und diskutiert deren ökologische Implikationen. Dabei wird die komplexe Natur der marinen frühdiagenetischen Merkmale und Meerwassereigenschaften, die alle das Potenzial haben, die Karbonataufzeichnungen zu beeinflussen, deutlich. Diese Erkenntnisse ermöglichen ein besseres Verständnis von Binnenmeeren und können als Grundlage für die Untersuchung von Karbonatablagerungen der Binnenmeere., Geologically, shallow epeiric seas were common, and associated carbonate sediments represent one of the most important archives of geological information and Earth’s evolution. Thus, it is relevant to study their modern analogs to better interpret fossil carbonate records. The (Persian/Arabian) Gulf and its coastal region in Abu Dhabi represent one of the rare modern analogs. This study documents a combination of seawater, carbonate sediment and early diagenetic features from the Abu Dhabi coastal area and discusses their environmental implications. The results reveal the complex nature of early marine diagenetic features and seawater properties that all have the potential to affect the carbonate record. The findings herein provide a better understanding of epeiric seas and may serve as a litmus test for the study of ancient carbonate deposits from past epeiric seas.

The advent of unoccupied aerial systems (UAS) as disruptive technology has a lasting impact on remote sensing, geophysics and most geosciences. Small, lightweight, and low-cost UAS enable researchers and surveyors to acquire earth observation data in higher spatial and spectral resolution as compared to airborne and satellite data. UAS-based applications range from rapid topographic mapping using photogrammetric techniques to hyperspectral and geophysical measurements of surface and subsurface geology. UAS surveys contribute to identifying metal deposits, monitoring of mine sites and can reveal arising environmental issues associated with mining. Further, affordable UAS technology will boost exploration data availability and expertise in the global south. This thesis investigates the application of UAS-based multi-sensor data for mineral exploration, in particular the integration of hyperspectral imagers, magnetometers and digital cameras (covering the visible red, green, blue light spectrum). UAS-based research is maturing, however the aforementioned methods are not unified effectively. RGB-based photogrammetry is used to investigate topography and surface texture. Image spectrometers measure mineral-specific surface signatures. Magnetometers detect geomagnetic field changes caused by magnetic minerals at surface and depth. The integration of such UAS sensor-based methods in this thesis augments exploration potential with non-invasive, high-resolution, safe, rapid and practical survey methods. UAS-based surveying acquired, processed and integrated data from three distinct test sites. The sites are located in Finland (Fe-Ti-V at Otanmäki; apatite at Siilinjärvi) and Greenland (Ni-Cu-PGE at Qullissat, Disko Island) and were chosen as geologically diverse areas in subarctic to arctic environments. Restricted accessibility, unfavourable atmospheric conditions, dark rocks, debris and vegetation cover and low solar illumination were common features. While the topography in Finland was moderately flat, a steep landscape challenged the Greenland field work. These restraints meant that acquisitions varied from site to site and how data was integrated and interpreted is dependent on the commodity of interest. Iron-based spectral absorption and magnetic mineral response were detected using hyperspectral and magnetic surveying in Otanmäki. Multi-sensor-based image feature detection and classification combined with magnetic forward modelling enabled seamless geologic mapping in Siilinjärvi. Detailed magnetic inversion and multispectral photogrammetry led to the construction of a comprehensive 3D model of magmatic exploration targets in Greenland. Ground truth at different intensity was employed to verify UAS-based data interpretations during all case studies. Laboratory analysis was applied when deemed necessary to acquire geologic-mineralogic validation (e.g., X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy for mineral identification to establish lithologic domains, magnetic susceptibility measurements for subsurface modelling), for example for trace amounts of magnetite in carbonatite (Siilinjärvi) and native iron occurrence in basalt (Qullissat). Technical achievements were the integration of a multicopter-based prototype fluxgate-magnetometer data from different survey altitudes with ground truth, and a feasibility study with a high-speed multispectral image system for fixed-wing UAS. The employed case studies transfer the experiences made towards general recommendations for UAS application-based multi-sensor integration. This thesis highlights the feasibility of UAS-based surveying at target scale (1–50 km2) and solidifies versatile survey approaches for multi-sensor integration. Ziel dieser Arbeit war es, das Potenzial einer Drohnen-basierten Mineralexploration mit Multisensor-Datenintegration unter Verwendung optisch-spektroskopischer und magnetischer Methoden zu untersuchen, um u. a. übertragbare Arbeitsabläufe zu erstellen. Die untersuchte Literatur legt nahe, dass Drohnen-basierte Bildspektroskopie und magnetische Sensoren ein ausgereiftes technologisches Niveau erreichen und erhebliches Potenzial für die Anwendungsentwicklung bieten, aber es noch keine ausreichende Synergie von hyperspektralen und magnetischen Methoden gibt. Diese Arbeit umfasste drei Fallstudien, bei denen die Drohnengestützte Vermessung von geologischen Zielen in subarktischen bis arktischen Regionen angewendet wurde. Eine Kombination von Drohnen-Technologie mit RGB, Multi- und Hyperspektralkameras und Magnetometern ist vorteilhaft und schuf die Grundlage für eine integrierte Modellierung in den Fallstudien. Die Untersuchungen wurden in einem Gelände mit flacher und zerklüfteter Topografie, verdeckten Zielen und unter oft schlechten Lichtverhältnissen durchgeführt. Unter diesen Bedingungen war es das Ziel, die Anwendbarkeit von Drohnen-basierten Multisensordaten in verschiedenen Explorationsumgebungen zu bewerten. Hochauflösende Oberflächenbilder und Untergrundinformationen aus der Magnetik wurden fusioniert und gemeinsam interpretiert, dabei war eine selektive Gesteinsprobennahme und Analyse ein wesentlicher Bestandteil dieser Arbeit und für die Validierung notwendig. Für eine Eisenerzlagerstätte wurde eine einfache Ressourcenschätzung durchgeführt, indem Magnetik, bildspektroskopisch-basierte Indizes und 2D-Strukturinterpretation integriert wurden. Fotogrammetrische 3D-Modellierung, magnetisches forward-modelling und hyperspektrale Klassifizierungen wurden für eine Karbonatit-Intrusion angewendet, um einen kompletten Explorationsabschnitt zu erfassen. Eine Vektorinversion von magnetischen Daten von Disko Island, Grönland, wurden genutzt, um großräumige 3D-Modelle von undifferenzierten Erdrutschblöcken zu erstellen, sowie diese zu identifizieren und zu vermessen. Die integrierte spektrale und magnetische Kartierung in komplexen Gebieten verbesserte die Erkennungsrate und räumliche Auflösung von Erkundungszielen und reduzierte Zeit, Aufwand und benötigtes Probenmaterial für eine komplexe Interpretation. Der Prototyp einer Multispektralkamera, gebaut für eine Starrflügler-Drohne für die schnelle Vermessung, wurde entwickelt, erfolgreich getestet und zum Teil ausgewertet. Die vorgelegte Arbeit zeigt die Vorteile und Potenziale von Multisensor-Drohnen als praktisches, leichtes, sicheres, schnelles und komfortabel einsetzbares geowissenschaftliches Werkzeug, um digitale Modelle für präzise Rohstofferkundung und geologische Kartierung zu erstellen.

Wie, wann und warum begannen plattentektonische Prozesse auf der Erde? Diese Fragen sind in der heutigen Geologie elementar. Auf ausführlichen Studien der letzten zwei Jahrzehnte basiert der allgemeine Konsens, dass die plattentektonischen Prozesse des Hadaikums und Archaikums (~4,54-2,5 Milliarden Jahre (Ga)) zunächst einer \(\it stagnant-lid\)-Tektonik zuzuordnen sind, bevor sich sukzessive ein plattentektonisches Regime entwickelte. In dieser Studie wird allerdings gezeigt, dass die thermale Entstehung kontinentaler Kruste im konvergenten Regime des Archaikums pulsierend ist und mit dem \(\it peel-back\)-Modell vergleichbar ist. Analysiert wurden natürliche Gesteine der frühen kontinentalen Erdkruste des Coorg-Blocks und der Mercara-Scherzone (MRSZ) aus Südindien unter Anwendung von Prinzipien der metamorphen Petrologie, der \(\it Geospeedometrie\) und der Isotopengeochemie. Zusätzlich wurden die Ergebnisse mit numerischen Modellierungen hinsichtlich der Kongruenz verglichen und so bestätigt.

The thesis presents research on recent hydrothermal discharge features in a shallow marine hydrothermal system. It aims to clarify their occurrence, genesis, and preservation potential. A facies model is developed, being based on the processes involved in the formation and the prevailing lithofacies. It describes six major groups: channels, fractures, tubes, cones, bowls, and lineaments. Each of these groups subdivides into numerous facies types according to the cements or mineral precipitates prevailing. To clarify the rather complex formation processes of hydrothermal discharge features, genetic models for each facies are proposed. An integrated evolutionary model is developed considering the temporal evolution of the major types of hydrothermal discharge features in the Panarea system and their preservation potential. Taiwan is situated along an active plate boundary between the Eurasian Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate, with a convergence rate at about 80 mm/yr. The convergence results in an ongoing mountain building that displays a structure particularly complex. This dissertation mainly focuses on the structural and tectonic evolution of the Taiwan fold-and-thrust belt and its eastern metamorphic Yuli Belt in the Central Range. The study involves geological mapping, cross-section construction and balancing, whole-rock geochemistry analysis, Raman spectroscopic geothermometry, and palaeogeographic reconstructions. (1) Three crustal-scale geological cross-sections at various latitudes of the Taiwan fold-and-thrust belt were constructed. The largely Eurasian basement overthrust the Cenozoic passive margin series and which are tectonically overlain by the upper-plate-derived Coastal Range series. The restoration of cross sections yields a minimum shortening of ca. 120 km in the Eurasian passive margin series, on top of which the accreted material was initially sitting, already subducted below the Philippine Sea Plate. (2) Fieldwork and structural analyses indicate three deformation phases in the Yuli Belt. Based on cross sections and a review of available P-T-t data, we suspect that blueschist-facies units could have been emplaced on top of greenschist-facies metasedimentary units along a thrust during a first deformation phase D1. (3) We integrated new and published Raman-spectroscopic measurements on carbonaceous matter from metasedimentary successions across the Tailuko and Yuli Belts and combined these results with new cross sections. We suggest that the Yuli Belt was initially emplaced on top of lower-grade Paleogene successions. Later, the nappe succession was overprinted by E-vergent backfolding of the Central Range and contemporaneous backthrusting along the Shoufeng Fault, leading to the presently observed synformal structure of the Yuli Belt.

The Davle Volcanic Complex (DVC) situated in the Teplá-Barrandian unit (TBU) of the Bohemian Massif, is considered as a Neoproterozoic-Cambrian magmatic arc that developed on the northern active margin of Gondwana supercontinent during Cadomian accretionary orogeny. This study combines data obtained from fieldwork, petrography, rock-forming mineral microanalysis, major and trace element analysis, Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic systematics and U-Pb zircon geochronology in order to reveal the petrogenesis and evolution of the DVC. At least three-stage metamorphism including Cadomian seafloor alteration, Variscan regional metamorphism as well as contact metamorphism related to the emplacement of the Central Bohemian Plutonic Complex affected the DVC. The studied rocks follow calc-alkaline trend whereas tholeiitic trend previously reported is rather related to younger magmatic events. The northern part of the DVC is dominated by felsic subvolcanic (plagiogranite), volcanic (dacite- rhyolite) and pyroclastic (dacitic-rhyolitic tuffs and breccias) rocks with a few outcrops of basaltic andesite-andesite pillow lavas documenting the subaqueous activity of the DVC. These rocks are Na-rich, but K-poor, the plagiogranite contains albite most likely primary in origin, and exhibit highly radiogenic εNd values (~ +6 to +11),...

This diploma thesis is focused on the creation and use of educational computer games in teaching geochemistry at the second grade of primary school. The aim of this game is to pass on appropriate knowledge to students in an attractive way, to develop interdisciplinary relations, their internal motivation and key competences. The game is localized in well-known places of Šumava and the player is informed about its local geographical and historical attractions. The theoretical part is based on analysis of professional literature. Findings of this analysis are the theoretical framework of knowledge for the following practical part, in which the educational game is created and verified in practice. The research was conducted online and its results are discussed in the final part of the work. Based on the feedback from the students, possible modifications of the test version of the game were suggested.

The Río Blanco–Los Bronces (Chile) is one of the richest endowed porphyry copper-molybdenum districts worldwide, where about 20% of the known mineralization is hosted by tourmaline-cemented hydrothermal breccia. This work seeks: (1) to find a relationship between tourmaline chemical and/or isotopic composition and the degree of mineralization in the breccia, (2) to constrain the source of the mineralizing fluid in the breccia, and (3) to determine of the composition and age of intrusive units in three new exploration projects and correlate them with the known intrusive rocks of the mine areas. Tourmaline from mineralized and barren breccias has similar boron isotopic compositions but differences in Mg/(Mg+Fe) ratios, Al-contents and Al-Fe correlation, which may have exploration value. Boron and sulfur isotopes results are consistent with a magmatic source of hydrothermal fluids. Im Umfeld von Delitzsch befinden sich unter der etwa 100 m mächtigen Bedeckung aus tertiären Lockersedimenten mehrere magmatische Körper aus Karbonat. Im Jahr 2012 wurde durch die Deutsche Rohstoff AG bei Storkwitz eine 700 m tiefe Explorationsbohrung auf Seltene Erden Elemente abgeteuft. Im Rahmen eines Forschungsprojektes wurde der Frage nachgegangen, wie und woher die Seltenen Erden in das Gestein hineingelangten. Die Ergebnisse können Hinweise auf möglicherweise bisher unbekannte Anreicherungen von Seltenen Erden in anderen Nebengesteinen als den Karbonatiten geben. Die Veröffentlichung liegt nur in englischer Sprache vor. The Storkwitz-Carbonatite is a Late Cretaceous intrusive complex, which is well-explored by a relatively large number of exploration bore holes both from the 1970ies, 1980ies and from one more recent bore hole, SES-1/2012. The carbonatite complex hosts a (currently) marginally economic mineralisation of rare earth elements (REE) and niobium, which is technically still difficult to recover. The upper part of the carbonatitic body is located some 100-120 m below the Pre-Cenozoic land surface, which in turn is overlain by approximately 100 m of glacial, fluvio-glacial, and fluviatile sediments. The aim of this study was to characterize the mineralisation in the upper part of the intrusion geochemically and mineralogically and to try to identify indications of a supergene overprint on the late magmatic to hydrothermal mineralisation. Fresh drill core samples from the exploration bore hole SES-1/2012 have revealed that the mineralisation is associated with a carbonatitic igneous breccia body and also with several alvikite veins. The breccia body is very heterogeneous, displays a variety of matrix colours and also a range of matrix-to-clast ratios.

The Venus Emissivity Mapper (VEM) has a mature design with an existing laboratory prototype verifying an achievable instrument SNR of well above 1000 as well as a predicted error in the retrieval of relative emissivity of better than 1%. VEM will provide a global map of surface composition as well as redox state of the surface by observing the surface with six narrow band filters, ranging from 0.86 to 1.18 μm. Continuous observation of Venus’ thermal emission will place tight constraints on current day volcanic activity. Eight additional channels provide measurements of atmospheric water vapor abundance as well as cloud microphysics and dynamics and permit accurate correction of atmospheric interference on the surface data. A mission combining VEM with a high-resolution radar mapper such as the ESA EnVision or NASA VERITAS mission proposals will provide key insights in the divergent evolution of Venus. Here we discuss the approach and results of the evaluation of the VEM sensor’s radiometric performance by an analysis of the corresponding signal processing chain. The passage of a simulated radiometric scene signal of the planet Venus through the VEM optics, detector, analog and digital electronics has been evaluated based on a theoretical model of the system. The goal was to verify the overall system performance with respect to the scientific requirements. This is building on our preliminary evaluation of the VEM laboratory prototype and confirms that the VEM design has significant performance margins.

This study on the interaction of Holocene climate, human impact and environment in the northern Central Alps uses geochemical, pollen and radiocarbon analyses in peat samples. Mires were cored and analysed in the Kleinwalser Valley (Vorarlberg, Austria), Piller Mire (Tyrol, Austria) and upper Fimba Valley (Grisons, Switzerland). For different reasons, using portable X-Ray-Fluorescence analysis (pXRF) for peat is uncommon. The calibration of pXRF with Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) shows that e.g. Ti, Pb, Sr can be used as palaeoenvironmental proxies in peat, allowing the following conclusions: At c. 8200 and in the late 7th millennium BP, wet and cold climate conditions prevail in the region. The earliest land use is recorded in the Kleinwalser Valley around 5500 cal BP, with fire clearings, pastoralism and previously undetected regional metallurgy. Centuries before mining boomed in the Eastern Alps, metallurgy around the Piller Mire is detected at c. 4300 cal BP. The strongest prehistoric land use affects all sites in the Bronze Age (3500-3000 cal BP). Potential metal enrichments are masked by mineral input. This period is followed by decreasing land use until the late Roman period. However, a strong Pb enrichment factor (Pb EF) in the Kleinwalser Valley is recorded around 2700 cal BP. Human impact increases in northwestern Tyrol around 2400 cal BP. Metallurgy is indicated by increased Pb EF during the Roman Empire and right after its collapse. Human activities rise again with fading Roman power after 250 cal CE in the Kleinwalser Valley but are interrupted by a climate deterioration after 500 cal CE (Late Antique Little Ice Age). At high elevations, land use intensifies not before the High Middle Ages, when also regional mining operations arise. While Pb EF rises continuously until 1980 cal CE, fluctuating human impact can be linked to climatic, cultural or demographic factors. Recently, growing tourism and construction increase erosion. Dazu wurden Bergmoore in drei Untersuchungsgebieten der NZA ausgewählt: Kleinwalsertal (Vorarlberg, Österreich), Piller Moor (Tirol, Österreich) und oberes Fimbatal (Graubünden, Schweiz). Der Einsatz der tragbaren Röntgenfluoreszenzanalyse (pXRF) für Torfproben ist jedoch selten. Nach dessen Kalibrierung mit Induktiv gekoppelter Plasma-Massenspektrometrie (ICP-MS) lassen sich u.a. Ti, Pb, Sr und andere als Paläoökologieproxys verwenden. Die Ergebnisse lassen folgende Schlüsse zu: Um 8200 und ca. 6200 cal BP herrscht regional feuchtkaltes Klima. Frühe Landnutzung zeigt sich im Kleinwalsertal um 5500 cal BP (Brandrodung, Beweidung und Hinweisen auf regionale Metallurgie). Jahrhunderte vor dem Boom der Bergbaugebiete in den Ostalpen, sind metallurgische Spuren um das Piller Moor für c. 4300 cal BP nachweisbar. Die stärkste prähistorische menschliche Landnutzung betrifft alle Standorte in der Bronzezeit (3500-3000 cal BP). Darauf folgt eine Phase geringerer Landnutzung, die bis weit in die römische Zeit reicht. Im Kleinwalsertal wird jedoch um 2700 cal BP eine erhöhte Bleianreicherung (Pb EF) sichtbar, während östlich die Landnutzung um 2400 cal BP zunimmt. Der römische Bergbau wird durch erhöhte Pb EFs angezeigt. Eine Episode regionalen Bergbaus zeigt sich unmittelbar nach dem Zerfall des Römischen Reiches. Intensivere Landnutzung beginnt ab ca. 250 cal CE im Kleinwalsertal, wird aber durch eine Klimaverschlechterung (500 cal CE) unterbrochen. An den höher gelegenen Standorten findet die Intensivierung erst im Hochmittelalter statt. Während der Pb EF bis 1980 cal CE stark ansteigt, können Landnutzungsspuren mit klimatischen und demografischen Faktoren verbunden werden. Im 20. Jahrhundert verstärken wachsender Tourismus- und Infrastrukturbau die Erosion.

With a size of ~10,000 km² the Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt lake in the world. It is located at a height of 3,653 m a.s.l. in the southern part of the Bolivian Altiplano, an endorheic high plateau separating the Eastern and Western cordillera of the Andes. The salt flat is characterized by an alternating sequence of evaporate layers mainly consisting of halite and lacustrine mud layers up to a depth of at least 220 m, whereby the stratification is ascribed to the alternation of dry and humid climatic phases during the Quaternary. With estimated 7 Mio tonnes in brine, the salt lake is considered the world’s largest Li deposit. Knowledge About genesis and distribution of Li is essential for the possible extraction of Li and other valuable elements from the brine in a commercial scale, which is the driving force for the Investigation of hydrochemical properties of the Salar de Uyuni. Practical work comprised the sampling of brines from drilled wells and along transects, salts from the surface, sampling of streams, rocks and sediments in the catchment, as well as chemical and isotopical analyses. The surface catchment, delineated with ArcGIS, has a size of 63,000 km² and is mainly characterized by volcanic deposits as ignimbrites, and unconsolidated sediments, salt deposits and lacustrine material in widespread flood plains. The pores of the upper salt crust, which shows a varying thickness of 2-11 m, are filled with a saturated NaCl brine rich in Mg, K, Li and B. The distribution of Li along the salt lake is inhomogeneous, with two regions of significantly higher concentrations up to 1.5 g/L in the southern part near the delta of the main inflow Río Grande and in the northern part, compared to an average of 0.3-0.4 g/L in brine. The age of brines from the upper salt crust was determined to 6,200 - 13,340 years, corresponding in age to the surrounding evaporates and showing a stable stratification with depth. However, a local mixing of the brine with freshwater feeding from groundwater Aquifers especially near the shore of the salar was observed by the analysis of δ2H and δ18O in the brines. The distribution of stable isotopes also shows the strong influence of evaporation, even smaller tributaries feeding the Río Grande are enriched in heavy isotopes of H and O. Element to bromine ratios in the brine showed that Li, K and Mg are not removed from solution by the formation of precipitates, but are rather released from clay minerals by ion exchange leading to their enrichment in the pore brine. Analyzed rocks, mostly of rhyolitic and dacitic type, show moderate lithium concentrations in the range of 4 to 37 mg/kg. Different types of digestion revealed that rock types occurring in the Salar de Uyuni catchment are a substantial supplier of lithium by the intensive physical and chemical weathering due to the specific environmental conditions. Increased Lithium concentrations in rock and sediment samples from the volcano flanks south of the salar indicate, that the southern catchment is the main supplier of lithium to the salt lake. The enrichment of lithium could also be observed by the analysis of superficial salts from the upper crust. Salt efflorescences are significantly enriched regarding Li, K, Mg and other Ions compared to the surface within the polygons. The enrichment of Li in brine occurs all-Season along shrinkage cracks at polygon borders, where brine rises up, water evaporates and NaCl precipitates, leaving a solution even more concentrated in Li and other solutes as Br, B, K and Mg. In conclusion, the accumulation of lithium in the brine of the Salar de Uyuni results from the combination of various site-specific circumstances, which are analyzed and discussed in the present thesis. Mit einer Größe von ~10.000 km² ist der Salar de Uyuni der größte Salzsee der Welt. Er befindet sich auf einer Höhe von 3.653 m im Süden des bolivianischen Altiplano, einer abflusslosen Hochebene zwischen der Ost- und Westkordillere der Anden. Der Salzsee besteht bis zu einer Tiefe von mind. 220 m aus einer Wechselfolge evaporitischer Schichten (hauptsächlich halitisch) und lakustrinen Tonschichten, wobei die Schichtung auf den Wechsel von trockenen und feuchten klimatischen Phasen während des Quartärs zurückzuführen ist. Mit einer geschätzten Menge von 7 Mio. t gilt der Salzsee als die gegenwärtig größte Li-Ressource der Welt. Das Wissen über Genese und Verteilung von Li ist grundlegend für eine mögliche Gewinnung von Li und anderen Elementen in kommerziellem Maßstab, worin sich die Motivitation für die Untersuchung hydrochemischer Eigenschaften des Salar de Uyuni begründet. Praktische Tätigkeiten umfassten die Probenahme von Solen aus eigens gebohrten Brunnen und entlang von Transekten, die Entnahme von Oberflächensalzen, die Beprobung von Zuflüssen, Gesteinen und Sedimenten im Einzugsgebiet, sowie deren chemische und isotopische Analytik. Das oberflächliche, mittels ArcGIS ermittelte Einzugsgebiet, weist eine Größe von 63.000 km² auf und besteht hauptsächlich aus vulkanischen Gesteinen wie Ignimbriten und unverfestigten Ablagerungen, Salzausblühungen und lakustrinen Sedimenten in ausgeprägten Überschwemmungsebenen. Die Poren der obersten, zwischen 2 und 11 m mächtigen Salzschicht, sind mit einer an NaCl gesättigten Salzlösung, die reich an Mg, K, Li und B ist, gefüllt. Die inhomogene Verteilung von Li im Salzsee weist zwei Bereiche signifikant erhöhter Konzentrationen von bis zu 1,5 g/L auf, und zwar im südlichen Einmündungsbereich des Hauptzuflusses Río Grande und im Nordosten etwa 20 km von der Küste entfernt, verglichen mit einem durchschnittlichen Gehalt von 0,3-0,4 g/L in der Sole. Das Alter der Solen der obersten Salzkruste wurde auf 6.200 – 13.340 Jahre bestimmt, was dem Alter der umgebenden Evaporite entspricht und eine stabile Schichtung aufweist. Allerdings weist die Analytik von δ2H und δ18O auch auf eine lokale Vermischung der Sole mit Frischwasser aus ufernahen Aquiferen hin. Die Verteilung der stabilen Isotope δ²H und δ18O deutet auf einen signifikanten Einfluss der Verdunstung auf die Entwicklung der Porenlösung hin, denn auch kleinere Zuflüsse zum Salar sind angereichert an 2H und 18O. Das Verhältnis verschiedener Elemente zu Brom zeigt, dass Li, K und Mg weniger durch die Ausfällung von Salzen aus der Lösung entfernt, sondern eher durch Ionenaustausch aus Tonmineralen freigesetzt und folglich in der Sole angereichert werden. Die analysierten Gesteine, hauptsächlich rhyolitischen und dazitischen Typs, weisen moderate Lithiumkonzentrationen von 4 – 37 mg/kg auf. Die Anwendung verschiedener Aufschlüsse zeigte, dass die im Einzugsgebiet des Salar de Uyuni vorkommenden Gesteinstypen aufgrund der intensiven physikalischen und chemischen Verwitterung unter den spezifischen Umweltbedingungen eine wesentliche Quelle des Lithiums im Salzsee sind. Erhöhte Li-Konzentrationen in Gesteinen und Sedimenten der vulkanischen Flanken südlich des Salars deuten auf das südliche Einzugsgebiet als hauptsächlichen Zulieferer für Li hin. Die Anreicherung von Li wurde auch mittels der Untersuchung der Salze der obersten Kruste bestätigt. Im Vergleich zur Oberfläche innerhalb der Polygone sind die Salzausblühungen entlang der Polygonränder signifikant an Li, K, Mg und anderen Ionen angereichert. Die Anreicherung von Li geschieht ganzjährig entlang der Schrumpfungsrisse an Polygonrändern, indem die Sole durch kapillare Kräfte aufsteigt, Wasser verdunstet und NaCl ausfällt. Schließlich bleibt eine an Li und anderen Ionen wie Br, B, K und Mg noch stärker aufkonzentrierte Lösung zurück. Schlussfolgernd resultiert die Akkumulation von Lithium in der Porenlösung aus der Kombination zahlreicher standortspezifischer Faktoren, welche innerhalb der vorliegenden Arbeit untersucht und bewertet wurden.
