Following the discovery of Cussac Cave (Le Buisson-de-Cadouin, Dordogne) in 2000 and its expertise by a first group of researchers (N. Aujoulat and collaborators), the services of the Ministry of Culture adopted a rigorous heritage policy to protect the cave, ensure its security and to acquire the property on which it is located in order to create an archaeological reserve that would be the property of the State. Grâce à la « révolution numérique », les chercheurs ont désormais accès à de nouveaux outils d’exploration qui ont considérablement renouvelé les pratiques scientifiques traditionnelles. L’archéologie a pleinement intégré cette ère du virtuel. Ce recueil explore les applications des techniques de l’imagerie numérique, comme la photogrammétrie, le scanner laser, la microtomodentométrie, la modélisation tridimensionnelle et les systèmes d’information 3D, ou la réalité virtuelle et augmentée. L’introduction de l’imagerie numérique a également changé la diffusion des connaissances archéologiques et fait évoluer la muséographie. Les travaux présentés concernent des vestiges ostéoarchéologiques humains et animaux, des sites paléolithiques et des grottes ornées, ainsi que des sites proche-orientaux mis en danger par les conflits actuels. Le Congrès national des sociétés historiques et scientifiques rassemble chaque année universitaires, membres de sociétés savantes et jeunes chercheurs. Ce recueil est issu de travaux présentés lors du 144e Congrès sur le thème « Le réel et le virtuel ».

Une fois rappelés les résultats étonnants accordant aux constructions de la grotte de Bruniquel (Tarn-et-Garonne) un âge Paléolithique moyen ancien, donc néandertalien (MIS 6), nous résumons d’un point de vue patrimonial, archéologique ou méthodologique nos interventions pluri- ou interdisciplinaires sur ce site désormais classé au titre des monuments historiques. La contrainte d’accès au site, les paramètres taphonomiques et l’originalité du matériau de construction sollicité (la calcite) ajoutent à la complexité méthodologique de l’opération d’étude qui est toujours en cours. Once we have recalled the surprising results obtained from the constructions of the Bruniquel cave, an Early Middle Palaeolithic (EMP) age, therefore of Neanderthal origin (MIS 6), we summarise from a heritage, archaeological and methodological point of view our multi-disciplinary or interdisciplinary interventions on this specific site, now protected as a historic monument. The constrained access to the site, the taphonomical parameters and the originality of the building material used (calcite) all complicate the methodological advances of the archaeological research that is still in progress.

Dès la découverte en 1994 de la grotte Chauvet-Pont d'Arc, ses représentations pariétales attribuées à une phase ancienne du Paléolithique récent, aux alentours de 36 000 ans ont suscité une curiosité et une attention internationales. Conscient des enjeux importants et multiples soulevés par cette découverte, le ministère de la Culture a immédiatement mis en œuvre des moyens exceptionnels de conservation et d'étude de la cavité. La Monographie de la grotte Chauvet-Pont d'Arc est la publication officielle appelée à rendre compte de l'ensemble des recherches pluridisciplinaires et pluri-institutionnelles soutenues par le ministère de la Culture, menées dans la grotte depuis 1997. Son premier tome, Atlas de la grotte Chauvet-Pont d'Arc, a pour objectif d'offrir au lecteur la possibilité de circuler dans la grotte par l'intermédiaire d'une riche iconographie, d'observer par lui-même et de comprendre les paysages souterrains dans lesquels s'inscrivent les œuvres pariétales et les vestiges archéologiques. Les quatre parties de l’Atlas (méthodologie, contexte, cartographie des sols, conservation) sont construites autour des cartes qui rendent compte des différentes acquisitions, analyses et représentations des données permises par ces vingt années de recherche. Ouvrage exceptionnel au service d’une recherche interdisciplinaire exceptionnelle, l’Atlas de la grotte Chauvet-Pont d’Arc propose, sous la forme d’un atlas classique de nombreuses approches et conceptions spatiales novatrices : approche spatialisée d’un lieu d’activité et de créativité humaines, approche spatiale d’un site archéologique, découpage spatial d’une entité géographique du monde naturel qui est aussi un lieu d’expression symbolique collectif. La lecture des vestiges est soutenue par une abondante illustration en couleurs, incluant des restitutions fondées sur un modèle numérique de terrain. Enfin, des légendes en anglais et un résumé détaillé en tête de chaque chapitre garantissent au public international un accès aisé à la démonstration. From the moment the Chauvet-Pont d’Arc Cave was discovered, in 1994 in Ardèche (France), the art of its walls –attributed to an early phase of the late Paleolithic, around 36,000 years ago- inspired international curiosity and attention. Conscious of the multiple and significant implications of this discovery, the French Ministry of Culture immediately devoted exceptional ressources to the conservation and study of the cave. The Monography de la grotte Chauvet-Pont d’Arc is the official publication of all multidisciplinary and multi-institutional research supported by the Ministry of Culture and conducted in the cave since 1997. The aim of this first volume, the Atlas de la grotte Chauvet-Pont d’Arc is to enable readers to circulate in the cave via the intermediary of a rich iconography, and to observe and understand the underground landscapes in which the cave art and archaeological remains are located. The four parts of the Atlas (methodology, context, floor maps, conservation) are constructed around maps that represent the various data collections, analyses and representations made during the last twenty years of research. An exceptional publication devoted to exceptional multidisciplinary research, the Atlas de la grotte Chauvet-Pont d’Arc offers, in the form of a classic atlas, numerous innovative spatial approaches and concepts: spatial approach to a place of human activity and creativity, spatial approach to an archaeological site, spatial division of a geographic entity of the natural world, which is also a place of collective symbolic espression. » Abundant color illustrations enhance the written presentation of the archaeological remains, including reconstructions based on a digital field model. Finally, the English translation of the figure legends and detailed summaries of each chapter enable international readers clear access to the descriptions, arguments, and interpretations.

Although quantitative isotope data from speleothems has been used to evaluate isotope-enabled model simulations, currently no consensus exists regarding the most appropriate methodology through which to achieve this. A number of modelling groups will be running isotope-enabled palaeoclimate simulations in the framework of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6, so it is timely to evaluate different approaches to using the speleothem data for data-model comparisons. Here, we illustrate this using 456 globally distributed speleothem delta O-18 records from an updated version of the Speleothem Isotopes Synthesis and Analysis (SISAL) database and palaeoclimate simulations generated using the ECHAM5-wiso isotope-enabled atmospheric circulation model. We show that the SISAL records reproduce the first-order spatial patterns of isotopic variability in the modern day, strongly supporting the application of this dataset for evaluating model-derived isotope variability into the past. However, the discontinuous nature of many speleothem records complicates the process of procuring large numbers of records if data-model comparisons are made using the traditional approach of comparing anomalies between a control period and a given palaeoclimate experiment. To circumvent this issue, we illustrate techniques through which the absolute isotope values during any time period could be used for model evaluation. Specifically, we show that speleothem isotope records allow an assessment of a model's ability to simulate spatial isotopic trends. Our analyses provide a protocol for using speleothem isotope data for model evaluation, including screening the observations to take into account the impact of speleothem mineralogy on delta O-18 values, the optimum period for the modern observational baseline and the selection of an appropriate time window for creating means of the isotope data for palaeo-time-slices.
