Abstract

This paper discusses the problem of missing datasets for analysing and exhibiting the role of women in STEM with a particular focus on computer science (CS), artificial intelligence (AI) and data science (DS). It discusses the problem in a concrete case of a global south country (i.e., Mexico). Our study aims to point out missing datasets to identify invisible information regarding women and the implications when studying the gender gap in different STEM disciplines. Missing datasets about women in STEM show that the first step to understanding gender imbalance in STEM is building women’s history by “completing” existing datasets.

Abstract

Bottom-up energy models are considered essential tools to support policy design of electricity end-use efficiency. However, in the literature, no study analyzes their contribution to support policy design of electricity end-use efficiency, the modeling techniques used to build them, and the policy instruments supported by them. This systematic review fills that gap by identifying the current capability of bottom-up energy models to support specific policy instruments. In the research, we review 192 publications from January 2015 to June 2020 to finally select 20 for further examination. The articles are analyzed quantitatively in terms of techniques, model characteristics, and applied policies. The findings of the study reveal that: (1) bottom-up energy models contribute to the support of policy design of electricity end-use efficiency with the application of specific best practices (2) bottom-up energy models do not provide a portfolio of analytical methods which constraint their capability to support policy design (3) bottom-up energy models for residential buildings have limited policy support and (4) bottom-up energy models’ design reveals a lack of inclusion of key energy efficiency metrics to support decision-making. This study’s findings can help researchers and energy modelers address these limitations and create new models following best practices.

Abstract

El objetivo principal de este trabajo es el procesamiento de grandes volúmenes de información, conocidos como big data. Presentamos la implementación del algoritmo repartition join para realizar la operación join en un conjunto grande de datos. El algoritmo fue programado bajo el modelo de programación Map Reduce. Implementar un join en el contexto de big data resulta ser complejo y costoso; por ello, apoyados en la plataforma Hadoop, herramienta que ofrece las utilidades necesarias para el manejo de grandes volúmenes de información, analizamos el comportamiento del algoritmo para evaluar su rendimiento. El algoritmo planteado se evaluó en un clúster conformado por tres nodos. Los resultados de ejecución se analizaron para su posterior uso en aplicaciones con datos reales.
