Quantum correlations, like entanglement, represent the characteristic trait of quantum mechanics, and pose essential issues and challenges to the interpretation of this pillar of modern physics. Although quantum correlations are largely acknowledged as a major resource to achieve quantum advantage in many tasks of quantum technologies, their full quantitative description and the axiomatic basis underlying them are still under investigation. Previous works suggested that the origin of nonlocal correlations is grounded in principles capturing (from outside the quantum formalism) the essence of quantum uncertainty. In particular, the recently-introduced principle of Relativistic Independence gave rise to a new bound intertwining local and nonlocal correlations. Here we test such a bound by realizing together sequential and joint weak measurements on entangled photon pairs, allowing to simultaneously quantify both local and nonlocal correlations by measuring incompatible observables on the same quantum system without collapsing its state, a task typically forbidden in the traditional (projective) quantum measurement framework. In this study, we demonstrate the possibility to protect, with Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), a critical infrastructure as the fiber-based one used for time and frequency (TF) dissemination service. The proposed technique allows to disseminate secure and precise TF signals between two fiber-opticconnected locations, on a critical infrastructure, using both QKD and White Rabbit technique. This secure exchange allows the secret sharing of time information between two parties for the synchronization of distant clocks with the highest stability and traceable to the Italian time scale. When encrypted, time signals would reveal to a third party no useful information about the synchronization status, providing a time stability two orders of magnitude worsened.

Recently, it has been proposed a new method [arXiv:2405.21029] to detect quantum gravity effects, based on generating gravitational entanglement between two nano-diamonds with Nitrogen-Vacancy defects, in a magnetically trapped configuration. Here we analyse in detail the proposed experimental setup, with a particular focus on implementing the detection of the gravitationally-induced entanglement using an optical readout based on measuring the position of the nano-diamonds and its complementary basis. Quantum theory is notoriously counterintuitive, and yet remains entirely self-consistent when applied universally. Here we uncover a new manifestation of its unusual consequences. We demonstrate, theoretically and experimentally (by means of polarization-encoded single-photon qubits), that Heisenberg's uncertainty principle leads to the impossibility of stringing together logical deductions about outcomes of consecutive non-compatible measurements. This phenomenon resembles the geometry of a Penrose triangle, where each corner is locally consistent while the global structure is impossible. Besides this, we show how overlooking this non-trivial logical structure leads to the erroneous possibility of distinguishing non-orthogonal states with a single measurement.

Bell inequalities represent a milestone for contemporary Physics, both for quantum foundations investigation and technological applications (e.g., quantum communication and entanglement certification). Although loophole-free tests have been recently performed, a strong debate is still ongoing on the actual meaning of Bell inequality tests, for example on the possible additional hypotheses (end eventual loopholes) to be included in Bell's theorem, as well as on the implications for certain interpretations of quantum mechanics. A recent work [S. Virz\`i et al., Quantum Sci. Technol. 9, 045027 (2024)] challenges some of the statements appeared in this debate, achieving for the first time an experimental estimation of the entire Bell-CHSH parameter from a single entangled pair thanks to a weak-interaction-based measurement approach. Here we analyse the implications of this result for quantum mechanics foundations investigation, illustrating how it can tackle some of the aforementioned interpretations of Bell inequality tests and, more in general, of quantum mechanics itself.

We present an advanced quantum super-resolution imaging technique based on photon statistics measurement and its accurate modeling. Our reconstruction algorithm adapts to any kind of non-Poissonian emitters, outperforming the corresponding classical SOFI method. It offers sub-diffraction resolution improvement that scales with the $\sqrt{j}$, where $j$ is the highest order central moments of the photocounts. More remarkably, in combination with structured illumination a linear improvement with j can be reached. Through simulations and experiments, we prove our method's clear superiority over traditional SOFI, especially in low excitation light conditions, providing a promising avenue for non-invasive super-resolution microscopy of delicate samples.

In this paper, we present a new experimental apparatus for the measurement of the detection efficiency of free-space single-photon detectors based on the substitution method. For the first time, we extend the analysis to account for the wavelength dependence introduced by the transmissivity of the optical window in front of the detector's active area. Our method involves measuring the detector's response at different wavelengths and comparing it to a calibrated reference detector. This allows us to accurately quantify the efficiency variations due to the optical window's transmissivity. The results provide a comprehensive understanding of the wavelength-dependent efficiency, which is crucial for optimizing the performance of single-photon detectors in various applications, including quantum communication and photonics research. This characterization technique offers a significant advancement in the precision and reliability of single-photon detection efficiency measurements.

Unifying quantum theory and general relativity is the holy grail of contemporary physics. Nonetheless, the lack of experimental evidence driving this process led to a plethora of mathematical models with a substantial impossibility of discriminating among them or even establishing if gravity really needs to be quantized or if, vice versa, quantum mechanics must be "gravitized" at some scale. Recently, it has been proposed that the observation of the generation of entanglement by gravitational interaction, could represent a breakthrough demonstrating the quantum nature of gravity. A few experimental proposals have been advanced in this sense, but the extreme technological requirements (e.g., the need for free-falling gravitationally-interacting masses in a quantum superposition state) make their implementation still far ahead. Here we present a feasibility study for a table-top nanodiamond-based interferometer eventually enabling easier and less resource-demanding quantum gravity tests. With respect to the aforementioned proposals, by relying on quantum superpositions of steady massive (mesoscopic) objects our interferometer may allow exploiting just small-range electromagnetic fields (much easier to implement and control) and, at the same time, the re-utilization of the massive quantum probes exploited, inevitably lost in free-falling interferometric schemes., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

The impact of noise sources in real-world implementations of Twin-Field Quantum Key Distribution (TF-QKD) protocols is investigated, focusing on phase noise from photon sources and connecting fibers. This work emphasizes the role of laser quality, network topology, fiber length, arm balance, and detector performance in determining key rates. Remarkably, it reveals that the leading TF-QKD protocols are similarly affected by phase noise despite different mechanisms. This study demonstrates duty cycle improvements of over a factor of two through narrow-linewidth lasers and phase-control techniques, highlighting the potential synergy with high-precision time/frequency distribution services. Ultrastable lasers, evolving toward integration and miniaturization, offer promise for agile TF-QKD implementations on existing networks. Techniques based on classical and quantum correlations in light beams, such as ghost imaging, allow us to overcome many limitations of conventional imaging and sensing protocols. Despite their advantages, applications of such techniques are often limited in practical scenarios where the position and the longitudinal extension of the target object are unknown. In this work, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel imaging technique, named Light Field Ghost Imaging, that exploits light correlations and light field imaging principles to enable going beyond the limitations of ghost imaging in a wide range of applications. Notably, our technique removes the requirement to have prior knowledge of the object distance allowing the possibility of refocusing in post-processing, as well as performing 3D imaging while retaining all the benefits of ghost imaging protocols.

Quantum entanglement and squeezing have significantly improved phase estimation and imaging in interferometric settings beyond the classical limits. However, for a wide class of non-interferometric phase imaging/retrieval methods vastly used in the classical domain e.g., ptychography and diffractive imaging, a demonstration of quantum advantage is still missing. Here, we fill this gap by exploiting entanglement to enhance imaging of a pure phase object in a non-interferometric setting, only measuring the phase effect on the free-propagating field. This method, based on the so-called "transport of intensity equation", is quantitative since it provides the absolute value of the phase without prior knowledge of the object and operates in wide-field mode, so it does not need time-consuming raster scanning. Moreover, it does not require spatial and temporal coherence of the incident light. Besides a general improvement of the image quality at a fixed number of photons irradiated through the object, resulting in better discrimination of small details, we demonstrate a clear reduction of the uncertainty in the quantitative phase estimation. The challenge of pattern recognition is to invoke a strategy that can accurately extract features of a dataset and classify its samples. In realistic scenarios this dataset may be a physical system from which we want to retrieve information, such as in the readout of optical classical memories. The theoretical and experimental development of quantum reading has demonstrated that the readout of optical memories can be dramatically enhanced through the use of quantum resources (namely entangled input-states) over that of the best classical strategies. However, the practicality of this quantum advantage hinges upon the scalability of quantum reading, and up to now its experimental demonstration has been limited to individual cells. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time quantum advantage in the multi-cell problem of pattern recognition. Through experimental realizations of digits from the MNIST handwritten digit dataset, and the application of advanced classical post-processing, we report the use of entangled probe states and photon-counting to achieve quantum advantage in classification error over that achieved with classical resources, confirming that the advantage gained through quantum sensors can be sustained throughout pattern recognition and complex post-processing. This motivates future developments of quantum-enhanced pattern recognition of bosonic-loss within complex domains.

Bell inequalities are one of the cornerstones of quantum foundations, and fundamental tools for quantum technologies. Recently, the scientific community worldwide has put a lot of effort towards them, which culminated with loophole-free experiments. Nonetheless, none of the experimental tests so far was able to extract information on the full inequality from each entangled pair, since the wave function collapse forbids performing, on the same quantum state, all the measurements needed for evaluating the entire Bell parameter. We present here the first single-pair Bell inequality test, able to obtain a Bell parameter value for every entangled pair detected. This is made possible by exploiting sequential weak measurements, allowing to measure non-commuting observables in sequence on the same state, on each entangled particle. Such an approach not only grants unprecedented measurement capability, but also removes the need to choose between different measurement bases, intrinsically eliminating the freedom-of-choice loophole and stretching the concept of counterfactual-definiteness (since it allows measuring in the otherwise not-chosen bases). We also demonstrate how, after the Bell parameter measurement, the pair under test still presents a noteworthy amount of entanglement, providing evidence of the absence of (complete) wave function collapse and allowing to exploit this quantum resource for further protocols., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures

We introduce a novel technique for the reconstruction of multimode optical fields, based on simultaneously exploiting both the generalized Glauber's $K^{th}$-order correlation function $g^{(K)}$ and a recently proposed anti-correlation function (dubbed $\theta^{(K)}$) which is resilient to Poissonian noise. We experimentally demonstrate that this method yields mode reconstructions with higher fidelity with respect to those obtained with reconstruction methods based only on $g^{(K)}$'s, even requiring less "a priori" information. The reliability and versatility of our technique make it suitable for a widespread use in real applications of optical quantum measurement, from quantum information to quantum metrology, especially when one needs to characterize ensembles of single-photon emitters in the presence of background noise (due, for example, to residual excitation laser, stray light, or unwanted fluorescence)., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a general method allowing us to unravel microscopic noise events that affect a continuous quantum variable. Such unraveling is achieved by frequent measurements of a discrete variable coupled to the continuous one. The experimental realization involves photons traversing a noisy channel. There, their polarization, whose coupling to the photons spatial wavepacket is subjected to stochastic noise, is frequently measured in the quantum Zeno regime. The measurements not only preserve the polarization state, but also enable the recording of the full noise statistics from the spatially-resolved detection of the photons emerging from the channel. We provide the first systematic characterization of the structural and photoluminescence properties of optically active defect centers fabricated upon implantation of 30-100 keV Mg+ ions in artificial diamond. The structural configurations of Mg-related defects were studied by the emission channeling technique for 27Mg implantations performed both at room-temperature and 800 {\deg}C, which allowed the identification of a major fraction of Mg atoms (~30-42%) in sites which are compatible with the split-vacancy structure of the MgV complex. A smaller fraction of Mg atoms (~13-17%) was found on substitutional sites. The photoluminescence emission was investigated both at the ensemble and individual defect level in a temperature range comprised between 5 K and 300 K, offering a detailed picture of the MgV-related emission properties and revealing the occurrence of previously unreported spectral features. The optical excitability of the MgV center was also studied as a function of the optical excitation wavelength enabling to identify the optimal conditions for photostable and intense emission. The results are discussed in the context of the preliminary experimental data and the theoretical models available in the literature, with appealing perspectives for the utilization of the tunable properties of the MgV center for quantum information processing applications., Comment: 7 figures

Single-photon detectors are a pivotal component in photonic quantum technologies. A precise and comprehensive calibration of the intrinsic detection efficiency is of utmost importance to ensure the proper evaluation of the performance in view of the specific technological application of interest, such as the protection against security breaches in quantum cryptographic solutions. Here we report on a systematic study on and comprehensive analysis of the estimation of the intrinsic detection efficiency of two commercial single-photon detectors based on single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) for various mean photon numbers and at high laser pulse repetition rates using different techniques. We observed an unexpected and signifucant drop in intrinsic detection efficiency at detection rates of 10 % and higher relative to the maximum detection rate. It is demonstrated that for data analysis a statistical model for the detection rate conveniently can be used if no timestamped data are available. We conclude that the full characterization of single-photon detectors used in critical applications should include the sensitivity of their intrinsic detection efficiency to high event rates., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures

Quantum correlation, such as entanglement and squeezing have shown to improve phase estimation in interferometric setups on one side, and non-interferometric imaging scheme of amplitude object on the other. In the last case, quantum correlation among a pair of beams leads to a sub-shot-noise readout of the image intensity pattern, where weak details, otherwise hidden in the noise, can be appreciated. In this paper we propose a technique which exploits entanglement to enhance quantitative phase retrieval of an object in a non-interferometric setting, i.e only measuring the propagated intensity pattern after interaction with the object. The method exploits existing technology, it operates in wide field mode, so does not require time consuming raster scanning and can operate with small spatial coherence of the incident field. This protocol can find application in optical microscopy and X-ray imaging, reducing the photon dose necessary to achieve a fixed signal-to-noise ratio.

We report a systematic photoluminescence (PL) investigation of the spectral emission properties of individual optical defects fabricated in diamond upon ion implantation and annealing. Three spectral lines at 620 nm, 631 nm, and 647 nm are identified and attributed to the SnV center due to their occurrence in the PL spectra of the very same single-photon emitting defects. We show that the relative occurrence of the three spectral features can be modified by oxidizing the sample surface following thermal annealing. We finally report the relevant emission properties of each class of individual emitters, including the excited state emission lifetime and the emission intensity saturation parameters., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

We report on the systematic characterization of the optical properties of diamond color centers based on Pb impurities. An ensemble photoluminescence analysis of their spectral emission was performed at different excitation wavelengths in the 405-520 nm range and at different temperatures in the 4-300 K range. The series of observed spectral features consist of different emission lines associated with Pb-related defects. Finally, a room-temperature investigation of single-photon emitters under 490.5 nm laser excitation is reported, revealing different spectral signatures with respect to those already reported under 514 nm excitation. This work represents a substantial progress with respect to previous studies on Pb-related color centers, both in the attribution of an articulated series of spectral features and in the understanding of the formation process of this type of defect, thus clarifying the potential of this system for high-impact applications in quantum technologies.

In quantum communication systems, the precise estimation of the detector's response to the incoming light is necessary to avoid security breaches. The typical working regime uses a free-running single-photon avalanche diode in combination with attenuated laser pulses at telecom wavelength for encoding information. We demonstrate the validity of an analytical model for this regime which considers the effects of dark counts and dead time on the measured count rate. For the purpose of gaining a better understanding of these effects, the photon detections were separated from the dark counts via a software-induced gating mechanism. The model was verified by experimental data for mean photon numbers covering three orders of magnitude as well as for laser repetition frequencies below and above the inverse dead time. Consequently, our model would be of interest for predicting the detector response not only in the field of quantum communications, but also in any other quantum physics experiment where high detection rates are needed.

We present a detailed description of the experiment realising for the first time a protective measurement, a novel measurement protocol which combines weak interactions with a ``protection mechanism'' preserving the measured state coherence during the whole measurement process. Furthermore, protective measurement allows finding the expectation value of an observable, i.e. an inherently statistical quantity, by measuring a single particle, without the need of any statistics. We show that, by utilising temporal quantum correlations as expressed by pseudo-density operators (PDOs), it is possible to recover formally the standard quantum dynamical evolution as a sequence of teleportations in time. We demonstrate that any completely positive evolution can be formally reconstructed by teleportation with different temporally correlated states. This provides a different interpretation of maximally correlated PDOs, as resources to induce quantum time-evolution. Furthermore, we note that the possibility of this protocol stems from the strict formal correspondence between spatial and temporal entanglement in quantum theory. We proceed to demonstrate experimentally this correspondence, by showing a multipartite violation of generalised temporal and spatial Bell inequalities and verifying agreement with theoretical predictions to a high degree of accuracy, in high-quality photon qubits., Comment: preprint

We experimentally demonstrate, for the first time, noise diagnostics by repeated quantum measurements. Specifically, we establish the ability of a single photon, subjected to random polarisation noise, to diagnose non-Markovian temporal correlations of such a noise process. In the frequency domain, these noise correlations correspond to colored noise spectra, as opposed to the ones related to Markovian, white noise. Both the noise spectrum and its corresponding temporal correlations are diagnosed by probing the photon by means of frequent, (partially-)selective polarisation measurements. Our main result is the experimental demonstration that noise with positive temporal correlations corresponds to our single photon undergoing a dynamical regime enabled by the quantum Zeno effect (QZE), while noise characterized by negative (anti-) correlations corresponds to regimes associated with the anti-Zeno effect (AZE). This demonstration opens the way to a new kind of noise spectroscopy based on QZE and AZE in photon (or other single-particle) state probing.

The protocol of quantum reading refers to the quantum enhanced retrieval of information from an optical memory, whose generic cell stores a bit of information in two possible lossy channels. In the following we analyze the case of a particular class of optical receiver, based on photon counting measurement, since they can be particularly simple in view of real applications. We show that a quantum advantage is achievable when a transmitter based on two-mode squeezed vacuum (TMSV) states is combined with a photon counting receiver, and we experimentally confirm it. In this paper, after introducing some theoretical background, we focus on the experimental realisation, describing the data collection and the data analysis in detail.

Optical quantum interferometry represents the oldest example of quantum metrology and it is at the source of quantum technologies. The original squeezed state scheme is now a significant element of the last version of gravitational wave detectors and various additional uses have been proposed. Further quantum enhanced schemes, from SU(1,1) interferometer to twin beam correlation interferometry, have also reached the stage of proof of principle experiments enlarging the field of experimental quantum interferometry and paving the way to several further applications ranging from Planck scale signals search to small effects detection. We introduce a protocol addressing the conformance test problem, which consists in determining whether a process under test conforms to a reference one. We consider a process to be characterized by the set of end-product it produces, which is generated according to a given probability distribution. We formulate the problem in the context of hypothesis testing and consider the specific case in which the objects can be modeled as pure loss channels. We demonstrate theoretically that a simple quantum strategy, using readily available resources and measurement schemes in the form of two-mode squeezed vacuum and photon-counting, can outperform any classical strategy. We experimentally implement this protocol, exploiting optical twin beams, validating our theoretical results, and demonstrating that, in this task, there is a quantum advantage in a realistic setting.

Quantum mechanics allows the distribution of intrinsically secure encryption keys by optical means. Twin-field quantum key distribution is the most promising technique for its implementation on long-distance fibers, but requires stabilizing the optical length of the communication channels between parties. In proof-of-principle experiments based on spooled fibers, this was achieved by interleaving the quantum communication with periodical adjustment frames. In this approach, longer duty cycles for the key streaming come at the cost of a looser control of channel length, and a successful key-transfer using this technique in a real world remains a significant challenge. Using interferometry techniques derived from frequency metrology, we developed a solution for the simultaneous key streaming and channel length control, and demonstrate it on a 206 km field-deployed fiber with 65 dB loss. Our technique reduces the quantum-bit-error-rate contributed by channel length variations to <1%, representing an effective solution for real-world quantum communications.

The issue of irreversibility in a universe with time-reversal-symmetric laws is a central problem in physics. % , and, in particular, to statistical mechanics, information theory and quantum thermodynamics. In this letter, we discuss for the first time how irreversibility can emerge within the recently proposed constructor theory framework. Here irreversibility is expressed as the requirement that a task is possible, while its inverse is not. In particular, we demonstrate that this irreversibility is compatible with quantum theory's time reversal symmetric laws, by exploiting a specific model, based on the universal quantum homogeniser, realised experimentally with high-quality single-photon qubits., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Understanding the human brain remains one of the most significant challenges of the 21st century. As theoretical studies continue to improve the description of the complex mechanisms that regulate biological processes, in parallel numerous experiments are conducted to enrich or verify these theoretical predictions and with the aim of extrapolating more accurate models. In the field of magnetometers for biological application, among the various sensors proposed for this purpose, NV centers have emerged as a promising solution due to their perfect biocompatibility and the possibility of being positioned in close proximity and even inside the cell, allowing a nanometric spatial resolution. There are still many difficulties that must be overcome in order to obtain both spatial resolution and sensitivity capable of revealing the very weak biological electromagnetic fields generated by neurons (or other cells). However, over the last few years, significant improvements have been achieved in this direction, thanks to the use of innovative techniques, which allow us to hope for an early application of these sensors for the measurement of fields such as the one generated by cardiac tissue, if not, in perspective, for the nerve fibers fields. The final goal of quantum hypothesis testing is to achieve quantum advantage over all possible classical strategies. In the protocol of quantum reading this advantage is achieved for information retrieval from an optical memory, whose generic cell stores a bit of information in two possible lossy channels. For this protocol, we show, theoretically and experimentally, that quantum advantage is obtained by practical photon-counting measurements combined with a simple maximum-likelihood decision. In particular, we show that this receiver combined with an entangled two-mode squeezed vacuum source is able to outperform any strategy based on statistical mixtures of coherent states for the same mean number of input photons. Our experimental findings demonstrate that quantum entanglement and simple optics are able to enhance the readout of digital data, paving the way to real applications of quantum reading and with potential applications for any other model that is based on the binary discrimination of bosonic loss., Comment: 6 pages. 4 figures

Current definitions of both squeezing operator and squeezed vacuum state are critically examined on the grounds of consistency with the underlying su(1,1) algebraic structure. Accordingly, the generalized coherent states for su(1,1) in its Schwinger two-photon realization are proposed as squeezed states. The physical implication of this assumption is that two additional degrees of freedom become available for the control of quantum optical systems. The resulting physical predictions are evaluated in terms of quadrature squeezing and photon statistics, while the application to a Mach-Zehnder interferometer is discussed to show the emergence of nonclassical regions, characterized by negative values of Mandel's parameter, which cannot be anticipated by the current formulation, and then outline future possible use in quantum technologies.

Quantum correlations become formidable tools for beating classical capacities of measurement. Preserving these advantages in practical systems, where experimental imperfections are unavoidable, is a challenge of the utmost importance. Here we propose and realize a quantum ghost imaging protocol able to compensate for the detrimental effect of detection noise and losses. This represents an important improvement as quantum correlations allow low brightness imaging, desirable for reducing the absorption dose. In particular, we develop a comprehensive model starting from a ghost imaging scheme elaborated for bright thermal light, known as differential ghost imaging and particularly suitable in the relevant case of faint or sparse objects. We perform the experiment using SPDC light in microscopic configuration. The image is reconstructed exploiting non-classical intensity correlation rather than photon pairs detection coincidences. On one side we validate the theoretical model and on the other we show the applicability of this technique by reconstructing a biological object with 5 micrometers resolution.

Recently, the fast development of quantum technologies led to the need for tools allowing the characterization of quantum resources. In particular, the ability to estimate non-classical aspects, e.g. entanglement and quantum discord, in two-qubit systems, is relevant to optimise the performance of quantum information processes. Here we present an experiment in which the amount of entanglement and discord are measured exploiting different estimators. Among them, some will prove to be optimal, i.e., able to reach the ultimate precision bound allowed by quantum mechanics. These estimation techniques have been tested with a specific family of states ranging from nearly pure Bell states to completely mixed states. This work represents a significant step in the development of reliable metrological tools for quantum technologies.

Loss measurements are at the base of spectroscopy and imaging, thus perme- ating all the branches of science, from chemistry and biology to physics and material science. However, quantum mechanics laws set the ultimate limit to the sensitivity, constrained by the probe mean energy. This can be the main source of uncertainty, for example when dealing with delicate system such as biological samples or photosensitive chemicals. It turns out that ordinary (clas- sical) probe beams, namely with Poissonian photon number distribution, are fundamentally inadequate to measure small losses with the highest sensitivity. Conversely, we demonstrate that a quantum-correlated pair of beams, known as twin-beam state, allows reaching the ultimate sensitivity for all energy regimes (even less than one photon per mode) with the simplest measurement strategy. One beam of the pair addresses the sample, while the second one is used as a reference to compensate both for classical drifts and for uctuation at the most fundamental quantum level. This scheme is also absolute and accurate, since it self-compensates for unavoidable instability of the sources and detectors, which could otherwise lead to strongly biased results. Moreover, we report the best sensitivity per photon ever achieved in loss estimation experiments.

In this paper we provide an experimental illustration of Page and Wootters' quantum time mechanism that is able to describe two-time quantum correlation functions. This allows us to test a Leggett-Garg inequality, showing a violation from the "internal" observer point of view. The "external" observer sees a time-independent global state. Indeed, the scheme is implemented using a narrow-band single photon where the clock degree of freedom is encoded in the photon's position. Hence, the internal observer that measures the position can track the flow of time, while the external observer sees a delocalized photon that has no time evolution in the experiment time-scale., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Measurements are crucial in quantum mechanics, in fundamental research as well as in applicative fields like quantum metrology, quantum-enhanced measurements and other quantum technologies. In the recent years, weak-interaction-based protocols like Weak Measurements and Protective Measurements have been experimentally realized, showing peculiar features leading to surprising advantages in several different applications. In this work we analyze the validity range for such measurement protocols, that is, how the interaction strength affects the weak value extraction, by measuring different polarization weak values measured on heralded single photons. We show that, even in the weak interaction regime, the coupling intensity limits the range of weak values achievable, putting a threshold on the signal amplification effect exploited in many weak measurement based experiments.

Quantum mechanics presents peculiar properties that, on the one hand, have been the subject of several theoretical and experimental studies about its very foundations and, on the other hand, provide tools for developing new technologies, the so-called quantum technologies. The nonclassicality pointed out by Leggett-Garg inequalities has represented, with Bell inequalities, one of the most investigated subject. In this letter we study the connection of Leggett-Garg inequalities with a new emerging field of quantum measurement, the weak values. In particular, we perform an experimental study of the four-time correlators Legget-Garg test, by exploiting single and sequential weak measurements performed on heralded single photons. We show violation of a four-parameters Leggett-Garg inequality in different experimental conditions, demonstrating an interesting connection between Leggett-Garg inequality violation and anomalous weak values.

In this review we present the potentialities and the achievements of the use of non-classical photon number correlations in twin beams (TWB) states for many applications, ranging from imaging to metrology. Photon number correlations in the quantum regime are easy to be produced and are rather robust against unavoidable experimental losses, and noise in some cases, if compared to the entanglement, where loosing one photon can completely compromise the state and its exploitable advantage. Here, we will focus on quantum enhanced protocols in which only phase-insensitive intensity measurements (photon number counting) are performed, which allow probing transmission/absorption properties of a system, leading for example to innovative target detection schemes in a strong background. In this framework, one of the advantages is that the sources experimentally available emit a wide number of pairwise correlated modes, which can be intercepted and exploited separately, for example by many pixels of a camera, providing a parallelism, essential in several applications, like wide field sub-shot-noise imaging and quantum enhanced ghost imaging. Finally, non-classical correlation enables new possibilities in quantum radiometry, e.g. the possibility of absolute calibration of a spatial resolving detector from the on-off- single photon regime to the linear regime, in the same setup.

In the last years several proof of principle experiments have demonstrated the advantages of quantum technologies respect to classical schemes. The present challenge is to overpass the limits of proof of principle demonstrations to approach real applications. This letter presents such an achievement in the field of quantum enhanced imaging. In particular, we describe the realization of a sub-shot noise wide field microscope based on spatially multi-mode non-classical photon number correlations in twin beams. The microscope produces real time images of 8000 pixels at full resolution, for (500micrometers)2 field-of-view, with noise reduced to the 80% of the shot noise level (for each pixel), suitable for absorption imaging of complex structures. By fast post-elaboration, specifically applying a quantum enhanced median filter, the noise can be further reduced (less than 30% of the shot noise level) by setting a trade-off with the resolution, demonstrating the best sensitivity per incident photon ever achieved in absorption microscopy., Comment: Light: Science & Applications- Nature in press

Diamond is a promising material for the development of emerging applications in quantum optics, quantum information and quantum sensing. The fabrication and characterization of novel luminescent defects with suitable opto-physical properties is therefore of primary importance for further advances in these research fields. In this work we report on the investigation in the formation of photoluminescent (PL) defects upon MeV He implantation in diamond. Such color centers, previously reported only in electroluminescence and cathodoluminescence regime, exhibited two sharp emission lines at 536.5 nm and 560.5 nm, without significant phonon sidebands. A strong correlation between the PL intensities of the above-mentioned emission lines and the He implantation fluence was found in the 10^15-10^17 cm^{-2} fluence range. The PL emission features were not detected in control samples, i.e. samples that were either unirradiated or irradiated with different ion species (H, C). Moreover, the PL emission lines disappeared in samples that were He-implanted above the graphitization threshold. Therefore, the PL features are attributed to optically active defects in the diamond matrix associated with He impurities. The intensity of the 536.5 nm and 560.5 nm emission lines was investigated as a function of the annealing temperature of the diamond substrate. The emission was observed upon annealing at temperatures higher than 500{\deg}C, at the expenses of the concurrently decreasing neutral-vacancy-related GR1 emission intensity. Therefore, our findings indicate that the luminescence originates from the formation of a stable lattice defect. Finally, the emission was investigated under different laser excitations wavelengths (i.e. 532 nm and 405 nm) with the purpose of gaining a preliminary insight about the position of the related levels in the energy gap of diamond.

We show how the same set-up and procedure, exploiting spatially multi-mode quantum correlations, allows the absolute calibration of a EMCCD camera from the analog regime down to the single photon counting level, just by adjusting the brightness of the quantum source. At single photon level EMCCD can be operated as an on-off detector, where quantum efficiency depends on the discriminating threshold. We develop a simple model to explain the connection of the two different regime demonstrating that the efficiency estimated in the analog (bright) regime allows to accurately predict the detector behaviour in the photo-counting regime and vice-versa. This work establishes a bridge between two regions of the optical measurements that up to now have been based on completely different standards, detectors and measurement techniques.

In the last years the possibility of creating and manipulating quantum states of light has paved the way to the development of new technologies exploiting peculiar properties of quantum states, as quantum information, quantum metrology & sensing, quantum imaging ... In particular Quantum Imaging addresses the possibility of overcoming limits of classical optics by using quantum resources as entanglement or sub-poissonian statistics. Albeit quantum imaging is a more recent field than other quantum technologies, e.g. quantum information, it is now substantially mature for application. Several different protocols have been proposed, some of them only theoretically, others with an experimental implementation and a few of them pointing to a clear application. Here we present a few of the most mature protocols ranging from ghost imaging to sub shot noise imaging and sub Rayleigh imaging., Comment: REVIEW PAPER
