Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is the most common leukemia in adults. One of the best established CLL prognostic markers is the somatic hypermutational status of the IGHV gene which is a part of the immunoglobulin heavy chain variable region. Technology for IGHV genotyping has been optimized and has been applied in routine diagnostics for the first time in Bulgaria. A total of 105 patients with CLL from different Bulgarian regions were tested. IGHV mutational status was determined by Sanger sequencing on total genomic DNA (gDNA) or RNA extracted from mononuclear cells. All sequencing profiles were analyzed with the IMGT/V-QUEST tool. Within the course of the analysis a high percentage of IGHV unmutated status was established in the Varna district on the Black Sea (Northeast Bulgaria). In addition, the IGHV genotyping performed on gDNA revealed a rare case with multiple rearrangements. The present data from IGHV genotyping will help in choosing the proper treatment for the benefit of Bulgarian CLL patients.

The presence of variable degrees of non progressive cognitive impairment is recognized as a clinical feature of patients with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies (DMD and BMD), but its pathogenesis still remains a matter of debate. A number of findings have proved that rearrangements located in the second part of the dystrophin (DMD) gene seem to be preferentially associated with cognitive impairment. Dp140 is a distal dystrophin isoform, mainly expressed during fetal brain development, whose role for neuropsychological functioning was suggested.

This study was performed to evaluate the effects of a functional oil blend (castor oil plus cashew nutshell oil) on complete blood count, health parameters, and intestinal structure in nursery pigs. A total of 128 crossbreed piglets (6.79 ± 1.76 kg of body weight) were allocated in a randomized complete block design with two dietary treatments: a functional oil-free diet or a diet based on added functional oil (1500 mg functional oil blend/kg of diet). Both diets had 400-500 mg colistin sulphate/kg. Pigs fed functional oil had higher erythrocytes and monocytes on days 11 and 23, respectively. Lymphocyte concentration was reduced, and ileum pH was increased in pigs fed functional oil on day 23. On day 37, lower jejunal pH was observed. However, no treatment effect on diarrhoea occurrence was observed. The lactic acid bacteria count was greater in jejunum and ileum of pigs fed functional oil on day 23. Pigs fed functional oil had more jejunal lesions on day 37. Based on the criteria of this study, dietary supplementation to piglets with functional oil blend changed the concentration of erythrocytes and monocytes as an important role in the defence of the organism; however, it showed a reduced capacity to modify the pH in small intestinal contents, which was reflected in an absence in the incidence of diarrhoea. In addition, piglets fed the functional oil blend had improvements in lactic acid bacterial counts, without the ability to attenuate lesions in the jejunum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of calcitic seaweed (CS), calcitic limestone (CL) and monodicalcium phosphate (DP) fed to piglets in various combinations on their gastrointestinal tract and bones. A total of 128 piglets (21 days old, 5.50 ± 0.49 kg bodyweight (BW) were assigned to treatments in a randomized complete block design and eight replications to one of four diets: D1: with CL + DP, D2: with CL, CS + DP, D3, similar to D2, but with 30% less calcium from CS and DP, and D4: with CS + DP. Treatments affected the metatarsal bones, mineral concentration in the heart and liver, and pH in the cecum and colon. Piglets fed D4 tended to have a greater Enterobacteriaceae count in the jejunum and ileum compared with D1 (4.82 vs 4.79 CFU/g). Piglets fed D1 and D3 had a greater Enterobacteriaceae count in their cecum than D4 (4.79 and 4.80 vs 4.76). The D2 and D1 treatments produced greater crypt depth (CD) in the duodenum and ileum compared with D3 and D4, respectively. Feeding D3 resulted in a greater villus height (VH) to CD ratio in the duodenum compared with D2 and showed a 24.5% increase in heart weight compared with fed D1. In conclusion, CS could be an alternative source of calcium source for piglets. The inconsistent findings of the present study suggest the need for further studies to better understand the interplay of effects of Ca2+ source and level on its metabolism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bee pollen is a natural product composed of several nutrients, rich in free amino acids and with low fat content, as well as prophylactic and therapeutic properties, while that propolis is a natural product used in several ways as apitherapy in popular medicine and anti-inflammatory agent. Researches are being performed aiming to use of alternative ingredients in animal production in order to promote a better growth performance and to improve the health status of animals that are submitted to stressful production conditions. In this sense, products of apicultural origin are being used as therapeutic food additives and are showing benefits to animals in several studies. However, there is a great divergence in the results found in the literature regarding the correct use of these apiculture additives and the real benefits when used in animal nutrition, making the compilation of these data and their discussion relevant. Considering the nutritional composition and therapeutic effects of these two bee products and the possible benefits they can bring to the animals of production. Thus, this bibliographic review was carried out with the objective of discussing the main therapeutic properties and the use of pollen and of propolis bee in the nutrition of non-ruminant animals. This study aimed to assess the effects of starting creep feeding at different ages on performance, behaviour, haematological, and biochemical parameters in piglets. A total of 138 piglets (1.34 ± 0.25 kg, n = 13 sows), weaned at 21 d-old, were assigned to treatments using a completely randomized design. The litter was divided into two groups: seven litters (n = 80 piglets) were subjected to creep feeding on the fifth day of age (creep 5) and five litters (n = 58 piglets), on the tenth day of age (creep 10). Piglets were weighed at birth, weaning, and after the first week in the nursery. Piglet behaviour was evaluated daily for 15 min until day 20. Blood was collected on day 13, at weaning, and at the end of the first week in the nursery. There was no difference in body weight in the suckling phase, but piglets fed Creep 5 showed greater body weight gain in the first nursery week. The Creep 5 group had lower feed leftovers during the five days of evaluation of feed intake. There were no differences in haematological parameters and amylase concentration; however, the piglets spent more time lying down, sucking, and massaging the udder. On day 8, the piglets in the Creep 5 group showed a higher frequency of exploratory behaviour. In conclusion, piglets fed Creep 5 had optimal performance after weaning and improved feed intake capacity by displaying more exploratory behaviour than Creep 10. The goal of this study was to assess the qualitative and sensorial characteristics of beef and pork sundried meat (SDM) with different salt (NaCl) levels (6%, 8% and 10%) and curing times (30 and 40 h). Samples from the beef strip loin (Gluteus medius) and pork loin (Longissimus thoracic) were cut to a thickness of 5 cm. Three levels of salt were applied, and the meat was allowed to cure for either 30 or 40 hours with three replications per treatment. The pH, shear force (SF), luminosity (L*), tonality (TON), saturation, loss of water by cooking (LWC), moisture, crude protein (CP), sensory attributes, and consumers' intention to buy were analysed. Beef and pork produced differences in L*, saturation, TON, and CP, appearance, and colour of the sun-dried product. The SDM cured for 30 hours was higher in moisture, LWC and L* (P =0.023), and had greater CP content than that cured for 40 hours. The appearance and salinity of the product were affected by the level of salt that was used in making it. In conclusion, various NaCl levels did not influence the physical-chemical and qualitative characteristics of the SDM, but these characteristics were influenced by the curing and meat type. The aim of this study was to assess the digestibility coefficients (DC) of corn [maize] with an oil content above 3.46% and its effects on the performance of piglets when fed as dry grain (DG) and as rehydrated corn grain silage (RCGS). In Experiment I, 15 piglets (22.51 + 2.39 kg) were allocated to a reference diet (RD) and to two test diets in which corn in the RD was replaced with DG or RCGS. There were five replications of each treatment. Experiment II involved 36 piglets (14.76 ± 2.72 kg), which were assigned to a control diet with common corn grain and to diets in which DG or RCGS replaced the common corn. There were six replications of each treatment. Data were analysed with four statistical models. Model 1 included only the effect of treatment. Model 2 was similar to Model 1 but included initial bodyweight as a covariate. Model 3 was similar to model 1 but included the interaction of diet and period. Model 4 was similar to Model 3 but included the covariate. The more complicated models were generally preferred to Model 1 as they controlled more of the nuisance variation. Lipid membranes are an important component of the biological cell. The profound understanding of their structure and functionality, as well as, the influence of various biologically relevant admixtures on their main characteristics is of great importance for research and development in medicine and pharmacology. The effect of sugars on the behaviour of the membrane cell enjoys an ever-increasing interest as they are biologically significant substances. We have studied the influence of the disaccharide sucrose on the physicochemical properties of SOPC (1-stearoyl-2-oleoyl-sn- glycero-3-phosphocholine) lipid system aiming to gain better understanding of the mechanisms of the interaction between both substances. For that purpose, we have used differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Our results show that adding sugar up to 300 mM concentration substantially alters the thermodynamic and structural properties of SOPC. The DSC thermograms at heating reveal a general lowering of the SOPC transition temperature T m from gel to liquid crystalline phase (main phase transition, ordered-disordered phase transition) in the presence of sugar. The corresponding peaks are smeared and harder to trace. In agreement with this, a gradual decrease of the enthalpy values up to 300 mM was measured. The IR spectroscopy study provided spectral evidence for two states of hydration of the phosphate groups in the sugar-SOPC model systems suggesting a mechanism of interaction where only part of the phospholipid headgroups are hydrogen bonded to the sugar molecules. The obtained results are in good agreement with various earlier data including results about the bending elasticity moduli, as well as, some theoretical simulations on the sugar-lipid interactions. Breast cancer has a poor prognosis due to the toxic side effects associated with high doses of chemotherapy. Liposomal drug encapsulation has resulted in clinical success in enhancing chemotherapy tolerability. However, the formulation faces severe limitations with a lack of colloidal stability, reduced drug efficiency, and difficulties in storage conditions. Nanoarchaeosomes (NA) are a new generation of highly stable nanovesicles composed of the natural ether lipids extracted from archaea. In our study, we synthesized and characterized the NA, evaluated their colloidal stability, drug release potential, and anticancer efficacy. Transmission electron microscopy images have shown that the NA prepared from the hyperthermophilic archaeon Aeropyrum pernix K1 was in the size range of 61 ± 3 nm. The dynamic light scattering result has confirmed that the NA were stable at acidic pH (pH 4) and high temperature (70 °C). The NA exhibited excellent colloidal stability for 50 days with storage conditions at room temperature. The cell viability results have shown that the pure NA did not induce cytotoxicity in NIH 3T3 fibroblast cells and are biocompatible. Then NA were loaded with doxorubicin (NAD), and FTIR and UV-vis spectroscopy results have confirmed high drug loading efficiency of 97 ± 1% with sustained drug release for 48 h. The in vitro cytotoxicity studies in MCF-7 breast cancer cell lines showed that NAD induced cytotoxicity at less than 10 nM concentration. Fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) results confirmed that NAD induced late apoptosis in nearly 92% of MCF-7 cells and necrosis in the remaining cells with cell cycle arrest at the G0/G1 phase.
