Search

Understanding how and when galaxies formed stars over the history of the Universe is fundamental to the study of galaxy evolution. The star formation histories (SFHs) of galaxies in the local Universe can be measured with high precision using deep imaging with space telescopes. Such resolved SFHs are based on modelling the observed color-magnitude diagram (CMD) with stellar evolution models and rely on age-sensitive features like the main sequence turn-off to measure a galaxy's star formation rate as a function of time. There are many other population-level parameters that factor into these measurements, such as the stellar initial mass function (IMF), binary fraction, and metallicity, to name a few. We present and release StarFormationHistories.jl, a modular, open-source Julia package for measuring resolved SFHs with a focus on model flexibility for these types of population parameters. The code can model unresolved photometric binaries and supports arbitrary IMFs. Random uncertainties in the SFH measurements can be quantified with Monte Carlo posterior sampling methods. We illustrate the performance of the package on JWST/NIRCAM data of the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy WLM $\left(M_v\approx-14.2\right)$, which exhibits a complex, well-sampled CMD, and HST/ACS data of the ultra-faint Milky Way satellite dwarf galaxy Horologium I $\left(M_v\approx-3.7\right)$, which has a much simpler but sparser CMD., Comment: 28 pages, 11 figures, 1 appendix

NASA's Great Observatories Maturation Program (GOMAP) will advance the science definition, technology, and workforce needed for the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) with the goal of a Phase A start by the end of the current decade. GOMAP offers long-term cost and schedule savings compared to the 'TRL 6 by Preliminary Design Review' paradigm historically adopted by large NASA missions. Many of the key technologies in the development queue for HWO require the combined activities of 1) facility and process development for validation of technologies at the scale required for HWO and 2) deployment in the 'real world' environment of mission Integration & Test prior to on-orbit operations. We present a concept for the Smallsat Technology Accelerated Maturation Platform (STAMP), an integrated facility, laboratory, and instrument prototype development program that could be supported through the GOMAP framework and applied to any of NASA's Future Great Observatories (FGOs). This brief describes the recommendation for the first entrant into this program, "STAMP-1", an ESPA Grande-class mission advancing key technologies to enable the ultraviolet capabilities of HWO. STAMP-1 would advance new broadband optical coatings, high-sensitivity ultraviolet detector systems, and multi-object target selection technology to TRL 6 with a flight demonstration. STAMP-1 advances HWO technology on an accelerated timescale, building on current ROSES SAT+APRA programs, reducing cost and schedule risk for HWO while conducting a compelling program of preparatory science and workforce development with direct benefits for HWO mission implementation in the 2030s., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure. Observations of debris disks offer important insights into the formation and evolution of planetary systems. Though M dwarfs make up approximately 80% of nearby stars, very few M-dwarf debris disks have been studied in detail -- making it unclear how or if the information gleaned from studying debris disks around more massive stars extends to the more abundant M dwarf systems. We report the first scattered-light detection of the debris disk around the M4 star Fomalhaut C using JWST's Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam; 3.6$~\mu$m and 4.4$~\mu$m). This result adds to the prior sample of only four M-dwarf debris disks with detections in scattered light, and marks the latest spectral type and oldest star among them. The size and orientation of the disk in these data are generally consistent with the prior ALMA sub-mm detection. Though no companions are identified, these data provide strong constraints on their presence -- with sensitivity sufficient to recover sub-Saturn mass objects in the vicinity of the disk. This result illustrates the unique capability of JWST for uncovering elusive M-dwarf debris disks in scattered light, and lays the groundwork for deeper studies of such objects in the 2--5$~\mu$m regime., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

We have performed a comprehensive study of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) combining the photometric data obtained by the two \textit{HST} Treasury programs that targeted this region. To consistently analyze the rich dataset obtained in a wide variety of filters, we adopted a Bayesian approach to fit the Spectral Energy Distribution of the sources, deriving mass, age, extinction, distance, and accretion for each source in the region. The three dimensional study of mass distribution for bona-fide cluster members shows that mass segregation in the ONC extends to sub-solar masses, while the age distribution strongly supports the idea that star formation in the ONC is best described by a major episode of star formation that happened $\sim 1$ Myr ago. For masses $\gtrsim 0.1$ \Msun, our derived empirical initial mass function (IMF) is in good agreement with a Chabrier system IMF. Both the accretion luminosity (\Lacc) and mass accretion rates (\dMacc) are best described by broken power-law relations. This suggests that for the majority of young circumstellar disks in this cluster the excess emission may be dominated by X-ray-driven photoevaporation by the central star rather than external photoevaporation. If this is the case, the slopes of the power-law relations may be largely determined by the initial conditions set at the onset of the star formation process, which may be quite similar between regions that eventually form clusters of different sizes.

We present NIRCam and NIRISS modules for DOLPHOT, a widely-used crowded field stellar photometry package. We describe details of the modules including pixel masking, astrometric alignment, star finding, photometry, catalog creation, and artificial star tests (ASTs). We tested these modules using NIRCam and NIRISS images of M92 (a Milky Way globular cluster), Draco II (an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy), and WLM (a star-forming dwarf galaxy). DOLPHOT's photometry is highly precise and the color-magnitude diagrams are deeper and have better definition than anticipated during original program design in 2017. The primary systematic uncertainties in DOLPHOT's photometry arise from mismatches in the model and observed point spread functions (PSFs) and aperture corrections, each contributing $\lesssim0.01$ mag to the photometric error budget. Version 1.2 of WebbPSF models, which include charge diffusion and interpixel capacitance effects, significantly reduced PSF-related uncertainties. We also observed minor ($\lesssim0.05$ mag) chip-to-chip variations in NIRCam's zero points, which will be addressed by the JWST flux calibration program. Globular cluster observations are crucial for photometric calibration. Temporal variations in the photometry are generally $\lesssim0.01$ mag, although rare large misalignment events can introduce errors up to 0.08 mag. We provide recommended DOLPHOT parameters, guidelines for photometric reduction, and advice for improved observing strategies. We present an investigation of evolved stars in the nearby star-forming galaxy WLM, using NIRCam imaging from the JWST resolved stellar populations early-release science (ERS) program. We find that various combinations of the F090W, F150W, F250M, and F430M filters can effectively isolate red supergiants (RSGs) and thermally-pulsing asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) stars from one another, while also providing a reasonable separation of the primary TP-AGB subtypes: carbon-rich C-type stars and oxygen-rich M-type stars. The classification scheme we present here agrees very well with the well-established Hubble Space Telescope (HST) medium-band filter technique. The ratio of C to M-type stars (C/M) is 0.8$\pm$0.1 for both the new JWST and the HST classifications, which is within one sigma of empirical predictions from optical narrow-band CN and TiO filters. The evolved star colors show good agreement with the predictions from the PARSEC$+$COLIBRI stellar evolutionary models, and the models indicate a strong metallicity dependence that makes stellar identification even more effective at higher metallicity. However, the models also indicate that evolved star identification with NIRCam may be more difficult at lower metallicies. We test every combination of NIRCam filters using the models and present additional filters that are also useful for evolved star studies. We also find that $\approx$90\% of the dusty evolved stars are carbon-rich, suggesting that carbonaceous dust dominates the present-day dust production in WLM, similar to the findings in the Magellanic Clouds. We present the first star formation history (SFH) and age-metallicity relation (AMR) derived from resolved stellar populations imaged with the JWST NIRCam instrument. The target is the Local Group star-forming galaxy WLM at 970 kpc. The depth of the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) reaches below the oldest main sequence turn-off with a SNR=10 at M_F090W=+4.6 mag; this is the deepest CMD for any galaxy that is not a satellite of the Milky Way. We use Hubble Space Telescope (HST) optical imaging that overlaps with the NIRCam observations to directly evaluate the SFHs derived based on data from the two great observatories. The JWST and HST-based SFHs are in excellent agreement. We use the metallicity distribution function measured from stellar spectra to confirm the trends in the AMRs based on the JWST data. Together, these results confirm the efficacy of recovering a SFH and AMR with the NIRCam F090W-F150W filter combination and provide validation of the sensitivity and accuracy of stellar evolution libraries in the near-infrared relative to the optical for SFH recovery work. From the JWST data, WLM shows an early onset to star formation, followed by an extended pause post-reionization before star formation re-ignites, which is qualitatively similar to what has been observed in the isolated galaxies Leo~A and Aquarius. Quantitatively, 15% of the stellar mass formed in the first Gyr, while only 10% formed over the next ~5 Gyr; the stellar mass then rapidly doubled in ~2.5 Gyr, followed by constant star formation over the last ~5 Gyr., Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures, 1 table

We performed a HST/WFC3-IR imaging survey of the young stellar cluster NGC 2024 in three filters probing the 1.4~$\mu$m H$_2$O absorption feature, characteristic of the population of low mass and sub-stellar mass objects down to a few Jupyter masses. We detect 812 point sources, 550 of them in all 3 filters with signal to noise greater than 5. Using a distance-independent two-color diagram we determine extinction values as high as $A_V\simeq 40$. We also find that the change of effective wavelengths in our filters results in higher $A_V$ values as the reddening increases. Reconstructing a dereddened color-magnitude diagram we derive a luminosity histogram for both the full sample of candidate cluster members and for an extinction-limited sub-sample containing the 50% of sources with $A_V\lesssim 15$. Assuming a standard extinction law like Cardelli et al. (1989) with a nominal $R_V$=3.1 we produce a luminosity function in good agreement with the one resulting from a Salpeter-like Initial Mass Function for a 1~Myr isochrone. There is some evidence of an excess of luminous stars in the most embedded region. We posit that the correlation may be due to those sources being younger, and therefore overluminous than the more evolved and less extinct cluster's stars. We compare our classification scheme based on the depth of the 1.4$\mu$m photometric feature with the results from the spectroscopic survey of Levine et al. A wide-field near-infrared survey of the Galactic disk and bulge/bar(s) is supported by a large representation of the community of Galactic astronomers. The combination of sensitivity, angular resolution and large field of view make Roman uniquely able to study the crowded and highly extincted lines of sight in the Galactic plane. A ~1000 deg2 survey of the bulge and inner Galactic disk would yield an impressive dataset of ~120 billion sources and map the structure of our Galaxy. The effort would foster subsequent expansions in numerous dimensions (spatial, depth, wavelengths, epochs). Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. We present criteria for separately classifying stars and unresolved background galaxies in photometric catalogs generated with the point spread function (PSF) fitting photometry software DOLPHOT from images taken of Draco II, WLM, and M92 with the Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) on JWST. Photometric quality metrics from DOLPHOT in one or two filters can recover a pure sample of stars. Conversely, colors formed between short-wavelength (SW) and long-wavelength (LW) filters can be used to effectively identify pure samples of galaxies. Our results highlight that the existing DOLPHOT output parameters can be used to reliably classify stars in our NIRCam data without the need to resort to external tools or more complex heuristics., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure

We present the JWST Resolved Stellar Populations Early Release Science (ERS) science program. We obtained 27.5 hours of NIRCam and NIRISS imaging of three targets in the Local Group (Milky Way globular cluster M92, ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Draco II, star-forming dwarf galaxy WLM), which span factors of $\sim10^5$ in luminosity, $\sim10^4$ in distance, and $\sim10^5$ in surface brightness. We describe the survey strategy, scientific and technical goals, implementation details, present select NIRCam color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), and validate the NIRCam exposure time calculator (ETC). Our CMDs are among the deepest in existence for each class of target. They touch the theoretical hydrogen burning limit in M92 ($<0.08$ $M_{\odot}$; SNR $\sim5$ at $m_{F090W}\sim28.2$; $M_{F090W}\sim+13.6$), include the lowest-mass stars observed outside the Milky Way in Draco II (0.09 $M_{\odot}$; SNR $=10$ at $m_{F090W}\sim29$; $M_{F090W}\sim+12.1$), and reach $\sim1.5$ magnitudes below the oldest main sequence turnoff in WLM (SNR $=10$ at $m_{F090W}\sim29.5$; $M_{F090W}\sim+4.6$). The PARSEC stellar models provide a good qualitative match to the NIRCam CMDs, though are $\sim0.05$ mag too blue compared to M92 F090W$-$F150W data. The NIRCam ETC (v2.0) matches the SNRs based on photon noise from DOLPHOT stellar photometry in uncrowded fields, but the ETC may not be accurate in more crowded fields, similar to what is known for HST. We release beta versions of DOLPHOT NIRCam and NIRISS modules to the community. We use JWST NIRCam short wavelength photometry to capture a transit lightcurve of the exoplanet HAT-P-14 b to assess performance as part of instrument commissioning. The short wavelength precision is 152 ppm per 27 second integration as measured over the full time series compared to a theoretical limit of 107 ppm, after corrections to spatially correlated 1/f noise. Persistence effects from charge trapping are well fit by an exponential function with short characteristic timescales, settling on the order of 5-15 minutes. The short wavelength defocused photometry is also uniquely well suited to measure the realtime wavefront error of JWST. Analysis of the images and reconstructed wavefront maps indicate that two different hexagonal primary mirror segments exhibited "tilt events" where they changed orientation rapidly in less than ~1.4 seconds. In some cases, the magnitude and timing of the flux jumps caused by tilt events can be accurately predicted with a telescope model. These tilt events can be sensed by simultaneous longer-wavelength NIRCam grism spectral images alone in the form of changes to the point spread function, diagnosed from the FWHM. They can also be sensed with the FGS instrument from difference images. Tilt events possibly from sudden releases of stress in the backplane structure behind the mirrors were expected during the commissioning period because they were found in ground-based testing. Tilt events have shown signs of decreasing in frequency but have not disappeared completely. The detectors exhibit some minor (less than 1%) deviations from linear behavior in the first few groups of each integration, potentially impacting absolute fluxes and transit depths on bright targets where only a handful of groups are possible. Overall, the noise is within 50% of the theoretical photon noise and read noise. This bodes well for high precision time series measurements., Comment: PASP, Accepted for Publication

We present a sample of four emission-line galaxies at $z=6.11-6.35$ that were serendipitously discovered using the commissioning data for the JWST/NIRCam wide-field slitless spectroscopy (WFSS) mode. One of them (at $z=6.11$) has been reported previously while the others are new discoveries. These sources are selected by the secure detections of both [O III] $\lambda$5007 and H$\alpha$ lines with other fainter lines tentatively detected in some cases (e.g., [O II] $\lambda$3727, [O III] $\lambda$4959). In the [O III]/H$\beta$ - [N II]/H$\alpha$ Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich diagram, these galaxies occupy the same parameter space as that of $z\sim2$ star-forming galaxies, indicating that they have been enriched rapidly to sub-solar metallicities ($\sim$0.4 $Z_{\odot}$), similar to galaxies with comparable stellar masses at much lower redshifts. The detection of strong H$\alpha$ lines suggests a higher ionizing photon production efficiency within galaxies in the early Universe. We find brightening of the [O III] $\lambda$5007 line luminosity function (LF) from $z=3$ to 6, and weak or no redshift evolution of the H$\alpha$ line LF from $z=2$ to 6. Both LFs are under-predicted at $z\sim6$ by a factor of $\sim$10 in certain cosmological simulations. This further indicates a global Ly$\alpha$ photon escape fraction of 7-10% at $z\sim6$, slightly lower than previous estimates through the comparison of the UV-derived star-formation rate density and Ly$\alpha$ luminosity density. Our sample recovers $66^{+128}_{-44}$% of $z=6.0-6.6$ galaxies in the survey volume with stellar masses greater than $5\times10^8$ $M_{\odot}$, suggesting the ubiquity of strong H$\alpha$ and [O III] line emitters in the Epoch of Reionization, which will be further uncovered in the era of JWST., Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ on May 11, 2023

We use globular cluster data from the Resolved Stellar Populations Early Release Science (ERS) program to validate the flux calibration for the Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). We find a significant flux offset between the eight short wavelength detectors, ranging from 1-23% (about 0.01-0.2 mag) that affects all NIRCam imaging observations. We deliver improved zeropoints for the ERS filters and show that alternate zeropoints derived by the community also improve the calibration significantly. We also find that the detector offsets appear to be time variable by up to at least 0.1 mag., Comment: Accepted for publication in RNAAS

In a cold and stable space environment, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST or "Webb") reaches unprecedented sensitivities at wavelengths beyond 2 microns, serving most fields of astrophysics. It also extends the parameter space of high-contrast imaging in the near and mid-infrared. Launched in late 2021, JWST underwent a six month commissioning period. In this contribution we focus on the NIRCam Coronagraphy mode which was declared "science ready" on July 10 2022, the last of the 17 JWST observing modes. Essentially, this mode will allow to detect fainter/redder/colder (less massive for a given age) self-luminous exoplanets as well as other faint astrophysical signal in the vicinity of any bright object (stars or galaxies). Here we describe some of the steps and hurdles the commissioning team went through to achieve excellent performances. Specifically, we focus on the Coronagraphic Suppression Verification activity. We were able to produce firm detections at 3.35$\mu$m of the white dwarf companion HD 114174 B which is at a separation of $\simeq$ 0.5" and a contrast of $\simeq$ 10 magnitudes ($10^{4}$ fainter than the K$\sim$5.3 mag host star). We compare these first on-sky images with our latest, most informed and realistic end-to-end simulations through the same pipeline. We report the serendipitous discovery of an [O III] $\lambda\lambda$4959/5007 and H$\alpha$ line emitter in the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) with the JWST commissioning data taken in the NIRCam wide field slitless spectroscopy (WFSS) mode. Located $\sim$55" away from the flux calibrator P330-E, this galaxy exhibits bright [O III] $\lambda\lambda$4959/5007 and H$\alpha$ lines detected at 3.7, 9.9 and 5.7$\sigma$, respectively, with a spectroscopic redshift of $z=6.112\pm0.001$. The total H$\beta$+[O III] equivalent width is 664$\pm$98 \r{A} (454$\pm$78 \r{A} from the [O III] $\lambda$5007 line). This provides direct spectroscopic evidence for the presence of strong rest-frame optical lines (H$\beta$+[O III] and H$\alpha$) in EoR galaxies as inferred previously from the analyses of Spitzer/IRAC spectral energy distributions. Two spatial and velocity components are identified in this source, possibly indicating that this system is undergoing a major merger, which might have triggered the ongoing starburst with strong nebular emission lines over a timescale of $\sim$2 Myr as our SED modeling suggests. The tentative detection of He II $\lambda$4686 line ($1.9\sigma$), if real, may indicate the existence of very young and metal-poor star-forming regions with a hard UV radiation field. Finally, this discovery demonstrates the power and readiness of the JWST/NIRCam WFSS mode, and marks the beginning of a new era for extragalactic astronomy, in which EoR galaxies can be routinely discovered via blind slitless spectroscopy through the detection of rest-frame optical emission lines., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, published in the ApJL

This paper characterizes the actual science performance of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), as determined from the six month commissioning period. We summarize the performance of the spacecraft, telescope, science instruments, and ground system, with an emphasis on differences from pre-launch expectations. Commissioning has made clear that JWST is fully capable of achieving the discoveries for which it was built. Moreover, almost across the board, the science performance of JWST is better than expected; in most cases, JWST will go deeper faster than expected. We know little about the outermost exoplanets in planetary systems, because our detection methods are insensitive to moderate-mass planets on wide orbits. However, debris discs can probe the outer-planet population, because dynamical modelling of observed discs can reveal properties of perturbing planets. We use four sculpting and stirring arguments to infer planet properties in 178 debris-disc systems from the ISPY, LEECH and LIStEN planet-hunting surveys. Similar analyses are often conducted for individual discs, but we consider a large sample in a consistent manner. We aim to predict the population of wide-separation planets, gain insight into the formation and evolution histories of planetary systems, and determine the feasibility of detecting these planets in the near future. We show that a `typical' cold debris disc likely requires a Neptune- to Saturn-mass planet at 10-100 au, with some needing Jupiter-mass perturbers. Our predicted planets are currently undetectable, but modest detection-limit improvements (e.g. from JWST) should reveal many such perturbers. We find that planets thought to be perturbing debris discs at late times are similar to those inferred to be forming in protoplanetary discs, so these could be the same population if newly formed planets do not migrate as far as currently thought. Alternatively, young planets could rapidly sculpt debris before migrating inwards, meaning that the responsible planets are more massive (and located further inwards) than debris-disc studies assume. We combine self-stirring and size-distribution modelling to show that many debris discs cannot be self-stirred without having unreasonably high masses; planet- or companion-stirring may therefore be the dominant mechanism in many (perhaps all) debris discs. We use an $N$-body+smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulation of an isolated barred galaxy to study the age dependence of bulge longitudinal proper motion ($\mu_l$) rotation curves. We show that close to the minor axis ($|l| \sim 0^\circ$) the relatively young stars rotate more rapidly than the old stars, as found by Hubble Space Telescope in the Milky Way's (MW's) bulge. This behaviour would be expected also if the MW were unbarred. At larger $|l|$ a different behaviour emerges. Because younger stars trace a strong bar, their galactocentric radial motions dominate their $\mu_l$ at $|l| \sim 6^\circ$, leading to a reversal in the sign of $\left< \mu_l \right>$. This results in a rotation curve with forbidden velocities (negative $\left< \mu_l \right>$ at positive longitudes, and positive $\left< \mu_l \right>$ at negative longitudes). The old stars, instead, trace a much weaker bar and thus their kinematics are more axisymmetric, resulting in no forbidden velocities. We develop metrics of the difference in the $\left< \mu_l \right>$ rotation curves of young and old stars, and forbidden velocities. We use these to predict the locations where rotation curve reversals can be observed by HST and the Vera Rubin Telescope. Such measurements would represent support for the amplitude of the bar being a continuous function of age, as predicted by kinematic fractionation, in which the bar strength variations are produced purely by differences in the random motions of stellar populations at bar formation., Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures, 2 tables, published in MNRAS

The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) survey Measuring Young Stars in Space and Time (MYSST) entails some of the deepest photometric observations of extragalactic star formation, capturing even the lowest mass stars of the active star-forming complex N44 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We employ the new MYSST stellar catalog to identify and characterize the content of young pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars across N44 and analyze the PMS clustering structure. To distinguish PMS stars from more evolved line of sight contaminants, a non-trivial task due to several effects that alter photometry, we utilize a machine learning classification approach. This consists of training a support vector machine (SVM) and a random forest (RF) on a carefully selected subset of the MYSST data and categorize all observed stars as PMS or non-PMS. Combining SVM and RF predictions to retrieve the most robust set of PMS sources, we find $\sim26,700$ candidates with a PMS probability above 95% across N44. Employing a clustering approach based on a nearest neighbor surface density estimate, we identify 18 prominent PMS structures at $1$ $\sigma$ significance above the mean density with sub-clusters persisting up to and beyond $3$ $\sigma$ significance. The most active star-forming center, located at the western edge of N44's bubble, is a subcluster with an effective radius of $\sim 5.6$ pc entailing more than 1,100 PMS candidates. Furthermore, we confirm that almost all identified clusters coincide with known H II regions and are close to or harbor massive young O stars or YSOs previously discovered by MUSE and Spitzer observations., Comment: 29 pages, 21 figures, accepted for publication in AJ

In order to better understand the role of high-mass stellar feedback in regulating star formation in giant molecular clouds, we carried out a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Treasury Program "Measuring Young Stars in Space and Time" (MYSST) targeting the star-forming complex N44 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Using the F555W and F814W broadband filters of both the ACS and WFC3/UVIS, we built a photometric catalog of 461,684 stars down to $m_\mathrm{F555W} \simeq 29$ mag and $m_\mathrm{F814W} \simeq 28$ mag, corresponding to the magnitude of an unreddened 1 Myr pre-main-sequence star of $\approx0.09$ $M_\odot$ at the LMC distance. In this first paper we describe the observing strategy of MYSST, the data reduction procedure, and present the photometric catalog. We identify multiple young stellar populations tracing the gaseous rim of N44's super bubble, together with various contaminants belonging to the LMC field population. We also determine the reddening properties from the slope of the elongated red clump feature by applying the machine learning algorithm RANSAC, and we select a set of Upper Main Sequence (UMS) stars as primary probes to build an extinction map, deriving a relatively modest median extinction $A_{\mathrm{F555W}}\simeq0.77$ mag. Photometric surveys with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) allow us to study stellar populations with high resolution and deep coverage, with estimates of the physical parameters of the constituent stars being typically obtained by comparing the survey data with adequate stellar evolutionary models. This is a highly non-trivial task due to effects such as differential extinction, photometric errors, low filter coverage, or uncertainties in the stellar evolution calculations. These introduce degeneracies that are difficult to detect and break. To improve this situation, we introduce a novel deep learning approach, called conditional invertible neural network (cINN), to solve the inverse problem of predicting physical parameters from photometry on an individual star basis and to obtain the full posterior distributions. We build a carefully curated synthetic training data set derived from the PARSEC stellar evolution models to predict stellar age, initial/current mass, luminosity, effective temperature and surface gravity. We perform tests on synthetic data from the MIST and Dartmouth models, and benchmark our approach on HST data of two well-studied stellar clusters, Westerlund 2 and NGC 6397. For the synthetic data we find overall excellent performance, and note that age is the most difficult parameter to constrain. For the benchmark clusters we retrieve reasonable results and confirm previous findings for Westerlund 2 on cluster age ($1.04_{-0.90}^{+8.48}\,\mathrm{Myr} $), mass segregation, and the stellar initial mass function. For NGC 6397 we recover plausible estimates for masses, luminosities and temperatures, however, discrepancies between stellar evolution models and observations prevent an acceptable recovery of age for old stars., Comment: Accepted for Publication by MNRAS on 19. We present a catalog of high-precision proper motions in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC), based on Treasury Program observations with the Hubble Space Telescope's (HST) ACS/WFC camera. Our catalog contains 2,454 objects in the magnitude range of $14.2

In order to obtain a complete census of the stellar and sub-stellar population, down to a few M$_{Jup}$ in the $\sim1$ Myr old Orion Nebula Cluster, we used the infrared channel of the Wide Field Camera 3 of the Hubble Space Telescope with the F139M and F130N filters. These bandpasses correspond to the $1.4 \mu$m H$_2$O absorption feature and an adjacent line-free continuum region. Out of $4,504$ detected sources, $3,352$ (about $75\%$) appear fainter than m$_{130}=14$ (Vega mag) in the F130N filter, a brightness corresponding to the hydrogen-burning limit mass (M$\simeq 0.072 M_\odot$) at $\sim 1$ Myr. Of these, however, only $742$ sources have a negative F130M-139N color index, indicative of the presence of H$_2$O vapor in absorption, and can therefore be classified as bona-fide M and L dwarfs, with effective temperatures T$\lesssim 2850$ K at an assumed $1$ Myr cluster age. On our color-magnitude diagram, this population of sources with H$_2$O absorption appears clearly distinct from the larger background population of highly reddened stars and galaxies with positive F130M-F139N color index, and can be traced down to the sensitivity limit of our survey, m$_{130}\simeq 21.5$, corresponding to a $1$ Myr old $\simeq 3 $M$_{Jup}$, planetary mass object under about 2 magnitudes of visual extinction. Theoretical models of the BT-Settl family predicting substellar isochrones of $1, 2$ and $3$ Myr (down to $\sim 1 $M$_{Jup}$) fail to reproduce the observed H$_2$O color index at M$\lesssim 20 $M$_{Jup}$. We perform a Bayesian analysis to determine extinction, mass and effective temperature of each sub-stellar member of our sample, together with its membership probability., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. We present new results concerning the sub-stellar binary population in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). Using the Karhunen-Lo\`{e}ve Image Projection (KLIP) algorithm, we have reprocessed images taken with the IR channel of the Wide Field Camera 3 mounted on the Hubble Space Telescope to unveil faint close companions in the wings of the stellar PSFs. Starting with a sample of $1392$ bona-fide not saturated cluster members, we detect $39$ close-pairs cluster candidates with separation $0.16''-0.77''$. The primary masses span a range M$_p$ $\sim 0.015-1.27$ M$_{\odot}$ whereas for the companions we derive M$_c$ $\sim 0.004-0.54$ M$_{\odot}$. Of these $39$ binary systems, $18$ were already known while the remaining $21$ are new detections. Correcting for completeness and combining our catalog with previously detected ONC binaries, we obtain an overall binary fraction of $11.5\% \pm 0.9\%$. Compared to other star forming regions, our multiplicity function is $\sim 2$ smaller than e.g. Taurus, while compared to the binaries in the field we obtain comparable values. We analyze the mass function of the binaries, finding differences between the mass distribution of binaries and single stars and between primary and companion mass distributions. The mass ratio shows a bottom-heavy distribution with median value of $M_c/M_p \sim 0.25$. Overall our results suggest that ONC binaries may represent a template for the typical population of field binaries, supporting the hypothesis that the ONC may be regarded as a most typical star forming region in the Milky Way., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We exploit the ability of the Hubble Space Telescope to probe near infrared water absorption present in the atmosphere of low-mass stars, brown dwarfs and planetary mass objects to create a very pure sample of Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) members, not affected by contamination from background stars and galaxies which lack water absorption. Thanks to these data we infer the Initial Mass Function (IMF) of the ONC in the $0.005 - 1.4$M$_{\odot}$ regime, i.e. down to few Jupiter masses. The young age of the ONC, $\sim1$ Myr, provides a snapshot of the outcome of star formation for the present-day conditions (metallicity, temperature, pressure) of typical Milky Way disk molecular clouds. We demonstrate that the IMF of the ONC is well described by either a log-normal function or a broken power-law, with parameter values qualitatively in agreement with the canonical Chabrier or Kroupa forms for the Milky Way disk IMF. This continuity in the mass distribution provides clues to the fact that the same physical processes may be regulating formation of stars, brown dwarfs, and planetary mass objects. Both the canonical IMF forms under-predict the observed number of very low mass members (below $0.1$ M$_\odot$), a regime where our data allows more precise constraints. Nevertheless, we do not observe a rise or secondary peak in the brown dwarfs or planetary mass regimes. Our study thus contradicts findings based on broad-band near infrared ground-based photometry, which predict an extremely high number of free-floating planets, but likely suffer from unaccounted background contamination., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Major pillars in the science program for MSE include (i) the ultimate Gaia follow-up facility for understanding the chemistry and dynamics of the distant Milky Way, including the outer disk and faint stellar halo at high spectral resolution (ii) galaxy formation and evolution at cosmic noon, via the type of revolutionary surveys that have occurred in the nearby Universe, but now conducted at the peak of the star formation history of the Universe (iii) derivation of the mass of the neutrino and insights into inflationary physics through a cosmological redshift survey that probes a large volume of the Universe with a high galaxy density. Galaxies evolve under the influence of gas flows between their interstellar medium and their surrounding gaseous halos known as the circumgalactic medium (CGM). The CGM is a major reservoir of galactic baryons and metals, and plays a key role in the long cycles of accretion, feedback, and recycling of gas that drive star formation. In order to fully understand the physical processes at work within galaxies, it is therefore essential to have a firm understanding of the composition, structure, kinematics, thermodynamics, and evolution of the CGM. In this white paper we outline connections between the CGM and galactic star formation histories, internal kinematics, chemical evolution, quenching, satellite evolution, dark matter halo occupation, and the reionization of the larger-scale intergalactic medium in light of the advances that will be made on these topics in the 2020s. We argue that, in the next decade, fundamental progress on all of these major issues depends critically on improved empirical characterization and theoretical understanding of the CGM. In particular, we discuss how future advances in spatially-resolved CGM observations at high spectral resolution, broader characterization of the CGM across galaxy mass and redshift, and expected breakthroughs in cosmological hydrodynamic simulations will help resolve these major problems in galaxy evolution., Comment: Astro2020 Decadal Science White Paper

Globular Clusters (GCs) in the Milky Way represent the ideal laboratory to establish the age of the oldest stellar populations and to measure the color-magnitude relation of stars. Infrared (IR) photometry of these objects provides a new opportunity to accomplish this task. In particular, at low stellar masses, the stellar main sequence (MS) in an IR color-magnitude diagram (CMD) exhibits a sharp "kink" (due to opacity effects in M dwarfs), such that lower mass and cooler dwarfs become bluer in the F110W - F160W color baseline and not redder. This inversion of the color-magnitude relation offers the possibility to fit GC properties using IR imaging, and to reduce their uncertainties. Here, we used the IR channel of the Wide Field Camera 3 onboard the Hubble Space Telescope to obtain new, deep high-resolution photometry of the old metal-poor GC NGC6397. From the analysis of the GC CMD, we revealed below the MS "kink" the presence of two MSs with different chemical composition. We derived the cluster fiducial line and we compared it with a grid of isochrones over a large range of parameter space, allowing age, metallicity, distance and reddening to vary freely within reasonable selected ranges. We derived an age of 12.6 Gyr with a random uncertainty sigma ~ 0.7 Gyr. These results confirm that the analysis of the IR color-magnitude of stars provide a valuable tool to measure the GC ages and offers a new venue to determine their absolute age to sub-Gyr accuracy with next generation IR telescopes., Comment: 9 pages in emulateapj LaTeX style, incl. 9 figures, 2 tables. The HST/WFC3 multiband photometry spanning from the UV to the near-IR of four fields in the Galactic bulge, together with that for six template globular and open clusters, are used to photometrically tag the metallicity [Fe/H] of stars in these fields after proper-motion rejecting most foreground disk contaminants. Color-magnitude diagrams and luminosity functions are then constructed, in particular for the most metal rich and most metal poor stars in each field. We do not find any significant difference between the $I$-band and $H$-band luminosity functions, hence turnoff luminosity and age, of the metal rich and metal poor components which therefore appear essentially coeval. In particular, we find that no more than $\sim 3\%$ of the metal-rich component can be $\sim 5$ Gyr old, or younger. Conversely, theoretical luminosity functions give a good match to the observed ones for an age of ~10 Gyr. Assuming this age is representative for the bulk of bulge stars, we then recall the observed properties of star-forming galaxies at 10 Gyr lookback time, i.e., at z~2, and speculate about bulge formation in that context. We argue that bar formation and buckling instabilities leading to the observed boxy/peanut, X-shaped bulge may have arisen late in the history of the Milky Way galaxy, once its gas fraction had decreased compared to the high values typical of high-redshift galaxies. We use deep $HST$ WFC3/IR imaging to study the Initial Mass Function (IMF) of the ultra faint dwarf galaxy Coma Berenices (Com Ber). Our observations reach the lowest stellar mass ever probed in a resolved galaxy, with 50\% completeness at $\sim 0.17$ M$_{\odot}$. Unresolved background galaxies however limit our purity below $\sim 0.23$ M$_{\odot}$. If modeled with a single power law, we find that the IMF slope is $-1.45^{+0.29}_{-0.3}$ (68\% credible intervals), compared to a Milky Way value of $-2.3$. For a broken power law, we obtain a low-mass slope of $-1.18_{-0.33}^{+0.49}$, a high-mass slope of $-1.88_{-0.49}^{+0.43}$ and a break mass of $0.57_{-0.08}^{+0.12}$ M$_{\odot}$, compared to $-1.3$, $-2.3$ and 0.5 M$_{\odot}$ for a Kroupa IMF. For a log-normal IMF model we obtain values of $0.33_{-0.16}^{+0.15}$ M$_{\odot}$ for the location parameter and of $0.68_{-0.12}^{+0.17}$ for $\sigma$ (0.22 M$_{\odot}$ and 0.57 for the Chabrier system IMF). All three parametrizations produce similar agreement with the data. Our results agree with previous analysis of shallower optical HST data. However analysis of similar optical data of other dwarfs finds IMFs significantly more bottom-light than in the Milky Way. These results suggest two, non mutually exclusive, possibilities: that the discrepancy of the dwarf galaxies IMF with respect to the Milky Way is, at least partly, an artifact of using a single power law model, and that there is real variance in the IMF at low masses between the currently studied nearby dwarfs, with Com Ber being similar to the Milky Way, but other dwarfs differing significantly., Comment: ApJ accepted

We report results from an exploratory study implementing a new probe of Galactic evolution using archival Hubble Space Telescope imaging observations. Precise proper motions are combined with photometric relative metallicity and temperature indices, to produce the proper motion rotation curves of the Galactic bulge separately for metal-poor and metal-rich Main Sequence samples. This provides a "pencil-beam" complement to large-scale wide-field surveys, which to-date have focused on the more traditional bright Giant Branch tracers. We find strong evidence that the Galactic bulge rotation curves drawn from "Metal-rich" and "Metal-poor" samples are indeed discrepant. The "Metal-rich" sample shows greater rotation amplitude and a steeper gradient against line of sight distance, as possibly a stronger central concentration along the line of sight. This may represent a new detection of differing orbital anisotropy between metal-rich and metal-poor bulge objects. We also investigate selection effects that would be implied for the longitudinal proper motion cut often used to isolate a "pure-bulge" sample. Extensive investigation of synthetic stellar populations suggest that instrumental and observational artifacts are unlikely to account for the observed rotation curve differences. Thus, proper motion-based rotation curves can be used to probe chemo-dynamical correlations for Main Sequence tracer stars, which are orders of magnitude more numerous in the Galactic Bulge than the bright Giant Branch tracers. Using deep HST/ACS observations, we demonstrate that the sub-solar stellar initial mass function (IMF) of 6 ultra-faint dwarf Milky Way Satellites (UFDs) is more bottom light than the IMF of the Milky Way disk. Our data have a lower mass limit of about 0.45 M$_{\odot}$, while the upper limit is $\sim 0.8$ M$_\odot$, set by the turn-off mass of these old, metal poor systems. If formulated as a single power law, we obtain a shallower IMF slope than the "Salpeter" value of $-2.3$, ranging from $-1.01$ for Leo IV, to $-1.87$ for Bo\"otes I. The significance of such deviations depends on the galaxy and is typically 95\% or more. When modeled as a log-normal, the IMF fit results in a larger peak mass than in the Milky Way disk, however a Milky Way disk value for the characteristic system mass ($\sim0.22$ M$_{\odot}$) is excluded only at 68\% significance, and only for some UFDs in the sample. We find that the IMF slope correlates well with the galaxy mean metallicity and, to a lesser degree, with the velocity dispersion and the total mass. The strength of the observed correlations is limited by shot noise in the number of observed stars, but future space-based missions like JWST and WFIRST will both enhance the number of dwarf Milky Way Satellites that can be studied in such detail, and the observation depth for individual galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ on 18 Jan 2018

We examine the level of substructure and mass segregation in the massive, young cluster Westerlund 1. We find that it is relatively smooth, with little or no mass segregation, but with the massive stars in regions of significantly higher than average surface density. While an expanding or bouncing-back scenario for the evolution of Westerlund 1 cannot be ruled out, we argue that the most natural model to explain these observations is one in which Westerlund 1 formed with no primordial mass segregation and at a similar or larger size than we now observe., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS (11 pages, 4 figures)

Globular Clusters (GCs) in the Milky Way are the primary laboratories for establishing the ages of the oldest stellar populations and for measuring the color-magnitude relation of stars. In infrared (IR) color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), the stellar main sequence (MS) exhibits a "kink", due to opacity effects in M dwarfs, such that lower mass and cooler dwarfs become bluer in the IR color baseline. This diagnostic offers a new opportunity to model GC CMDs and to reduce uncertainties on cluster properties (e.g., their derived ages). In this context, we analyzed Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 IR archival observations of four GCs - 47Tuc, M4, NGC2808, and NGC6752 - for which the data are deep enough to fully sample the low-mass MS, reaching at least ~ 2 mag below the "kink". We derived the fiducial lines for each cluster and compared them with a grid of isochrones over a large range of parameter space, allowing age, metallicity, distance, and reddening to vary within reasonable selected ranges. The derived ages for the four clusters are respectively 11.6, 11.5, 11.2, and 12.1 Gyr and their random uncertainties are \sigma ~ 0.7 - 1.1 Gyr. Our results suggest that the near-IR MS "kink", combined with the MS turn-off, provides a valuable tool to measure GC ages and offers a promising opportunity to push the absolute age of GCs to sub-Gyr accuracy with the next generation IR telescopes such as the James Webb Space Telescope and the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope., Comment: 16 pages in emulateapj LaTeX style, incl. 10 figures (low res.), 4 tables. We present a new method for deriving the stellar birth function (SBF) of resolved stellar populations. The SBF (stars born per unit mass, time, and metallicity) is the combination of the initial mass function (IMF), the star-formation history (SFH), and the metallicity distribution function (MDF). The framework of our analysis is that of Poisson Point Processes (PPPs), a class of statistical models suitable when dealing with points (stars) in a multidimensional space (the measurement space of multiple photometric bands). The theory of PPPs easily accommodates the modeling of measurement errors as well as that of incompleteness. Compared to most of the tools used to study resolved stellar populations, our method avoids binning stars in the color-magnitude diagram and uses the entirety of the information (i.e., the whole likelihood function) for each data point; the proper combination of the individual likelihoods allows the computation of the posterior probability for the global population parameters. This includes unknowns such as the IMF slope and combination of SFH and MDF, which are rarely solved for simultaneously in the literature, however entangled and correlated they might be. Our method also allows proper inclusion of nuisance parameters, such as distance and extinction distributions. The aim of this paper, is to assess the validity of this new approach under a range of assumptions, using only simulated data. Forthcoming work will show applications to real data. Although it has a broad scope of possible applications, we have developed this method to study multi-band HST observations of the Milky Way Bulge. We present new constraints on the star formation histories of six ultra-faint dwarf galaxies: Bootes I, Canes Venatici II, Coma Berenices, Hercules, Leo IV, and Ursa Major I. Our analysis employs a combination of high-precision photometry obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope, medium-resolution spectroscopy obtained with the DEep Imaging Multi-Object Spectrograph on the W.M. Keck Observatory, and updated Victoria-Regina isochrones tailored to the abundance patterns appropriate for these galaxies. The data for five of these Milky Way satellites are best fit by a star formation history where at least 75% of the stars formed by z~10 (13.3 Gyr ago). All of the galaxies are consistent with 80% of the stars forming by z~6 (12.8 Gyr ago) and 100% of the stars forming by z~3 (11.6 Gyr ago).
