Fluctuations of gravitational forces cause so-called Newtonian noise (NN) in gravitational-wave (GW) detectors which is expected to limit their low-frequency sensitivity in upcoming observing runs. Seismic NN is produced by seismic waves passing near a detector's suspended test masses. It is predicted to be the strongest contribution to NN. Modeling this contribution accurately is a major challenge. Arrays of seismometers were deployed at the Virgo site to characterize the seismic field near the four test masses. In this paper, we present results of a spectral analysis of the array data from one of Virgo's end buildings to identify dominant modes of the seismic field. Some of the modes can be associated with known seismic sources. Analyzing the modes over a range of frequencies, we provide a dispersion curve of Rayleigh waves. We find that the Rayleigh speed in the NN frequency band 10 Hz - 20 Hz is very low ($\lesssim$100\,m/s), which has important consequences for Virgo's seismic NN. Using the new speed estimate, we find that the recess formed under the suspended test masses by a basement level at the end buildings leads to a 10 fold reduction of seismic NN., Comment: This draft has been approved through LIGO and VIRGO review process

In this paper we present a software, developed in the distributed control system environment of the Virgo gravitational-wave detector, for the management of a highly automated optical bench. The bench is extensively used for the research and development of squeezed states of light generation in order to mitigate the quantum noise in the next generations of interferometric gravitational-wave detectors. The software is developed using Finite-State Machines, recently implemented as a new feature of damping-adv Software Development Kit. It has been studied for its ease of use and stability of operation and thus offers a high duty-cycle of operation. Much attention has been drawn to ensure the software scalability and integration with the existing Data AcQuisition and control infrastructure of the Virgo detector., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Squeezed states of light contribute to the reduction of quantum noise in gravitational-wave interferometers. This result, predicted by Caves in 1981, has been demonstrated by the main gravitational-wave detectors. The injection of phase-squeezed light only decreases quantum shot noise fluctuations, improving the detector sensitivity in high-frequency band; the corresponding anti-squeezing, indeed, induces radiation pressure noise, increasing quantum noise in low-frequency band. This becomes important for near detector generation, where current low frequency noises, that cover the radiation pressure noise, will be reduced. To face this problem, the use of frequency dependent squeezing, obtained using a long external filter cavity, is planned. An alternative method, based on EPR experiment, can be used for the same purpose. It has the advantage to avoid further complex infrastructures required for the filter cavity. We propose a table-top experiment to test the broadband quantum noise reduction that can be obtained injecting entangled beams through the interferometer dark port. The conceptual design and the possible implementation in a small-scale suspended interferometer will be presented.

In this paper, we introduce the work on hardware and software built to manage the optical bench which hosts the optical squeezer source at the Virgo site in Cascina. In the past, the ex- perimental setup implemented frequency-independent squeezing and it will be soon recongured in order to implement frequency-dependent squeezing via EPR entanglement for Virgo gravitational- wave detector. Furthermore we introduce an idea of automation for this prototypic subsystem in order to deliver a compact and robust apparatus which does not require surveillance of an operator.

11. A/D and D/A Processing Unit for Real Time Control of Suspended Masses in Advanced Virgo Interferometer

AdV* is the project to upgrade** the VIRGO*** interferometric detector of gravitational waves. We present a major upgrade consisting of the design of new control electronics of the seismic isolation systems called Super-Attenuators (SAs)*. SAs are mechanical structures used to insulate optical elements from seismic noise. The control electronics are used to manage sensors, actuators, and stepping motors placed in the SAs. The design effort resulted in a high-performance signal conditioning and processing platform (UDSPT) that enables users to implement hard real-time control systems. The form factor is a variation of a double compact Module PICMG AMC.0 R2.0 Advanced MC. The key features are a TI DSP embedded, two GE ports, an AMC Interface containing SRIO, and GE, an FPGA interfacing data converters through PCIe. Additionally, it includes six 24-bit 3.83 MHz ADC and six 24-bit 320 kHz DAC converters, with fully differential inputs and outputs. In a single local control unit - a single 6U x 19 crate - up to 72 ADC + 72 DAC channels supported by 720 GFLOPs are allocated. - Abstract
We report on a new all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves in the frequency band 475-2000 Hz and with a frequency time derivative in the range of [-1.0,+0.1]×10-8 Hz/s. Potential signals could be produced by a nearby spinning and slightly nonaxisymmetric isolated neutron star in our Galaxy. This search uses the data from Advanced LIGO's first observational run O1. No gravitational-wave signals were observed, and upper limits were placed on their strengths. For completeness, results from the separately published low-frequency search 20-475 Hz are included as well. Our lowest upper limit on worst-case (linearly polarized) strain amplitude h0 is ∼4×10-25 near 170 Hz, while at the high end of our frequency range, we achieve a worst-case upper limit of 1.3×10-24. For a circularly polarized source (most favorable orientation), the smallest upper limit obtained is ∼1.5×10-25. © 2018 American Physical Society.

Measurements of its optical properties are needed for the understanding of the instrument. The techniques developed for the measurement of the optical parameters of Virgo are presented in this paper. These parameters are compared to the Virgo specifications.

Active devices based on piezoelectric actuators are widely used to dump unwanted vibrations in a variety of applications; for instance fast tuners for superconducting RF cavities. In another poster, we describe a low cost modular system of drivers for piezoelectric actuators developed at INFN-Pisa; we show here that the same system can easily be extended, with the inclusion of a simple plug-in board, to include sufficient I/O and computing capability to allow control of the device up to frequencies in the kHz range. This implementation is extremely cost effective and can be used in all situations where a high granularity distributed control system is desirable. We also show our first test results obtained using this system to control a warm single cell 1.3 GHz cavity. The cavity is perturbed using a piezoelectric actuator to generate random noise, while another piezo is used in the control loop to stabilize the resonance frequency. We use the phase of the RF pickup from the cavity as a measure of the deviation from the resonance caused by the perturbation. Superconductive cavities for future linear accelerators, such as ILC, have extremely large quality factors requiring an effective stabilization with both slow and fast tuners. Piezoelectric actuators are the most common choice for fast tuners, but one drawback for a large scale application is the limited bandwidth and the large cost of commercially available drivers. In this paper we present a low cost driver which is ideally suited for fast tuner application, large system packaging and has an excellent flexibility in its implementation. Driving piezoelectric actuators having capacitive loads up to a few microfarads in the kHz range requires amplifiers with good current output capabilities at a few hundred volts. The Piezo Control Unit we developed for the ILC Test Area at Fermilab is composed by a 6U Eurocard crate hosting 5 Piezo Driver modules capable of driving up to 10 piezoelectric actuators. Main specifications include large voltage rails (-175 V to +175V), wide signal bandwidth (DC to10 kHz) and low output noise ( 10 mVrms).
