Abstract

Byline: E. Genikhovich, E. Filatova, A. Ziv The aim of this paper is to develop the technique for mapping the air pollution in cities using measured and computed concentrations. It is based on the combined use of deterministic and stochastic modelling. Two different approaches are applied to extrapolate the measurements to the regular grid points covering the city. The first uses the method of the principal components, and the second is based on optimal interpolation or 'kriging' of meteorological fields. The results of the application of this model for the mapping of air pollution in the city of Pskov, Russia, are given.

Abstract

The paper presents dynamic cores v.4 and v.5 of the System for Integrated modeLling of Atmospheric coMposition SILAM v.5.5 based on the advection algorithm of Michael Galperin. This advection routine, so far weakly presented in international literature, is non-diffusive, positively defined, stable with regard to Courant number significantly above one, and very efficient computationally. For the first time, we present a rigorous description of its original version, along with several updates that improve its monotonicity and allow applications to long-living species in conditions of complex atmospheric flows. The other extension allows the scheme application to dynamics of aerosol spectra. The scheme is accompanied with the previously developed vertical diffusion algorithm, which encapsulates the dry deposition process as a boundary condition. Connection to chemical transformation modules is outlined, accounting for the specifics of transport scheme. Quality of the advection routine is evaluated using a large set of tests. The original approach has been previously compared with several classic algorithms widely used in operational models. The basic tests were repeated for the updated scheme, along with demanding global 2-D tests recently suggested in literature, which allowed positioning the scheme with regard to sophisticated state-of-the-art approaches. Abstract

The current state of studies on short-lived atmospheric constituents (greenhouse gases and aerosols) is reviewed. They have short atmospheric lifetimes (from several days to a few years) and can significantly affect the environment and climate. We propose reducing the emissions of these constituents as an alternative to the reduction of man-made carbon dioxide releases. We consider methane, hydrofluorocarbons, tropospheric ozone, and various aerosols (primarily, black carbon); discuss their atmospheric sources and destruction mechanisms; evaluate their content, atmospheric emissions, and climate impacts; and recommend efficient actions for the nearest future. Abstract

A methodology of validation of dispersion models is analysed in this paper for situations when measurements, corresponding to a given set of governing meteorological parameters, are contaminated with stochastic noise resulting from the turbulent nature of atmospheric processes. Deterministic dispersion models in these situations predict certain non-stochastic values of concentrations and, therefore, cannot reproduce measured patterns of stochasticity. Resulting discrepancies are reflected in all indicators of performance of the models. The values of these indicators are estimated in this paper for an idealized case of a 'perfect model' that can predict exact values of characteristics of the probability distribution function of measured concentrations in assumption that this PDF can be fitted with a lognormal distribution. The estimates obtained can be used as reference values of the indicators of performance of dispersion models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
