Abstract Background The accuracy of artificial intelligence (AI) and experts in diagnosing early esophageal cancer (EC) and its infiltration depth was summarized and analyzed, thus identifying the advantages of AI over traditional manual diagnosis, with a view to more accurately assisting doctors in evaluating the patients' conditions and improving their cure and survival rates. Methods The PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, Google, and CNKI databases were searched for relevant literature related to AI diagnosis of early EC and its invasion depth published before August 2023. Summary analysis of pooled sensitivity, specificity, summary receiver operating characteristics (SROC) and area under the curve (AUC) of AI in diagnosing early EC were performed, and Review Manager and Stata were adopted for data analysis. Results A total of 19 studies were enrolled with a low to moderate total risk of bias. The pooled sensitivity of AI for diagnosing early EC was markedly higher than that of novices and comparable to that of endoscopists. Moreover, AI predicted early EC with markedly higher AUCs than novices and experts (0.93 vs. 0.74 vs. 0.89). In addition, pooled sensitivity and specificity in the diagnosis of invasion depth in early EC were higher than that of experts, with AUCs of 0.97 and 0.92, respectively. Conclusion AI‐assistance can diagnose early EC and its infiltration depth more accurately, which can help in its early intervention and the customization of personalized treatment plans. Therefore, AI systems have great potential in the early diagnosis of EC.

This article addresses the challenges of the reduced efficiency in phase-shifted full-bridge series resonant converters (PSFB-SRCs) used within micro-inverters (MIs), especially under light load and high input voltage conditions. To enhance performance, first-order and second-order time-domain equivalent models that accurately predict the output gain across a wide range of operating conditions are developed. A novel control strategy is proposed, featuring turn-on time as a feedback variable, with phase shift angle and dead time as feedforward variables, enabling precise computation of frequency, duty cycle, and phase shift time for digital controllers. This ensures optimal efficiency, stability, and dynamic response, regardless of the load conditions. Experimental results from the prototype confirmed zero-voltage switching under heavy loads and efficient frequency limiting under light loads, achieving a peak efficiency of 97.8% at a 25 V input. Notably, the light load efficiency remained above 90% even at a 50 V input. These contributions significantly advance PSFB-SRC technology, providing robust solutions for high-efficiency MI applications in photovoltaic systems.

ObjectivesSessile serrated lesions (SSLs) are precursors of sporadic colorectal cancer (CRC) and have distinct characteristics compared with conventional adenomas (CAs). Several lifestyle and environmental factors may play critical roles in the development of advanced lesions. Our aim is to describe the features of SSLs and CAs and further explore risk factors for advanced lesions.MethodsThis is an observational study that collected demographic, endoscopic, and histological data from the China-Japan Friendship Hospital among the inpatient population with pathologically reported as SSL or CA between 2015 and 2022. We analyzed the clinicopathology and endoscopic differences between SSL alone, CA alone, and synchronous SSL+CA groups, and identified risk factors using multiple regression analysis.ResultsA total of 9236 polyps from 6598 patients were included in the cohort. Abstract Lack of sufficient cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CD8+ T cells) infiltration and dysfunctional state of CD8+ T cells are considered enormous obstacles to antitumor immunity. Herein, we construct a synergistic nanoplatform to promote CD8+ T cell infiltration in tumors while restoring T cell function by regulating methionine metabolism and activating the STING innate immune pathway. The CRISPR/Cas9 system down-regulates the methionine transporter SLC43A2 and restricts the methionine uptake by tumor cells, thereby relieving the methionine competition pressure of T cells; simultaneously, the released nutrition metal ions activate the cGAS/STING pathway. In this work, the described nanoplatform can enhance the effect of immunotherapy in preclinical cancer models in female mice, enhancing STING pathway mediated immunity and facilitating the development of amino acid metabolic intervention-based cancer therapy.

Porcine neutrophil elastase (PPE) has been demonstrated to have a histone H1 isoform dependent anti-tumour effect. Here, the authors develop a biomimetic nanoplatform combining PPE and elevated histone H1 release induced by porphyrin nuclear localisation signal peptide and demonstrate its efficacy in preclinical cancer models.

Seahorses may have required adaptations to avoid immunological rejection of allogenic embryos by males. The authors show that a single substitution in tlx1 is associated with loss of the spleen in seahorses, and that across the clade, degree of male pregnancy is negatively correlated with immune gene repertoire complexity.

Male pregnancy in syngnathids (seahorses, pipefishes, and sea dragons) is an evolutionary innovation in the animal kingdom. Paternal immune resistance to the fetus is a critical challenge, particularly in seahorses with fully enclosed brood pouches and sophisticated placentas. In this study, comparative genomic analysis revealed that all syngnathid species lost three vertebrate-conserved Toll-like receptors (TLR1, TLR2, and TLR9), of which all play essential roles in immune protection and immune tolerance in the uterus and placenta. Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis showed that the TLR paralog genes including TLR18, TLR25, and TLR21 were highly expressed in the placenta inside the seahorse brood pouch and changed dynamically during the breeding cycle, suggesting the potentially important role of the TLRs during male pregnancy. Furthermore, the immune challenge test in vitro showed a remarkable expression response from all three TLR genes to specific pathogenic antigens, confirming their immune function in seahorse brood pouches. Notably, the altered antigen recognition spectrum of these genes appeared to functionally compensate in part for the lost TLRs, in contrast to that observed in other species. Therefore, we suggest that gene loss and co-option of TLRs may be a typical evolutionary strategy for facilitating paternal immunological adaptation during male pregnancy.

Abstract The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has continued to affect millions of lives worldwide, leading to the urgent need for novel therapeutic strategies. G-quadruplexes (G4s) have been demonstrated to regulate life cycle of multiple viruses. Here, we identify several highly conservative and stable G4s in SARS-CoV-2 and clarify their dual-function of inhibition of the viral replication and translation processes. Furthermore, the cationic porphyrin compound 5,10,15,20-tetrakis-(N-methyl-4-pyridyl)porphine (TMPyP4) targeting SARS-CoV-2 G4s shows excellent antiviral activity, while its N-methyl-2-pyridyl positional isomer TMPyP2 with low affinity for G4 has no effects on SARS-CoV-2 infection, suggesting that the antiviral activity of TMPyP4 attributes to targeting SARS-CoV-2 G4s. In the Syrian hamster and transgenic mouse models of SARS-CoV-2 infection, administration of TMPyP4 at nontoxic doses significantly suppresses SARS-CoV-2 infection, resulting in reduced viral loads and lung lesions. Worth to note, the anti-COVID-19 activity of TMPyP4 is more potent than remdesivir evidenced by both in vitro and in vivo studies. Our findings highlight SARS-CoV-2 G4s as a novel druggable target and the compelling potential of TMPyP4 for COVID-19 therapy. Different from the existing anti-SARS-CoV-2 therapeutic strategies, our work provides another alternative therapeutic tactic for SARS-CoV-2 infection focusing on targeting the secondary structures within SARS-CoV-2 genome, and would open a new avenue for design and synthesis of drug candidates with high selectivity toward the new targets.

Hydrogen energy is regarded as an ideal solution for addressing climate change issues and an indispensable part of future integrated energy systems. The most environmentally friendly hydrogen production method remains water electrolysis, where the electrolyzer constructs the physical interface between electrical energy and hydrogen energy. However, few articles have reviewed the electrolyzer from the perspective of power supply topology and control. This review is the first to discuss the positioning of the electrolyzer power supply in the future integrated energy system. The electrolyzer is reviewed from the perspective of the electrolysis method, the market, and the electrical interface modelling, reflecting the requirement of the electrolyzer for power supply. Various electrolyzer power supply topologies are studied and reviewed. Although the most widely used topology in the current hydrogen production industry is still single-stage AC/DC, the interleaved parallel LLC topology constructed by wideband gap power semiconductors and controlled by the zero-voltage switching algorithm has broad application prospects because of its advantages of high power density, high efficiency, fault tolerance, and low current ripple. Taking into account the development trend of the EL power supply, a hierarchical control framework is proposed as it can manage the operation performance of the power supply itself, the electrolyzer, the hydrogen energy domain, and the entire integrated energy system.

Abstract Background Methylated SDC2 has been proved as a diagnostic marker for human colorectal cancer (CRC), noninvasive stool DNA-based methylation testing also emerges as a novel approach for detecting CRC. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical performance of stool DNA-based SDC2 methylation test by a new qPCR detection reagent for early detection of CRC. Methods A new qPCR detection reagent contained two differentially methylated regions in SDC2 CpG islands for the detection of CRC was used in this study. Performance of the SDC2 methylation detection reagent was evaluated by analyzing limit of detection, precision, and specificity. The effect of interfering substances on assay performance was also tested. 339 subjects (102 CRC patients, 50 patients with advanced adenomas, 39 patients with non-advanced adenomas, 18 colitis patients and 130 normal individuals) from the China-Japan Friendship Hospital were evaluated. Approximately 2.5 g of stool sample was collected from each participant. Stool DNA was extracted and bisulfite-converted, followed by qPCR assay, which contained two pairs of primers for the methylation detection of two fragments of the SDC2 gene (named SDC2-A and SDC2-B). The diagnostic value of this test in CRC was evaluated by calculating receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, and value of the area under the curve (AUC). Results The test kit was able to detect methylated SDC2 in stool DNA samples with concentrations as low as 90 copies/μL in 100% of replicates. The sensitivity for detecting CRC by methylated SDC2-A alone was 85.29% (95% CI 77.03–91.00%) with a specificity of 96.15% (95% CI 91.08–98.58%). The sensitivity by methylated SDC2-B alone was 83.33% (95% CI 74.82–89.42%) with a specificity of 97.69% (95% CI 93.14–99.51%). However, when methylated SDC2-A and methylated SDC2-B were combined, the sensitivity for CRC detection improved to 87.25% (95% CI 79.27–92.53%) with a specificity of 94.62% (95% CI 89.11–97.56%). Further, the detection reagent achieved ROC-AUC 0.874 (95% CI 0.822–0.927) for SDC2-A, 0.906 (95% CI 0.859–0.952) for SDC2-B, and 0.939 (95% CI 0.902–0.977) for SDC2-Combine A&B. Conclusions This study validated the capability of stool DNA-based SDC2 methylation test for early screening of CRC, and combined detection of two fragments of SDC2 gene could improve detection sensitivity.

Ocean antibiotics pose substantial risks to the adaptation and lifespan of marine organisms. Seahorses are unique owing to the occurrence of brood pouches, male pregnancy, and loss of gut-associated lymphatic tissues and spleen, which lead to increased sensitivity to environmental changes. This study evaluated the changes in microbial diversity and immune responses within the gut and brood pouch in the lined seahorse Hippocampus erectus under chronic exposure to environmental levels of triclosan (TCS) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX), which are common antibiotics in coastal regions. The results showed that microbial abundance and diversity within the gut and brood pouch of seahorses were significantly changed following antibiotics treatment, with the expression of core genes involved in immunity, metabolism, and circadian rhythm processes evidently regulated. Notably, the abundance of potential pathogens in brood pouches was considerably increased upon treatment with SMX. Transcriptome analysis revealed that the expression of toll-like receptors, c-type lectins, and inflammatory cytokine genes in brood pouches was significantly upregulated. Notably, some essential genes related to male pregnancy significantly varied after antibiotic treatment, implying potential effects on seahorse reproduction. This study provides insights into the physiological adaptation of marine animals to environmental changes resulting from human activity.

Gastrointestinal cancer is one of the most malignant tumors with high morbidity and mortality, especially colorectal cancer, which has become the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Targeted drug treatment and precise endoscopic resection can significantly improve the overall survival rate and greatly extend the life span. Promising biomedical applications of hydrogels would represent hopeful therapeutic alternatives for patients with different kinds of diseases, particularly providing precise therapy for cancer patients. Although the intersection field of material science and biomedical science has made tremendous advances, major challenges remain. In this review, the application of hydrogel-based technology in cancer precision medicine is the focus of attention, which is the development trend of multidisciplinary cooperation in the future. First, we provide the current clinical landscape of hydrogel applications, and then we highlight precision oncology, including personalized drug treatment and accurate endoscopic intervention. Finally, we discuss major challenges for their clinical translation that have not yet been overcome and future perspectives on cancer precision medicine.

Diffusing fluid from methane seepage in cold seep field creates zones with physicochemical gradients and divergent ecosystems like the mussel beds and clam beds. Three species of brittle stars (Ophiuroidea) were discovered in the Haima cold seep fields, of which Ophiophthalmus serratus and Histampica haimaensis were found on top of or within mussel beds and clam beds, whereas Amphiura sp. was only collected from muds in the clam bed assemblage. Here, we evaluated the genetic signatures of micro-environmental adaptation of brittle stars to cold seep through the comparison of mitogenomes. This study provided two complete mitogenome sequences of O. serratus and Amphiura sp. and compared with those of H. haimaensis and other non-seep species. We found that the split events of the seep and non-seep species were as ancient as the Cretaceous period (∼148–98 Mya). O. serratus and H. haimaensis display rapid residue mutation and mitogenome rearrangements compared to their shallow or deep-sea relatives, in contrast, Amphiura sp. only show medium, regardless of nucleotide mutation rate or mitogenome rearrangement, which may correlate with their adaptation to one or two micro-ecosystems. Furthermore, we identified 10 positively selected residues in ND4 in the Amphiura sp. lineage, suggesting important roles of the dehydrogenase complex in Amphiura sp. adaptive to the cold seep environment. Our results shed light on the different evolutionary strategies during colonization in different micro-environments.

With the acceleration of the urban industrialization process, air pollutant emission has increased sharply, which seriously endangers the ecological environment and human beings. Solar-driven photocatalysis has the broad-spectrum activity for various inorganic to organic pollutants at ambient temperature without harsh reaction conditions, which shows a very broad application prospect in air purification. However, the photocatalysis technology suffers from the unrevealed reaction mechanism and the deactivation of photocatalysts, which severely limits its practical application. Currently, there is still a huge gap between basic research and industrial application in the field of photocatalytic air purification. This review summarizes recent progress on photocatalytic degradation of air pollutants and categorizes them based on the types of photocatalytic materials and air pollutants, with a focus on photocatalytic reaction mechanisms and the application scenarios of photocatalytic air purification to identify this gap. We also critically discussed the major challenges for promoting applications of photocatalytic technology and put forward the development prospect.

Neurohypophysial hormones regulate the reproductive behavior of teleosts; however, their role in the gestation and parturition of ovoviviparous fishes with male pregnancy (syngnathids) remains to be demonstrated. In the present study, the complementary DNA (cDNA) sequences of arginine vasotocin (VT) and isotocin (IT) from the lined seahorse (Hippocampus erectus) were cloned and identified. We observed that the mature core peptides of seahorse VT and IT were conserved among teleosts. In the phylogenic tree, seahorse VT and IT were clustered independently with teleost VT and IT. The tissue distribution patterns of VT and IT were similar, and both were highly expressed in the brain, gills, and gonads. Interestingly, they were also expressed to some extent in the brood pouch. In situ hybridization revealed that VT and IT messenger RNA (mRNA) signals in the brain were mainly located in the preoptic area region of the hypothalamus. Intraperitoneal administration of the VT core peptide to pregnant seahorses induced premature parturition, stimulated gonadotropin release, increased serum estrogen levels, and decreased prolactin secretion. Moreover, VT injection upregulated the mRNA expression of the membrane estrogen receptor in the brood pouch. In summary, neurohypophysial hormones promote premature parturition by regulating estrogen synthesis through the hypothalamus–pituitary–gonad axis.

A new seahorse genome and the re-sequenced genomes of 21 other species shed new light on the evolutionary origin and global dispersal routes of seahorses, and show that bony spines—a key adaptation against predation—probably evolved multiple times via independent substitutions in the bmp3 gene.

Viviparity has originated independently more than 150 times in vertebrates, while the male pregnancy only emerged in Syngnathidae fishes, such as seahorses. The typical male pregnancy seahorses have closed sophisticated brood pouch that act as both uterus and placenta, representing an excellent model system for studying the evolutionary process of paternal immune protection. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the hampII gene family has multiple tandem duplicated genes and shows independent lineage-specific expansion in seahorses, and they had the highest ratio of nonsynonymous substitutions to synonymous substitutions (dN/dS) in the seahorse phylogenetic branch. The expression levels of hampIIs in the brood pouch placenta were significantly higher during pregnancy than non-pregnancy. Both LPS stimulation test in vivo and cytotoxicity test in vitro proved the immunological protection function of hampIIs against pathogen infection in seahorse. Besides, seahorse hampII peptides exhibit weaker antibacterial function, but stronger agglutination and free endotoxin inhibition. We assumed that the modified immunological function seemed to be a trade-off between the resistance to microbial attack and offspring protection. In brief, this study suggests that the rapid co-option of hampIIs contributes to the evolutionary adaption to paternal immune care during male pregnancy.

Few fishes have evolved elevated body temperatures compared with ambient temperatures, and only in opah (Lampris spp) is the entire body affected. To understand the molecular basis of endothermy, we analyzed the opah genome and identified 23 genes with convergent amino acid substitutions across fish, birds, and mammals, including slc8b1, which encodes the mitochondrial Na+/Ca2+ exchanger and is essential for heart function and metabolic heat production. Among endothermic fishes, 44 convergent genes with suggestive metabolic functions were identified, such as glrx3, encoding a crucial protein for hemoglobin maturation. Numerous genes involved in the production and retention of metabolic heat were also found to be under positive selection. Analyses of opah's unique inner-heat-producing pectoral muscle layer (PMI), an evolutionary key innovation, revealed that many proteins were co-opted from dorsal swimming muscles for thermogenesis and oxidative phosphorylation. Thus, the opah genome provides valuable resources and opportunities to uncover the genetic basis of thermal adaptations in fish. Abstract Background The evolution of male pregnancy is the most distinctive characteristic of syngnathids, and their specialized life history traits make syngnathid species excellent model species for many issues in biological evolution. However, the origin of syngnathids and the evolutionary divergence time of different syngnathid species remain poorly resolved. Comprehensive phylogenetic studies of the Syngnathidae will provide critical evidence to elucidate their origin, evolution, and dispersal patterns. Results We sequenced the mitochondrial genomes of eight syngnathid species in this study, and the estimated divergence times suggested that syngnathids diverged from other teleosts approximately 48.8 Mya during the Eocene period. Selection analysis showed that many mitochondrial genes of syngnathids exhibited significantly lower Ka/Ks values than those of other teleosts. The two most frequently used codons in syngnathid fishes were different from those in other teleosts, and a greater proportion of the mitochondrial simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were distributed in non-coding sequences in syngnathids compared with other teleosts. Conclusions Our study indicated that syngnathid fishes experienced an adaptive radiation process during the early explosion of species. Syngnathid mitochondrial OXPHOS genes appear to exhibit depressed Ka/Ks ratios compared with those of other teleosts, and this may suggest that their mitogenomes have experienced strong selective constraints to eliminate deleterious mutations.

Summary: Seahorses epitomize the exuberance of evolution. They have the unique characteristic of male pregnancy, which includes the carrying of many embryos in a brood pouch that incubates and nourishes the embryos, similar to the mammalian placenta. However, the regulatory networks underlying brood pouch formation and pregnancy remain largely unknown. In this study, comparative transcriptomic and metabolomic profiling on the lined seahorse Hippocampus erectus, with unformed, newly formed, and pregnant brood pouches identified a total of 141 and 2,533 differentially expressed genes together with 73 and 121 significantly differential metabolites related to brood pouch formation and pregnancy, respectively. Specifically, integrative omics analysis revealed that retinoic acid (RA) synthesis and signaling pathway played essential roles in the formation of the brood pouch and pregnancy. RA might function upstream of testosterone and progesterone, thereby directly influencing brood pouch formation by regulating the expression of fshr and cyp7a1. Our results also revealed that RA regulates antioxidant defenses, particularly during male pregnancy. Alternatively, pregnancy caused a consistent decrease in RA, canthaxanthin, astaxanthin, and glutathione synthetase, and an increase in susceptibility to oxidative stress, which may balance brood pouch development and reproduction in seahorses and pave the way to successful gestation.

In order to effectively detect wireless network intrusion behavior, a combined wireless network intrusion detection model based on deep learning was proposed. First, a feature database was generated by feature mapping, one-hot encoding, and normalization processing. Then, we built a deep belief network (DBN) with the multi-restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM) and the back propagation (BP) network. The BP network layer was connected as an auxiliary layer to the end of the RBM. The back-propagation algorithm was used to fine-tune the weight of the multi-restricted Boltzmann machine. Finally, the support vector machine (SVM) was used to train the detection method. After training, the intrusion detection model, which had the DBN-SVM detection method, was determined. The experimental results show that the detection model has good intrusion detection performance.

Reducing maternal mortality ratio (MMR) is of great concern worldwide. After the implementation of the two-child policy in 2013, the number of live births and the proportion of high-risk pregnancies both increased, and these bring new challenges to the reduction of MMR. China implemented a package of nationwide strategies in April 2016, the Five Strategies for Maternal and Newborn Safety (FSMNS). The FSMNS consists of five components: (1) pregnancy risk screening and assessment strategy, (2) case-by-case management strategy for high-risk pregnancies, (3) referral and treatment strategy for critically ill pregnant women and newborns, (4) reporting strategy for maternal deaths (and 5) accountability strategy. To better implement the FSMNS, China formulated a unified pregnancy risk screening form. After risk assessment and classification, medical records of all the pregnant women are labelled with green (low risk), yellow (moderate risk), orange (high risk), red (highest risk) or purple (infectious disease) for tailored management. By the implementation of FSMNS, China has already kept the MMR stable and cause it to enter a controlled decline. MMR in China has declined by 21.1%, from 23.2 per 100 000 live births in 2013 to 18.3 per 100 000 live births in 2018. The country’s challenges and experience in reducing the MMR could provide useful lessons for other countries.

Leptin is an essential hormone for the regulation of energy metabolism and food intake in vertebrate animals. To better understand the physiological roles of leptin in nutrient regulation in paternal ovoviviparous fish (family Syngnathidae), the present study cloned the full-length of leptin-a and leptin receptor (lepr) genes in lined seahorse (Hippocampus erectus). Results showed that there was a 576-bp intron between two exons in leptin-a gene but no leptin-b gene in seahorse. Although the primary amino acid sequence conservation of seahorse leptin-a was very low, the 3-D structure modeling of seahorse leptin-a revealed strong conservation of tertiary structure with other vertebrates. Seahorse leptin-a mRNA was highly expressed in brain, whereas lepr mRNA was mainly expressed in ovary and gill. Interestingly, both leptin-a and lepr mRNA were expressed in the brood pouch of male seahorse, suggesting the leptin system plays a role during the male pregnancy. Physiological experiments showed that the expression of hepatic leptin-a and lepr mRNA in unfed seahorses was significantly higher than that in those fed 100%, as well as 60%, of their food during the fasting stage, showing that seahorse might initiate the leptin system to regulate its energy metabolism while starving. Moreover, the expression of leptin-a in the brood pouch of pregnant seahorse was significantly upregulated compared with non-pregnant seahorse, whereas the expression of lepr was downregulated, suggesting that the leptin system might be involved in the male pregnancy. In conclusion, the leptin system plays a role in the energy metabolism and food intake, and might provide new insights into molecular regulation of male pregnancy in seahorse.

The kisspeptin/GPR54 system plays a crucial role in the regulation of the reproductive axis in vertebrates. Male pregnancy and ovoviviparity are special reproductive phenomena among vertebrates. To better understand the neuroendocrine mechanisms of male pregnancy, cDNAs encoding kiss2 and GPR54 were cloned and functionally characterized from the lined seahorse, Hippocampus erectus, an ovoviviparous teleost with male pregnancy. The core mature peptide of seahorse Kiss2 is high conserved among seahorses, but unique among vertebrate Kiss orthologs. In the phylogenic analysis, the seahorse Kiss clustered with the teleost Kiss2 clade. The kiss2 transcripts were shown to be widely expressed in various tissues, notably in the brain and gonad of the seahorse, while GPR54-2 mRNA was expressed exclusively in the brain. In addition, kiss2 mRNA found in male seahorse brain tissue increased significantly at the early pubertal stage, and decreased significantly during pregnancy. Intraperitoneal administration of seahorse Kiss2-10 to sexual mature male seahorses demonstrated to stimulate lutropin β (LHβ) and follitropin β (FSHβ) release and increased serum testosterone levels. In summary, we first identified the kisspeptin/GPR54 system in an ovoviviparous fish with male pregnancy, which might be involved in the regulation of the reproductive functions of pubertal onset, gonadal development, and male pregnancy via regulating the synthesis of both gonadotropic hormone (GTH) and testosterone.

Inshore-offshore migration occurs frequently in seahorse species, either because of prey opportunities or because they are driven by reproduction, and variations in water temperature may dramatically change migratory seahorse behavior and physiology. The present study investigated the behavioral and physiological responses of the lined seahorse Hippocampus erectus under thermal stress and evaluated the potential effects of different temperatures on its reproduction. The results showed that the thermal tolerance of the seahorses was time dependent. Acute thermal stress (30°C, 2–10 h) increased the basal metabolic rate (breathing rate) and the expression of stress response genes (Hsp genes) significantly and further stimulated seahorse appetite. Chronic thermal treatment (30°C, 4 weeks) led to a persistently higher basal metabolic rate, higher stress response gene expression and higher mortality rates, indicating that the seahorses could not acclimate to chronic thermal stress and might experience massive mortality rates due to excessively high basal metabolic rates and stress damage. Additionally, no significant negative effects on gonad development or reproductive endocrine regulation genes were observed in response to chronic thermal stress, suggesting that seahorse reproductive behavior could adapt to higher-temperature conditions during migration and within seahorse breeding grounds. In conclusion, this simulation experiment indicates that temperature variations during inshore-offshore migration have no effect on reproduction, but promote significantly high basal metabolic rates and stress responses. Therefore, we suggest that the observed high tolerance of seahorse reproduction is in line with the inshore-offshore reproductive migration pattern of lined seahorses. BACKGROUND: To identify social factors determining the frequency of community health service (CHS) utilization among CHS users in China. METHODS: Nationwide cross-sectional surveys were conducted in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. A total of 86,116 CHS visitors selected from 35 cities were interviewed. Descriptive analysis and multinomial logistic regression analysis were employed to analyze characteristics of CHS users, frequency of CHS utilization, and the socio-demographic and socio-economic factors influencing frequency of CHS utilization. RESULTS: Female and senior CHS clients were more likely to make 3-5 and ≥6 CHS visits (as opposed to 1-2 visits) than male and young clients, respectively. CHS clients with higher education were less frequent users than individuals with primary education or less in 2008 and 2009; in later surveys, CHS clients with higher education were the more frequent users. The association between frequent CHS visits and family income has changed significantly between 2008 and 2011. In 2011, income status did not have a discernible effect on the likelihood of making ≥6 CHS visits, and it only had a slight effect on making 3-5 CHS visits. CONCLUSION: CHS may play an important role in providing primary health care to meet the demands of vulnerable populations in China. Over time, individuals with higher education are increasingly likely to make frequent CHS visits than individuals with primary school education or below. The gap in frequency of CHS utilization among different economic income groups decreased from 2008 to 2011.
