14. Comparing Student Performance and Satisfaction between Face-to-Face and Online Education of a Science Course in a Liberal Arts University: A Quasi-Experiment with Course Delivery Mode Fully Manipulated

Abstract

This study presents a quasi-experiment to assess differences in student performance and satisfaction between two different delivery modes--online and face-to-face education. We collected data from 747 (373 face-to-face cohort, 374 online cohort) students enrolled in a general education science course at a liberal arts university. There was no self-selection of delivery mode by students, since this course is required, and delivery mode of one of the cohorts changed to online education due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. We compare the learning outcomes of the two major course assessments (midterm test and research project) and student perception between the two delivery modes using quantitative and qualitative analyses. There was no statistical difference in the student scores on the development of medium-order analytical skills (i.e., midterm test) between the two delivery modes. However, online students scored statistically higher on the development of high-order analytical skills (i.e., research project), but they scored statistically lower on measures of student satisfaction. Our study suggests that online education, although currently unfavored by students, is equally or more effective in the achievement of the learning outcomes than face-to-face education.

45. Astrocyte-secreted IL-33 mediates homeostatic synaptic plasticity in the adult hippocampus

Abstract

Hippocampal synaptic plasticity is important for learning and memory formation. Homeostatic synaptic plasticity is a specific form of synaptic plasticity that is induced upon prolonged changes in neuronal activity to maintain network homeostasis. While astrocytes are important regulators of synaptic transmission and plasticity, it is largely unclear how they interact with neurons to regulate synaptic plasticity at the circuit level. Here, we show that neuronal activity blockade selectively increases the expression and secretion of IL-33 (interleukin-33) by astrocytes in the hippocampal cornu ammonis 1 (CA1) subregion. This IL-33 stimulates an increase in excitatory synapses and neurotransmission through the activation of neuronal IL-33 receptor complex and synaptic recruitment of the scaffold protein PSD-95. We found that acute administration of tetrodotoxin in hippocampal slices or inhibition of hippocampal CA1 excitatory neurons by optogenetic manipulation increases IL- 33 expression in CA1 astrocytes. Furthermore, IL-33 administration in vivo promotes the formation of functional excitatory synapses in hippocampal CA1 neurons, whereas conditional knockout of IL- 33 in CA1 astrocytes decreases the number of excitatory synapses therein. Importantly, blockade of IL-33 and its receptor signaling in vivo by intracerebroventricular administration of its decoy receptor inhibits homeostatic synaptic plasticity in CA1 pyramidal neurons and impairs spatial memory formation in mice. These results collectively reveal an important role of astrocytic IL-33 in mediating the negative-feedback signaling mechanism in homeostatic synaptic plasticity, providing insights into how astrocytes maintain hippocampal network homeostasis. © 2021 National Academy of Sciences. Abstract

Using data from China's banks between 1995 and 2017, we employ propensity score matching and difference in differences approaches to investigate the effects of going public on bank risks, including insolvency risk, capital risk, liquidity risk, asset quality, credit risk, and prudential behavior, and obtain the following results. First, bank risks (except for insolvency risk) are improved after going public. Second, going public has stronger effects if a bank is listed on more than one stock exchange. Finally, both the single-listing effects and cross-listing effects of going public on bank risks are stronger in state-owned banks than in non-state-owned banks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Using Chinese data from 2004 to 2016, we investigate the effects of business models on bank risk before, during and after financial crisis. Three main results emerge. First, insolvency risk and ROA volatility significantly increase if banks increase their share of non-interest income, and this relationship mainly appears during and after financial crisis. Second, a higher non-deposit funding share results in lower capital risk and credit risk and higher asset quality. However, these effects disappear after financial crisis. Finally, further analyses show that the effects of non-interest income on bank risk are mainly from assets-based non-interest income, and the effects of non-deposit funding on bank risk come primarily from money-market and short-term funding.
