13. Directional freezing of binary colloidal suspensions: A model for size fractionation of graphene oxide

Abstract

The performance of graphene oxide(GO)-based materials strongly depends on the lateral size and size distribution of GO nanosheets. Various methods are employed to prepare GO nanosheets with a narrow size distribution. One of the promising method was proposed recently by directionally freezing of a GO aqueous dispersion at a controlled growth rate of the freezing front. We develop a theoretic model of binary colloids suspension, incorporating both the moving freezing boundary and the preferential adsorption of colloidal particles to the ice phase. We numerically solve the coupled diffusion equations and present state diagrams of size fractionation. Selective trapping of colloids according to their size can be achieved by a suitable choice of the experimental parameters, such as the adsorption rates and the freezing speed., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Soft Matter

Abstract

As a biodegradable and biocompatible protein derived from collagen, gelatin has been extensively exploited as a fundamental component of biological scaffolds and drug delivery systems for precise medicine. The easily engineered gelatin holds great promise in formulating various delivery systems to protect and enhance the efficacy of drugs for improving the safety and effectiveness of numerous pharmaceuticals. The remarkable biocompatibility and adjustable mechanical properties of gelatin permit the construction of active 3D scaffolds to accelerate the regeneration of injured tissues and organs. In this Review, we delve into diverse strategies for fabricating and functionalizing gelatin-based structures, which are applicable to gene and drug delivery as well as tissue engineering. We emphasized the advantages of various gelatin derivatives, including methacryloyl gelatin, polyethylene glycol-modified gelatin, thiolated gelatin, and alendronate-modified gelatin. These derivatives exhibit excellent physicochemical and biological properties, allowing the fabrication of tailor-made structures for biomedical applications. Additionally, we explored the latest developments in the modulation of their physicochemical properties by combining additive materials and manufacturing platforms, outlining the design of multifunctional gelatin-based micro-, nano-, and macrostructures. While discussing the current limitations, we also addressed the challenges that need to be overcome for clinical translation, including high manufacturing costs, limited application scenarios, and potential immunogenicity. This Review provides insight into how the structural and chemical engineering of gelatin can be leveraged to pave the way for significant advancements in biomedical applications and the improvement of patient outcomes.

32. Biomimetic Antigravity Water Transport and Remote Harvesting Powered by Sunlight

Abstract

Antigravity water transport plays important roles in various applications ranging from agriculture, industry, and environmental engineering. In natural trees, ubiquitous water-flow over 100 m high from roots through the hierarchical xylem to leaves is driven by sunlight-powered continuous evaporation and the negative pressure. Inspired by natural trees, herein an artificial trunk-leaf system is built up to structurally mimic natural trees for a continuous antigravity water delivery. The artificial tree consists of directional microchannels for antigravity water transport, and a top leaf-like hybrid hydrogel that are acts as continuous solar steam evaporator, plus a purposely engineered steam collector. It is found that continuous uniform microchannels of acetylated chitin optimize and enhance capillary rise (approximate to 37 cm at 300 min) and reduce vertical water transport resistance. A remote water harvesting, and purification is performed with a high rate of 1.6 kg m(-2) h(-1) and 184 cm in height under 1 sun irradiation and the collection efficiency up to 100% by evaporative cooling technique. It is envisioned that the basic design principles underlying the artificial tree can be used to transform solar energy into potential energy.

Abstract

Solar anti-icing/deicing (SADI) is an economically-efficient method of harvesting solar energy as heat for melting and removing ice. However, SADI materials with superior sunlight harvesting performances and high deicing rate remain elusive. Herein, the successful preparation of hierarchically macro/micro-structured polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) films was demonstrated based on a facile dual-template method. The as-fabricated films exhibited efficient broadband solar light absorption and high energy transfer efficiency (90.4%). When used as anti-icing/deicing materials, these SADI films exhibited excellent anti-icing/deicing performances under one sun illumination (qi= 1.0 kW m−2), i.e., long freezing delay time (tD> 2 h) and ultra-low deicing strength (∼0.2 kPa) even at an ultra-low temperature of −40 °C. The SADI surfaces showed a high deicing rate (>1.05 kg m−2h−1) under various simulated realistic conditions over a wide range of geographical differences. Moreover, all the frost, rime, and glaze (ice thickness < 2 mm) could be easily removed within 300 s.

Abstract

We show graphene oxide (GO) greatly suppresses the growth and recrystallization of ice crystals, and ice crystals display a hexagonal shape in the GO dispersion. Preferred adsorption of GO on the ice crystal surface in liquid water leads to curved ice crystal surface. Therefore, the growth of ice crystal is suppressed owing to the Gibbs-Thompson effect, that is, the curved surface lowers the freezing temperature. Molecular dynamics simulation analysis reveals that oxidized groups on the basal plane of GO form more hydrogen bonds with ice in comparison with liquid water because of the honeycomb hexagonal scaffold of graphene, giving a molecular-level mechanism for controlling ice formation. Application of GO for cryopreservation shows that addition of only 0.01 wt % of GO to a culture medium greatly increases the motility (from 24.3 % to 71.3 %) of horse sperms. Abstract

Photothermal hydrogels (PTHs) are considered next‐generation biomaterials as they offer remotely defined biophysical information of the extracellular milieu. PTHs allow precise and non‐genetic control for the regeneration of native tissues, which is the ultimate goal of tissue engineering (TE). Molecular and physical properties of PTHs, such as components, structural configurations, and mechanical characteristics, collectively serve as determinants for understanding the dynamic tissue response and clinical translation. PTHs have entered a period of fruition due to the development of numerous manufacturing technologies and polymeric matrices. Herein, this review comprehensively and meticulously elucidates the mechanisms of regenerative therapeutics underlying the design and fabrication of PTHs. Recent advances in the photothermal principles and various categories of photothermal agents (PTAs) have been extensively discussed. Vital components and structures of PTHs are summarized to enable efficacious and precise therapeutic energy delivery. Emerging applications of PTHs in TE are also demonstrated, which expand the strategies for the intrinsic regeneration of injured tissues. Then deliberate the structural and chemical engineering of PTHs to enhance prognosis while highlighting the challenges associated with clinical translation.
