Abstract

Glycerol (G) is the major co-product in the transesterification process of biodiesel. As clean energy demand increases, the production of G also increases and new ways of re-using it are needed. In the last decade, some experimental studies claimed that G and its derivative, malonic acid (MA), could be used as corrosion inhibitors. Yet, presently, there is little evidence of it and more studies are needed to confirm that G and MA could have a good performance in metal protection. The present work aims to study the reactivity of G and MA, since reactivity and inhibition are intimately linked. The density functional theory (DFT) at the B3YLP/6-31G** level of theory was used to study the reactivity of both molecules. The global and local quantum parameters derived were used to assess the reactivity of both molecules. Analysis of the calculated reactivity descriptors suggest that G and MA should exhibit an acceptable corrosion efficiency, but MA showed have a greater potential as a corrosion inhibitor.

Abstract

En el presente trabajo se evaluó el funcionamiento de la protección catódica por anodo galvánico en armaduras de acero embebidas en hormigón, simulando los pilotes de un puente en medio marino. El ánodo consistió de metalizado de cinc aplicado por termo-rociado en la superficie del hormigón. El estudio se llevó a cabo en dosseries de muestras de hormigón reforzado con relación agua/cemento 0.65, sin (0%) y con (3.5%) de cloruro des odio adicionado al agua de amasado. Se midió periodicamente el potencial de corrosión de media celda durante 720 días y se hizo un registro fotográfico de la interfase acero-hormigón. El análisis de los productos de oxidación del ánodo en la interfase cinc-hormigón se llevó a cabo con difracción de Rayos X. Los resultados indican que el sistema de protección galvánica no alcanzó los niveles deprotección esperados, comportamiento atribuible a la resistividad del hormigón y la disminución de la actividad del ánodo de cinc por acumulación de productos de reacción. Asi mismo, se observó que como consecuencia de no alcanzar niveles de polarización adecuados, se propició la formación de herrumbre verde, “green rust”, compuesto nocivo para la durabilidad de estructuras de hormigón reforzado expuestas en un medio marino.

The objective was to analyse the trends in AATD diagnosis during the last 5 years in a Spanish AATD reference laboratory.Methods: This was a retrospective revision of all alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) determinations undertaken in our laboratory from 2015 to 2019. We analysed the number of AAT determinations performed and described the characteristics of the individuals tested, as well as the medical specialties and the reasons for requesting AAT determination.Results: A total of 3507 determinations were performed, of which 5.5% corresponded to children. A significant increase in the number of AAT determinations was observed from 349 in 2015 to 872 in 2019. Among the samples, 57.6% carried an intermediate AATD (50– 119 mg/dL) and 2.4% severe deficiency (< 50 mg/dL). The most frequent phenotype in severe AATD individuals was PI*ZZ (78.5%), and aminotransferase levels were above normal in around 43% of children and 30% of adults. Respiratory specialists requested the highest number of AAT determinations (31.5%) followed by digestive diseases and internal medicine (27.5%) and primary care physicians (19.7%). The main reason for AAT determination in severe AATD adults was chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (41.7%), but reasons for requesting AAT determination were not reported in up to 41.7% of adults and 58.3% of children.Conclusion: There is an increase in the frequency of AATD testing despite the rate of AAT determination remaining low. Awareness about AAT is probably increasing, but the reason for testing is not always clear.Keywords: alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, diagnosis, screening, lung disease

Abstract

Copper is the main component in Cu-Ni alloys recommended for sea water applications. This work presents the electrochemical behaviour of copper in presence of different sea water components and its influence on the corrosion attack. The combined action of chloride and sulphate ions are the main responsible factor for the localized corrosion attack in the form of pitting. A significant parabolic relation exists between the critical pitting potential (Ep) and the weight ratio of chloride to sulphate (Cl-/SO42-) ions. Therefore sulphate ions are an important component for pitting corrosion of copper. El cobre es el elemento principal de las aleaciones Cu-Ni recomendadas para aplicaciones marinas. En este trabajo se presenta el comportamiento electroquímico del cobre con los diferentes componentes del agua de mar y el efecto de estos sobre la forma de ataque del cobre. Se observó que los iones cloruro, en unión con los iones sulfato, son los principales causantes del fenómeno de corrosión por picaduras, existiendo, además, una relación significativa entre el potencial crítico de picado (Ep) y la relación (Cl-/SO42-) de tipo parabólico, lo cual pone de manifiesto la importancia del ion sulfato en el fenómeno de corrosión por picaduras como promotor de este tipo de mecanismo.

Abstract

Copper is a widely used material in water pipe systems. It is subjected to the action of chloride ions, which cause pitting corrosion. This work proposes a possible mechanism for the pitting corrosion of copper in chloride solutions. It was determined using electrochemical techniques such as polarization curves, impedance spectroscopy and electrochemical noise. El cobre es un material frecuentemente empleado para la construcción de tuberías, sujeto a la acción de los cloruros, que ocasionan corrosión por picaduras. El presente trabajo busca determinar un posible mecanismo de corrosión por picaduras en el cobre por la acción de los cloruros, apoyándose en la información que ofrecen las técnicas electroquímicas de polarización, espectroscopia de impedancia faradaica y ruido electroquímico.
