An animal's diet breadth is a central aspect of its life history, yet the factors determining why some species have narrow dietary breadths (specialists) and others have broad dietary breadths (generalists) remain poorly understood. This challenge is pronounced in herbivorous insects due to incomplete host plant data across many taxa and regions. Here, we develop and validate machine learning models to predict pollen diet breadth in bees, using a bee phylogeny and occurrence data for 682 bee species native to the United States, aiming to better understand key drivers. We found that pollen specialist bees made an average of 72.9% of their visits to host plants and could be predicted with high accuracy (mean 94%). Our models predicted generalist bee species, which made up a minority of the species in our dataset, with lower accuracy (mean 70%). The models tested on spatially and phylogenetically blocked data revealed that the most informative predictors of diet breadth are plant phylogenetic diversity, bee species' geographic range, and regional abundance. Our findings also confirm that range size is predictive of diet breadth and that both male and female specialist bees mostly visit their host plants. Overall, our results suggest we can use visitation data to predict specialist bee species in regions and for taxonomic groups where diet breadth is unknown, though predicting generalists may be more challenging. These methods can thus enhance our understanding of plant-pollinator interactions, leading to improved conservation outcomes and a better understanding of the pollination services bees provide.

Comparisons between contemporary and historic surveys are useful in assessing how fish assemblages respond to anthropogenic stressors. When these stressors degrade aquatic environments, assemblages often experience biotic homogenization. The Strawberry River flows through the Ozarks of northern Arkansas and has been subject to both pasture land use conversion and constructed waterbodies which can degrade aquatic environments and alter fish assemblages. We investigated how fish assemblages in the Strawberry River have changed over a 35‐year time span in response to pasture land use and constructed waterbodies. We found evidence of both taxonomic and functional homogenization of fish assemblages from the mid‐1980s to 2019. This shift towards homogenization was primarily driven by increases in both site occurrence and abundance of generalist centrarchid species (associated with land use practices) and headwater specialist species (likely related to increased intermittency upstream). We created a composite variable using principal component analysis that represented pasture land use and constructed water body metrics because of their close relationship with each other. We found evidence of early functional differentiation associated with this composite variable; however, we found that over time fish assemblages ultimately experienced greater levels of homogenization associated with this same variable. This pattern of biotic homogenization associated with species additions suggests the Strawberry River is at a tipping point along a subsidy stress gradient, and in the future, we expect to see losses of specialist endemic species if conservation actions are not taken. Understanding the extent to which organisms exhibit specialization when interacting with or relying on distinct aspects of their biotic and abiotic environment is a central tenet in ecology and evolution. Despite the relevance of the concept and theoretical advances, specialization has and continues to be ambiguously defined. Here we review the uses of the term ‘specialist' using as a case study the field of frugivory and seed dispersal. Our goal is to identify points of clarity and ambiguity to promote a more consistent and coherent use of specialization in plant–frugivore interactions and similar fields. Frugivory and seed dispersal research presents a good case study because specialist–generalist concepts have guided the theoretical framework of the field since its beginnings. Our analyses show that definitions of ‘specialist frugivores' have changed over time and tend to vary also depending on the studied animal taxa, such as birds, bats, or primates. At least some of the ambiguity arises from defining specialization at different scales such as evolutionary versus ecological timeframes. More critical is the finding that specialization is commonly used on frugivore species without knowledge or measure of the biological dependance of the species on specific types of fruit resources. Specifically, we found that most studies use specialization to describe fruit‐preference patterns that – unlike specialization constrained by evolution – can be variable and context‐dependent. We call for increased awareness to distinguish between contextual cases of preferential resource‐uses, from specialized interactions that limit populations and singularly define species. Introduction: Aphids are phloem sap-sucking insects and are a serious destructive pest of several crop plants. Aphids are categorized as "generalists" or "specialists" depending on their host range. Myzus persicae (Sulz.) is a generalist aphid with a broad host range while Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt.), a specialist aphid, has a narrow host range. Aphid infestation involves several sequential stages including host recognition and selection, overcoming primary plant defence barriers, feeding on phloem sap and detoxification of host defence responses. Information on the molecular basis of variations between generalist and specialist aphids with reference to the above processes is limited. Methods: In the current study, we generated transcriptome data of M. persicae and L. erysimi from adult and nymph stages and analysed the differential expression of genes between adults of the generalist and specialist aphid and similarly, between nymphs of the two aphid species. We categorized these differentially expressed genes into nine different categories namely, chemosensation-related, plant cell wall degrading enzymes, detoxification-related, digestive enzymes, peptidases, carbohydrate-, lipid-, amino acid-metabolism and reproduction. We also identified putative effector molecules in both M. persicae and L. erysimi from the transcriptome data, Results and discussion: Gene expression analysis identified 7688 and 8194 differentially expressed unigenes at adult and nymph stages, respectively of M. persicae and L. erysimi. M. persicae showed significantly higher levels of expression in a greater number of unigenes (5112 in adults and 5880 in nymphs) in contrast to the specialist, L. erysimi (2576 in adults and 2314 in nymphs) in both developmental stages. In addition, M. persicae displayed a greater number (350 in adults and 331 in nymphs) of upregulated unigenes involved in important processes such as host recognition, plant cell wall degradation, detoxification, digestion and metabolism, which correlate with its dynamic and polyphagous nature in contrast to the specialist (337 in adults and 251 in nymphs). We also observed a greater number of putative effectors in M. persicae (948 in adults and 283 in nymphs) than L. erysimi (797 in adults and 245 in nymphs). Based on our analysis, we conclude that the generalist aphid, M. persicae has a more diversified and stronger arsenal of genes that influence its polyphagous feeding behaviour and effective response to plant defence mechanisms against insect-herbivory. Differences in parasite infection patterns between hosts can be influenced by numerous factors placed into 2 categories: encounter filters (precontact) and compatibility filters (postcontact). The influence of these factors in shaping the patterns of parasite infection was investigated in Lake Holiday, a 100-ha lake in northern Virginia, U.S.A. In total, 1,586 fish in the family Centrarchidae, encompassing 4 species—Lepomis macrochirus, Lepomis cyanellus, Lepomis auritus, and Micropterus salmoides—were collected and necropsied over a 7-yr period. The length, weight, age, stomach contents, and counts of 2 diplostomid parasites—Posthodiplostomum cf. centrarchi and Uvulifer cf. ambloplitis—were recorded. The prevalence and intensity of P. cf. centrarchi differed between host species, which was likely influenced by both encounter and compatibility filters. However, U. cf. ambloplitis infection showed significant correlations with the prevalence, but not the intensity, of infection. This indicates that encounter filters may play a larger role in shaping the infection patterns of U. cf. ambloplitis than compatibility filters. Furthermore, the infection pattern differences between host species exhibited by P. cf. centrarchi indicate that the parasite species complex are likely specialists, whereas U. cf. ambloplitis represents a true generalist parasite because there are no apparent differences in compatibility between hosts. In addition, P. cf. centrarchi infections follow distinct patterns in the tissues that they infect, thereby allowing single organ counts, particularly the liver, to be proxies for total parasite infection, whereas the correlations in U. cf. ambloplitis are less predictable and do not allow for single tissue infections to be reliable indicators for total parasite load. This occurs due to the limited absorption of most antibiotics, leading to their release into the environment through feces and urine. However, the response of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms and their ARGs in grasslands to prolonged grazing, as well as the primary microbial taxa driving the ARG distribution, remain poorly understood, especially within various microhabitats. In this study, we characterized ARGs in the phyllosphere, litter, and soil after decades of livestock grazing in a meadow steppe. We particularly focused on identifying the major members of the microbial community influencing ARGs and the distinction between microbial generalists and specialists. Results Our findings indicate that a core set of ARGs accounted for 90% of the abundance in this plant-soil ecosystem. While the soil exhibited the highest ARG abundance, the phyllosphere, and litter displayed higher ARG diversity and diverse distribution patterns after overgrazing. Grazing increased ARG abundance by elevating the proportion of core ARGs and suppressing stochastic ARGs in the phyllosphere and litter, while it had little effect on the ARGs in the soil. Additionally, microbial generalist abundance increased, but specialist abundance decreased in the phyllosphere and litter, with no effect in the soil, under grazed conditions. Ultimately, microbial microhabitats and grazing influenced ARG community characteristics through direct (i.e., feces and other exogenous ARG input) and indirect (i.e., trampling and selective feeding) effects on nutrient availability, microbial community composition, and mobile genetic elements. Environmental transitions, such as the salinity divide separating marine and fresh waters, shape biodiversity over both shallow and deep timescales, opening up new niches and creating opportunities for accelerated speciation and adaptive radiation. Understanding the genetics of environmental adaptation is central to understanding how organisms colonise and subsequently diversify in new habitats. We used time‐resolved transcriptomics to contrast the hyposalinity stress responses of two diatoms. Skeletonema marinoi has deep marine ancestry but has recently invaded brackish waters. Cyclotella cryptica has deep freshwater ancestry and can withstand a much broader salinity range. Skeletonema marinoi is less adept at mitigating even mild salinity stress compared to Cyclotella cryptica, which has distinct mechanisms for rapid mitigation of hyposaline stress and long‐term growth in low salinity. We show that the cellular mechanisms underlying low salinity tolerance, which has allowed diversification across freshwater habitats worldwide, includes elements that are both conserved and variable across the diatom lineage. The balance between ancestral and lineage‐specific environmental responses in phytoplankton have shaped marine–freshwater transitions on evolutionary timescales and, on contemporary timescales, will affect which lineages survive and adapt to changing ocean conditions. ABSTRACT Aim Location Time Period Methods Major Taxa Studies Results Main Conclusions Given that microbial communities normally comprise generalist and specialist species, there have been limited efforts to estimate the contribution of these sub‐communities to bacterial biogeography regarding ecological assembly processes and nestedness structure. To resolve this gap, we studied the spatial distribution of bacterioplankton communities and their generalist and specialist sub‐communities, as well as the underlying assembly processes.Six lakes span three climate zones in northern China.September 2021.By separately analysing the generalist and specialist sub‐communities from the whole communities, we investigated the relationships between sub‐communities and the entire communities in terms of distance‐decay pattern, nestedness, and assembly processes. As such, we assessed the contribution of generalist and specialist sub‐communities to the biogeographic patterns of the whole communities.Bacterial community.Generalist sub‐communities were more diverse but less abundant than specialist sub‐communities. In line with the whole communities, both types of sub‐communities exhibited distance‐decay relationships at the regional scale, with the slope of specialists being steeper than that of generalists. Additionally, generalist sub‐communities and whole communities also exhibited similar nestedness patterns, in which assemblages from saline water were the subset of those from freshwater. In terms of assembly processes, generalist sub‐communities and whole communities were strongly regulated by homogeneous selection, whereas specialist sub‐communities were mainly shaped by dispersal limitation. More importantly, there was a transition from stochastic to deterministic assembly processes for generalist sub‐communities and whole communities and generalist sub‐communities with increasing total dissolved solids.Relative to the specialists, the assembly processes and nestedness pattern were more altered if the generalists were absent, which implies the higher contribution of generalist sub‐communities on the biogeography of whole communities at the regional scale. BACKGROUND: Difficulty attracting physicians to work in rural and remote areas is a worldwide problem. Specific to pediatrics, barriers to recruitment include burdensome on-call rosters, a lack of career opportunities for partners and professional isolation. METHODS: To examine attitudes to working in a community hospital in Ireland, a mixed-methods sequential analysis approach was undertaken. Pediatricians-in training (70) and attending community pediatricians (25) completed surveys. Six semistructured interviews were used to triangulate survey results. RESULTS: Most trainees planned to stay in Ireland (66/70), with five (eight%) stating that a career in a community hospital was their first preference. Personal factors such as a partner's career prospects and closeness to family and friends were the most important deterrents to working in a community hospital for trainees. Both trainees and attendings were concerned regarding professional isolation. Trainees were concerned about the poor reputation of community units. This converged with attendings feeling their role was not adequately respected, even though their job had more variability and exposure to emergencies, with less support, than working in a large center. Both groups agreed that targeted postgraduate training pathways and better training opportunities within Ireland were the best way to improve recruitment. Financial bonuses were not highly ranked as potential incentives. Motivators for considering a career in community units included the desire to make an impact and to build something new. Concerns about job satisfaction, professional recognition, and limited support for service development were prevalent. CONCLUSION: This study reveals critical challenges and motivators influencing the shortage of pediatricians in Irish community units. Addressing these issues requires a multifaceted approach, incorporating targeted training, support structures, and recognition to enhance recruitment and retention in these underserved areas. Although there are benefits to being a generalist, the majority of herbivorous insects are diet specialists. This raises the question whether the ability to reproduce on various host plants hides an unknown ecological optimum. Our study investigated the existence of such an ecological optimum in the fungus‐farming ambrosia beetle, Xyleborinus saxesenii Ratzeburg (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).We hypothesised that X. saxesenii may exhibit higher fitness in specific hosts that are particularly abundant in their respective regions. To test this hypothesis, we bred X. saxesenii from a broadleaved forest population in semi‐artificial media mimicking either a coniferous or a broadleaved host‐tree species. As trade‐offs between different traits can occur, we examined various aspects of the life history, social behaviour and fungal symbionts of X. saxesenii.We found that dispersing females did not exhibit any preference, and that the host tree did not have any impact on life history parameters or larval and adult behaviours. The fungal community associated with the species was made up of identical fungal species, albeit with different relative abundances between host trees. Our findings indicate that X. saxesenii does not exhibit a specific adaptation to the most abundant host trees in its native habitat. However, we identified significant effects of laboratory breeding on life history traits, social behaviour and adult dispersal.This generalism in host use in combination with inbreeding mating system may be the main drivers of the invasion success of the Eurasian X. saxesenii, which is currently among the most prevalent and widely distributed ambrosia beetle species worldwide. The response of soil microbes to heavy metal pollution provides a metric to evaluate the soil health and ecological risks associated with heavy metal contamination. However, a multitrophic level perspective of how soil microbial communities and their functions respond to long-term exposure of multiple heavy metals remains unclear. Herein, we examined variations in soil microbial (including protists and bacteria) diversity, functional guilds and interactions along a pronounced metal pollution gradient in a field surrounding an abandoned electroplating factory. Given the stressful soil environment resulting from extremely high heavy metal concentrations and low nutrients, beta diversity of protist increased, but that of bacteria decreased, at high versus low pollution sites. Additionally, the bacteria community showed low functional diversity and redundancy at the highly polluted sites. We further identified indicative genus and "generalists" in response to heavy metal pollution. Predatory protists in Cercozoa were the most sensitive protist taxa with respect to heavy metal pollution, whereas photosynthetic protists showed a tolerance for metal pollution and nutrient deficiency. The complexity of ecological networks increased, but the communication among the modules disappeared with increasing metal pollution levels. Subnetworks of tolerant bacteria displaying functional versatility (Blastococcus, Agromyces and Opitutus) and photosynthetic protists (microalgae) became more complex with increasing metal pollution levels, indicating their potential for use in bioremediation and restoration of abandoned industrial sites contaminated by heavy metals.

Therefore, a literature search was conducted to examine how generalists are defined and classified in research worldwide.Methods: We conducted a literature search that focused exclusively on articles written in English and used keywords related to generalists, general medicine (GM), primary care, and family medicine. Based on the results, six physicians working in GM reviewed the findings and discussed the identified issues and their potential solutions.Results: The definition of generalists in studies targeting GM, family medicine, and primary care conducted worldwide, including Japan, varies. Generalists exhibit diverse roles even within university hospitals in Japan. No studies provide a precise categorization or definition of generalists based on specific medical practices or roles, except for hospitalists, who are primarily involved in inpatient management in the United States.Conclusion: The definition of GM was unclear based on the results of the literature search, and the lack of uniformity in backgrounds has rendered the target population unclear. Consequently, in healthcare settings where medical systems vary by country or region, evidence from studies targeting generalists cannot readily apply to actual practice. Clarifying generalists through an explicit definition based on clinical practice will allow for a more precise target population for research on generalists and enable the accumulation of evidence related to well-defined groups of generalists, contributing to the advancement of GM. Humans have substantially transformed the global land surface, resulting in the decline in variation in biotic communities across scales, a phenomenon known as "biological homogenization." However, different biota are affected by biological homogenization to varying degrees, but this variation and the underlying mechanisms remain little studied, particularly in soil systems. To address this topic, we used metabarcoding to investigate the biogeography of soil protists and their prey/hosts (prokaryotes, fungi, and meso‐ and macrofauna) in three human land‐use ecosystem types (farmlands, residential areas, and parks) and natural forest ecosystems across subtropical and temperate regions in China. Our results showed that the degree of community homogenization largely differed between taxa and functional groups of soil protists, and was strongly and positively linked to their colonization ability of human land‐use systems. Removal analysis showed that the introduction of widespread, generalist taxa (OTUs, operational taxonomic units) rather than the loss of narrow‐ranged, specialist OTUs was the major cause of biological homogenization. This increase in generalist OTUs seemingly alleviated the negative impact of land use on specialist taxa, but carried the risk of losing functional diversity. Finally, homogenization of prey/host biota and environmental conditions were also important drivers of biological homogenization in human land‐use systems, with their importance being more pronounced in phagotrophic than parasitic and phototrophic protists. Overall, our study showed that the variation in biological homogenization strongly depends on the colonization ability of taxa in human land‐use systems, but is also affected by the homogenization of resources and environmental conditions. Importantly, biological homogenization is not the major cause of the decline in the diversity of soil protists, and conservation and study efforts should target at taxa highly sensitive to local extinction, such as parasites. The alpine grasshoppers Sigaus nivalis, Sigaus australis and Sigaus nitidus are sympatric in the central mountains of South Island, Aotearoa New Zealand. These grasshoppers feed on a range of alpine plants but show preference towards dicots over monocots. Because herbivorous insects often use smell and taste to locate and recognize food plants it was expected that these grasshoppers would show sensitivity to their favorite foods and potential sensitivity to nonhost plants. Here, we determined feeding preference in captivity allowing each of these three sympatric grasshoppers the same choice of six native alpine plant species. We analyzed the chemical compositions of the plants used in these experiments using gas-chromatograph coupled with mass-spectrometry (GC-MS) and then recorded olfactory responses in the grasshoppers to plant-derived smells (with synthetic compounds) using electroantennogram (EAG). The grasshoppers were able to distinguish between the potential food plants and ate the shrub Coriaria sarmentosa but not the grass Chionochloa pallens, however, the chemicals we detected in the six plant species were very similar. High sensitivity to fatty acid derived aldehydes (decanal, (E,Z)-2,6-nonadienal, hexanal) and a 6-carbon alcohol ((Z)-2-hexen-1-ol) compared to terpenoids (α-phellandrene, β-myrcene, β-ocimene, eucalyptol, (S)-(-)-limonene, (1S)-(-)-α-pinene) or an aromatic compound (2-phenylethanol) was recorded in the antennae of all three grasshopper species and no species- or sex-specific sensitivity to particular compounds was observed. As aldehydes and alcohols are emitted upon plant damage, it is possible that these generalist grasshoppers are sensitive to the smells of damaged plants rather than species-specific plant smells. Case reports contribute to academic development and new clinical research. However, among cases presented at an annual academic conference for Japanese generalists, only a few cases were later published in peer-reviewed journals, highlighting potential barriers regarding the writing of case reports, such as mentorship absence. This paper aimed to offer guidance and strategies to novice and young general physicians in overcoming barriers and effectively composing case reports for international peer-reviewed journals.Methods: This paper focuses on case reports for general physicians with extensive experience in writing case reports for international peer-reviewed journals. We conducted a narrative review to help beginners and young general physicians in writing case reports and discussed strategies for overcoming these barriers.Results: We propose the following three tips as important processes for writing case reports: recognize the types of suitable cases for case reports; select a journal for submission using a list of candidate journals for general physicians; and organize the discussion section with one theme per paragraph. In addition, we provide a list of journals that specifically focus on case reports, along with important pointers for beginners and young general physicians that will assist authors in the field of general medicine in choosing appropriate journals for submission.Conclusion: We hope that understanding and applying these tips will aid beginners and young general physicians in writing case reports.Keywords: candidate journal, discussion point, generalist, mentor, lessons-learned cases, novelty cases, paragraph, writing process

Introduction: Despite moves across medical education to increase learning of generalist principles, a lack of clarity about what generalism means and how we should train doctors as 'generalists', has remained. This study explores how international, undergraduate and postgraduate, policy and educational mission documents characterise the practice and learning of generalism and how this can inform physician training. Methods: A narrative literature review was conducted based on policy and mission documents identified through grey literature searches and a wider systematic review looking at empirical texts. Texts published between 1999 and present and related to 'generalism' were eligible for inclusion. Texts were coded and codes were reviewed and grouped into key themes. Results: Thirty-four documents were included. Definitions vary: some described generalism as a basic skill, whilst others emphasised expertise. Factors which support learning generalism include: favourable financial outcomes; ageing populations; coordination of multidisciplinary care; demand for doctors with transferable skills; and patient expectations. Barriers to learning about generalism include: preference for specialisation; structure of undergraduate teaching and assessment; and the hidden curriculum. Solutions may include re-imagining generalists and specialists as being on a continuum as well as increasing exposure throughout medical education. Discussion: Whilst generalism is consistently positioned as valuable, less clarity exists about how best to operationalise this in medical education. Fundamental ideological and structural changes within teaching curricula and assessment, are necessary to improve generalist learning and to promote sustainable practice. The links between foraging success, foraging effort and diet in a myctophid specialist seabird, the King Penguin Aptenodytes patagonicus, were investigated during seven breeding seasons using tracking and isotopic data. Despite the variable foraging conditions encountered by the birds, isotopic signatures (a proxy for diet) were invariable throughout the study. On the other hand, penguins stayed longer at sea when the foraging success indices (i.e. prey capture attempts per day and mass gained per day) were low. Although King Penguins can compensate for low prey capture rates by increasing foraging effort, their specialist diet during reproduction makes the species particularly sensitive to prey availability, with its conservation tightly linked to its main prey. Painted lady butterflies (Vanessa cardui L. Nymphalidae) are generalist herbivores and serve as a model system across several fields of biology. While it has been demonstrated that V. cardui caterpillars can develop on different host plants, much of this work has been done on commercially sourced caterpillars, which could limit our understanding of wild V. cardui populations. In this study, we sought to explore possible differences in how commercial and wild V. cardui caterpillars may respond to feeding on different host plants, and subsequently, how their diet impacts immune response and survival. Here, we analyzed performance, survival, and immune response of wild and commercially sourced V. cardui caterpillars over several generations on diets that consisted of either 1 of 4 different host plant species or a mixed diet including all 4 species. Qualitatively, we observed that wild larvae had a better larval performance and hemocyte counts compared to the commercial larvae. The results demonstrate that both wild and commercially sourced caterpillars grew and survived best on the same diet treatments (mallow, narrowleaf plantain, and a mixed diet) during development across generations. Immune responses showed similar patterns across host plants between wild and commercial populations, with individuals showing lowered immune responses on dandelion and lupine and higher ones on mallow, plantain and the mixed diet; although the relative rankings on those 3 diets varied. This cosmopolitan species is commercially available in all life stages and can be reared on an artificial diet. As a result, V. cardui commonly serves as a model organism for education and outreach. However, gaps in our knowledge remain with regard to V. cardui ecology and larval host plant suitability for supporting complete development of larvae to reproductive adulthood. In a laboratory setting, we tested host plant suitability of five reported host plants commonly found in California sage scrub ecosystems by assessing survival of V. cardui caterpillars in its entirety. We also assessed how commercially sourced larvae survived on artificial diet: both raising the caterpillars exclusively on artificial diet as well as switching diets from artificial to thistle (a commonly reported host plant) and switching from thistle to artificial diet. We found that all commercially sourced caterpillars exhibited both high larval mortality and low pupation rates when reared on host plants, although larvae reared on Malacothamnus fasciculatus and Sphaeralcea ambigua survived longest. Moreover, M. fasciculatus and S. ambigua were the only host plants tested that supported successful pupation. This contrasted with 63% higher survival of wild‐collected larvae. Our findings suggest that commercially obtained V. cardui may struggle to utilize wild host plants and that future investigations into host plant suitability in wild populations are needed. Additionally, future research using commercial larvae should consider the implications for interpreting host plant suitability as larvae may exhibit adaptations to artificial diet or the loss of adaptation to consuming plant material. The researcher believes that educational institutions should focus on creating an environment in which the child’s inner potential will be revealed, nurturing his individuality, taking into account dreams and needs. A person and his talents are the main asset of the people. The scientist draws attention to the fact that the result of education is not the amount of acquired knowledge, but the ability and ability of a person to use the knowledge resource in solving practical tasks and life situations. The ability to make independent decisions, effectively solve practical situations and calculate the consequences of one’s actions, etc., is much more important than “filling the head” with ready-made information. Quality education becomes a global value and a categorical condition for competitive strategic development of society. At the same time, the creation and construction of quality education will contribute to the development of Ukrainian society, will allow education to be at the forefront of new social changes.

Introduction: Generalism in the health workforce has been established as an important strategy to address health workforce maldistribution. Thus, to best serve the medical needs of northern Australia, the James Cook University (JCU) College of Medicine and Dentistry has a mission to produce graduates who both practise in the region and have a generalist orientation. This study investigated the postgraduate qualifications and key factors that shaped the current career choice of JCU medical graduates, and whether JCU graduates are more likely to choose generalist careers than other Australian medical practitioners of a similar level of experience. Methods: JCU medical graduate data were obtained via cross-sectional survey of 298 early career JCU medical graduates from postgraduate year (PGY) 4 to PGY 10 (the first seven cohorts) who had consented to be contacted for further studies and were still contactable (n=180, response rate=60%). Australian medical graduate data were obtained via the National Health Workforce Dataset released by the Department of Health. Results: Compared to a group of Australian medical graduates with similar years of experience, JCU medical graduates are significantly more likely to choose careers as ‘generalists’ (general practitioners/rural generalists (p=0.044)) or ‘generalist specialists’ in general surgery (p=0.008), general paediatrics (p=0.008), obstetrics and gynaecology (p=0.038) and emergency medicine (borderline significance p=0.058). However, they are less likely to be ‘specialist specialists’ such as pathologists/radiologists (p=0.003) or a physician subspecialty (p=0.004). Key factors identified as influencing current career choice included ‘interest developed or strengthened during undergraduate training’, ‘interest developed from early postgraduate career experiences’, ‘specialty has a good work–life balance’, ‘specialty involves continuity of care with patients’, ‘interest in rural practice’, ‘enjoy a wide scope of practice/being a generalist’ and ‘mentors’. Conclusions: The JCU medical school produces significantly more graduates with a generalist rather than specialist career focus compared to a similarly experienced group of Australian medical practitioners. Contributing factors may include the JCU selection process, and the curricular focus on providing students with a wide range of generalist experiences and exposure to rural, remote, Indigenous and tropical health. Developing approaches that facilitate local vocational training and subsequent specialist practice is also an important part of the regional, rural and remote training pathway. Lastly, the findings suggest JCU medical graduates choose a career that is not only compatible with regional, rural or remote practice, but also involves continuity of care with patients, a wide scope of practice and a good work–life balance, and that this choice has been influenced by a combination of undergraduate and early career experiences. These findings are in line with international evidence and have implications for other jurisdictions planning an educational and workforce strategy to meet the needs of their own regional, rural and remote locations.

When plants are sequentially attacked by multiple herbivores, herbivore identity and host specialization can greatly influence the patterns of herbivore–herbivore and plant–herbivore interactions. However, how prior herbivory and the resulting induced plant responses potentially affect subsequent herbivores deserves further investigation. In this study, we conducted a common‐garden experiment that manipulated sequential herbivory by the specialist caterpillar Gadirtha fusca Pogue (Lepidoptera: Nolidae) and the generalist caterpillar Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) on Chinese tallow, Triadica sebifera (L.) Small (Euphorbiaceae). We tested how prior exposure to herbivores with different levels of host specialization affected the performance of subsequently arriving con‐ and heterospecifics, as well as plant growth and defense responses under subsequent herbivory. We found that prior exposure to the specialist G. fusca facilitated the performance of subsequent conspecifics, resulting in a significant decrease in the growth (height and stem diameter at ground level) of tallow plants. However, prior exposure to the generalist S. litura did not affect the feeding of subsequent con‐ or heterospecifics or the growth of tallow plants. Sequential herbivory by specialist and generalist conspecifics resulted in lower levels of tannins and flavonoids, respectively, in leaves of tallow plants, whereas sequential herbivory by the two species did not affect the levels of tannins or flavonoids, compared to a single damage event. We conclude that herbivore species‐specific plant responses appear to be more important than herbivore identity or specialization in determining herbivore–herbivore interactions and plant responses to sequential herbivore attack. Questions: Forests are highly fragmented across the globe. For urban forests in particular, fragmentation increases the exposure to local warming caused by the urban heat island (UHI) effect. We here aim to quantify edge effects on herbaceous understorey vegetation in urban forests, and test whether these effects interact with forest structural complexity. Location: We set up a pan‐European study at the continental scale including six urban forests in Zurich, Paris, Katowice, Brussels, Bremen, and Stockholm. Methods: We recorded understorey plant communities from the edge towards the interior of urban forests. Within each urban forest, we studied edge‐to‐interior gradients in paired stands with differing forest structural complexity. Community composition was analysed based on species specialism, life form, light, nutrient, acidity and disturbance indicator values and species' thermal niches. Results: We found that herbaceous communities at urban forest edges supported more generalists and forbs but fewer ferns than in forests' interiors. A buffered summer microclimate proved crucial for the presence of fern species. The edge communities contained more thermophilous, disturbance‐tolerant, nutrient‐demanding and basiphilous plant species, a pattern strongly confirmed by corresponding edge‐to‐interior gradients in microclimate, soil and light conditions in the understorey. Additionally, plots with a lower canopy cover and higher light availability supported higher numbers of both generalists and forest specialists. Even though no significant interactions were found between the edge distance and forest structural complexity, opposing additive effects indicated that a dense canopy can be used to buffer negative edge effects. Conclusion: The urban environment poses a multifaceted filter on understorey plant communities which contributes to significant differences in community composition between urban forest edges and interiors. Why many herbivorous insects are host plant specialists, with non‐negligible exceptions, is a conundrum of evolutionary biology, especially because the host plants are not necessarily optimal larval diets. Here, I present a novel model of host plant preference evolution of two insect species. Because habitat preference evolution is contingent upon demographic dynamics, I integrate the evolutionary framework with the modern coexistence theory. The results show that the two insect species can evolve into a habitat specialist and generalist, when they experience both negative and positive frequency‐dependent community dynamics. This happens because the joint action of positive and negative frequency dependence creates multiple (up to nine) eco‐evolutionary equilibria. Furthermore, initial condition dependence due to positive frequency dependence allows specialization to poor habitats. Thus, evolved habitat preferences do not necessarily correlate with the performances. The model provides explanations for counterintuitive empirical patterns and mechanistic interpretations for phenomenological models of niche breadth evolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dominance of neotropical tree communities by a few species is widely documented, but dominant trees show a variety of distributional patterns still poorly understood. Here, we used 503 forest inventory plots (93,719 individuals ≥2.5 cm diameter, 2609 species) to explore the relationships between local abundance, regional frequency and spatial aggregation of dominant species in four main habitat types in western Amazonia. Although the abundance‐occupancy relationship is positive for the full dataset, we found that among dominant Amazonian tree species, there is a strong negative relationship between local abundance and regional frequency and/or spatial aggregation across habitat types. Our findings suggest an ecological trade‐off whereby dominant species can be locally abundant (local dominants) or regionally widespread (widespread dominants), but rarely both (oligarchs). Given the importance of dominant species as drivers of diversity and ecosystem functioning, unravelling different dominance patterns is a research priority to direct conservation efforts in Amazonian forests. Stormwater ponds are constructed to receive urban runoff and regulate flooding of built areas. As a result, they can be more stressful habitats for aquatic organisms than natural ponds. Adult dragonflies are known to frequent stormwater management ponds in cities, but whether they successfully reproduce in these artificial systems is not clear. This study compared the reproductive potential of dragonflies in stormwater ponds across a temperate metropolitan area through weekly collections of exuviae at stormwater ponds and natural (reference) ponds. We hypothesized that stormwater ponds were poor habitats for dragonfly reproduction (in comparison to natural ponds) because of the typically negative effects of urbanization on wildlife. With respect to dragonfly reproduction, we therefore predicted: (1) lower breeding recruitment, (2) fewer habitat specialists, and (3) greater homogenization of breeding assemblages at stormwater ponds. However, we did not find a significant difference in the number of species and abundance of exuviae between stormwater and natural ponds. Stormwater ponds also supported similar numbers of habitat specialists as natural ponds. Furthermore, we did not find evidence of greater biotic homogenization across stormwater ponds as species composition was similar between both pond types. Context. Habitat loss and fragmentation are leading causes of biodiversity decline worldwide. In Australia, woodland habitat has been extensively cleared and fragmented yet there has been limited research on the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation on semi-arid reptiles, impeding conservation planning and recovery efforts. Aims. We aimed to investigate factors influencing the distribution and occurrence of habitat specialist and generalist reptile species on a large agricultural holding in south-eastern Australia that has experienced habitat loss and fragmentation. Methods. Reptiles were surveyed using pitfall and funnel traps and active searches across 20 sites stratified by land use and vegetation type. Twelve sites were established in remnant woodland patches embedded within an agricultural matrix and eight sites were established in a private conservation reserve on the same property. Generalised linear models were used to explore relationships between the occurrence of eight reptile species and predictor variables describing site, landscape and vegetation variables. Key results. Of the 31 reptile species that were detected, eight were modelled. The results revealed that four specialist species, the eastern mallee dragon (Ctenophorus spinodomus), nobbi dragon (Diporiphora nobbi), barred wedge-snouted ctenotus (Ctenotus schomburgkii) and shrubland pale-flecked morethia (Morethia obscura), were closely associated with the conservation reserve, and that the southern spinifex ctenotus (Ctenotus atlas) had a strong association with spinifex (Triodia scariosa) dominated vegetation community. Conclusions. Reptile habitat specialists are particularly sensitive to habitat loss and fragmentation and are at a higher risk of local extinction compared with habitat generalists. Reptile occurrence wasreduced in remnant woodland patches, but remnant patches also supported a suite of habitat generalists. Implications. A suite of semi-arid reptile species are sensitive to the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation and are susceptible to localised extinction. However, the presence of habitat generalists within woodland remnants highlights the value of retaining representative habitat patches in agricultural landscapes. Conservation of semi-arid woodland reptiles will depend on the retention of large tracts of protected vegetation across a broad range of soil types to maintain habitat heterogeneity and reptile diversity. Ocean warming has been driving mortality events across the world's coral reef ecosystems and is resulting in multifaceted ecosystem restructuring. With the rapid shifts occurring across ecosystems, questions arise of which species, in which locations, have the capacity to persevere under climate change. Environmental generalism refers to species with the biological traits that support environmental flexibility, enabling the organism to occupy a broad range of environmental conditions. Some Scleractinia have been categorised as environmental generalists and proposed as likely winners under changing climate conditions, as environmental generalists have been considered less susceptible to environmental disturbance than specialist species. Given the complexity of the holobiont structure of corals, which includes photoendosymbiosis and diverse microbial consortia, understanding the complexity of the coral holobiont-environment interaction for the generalist corals will be an important factor in accurately predicting the success of these species into the future. Here we conduct a literature search to compile topics and concepts of environmental generalism for Australia's warming coral reef ecosystems and the breadth of holobiont responses to ecosystem restructuring. We synthesise these findings in the context of the latitudinal expanse of Australia's coral reefs to highlight how it is necessary to understand the biological underpinnings of generalist corals. Population aging is a global phenomenon observed in many developed economies. On the one hand, this trend suggests significant opportunities for healthcare providers due to increasing service demand. On the other hand, it also implies that the industry requires new managerial knowledge to accommodate older adult consumers. In this research, we propose and examine the impact of older adult consumers on healthcare provider performance and identify boundary conditions related to two types of competition: intra‐ and inter‐competition. Using longitudinal data on healthcare provider revenues, we find that an increase in the older adult population increases the revenues of generalists but decreases those of specialists. Second, the positive effect of elderly consumers on generalists is amplified when intra‐competition (from same‐type physicians) increases and diminishes when inter‐competition (from different‐type physicians) intensifies. Third, for specialist healthcare providers, the negative impact of older adult population is mitigated by intra‐competition but exacerbated when inter‐competition becomes strong. Our results offer theoretical implications for the healthcare service marketing literature and managerial insights into decisions related to healthcare service locations. Specifically, our findings suggest that healthcare providers need to carefully consider the proportion of older adult consumers, the presence of local competitors, and their own specialties, as these factors all have a meaningful impact on performance. Habitat heterogeneity leads to genome-wide differentiation and morphological and ecological differentiation, which will progress along the speciation continuum, eventually leading to speciation. Phragmites hirsuta and Phragmites australis are sympatric congeners that coexist in saline-alkaline meadow soil (SAS) and sandy soil (SS) habitats of the Songnen Meadow. The results provided genetic evidence for two separate species of reeds. Genetic diversity and spatial genetic structure supported the specialist-generalist variation hypothesis (SGVH) in these two sympatric reed species, suggesting that P. australis is a generalist and P. hirsuta is a habitat specialist. When we compared these different species with respect to phenotypic and genetic variation patterns in different habitats, we found that the phenotypic differentiation of P. australis between the two habitats was higher than that of P. hirsuta. Multiple subtle differences in morphology, genetic background, and habitat use collectively contribute to ecological success for similar congeners. Multi-trophic and multispecies interactions among family of arthropods assemblages are ubiquitous and include all type of interactions from mutualistic to antagonistic. To better inform the biological control of aphids, the multitrophic interactions between aphids, coccinellids and their parasitoids in natural and managed plant systems were examined over a span of 4 years. Coccinellid larvae naturally found feeding on aphids on two non-crop plants growing in agricultural landscapes in Pakistan were studied; Aphis nerii Boyer de Fonscolombe (Hemiptera: Aphididae) feeding on Calotropis procera Aiton, and Nerium oleander L, and four crop host; Lipaphis erysimi Kalt (Hemiptera: Aphididae) feeding on Eurica sativa Mill. and Brassica campestris L., Uroleucon compositae Theobold (Hemiptera: Aphididae) feeding on Carthamus tinctorius L., and Diuraphis noxia Mordvilko (Hemiptera: Aphididae) feeding on Hordeum vulgare L.; were collected throughout the aphid season and reared on their respective aphid-plant combinations in the laboratory conditions to identify coccinellid species, their parasitoids and asses their performance in items of survival and pupal weight. The coccinellid pupal weight on different host plant-aphid combinations varied from 3.4 to 11.2 mg, as did the mortality of coccinellid larvae due to diseases and unknown causes (5 to 31%). Parasitism of coccinellid larvae by Homalotylus flaminus (Dalman) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) ranged from approximately 10 to 30 in B. campestris and E. sativa, respectively. The parasitism of coccinellid pupae by Oomyzus scaposus (Thomson) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) ranged between 17 (C. procera) to 41% (B. compestris). One Dinocampus coccinellae Schrank (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was reared. Coccinellids displayed selectivity towards host plants and aphids. Some coccinellids were never or rarely recorded on a particular aphid-plant combination, suggesting that their prey selection is more specific than often assumed. Management decision and conservation biological control cannot be based on superficial categories such as "aphids" and "coccinellids" but need to be plant and species specific. Ocean warming has been driving mortality events across the world’s coral reef ecosystems and is resulting in multifaceted ecosystem restructuring. With the rapid shifts occurring across ecosystems, questions arise of which species, in which locations, have the capacity to persevere under climate change. Environmental generalism refers to species with the biological traits that support environmental flexibility, enabling the organism to occupy a broad range of environmental conditions. Some Scleractinia have been categorised as environmental generalists and proposed as likely winners under changing climate conditions, as environmental generalists have been considered less susceptible to environmental disturbance than specialist species. Given the complexity of the holobiont structure of corals, which includes photoendosymbiosis and diverse microbial consortia, understanding the complexity of the coral holobiont–environment interaction for the generalist corals will be an important factor in accurately predicting the success of these species into the future. Here we conduct a literature search to compile topics and concepts of environmental generalism for Australia’s warming coral reef ecosystems and the breadth of holobiont responses to ecosystem restructuring. We synthesise these findings in the context of the latitudinal expanse of Australia’s coral reefs to highlight how it is necessary to understand the biological underpinnings of generalist corals.

Species interactions exhibit varying degrees of specialization, ranging from generalist to specialist interactions. For many interactions (e.g., plantmicrobiome) we lack standardized metrics of specialization, hindering our ability to apply comparative frameworks of specificity across niche axes and organismal groups. Here, we discuss the concept of plant host specificity of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi and ectomycorrhizal (EM) fungi, including the predominant theories for their interactions: Passenger, Driver, and Habitat Hypotheses. We focus on five major areas of interest in advancing the field of plant-mycorrhizal fungal host specificity: phylogenetic specificity, host physiology specificity, functional specificity, habitat specificity, and mycorrhizal fungal-mediated plant rarity. Considering the need to elucidate foundational concepts of specificity in this globally important symbiosis, we propose standardized metrics and comparative studies to enhance our understanding. We also emphasize the importance of analyzing global mycorrhizal data holistically to draw meaningful conclusions and suggest a shift toward singlespecies analyses to unravel the complexities underlying these associations. Simple Summary: The hedgehog grain aphid (HGA) is a pest that affects cereal crops worldwide and was first observed in the United States in 2007. To understand how this aphid spreads and becomes damaging, it is essential to study how temperature and the host plant affect its development and reproduction. In this study, we found that temperatures between 20 °C and 25 °C are best for HGA survival and reproduction, while temperatures below 10 °C and above 35 °C do not allow for survival. This study revealed that HGA can survive on wheat, millet, and three cultivars of sorghum, including those resistant to the sorghum aphid. Together, these results help us predict HGA populations by identifying host plants in cereal crops and documenting how temperature affects these populations. The hedgehog grain aphid (HGA), Sipha maydis Passerini (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is a cereal pest in many regions of the world. It was first documented in the United States in 2007, and it has a range that appears to be expanding. Understanding the effects of temperature and the host plant on HGA development, survival, and reproduction is crucial for understanding its population dynamics, potential distribution, and management strategies. In this study, we investigated the effects of different temperatures and host plants on the demographic parameters of HGA and determined the supercooling point (SCP) for their first instars, apterous adults, and winged adults. Our findings revealed that temperatures between 20 °C and 25 °C were optimal for HGA development and reproduction, with parthenogenetic females producing approximately 60 offspring in their lifetimes. However, HGA development was hindered below 10 °C and above 35 °C. The SCP for HGA was similar (mean ± S.E.: −16.280 ± 0.532 °C) among nymphs, apterous adults, and winged adults. We compared the HGA demographics with the demographics of the sorghum aphid (SA), Melanaphis sorghi (Theobald, 1904), on wheat, millet, and three cultivars of sorghum under a constant temperature. The HGA completed its life cycle on all the tested host plants with a similar reproduction, demonstrating a lack of resistance to HGA by a sorghum that is resistant to SA. By expanding our knowledge of host plant- and temperature-dependent development, reproduction, and mortality in S. maydis, we can better predict and manage future HGA populations in small grain crops. Background: Plastic-degrading microbial isolates offer great potential to degrade, transform, and upcycle plastic waste. Tandem chemical and biological processing of plastic wastes has been shown to substantially increase the rates of plastic degradation; however, the focus of this work has been almost entirely on microbial isolates (either bioengineered or naturally occurring). We propose that a microbial community has even greater potential for plastic upcycling. A microbial community has greater metabolic diversity to process mixed plastic waste streams and has built-in functional redundancy for optimal resilience. Results: Here, we used two plastic-derivative degrading communities as a model system to investigate the roles of specialist and generalist species within the microbial communities. These communities were grown on five plastic-derived substrates: pyrolysis treated high-density polyethylene, chemically deconstructed polyethylene terephthalate, disodium terephthalate, terephthalamide, and ethylene glycol. Short-read metagenomic and metatranscriptomic sequencing were performed to evaluate activity of microorganisms in each treatment. Long-read metagenomic sequencing was performed to obtain high-quality metagenome assembled genomes and evaluate division of labor. Conclusions: Data presented here show that the communities are primarily dominated by Rhodococcus generalists and lower abundance specialists for each of the plastic-derived substrates investigated here, supporting previous research that generalist species dominate batch culture. Additionally, division of labor may be present between Hydrogenophaga terephthalate degrading specialists and lower abundance protocatechuate degrading specialists. Anthropogenic disturbances and seasonal changes significantly impact diversity and community composition of ants, but their effects are often intertwined. We investigated these drivers on Lang Tengah Island, a location with a pronounced monsoon season and three resorts that close during this period. We surveyed four sites, two disturbed and two undisturbed, before and after the monsoon season, using pitfall traps to sample epigaeic ant communities. Undisturbed habitats had higher species diversity, but both habitats (undisturbed and disturbed sites) have a high proportion of ants with characteristics of being encroached by generalist and invasive/tramp ant species. Post-monsoon sampling yielded an increase in species richness and diversity. Seasonal changes, such as monsoonal rains, can temporarily alter ant interactions and resource distribution, potentially maintaining diversity. Mounting evidence suggests that microbes found in the pollen provisions of wild and solitary bees are important drivers of larval development. As these microbes are also known to be transmitted via the environment, most likely from flowers, the diet breadth of a bee may affect the diversity and identity of the microbes that occur in its pollen provisions. Here, we tested the hypothesis that, due to the importance of floral transmission of microbes, diet breadth affects pollen provision microbial community composition. We collected pollen provisions at four sites from the polylectic bee Osmia lignaria and the oligolectic bee Osmia ribifloris. We used high-throughput sequencing of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene to characterize the bacteria found in these provisions. We found minimal overlap in the specific bacterial variants in pollen provisions across the host species, even when the bees were constrained to foraging from the same flowers in cages at one site. Similarly, there was minimal overlap in the specific bacterial variants across sites, even within the same host species. Together, these findings highlight the importance of environmental transmission and host specific sorting influenced by diet breadth for microbes found in pollen provisions. Future studies addressing the functional consequences of this filtering, along with tests for differences between more species of oligoletic and polylectic bees will provide rich insights into the microbial ecology of solitary bees.

While Wolbachia, an intracellular bacterial symbiont, is primarily transmitted maternally in arthropods, horizontal transmission between species has been commonly documented. We examined kleptoparasitism as a potential mechanism for Wolbachia horizontal transmission, using ant crickets and their host ants as the model system. We compared prevalence and diversity of Wolbachia across multiple ant cricket species with different degrees of host specificity/integration level. Our analyses revealed at least three cases of inter-ordinal Wolbachia transfer among ant and ant crickets, and also showed that ant cricket species with high host-integration and host-specificity tend to harbor a higher Wolbachia prevalence and diversity than other types of ant crickets. This study provides empirical evidence that distribution of Wolbachia across ant crickets is largely attributable to horizontal transmission, but also elucidates the role of intimate ecological association in successful Wolbachia horizontal transmission.

Abstract Influentials play a key role in enhancing information diffusion on social media. However, how personal influence varies across multiple domains is rarely addressed. This study introduces a concept called Domain-Relevance of Influence to describe the relation between influence and domains, and establishes a methodological framework with a sample of 8,520,933 Weibo users to explore the cross-domain characteristics of influence. The results show that generalists with cross-domain attributes possess significantly higher influence than specialists in most domains, whereas in a single domain such as sports or technology, specialists and generalists can possess comparable influence. We further show that influence is positively associated with cross-domain capability in overall domains, but not necessarily in each single domain. This study contributes to better understanding of the influence variation across domains for influence enhancement, and provides a big data-based methodological basis for cross-domain communication research.

Polymorphidae is a monophyletic group of acanthocephalans distributed worldwide. Within this family, Hexaglandula corynosoma is a specialist species that uses a single bird species as a definitive host. Southwellina hispida is a generalist species that uses a broad spectrum of definitive hosts to complete its life cycle. In the current research, sequences of cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) from mitochondrial DNA were generated from 44 specimens of H. corynosoma and 76 of S. hispida distributed sympatrically in 6 biogeographic provinces of Mexico with the objective of characterizing and comparing the population genetic structure of 2 acanthocephalan species with opposing life strategies. The phylogeographic studies indicated that the populations of both species lacked a phylogeographic structure and exhibited high haplotype diversity, low nucleotide diversity and low Fst values among the biogeographic provinces; in combination with negative values on the neutrality test, this suggests that the populations of acanthocephalans are expanding. Paratenic hosts are key for the transmission from intermediate to definitive hosts in the generalist species. However, the inclusion of paratenic hosts does not play a principal role in the population genetic structure of S. hispida within its distribution along the coasts of Mexico.

In the Arctic tundra, climate-induced emergence of the red fox (Vulpes vulpes (Linnaeus, 1758)), a competitor to the Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus (Linnaeus, 1758)), is predicted to influence predation patterns of both fox mesopredators.
