T.C. Power was a Montana merchandise, transportation, mining, ranching, banking, and real estate magnate; and U.S. Senator from Montana from 1890 to 1895. Collection (1868-1950) includes personal, business, and political correspondence plus financial and legal papers of many of his business enterprises. Collection documents Power's involvement in military and Indian trade, steamboating, freighting, stage coach lines, mail contracts, cattle and sheep ranching, mining, banking, bridge building, townsite development, and other enterprises., The T.C. Power Papers are arranged into sixteen subgroups: 1) T.C. Power--Political, 2) T.C. Power--Personal, 3) T.C. Power and Brother (includes associated companies), 4) C.B. Power--Personal, 5) Grain Companies, 6) Hardware Companies, 7) Mercantile Companies, 8) Mining Companies, 9) Organizations 10) Ranch Companies, 11) Real Estate, 12) Transportation Companies, 13) Water Companies, 14) Bismarck, North Dakota, enterprises, 15) Washington and Oregon enterprises, and 16) Miscellaneous enterprises., The papers (1881-1902) in the T.C. POWER--POLITICAL SUBGROUP document his unsuccessful bid to be the first State governor in 1889 and, more importantly, his term as a United States senator, 1890-1895. Forming the largest segment of the political papers is the General Correspondence, which reflects issues that affected the livelihood of his constituents: free silver and the wool tariff. Most of this is incoming correspondence with only a few letters of reply from Power. Other questions of interest to Montanans during his term of office were the establishment of better services, such as post offices for rural areas, irrigation, uses of public lands, and requests for political patronage. The subgroup also contains Financial Records, including an election expense account for 1888-1895; Legal Documents, Speeches, including an 1889 campaign speech; Clippings, mainly tariff issues, irrigation, and political scrapbooks; and a Miscellany Series, which includes lists of registered voters; federal documents; a record of bills, etc., pertaining to irrigation introduced in the U.S. Senate during the 52nd Congress, an 1892 list of attorneys in Montana, and petitions for the establishment of post offices., The papers (1871-1923) in the T.C. POWER--PERSONAL SUBGROUP reflect his involvement in the firm of T.C. Power and Brother, and his financial investments in other areas. Because Power played such an important role in the administration of T.C. Power and Brother, his General Correspondence details some of the activity of the holding company, particularly after 1900. The Financial Records, which detail his personal investments in mining and real estate--including areas outside of Montana, make up another significant portion of his personal papers. There are also some records for his household expenses. Other series include Legal Documents, consisting mostly of agreements and bills of sale; Organization records, including stock certificates and minutes of meetings; miscellaneous Clippings; assay and company Reports; and a Miscellany Series including such things as a 1920 list of sheep owners in Montana and a 1916 list of materials suitable for paving streets in Fort Benton., The largest volume of records are those in the T.C. POWER AND BROTHER SUBGROUP. T.C. Power and Brother was a holding company whose operations first centered at Fort Benton. Originally the activity of the company focused on steamboating on the Missouri River, supplying merchandise to branch stores, Indian agencies and military posts, cattle ranches, and area residents. The company later expanded to include mining, stage coach lines, and real estate. Records for the holding company are nearly complete for the period 1880-1900. Some records, such as outgoing correspondence and financial material, date to the late 1860s. Between 1900 and 1920 there is almost no correspondence in the company's records. Consequently, the personal papers of T.C. Power and of C.B. Power, and those companies in which T.C. Power and Brother had an interest, must be used to fill this gap., Charles Benton Power's personal records (1895-1941), in the C.B. POWER--PERSONAL SUBGROUP, document his active participation in various aspects of T.C. Power and Brother, as well as his extensive interests outside of Montana. His General Correspondence (1895-1940) documents the economic reversals of the 1920s and 1930s, particularly as they affected the companies of T.C. Power and Brother. Other series include Financial Records (1895-1940); Legal Documents (1894-1938); and Organization records (1922-1932), including stock certificates and minutes of the Montana Automobile Association., The GRAIN, HARDWARE, MERCANTILE, MINING, RANCH, REAL ESTATE, TRANSPORTATION, and WATER SUBGROUPS reflect the Powers' wide-ranging economic interests. In many ways the records represent a cross-section of Montana's economic life during the late 1800s and the early 1900s. During the 1800s most of the records of these companies were retained with the T.C. Power and Brother records. After 1900, however, they were filed separately by each company. The difficulty then in dealing with this collection is that the whole Power corporation was not entirely consistent in either of these practices. Consequently a researcher interested in one of these subgoup companies also has to look in the T.C. Power and Brother records, and in the personal papers of T.C. Power and C.B. Power. In addition to their Montana businesses, T.C. and C.B. Power were also involved in real estate, irrigation, mercantile, banking, and lumbering operations in Oregon and Washington., The records in the WASHINGTON AND OREGON SUBGROUP have been kept separate from the Montana businesses, but additional material can be found in the T.C. Power and Brother, T.C. Power--Personal, and C.B. Power--Personal subgroups. (Manuscript Collection 55).

Letters, receipts, and photographs of the Tucker family of Monongalia County. Two ledgers of a storekeeper, W.A. Tucker, contain entries of individual customers and business firms with corresponding types of payment, (cash, exchange, etc.). There is also a brief history of the early Tucker family in America and of George Tucker, A Revolutionary War veteran, who was the first to settle the family in West Virginia.

Two customer credit ledgers of the Harvey & DeQuaise Grocery of Deepwater, Fayette Co. Harvey and DeQuaise were related by marriage, and both were originally from Fayetteville. They built a permanent structure for their store in 1892 at the C&O rail head of Deepwater, twenty miles from Fayetteville, in what was then a productive coal mining field. The entries reflect that the establishment was also a general store carrying items such as nails, seed, and clothing as well as food items.

Gissy in Camden, West Virginia, in the early twentieth century. Chiefly consists of invoices and receipts for dry goods and food, such as grains and feed, household goods, clothing, and food, from various wholesalers and dry goods companies from 1918 to 1947 with the majority from 1930 to 1947. Also includes advertising material from several grocery merchants, price lists, and blank order forms. The last two boxes contain J. L. Gissy's account books and ledgers from 1917 to 1944.

Stiles, Reminiscences of Monongalia County, 1910-1916. The boyhood memoirs of an elderly Monongalia County resident, entitled, "Our Daily Bread" relating rural life in the early years of the twentieth century. There is mention of home remedies, farming, country stores, school, church, holidays, transportation and folkways. He describes in detail seeing the first automobile in the western part of the county. Also contains some genealogical notes on William White and family, White is the surveyor who named that portion of the county, Battelle District.

Includes correspondence and administrative, legal and business records relating to various economic enterprises of the society, such as a brewery, tannery, and hotel; material relating to the Zoar Post Office, Zoar Foundation, and other Zoar agencies and persons after the society's dissolution. Also includes music, books and correspondence of Society members, including those written by those serving in the Civil War, providing insight into the lives of these individuals. Lillian Ruof Bimeler Sturm's extensive collection of letters, postcards, product advertisements, rewards of merit, craft instruction books and school writings are particularly descriptive of a female's life during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Included in the collection are papers of the Society's successive leaders: Joseph M. Bimeler, Jacob Sylvan, Jacob Ackerman, Simon Beuter, and Lewis Zimmerman.

Frye Papers, 1875-1903. Letters, receipts, and business papers of a resident of Keyser who was an agent for Hartford Fire Insurance Company and the Phoenix Insurance Company of Hartford. Frye was later a traveling agent for Green and Laing, Hardware and Cutlery, Wheeling, and others, and a dealer in general merchandise.

Account ledger of a general merchandise store in the eastern panhandle of Virginia, (later West Virginia) documenting transactions of goods purchased, services rendered as payment on accounts and balances owed. The money amounts are recorded in English currency denominations. The store was probably owned and operated by the William Brown family. Several local family names listed as patrons include Morgan, Shepherd, Hoyt, Osborne, Jones, and Richardson. There are also two loose papers; one documents a 1794 account for Alexander Brown, the other, undated, has several dollar amounts and calculations written in pencil with the Maryland towns of Frederick, Boonsboro, and Cumberland listed at the top.

Partnership of George H. and Stephen F. Dana of Kanawha County, West Virginia, engaged in coal mining and general merchandise. The collection includes production records, inventory, shipping book, payroll sheets, a daybook, and a letter book. S.F. Dana was also one of the organizers of the Campbell's Creek Coal Co. There is also a letter book of George H. Dana created while he served as agent, 1871-1875, in England for Jos. Hall Manufacturing Company, holder of the English patent on James Leffel's turbine waterwheel.

Papers of Dr. Margaret Byrnside Ballard (1900-1991), regarding the history of Monroe County, West Virginia, and the Ballard family. As a genealogist and author of local history, she was an avid collector of the historical materials contained in this collection, most of which relate to her family and Monroe County. Account book created in Greenbrier County, near Lewisburg on the turnpike, during 1839-1840. It documents transactions for general merchandise, and for services provided inn and tavern customers. Some of the names appearing include William Colwell & Co., William Dixon, Isaac Hapinstall, Jack Hapinstall, James Hapinstall, E. Meeks, Doct. Moorman, Joseph Perry, Daniel Reynolds, Mrs. Thwacker, and Rich. Sammons. Many of the persons recorded in the book lived near Edward M. Brown who was a merchant, so the book probably belonged to him.

William Sommerville (1756-1826) Papers, 1799-1888. Correspondence and genealogical materials related to the William B. Edwards family of King George County, Virginia, and the Capt. William Sommerville family of Martinsburg, Virginia (now West Virginia) from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. These families were joined when Elizabeth Sommerville (1812-1886), daughter of the Revolutionary War veteran, married William B. Edwards (1810-1888), a Methodist clergyman from a planter family, in 1833. Collection includes: correspondence between William and Elizabeth Edwards from 1832 to 1888 (chiefly from the 1830s and 1840s about their relationship, family, and his work with the Baltimore Conference); genealogical notes and narrative family histories of the Sommerville, Edwards, and the related William Brown, Laurence Balthrop, and John Sommerville families; and miscellaneous materials related to Captain William Sommerville. The latter include: am original calendar of letter abstracts for the correspondence of William Sommerville, 1810-1811; an original copy of the diary of William Sommerville, 1810-1812; a typescript of his 1794 diary; and a family register that contains a handwritten copy of Sommerville's brief account of his Revolutionary War service with the Eighth Pennsylvania Regiment and his life after the war, as well as copied extracts of his diary from 1810 to 1812. Twenty-four ledgers document the operations of the Reed General Store in Boothsville, Taylor County, West Virginia, from 1851 to 1893. These account books contain an inventory of items sold, mainly food products, to identified customers and a record of credit extended to those who were given loans to purchase at the store. The books reflect the organization of the store by Joseph Reed, who along with his uncle, Robert Reed, helped to found and develop this town, in which the family also owned and operated a tannery, mill, and tavern. Also included is a description of the family and a list of descendants.
