Stress exposure often leads to poor mental health, but whether certain types of stressors predict differential levels of mental health symptoms and whether coping differentially moderates these associations remain untested. This study examined whether COVID-19 stressor types (financial-, activity-, and infection-related) differentially predicted subsequent mental health (general distress, posttraumatic stress symptoms, and positive states of mind [PSOM]) and whether different types of coping moderated these relationships. In April 2020, questionnaires assessing the impact of COVID-19 on daily life were administered to an adult sample across the United States (N = 1,546); 861 (55.7%) of whom completed questionnaires 1 month later. Nearly, all stressor types independently predicted each aspect of mental health. Behavioral disengagement moderated links between both activity- and infection-related stressors and mental health. Seeking emotional social support moderated links between infection-related stressors and both general distress and PSOM as well as activity-related stressors and general distress. Positive reappraisal moderated links between financial-related stressors and PSOM. Acceptance coping predicted better mental health but was not a significant moderator. Stressor types and coping strategies are important determinants of effects of COVID-19 on mental health; our findings suggest possible screening and intervention implications and directions for future research. Prior research assessing the psychometric properties of the Global Psychotrauma Screen provided support for its internal consistency reliability, construct validity, convergent validity, and divergent validity in several international samples, but not specifically in a U.S. subsample. The purpose of this study was to assess psychometric properties of the GPS in the U.S. This observational study included a convenience sample of individually recruited participants (N = 231) who completed an initial study with 126-item online questionnaire and a two-week follow-up study with GPS alone through the weblinks provided by the research team. Data analyzes included measuring internal consistency and test–retest reliability, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyzes (EFA and CFA), convergent and divergent validity, sensitivity, specificity, and severity of the GPS symptom items. Additional CFA was conducted with data (N = 947) from the GPS multinational research project, U.S. subsample. The results showed acceptable internal consistency and test–retest reliability, convergent validity, and divergent validity of the GPS. The construct validity results supported a three-factor structure of the GPS symptoms. The GPS domains showed acceptable sensitivity and specificity with the cut-off scores of 3 for PTSD and 5 for CPTSD domains; and the scores of 1 for the anxiety, depression, and insomnia domains respectively. The GPS risk factors predicted the GPS symptom severity. This study provides new and additional evidence on the psychometric properties of the GPS which may help health care providers with the selection of an appropriate screening instrument for trauma-related transdiagnostic symptoms. The study limitations should be addressed in future research through the replication of EFA and CFA internationally with larger samples, and the inclusion of a reference standard for dissociation. Rosacea is a skin disease characterized by facial erythema and inflammatory pustules that may result in emotional distress. Social Phobia and Self-Esteem appear to be linked to the development of higher levels of distress in dermatological conditions, while Trait Emotional Intelligence (Trait EI) has been consistently associated with greater levels of adaptation to one's chronic condition. Hence, it seems extremely relevant to observe the interplay between these dimensions in the context of Rosacea. The goal of the current study is to test the hypothesis that an association between Trait EI and General Distress, in individuals with Rosacea would be mediated by Self-Esteem and Social Phobia. Questionnaires were administered to 224 individuals suffering from Rosacea to assess Trait EI, Social Phobia, Self-Esteem, and General Distress. Results highlighted that Trait EI was positively related to Self-Esteem and negatively related to Social Phobia and General Distress. In addition, both Self-Esteem and Social Phobia showed a mediating role in the relationship between Trait EI and General Distress. The main limitations of this work consist in the cross-sectional nature of the data, the small number of participants, also it was not possible to differentiate the participants according to the type of rosacea. These results emphasize how individuals with Rosacea may be vulnerable to internalizing states and how high levels of Trait EI may constitute a protective factor for the onset of distressing states and it would be useful to create programs aimed at fostering Trait EI in Rosacea sufferers. • Rosacea symptomatology interferes with several dimensions of individual functioning. • Individuals with Rosacea are likely to experience high levels of emotional distress. • Individuals with Rosacea are likely to experience Social Phobia. • Individuals with Rosacea may report low levels of Self-Esteem. Introduction: Depression and anxiety are implicated in suicide risk, but the contributionof specific symptom dimensions within these disorders is not well understood. The present study examined longitudinal associations of transdiagnostic symptoms (General Distress[GD]) and unique symptom dimensions (Anhedonia–Apprehension [AA], Fears, and Narrow Depression [ND]) of depression and anxiety and suicidal ideation (SI). Methods: Data from 551 adolescents oversampled on high neuroticism were examined in a series of discrete‐time survival analyses to predict first SI onset over an 8‐year period. Results: Results indicate that GD, AA, and ND were independent predictors of increased likelihood of SI onset and remained significant when controlling for effects of fears. Furthermore, AA and GD remained significant when controlling for one another. ND effects reduced by 24% when adjusting for AA and 74% when adjusting for GD. Fears did not significantly predict SI onset. Conclusion: Results suggest that broad levels of distress across depression and anxiety, deficits in positive affect, and elevated negative affect specific to depression increase the likelihood of suicidal thoughts. As such, attention to broader distress and a lack of pleasure, interest, and motivation—potentially more so than negative affect characterizing depression—are particularly important for addressing suicide risk in adolescents. Objective: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder among women. It is characterised by a variety of symptoms that can seriously impair one's health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Dysmorphic concerns and general distress appear to be related to the development of HRQoL issues, whilst trait emotional intelligence (trait EI) has been significantly linked to better adaptability to chronic conditions. The present study sought to test the hypothesis that an association between trait EI and HRQoL in individuals with PCOS would be mediated by dysmorphic concerns and to examine their relationship with general distress (depression, anxiety, and stress). Methods: Questionnaires were administered to 478 individuals with PCOS to analyse trait EI, dysmorphic concerns, general distress, and HRQoL. Results: The results indicated that trait EI was negatively associated with dysmorphic concerns and general distress; dysmorphic concerns were positively related to general distress; dysmorphic concerns and general distress were negatively related to HRQoL; and dysmorphic concerns and general distress had a mediating role in the relationship between trait EI and HRQoL. Conclusion: The results suggest that individuals with PCOS may have a lower HRQoL and high levels of trait EI may represent a protective factor against poor HRQoL. The implications for clinical practice are discussed.

Objective: Suicide among college students is a major public health problem. Research has confirmed that negative focused disposition had a significant effect on suicidal ideation. This study aims to evaluate somatic anxiety, general distress and depression as mediators of the relationship between negative focused disposition and suicidal ideation. Methods: A total of 1798 college students (942 males) were recruited to complete measures of negative focused disposition, somatic anxiety, general distress, positive affect and suicidal ideation. The mediation models were conducted to assess the mediating effects of somatic anxiety, general distress and depression. Results: There was a significant and positive correlation between negative focused disposition and suicidal ideation in Chinese college students. On mediation analysis, somatic anxiety, general distress and depression mediated the relationship between negative focused disposition and suicidal ideation. Conclusions: Negative focused disposition appears to directedly associate with suicidal ideation and can indirectly relate to suicidal ideation through the relation with somatic anxiety, general distress and depression. The COVID-19 pandemic and outbreak response represent a global crisis that has affected various aspects of people's lives, including work. Speculation is rife about the impact of the crisis on employees. Countries and organizations worldwide have categorized some work as essential and, by extension, other work as nonessential. This study aims to investigate the impact of the pandemic by examining the relationship between work disruptions (at time 1) and general distress (at time 2) through various work stressors, contrasting the experiences of employees in essential versus nonessential work. For employees with essential jobs, there is a significant indirect effect of work disruptions on general distress through hindrance stressors. This relationship is not found for employees with nonessential jobs. The general distress of these employees is more strongly affected by disruptions through social stressors (here, social isolation). Hence, this study demonstrates how general distress is affected in different ways for employees conducting essential work and those conducting nonessential work. We further highlight the importance of considering social stressors in this relationship, especially for nonessential work. Organizational change communication quality mitigates the relationship between isolation and general distress for employees with nonessential jobs, but not for those with essential jobs. The aim of this study was to describe the mediating role of dysfunctional attitudes in the association between problematic internet use and general distress. The study was performed based on the correlational design. It included 543 university students (69.6% female, n = 378; 28.4% male, n = 154, 2% gender not stated, n = 11). The ages of university students participating in this cross-sectional study varied from 17 to 28 years and mean age was 18.49 years (SD = 1.06). Data were collected with the Problematic Internet Use Scale, Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale, Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-42) and a personal information form. Research findings showed significant correlations between variables. According to mediation analysis results, dysfunctional attitudes were determined to have a partial mediating role in the association between problematic internet use and depression and anxiety. Additionally, dysfunctional attitudes were found to have a fully mediating role in the association between problematic internet use and stress. When generally assessed, the indirect effects of problematic internet use on general distress were found to be significant. Background: A large proportion of the healthcare workforce reports significant distress and burnout, which can lead to poor patient care. Several psychological interventions, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), have been applied to improve general distress and work-related distress in healthcare professionals (HCPs). However, the overall efficacy of ACT in this context is unknown. This review and meta-analysis aimed to: 1) test the pooled efficacy of ACT trials for improving general distress and reducing work-related distress in HCPs; 2) evaluate the overall study quality and risk of bias; and 3) investigate potential moderators of intervention effectiveness.Method: Four databases (Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, CINHAL) were searched, with 22 pre-post design and randomised controlled trial (RCTs) studies meeting the inclusion criteria. 10 RCTs studies were included in the meta-analysis.Results: Two random effects meta-analyses on general distress and work-related distress found that ACT outperformed pooled control conditions with a small effect size for general distress at post-intervention (g = 0.394, CIs [.040; .748]) and for work-related distress (g = 0.301, CIs [.122; .480]) at follow-up. However, ACT was more effective than controls. The number of treatment sessions was a moderator of intervention efficacy for general distress. ACT process measures (psychological flexibility) did not show significantly greater improvements in those who received the intervention.Limitations: The methodological quality of studies was poor and needs to be improved.Conclusions: Overall, ACT interventions are effective in improving general distress and work-related distress in HCPs. This study evaluated the dimensionality, invariance, and reliability of the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale–21 (DASS-21) within and across Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, Romania, Taiwan, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and the United States (N = 2,580) in college student samples. We used confirmatory factor analyses to compare the fit of four different factor structures of the DASS-21: a unidimensional model, a three-correlated-factors model, a higher order model, and a bifactor model. The bifactor model, with three specific factors (depression, anxiety, and stress) and one general factor (general distress), presented the best fit within each country. We also calculated ancillary bifactor indices of model-based dimensionality of the DASS-21 and model-based reliability to further examine the validity of the composite total and subscale scores and the use of unidimensional modeling. Results suggested the DASS-21 can be used as a unidimensional scale. Finally, measurement invariance of the best fitting model was tested across countries indicating configural invariance. The traditional three-correlated-factors model presented scalar invariance across Canada, Hong Kong, Romania, Taiwan, and the United States. Overall, these analyses indicate that the DASS-21 would best be used as a general score of distress rather than three separate factors of depression, anxiety, and stress, in the countries studied. Aims: Resilience represents a fundamental element in the experience of pain, as it allows adaptation to suffering and increases psychological social well‐being and quality of life (QoL). We investigated resilience in patients affected by urologic chronic pelvic pain (UCPP) and the relationships with pain severity and distribution, catastrophizing and psychological distress. Methods: Forty‐eight consecutive UCPP patients were classified on a pain body map as being affected by pelvic pain only or widespread pain (WP), and underwent the evaluation of resilience with the 14‐item Resilience Scale (RS‐14), with higher scores indicating high resilience levels; scores < 56 denote very poor resilience. Pelvic and nonpelvic pain intensity and the bother of urinary symptoms on QoL were measured by means of Pain Numerical Rating Scale (PNRS) and Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) and Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS‐21) investigated catastrophizing and psychological conditions. Results: Overall, RS‐14 mean ± SD total score was 50.2 ± 12.5 in patients with pelvic pain only and 40.2 ± 10.2 in those with WP. Significant relationships were observed between low resilience levels and high scores of pelvic and nonpelvic PNRS, VAS, pain catastrophizing scale and depression and anxiety, stress scale (for all: p < 0.001). Significantly lower RS‐14 scores were detected in females and in patients with WP. Conclusions: A very poor resilience has been identified in UCPP patients, particularly in those with greater catastrophizing and mood alterations. WP and female gender were mostly affected. Aims: This study aimed to investigate the effects of the fear of COVID-19, level of physical activity, and gender on negative stress (distress) in an Arab population by means of structural equations based on partial least squares. Materials and Methods: The sample population comprised of 459 participants from four Arab countries (age M = 33.02, SD = 8.46; n = 237 women and n = 222 men). The level of education was basic (<9 years of study; n = 144), secondary/vocational (between 9 and 12; n = 178), and university (n = 137). The "Fear of COVID-19" Scale, the short form of the "International Physical Activity Questionnaire," and the "Perceived Stress Scale" questionnaires were disseminated by emails and social networks via Google Forms. SMARTPLS software version 3.2.9 was used to model the relationships between the variables under study. Results: Results confirmed the links between level of physical activity, fear of COVID-19, and gender, showing a significant mediating effect of the fear of COVID-19 on the relationship between gender and general distress. The level of physical activity was also found to influence the fear of COVID-19, varying depending on gender. In addition, the model highlighted the presence of a moderation effect of the level of physical activity. Conclusion: Based on the model presented in the present study, we can conclude that the COVID-19 pandemic has a profound impact on psychological distress in the target populations. Depression and anxiety often coexist in patients with end-stage-kidney disease. Recently, studies showed that a composite 'general distress score' which combines depression and anxiety symptoms provides a good fit in dialysis and oncology patients. We aim to investigate if the three most frequently used self-report questionnaires to measure depression and anxiety in dialysis patients are sufficiently unidimensional to warrant the use of such a general distress score in two cohorts of dialysis patients. This study includes two prospective observational cohorts of dialysis patients (total n = 749) which measured depression and anxiety using Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Confirmatory factor analyses was used to investigate both a strictly unidimensional model and a multidimensional bifactor model that includes a general distress, depression and anxiety factor. The comparative fit index (CFI) and The Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA) were used as model fit indices. Factor analysis did not show a good fit for a strictly unidimensional general distress factor for both the BDI/BAI and HADS (CFI 0.690 and 0.699, RMSEA 0.079 and 0.125 respectively). The multidimensional model performed better with a moderate fit for the BDI/BAI and HADS (CFI 0.873 and 0.839, RMSEA 0.052 and 0.102). This data shows that the BDI/BAI and HADS are insufficiently unidimensional to warrant the use of a general distress score in dialysis patients without also investigating anxiety and depression separately. Future research is needed whether the use of a general distress score might be beneficial to identify patients in need of additional (psychological) support. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Alexithymia is a clinically relevant personality trait characterized by poor emotional awareness and associated with several psychological and physical health concerns. Individuals with high alexithymia tend to engage in experiential avoidance and this may mediate psychological distress. However, little is known about what specific processes of experiential avoidance are involved, and the nature of the relation between alexithymia, experiential avoidance, and psychological distress remains unclear at a latent construct level. To examine this relationship at the latent construct level, a representative sample of 693 U.S. adults completed alexithymia (TAS-20, BVAQ, PAQ), general distress (DASS-21), multi-dimensional experiential avoidance (MEAQ), and general health (PROMIS-G-10) questionnaires. Structural equation modeling revealed that alexithymia significantly predicted experiential avoidance (β = 0.966, t = 82.383, p <.01), experiential avoidance significantly predicted general distress (β = 0.810, t = 2.017, p <.05), and experiential avoidance fully mediated the relationship between alexithymia and general distress (β indirect = −0.159, t = −0.398, p >.05). Correlations between alexithymia and experiential avoidance subfactors revealed a strong relationship to the repression and denial subfactor. Experiential avoidance is a promising target for clinical interventions, though longitudinal research is necessary to elucidate how the relationship between alexithymia and experiential avoidance unfolds over time. Highlights • The associations of positivity, general distress and internet addiction were examined. • There were significant associations among POS, GD and IA. • POS exerted a significant indirect effect on IA through depression. • Anxiety and stress partially mediated POS-IA relationship. Abstract The aim of the present study was to examine the relationships between positivity and general distress (including depression, anxiety, stress) and internet addiction and the mediating effects of general distress. The theoretical model was examined with 392 volunteers who were university students. Participants filled out the Positivity Scale (POS), Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale (DASS) and Short Form of Young's Internet Addiction Test (YIAT-SF). The results revealed that there were significant associations among positivity, general distress and internet addiction. According to the results of mediation analysis using structural equation modelling and bootstrapping, depression fully mediated the positivity-internet addiction relationship, whilst anxiety and stress partially mediated it. Bootstrap analysis indicated that positivity exerted a significant indirect effect on internet addiction through depression. Overall, the results implied the potential therapeutic effect of positivity which leads to a direct decrease in general distress and an indirect decrease in internet addiction through general distress. In addition, internet addiction may be considered as a secondary problem rather than a primary disorder. The results provide opportunities to design psychological interventions focused on improving positivity which may lead to a decrease in general distress which involves a mechanism preventing individuals from applying a positive reinforcement process. Childhood sexual abuse can be extremely traumatic and lead to lifelong symptomatology. The present study examined the impact of several demographic, abuse, and psychosocial variables on posttraumatic stress disorder severity among a consecutive sample of treatment-seeking, adult child sexual abuse survivors (N= 480). The child sexual abuse sample was characterized by severe trauma exposure, insecure attachment, and significant traumatization, with an estimated 77% suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder, more than twice the level of the comparison group. Regression analyses revealed risk factors associated with the development of posttraumatic stress disorder in which the strongest predictors being additional traumas, negative affectivity, and somatization. The findings add to existing research confirming the stressful nature of child sexual abuse and the variables that contribute to the development and severity of posttraumatic stress disorder. Abstract: Background: Findings on the association between life events and depression have been quite inconsistent. This could be due to the heterogeneity of traditionally used depression outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate whether specific symptom dimensions can be used as an alternative to detect more specific life event effects. Methods: Participants with/without psychiatric diagnoses were included (n=2252). Dimensions of the tripartite model (General Distress [GD], Anhedonic Depression [AD] and Anxious Arousal [AA]) were assessed at baseline, 1-year and 2-year follow-up. Life events occurring between measurements were assessed retrospectively. Longitudinal associations between life events and dimensional scores were analysed with Linear Mixed Models. Results: Occurrence of negative life events was associated with increasing GD and AA, and less with AD. Positive life events were associated with decreasing GD and AD, but not with AA. The association between negative life events and AD was larger in the absence of previous psychiatric problems, lending support to a dimension-specific ‘kindling’ effect. Also, the negative association between negative life events and GD was stronger in those with high neuroticism. Multivariable analyses with individual life events showed that a few strong independent effects remained for each dimension. Limitations: Life event reports were retrospective; only three outcome dimensions were used. Conclusions: These results show that the effects of life events and modifying factors depend, to an extent, on the symptom domain that is considered as outcome, illustrating the need to account for symptom heterogeneity in etiological life event research.
