Oldsmobile of Lansing, MI, recently sent out customized direct mailings that featured Wizard of Oz's characters, Dorothy and Toto, preparing to cruise down the yellow brick road in its new Silhouette Premiere minivan. The customized mailings, which are part of the automaker's integrated marketing campaign, targeted four groups: existing Oldsmobile minivan owners, interested buyers of minivans, mid-sized car owners and other minivan owners. The pieces emphasized mainly on the Silhouette Premiere minivan's full entertainment system, including VCR and pull-down monitor as well as CD and casette player, as standard equipment. Other mail pieces featured the minivan with King Kong and Tom and Jerry under agreement with Time Warner and Turner Broadcasting.

Oldsmobile has launched its first direct response campaign for its $31,175 Silhouette Premiere minivan, featuring a tie-in with Blockbuster Video. The campaign, which goes after families with children ages 9 to 13, will be composed of direct mail, a Web site, television and direct response print ads. There is a tie-in with Blockbuster because the Silhouette offers a built-in entertainment center filled with videocassette recorder and compact disc player. One million direct mail pieces will be sent by Oldsmobile in October 1998 to a nationwide list prepared by The Polk Co.

ABC, along with the Oldsmobile division of General Motors, rolled out in September 1998 'Start Something Tuesdays on ABC,' which is touted as the biggest automobile sweepstakes in history. Viewers were required to answer trivia questions about ABC's four programs in its fall line up that made their debut on Sep. 22, 1998. These were 'Spin City,' 'Home Improvement,' and two new shows, 'Sports Night' and 'The Hughleys.' The top prize was the brand new $20,000 Oldsmobile Alero. Viewers secured sweeps entry forms and instructions via local sponsors and on ABC's Web site (www.abc.com).

General Motors Corp.'s Oldsmobile Div. will procure the Northstar-derived 3.5L DOHC V-6 engine for its Intrigue car model, at the beginning of 1999 production. While it will be initially available in the Intrigue GLS, the new all-aluminum 24-valve engine will ultimately become standard by end-1999 as it replaces the OHV 3800 V-6. Rated at 215 hp at 5,600 rpm, and 230 ft.-lbs. of torque at 4,400 rpm, the new V-6 engine has a limp-home capability in case of sudden loss of coolant, while maintenance is configured to be minimal, with no service aside from oil and filters for the first 100,000 miles.
