Abstract

Fruit production should be adapted to future scenarios that are frequently associated with scarce resources, especially freshwater and fertilizers. New biologically-based fruit production strategies, i.e. taking into account tree growth and water status, are required to optimize irrigation and fertilization under abiotic stress conditions. It was hypothesized that a moderate abiotic stress, here deficit irrigation with or without nitrogen deficit, in the preharvest period, could decrease postharvest losses due to diseases and pruning weights due to reduced vegetative growth, without sacrificing the yield and fruit quality. This study was conducted over two years using the same trees of ‘Moncante’ nectarine cultivar grown in a commercial orchard. Trees were assigned to three treatments: (1) full irrigation at 80% estimated crop evapotranspiration (ETc), (2) deficit irrigation, i.e. at 75% of full irrigation, and (3) deficit irrigation and deficit nitrogen, i.e. at 75% of full irrigation and 75% of usual N-fertilization adopted by the grower in this commercial orchard. Deficit irrigation alone and in combination with deficit nitrogen reduced postharvest diseases and pruning weights without significant yield losses. Our results suggest that ETc-based approaches of reduced water irrigation may be a sustainable way to decrease phytosanitary inputs and workload in the orchard while maintaining the orchard performance.

Abstract

International audience; Consumers appreciate ‘Amasya’, the most important local apple cultivar of Turkey, but not producers because of several production constraints that complicate management of the cultivar (e.g., low yield, biennial bearing, early blooming and poor fruit skin colouring). Based on this background, ‘Amasya’ scions were irradiated to obtain mutants. Irradiated buds were grafted by bench grafting on M.9 rootstocks, and 857 trees were obtained in the nursery. Phenotyping of the mutant population for architectural traits, precocity, floral phenology and fruit characteristics was conducted under orchard conditions to identify variation among individuals. Induced mutation highly affected all variables studied. Cluster and principal component analyses confirmed considerable variation in the population. Some of the mutants were determined as superiors for the studied variables. Based on the recorded data as well as visual observations, we conclude that genotypes M181, M229, M274, M285, and M472 indicated superiority in the architectural characteristics. The five mutants (namely M112, M129, M293, M383, and M489) showed quite a late flowering in comparison to the others.

Abstract

UMR AGAP - équipe AFEF - Architecture et fonctionnement des espèces fruitières; International audience; Diel growth dynamic is one of the most significant interest areas of plant-water relations, with practical applications for irrigation scheduling. In the present study, we determined the effects of two irrigation regimes: well-watered (WW) and waterstressed (WS) on diel branch growth dynamic. Dendrometers were placed on main branches of 10-year-old nectarine trees for both treatments, in a commercial orchard. The readings were monitored at ~15 min intervals. The amount of irrigation water was determined using evapotranspiration (ET) values, with full irrigation for WW and 25% water restriction for WS. During this period, the days that were high (1.62 kPa) and low (0.11 kPa) in maximum (max) vapour pressure deficit (VPD) were taken as extreme days. The timing of the maximum diameter increment of the branch in both extreme days did not change notably with irrigation treatment and VPD. In the high VPD day, the maximum diameter of the branch was earlier compared to the low VPD day. However, the timing of minimum diameter showed a difference between water regimes on the low VPD day, with an earlier/later minimum on WW-branch. The higher VPD in WW increased the maximum diel shrinkage in the branch compared to WS. As a whole, our study showed that for a given water regime, the diameter growth of a branch may be strongly altered by VPD.

Abstract

Fruit production has to be adapted to climate change that is often associated with heat and water deficit episodes. To develop efficient strategies on how to manage commercial orchards under deficit water supply, we need to know the effects of water-stress on crop production. However, when the water supply is abundant apple growers often think that over-irrigation gives higher marketable fruit yield than potential evapotranspiration-based or sensor-based (e.g. tensiometer, dendrometer) irrigation. We therefore aimed to evaluate the effects of three water regimes, namely well-watered (100% of crop evapotranspiration - ETc, WW), 25% of ETc water deficit over the season (water-stressed, WS), and twofold of WW (200% of ETc, 2xWW), on midday stem water potential (SWP), crop yield and fruit quality of Pink LadyTM 'Rosy Glow' apples. As expected, SWP was lower in WS than in the others, but both WS and 2xWW decreased fruit yield, although 2xWW tended to increase yield in the >70% color class and ensured quite a constant amount of yield at each picking time. Soluble solid content (SSC) in fruit was higher in WS. As a whole, our results suggest that over-irrigation that is sometimes recommended to keep a safety margin should be considered with caution. Rather, a mild water-stress, between WS and WW in our experiment, may represent a good compromise for a good quality yield.

Abstract

The Virtual Atomic and Molecular Data Centre (VAMDC) Consortium is a worldwide consortium which federates atomic and molecular databases through an e-science infrastructure and an organisation to support this activity. About 90% of the inter-connected databases handle data that are used for the interpretation of astronomical spectra and for modelling in many fields of astrophysics. Recently the VAMDC Consortium has connected databases from the radiation damage and the plasma communities, as well as promoting the publication of data from Indian institutes. This paper describes how the VAMDC Consortium is organised for the optimal distribution of atomic and molecular data for scientific research. It is noted that the VAMDC Consortium strongly advocates that authors of research papers using data cite the original experimental and theoretical papers as well as the relevant databases.

Abstract

Professional and scientific networks built around the production of sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) led to the collection of phenology data for a wide range of cultivars grown in experimental sites characterized by highly contrasted climatic conditions. We present a dataset of flowering and maturity dates, recorded each year for one tree when available, or the average of several trees for each cultivar, over a period of 37 years (1978–2015). Such a dataset is extremely valuable for characterizing the phenological response to climate change, and the plasticity of the different cultivars’ behaviour under different environmental conditions. In addition, this dataset will support the development of predictive models for sweet cherry phenology exploitable at the continental scale, and will help anticipate breeding strategies in order to maintain and improve sweet cherry production in Europe.

Abstract

Climate-smart sustainable management of agricultural soil is critical to improve soil health, enhance food and water security, contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity preservation, and improve human health and wellbeing. The European Joint Programme for Soil (EJP SOIL) started in 2020 with the aim to significantly improve soil management knowledge and create a sustainable and integrated European soil research system. EJP SOIL involves more than 350 scientists across 24 Countries and has been addressing multiple aspects associated with soil management across different European agroecosystems. This study summarizes the key findings of stakeholder consultations conducted at the national level across 20 countries with the aim to identify important barriers and challenges currently affecting soil knowledge but also assess opportunities to overcome these obstacles. Our findings demonstrate that there is significant room for improvement in terms of knowledge production, dissemination and adoption. Among the most important barriers identified by consulted stakeholders are technical, political, social and economic obstacles, which strongly limit the development and full exploitation of the outcomes of soil research. The main soil challenge across consulted member states remains to improve soil organic matter and peat soil conservation while soil water storage capacity is a key challenge in Southern Europe. Findings from this study clearly suggest that going forward climate-smart sustainable soil management will benefit from (1) increases in research funding, (2) the maintenance and valorisation of long-term (field) experiments, (3) the creation of knowledge sharing networks and interlinked national and European infrastructures, and (4) the development of regionally-tailored soil management strategies. 10. Potential application of cryogenic freezer on turbot sperm cryopreservation.

Abstract

Background: Cryopreservation is a common practice to preserve fish sperm for prolonged periods., Objective: To examine the effect of different freezing protocols on sperm characteristics, fertilization, and hatching rate of turbot., Materials and Methods: Milt was obtained from ten 8-year-old turbot (54.3 ± 1.7 cm in length and 3,106 ±283 g in weight) at the peak of spawning season. Six batches of milts with >90% motility was pooled and diluted to 1:3 by adding dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO, 10%) as cryoprotectant. Then straws filled with semen were subjected to three freezing protocols (cooling rates). Sperm characteristics were assessed using sperm class analyzer before and after cryopreservation. Cryopreserved and fresh sperm were used for artificial fertilization to assess fertilization and hatching rates., Results: Cryopreservation protocol has significantly deleterious effects on total motility, progressive motility, curvilinear velocity, straight line velocity, average path velocity, linearity index, straightness index, oscillation index, and amplitude of lateral head displacement of sperm. However, the beat frequency of cryopreserved sperm was found to be similar to control sperm. The fertilization rate of sperm subjected to three freezing protocols were similar, varying between 65.3 % and 75.6 %, and the hatching rates varied from 51.2 % to 70.7 %., Conclusion: The results show the potential application of cryopreservation in fish hatcheries. doi.org/10.54680/fr22410110312.
