This article analyzes the social, family, and country relations between a Zapotec community on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and the main cities where they emigrate to pursue higher education. At the same time, it shows the transformations in gender relations that have arisen because of these migratory processes for educational purposes. This work is part of a long-term investigation on the topic, carried out initially for my bachelor's and master's thesis and later as part of the development of my doctoral thesis from 2009 to 2013. Likewise, in the intermittent research that I have carried out to date, the results are expressed in various articles and book chapters. It is part of the studies of the anthropology of education and is based on the analytical perspective proposed by María Bertely (1997, 1998, 2004, 2019) on schooling processes, ethnogenesis, de facto autonomy, and synchronic/diachronic approach to understanding how micro and community processes, apparently isolated in time, are connected to structural, macro-social, global, and long-term processes, such as school, in its broadest sense. The methodology is based on the use of genealogy, ethnography, interviews, and participant observation as classic tools of anthropology. Among the results, we find that access to the school system, and specifically to higher education, serves as a tool for obtaining, manipulating, and preserving ethnic citizenship; for the transformation of ethnic and gender identities; and the formation of strategic alliances with the nation-state and its government policies. In that sense, the work represents an original study, analyzing the cases of Zapotec literate families of the middle and upper class, rare in Mexican anthropology. However, we will see that having class privileges does not exempt Zapotecs from experiencing racism, discrimination, and gender inequalities in the context of migration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To reflect on the methodological approach, mainly on research that takes subalternated, racialized, and colonized groups as "subjects of study." Those are groups that historically have been invisible and hidden in academic research due to acts of violence, epistemic extractivism, and discursive colonialism. Methodology: The fieldwork experience is systematized based on indepth interviews with activists and the reconstruction of the political path of the Network of Afro-Latin American, Afro-Caribbean and Diaspora Women (RMAAD), born in 1992 in the Dominican Republic. Results: The main contributions of feminisms of the global south, decolonialism, and Abya Ayala proposed in a profound reflection on methodological practices in the Latin American context are revealed. These contributions concern understanding the female subject in a heterogeneous, plural, and situated way, and question the idea of a universal woman subject, as well as the intellectual dependence on the global north and the claim of objectivity as part of social sciences and humanities. Conclusions: Preliminary conclusions will be specified to open new remarks and to rethink, reformulate, and problematize methodological practices and the way knowledge is built in the Latin American and Caribbean academic fields. In a genetically admixed population, admixed individuals possess genealogical and genetic ancestry from multiple source groups. Under a mechanistic model of admixture, we study the number of distinct ancestors from the source populations that the admixture represents. Combining a mechanistic admixture model with a recombination model that describes the probability that a genealogical ancestor is a genetic ancestor, for a member of a genetically admixed population, we count genetic ancestors from the source populations—those genealogical ancestors from the source populations who contribute to the genome of the modern admixed individual. We compare patterns in the numbers of genealogical and genetic ancestors across the generations. To illustrate the enumeration of genetic ancestors from source populations in an admixed group, we apply the model to the African-American population, extending recent results on the numbers of African and European genealogical ancestors that contribute to the pedigree of an African-American chosen at random, so that we also evaluate the numbers of African and European genetic ancestors who contribute to random African-American genomes. The model suggests that the autosomal genome of a random African-American born in the interval 1960–1965 contains genetic contributions from a mean of 162 African (standard deviation 47, interquartile range 127–192) and 32 European ancestors (standard deviation 14, interquartile range 21–43). The enumeration of genetic ancestors can potentially be performed in other diploid species in which admixture and recombination models can be specified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mangrove plant seedling cultivation is crucial for the protection, management, and restoration of the mangrove ecosystem. In this study, we focused on Kandelia obovata Sheue & al., a typical mangrove, and evaluated nursery cultivation with different combinations of three salinity levels (S1: 0 ppt, S2: 10 ppt, and S3: 20 ppt), three genealogies (EZD, JX, and YZ), and five growth media (M1: 100% loess, M2: 100% sandy, M3: 50% loess + 50% sandy, M4: 40% loess + 40% sandy + 20% peat, and M5: 40% loess + 40% sandy + 20% coir), by measuring the growth parameters such as mortality rate, seedling height, seedling diameter, and biomass partition. These growth indexes were significantly affected by salinity and medium, and genealogies also had significant effects on mortality rate and biomass accumulation. S2 or S3 both had lower mortality and higher growth indexes than S1. M1 was the medium that increased seedling height, diameter, and biomass the most and had the lowest death rate. EZD and JX were also at higher levels than YZ in these indicators, but the difference between them was not obvious. S3, M1, and EZD consistently performed well in fuzzy evaluation and quality assessment (Dickson quality index: 1.179, 1.478, and 1.089, respectively). Furthermore, combinations involving these treatments also produced highly favorable results. This indicates that the quality of seedlings produced under these conditions was high. These results furnish both a theoretical and practical foundation for advancing nursery cultivation techniques and germplasm breeding of K. obovata in mangroves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper the author looks at the letters of two renowned women mathematicians and scientists of the Victorian period, Mary Somerville and Ada Lovelace, while also considering the imperceptibility of Sophie Germain, an important French mathematician and philosopher in their epistolary exchanges and philosophical writings. Drawing on the importance of mathematical correspondences and epistolary education in the creation, circulation and dissemination of knowledge, as well as in processes of formal and informal learning, the author argues that Lovelace’s and Somerville’s letters leave traces of a remarkable genealogical line of women’s mentorship and personal relations in the nineteenth century world of British mathematics in the backdrop of contradictory discourses around gender, mathematics, and science education. The article explores the need to read the Bible as one comprehensive story despite the fact that it contains different literary genres, plots and subplots, characters, etc. Also, it is pointed out that even the non-historical parts of the Bible contain a story and/or are part of some larger story that we must have in mind when we read and/or interpret these parts. For this purpose, the first part of the article describes and defines the concept of God's comprehensive story, and the second part shows, using selected examples (the Law, genealogy, Psalm 1), what the interpretation looks like when God’s comprehensive story is taken into account or neglected. The article concludes that the rediscovery of God's comprehensive story as it is written in the Bible is crucial because otherwise, Christianity not only harms Judaism, but also deprives itself of knowing the fullness of God's word if it reads the Bible only in accordance with theological systems that have developed during the history of the Church.

Towards the mid-seventeenth century, a vast network of consolidated and interconnected American cities expanded with established power spaces, where diverse strategies of government over Indian populations and territories were deployed. In this paper we will schematically reconstruct this political rationale, the forms of government aiming at the organization of populations undergoing demographic destruction since the beginning of the 1500s. We will trace back the clues to the political problem at instituting an order, building and maintaining a city, the type of governmental rationale and the indigenous populations it strategically targets. In the archives, we will investigate those statements about an art of government of the Indies that aims at directing the populations to make them work in certain conditions, to make them occupy a specific position in the space of the city, to obtain docile bodies. This article investigates the territorial and landscape construction of Marmilla, a historical region in central-southern Sardinia, in the early modern period. The analysis of the agrarian structures, the political-institutional context, the settlement model and the genealogical and patrimonial network of aristocratic and upper-class families aims to verify how these elements contributed to the survival of the villages, now exposed to the phenomenon of depopulation. The first part of the article focuses on feudal events and their reflection in the agrarian system and landscape. The second part of the paper describes the genealogical and patrimonial network of the main aristocratic lineages and agrarian élites, underlining the competition for economic and political power. The main archival sources used are of economic, cadastral and political-administrative nature. The work is intended as a basis for future local and territorial development projects to be implemented in a transdisciplinary perspective, recovering the virtuous aspects of the network between communities developed during the early modern and modern time. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, the Ottoman state's efforts to centralize the Syndicate of Prophetic Descendants (niqābat al-ašrāf) was paralleled by the massive growth of Prophetic descendants (sādah and ašrāf) and the mass conversion to the Šīʿah among the tribes in the Iraqi provinces. This contribution aims to shed new light on the role of Abū l-Hudà al-Ṣayyādī (1266/1850-1327/1909), the imperial naqīb al-ašrāf and paramount šayḫ and architect of the Sunnī Rifāʿiyyah Sufi order, in this context. Analyzing a selection of Ṣayyādī's publications on genealogies, Sufi doctrine, and poem collections, the article focuses on his contribution to the emergence of a special subgroup of Prophetic descendants in the Arab tribal landscape, namely al-sādah al-rifāʿiyyah , and on the significance of his genealogical constructions for his understanding of Sunnī Islam as distinct from Šīʿism. This article looks at the phenomenon of the writing of Cherifian genealogies, which came to the fore in Morocco in general, and in northern Morocco in particular, with the emergence of the Alawite dynasty. The case of Tétouan, which was the center of the governors of northern Morocco at the time, will be studied, examining the city's relationship to the phenomenon of Sherifism. The article examines the reason for the emergence of works specializing in chorfa genealogies at the time of Mawlāy Ismāʿīl in Tetouan. We'll see how attempts were made to distinguish the chorfa as a noble class distinct from the masses in certain tribes, particularly among the Banī ʿArūs and the Banī Ḥassān, and their consequences, including the phenomenon of the "so-called chorfa" (al-mutašarrifah) since the 15th century. This phenomenon was at the origin of the genealogical registration movement in the Alawite period. In this study, we will examine two examples of the oldest treatises on the genealogy of the chorfa in Tétouan, these are Dawaʿī al-ṭarab fī -ẖtisāri ansāb al-ʿarab written by Ibn al-ʿĀfiyah al-Zaǧnī, and Šaḏar al-ḏahab fī ẖayr nasab written by Ibn Raḥmūn al-Ḥasanī. These two books share very similar characteristics in terms of the nature of the content, based on literal transmission and data collection in the first instance, with very limited scope for discussion and analysis. In conclusion, we will discuss the degree of success they achieved in combating the mutašarrifah phenomenon in northern Morocco. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We model spatially expanding populations by means of two spatial Λ-Fleming Viot processes (or SLFVs) with selection: the k-parent SLFV and the ∞-parent SLFV. In order to do so, we fill empty areas with type 0 "ghost" individuals with a strong selective disadvantage against "real" type 1 individuals, quantified by a parameter k. The reproduction of ghost individuals is interpreted as local extinction events due to stochasticity in reproduction. When k → +∞, the limiting process, corresponding to the ∞-parent SLFV, is reminiscent of stochastic growth models from percolation theory, but is associated to tools making it possible to investigate the genetic diversity in a population sample. In this article, we provide a rigorous construction of the ∞-parent SLFV, and show that it corresponds to the limit of the k-parent SLFV when k → +∞. In order to do so, we introduce an alternative construction of the k-parent SLFV which allows us to couple SLFVs with different selection strengths and is of interest in its own right. We exhibit three different characterizations of the ∞-parent SLFV, which are valid in different settings and link together population genetics models and stochastic growth models. We consider what genealogical links, kinship and sociality are promised through the marketing of assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs). Using a mixed method of formal analysis of Facebook's algorithmic architectures and textual analysis of twenty-eight adverts for egg donation drawn from the Facebook Ad Library, we analyse the ways in which the figure of the 'fertile woman' is constituted both within the text and at the level of Facebook's targeted advertising systems. We critically examine the ways in which ART clinics address those women whose eggs they wish to harvest and exchange, in combination with the ways in which Facebook's architecture identifies, and sorts those women deemed of 'relevance' to the commercial ART industry. We find that women variously appear in these adverts as empowered consumers, generous girlfriends, potential mothers and essentialised bodies who provide free-floating eggs. The genealogical and fertility possibility offered through ART is represented with banal ambiguity wherein potentially disruptive forms of biogenetic relatedness and arrangements of kinship are derisked by an overarching narrative of simplicity and sameness which excludes men, messy genealogies and explicitly queer forms of kinship. This rationalisation is supported by the simplicity and certainty of the Facebook targeted advertising algorithm which produces a coherent audience and interpellates users as fertile subjects whose choices are both biologically determined and only available through clinical intervention. Tuti Island is a river island located at the junction of the Blue and the White Nile in Greater Khartoum, the capital region of the Sudan. Through the process of documenting their genealogies, some of inhabitants of Tuti Island have constructed a historical narrative about the origins and early settlement of the island and of the Maḥas extended families who live there. For many of the Maḥas of Tuti, documenting their genealogies is a way of overcoming their fear about the island losing its uniqueness, because of urban master plans through which the island is envisioned as a waterfront development. By attaching their families' histories to the island, they hope to assert their sense of belonging. Moreover, some of the island's genealogists have traced their genealogical lines as far back as the time before their ancestors migrated from northern Sudan and ended up on Tuti island. The social alienation Maḥas Tuti are experiencing plays a vital role in driving people to attach their genealogies and family histories to Qāmī, the "original" land of the Maḥas of Tuti island and construct an imagined homeland. This article offers to re-examine a number of conclusions in the recent publication of J. Mabra on the governorate of ‘Abd al-‘Azīz b. Marwān in Egypt (65/685-86/705). The book offers an account of the tribal alliances that allowed the Marwanids to access to the califate as well as an examination of some of the dynamics between ‘Abd al-Malik (65/685-86/705) and his governors of Egypt and Iraq. J. Mabra understands the administration of ‘Abd al-‘Azīz as independent from the caliphal centre in Damascus and opposed to his brother’s reform on language use and coinage. After reconsidering the reading of a number of papyrus documents, coins and narrative sources, it is offered here to see the appointment of such a governor as one of the keys to the Marwanid success and to reject the idea that caliphal ruling strategies aimed at centralizing the Umayyad realm.

Once, when questioned about the originality of Umberto Eco’s Il nome della rosa (1980), Richard Krautheimer gave one of his rare and atypically acerbic replies: “you obviously haven’t read much Sherlock Holmes”. In many ways the volume discussed here provoked in the reviewer a similar response because, when reading through a number of the ten papers presented in these conference proceedings, he kept thinking: “but what about Argan?”. In this case Giulio Carlo Argan playing Canon Doyle, to Gilles Deleuze’s Eco, the latter’s Le Pli of 1988 to Argan’s brilliant but overlooked essay “La retorica e l’arte barocca” of 1955 which is not cited a single time in this book nor present in the bibliography. Acknowledging the importance of Argan (mentioned only in passing on p. 22) would not make Deleuze’s work appear any less innovative, but it certainly would have helped explain more persuasively the significant shifts in post-war perception and reception of the Baroque that were part of the historical preamble to the appearance of Leibniz et le baroque.

The recent literature on “marine sovereignty” encourages to consider the ways of management and governance of the Pacific Ocean from a new perspective, in order to face the ecological crisis and acknowledge the coexistence of different ontologies. In this paper I aim to convey the density and the poly-chrony that characterize the aquatic ontology of the Belema people, the inhabitants of the Belep Islands (Kanaky New Caledonia). For the Belema, the ocean is more than a surface to cross or the source of important economic resources. The ocean is a dense space: visible and invisible intertwine in its opaque depth; past and present, life and death mingle; human and non-human meet. The aquatic geography (a hydrography, punctuated by underwater villages and paths), the genealogies (in which the first ancestors are marine animals) and the continuities and correspondences between aquatic and terrestrial beings reveal the force of the ocean. It shapes the Belema society and contributes to making it a more-than-human society.

We revisit the Spatial Λ -Fleming–Viot process introduced in Barton and Kelleher (2010). Particularly, we are interested in the time T 0 to the most recent common ancestor for two lineages. We distinguish between the cases where the process acts on the two-dimensional plane and on a finite rectangle. Utilizing a differential equation linking T 0 with the physical distance between the lineages, we arrive at computationally efficient and reasonably accurate approximation schemes for both cases. Furthermore, our analysis enables us to address the question of whether the genealogical process of the model "comes down from infinity", which has been partly answered before in Véber and Wakolbinger (2015). Aim: Colonization is a central topic in ecology and one of the cornerstones of island biogeography. Although the evolutionary history of island species is widely studied, the quantification of colonization is particularly challenging because the same area may be colonized multiple times by the same species, whereas initially successful colonization events may eventually be followed by extinction. Nevertheless, an estimation of the actual number of within‐archipelago colonization events can be achieved when using adequate sample size and genetic data, which are essential parameters in the inference of colonization success of any species. Location: Canary Islands, Azores and Galápagos Islands. Taxon Buteo galapagoensis, Croton scouleri, Setophaga petechia aureola and Xylocopa darwini (Galápagos); Canarina canariensis, Cistus monspeliensis, Juniperus cedrus and Olea europaea subsp. guanchica (Canary Islands); and Juniperus brevifolia and Picconia azorica (Azores). Methods: The new R package PAICE uses haplotype (from organelle DNA) sharing and haplotype relationships, and controls for sampling effort to estimate the number of within‐archipelago colonization events in island‐like systems. PAICE applies a sampling‐effort correction based on rarefaction curves of field sampling (number of individuals or populations) and genetic sampling (number of DNA variable positions). The number of colonization events for the 10 insular species were estimated with PAICE and results compared with previous methods. Results: PAICE estimates a number of inter‐island colonization events up to an order of magnitude greater than previous methods. Furthermore, PAICE can quantify the colonization events of any study species, in multiple biogeographic contexts and considering sampling size, thus providing a standardized estimate of colonization success. Main conclusions: The new package PAICE provides an estimation of the number of inter‐island colonization events (regardless of dispersal routes or rates) based on haplotype data across islands. This new tool will allow gaining new insights on the intensity of long‐distance‐dispersal events, their drivers and consequences for the assembly of insular faunas and floras. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, I argue that the critical capacity of the intersectional perspective is enhanced when it is articulated with the materialist perspective that involves a particular type of practice. This practice read social processes as part of a complex whole structure with tensions, ambiguities, and contradictions. It intervenes conceiving theory and practice as inseparable. Facing fragmented, simplistic, additive and unidimensional analyses centered on a single axis of oppression, the articulation between both critical perspectives has the power to address the multiple oppressions in a complex way, within the framework of contradictory and unequal social formations. I emphasize that the potential of the articulation between both critical perspectives is requiring the recovery of critical genealogies, which is able to explain the knotting between body and politics in opposition to the dichotomous logic that insists on separating them. Furthermore, the mapping of critical genealogies allows us to revitalize intersectional analysis - in the context of the processes of neutralization and simplification that annul the concept - and to show its political core in the practical background. This challenge the deterministic readings that invalidate struggles and resistances; to move on to the epistemic and political recognition of the knowledge produced from the margins. The article examines one of the unique works in the manuscript RGADA Coll. 201 (Obolensky). Desc. 1. archival unit 88 – a contamination, including an excerpt from the Life of Stefan Lazarevich by Constantine of Kostenec and a genealogical diagram. Both texts trace the genealogy of the Nemanjic dynasty in two branches, beginning with Stefan Parvovenchani and Vulkan, respectively. The excerpt from the hagiographic text contains information mainly about the descendants of Stephen. The second part does not overlap with any known Serbian genealogy or chronicle, has a larger chronological scope and ends with Jovan Brankovic. The persons included in the Genealogy are united not only by their belonging to the dynasty, but also by the fact that they are rulers (or wives of rulers). The text in the manuscript Obolen. 88 testifies to a different understanding of power, and this is what distinguishes it from other preserved Serbian genealogies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper will focus on several sources from Scandinavia and the Balkans, and compare the types of genealogies portrayed in them – descent from gods, descent from another kind of supernatural being, descent from a legendary hero. The paper will examine the types of genealogies and the purpose they serve; how and why they were commissioned? Is there a difference in the establishment of the image of the ruler if the latter has descended from gods, legendary heroes, or a specific clan or dynasty? Does Christianity change the tradition of writing genealogies and the stories they retell? Are personal qualities enough to provide legitimate claims?

In this paper, we share the experience of collecting and organizing pre-modern Korean historical materials into a searchable digital archive. The Ajou Interdisciplinary Research Group (AIRG) has continuously collected historical data of pre-modern Korea for the past 10 years to assist the study of family history, historical demographics, and social mobility. This paper describes the rich data sources for historical studies of Korea, such as household registers, genealogies, and state examination registers, and we summarize contributions to the study of historical demography and related fields.

Gene genealogies are frequently studied by measuring properties such as their height (H), length (L), sum of external branches (E), sum of internal branches (I), and mean of their two basal branches (B), and the coalescence times that contribute to the other genealogical features (T). These tree properties and their relationships can provide insight into the effects of population-genetic processes on genealogies and genetic sequences. Here, under the coalescent model, we study the 15 correlations among pairs of features of genealogical trees: H n , L n , E n , I n , B n , and T k for a sample of size n , with 2 ≤ k ≤ n. We report high correlations among H n , L n , I n , and B n , with all pairwise correlations of these quantities having values greater than or equal to 6 [ 6 ζ (3) + 6 − π 2 ] / (π 18 + 9 π 2 − π 4 ) ≈ 0. 84930 in the limit as n → ∞ , where ζ is the Riemann zeta function. Although E n has expectation 2 for all n and H n has expectation 2 in the n → ∞ limit, their limiting correlation is 0. Introduction. Mobility, and less so immobility, has been always in the focus of socio-cultural analysis of Mongolian societies given their nomadic way of live and the interconnectedness of its various communities scattered all over Eurasia particular in the apogee of the Mongol Empire during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Yet, what are the concrete manifestations and the limits of mobility, how can we measure them? Goal. This article will briefly readdress some well and perhaps lesser known topics of the medieval Mongolian world generally related to mobility in a wider sense before fuller attention is given to the epistemological arenas of culture transfer and long-distance trade. In the first part the dialectics of mobility is discussed as socio-cultural mobility, e.g. carrier making, loyalty, integration by difference, models of inclusive ethnicity and exclusive descent (the ‘Chinggisid Principle’), invention of genealogies, marriage alliances, and religious tolerance (until Islamisation). The second part deals with spatial mobility particularly in terms of tribute relations and military service, culture transfer and travelling ideas, movement control and population transfer, the flow of goods and peoples.

This paper aims at reconstructing the genealogy of Siberian Tatars of Knyazevs (Western Siberia), identifying the origins of their surname, which is not characteristic of the Tatars, and at analysis of the influence of socio-political and socio-economical processes in Russia in the 18th through 20th centuries on the social transformation of the family. The sources were represented by the materials of the Inventory Revision Book of Tarsky District of 1701 and census surveys of the end of 18th through 19th centuries, which allowed tracing the Knyazev family through the genealogical succession and identifying social status of its members. In this work, recordkeeping materials of the 18th–20th centuries and contemporary genealogical and historical traditions of the Tatars have been utilized. In the research, the method of genealogical reconstructions by archival materials and their correlation with genealogies of modern population has been used. The history of the Knyazev family is inextricably linked to the history of modern village of Bernyazhka — one of the earliest settlements of the Ayalintsy (a group of the Siberian Tatars) in the territory of the Tarsky Irtysh land which became the home to the Knyazevs for more than three centuries. The 1701Inventory Revision Book cites Itkuchuk Buchkakov as a local power broker of the Ayalynsky Tatars in the village. During the 18th century, this position was inherited by his descendants who eventually lost this status in the beginning of the 19th century in the course of the managerial reforms by the Russian government. Nevertheless, the social status of the members of the gens remained high. In the mid. 19th century, the village moved — the villagers resettled from the right bank of the River Irtysh onto the left one. As the result, the village was situated nearby the main road connecting the cities of Omsk and Tara. At the same time, the village became the center of the Ayalynskay region. That led to the strengthening of the social status and property enrichment of the descendants of Itkuchuk Buchkakov. The Knyzevs’ surname first appeared in the materials of the First All-Russia Census Survey of 1897. Some of the descendants signed up under this surname later in the Soviet period. During the Soviet years, members of the Knyzev’s gens had different destinies: some worked in the local government, whereas the others were subjected to political repressions and executed. Knyazevs took part in the Great Patriotic War and seven of them perished. Presently there are no descendants of the Knyazevs in Bernyazhka as they spread over the villages of the Omskaya Region, some living in Omsk and other towns of Russia and abroad.

This article analyzes La brecha (1961) by Mercedes Valdivieso, considered the first feminist novel in Chile. From this background, it seeks to problematize the meanings of feminism embodied in the text. To achieve this purpose, first, a genealogical reading of the main events and research on the role of literary practices in the construction of feminist ideas in Chile since the twentieth century is carried out. Subsequently, through the dialogue with Los vigilantes (1994) by Diamela Eltit and Contra los hijos (2018) by Lina Meruane, the concepts of body and motherhood, pivotal themes of Valdivieso’s thought, are analyzed. Finally, some critical approaches are made on the openings and tensions of La Brecha in contrast with the emergences of recent feminist politics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
