In colonial times, mapping the New World functioned as an inherent mechanism of exerting colonial domination over Indigenous lands, enacting settler presence on these territories. While the colonial cartographies projected ownership, the non-normative mappings emerging from Aboriginal writing provide an alternative to settler Canadian geography. This article focuses on the imaginative geographies depicted in Joshua Whitehead's Jonny Appleseed (2018), which recounts the story of a young Two-Spirit man who searches for his identity in-between the reserve and the city. The objective of the analysis is to tie the representation of the contemporary queer Indigenous condition with the alternative mappings emerging from Whitehead's novel. In order to address the contemporary Two-Spirit condition in Canada, the article applies current theories proposed by the field of queer Indigenous studies, including the concept of sovereign erotic, which further allows the presentation of the potential of Two-Spirit bodies to transgress colonial cartographies. This article analyzes the representation of Hawaa (Eve) in Kenyan poet Abdilatif Abdalla's epic poem Utenzi wa Maisha ya Adamu na Hawaa [Epic of the Life of Adam and Eve]. Building on Alamin Mazrui's contention that the poem can be compared to John Milton's Paradise Lost, scholarly debate on Milton's treatment of Eve becomes a lens through which to more closely examine Abdalla's Hawaa and the larger gender implications of her role in the poem's narrative. Close reading of Abdalla's poem through this lens reveals a far less misogynistic interpretation of Hawaa than previous critics of the poem have recognized. Este artículo mira a la forma en que Jack Kerouac se ocupa del 'otro'-- exótico y de otra raza en su novela de 1958 The Subterraneans, en particular por lo que respecta a las cuestiones de género. Defiendo que aunque la novela de Kerouac se encuentra firmemente posicionada dentro del contexto estadounidense en tiempos de la Guerra Fría, se presta a lecturas postcoloniales que tienen vínculos históricos y literarios con nuestros días. Valiéndome de trabajos críticos como los de Elleke Boehmer, Trinh Minh-ha and Gareth Griffiths, en este artículo propongo lecturas de etnicidad y género que interrogan el acercamiento del narrador a lo exótico y racial en el 'otro'. Siguiendo la reproducción por parte del narrador de estereotipos étnicos, cuestiono la validez de las concepciones de 'autenticidad' en la novela. A continuación me ocupo del proceso de fetichización del cuerpo femenino en la novela, por el cual ese cuerpo exótico se convierte en el objeto de las fantasías del narrador, aun cuando al mismo tiempo éste permanece intimidado por la amenaza potencial que dicho cuerpo supone. Por último, el artículo explora las estrategias de resistencia desplegadas en la narrativa, y sugiere que esta obra de Kerouac anticipa la deconstrucción sistemática de los estereotipos de raza y género que surgirán en décadas posteriores con la poderosa emergencia de las voces étnicas y el veloz desarrollo de un entramado teórico en el campo de los estudios postcoloniales. Palabras clave: Jack Kerouac; The Subterraneans; postcolonial; raza; género; hibridismo The present article engages with Jack Kerouac's negotiations of the exotic racial other, and in particular its gendered aspects, in his 1958 novel The Subterraneans. I argue that while Kerouac's novel is firmly positioned within a Cold War American context, it can lend itself to postcolonial readings which demonstrate historical and literary continuities up to the present moment. Using the work of theorists such as Elleke Boehmer, Trinh Minh-ha and Gareth Griffiths, the article gives readings of ethnicity and gender which interrogate the narrator's approach to the exotic female other. Following the narrator's reproduction of ethnic stereotypes, I challenge the validity of conceptions of 'authenticity' in the novel. I subsequently look at the process of fetishization of the female body in the novel, as the exotic body becomes the locus upon which the narrator can project his fantasies, whilst at the same time intimidated by its menacing potential. The article finally explores the strategies of resistance that the narrative advances, suggesting that Kerouac's writing anticipates the more systematic deconstruction of racial and gender stereotypes that would be witnessed in later decades with the forceful emergence of ethnic voices and the development of a rapidly expanding theoretical corpus in the field of postcolonial studies. Transamerica, by Duncan Tucker, released in 2005, addresses lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer- (LGBTQ-) related themes through a transsexual female protagonist, Bree. This article discusses the film as an important step in the direction of representing the complexity of gender, which, by today's standards, is more generally appreciated. Because of its subject matter, Transamerica is a contentious film, lauded and condemned in mainstream media for how it dealt with and represented transsexual identities. Despite nominations for a number of awards, the film's portrayal of transsexual identities was largely ignored in academic discourse at the time. I argue here that the film provides insight into the challenges, requirements, concerns, as well as the consequences of gender-fluid expression, which has been recognised in academia for years and has become a more discussed topic in mainstream society, but the manner in which the film examines these insights was overlooked. I do this by contextualising the film in terms of contemporary examples of transgender existence, which have brought the topic to mainstream discourse, and by applying gender theory concepts to the film. I discuss the protagonist's physical and emotional journey to self-discovery in the context of the road movie trope. I then look into the protagonist's gender performance, as well as how the protagonist negotiates this performance in the various places she visits while on the journey. Within the arena of sport, as throughout society, traditional definitions of femininity and masculinity have established and maintained gender differentiation. The authors' research examines this pattern in intercollegiate athletics by analyzing National Collegiate Athletic Association media guide cover photographs. They find gender differentiation in the depiction of women and men athletes. For example, women athletes are less likely to be portrayed as active participants in sport and more likely to be portrayed in passive and traditionally feminine poses. These differences changed little between 1990 and 1997. The findings suggest that while one might expect less gender stereotyping from the teams themselves, the gendered images produced by intercollegiate athletic programs vary little from those produced by the popular press. To illustrate how media narratives can challenge normative heterosexuality, this study analyzes an episode of the television dramedy Ally McBeal in which the life and murder of a young transsexual are situated within the comedic context of Randy Newman's bitingly satirical song, 'Short People,' who, according to the lyrics, 'got no reason to live.'
