Günümüzde hemen hemen her çocuk, cinsiyet rollerinin sosyal olarak inşa edildiği bir topluma doğmakta ve bu roller bazında ayrıştırılmış bir dünyada büyümektedir. Bebeklik ve çocukluk dönemi boyunca sosyalleştirme sürecinde rol oynayan aile, arkadaş, medya gibi faktörlerin etkisiyle çocuklar, toplum tarafından belirlenen ve uyum göstermeleri beklenen cinsiyet rollerini öğrenmektedir. Bu doğrultuda cinsiyet farklılıklarına bakıldığında, kız çocukları daha baskıcı yaklaşımlarla karşılaşmakta ve onların, oğlan çocuklarına göre daha uysal, boyun eğen, uyumlu, duygularını gösteren, ilişkilere önem veren bir biçimde davranmaları istenmektedir. Öte yandan oğlan çocukları ise baskın, güçlü, bağımsız ve duygu kontrolüne sahip olarak yetiştirilmekte ve her koşulda bu doğrultuda davranmaları beklenmektedir. Bebeklikten ergenliğe bu öğretilerle sosyalleştirilen çocuklar, kendi ebeveynlerinin sergilediği cinsiyet rollerinden de güçlü bir şekilde etkilenerek, toplumsal cinsiyet rollerini içselleştirmektedir. İçselleştirilmiş bu cinsiyet rollerinin etkisi yaşam boyu sürmektedir. With the influence of factors such as family, friends, and media, which play a role in the socialization process during infancy and childhood, children learn about gender roles determined by the society. In this context, from the perspective of gender differences, girls face more oppressive approaches and are expected to behave submissively, be more easy going, complier, relational, and show their emotions more deeply compared to their male peers. On the other hand, boys are rared as strong, independent, less emotional, and they are expected to behave in this way under all circumstances. Children who are socialized with these teachings from infancy to adolescence are also strongly influenced by the gender roles displayed by their parents and ultimately internalize those gender roles which has a lifetime effect on them. It is known that gender stereotypes cause pressure and stress on both women and men both concurrently and in the long-run, and the need to adapt to the gender-based expectations of the society adversely affects their psychological health. Although social consciousness about gender equality has increased in recent years, it is known that gender inequality still continues in many countries. As a result, psychology of gender affects each individual at every stage of their lives, as stated consistently in the related literature, which clearly demonstrates the importance of policies for gender equality.

Sex and gender are key to people’s lives, and are the focus of scientific and popular interest and controversy. Sex-related psychological characteristics reflect more than socialization; they are influenced by sex hormones present during sensitive periods of development, particularly androgens that are present prenatally. Studies of females with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) show how prenatal androgens affect behavior across the life span; these hormones have large effects on interest and engagement in gendered activities, moderate effects on spatial abilities, and relatively small (or no) effects on gender identity, gender cognitions, and gendered peer involvement. In addition to showing the complexity of androgens’ effects on gendered behavior, studies of females with CAH provide an opportunity to test theories of gender development, gain insight into how nature and nurture work together, and examine mechanisms of development. The implications of this work have often been misunderstood, so we consider what it means—and does not mean—for biology to influence gender-related behavior.

Funding bodies in Western societies increasingly require researchers to address gender in their proposals – though often exclusively framed around binary notions. With oppressive power structures being prevalent and persuasive, these seep into current practices of Computer Science and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research. However, current curricula rarely provide actors in this space with grounded guidance on gender issues tied to their inquiries. Hence, developing an increased awareness of our societal responsibility towards equity can be challenging without an appropriate starting point. Drawing on a close reading of select literature discussing gender sensitivity in HCI research, we derived practical guidance in the form of recommendations for the design, proposal, conduct and presentation of research. Based on these recommendations, we then present the design of a card deck and initial tests thereof at ditact women’s IT summer university. Our analysis offers a starting point for HCI students and interested researchers to explore questions and issues around gender and to identify how gender relates to their research. This sensitisation may aid them in further reflecting on how they might better account for gendered implications of their work.

The study assessed how smallholder vegetable farmers are linked to formal markets in Lagos state, Nigeria. The study specifically described the socioeconomic characteristics of the smallholder vegetable farmers, ascertained perceived benefits from the linkage and constraints in linking smallholder vegetable farmers to formal markets. A random sampling technique was used to sample 120 vegetable farmers from Agbowa and Epe clusters. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. The results revealed that smallholder vegetable farmers were relatively young with mean age of 41.5 years, mean household size was 4 persons and they mainly sourced information from friends and fellow farmers. The findings also revealed that the smallholder vegetable farmers had strong linkage with input suppliers (x̅ = 2.50), International Fertilizer Development Center (x̅ = 2.33), World Vegetable Center (x̅ = 1.51) and Center for Inclusive Agriculture and Gender Development (x̅ = 1.46). Exposure to production technologies and specialized training (x̅ = 4.69) were the most perceived benefits from the linkage. Level of linkage with farmers and other actors was constrained by lack of basic infrastructure (x̅ = 2.50) and inadequate credit facilities (x̅ = 2.06). The study also found a significant correlation between household size and level of linkages. The linkages arising from the arrangement had no doubt exposed the farmers to production technologies and market information. Extension agencies and relevant non-governmental organisations are implored to offer specific trainings to vegetable farmers on value addition to enhance their participation in the formal markets.

Women in developing and developed countries can still suffer from constraints on their ability to exercise their reproductive rights, being subject to gendered norms and forms of control over their bodies and encountering various difficulties to accessing healthcare services. Sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) thus continue to matter for the advancement of gender equality, whilst communications when strategically used can shape support for progressive policies. This project seeks to advance research on gender development and advocacy communications for social change. A core question asked here is how can communications be better used for advocacy on SRHR? Making use of a mixed methods approach, this research engages with a sample of 52 feminist and health NGOs, located in both the North and the South. In depth interviews with gender experts from the organizations were combined with a survey applied to the communication professionals, followed by content and discourse analysis of their institutional websites and social media engagement. This paper provides a condensed examination of early research findings and of core theoretical frameworks, arguing over the need to deconstruct discourses around SRHR under challenging times and concluding that NGOs need better communication strategies and practices in their advocacy communication efforts.

Among all the marginalized and stigmatized communities in Odisha, financial exclusion is high among the transgender community. This study discusses the status, importance and key challenges of financial inclusion among the transgender community of Odisha. This study tries to address the major constraints and challenges of financial inclusion among transgender community people in Odisha. To fulfil the above cited objective, in-depth interviews were conducted with 76 respondents. Additionally, the interviews were also taken from the transgender community’s president and secretary from two regions of Odisha (Cuttack and Bhubaneswar). This study points out that transgender people are deprived from accessing adequate financial products and services from the formal financial institutions. Both demand side and supply side factors are responsible for this exclusion. On the demand side, their low financial literacy and awareness, lack of proper documents to open a bank account, lack of individual interest and lack of formal employment are responsible. On the other hand, supply side factors involve unfriendly behaviour of bank staff and officers, less provision of legal documents from the government, less spread of information, less awareness programmes or financial literacy programmes among the transgender community of Odisha.

Gender nonconformity (femininity in males, masculinity in females) is more common in non-heterosexual (bisexual and homosexual) than heterosexual individuals. In the past research (Watts, Holmes, Raines, Orbell, & Rieger, 2018b), identical twins discordant for sexual orientation were perceived more similar in their gender nonconformity than unrelated heterosexual and non-heterosexual people. Yet, these perceptions were based on photographs, which do not contain all aspects of gender nonconformity, such as movement and sound. This could have led to an underestimation of observable difference within twin pairs. We examined evaluations of video recordings from adult identical twins with discordant sexual orientations (eight male pairs, 11 female pairs). These twins were a small subset of those who participated in Watts et al. (2018b). Non-heterosexual twins were rated as significantly more gender nonconforming than their heterosexual co-twins, but only when males and females were combined. Their difference was smaller than the analogous difference between identical twins who were concordant heterosexual (three male pairs, three female pairs) and, unrelated to them, identical twins who were concordant non-heterosexual (six male pairs, two female pairs). These patterns were partially confirmed with twins' self-reported gender nonconformity. Shared influences possibly made twins from discordant pairs somewhat similar in their gender nonconformity, even if non-shared factors differentiated their sexual orientations.

Previous research suggested that gender typicality and pressure to conform to gender norms were unrelated; however, this may have been due to how gender typicality was assessed (i.e., by only comparing the self to one’s own gender collective). In the present study, we used a dual identity approach (comparing oneself to both gender collectives: to own-gender and other-gender individuals) to create typologies of gender typicality to examine how similarity to own and other gender collectives might differentially associate with pressure to conform to gender norms. The potentially unique influence of pressure sources (parents, peers, or the self) was also analyzed. Participants were 378 U.S. 6th grade students (48% female; Mage = 11.44 years, range = 10–13). Results indicated that male early adolescents felt more pressure than did female early adolescents and that those who felt more similar to own-gender (and less similar to other-gender) felt significantly higher levels of pressure and that the highest source of pressure was the self rather than peers or parents. We discuss how the present research provides insights into who experiences the highest levels of felt pressure to conform to gender norms and suggests that self-socialization plays a strong role in gender development for many early adolescents.

This study examines the links between parents’ religiosity, the way parents implicitly talk about gender with their preschoolers, and children's gender attitudes and preferences. Additionally, we focused on the degree to which parents’ gender talk mediates the relation between religiosity and children's gender attitudes and preferences. In a sample of 134 families (81 in which at least 1 parent was Christian) with a child aged 4-6 years, we observed both parents’ gender talk while discussing the Gender Stereotypes Picture Book with their child. Fathers and mothers filled out a questionnaire to examine the importance of religion in their daily life and children were interviewed about their gender stereotypical attitudes and personal preferences for gender-typed occupations. Our study revealed that when parents are more religious, their children have more stereotypical gender attitudes. Although we found no significant mediation, we did find evidence for a specific role of (religious) fathers when it comes to communicating gender messages. That is, parents’ level of religiosity was positively related to fathers’, but not to mothers’ gender talk. Additionally, only fathers’ gender talk was positively associated with their children's gender attitudes. Our results illustrate the unique role fathers can play in children's gender development.

A regional adaptation of the Gender Development Index (GDI) to the sub-national level is proposed. The purpose of the article is to show the regional differences in composite GDI indicators and gender differences in these indicators. GDI covers the areas of longevity, knowledge and a decent standard of living. The indicators of the dimensions “Long and healthy life” and “Standard of living” were taken from the UN methodology for calculating the regional GDI, and the indicator of the dimension of “Knowledge” was replaced by a more informative one in the national context.The regional variations in GDI indicators showed that the situation in the regions of Ukraine in the dimensions of “Knowledge” and “Standard of living” was significantly different, whereas “Long and healthy life” indicators differed, but not critically. Gender differences in the indicators show the following for all regions: all the indicators of the dimensions of “Knowledge” and “Long and healthy life” reflect some significant gender asymmetry towards women, and the indicators of the dimension of “Standard of living” reflect the significant asymmetry towards men. Nevertheless, despite this gender asymmetry of GDI indicators, in all the regions of Ukraine GDI is close to unity, which means that it reflects gender parity in human development of men and women. The human development indicators for men and women show significant regional variations. We can single out the situation in the city of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, where almost all the indicators in all the areas differ from the other regions. The article also analyzes the regions with low indicators and significant gender gaps, as the low indicators of dimensions determine the low value of human development, and gender differences in indicators affect the value of the overall indicator of gender development. Testing of the proposed methodology for adapting the GDI to the sub-national level will make it possible to clarify its indicators for each region and, as a result, to prepare sound political, economic and social recommendations in the human development context taking into account the gender factor.

Increasing numbers of gender-nonconforming children are socially transitioning—changing pronouns to live as their identified genders. We studied a cohort of gender-nonconforming children ( n = 85) and contacted them again approximately 2 years later. When recontacted, 36 of the children had socially transitioned. We found that stronger cross-sex identification and preferences expressed by gender-nonconforming children at initial testing predicted whether they later socially transitioned. We then compared the gender-nonconforming children with groups of transitioned transgender children ( n = 84) and gender-conforming controls ( n = 85). Children from our longitudinal cohort who would later transition were highly similar to transgender children (children who had already socially transitioned) and to control children of the gender to which they would eventually transition. Gender-nonconforming children who would not go on to transition were different from these groups. These results suggest that (a) social transitions may be predictable from gender identification and preferences and (b) gender identification and preferences may not meaningfully differ before and after social transitions.

Princess culture is criticized for contributing to gender stereotypes and poor body esteem, however, there is little longitudinal research examining these claims. This study examines associations between engagement with princess culture during early childhood and gender stereotypes, body esteem, and adherence to hegemonic masculinity in early adolescence. Participants included 307 children (51% female, Mage = 4.83 years, 87% White) who completed questionnaires at two time points, 5 years apart. The results indicated that early engagement with princess culture was not associated with later adherence to female gender stereotypes. However, princess engagement was associated with lower adherence to norms of hegemonic masculinity and higher body esteem. Socioeconomic status and gender moderated the results. Effect sizes were small to moderate. The changing nature of Disney princesses is discussed in the context of gender development across childhood.

The lack of an accepted theory of psychological androgyny has been the seeds for its de-construction. Over the decades, the testing of ideas associated with androgyny has declined. Indeed the debates over its usefulness as a construct ended long ago. The judgment nowadays is that debating the constructs of masculinity, femininity, and androgyny as behavioural traits has been long settled, and a contemporary revisiting of androgyny is not warranted. However, from another contemporary viewpoint, if androgyny is to have any future, it needs a new theory devoid of masculinity and femininity. This article details a new de-gendered theory of psychological androgyny, neo-androgyny, as a candidate to replace traditional models that are now considered outdated and irrelevant. We present five potential factors for inclusion in a de-gendered model: Social Efficacy, Creativity, Capability, Eminence, and Determination. We review these factors concerning the future of androgyny theory.

Gender is a core components of a child’s identity. But in deciding whether or not to paint the new nursery pink or blue, are parents responding to a child’s gender or helping to shape it? Science reveals that gender-based behavior is influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors that include a parent’s subtle or not so subtle signals of what is means to be male or female. New research is also beginning to surface that suggests that early parental support for transgender children may prevent some of the emotional turmoil that might otherwise occur. How children develop their sense of gender identity and how parents can support and facilitate this process without excessive influence is the focus of this chapter.

The article provides a historical analysis of the development of relations between Kazakhstan and the OIC. The Organization of Islamic Cooperation unites Muslim countries and aims to increase its authority and influence in the modern world. Today the Islamic world is aware of its lagging behind the indicators of the Western community in the economic, cultural, and civilizational dimension. Despite the fact that all OIC states are members of the UN, their internal policies are criticized on many issues. In particular, this concerns human rights, gender equality, and discrimination against women. Kazakhstan is a secular state in which dozens of confessions peacefully coexist and women enjoy equal rights with men. Therefore, having joined the OIC, our country began to pay great attention to human rights and gender aspects. In a sense, we can say that thanks to the efforts of the Republic of Kazakhstan, positive changes began to occur in the gender development of the OIC member countries. The increased authority and influence of Kazakhstan was appreciated by the members of the organization, who elected him to the post of chairman in 2011. When children are born, they are typically assigned a sex, male or female, based on the appearance of external genitalia. The gender of the newborn is assumed based on the assigned sex. Researchers debate the origins of gender and whether gender is largely biologically based or socially constructed. Sociologists tend to argue that children learn about their gender from their parents and experiences at school through a process known as gender role socialization, whereas medical discourses argue that one’s gender should be aligned with one’s assigned sex. Schools are one of the first sites outside the home where researchers have studied the way gender nonconforming and trans children and youth face discrimination and harassment. Education research about trans youth documents the need for trans youth to have a voice in school policies and practices. Trans adults offer a wide range of theories about gender and critique traditional models of gender for their failure to capture the complexity, fluidity, and diversity of gender experiences and identities. Trans youth have yet to enter these conversations and their gender, access to treatment and services, and rights are often determined by medical discourses about gender and gender identity development. In the 21st century, the parents and families of trans youth are beginning to play an important role in advocating for and supporting the needs of their trans child. Trans identity development models are shaped by theories about gender and are often designed as a stage model. In 2004, Aaron Devor created the first trans identity development model based on the CASS model that Viviane Cass developed in 1979. Scholars have critiqued these models for their rigid conceptualization of gender, the linear structure of stages in these models, and the lack of recognition of the role race, class, disability, and sexuality have in the complexity of gender. Scholars have also remarked on the way these models were developed for trans adults and fail to conceptualize trans youth. Theories about gender and gender identity development have shaped gender models used in the treatment of gender nonconforming children. The gender affirmative model takes a progressive approach to this treatment, allowing children and youth to be experts on their gender and to be supported in socially transitioning at any age. Research about gender and gender identity development among trans youth in North America is increasingly recognizing the need to center the voices and needs of young trans people.

The last 45 years of gender research into the benefits of psychological androgyny have resulted in a mélange of results and the benefits of androgyny did not clearly emerge, if at all. The paucity of research on the androgyny hypothesis since the 1980’s would seem to confirm it became outdated. This raises the question did ambiguity surrounding gender and behavior bring the debate to an end? One is now required to ask whether or not the construct of androgyny as some mystical combination of masculine and feminine characteristics is any longer theoretically defensible, and could the study of sex and gender be challenged to offer a new theoretical framework from which a valid and robust concept of androgyny may be derived, and from which the androgyny hypothesis may be re-examined.

Gender-based human development alludes to improving the quality of life for men and women. Ideally, increasing gender development will create a balance of empowerment between men and women. Gender justice is a process ensuring the fair treatment of women and men alike and removing role-making, double burden, subordination, marginalization, and violence against women by men. Indonesia’s gender-based human development is characterized by the absence of discrimination between women and men in gaining access, opportunity to participate, and control over development and obtaining equal and equitable benefits from Development. How trans youth realize about their gender identity and come out to their significant others is under-researched and very few studies include both youth and parental perspectives. This study was developed in Switzerland, a country where families with trans youth are just beginning to break invisibility. The research protocol draws on grounded theory methodology, is participative and developed in collaboration with a local trans NGO and a pan Canadian project. We conducted 20 semi-structured interviews with 10 trans youth and their caregivers/parents (10 interview). At least three developmental pathways seem to emerge: a) the affirmed children who affirm themselves very early, (b) the silent children who spend their childhood in a state of internal tension without being able to position themselves and (c) the neutral children who become aware of their gender difference at puberty following a childhood in which gender was not problematic. In all cases puberty is a crossroads, lived painfully with significant manifestations of both social and body dysphoria. A better understanding of the process of gender development in trans children and youth will help improve our interventions to better serve young people and their families, and help them overcome the different levels of oppressions they face.

In this critical, feminist account of the management of intersex conditions under 2006's controversial “Disorders of Sex Development” (DSD) treatment model, I argue that like the “Optimal Gender of Rearing” (OGR) treatment model it replaced, DSD aims at securing a cisgendered future for the intersex patient, referring to a normalized trajectory of development across the lifespan in which multiple sexed, gendered, and sexual characteristics remain in “coherent” alignment. I argue this by critically analyzing two ways that intersex management has changed between OGR and DSD: 1) regarding sex‐assignment recommendations for three patient populations and, 2) with the prenatal treatment of pregnant individuals at risk of conceiving a fetus with congenital adrenal hyperplasia with the steroid hormone dexamethasone. I conclude that like OGR before it, DSD also unjustifiably presumes that typical genitalia are necessary for cisgendered development. However, unlike OGR, it appeals to the empirically inadequate, theoretically suspect, and biologically determinist model of gender development known as brain‐organization theory. Given this, I conclude that the treatment of intersex people under DSD continues to be driven by problematically heterosexist and transphobic assumptions regarding the value and normalcy of cisgendered life, while practically and discursively constituting it as such.

Irving Gottesman is known primarily for his work in psychopathology, but he also had a long-standing interest in understanding psychological development generally (typical and atypical). Through his mentorship, he also influenced work in gender development. Characteristics related to sex and gender are ideally suited to study the interplay of genes and environment across development. We discuss how gender development is influenced by gonadal hormones present during early life, but not in a simple way. We describe some of the challenges and opportunities to extend our understanding of the complexity of gender development. Throughout, we consider the kinds of questions Gottesman would likely have asked and emphasize his influence on our work.

This study examined how maternal acceptance, care, and overprotection, along with individuals’ feminine gender orientation, impacted anxiety and adjustment among emerging adults. Data were collected via survey packets from 106 college undergraduates at a university in New England and analyzed using multiple regression models. Results indicated that maternal acceptance predicted better psychological adjustment above and beyond the influence of other parenting characteristics and gender role ideology; participants who felt accepted by their mothers growing up were more likely to have positive adjustment. However, with respect to anxiety, results suggested that having a more feminine gender role orientation was more strongly related to increased anxiety than maternal care, overprotection, and acceptance. These findings contribute to the understanding of unique factors that may serve as risk or resilience factors in the psychological well-being of young adults.

Recent literature has stressed the need for research examining the causes of females in general having lower levels of financial literacy than males. This paper uses social cognitive theory of gender development as a framework to propose differing financial socialisation of children in the home by gender as a possible cause of gender differences later in life. Evidence is found of gender based differences in the financial socialisation of eleven to fourteen year olds. Findings include more frequent parent-child discussions being correlated to more positive financial attitudes, but not to saving behaviour. Saving behaviour of children is influenced by attitudes to money along with the presence of parents when spending, which is subject to a same sex gender bias for girls, with large effect sizes. Girls are over 200% more likely to state they save some of their pocket money if their mother is present when they spend their pocket money, compared to having no parent present. This difference does not exist for male children. When a boy is with both parents when spending, they are 245% more likely to report saving some of their pocket money then when neither parent is present. Having a father present when spending does not yield significantly different results to when no parent is present. These findings of gender biased financial socialisation in the home are important considerations for the design of school-based financial literacy programmes. Specifically, these programmes should consider a goal of encouraging discussion and questioning gender based attitudes and roles in the home. They are also important findings in terms of going some way to explaining the existence of a gender difference in financial knowledge in adulthood.
