Abstract

Large Language Models still struggle in challenging scenarios that leverage structured data, complex reasoning, or tool usage. In this paper, we propose Source2Synth: a new method that can be used for teaching LLMs new skills without relying on costly human annotations. Source2Synth takes as input a custom data source and produces synthetic data points with intermediate reasoning steps grounded in real-world sources. Source2Synth improves the dataset quality by discarding low-quality generations based on their answerability. We demonstrate the generality of this approach by applying it to two challenging domains: we test reasoning abilities in multi-hop question answering (MHQA), and tool usage in tabular question answering (TQA). Our method improves performance by 25.51% for TQA on WikiSQL and 22.57% for MHQA on HotPotQA compared to the fine-tuned baselines.

3. Assessment of COVID-19 Messaging Strategies to Increase Testing for Students with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Abstract

Background: Students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) were disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This study's goal was to assess the effectiveness of 2 messaging strategies on participation in SARS-CoV-2 weekly testing. Methods: Cluster randomized trials were conducted at 2 school systems, the special school district (SSD) and Kennedy Krieger Institute (Kennedy) to assess messaging strategies, general versus enhanced, to increase weekly screening for SARS-CoV-2. Testing was offered to staff and students from November 23, 2020 to May 26, 2022. The primary outcomes were percentage of students and staff consented weekly and percentage of study participants who had a test performed weekly. Generalized estimating equation models were utilized to evaluate the primary outcomes. Results: Increases in enrollment and testing occurred during study start up, the beginning of school years, and following surges in both systems. No statistical difference was observed in the primary outcomes between schools receiving standard versus enhanced messaging. Implications for School Health Policy, Practice, and Equity: Frequent and consistent communication is vital for families and staff. Weekly screening testing within schools is possible and highlighted the importance of utilizing equitable protocols to provide important testing to students with IDD. Conclusion: Enhanced messaging strategies did not increase the number of participants enrolled or the percentage of enrolled participants being tested on a weekly basis. 4. Ups and downs: Copepods reverse the near-body flow to cruise in the water column

Abstract

Copepods participate in large-scale diel vertical migrations (DVM) as primary consumers in marine ecosystems. Given that they are negatively buoyant, gravity facilitates their downward cruising but impedes their upward relocation. In principle, overcoming this retarding force using drag-based propulsion during upward swimming incurs extra energy costs that neutrally buoyant or gravity-assisted downward swimmers fundamentally avoid. This added power requirement seemingly renders upward swimming disproportionally less efficient than downward swimming. However, we found a compensatory mechanism enhancing thrust in upward-swimming copepods. Using experimentally derived velocity and pressure fields, we observed that copepods pull water to the anterior, generating sub-ambient pressure gradients when cruising upwards, thereby inducing an upstream suction force to complement the thrust produced by the legs. Contrary to expectations that drag forces always dominate the leg recovery phase, the results show that the upstream suction generates net thrust for about a third of the recovery stroke. Such a suction-thrust mechanism promotes cost-effective swimming in larger animals like fish and jellyfish. However, it has never been reported at small scales. We compare these results with downward-swimming copepods that push rather than pull on water and demonstrate they do not benefit from thrust-enhancing suction effects during the recovery stroke. Instead, downward cruisers leverage gravitational effects to swim faster. `Puller' and `pusher' behaviors are driven by alterations of the leg kinematics, indicating a response to the body orientation rather than a fixed organism trait. These results offer insights into an essential swimming mechanism that can inform us about the role of mesozooplankton in driving biogenic hydrodynamic transport and its effects on marine biogeochemistry.

5. Single-frame transmission and phase imaging using off-axis holography with undetected photons

Abstract

Imaging with undetected photons relies upon nonlinear interferometry to extract the spatial image from an infrared probe beam and reveal it in the interference pattern of an easier-to-detect visible beam. Typically, the transmission and phase images are extracted using phase-shifting techniques and combining interferograms from multiple frames. Here we show that off-axis digital holography enables reconstruction of both transmission and phase images at the infrared wavelength from a single interferogram, and hence a single frame, recorded in the visible. This eliminates the need for phase stepping and multiple acquisitions, thereby greatly reducing total measurement time for imaging with long acquisition times at low flux or enabling video-rate imaging at higher flux. With this single-frame acquisition technique, we are able to reconstruct transmission images of an object in the infrared beam with a signal-to-noise ratio of $1.78\,\pm\,0.06$ at 10 frames per second, and record a dynamic scene in the infrared beam at 33 frames per second., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, references added to page 1

Abstract

We present the second version of the Open Assistant Toolkit (OAT-v2), an open-source task-oriented conversational system for composing generative neural models. OAT-v2 is a scalable and flexible assistant platform supporting multiple domains and modalities of user interaction. It splits processing a user utterance into modular system components, including submodules such as action code generation, multimodal content retrieval, and knowledge-augmented response generation. Developed over multiple years of the Alexa TaskBot challenge, OAT-v2 is a proven system that enables scalable and robust experimentation in experimental and real-world deployment. OAT-v2 provides open models and software for research and commercial applications to enable the future of multimodal virtual assistants across diverse applications and types of rich interaction.

Abstract

We tackle the challenge of building real-world multimodal assistants for complex real-world tasks. We describe the practicalities and challenges of developing and deploying GRILLBot, a leading (first and second prize winning in 2022 and 2023) system deployed in the Alexa Prize TaskBot Challenge. Building on our Open Assistant Toolkit (OAT) framework, we propose a hybrid architecture that leverages Large Language Models (LLMs) and specialised models tuned for specific subtasks requiring very low latency. OAT allows us to define when, how and which LLMs should be used in a structured and deployable manner. For knowledge-grounded question answering and live task adaptations, we show that LLM reasoning abilities over task context and world knowledge outweigh latency concerns. For dialogue state management, we implement a code generation approach and show that specialised smaller models have 84% effectiveness with 100x lower latency. Overall, we provide insights and discuss tradeoffs for deploying both traditional models and LLMs to users in complex real-world multimodal environments in the Alexa TaskBot challenge. Abstract

The effect known as ``induced coherence without induced emission'' has spawned a field dedicated to imaging with undetected photons (IUP), where photons from two distinct photon-pair sources interfere if their outputs are made indistinguishable. The indistinguishability is commonly achieved in two setups. Induced coherence IUP (IC-IUP) has only the idler photons from the first source passing through the second, whilst nonlinear interferometry (NI-IUP) has both signal and idler photons from the first source passing through the second and can be simpler to implement. In both cases, changes in the idler path between sources can be detected by measuring the interference fringes in the signal path in a way that allows image information to be moved between different wavelengths. Here we model and implement a novel setup that uses a polarization state quantum eraser approach to move continuously between IC-IUP and NI-IUP operation. We find excellent agreement between experiment and theory in the low-gain or quantum regime. The system also provides a new route for optimizing IUP interference by using controllable quantum erasure to balance the interferometer.

10. Dissipative Dark Substructure: The Consequences of Atomic Dark Matter on Milky Way Analog Subhalos

Abstract

Using cosmological hydrodynamical zoom-in simulations, we explore the properties of subhalos in Milky Way analogs that contain a sub-component of Atomic Dark Matter (ADM). ADM differs from Cold Dark Matter (CDM) due to the presence of self interactions that lead to energy dissipation and bound-state formation, analogous to Standard Model baryons. This model can arise in complex dark sectors that are natural and theoretically-motivated extensions to the Standard Model. The simulations used in this work were carried out using GIZMO and utilize the FIRE-2 galaxy formation physics in the Standard Model baryonic sector. For the parameter points we consider, the ADM gas cools efficiently, allowing it to collapse to the center of subhalos. This increases a subhalo's central density and affects its orbit, with more subhalos surviving small pericentric passages. The subset of subhalos that host visible satellite galaxies have cuspier density profiles and smaller stellar-half-mass radii relative to CDM. The entire population of dwarf galaxies produced in the ADM simulations is much more compact than those seen in CDM simulations, unable to reproduce the entire diversity of observed dwarf galaxy structures. Additionally, we also identify a population of highly compact subhalos that consist nearly entirely of ADM and form in the central region of the host, where they can leave distinctive imprints in the baryonic disk. This work presents the first detailed exploration of subhalo properties in a strongly dissipative dark matter scenario, providing intuition for how other regions of ADM parameter space, as well as other dark sector models, would impact galactic-scale observables., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, 8 pages of appendices

11. Dark Sector Glueballs at the LHC

Abstract

We study confining dark sectors where the lightest hadrons are glueballs. Such models can provide viable dark matter candidates and appear in some neutral naturalness scenarios. In this work, we introduce a new phenomenological model of dark glueball hadronization inspired by the Lund string model. This enables us to make realistic predictions for dark glueball phenomenology at the LHC for the first time. Our model reproduces the expected thermal distribution of hadron species as an emergent consequence of hadronization dynamics. The ability to predict the production of glueball states heavier than the lightest species significantly expands the reach of long-lived glueball searches in MATHUSLA compared to previous simplified estimates. Abstract

Abstract Background Invasive management strategies range from preventing new invasive species incursions to eliminating established populations, with all requiring effective monitoring to guide action. The use of DNA sampled from the environment (eDNA) is one such tool that provides the ability to surveille and monitor target invasive species through passive sampling. Technology being developed to eliminate invasive species includes genetic biocontrol in the form of gene drive. This approach would drive a trait through a population and could be used to eliminate or modify a target population. Once a gene drive organism is released into a population then monitoring changes in density of the target species and the spread of the drive in the population would be critical. Results In this paper, we use invasive Mus musculus as a model for development of an eDNA assay that detects wild-type M. musculus and gene drive M. musculus. We demonstrate successful development of an assay where environmental samples could be used to detect wild-type invasive M. musculus and the relative density of wild-type to gene drive M. musculus. Conclusions The development of a method that detects both wild-type M. musculus and a gene drive M. musculus (t CRISPR) from environmental samples expands the utility of environmental DNA. This method provides a tool that can immediately be deployed for invasive wild M. musculus management across the world. This is a proof-of-concept that a genetic biocontrol construct could be monitored using environmental samples.

13. Hydromechanical properties of metachronal swimming in polychaetes

Abstract

Abstract Free-swimming polychaetes are common in marine habitats and exhibit a unique form of swimming whereby a metachronal wave occurs simultaneously with a bending body wave. This body wave is unusual among swimming animals because it travels in the same direction as the animal’s swimming direction. However, we currently lack a mechanistic understanding of this unusual form of locomotion. In this study we use a combination of high-speed, high-resolution video and particle image velocimetry (PIV) to quantify kinematics and fluid dynamics for three species of swimming polychaetes, spanning two orders of magnitude in size. We find that in all species, flows generated by metachronal waves of parapodia dominate while typical flows associated with body bending is absent. However, the parapodia are less flexible than propulsive structures in other metachronal swimmers. This creates a localized, but substantial upstream flow during the recovery stroke. Using body bending, the recovery stroke can occur mostly beneath the bulk flow from the power strokes, resulting in minimal inference while the subsequent power stroke can benefit from the pressure field generated during recovery. These results may have implications for future vehicle designs that incorporate metachronal locomotion.

Abstract

Infrared (IR) imaging is invaluable across many scientific disciplines, from material analysis to diagnostic medicine. However, applications are often limited by detector cost, resolution and sensitivity, noise caused by the thermal IR background, and the cost, portability and tunability of infrared sources. Here, we describe a compact, portable, and low-cost system that is able to image objects at IR wavelengths without an IR source or IR detector. This imaging with undetected photons (IUP) approach uses quantum interference and correlations between entangled photon pairs to transfer image information from the IR to the visible, where it can be detected with a standard silicon camera. We also demonstrate a rapid analysis approach to acquire both phase and transmission image information. 22. Generate, Transform, Answer: Question Specific Tool Synthesis for Tabular Data

Abstract

Tabular question answering (TQA) presents a challenging setting for neural systems by requiring joint reasoning of natural language with large amounts of semi-structured data. Unlike humans who use programmatic tools like filters to transform data before processing, language models in TQA process tables directly, resulting in information loss as table size increases. In this paper we propose ToolWriter to generate query specific programs and detect when to apply them to transform tables and align them with the TQA model's capabilities. Focusing ToolWriter to generate row-filtering tools improves the state-of-the-art for WikiTableQuestions and WikiSQL with the most performance gained on long tables. By investigating headroom, our work highlights the broader potential for programmatic tools combined with neural components to manipulate large amounts of structured data.

Spectroscopy and imaging in the mid-infrared (2.5 $\mu$m $\sim$ $\lambda$ $\sim$ 25 $\mu$m) is bedevilled by the presence of a strong 300 K thermal background at room temperature that makes IR detectors decades noisier than can be readily achieved in the visible. The technique of "imaging with undetected photons" (IUP) exploits the quantum correlations between entangled photon pairs to transfer image information from one spectral region to another, and here we show that it does so in a way that is immune to the thermal background. This means that IUP can be used to perform high speed photon counting measurements across the mid-IR, using uncooled visible detectors that are many times cheaper, faster, and more sensitive than their IR counterparts., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Abstract To accurately define the role of the gut microbiota in health and disease pathogenesis, the preservation of stool sample integrity, in terms of microbial community composition and metabolic function, is critical. This presents a challenge for any studies which rely on participants self-collecting and returning stool samples as this introduces variability and uncertainty of sample storage/handling. Here, we tested the performance of three stool sample collection/preservation buffers when storing human stool samples at different temperatures (room temperature [20 °C], 4 °C and – 80 °C) for up to three days. We compared and quantified differences in 16S rRNA sequencing composition and short-chain fatty acid profiles compared against immediately snap-frozen stool. We found that the choice of preservation buffer had the largest effect on the resulting microbial community and metabolomic profiles. Collectively analysis confirmed that PSP and RNAlater buffered samples most closely recapitulated the microbial diversity profile of the original (immediately – 80 °C frozen) sample and should be prioritised for human stool microbiome studies.

26. Estimating regional and national cancer incidence in Uganda: a retrospective population-based study, 2013–2017

Abstract

Abstract Background Cancer is becoming a major health problem in Uganda. Cancer control requires accurate estimates of the cancer burden for planning and monitoring of the cancer control strategies. However, cancer estimates and trends for Uganda are mainly based on one population-based cancer registry (PBCR), located in Kampala, the capital city, due to a lack of PBCRs in other regions. This study aimed at estimating cancer incidence among the geographical regions and providing national estimates of cancer incidence in Uganda. Methods A retrospective study, using a catchment population approach, was conducted from June 2019 to February 2020. The study registered all newly diagnosed cancer cases, in the period of 2013 to 2017, among three geographical regions: Central, Western and Eastern regions. Utilizing regions as strata, stratified random sampling was used to select the study populations. Cases were coded according to the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-0-03). Data was analysed using CanReg5 and Microsoft Excel. Results 11598 cases (5157 males and 6441 females) were recorded. The overall national age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR) were 82.9 and 87.4 per 100,000 people in males and females respectively. The regional ASIRs were: 125.4 per 100,000 in males and 134.6 per 100,000 in females in central region; 58.2 per 100,000 in males and 56.5 per 100,000 in females in Western region; and 46.5 per 100,000 in males and 53.7 per 100,000 in females in Eastern region. Overall, the most common cancers in males over the study period were cancers of the prostate, oesophagus, Kaposi’s sarcoma, stomach and liver. In females, the most frequent cancers were: cervix, breast, oesophagus, Kaposi’s sarcoma and stomach. Conclusion The overall cancer incidence rates from this study are different from the documented national estimates for Uganda. This emphasises the need to enhance the current methodologies for describing the country’s cancer burden. Studies like this one are critical in enhancing the cancer surveillance system by estimating regional and national cancer incidence and allowing for the planning and monitoring of evidence-based cancer control strategies at all levels.

Abstract

Imaging with undetected photons (IUP) enables the possibility of sensing changes in the phase and the transmission of a beam of light that need never be detected. This has led to the possibility of infrared sensing with visible silicon camera technology, for example. Relying on the interference of two identical pairs of photons, IUP was initially achieved using unidirectional paths through two nonlinear crystal pair sources. More recently, folded arrangements using bidirectional paths through a single-crystal have become common for their simplicity. Here, we theoretically model and experimentally implement a novel setup involving three interference paths through a single nonlinear crystal. This establishes two independent IUP sensing modes in addition to a third linear interference mode. We achieve this using a polarization state quantum eraser approach, with excellent agreement between experiment and theory. This system provides a new route to control and optimize IUP interference in a single-crystal folded arrangement by using controllable quantum erasure to balance the interferometer, opening the door to new implementations and applications for IUP.

Abstract

The interactions of individuals with city neighbourhoods is determined, in part, by the perceived quality of urban environments. Perceived neighbourhood quality is a core component of urban vitality, influencing social cohesion, sense of community, safety, activity and mental health of residents. Large-scale assessment of perceptions of neighbourhood quality was pioneered by the Place Pulse projects. Researchers demonstrated the efficacy of crowd-sourcing perception ratings of image pairs across 56 cities and training a model to predict perceptions from street-view images. Variation across cities may limit Place Pulse's usefulness for assessing within-city perceptions. In this paper, we set forth a protocol for city-specific dataset collection for the perception: 'On which street would you prefer to walk?'. This paper describes our methodology, based in London, including collection of images and ratings, web development, model training and mapping. Assessment of within-city perceptions of neighbourhoods can identify inequities, inform planning priorities, and identify temporal dynamics. 32. Indirect Detection of Dark Matter Annihilating into Dark Glueballs

Abstract

We examine indirect detection of dark matter that annihilates into dark glueballs, which in turn decay into the Standard Model via a range of portals. This arises if the dark matter candidate couples to a confining gauge force without light flavours, representative of many possible complex dark sectors. Such Hidden Valley scenarios are being increasingly considered due to non-detection of minimal models as well as theoretical motivations such as the Twin Higgs solution to the little hierarchy problem. Study of dark glueballs in indirect detection has previously been hampered by the difficulty of modeling their production in dark showers. We use the recent GlueShower code to produce the first constraints on dark matter annihilating via dark glueballs into the Standard Model across photon, antiproton, and positron channels. We also fit the Galactic Centre Excess and use this observation, combined with other astrophysical constraints, to show how multi-channel observations can constrain UV and IR details of the theory, namely the exact decay portal and hadronization behaviour respectively. This provides unique complementary discovery and diagnostic potential to Hidden Valley searches at colliders. It is interesting to note that thermal WIMPs annihilating to $\mathcal{O}(10~\mathrm{GeV})$ dark glueballs and then the Standard Model via the Twin-Higgs-like decay portal can account for the Galactic Centre Excess while respecting other constraints., Comment: 34 pages, 12 figures. 33. Enhanced nonlinear interferometry via seeding

Abstract

We analyse a nonlinear interferometer, also known as an SU(1,1) interferometer, in the presence of internal losses and inefficient detectors. To overcome these limitations, we consider the effect of seeding one of the interferometer input modes with either a number state or a coherent state. We derive analytical expressions for the interference visibility, contrast, phase sensitivity, and signal-to-noise ratio, and show a significant enhancement in all these quantities as a function of the seeding photon number. For example, we predict that, even in the presence of substantial losses and highly inefficient detectors, we can achieve the same quantum-limited phase sensitivity of an unseeded nonlinear interferometer by seeding with a few tens of photons. Furthermore, we observe no difference between a number or a coherent seeding state when the interferometer operates in the low-gain regime, which enables seeding with an attenuated laser. 34. Skilling the gap : identifying barriers in AI education to open up pathways and broaden opportunities

Abstract

As technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics advance, it becomes more and more important for the public to understand these technologies and how to retrain in these areas if they wish. Further to this, the rapid advancement of these technologies has created a 'skills gap' which means companies need more workers with skills in AI-related areas to conduct their business. This thesis aims to understand the barriers preventing the public from taking advantage of opportunities to learn about or retrain in AI, particularly those who have the desire and resources to do so. Initially, 21 stakeholders (7 thought leaders, 2 industry experts, 6 adult educators and 6 members of public) were interviewed about AI training. This study was used to gain an understanding of current thoughts on AI training for the public. To further probe into the barriers identified by the interviews, two online surveys were designed to understand the requirements to work in AI-related areas. Firstly 39 members of the public were surveyed. They were questioned on what they believed were the skills, qualifications and traits needed to work in AI-related areas. As well as how these requirements could be obtained and how easy or difficult obtaining them would be. The second survey asked similar questions of 15 hiring managers about the requirements they looked for when hiring for these jobs. They were also asked about their company's involvement in retraining and allowing employees to move into AI-related roles. Finally, a co- design strategy is proposed for development of community AI education (which did not go ahead because of the pandemic) as future work. The barriers identified include a lack of a clear path on how to move into AI-related roles and a stereotypical view of those who work in AI. Further to this there exists a narrow view of AI roles (as highly technical), and as such there is a lack of education for those who work alongside AI (rather than build or create it). Importantly, there is gatekeeping coming from experts, hiring managers and people themselves which prevents AI education from reaching those who are not technical or degree educated. Recommendations on how these barriers can be addressed and an outline of a co-design programme for community AI education have also been included.

Abstract

Abstract We study confining dark sectors where the lightest hadrons are glueballs. Such models can provide viable dark matter candidates and appear in some neutral naturalness scenarios. In this work, we introduce a new phenomenological model of dark glueball hadronization inspired by the Lund string model. This enables us to make the most physically-motivated predictions for dark glueball phenomenology at the LHC to date. Our model approximately reproduces the expected thermal distribution of hadron species as an emergent consequence of hadronization dynamics. The ability to predict the production of glueball states heavier than the lightest species significantly expands the reach of long-lived glueball searches in MATHUSLA compared to previous simplified estimates. We also characterize regions of parameter space where emerging and/or semivisible jets could arise from pure-glue dark sectors, thereby providing new benchmark models that motivate searches for these signatures.

GRILLBot is the winning system in the 2022 Alexa Prize TaskBot Challenge, moving towards the next generation of multimodal task assistants. It is a voice assistant to guide users through complex real-world tasks in the domains of cooking and home improvement. These are long-running and complex tasks that require flexible adjustment and adaptation. The demo highlights the core aspects, including a novel Neural Decision Parser for contextualized semantic parsing, a new "TaskGraph" state representation that supports conditional execution, knowledge-grounded chit-chat, and automatic enrichment of tasks with images and videos.

37. Induced Natural Language Rationales and Interleaved Markup Tokens Enable Extrapolation in Large Language Models

Abstract

The ability to extrapolate, i.e., to make predictions on sequences that are longer than those presented as training examples, is a challenging problem for current deep learning models. Recent work shows that this limitation persists in state-of-the-art Transformer-based models. Most solutions to this problem use specific architectures or training methods that do not generalize to other tasks. We demonstrate that large language models can succeed in extrapolation without modifying their architecture or training procedure. Our experimental results show that generating step-by-step rationales and introducing marker tokens are both required for effective extrapolation. First, we induce a language model to produce step-by-step rationales before outputting the answer to effectively communicate the task to the model. However, as sequences become longer, we find that current models struggle to keep track of token positions. To address this issue, we interleave output tokens with markup tokens that act as explicit positional and counting symbols. Our findings show how these two complementary approaches enable remarkable sequence extrapolation and highlight a limitation of current architectures to effectively generalize without explicit surface form guidance. 38. VILT: Video Instructions Linking for Complex Tasks

Abstract

This work addresses challenges in developing conversational assistants that support rich multimodal video interactions to accomplish real-world tasks interactively. We introduce the task of automatically linking instructional videos to task steps as "Video Instructions Linking for Complex Tasks" (VILT). Specifically, we focus on the domain of cooking and empowering users to cook meals interactively with a video-enabled Alexa skill. We create a reusable benchmark with 61 queries from recipe tasks and curate a collection of 2,133 instructional "How-To" cooking videos. Studying VILT with state-of-the-art retrieval methods, we find that dense retrieval with ANCE is the most effective, achieving an NDCG@3 of 0.566 and P@1 of 0.644. We also conduct a user study that measures the effect of incorporating videos in a real-world task setting, where 10 participants perform several cooking tasks with varying multimodal experimental conditions using a state-of-the-art Alexa TaskBot system. Abstract

Competitive online games use rating systems for matchmaking; progression-based algorithms that estimate the skill level of players with interpretable ratings in terms of the outcome of the games they played. However, the overall experience of players is shaped by factors beyond the sole outcome of their games. In this paper, we engineer several features from in-game statistics to model players and create ratings that accurately represent their behavior and true performance level. We then compare the estimating power of our behavioral ratings against ratings created with three mainstream rating systems by predicting rank of players in four popular game modes from the competitive shooter genre. Our results show that the behavioral ratings present more accurate performance estimations while maintaining the interpretability of the created representations. Abstract

Sensing with undetected photons enables the measurement of absorption and phase shifts at wavelengths different from those detected. Here, we experimentally map the balance and loss parameter space in a non-degenerate nonlinear interferometer, showing the recovery of sensitivity despite internal losses at the detection wavelength. We further explore an interaction-free operation mode with a detector-to-sample incident optical power ratio of >200. This allows changes in attowatt levels of power at 3.4 $\mu$m wavelength to be detected at 1550 nm, immune to the level of thermal black-body background. This reveals an ultra-sensitive infrared imaging methodology capable of probing samples effectively `in the dark'.

Abstract

CODEC is a document and entity ranking benchmark that focuses on complex research topics. We target essay-style information needs of social science researchers, i.e. "How has the UK's Open Banking Regulation benefited Challenger Banks?". CODEC includes 42 topics developed by researchers and a new focused web corpus with semantic annotations including entity links. This resource includes expert judgments on 17,509 documents and entities (416.9 per topic) from diverse automatic and interactive manual runs. The manual runs include 387 query reformulations, providing data for query performance prediction and automatic rewriting evaluation. CODEC includes analysis of state-of-the-art systems, including dense retrieval and neural re-ranking. The results show the topics are challenging with headroom for document and entity ranking improvement. Query expansion with entity information shows significant gains in document ranking, demonstrating the resource's value for evaluating and improving entity-oriented search. We also show that the manual query reformulations significantly improve document ranking and entity ranking performance. Abstract

In this work, we consider the case of a strongly coupled dark/hidden sector, which extends the Standard Model (SM) by adding an additional non-Abelian gauge group. These extensions generally contain matter fields, much like the SM quarks, and gauge fields similar to the SM gluons. We focus on the exploration of such sectors where the dark particles are produced at the LHC through a portal and undergo rapid hadronization within the dark sector before decaying back, at least in part and potentially with sizeable lifetimes, to SM particles, giving a range of possibly spectacular signatures such as emerging or semi-visible jets. Other, non-QCD-like scenarios leading to soft unclustered energy patterns or glueballs are also discussed. After a review of the theory, existing benchmarks and constraints, this work addresses how to build consistent benchmarks from the underlying physical parameters and present new developments for the PYTHIA Hidden Valley module, along with jet substructure studies. 49. Simulating Glueball Production in $N_f = 0$ QCD

Abstract

In an $SU(N_c)$ gauge theory with zero light quark flavours $N_f = 0$, the only hadronic states that form below the confinement scale are composite gluon states called glueballs. These minimal confining sectors arise in many Hidden Valley extensions of the Standard Model, including scenarios that could hold the solution to the dark matter question and the hierarchy problem. Quantitative study of dark glueball phenomenology requires an understanding of pure glue hadronization, which to date is severely lacking. In this work we show that significant progress can be made by combining a perturbative pure glue parton shower with a self-consistent and physically motivated parameterization of the unknown non-perturbative physics, thanks to the modest hierarchy between the glueball mass and the confinement scale. We make our simulation code available as the public GlueShower package, the first glueball generator for Hidden Valley theories, and perform preliminary studies of several glueball production observables, with theoretical uncertainties that take the full range of possible hadronization scenarios into account.
