Introduction: diabetes mellitus has become a serious health problem, due to its high prevalence, in addition to the high degree of mortality and disability it generates. Objective: to evaluate the economic burden of diabetes mellitus in the Diabetic Care Center of Pinar del Río, during 2016. Method: cross-sectional descriptive study through the cost approach of the disease, working with a target group of (U = 8623), where all patients attending the aforementioned institution were included, the cost reports for diabetes mellitus issued by the unit were also used, the descriptive statistics was applied. Results: the direct and indirect costs of diabetes mellitus in the Diabetic Care Center of Pinar del Río in 2016 were not individually reflected, which made us to infer that the general assessment of the economic burden of diabetes mellitus could lead to the non-implementation of the approved budget for 2016 in the Diabetic Care Center. Conclusions: based on the results of this investigation, it is necessary to reflect on the economic need to separate the costs of diabetes mellitus type 1 and 2 in the analysis of the budget, taking into account that they do not have the same levels of expenses in their treatment, as well as direct and indirect costs, to obtain real costs in the care of patients with the disease.

Introduction: diabetes mellitus is a disease where chronic complications lead to the first causes of disability. Objective: to determine the prevalence of secondary disability due to complications of diabetes mellitus in patients who attended the expert committee of Pinar del Río municipality during the years 2010 to 2016. Method: observational, descriptive, cross-sectional research in a target group of 61 diabetic patients assessed by the commission of medical experts where the complications of diabetes were included among the clinical diagnoses. Descriptive statistics was used by means of MapInfo software, the disability was distributed geographically according to the place of work. Results: the age of highest incidence corresponded to the group of 50 to 54 years for both sexes, the highest percentage comes from urban areas, job-category of workers, from the total number of patients assessed by the expert commission 54 obtained disablement opinion for a prevalence of 88.5%; 52 show temporary disability. In 2016 there was an increase in patients with disabilities representing 27.86%. The complication showing the highest prevalence of disability was: diabetic foot. The progression time from the onset of complications resulting in disability corresponded to the highest percent of more than five years with 51.8%. Conclusions: type 2 diabetic patients attending the experts’ offices in Pinar del Río municipality due to chronic complications of diabetes, had a high prevalence of disability, which constitutes a health problem that must be addressed.
