No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-01-01 Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP) Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) The objective of this research was to evaluate the impact of the different shading densities on performance, carcass and meat quality of Angus-Nellore heifers finished in a conventional system (CS) and integrated livestock forest (ILF) system with two different densities of eucalyptus trees (ILF-1: 187 and ILF-2: 446 trees/ha). Seventy-two heifers were randomly assigned to three groups, and the animal performance was evaluated during the finishing phase. Forty-eight samples of the longissimus thoracis muscle were collected for the analysis of carcass and meat quality. No differences were found between treatments for final live weight and average daily gain (P > 0.05). The weight gain per ha and carcass weight gain per ha was lower in ILF-2 system in comparison to CS system, which did not differ from ILF-1. However, the stocking rate was higher in CS in comparison to that of the ILF-1 and ILF-2 systems (P < 0.05). Microclimatic variables and thermal comfort indices were better in ILF-1 and ILF-2 systems, except for the wind speed that was higher in CS due to the absence of trees (P < 0.05). Carcass and meat quality did not differ between the evaluated systems (P > 0.05). Only the pH and protein content showed a difference (P < 0.05), but both were within the appropriate range warranting the meat good quality. It is thus concluded that the system with lower tree density does not interfere with the performance and carcass characteristics of heifers. In addition, the systems with trees provide better comfort to the animals and do not affect the quality of their carcass and meat. Integrated crop-livestock-forest system appears as strategy to reduce pasture recovery costs and diversify farmer’s income with the sale of the wood of eucalyptus trees. The objective of this work was to evaluate the animal performance and economic viability of systems without shade availability (ICL: Integrated Crop-Livestock) and with two tree densities (ICLF-1L: Integrated Crop-Livestock-Forest, 196 trees ha-1; ICLF-3L: Integrated Crop-Livestock-Forest, 448 trees ha-1). The objective of this work was to evaluate in a temporal manner the physical attributes of the soil, under a crop-livestock-forest integration system, to verify possible contributions physical quality of the soil and system sustainability itself. The soil under study is a Typical Ultisol. The randomized block design was distributed in four respective treatments: crop-livestock integration, without the tree component (CLI), agrosilvipastoral system, with one eucalyptus (Eucalyptus ssp.) line of shading (AS1L), agrosilvipastoral system, with three eucalyptus lines of shading (AS3L), and exclusive culture of eucalyptus. The samples were collected from 2014 to 2018, in the 0–0.05, 0.05–0.1, and 0.1–0.2 m layers, to the water infiltration evaluations in soil, resistance to penetration, content of soil humidity. The results revealed that the systems that use integration improve or maintain physical quality of the soil, without compacting or negatively influencing water infiltration, highlighting the treatments CLI, AS1L e AS3L through time, which promotes its sustainability. Os sistemas integrados de produção agropecuária visam a sustentabilidade, procurando explorar o máximo da área, além de diminuir os impactos sobre as propriedades do solo. O presente trabalho teve objetivo estudar a distribuição do tamanho de poros de um Latossolo em um sistema integrado de produção agropecuária após três anos de implantação do sistema. O experimento foi realizado na Fazenda pertencente ao grupo Facholi, no município de Caiuá/SP. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualizados, com três repetições e compostos por 7 tratamentos: 1 - Soja – Milho + B. ruziziensis (pastejo); 2 - Soja – Milho + Piatã (pastejo); 3 - Soja – Milho + Paiaguás (pastejo); 4 - Soja - Piatã (pastejo 2 anos) – Soja - Piatã (pastejo); 5 - Soja - Paiaguás (pastejo 2 anos) – Soja - Paiaguás (pastejo); 6 - Soja – milho (Plantio direto); 7 - Soja – milho (Preparo convencional). Foram realizadas as avaliações dos seguintes atributos do solo: macroporosidade, microporosidade, porosidade total e densidade do solo, em duas camadas do solo; 0,00-0,10 e 0,10-0,20 m de profundidade, em três épocas de coleta. Os resultados mostram que a macroporosidade aumentou com o tempo e houve uma diminuição da densidade do solo, mostrando que os sistemas avaliados influenciaram positivamente os atributos do solo estudados, melhorando por tanto a qualidade do solo.

O sistema integração lavoura-pecuária-floresta tem a característica de integrar culturas pastagens, componentes arbóreos e animais herbívoros em uma mesma área. O presente trabalho teve por objetivo estudar os atributos físicos e matéria orgânica de um Latossolo Vermelho distrófico em um sistema de integração lavoura-pecuária-floresta que está sendo conduzido desde o ano de 2012, bem como a produção de capim marandu. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições e composto por quatro tratamentos: T1 - integração lavoura-pecuária (ILP); T2 - sistema agrossilvipastoril, com sombreamento de 1 linha de eucalipto (ILPF 1L); T3 - sistema agrossilvipastoril, com sombreamento de 3 linhas de eucalipto (ILPF 3L); e T4 plantio exclusivo de eucalipto (bosque). Foram avaliados os atributos estudados durante o período de junho de 2017 a maio de 2018. Avaliou-se a estabilidade de agregados, porosidade do solo (macro e micro), infiltração de água no solo, resistência mecânica a penetração e umidade do solo, matéria orgânica e a produção de massa seca de forragem. Os resultados mostram que houve diferença significativa para a macroporosidade e resistência a penetração. A maior produção de forragem foi observada no T1 onde não havia efeito de sombreamento

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-01-01 This study characterizes the changes in leaf mass, morphological composition and nutritional value of leaf blades of palisadegrass (Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu) under continuous grazing in the first year of implementation of pasture and after second year of the eucalyptus planting in an Integrated Crop-Livestock System and Integrated Crop-Livestock-Forest, which were tested in the four seasons. The experimental design was in random blocks, with three treatments: Crop-Livestock System (ICL) and Integrated Crop-Livestock-Forest with two eucalyptus tree densities (ICLF-1L, 196 eucalyptus trees ha-1 and ICLF-3L, 448 eucalyptus trees ha-1) and four replicates. Sixty castrated Nellore cattle with initial weight of 235.43 ± 25.46 kg and mean age of 16 ± 2.81 months were used during the growing phase under continuous grazing. The agronomic variables were: total dry mass of forage, leaves, stem and dead material; leaf: stem and live: senescent material ratios; and accumulation rate. The leaf: stem and live: senescent material relation did not obtain any difference between the evaluated systems. Dry matter, crude protein, fiber fractions and digestibility of leaf blades were evaluated. Dry mass of the forage (6775 kg ha-1), stem (2175 kg ha-1), senescent material (3175 kg ha-1) and dry matter content (28.6%) were greater in the ICL, whereas crude protein (11.3%) was greater in the ICLFs. On the other hand, accumulation rate and dry mass of leaf blades did not change between systems. Thus, until the first year of grazing, tree systems have advantages, because the forage production (accumulation rate) and leaf mass are similar to those of plants in full sun, besides showing higher nutritional value. The objective this paper was to evaluate the effect of two categories of beef finished in pasture with supplementation with two herbage allowance on performance, carcass and meat characteristics. Thirty-six Guzera cattle were used, 18 steers and 18 heifers with an initial age of 20 months. There was significant difference in daily weight gain for animal category and the herbage allowance, which were higher in males and animals submitted to high herbage allowance. Steers showed higher final weight, carcass weight and forequarter yield compared with the heifers, although the hindquarter yield was higher in the heifers, however the herbage allowance did not influence these characteristics. There were not statistical differences for carcass yield, ribeye area, backfat thickness and marbling score for the animal categories and herbage allowance. The meat chemical composition of the steers did not differ of the heifers, however, the animals submitted to high herbage allowance was increase in ether extract and pH, decrease in protein percentage. It was concluded that the animal category and the herbage allowance changed the animal performance, improving performance in males and cattle submitted to high herbage allowance. RESUMO O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de duas categorias de bovinos terminados em pastagem com suplementação em duas ofertas de forragem no desempenho, na qualidade da carcaça e da carne. Foram utilizados 36 bovinos Guzerá, 18 novilhos e 18 novilhas, com idade inicial de 20 meses de idade. Observou-se diferença significativa no ganho de peso diário para categoria animal e ofertas de forragem, que foram superiores nos machos e nos animais submetidos à oferta alta de forragem. Os novilhos apresentaram maior peso final, peso de carcaça e rendimento de dianteiro em comparação com as novilhas, embora o rendimento do traseiro tenha sido maior para as novilhas, entretanto as ofertas de forragem não influenciaram essas características. Não houve diferenças estatísticas para rendimento de carcaça, área de olho de lombo, espessura de gordura subcutânea e marmorização para categorias de animais e ofertas de forragem. Quanto à composição química, a carne de novilhos não diferiu das novilhas. Os animais submetidos à alta oferta de forragem tiveram aumento no extrato etéreo e pH, redução na porcentagem de proteína. Conclui-se que a categoria animal e os níveis de forragem alteram o desempenho animal, melhorando, assim, o desempenho nos machos e nos bovinos submetidos à alta oferta de forragem.

The residual feed intake (RFI), the most commonly used measurement of feed efficiency, is expensive and can only be used in a small number of animals. The Kleiber Index has also been proposed to measure RFI. In this study, we estimated genetic parameters for the Kleiber Index average daily weight gain and adjusted weights to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of potential responses to selection and support the development of breeding strategies. Genetic analyses were conducted on animal records from a data file with 36,505 animals recorded by ABCZ (Brazilian Association of Zebu Breeders). Restricted maximum likelihood estimates of genetic parameters were computed with Wombat software. Heritabilities ranged from 0.24 to 0.22 for adjusted weights, from 0.12 to 0.26 for Kleiber Indexes and from 0.15 to 0.22 for average daily gains. Correlations between traits ranged from -0.06 to 0.99. Results indicated that Kleiber Indexes at different ages do not constitute a viable solution for the selection of bulls and cows for Brazilian Brahman populations in terms of feeding efficiency. RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a pastagem, o desempenho, o conforto térmico e os parâmetros hematológicos de bovinos Nelore na fase de terminação em sistemas integrados de produção agropecuária com duas densidades de árvores (ILPF-1L= 196 árvores ha-1 e ILPF-3L=448 árvores ha-1) e em pleno sol (ILP). Foram avaliados a massa e a composição morfológica da forragem, o ganho médio diário, o ganho de peso por área e a taxa de lotação no verão e no outono, bem como as variáveis climáticas dos sistemas em três horários e parâmetros hematológicos dos animais (n=60). A massa de forragem foi superior no tratamento ILP e no verão (P0,05). A temperatura ambiente, a temperatura do globo e o índice de temperatura e umidade foram melhores nos tratamentos com sombreamento e no período da manhã, proporcionando maior conforto aos animais, sendo ainda confirmado pelo menor volume globular dos bovinos em ILP (P

RESUMO Objetivou-se estimar herdabilidades e correlações de características ponderais com 36.505 animais, da Associação Brasileira de Criadores Zebu. O modelo incluiu efeito genético direto, materno, ambiente permanente, residual - aleatórios e efeitos de grupos contemporâneos - fixos. Os parâmetros foram estimados pelo método de máxima verossimilhança restrita (REML), utilizando-se software Wombat. Os resultados das herdabilidades variaram de 0,20 a 0,25 peso à desmama e ao sobreano; 0,16 a 0,20 peso metabólico não ajustado e ajustado à desmama, 0,21 a 0,25 peso metabólico ajustado à desmama e metabólico ajustado ao sobreano. As correlações genéticas entre peso à desmama e peso metabólico não ajustado à desmama, peso à desmama e peso metabólico ajustado à desmama são, respectivamente 0,76 e 1,00. A correlação genética entre peso ao sobreano e metabólico ao sobreano não ajustado, peso ao sobreano com metabólico sobreano ajustado foram 0,97 e 1,00. Correlação genética entre peso à desmama e ao sobreano foi 0,72, peso metabólico não ajustado à desmama e metabólico não ajustado ao sobreano 0,54, peso metabólico ajustado à desmama e metabólico ajustado ao sobreano foi 0,71. Correlações genéticas entre peso à desmama e metabólico ajustado à desmama e peso ano com metabólico ano ajustado foram 1,00 e 1,00. Portanto, utilização de peso metabólico sem ajuste de idade pode viesar estimativas de parâmetros genéticos. ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to estimate heritability and correlations of 36,505 animals, belonging to the Brazilian Association of Zebu Breeders. They were estimated by Restricted Maximum Likelihood method (REML) using Wombat software. The model included the direct additive genetic effect, maternal, permanent maternal environment and residual as random and fixed effects of contemporary group. The results of heritability ranged from 0,20 to 0,25 for weaning weight and yearling; 0,16 to 0,20 for real metabolic weaning, 0,21 to 0,25 for metabolic adjusted weight at weaning and yearling metabolic adjusted. The genetic correlations between weaning weight with metabolic real, weaning weight adjusted with metabolic are respectively 0,76 and 1,00. The genetic correlation between yearling weight and metabolic real, yearling weight adjusted metabolic were 0,97 and 1,00. Genetic correlations between weaning weight and yearling was 0,72, real metabolic weight at weaning and yearling real metabolic was 0,54, adjusted metabolic weight at weaning and yearling metabolic adjusted was 0,71. Genetic correlations between weight at weaning and adjusted metabolic and weight-adjusted metabolic year were 1,00 and 1,00. Therefore, the use of metabolic weight without age adjustment can warn the estimates.

The objective of this study was to characterize the displacement patterns of Nellore cattle in areas of crop livestock and crop livestock forest integration systems with density of 196 and 448 eucalyptus ha-1. Paddock maps were drawn from satellite images of the experimental area. In each evaluated system there was one trained observer, that on the paddock map recorded the place the animals stayed every 10 minutes. The exploration of the area by the animals was observed for 12 hours, starting at 6 a.m. and ending at 6 p.m. The displacement of the animals in the ILP system during the evaluation was bigger than the ILPFs systems, resulting in greater exploration of the area, this fact was due the presence of trees that, for the animals resembled fences, limiting the exploration of the paddock in ILPFs. In the ILPF with higher density of trees, this behavior was more evident. In the period from 10:10 a.m. to 14:00 p.m. the displacement of the animals was decrease by the high temperatures in all systems, although it was more effective in the ILP system. It is concluded that the displacement of cattle is influenced by the presence and density of arboreal component integrated crop livestock system.

However, its effects on the carcass and meat quality of the animals produced in it need to be elucidated. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate carcass and meat characteristics of Nellore cattle finished in ICLS without shade availability (integrated crop-livestock: ICL) and with two tree densities (integrated crop-livestock-forest, ICLF, at 196 trees/ha and 448 trees/ha). The experimental design was in complete blocks, with three treatments (ICL, ICLF-1L and ICLF-3L) and four replicates per treatment, totaling 12 experimental plots. Sixty castrated Nellore cattle of approximately 28 ± 2.81 months of age and mean weight at 385.71 ± 27.17 kg were used. After the slaughter of the animals, 48 samples of the longissimus thoracis muscle were collected for carcass and meat quality analyzes. There were no differences (P > 0.05) between the treatments for the final live weight, contributing to the absence of difference in weight and yield of the hot carcass, forequarter, hindquarter and flank (P > 0.05). Similarly, no differences were found (P > 0.05) between treatments for initial and final ribeye area, initial and final backfat thickness, marbling, pH and glycogen, both measured at 2 h and 24 h post mortem. The proximate composition, cholesterol, pH, cooking loss, shear force, collagen, meat color and microbiological analysis presented no differences (P > 0.05) among the evaluated treatments. In relation to the fatty acids of the meat and the nutritional quality index (NQI), no was observed difference between treatments (P>0.05), but the ω6:ω3 ratio, of the meat of the animals presented values considered healthy for human consumption in all evaluated treatments, characteristic of meat from animals to pasture. Thus, the study concludes that the integration systems that use the tree component do not benefit the quality of the final product, the meat of Nellore cattle, but should be recommended because they do not interfere in quality of the same. Foram utilizados 36 bovinos Nelore, machos, castrados, com peso inicial de 417 ± 10,7kg e idade média de 20 meses. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado com dois tratamentos e dezoito repetições. Os tratamentos foram constituídos de sal mineral proteinado (SMP) fornecido ad libitum e da suplementação com concentrado (SC) com 0,5% do peso corporal (PC). Após abate, as carcaças foram pesadas, identificadas e resfriadas por 24 horas. Foram medidos rendimento de carcaça, área de olho de lombo, espessura de gordura subcutânea, pH e escore de marmorização. Os animais da SC apresentaram maior (P=0,00007) ganho de peso médio diário (0,562kg) e espessura de gordura subcutânea ajustada para 100kg de carcaça (1,7mm) em relação aos animais do SMP (0,395kg; 1,3mm), respectivamente, mas não diferiram (P>0,01) em relação ao peso de carcaça, rendimento de carcaça, área de olho de lombo, pH e marmorização. Conclui-se que a suplementação com concentrado durante o período seco proporciona maior ganho de peso médio diário e espessura de gordura subcutânea ajustada para 100kg de carcaça, antecipando a idade de abate e a utilização de sal mineral proteinado com massa de forragem adequada pode ser uma alternativa de suplementação devido menor exigência de estrutura, controle de consumo, menor mão-de-obra e maior facilidade no fornecimento. The objective of this study was evaluate the effect of two supplementation strategies in the dry season on performance and carcass traits of steers finished on marandu grass. The experimental design was completely randomized with two treatments and eighteen repetitions per treatment. The treatments consisted of ad libitum protein mineral salt (PMS) and supplementation with concentrate (SC) with 0.5% of body weight. It was used 36 Nelore steers with initial weight of 417kg and 20 months of age. After slaughter, carcasses were weighted, identified and cooled for 24 hours. Carcass yield, ribeye, fat thickness, pH and marbling score were measured. The animals supplemented with concentrate had higher (P0.01) in relation to carcass weight, carcass yield, ribeye, pH and marbling. The results show that the supplementation with concentrate accelerates gains, allowing early and better condition of slaughter and the use of protein mineral salt with adequate forage mass may be an alternative supplementation because less need for structure, control consumption, lower labor and greater ease in supply. O experimento foi conduzido na Depressão Central do Rio Grande do Sul, de 21/04 a 02/06/94 (estabelecimento da pastagem) até 11/06/94 (período de utilização), com o objetivo de avaliar a dinâmica, a produção, a qualidade de forragem e o custo de produção da pastagem de aveia preta mais azevém, em pastejo contínuo, fertilizada com diferentes fontes de nitrogênio (uréia e sulfato de amônio) em cobertura. A mistura foi semeada de forma direta e adubada com 200kg/ha da fórmula 05-30-15. O nível de nitrogênio em cobertura foi de 200kg/ha para ambas as fontes, sendo parceladas em três aplicações. A fonte de nitrogênio não afetou, significativamente, a taxa de acumulação diária de matéria seca (MS) (38,7 e 36,1kg/ha de MS/dia), a produção total de forragem (7.410 e 6.618kg/ha de MS) e a qualidade da forragem. A porcentagem de MS foi de 18,26 e 18,47%, o teor de proteína bruta, de 22,14 e 22,69% e a digestibilidade in vitro da matéria orgânica, de 57,85 e 57,04% para uréia (U) e sulfato de amônio (SA), respectivamente. O custo total/ha da pastagem foi de R$295,70 e R$379,40; o N representando 36,08 e 50,20%, para uréia e sulfato de amônio, respectivamente. O custo/quilograma de MS produzida foi de R$0,039 e R$0,057 para pastagem em que foi utilizado a uréia e o sulfato de amônio, respectivamente. Conclui-se que, em pastagem de gramíneas anuais de inverno, a escolha da fonte de N deve ser baseada no custo/kg de N.

O manejo do solo sem as operações de lavração e gradagem não incorpora os resíduos culturais, fertilizantes e corretivos, alterando a distribuição e disponibilidade dos nutrientes. Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar as modificações químicas decorrentes da adoção do sistema plantio direto (SPD) comparativamente ao cultivo convencional (SCC) e ao campo nativo (CN). Em 1995, coletaram-se amostras de um Podzólico Vermelho-Amarelo textura arenosa/argilosa, em quatro profundidades (0-5, 5-10, 10-20 e 20-40 cm), num experimento instalado, em 1989, na Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (RS). Foi utilizado o delineamento em blocos ao acaso com parcelas subdivididas e quatro repetições. Determinaram-se o ponto de efeito salino nulo (PESN), as cargas permanentes, as substâncias húmicas, o pH em água, Al e Ca + Mg trocáveis, H + Al, N total e mineral, K da solução do solo, trocável e não-trocável, e P disponível, total e orgânico. Calcularam-se a CTC efetiva e a pH 7,0, a saturação por Al e por bases e a percentagem de P orgânico. Não houve variação no PESN em decorrência dos diferentes sistemas de manejo do solo. A adoção do SPD aumentou o teor de carbono orgânico, de ácidos fúlvicos e húmicos, CTC, disponibilidade de P e K e acidez potencial, especialmente na camada de 0-5 cm, comparativamente ao SCC. No-tillage soil management does not permit incorporation of crop residues and requires surface application of fertilizers and corrective agents, thereby affecting nutrient availability and distribution. This study was carried out to evaluate the chemical changes in no-tillage system compared to conventional tillage and native grass field. Samples from a sandy/clay Red-Yellow Podzolic (Typic Hapludalf), taken at 0-5, 5-10, 10-20 and 20-40 cm depth, were used to determine zero point of salt effect (ZPSE), humic substances, permanent charge, soil pH, exchangeable Al, Ca + Mg and H + Al, total and mineral N, available, total and organic P and available, exchangeable and soil solution K. Effective CTC and pH 7.0, aluminum and base saturations and the percentage of organic P were determined. The soil management did not affect the ZPSE. The no-tillage system increased the fulvic and humic acids, nutrient availability, negative charges, and soil acidity.

Determinou-se a produção de bovinos em pastagem de aveia preta (Avena strigosa Schreb.) e azevém (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), submetida à adubação nitrogenada com 0; 150 e 300 kg de N ha-1, em cobertura, sob a forma de ureia. Utilizaram-se 36 bezerros como animais-teste, com idade média e peso de 10,5 meses e 180 kg, respectivamente. O método de pastejo foi o de lotação contínua com taxa de lotação variável. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso, com três repetições (piquetes). O ganho de peso médio dos animais foi similar para os níveis de adubação avaliados (0,925; 0,969 e 1,045 kg dia-1, respectivamente). A taxa de lotação e ganho de peso vivo por hectare aumentaram linearmente com o incremento das doses de nitrogênio. A eficiência na produção animal foi 2,040 e 1,766 kg de ganho de peso por kg de nitrogênio aplicado, para as doses de 150 e 300 kg de nitrogênio, respectivamente. A taxa de lotação e o ganho de peso vivo por hectare dos bezerros de corte aumentaram com as doses de nitrogênio, de 0 a 300 kg de N ha-1; porém, a melhor eficiência em ganho de peso por unidade de nitrogênio aplicado foi obtida na dose de 150 kg de N ha-1. We evaluated animal production on black oats (Avena strigosa Schreb.) and italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) pasture submitted to nitrogen top fertilization of 0; 150 and 300 kg ha-1, in the form of urea. We used 36 calves with average age and average weight of 10.5 months and 180 kg, respectively, as test-animals. The grazing system used was continuous with variable stocking rate. The block design was completely randomized with three replicates (paddock). Average weight gain was similar for the levels evaluated (0.925; 0.969 and 1.045 kg day-1, respectively). Stocking rate and live weight gain per hectare showed a linear relation with nitrogen levels. The efficiency of animal production was 2.040 and 1.766 kg of weight gain per kg of nitrogen used for the dose of 150 and 300 of N, respectively. The stocking rate and live weight gain per hectare of beef calves increased with the nitrogen levels, from 0 to 300 kg of N ha-1. However, the best efficiency in weight gain per unit of nitrogen applied was obtained with the dose of 150 kg of N ha-1.

O objetivo deste experimento foi avaliar a produtividade animal e o retorno econômico do uso de uréia ou sulfato de amônio em adubação de cobertura em pastagem de aveia preta (Avena strigosa Schreb) mais azevém (Lolium multiflorum Lam). A pastagem foi implantada em 21/04/94, com período de pastejo de 05/06 a 06/11/94. O método de pastejo foi o contínuo, com lotação variável. Bezerras de corte com idade média de 10 meses foram usadas. A dose de nitrogênio usada foi de 200 kg/ha, parcelada em três aplicações. A fonte de nitrogênio não influenciou o ganho de peso médio diário, que foi de 0,579 e 0,615 kg; a carga animal, que foi de 873 e 842 kg de peso vivo/ha; e o ganho de peso vivo/ha, que foi de 428 e 453 kg/ha, para uréia e sulfato de amônio, respectivamente. A adubação nitrogenada representou 34,10 e 47,56% do custo total da pastagem, quando foram usados uréia e sulfato de amônio, respectivamente. A receita bruta foi de R$/ha 341,40 e 362,50 e a receita líquida, R$/ha 54,60 e 2,10, para uréia e sulfato de amônio, respectivamente. Como não ocorreu diferença no ganho de peso vivo/ha, a decisão de usar uréia ou sulfato de amônio para adubação em cobertura de pastagem de inverno deve basear-se no preço por kg de nitrogênio. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the animal productivity and economic return of the use of urea or ammonium sulfate for fertilization of oat (Avena strigosa Schreb) plus ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) pasture. The pasture was established on 04/21/94 and the grazing period occured from 06/05 to 11/06/94. The continuous grazing method with variable stocking rate was used. The animals used were beef heifers, with 10 months of age. The amount of nitrogen used was 200 kg/ha, subdivided in three applications. The source of nitrogen did not significantly affect the average daily gain, .579 and .615 kg, the stocking rate, 873 and 842 kg of live weight/ha and the live weight gain/ha, 428 and 453 kg/ha, for urea and ammonium sulfate, respectively. Nitrogen fertilization represented 34.10 and 47.56% of the total cost of the pasture, when urea and ammonium sulfate were used, respectively. The gross income was of U$ 299.50 and 318.00/ha and the net income was of U$ 47.90 and 1.90/ha, for urea and ammonium sulfate, respectively. Since no significant difference occurred in live weight gain/ha, the decision of using urea or ammonium sulfate for fertilization of annual winter pasture should be based on the price per kg of nitrogen.

O experimento foi conduzido em área da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, RS, com o objetivo de verificar os efeitos de três níveis de adubação nitrogenada (0, 150 e 300 kg/ha de N) em pastagem de milheto (Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke) cv. Comum, sobre a produção animal. Foram utilizados novilhos de corte e avaliados o desempenho por animal, o número de animais.dia/ha e o ganho de peso vivo por área. O sistema de pastejo adotado foi o contínuo, com ajustes de carga para manter uma pressão de pastejo de 10%, caracterizando um resíduo médio de 3.168 kg de matéria seca/ha. As variáveis dependentes mostraram relação linear positiva com os níveis de adubação nitrogenada, o que denota o alto potencial do milheto. An experiment was conducted at the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil, with the objective of evaluating the effects of three N levels (0, 150 and 300 kg/ha), in pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke) cv. Comum, on animal production. Beef steers were assayed through daily liveweigh gain, gain per hectare and animals.day/hectare. A continuous grazing system was used, with stocking rate adjustments to maintain a 10% grazing pressure that characterized a medium residue of 3,168 kg of DM/ha. The dependent variables showed a positive linear relationship with the N levels, denoting the high animal production potential of pearl millet.
