Petrophysics and fluid-flow simulations are used to build a realistic pre- and post- CO 2 injection geological model for the Utsira formation at the Sleipner field, and the Fourier pseudospectral method is employed to compute synthetic seismograms. The methodology can be used to perform a seismic sensitivity analysis for the detection of carbon dioxide. We built the model solely based on the porosity and clay content of the formations with the aid of fluid-flow and seismic simulations. The pressure map before the injection is assumed to be hydrostatic for which a reference porosity map is defined. The injection induces pore pressure variations and partial saturation, which affect the poroelastic properties and hence the associated seismic response. A proper porosity–permeability–clay content relation is one of the key factors since permeability determines the preferential flow directions and the distribution of the CO 2 plume. The petrophysical model is based on a shaly sandstone (or sandy shale) to represent the caprock, Utsira Sand and embedded mudstone layers. The composite permeability (anisotropic) is analogous to the inverse electrical resistance model. Gas viscosity depends on pressure and temperature. The P- and S-wave velocities are obtained from Gassmann equation (pre-injection) and White's mesoscopic model (post-injection), which also yields the P-wave quality factor in the case of partial (patchy) saturation. To model a realistic situation, we implement a fractal variation of the porosity and clay content, based on the von Kármán correlation function. We then compare the real and synthetic seismograms (pre-injection and post-injection) and show the effect of attenuation on the seismic data. Simulations and real data show a remarkable match. Cenozoic sediments from the continental rise off the George V Land consist of silty/clayey facies variably rich in diatom ooze; these sediments hold a record of the glacial history of the Wilkes Subglacial Basin and are important for estimating the contribution of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet to global sea level changes during past transition to warmer climates. This is fundamental to predict future scenarios related to the global warming. The petrophysical properties of Antarctic marine sediments are influenced by the ice sheet dynamics and may affect the amplitude of seismic reflections. Through a seismic‐to‐well tie procedure, we investigate the origin of high amplitude reflections from Miocene‐early Pliocene deposits identified in two seismic lines crossing at the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 318 drill site U1359. Downhole and core log measurements are preconditioned and merged to obtain complete velocity and density records from the sea floor to the bottom of the deepest of the four wells drilled at this site. We generate a synthetic trace by convolving the reflectivity series with the seismic wavelet obtained from the sea‐floor reflection and match the synthetic trace to the seismic data with a time variant cross‐correlation procedure. This procedure established a robust time‐depth relationship, not achievable from the available small‐offset seismic data. To our knowledge, this is the first seismic‐to‐well tying in the George V Land area. Based on results from synthetic data, the anomalous high amplitude seismic package can be linked to changes in density of sediments. Such changes are interpreted as representative for the alternation of diatom‐rich (warm climate) and silty‐clay layers with ice‐rafted debris (cold climate) inside the deposits. We suggest that the analysis of the characteristics and the distribution of similar seismic anomaly around Antarctica can give insight into the modality of past Antarctic ice sheet dynamics. We simulate the effects of diagenesis, cementation and compaction on the elastic properties of shales and sandstones with four different petro-elastic theories and a basin-evolution model, based on constant heating and sedimentation rates. We consider shales composed of clay minerals, mainly smectite and illite, depending on the burial depth, and the pore space is assumed to be saturated with water at hydrostatic conditions. Diagenesis in shale (smectite/illite transformation here) as a function of depth is described by a fifth-order kinetic equation, based on an Arrhenius reaction rate. On the other hand, quartz cementation in sandstones is based on a model that estimates the volume of precipitated quartz cement and the resulting porosity loss from the temperature history, using an equation relating the precipitation rate to temperature. Effective pressure effects (additional compaction) are accounted for using the Athy equation and the Hertz–Mindlin model. The petro-elastic models yield similar seismic velocities, despite the different levels of complexity and physics approaches, with increasing density and seismic velocities as a function of depth. The methodology provides a simple procedure to obtain the velocity of shales and sandstones versus temperature and pressure due to the diagenesis-cementation-compaction process. We analyse the concepts of instantaneous frequency (IF) and quality factor (IQ). It is verified that the time-averaged IF is equal to the centroid of the signal energy of the spectrum and that the centroid of the signal spectrum is equal to the IF at the peak of the signal envelope. The latter property can be used to obtain the frequency shift required by tomographic methods. Then, we analyse the two-tone stationary Mandel signal in the lossless and lossy cases. The IQ is not infinite in the lossless case, although its reciprocal average vanishes, and the lossless and lossy IFs at the peak of the signal envelope are the same, whereas the IQ at this peak depends on the amplitudes and quality factors of the tones. The IQ of a propagating Ricker wavelet has a singularity at the peak of the envelope, which shows a shift in the lossy case, related to the velocity dispersion. We consider a lossy layer described by the Zener model. Varying its thickness implies a large variation in the IF, introducing unphysical spikes when the top and bottom reflections of the layer start to overlap. We compare the exact normal-incidence PP reflection coefficient [Geertsma–Smit expression] to approximations reported by several authors, based on open-pore boundary conditions at a plane interface between two porous media. The approximations correspond to low frequencies. Two of them are derived from the low-frequency Biot theory below the Biot characteristic frequency, but the results show significant differences much below the Biot frequency. Then, we extend the Geertsma–Smit equations by including the high-frequency viscodynamic operator (i.e., the full-frequency range Biot theory), showing that there are additional substantial differences at the high-frequency range. Use of this latter expression is required to honor the physics in the whole frequency range. We further generalize the Geertsma–Smit equations to the case of general boundary conditions other than the open-pore interface. At the seismic band, it is shown that the lossless (elastic) expression based on the Gassmann P-wave impedance is the reflection coefficient to use for practical applications. It is inferred that interpretations based on the frequency dependency of these approximations can be misleading, since this dependency does not provide a suitable description of the physics. Thermoelastic attenuation is similar to wave-induced fluid-flow attenuation (mesoscopic loss) due to conversion of the fast P wave to the slow (Biot) P mode. In the thermoelastic case, the P - and S -wave energies are lost because of thermal diffusion. The thermal mode is diffusive at low frequencies and wave-like at high frequencies, in the same manner as the Biot slow mode. Therefore, at low frequencies, that is, neglecting the inertial terms, a mathematical analogy can be established between the diffusion equations in poroelasticity and thermoelasticity. We study thermoelastic dissipation for spherical and cylindrical cavities (or pores) in 2-D and 3-D, respectively, and a finely layered system, where, in the latter case, only the Grüneisen ratio is allowed to vary. The results show typical quality-factor relaxation curves similar to Zener peaks. There is no dissipation when the radius of the pores tends to zero and the layers have the same properties. Although idealized, these canonical solutions are useful to study the physics of thermoelasticity and test numerical algorithm codes that simulate thermoelastic dissipation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The absolute permeability of rock depends on several factors, including porosity, ϕ , the geometry of the pore network (tortuosity), and the grain geometry, dimension and composition. The mineralogical composition plays an important role, mostly with respect to clay, which involves several components including illite, smectite, kaolinite and chlorite. The presence of quartz and feldspar increases permeability, while clay minerals and calcite tend to have the opposite effect. Essentially, permeability decreases with a smaller grain radius, increasing tortuosity of the pore space and decreasing porosity. As the specific surface area of the pores increases, permeability decreases. Here, we compare four expressions for permeability based on clay content, grain dimension, tortuosity and mineral composition. All the expressions somehow contain the Kozeny–Carman (KC) factor ϕ 3 / (1 - ϕ) 2 , which is obtained on physical grounds, and relies on fitting parameters related to the geometric characteristics of the rock and its composition. The Herron model is based on geochemical mineralogy composition. Despite the highly idealized parameters on which these models are based, the results support the predictive power of the Kozeny–Carman equation, provided that proper calibration is performed. The present study evaluates the capacity of the Boom Clay as a host rock for disposal purposes, more precisely its seismic characterization, which may assess its long-term performance to store radioactive wastes. Although the formation is relatively uniform and homogeneous, there are embedded thin layers of septaria (carbonates) that may affect the integrity of the Boom Clay. Therefore, it is essential to locate these geobodies. The seismic data to characterize the Boom Clay has been acquired at the Kruibeke test site. The inversion, which allowed us to obtain the anisotropy parameters and seismic velocities of the clay, is complemented with further information such as log and laboratory data. The attenuation properties have been estimated from equivalent formations (having similar composition and seismic velocities). The inversion yields quite consistent results although the symmetry of the medium is unusual but physically possible, since the anisotropy parameter ∊ is negative. According to a timedomain calculation of the energy velocity at four frequency bands up to 900 Hz, velocity increases with frequency, a behaviour described by the Zener model. Then, we use this model to describe anisotropy and anelasticity that are implemented into the equation of motion to compute synthetic seismograms in the space-time domain. The technique is based on memory variables and the Fourier pseudospectral method. We have computed reflection coefficients of the septaria thin layer. At normal incidence, the P-wave coefficient vanishes at specific thicknesses of the layer and there is no conversion to the S wave. For example, calculations at 600 Hz show that for thicknesses of 1 m the septarium can be detected more easily since the amplitudes are higher (nearly 0.8). Converted PS waves have a high amplitude at large offsets (between 30° and 80°) and can be useful to identify the target on this basis. Moreover, we have investigated the effect of septaria embedded in the Boom Clay with several simulations, by considering a lateral partial continuity of the calcareous thin inclusions. The simulations with layers of calcareous material show continuity of the reflections even when the percentage of carbonate within the layer is very small (5-15 per cent), while for low content of the calcareous material, isolated septaria boulders generate diffraction events. Abstract: The injection of CO2 in saline aquifers and depleted hydrocarbon wells is one solution to avoid the emission of that greenhouse gas to the atmosphere. Carbon taxes can be avoided if geological sequestration can efficiently be performed from technical and economic perspectives. For this purpose, we present a combined rock-physics methodology of electromagnetic (EM) and seismic wave propagation for the detection and monitoring of CO2 in crosswell experiments. First, we obtain the electrical conductivity and seismic velocities as a function of saturation, porosity, permeability and clay content, based on the CRIM and White models, respectively. Then, we obtain a conductivity–velocity relation. This type of relations is useful when some rock properties can be more easily measured than other properties. Finally, we compute crosswell EM and seismic profiles using direct modeling techniques. P- and S-wave attenuation is included in the seismic simulation by means of White''s mesoscopic theory. The modeling methodology is useful to perform sensitivity analyses and it is the basis for performing traveltime EM and seismic tomography and obtain reliable estimations of the saturation of carbon dioxide. In both cases, it is essential to correctly pick the first arrivals, particularly in the EM case where diffusion wavelength is large compared to the source–receiver distance. The methodology is applied to CO2 injection in a sandstone aquifer with shale intrusions, embedded in a shale formation. The EM traveltimes are smaller after the injection due to the higher resistivity caused by the presence of carbon dioxide, while the effect is opposite in the seismic case, where water replaced by gas decreases the seismic velocity. We estimate the quality factor ( Q) from seismic reflections by using a tomographic inversion algorithm based on the frequency-shift method. The algorithm is verified with a synthetic case and is applied to offshore data, acquired at western Svalbard, to detect the presence of bottom-simulating reflectors (BSR) and gas hydrates. An array of 20 ocean-bottom seismographs has been used. The combined use of traveltime and attenuation tomography provides a 3D velocity– Q cube, which can be used to map the spatial distribution of the gas-hydrate concentration and free-gas saturation. In general, high P-wave velocity and quality factor indicate the presence of solid hydrates and low P-wave velocity and quality factor correspond to free-gas bearing sediments. The Q-values vary between 200 and 25, with higher values (150–200) above the BSR and lower values below the BSR (25–40). These results seem to confirm that hydrates cement the grains, and attenuation decreases with increasing hydrate concentration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We estimate the concentration of gas hydrate and free gas at an area located to the north of the Knipovich Ridge (western Svalbard margin). The method is based on P-wave velocities computed by reflection tomography applied to multicomponent ocean-bottom seismometer data. The tomographic velocity field is fitted to theoretical velocities obtained from a poro-elastic model based on a Biot-type approach (the interaction between the rock frame, gas hydrate and fluid is modelled from first physical principles). We obtain average hydrate concentrations of 7% and maximum free-gas saturations of 0.4% and 9%, depending on the saturation model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We estimate the concentration of gas hydrate at the Mallik 2L-38 research site using P- and S-wave velocities obtained from well logging and vertical seismic profiles (VSP). The theoretical velocities are obtained from a generalization of Gassmann''s modulus to three phases (rock frame, gas hydrate and fluid). The dry-rock moduli are estimated from the log profiles, in sections where the rock is assumed to be fully saturated with water. We obtain hydrate concentrations up to 75%, average values of 37% and 21% from the VSP P- and S-wave velocities, respectively, and 60% and 57% from the sonic-log P- and S-wave velocities, respectively. The above averages are similar to estimations obtained from hydrate dissociation modeling and Archie methods. We characterize the seismic response of Lake Vostok, an Antarctic subglacial lake located at nearly 4 km depth below the ice sheet. This study is relevant for the determination of the location and morphology of subglacial lakes. The characterization requires the design of a methodology based on rock physics and numerical modelling of wave propagation. The methodology involves rock-physics models of the shallow layer (firn), the ice sheet and the lake sediments, numerical simulation of synthetic seismograms, ray tracing, τ– p transforms, and AVA analysis, based on the theoretical reflection coefficients. The modelled reflection seismograms show a set of straight events (refractions through the firn and top-ice layer) and the two reflection events associated with the top and bottom of the lake. Theoretical AVA analysis of these reflections indicates that, at near offsets, the PP-wave anomaly is negative for the ice/water interface and constant for the water/sediment interface. This behaviour is shown by AVA analysis of the synthetic data set. This study shows that subglacial lakes can be identified by using seismic methods. ABSTRACT We obtain the wave velocities and quality factors of gas-hydrate-bearing sediments as a function of pore pressure, temperature, frequency and partial saturation. The model is based on a Biot-type three-phase theory that considers the existence of two solids (grains and gas hydrate) and a fluid mixture. Attenuation is described with the constant-Q model and viscodynamic functions to model the high-frequency behaviour. We apply a uniform gas/water mixing law that satisfies Wood's and Voigt's averages at low and high frequencies, respectively. The acoustic model is calibrated to agree with the patchy-saturation theory at high frequencies (White's model). Pressure effects are accounted by using an effective stress law for the dry-rock moduli and permeabilities. The dry-rock moduli of the sediment are calibrated with data from the Cascadia margin. Moreover, we calculate the depth of the bottom simulating reflector (BSR) below the sea floor as a function of sea-floor depth, geothermal gradient below the sea floor, and temperature at the sea floor. The exploration and exploitation of shale oil is an important aspect in the oil industry. Seismic properties and well‐log data are essential to establish wave‐propagation models. Specifically, the description of wave dispersion and attenuation under complex geological conditions needs proper lithological and petrophysical information. This complex physical mechanism has to be considered if a traditional modeling approach is adopted. In this sense, machine learning (ML) techniques provide new possibilities for this purpose. We compare two deep‐neural‐network (DNN)‐based wave propagation models. In the first (pure data‐driven), a DNN is trained to connect seismic attributes, such as wave velocities, to multivariate functions of rock‐physics properties. By training DNNs with different initial parameters, the uncertainty of the proposed method can be quantified. The second method assumes the form of the wave equations. Then, the elastic constants of the constitutive relations are predicted by DNNs. The resulting dynamical equations describe the dispersion and attenuation and wavefield simulations can be performed to obtain more information. On the basis of a test, the two kinds of wave‐propagation models yield acceptable estimations of the seismic properties, with the second approach showing a broader application because the DNN is trained without S wave data. The methodologies illustrate that the new wave‐propagation model based on ML has high precision and can be general in terms of rheological description. Deciphering how the Antarctic Ice Sheet has responded to past climate warming is critical to understanding its sensitivity and role in current and future climate change. In this context, knowledge of the evolution of the Antarctic Ice Sheet in catchments with large potential sea-level contributions plays a key role. The Sabrina Coast of East Antarctica lies seaward of the second largest, but least known, subglacial basin on Earth, the Aurora Subglacial Basin. It is part of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet and drains to the Sabrina Coast via the Totten Glacier, the third largest drainage system in East Antarctica. Our refined, comprehensive seismic stratigraphic analysis of a large multichannel seismic data set collected in this sector of the Antarctic margin shows that sediments deposited on the continental slope and rise of the Sabrina Coast retain a well-preserved record of variations in glacial and oceanographic dynamics. Isobath and isopach maps evidence a complex, asymmetric evolution of the Sabrina slope and rise, with the western sector being the main sediment depocenter since the emplacement of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, as indicated by the up to 4-km-thick glacial-related sequences and inferred sedimentation rates of up to 300 m/m.y. However, significant sediment accumulation also occurs in the eastern area, particularly in the western levees of the canyons. Our findings highlight the potential of this region for deep ocean drilling that will provide an unprecedented history of the dynamics of the marine-based ice sheet in the Aurora Subglacial Basin and its sensitivity to climate change under different background climate conditions. Geological storage is one of the solutions to avoid the emission of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. This process requires a careful monitoring of the CO 2 bubble, which can be performed by means of seismic and electromagnetic (EM) methods, on the basis of seismic velocity, attenuation and electrical conductivity contrasts before and after the injection. A successful monitoring depends on many factors, for instance the depth and properties of the reservoir. To test the feasibility of detecting the gas, we have performed cross-well seismic and EM tomographic inversions on a synthetic data set generated from a realistic aquifer partially saturated with CO 2 . We use two different algorithms based on traveltime picks. The method is novel regarding the EM inversion. Besides seismic velocity and conductivity, we have also obtained the seismic quality factor by performing attenuation tomography based on the frequency-shift approach. The RMS differences between the inverted and true initial models show that the methodology (and the adopted acquisition geometry) allows us to obtain reliable results which agree well with the true petrophysical model. Moreover, we have used a forward optimisation method to recover saturation, porosity and clay content from the tomographic seismic velocities, Q values and electric conductivity, with errors less than 15%. We present a detailed approach to implement a moment-tensor point source to compute displacements, particle velocities and accelerations using direct grid methods. Here, the wave modeling algorithm is based on pseudospectral methods to compute the partial derivatives. A comparison to the analytical solution in the 3D acoustic case verifies the discrete implementation of the source in the mesh. Then, the more general 3D elastic case is illustrated and simulations, with and without free surface, are performed that can be used as a reference solution for other grid methods. We present a new petro-elastical and numerical-simulation methodology to compute synthetic seismograms for reservoirs subject to CO2 sequestration. The petro-elastical equations model the seismic properties of reservoir rocks saturated with CO2, methane, oil and brine. The gas properties are obtained from the van der Waals equation and we take into account the absorption of gas by oil and brine, as a function of the in situ pore pressure and temperature. The dry-rock bulk and shear moduli can be obtained either by calibration from real data or by using rock-physics models based on the Hertz-Mindlin and Hashin-Shtrikman theories. Mesoscopic attenuation due to fluids effects is quantified by using White's model of patchy saturation, and the wet-rock velocities are calculated with Gassmann equations by using an effective fluid modulus to describe the velocities predicted by White's model. The simulations are performed with a poro-viscoelastic modeling code based on Biot's theory, where viscoelasticity is described by generalizing the solid/fluid coupling modulus to a relaxation function. Using the pseudo-spectral method, which allows general material variability, a complete and accurate characterization of the reservoir can be obtained. The presence of gas hydrate in oceanic sediments is mostly identified by bottom-simulating reflectors (BSRs), reflection events with reversed polarity following the trend of the seafloor. Attempts to quantify the amount of gas hydrate present in oceanic sediments have been based mainly on the presence or absence of a BSR and its relative amplitude. Recent studies have shown that a BSR is not a necessary criterion for the presence of gas hydrates, but rather its presence depends on the type of sediments and thein situconditions. The influence of hydrate on the physical properties of sediments overlying the BSR is determined by the elastic properties of their constituents and on sediment microstructure. In this context several approaches have been developed to predict the physical properties of sediments, and thereby quantify the amount of gas/gas hydrate present from observed deviations of these properties from those predicted for sediments without gas hydrate.We tested four models: the empirical weighted equation (WE); the three-phase effective-medium theory (TPEM); the three-phase Biot theory (TPB) and the differential effective-medium theory (DEM). We compared these models for a range of variables (porosity and clay content) using standard values for physical parameters. The comparison shows that all the models predict sediment properties comparable to field values except for the WE model at lower porosities and the TPB model at higher porosities. The models differ in the variation of velocity with porosity and clay content. The variation of velocity with hydrate saturation is also different, although the range is similar. We have used these models to predict velocities for field data sets from sediment sections with and without gas hydrates. The first is from the Mallik 2L–38 well, Mackenzie Delta, Canada, and the second is from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 164 on Blake Ridge. Both data sets haveVp andVs information along with the composition and porosity of the matrix. Models are considered successful if predictions from bothVp andVs match hydrate saturations inferred from other data. Three of the models predict consistent hydrate saturations of 60–80 per cent from bothVp andVs from log and vertical seismic profiling data for the Mallik 2L-38 well data set, but the TPEM model predicts 20 per cent higher saturations, as does the DEM model with a clay–water starting medium. For the clay-rich sediments of Blake Ridge, the DEM, TPEM and WE models predict 10–20 per cent hydrate saturation fromVp data, comparable to that inferred from resistivity data. The hydrate saturation predicted by the TPB model fromVp is higher. UsingVs data, the DEM and TPEM models predict very low or zero hydrate saturation while the TPB and WE models predict hydrate saturation very much higher than those predicted fromVp data. We design a numerical algorithm for wave simulation in anelastic media in the presence of free surface, which can be used to model seismic waves at the Earth''s surface and ultrasonic waves in heterogeneous materials. The stress–strain relation is based on the Kelvin–Voigt mechanical model, which has the advantage of not requiring additional field variables. The model requires two anelastic parameters and twice the spatial derivatives of the lossless case. The high-frequency components of the wave field are more attenuated than the low-frequency components, with the attenuation factors being approximately proportional to the square of the frequency. The modeling simulates 3-D waves by using the Fourier and Chebyshev methods to compute the spatial derivatives along the horizontal and vertical directions, respectively. We stretch the mesh in the vertical direction to increase the minimum grid spacing and reduce the computational cost. Instabilities of the Chebyshev differential operator due to the implementation of the free-surface boundary conditions are solved with a characteristic approach, where the characteristic variables are evaluated at the source central frequency. The results of the modeling are verified by comparisons to the analytical solutions for Lamb''s problem and propagation in unbounded homogeneous media. Electrical, seismic, and electromagnetic methods can be used for noninvasive determination of subsurface physical and chemical properties. In particular, we consider the evaluation of water salinity and the detection of surface contaminants. Most of the relevant properties are represented by electric conductivity, P-wave velocity, and dielectric permittivity. Hence, it is important to obtain relationships between these measurable physical quantities and soil composition, saturation, and frequency. Conductivity in the geoelectric frequency range is obtained with Pride''s model for a porous rock. (The model considers salinity and permeability.) White''s model of patchy saturation is used to calculate the P-wave velocity and attenuation. Four cases are considered: light nonaqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) pockets in water, dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) pockets in water, LNAPL pockets in air, and DNAPL pockets in air. The size of the pockets (or pools), with respect to the signal wavelength, is modeled by the theory. The electromagnetic properties in the GPR frequency range are obtained by using the Hanai–Bruggeman equation for two solids (sand and clay grains) and two fluids (LNAPL or DNAPL in water or air). The Hanai–Bruggeman exponent (1/3 for spherical particles) is used as a fitting parameter and evaluated for a sand/clay mixture saturated with water.Pride''s model predicts increasing conductivity for increasing salinity and decreasing permeability. The best-fit exponent of the Hanai–Bruggeman equation for a sand/clay mixture saturated with water is 0.61, indicating that the shape of the grains has a significant influence on the electromagnetic properties. At radar frequencies, it is possible to distinguish between a water-saturated medium and a NAPL-saturated medium, but LNAPL- and DNAPL-saturated media have very similar electromagnetic properties. The type of contaminant can be better distinguished from the acoustic properties. P-wave velocity increases with frequency, and has dissimilar behaviour for wet and dry soils. P-wave conversion to slow diffusion (Biot) modes at mesoscopic (small-scale) inhomogeneities in porous media is believed to be the most important attenuation mechanisms at seismic frequencies. This study considers three periodic thin layers saturated with gas, oil, and water, respectively, a realistic scenario in hydrocarbon reservoirs, and perform finite-element numerical simulations to obtain the wave velocities and quality factors along the direction perpendicular to layering. The results are validated by comparison to the Norris-Cavallini analytical solution, constituting a cross-check for both theory and numerical simulations. The approach is not restricted to partial saturation but also applies to relevant properties in reservoir geophysics, such as porosity and permeability heterogeneities. This paper considers two cases, namely, the same rock skeleton and different fluids, and the same fluid and different dry-rock properties. Unlike the two-layer case (two fluids), the results show two relaxation peaks and the agreement between numerical and analytical solutions is excellent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT: In many cases, the seismic response of bottom‐simulating reflectors is characterised by low frequencies called “low‐frequency shadow”. Generally, this phenomenon is interpreted as attenuation due to partial saturation with free gas. Actually, this frequency loss may have multiple causes, with a normal moveout stretch as a possible candidate. To analyse this phenomenon, we compute synthetic seismograms by assuming a lossy bottom‐simulating layer, with varying quality factor and thickness, bounded by the upper hydrate‐brine/gas‐brine and lower gas‐brine/brine interfaces. First, we estimate the shift of the centroid frequency of the power spectrum as a function of the travelled distance of the seismic pulse. Then, we perform one‐dimensional numerical experiments to quantify the loss of frequency of the seismic event below the bottom‐simulating reflector as a function of the quality factor of the bottom‐simulating layer and its thickness (due to wave interference). Then, we compute shot gathers to obtain the stacked section, with and without the normal moveout stretch correction and with and without the presence of wave attenuation in the bottom‐simulating layer. The results indicate that the low‐frequency shadow due to the normal moveout stretch is stronger than that due to attenuation and may constitute a false indicator of the presence of gas. In fact, often, the low‐frequency shadow overlies events with higher frequencies, in contradiction with the physics of wave propagation. This is particularly evident when the low‐frequency shadow is so extensive that the presence of high frequencies below cannot be justified by the acquisition geometry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Backus and Wyllie equations are used to obtain average seismic velocities at zero and infinite frequencies, respectively. Here, these equations are generalized to obtain averages of the seismic quality factor (inversely proportional to attenuation). The results indicate that the Wyllie velocity is higher than the corresponding Backus quantity, as expected, since the ray velocity is a high-frequency limit. On the other hand, the Wyllie quality factor is higher than the Backus one, following the velocity trend, i.e., the higher the velocity (the stiffer the medium), the higher the attenuation. Since the quality factor can be related to properties such as porosity, permeability, and fluid viscosity, these averages can be useful for evaluating reservoir properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main objective of this paper is to use a flow simulator to represent the CO storage and combine it with a wave propagation simulator in order to obtain synthetic seismograms qualitatively matching time-lapse real field data. The procedure is applied to the Utsira formation at Sleipner field. The field data at the site available to us is a collection of seismic sections (time-lapse seismics) used to monitor the CO storage. An estimate of the CO injection rate and the location of the injection point are known. Using these data, we build a geological model, including intramudstone layers with openings, whose coordinates are defined by performing a qualitative match of the field seismic data. The flow simulator parameters and the petrophysical properties are updated to obtain CO saturation maps, including CO plumes, so that the synthetic seismic images resemble the real data. The geological model is based on a porous-media constitutive equation. It considers a poroelastic description of the Utsira formation (a shaly sandstone), based on porosity and clay content, and takes into account the variation of the properties with pore pressure and fluid saturation. Moreover, the model considers the geometrical features of the formations, including the presence of shale seals and fractures. We also assume fractal variations of the petrophysical properties. The numerical simulation of the CO-brine flow is based on the Black-Oil formulation, which uses the pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) behavior as a simplified thermodynamic model. The corresponding equations are solved using a finite difference IMPES formulation. Using the resulting saturation and pore-pressure maps, we determine an equivalent viscoelastic medium at the macroscale, formulated in the space-frequency domain. Wave attenuation and velocity dispersion, caused by heterogeneities formed of gas patches, are described with White's mesoscopic model. The viscoelastic wave equation is solved in the space-frequency domain for a collection of frequencies of interest using a finite-element iterative domain decomposition algorithm. The space-time solution is recovered by a discrete inverse Fourier transform, allowing us to obtain our synthetic seismograms. In the numerical examples, we determine a set of flow and petrophysical parameters allowing us to obtain synthetic seismograms resembling actual field data. In particular, this approach yields CO accumulations below the mudstone layers and synthetic seismograms which successfully reproduce the typical pushdown effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
