- Abstract
In statistics, samples are drawn from a population in a data-generating process (DGP). Standard errors measure the uncertainty in estimates of population parameters. In science, evidence is generated to test hypotheses in an evidence-generating process (EGP). We claim that EGP variation across researchers adds uncertainty—nonstandard errors (NSEs). We study NSEs by letting 164 teams test the same hypotheses on the same data. NSEs turn out to be sizable, but smaller for more reproducible or higher rated research. Adding peer-review stages reduces NSEs. We further find that this type of uncertainty is underestimated by participants.

In statistics, samples are drawn from a population in a data- generating process (DGP). Standard errors measure the uncer- tainty in sample estimates of population parameters. In sci- ence, evidence is generated to test hypotheses in an evidence- generating process (EGP). We claim that EGP variation across researchers adds uncertainty: non-standard errors. To study them, we let 164 teams test six hypotheses on the same sam- ple. We find that non-standard errors are sizeable, on par with standard errors. Their size (i) co-varies only weakly with team merits, reproducibility, or peer rating, (ii) declines significantly after peer-feedback, and (iii) is underestimated by participants.

- Abstract
Summary: Corporate income taxation and prudential regulation are complementary instruments for public policy in banking markets. The common deductibility of interest payments induces debt bias and causes banks to be excessively levered. A reduction in debt-bias can achieve two goals at the same time: It enhances resiliency by lowering the cost of equity and it enhances the global competitiveness of banks by strengthening their capital structure. Moreover, even reforms that are fiscally neutral in the short run will reduce the fiscal burden on bank rescue operations in the long-run.

The present study contributes to the ongoing debate on possible costs and benefis of leverage requirements. In particular, we run two series of electronic call auctions with heterogeneous agents in the laboratory where we change the leverage bounds as a treatment variable. Over the two treatments, participants in our experiment realise about forty percent of the possible gains from trade. We show, in accordance the theory, leverage bounds do affect the efficiency of the market and the price of the asset.

- Abstract
We find strong evidence that measures of social responsibility contribute to increasing the resilience of banks. This finding holds when social responsibility is measured by aggregated ESG scores provided by Thomson Reuters, both according to their older Asset 4 categorization and to the reformed ESG Refinitiv classification, and resilience is proxied by various measures of systemic and systematic risk. The results hold on the level of subcategories of the ESG pillars, where we find that, particularly, variables related to the long-term perspective enhance resilience. Moreover, in our international study, we find significant transatlantic differences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This questionnaire survey of fund managers in the United States, Germany and Switzerland documents a distinctly positive influence of bonus payments on investment behavior on both sides of the Atlantic. Higher bonus payments are significantly related to higher working effort but not to risk taking. They also seem to induce fund managers to rely more on fundamental information. Findings within regions are confirmed by Trans-Atlantic evidence as US fund managers receive larger bonuses but also show the effects to a higher degree. The effects documented are stronger for relative than for absolute performance assessment.

In the experimental scenario several agents repeatedly invest in n (n>2) state-specific assets. The evolutionarily stable and equilibrium (Blume and Easley, 1992) portfolio for this situation requires to distribute funds according to the constant probabilities of the various states. The different treatments endow none, one, three, or all subjects in groups of eight investors each with probability information. Will investments follow the theoretical benchmark or the 1=n-heuristic of equal investments in all assets? Further, will agents with probability information be asked and paid for advice on how to invest? Although investment does not converge as predicted, portfolios of informed agents reflect the probabilities of states, and even uninformed agents do not invest according to the 1=n-heuristic. Advice is demanded and readily paid for. Surprisingly, clients do not always follow the recommendation. Competition among advisors reduces their fees as expected.

In a market with stochastic demand at most one seller can acquire costly information about demand. Other sellers entertain idiosyncratic beliefs about the market demand and the probability that an informed seller is trading in the market. These idiosyncratic beliefs co-evolve with the potential insiders inclination to acquire information. True demand expectations are not evolutionarily stable when beliefs, via revelation, can be used to commit to more aggressive behavior. The commitment effect fades away in large markets and has the same direction for both strategic substitutes and complements. Whether one observes an insider, in the long run, depends on information costs. For strategic substitutes insider activity benefits the whole population whereas the uninformed sellers could gain even more than the insider.

This paper analyzes the behaviour and motivation of fund managers in foreign exchange markets reflected in questionnaire evidence. We find that fund managers and FX dealers differ significantly. Fund managers rely more on fundamentals, basically due to their longer forecasting horizons, and reject non-fundamental influences on exchange rates more than FX dealers. However, neither can fund managers be considered as pure fundamentalists. Non-fundamentalist positions markedly influence short-term decision-making. They inspire ambivalent views about market imperfections and these views seem to become stronger over time. This latter change counterbalances the strengthening fundamental influences resulting from the rise of fund managers.

- Abstract
Little data exist regarding the potential of external stents to mitigate long-term disease progression in saphenous vein grafts. We investigated the effect of external stents on the progression of saphenous vein graft disease. A total of 184 patients undergoing isolated coronary artery bypass grafting, using an internal thoracic artery graft and at least 2 additional saphenous vein grafts, were enrolled in 14 European centers. One saphenous vein graft was randomized to an external stent, and 1 nonstented saphenous vein graft served as the control. The primary end point was the saphenous vein graft Fitzgibbon patency scale assessed by angiography, and the secondary end point was saphenous vein graft intimal hyperplasia assessed by intravascular ultrasound in a prespecified subgroup at 2 years. Angiography was completed in 128 patients and intravascular ultrasound in the entire prespecified cohort (n = 51) at 2 years. Overall patency rates were similar between stented and nonstented saphenous vein grafts (78.3% vs 82.2%, P =.43). However, the Fitzgibbon patency scale was significantly improved in stented versus nonstented saphenous vein grafts, with Fitzgibbon patency scale I, II, and III rates of 66.7% versus 54.9%, 27.8% versus 34.3%, and 5.5% versus 10.8%, respectively (odds ratio, 2.02; P =.03). Fitzgibbon patency scale was inversely related to saphenous vein graft minimal lumen diameter, with Fitzgibbon patency scale I, II, and III saphenous vein grafts having an average minimal lumen diameter of 2.62 mm, 1.98 mm, and 1.32 mm, respectively (P <.05). Externally stented saphenous vein grafts also showed significant reductions in mean intimal hyperplasia area (22.5%; P <.001) and thickness (23.5%; P <.001). Two years after coronary artery bypass grafting, external stenting improves Fitzgibbon patency scales of saphenous vein grafts and significantly reduces intimal hyperplasia area and thickness. Whether this will eventually lead to improved long-term patency is still unknown. [Display omitted] Left: Basic design of the study. Center: Primary and secondary end points. Right: Main findings. - Abstract
BACKGROUND: Despite chronic systemic anticoagulation, advanced heart failure patients treated with a continuous-flow left ventricular assist device (LVAD) remain at risk for pump thrombosis. Pump thrombosis may initially be suspected in the setting of clinical and biochemical evidence for intravascular hemolysis, putatively related to shear stress on red blood cells propelled through a partially occluded pump. Limited data exist to guide management in these patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: We present a series of 8 LVAD patients who presented with intravascular hemolysis secondary to pump thrombosis who were treated with intraventricular thrombolytic therapy. In 3 patients, thrombolytic therapy led to complete and lasting resolution of hemolysis, suggesting successful dissolution of pump thrombus. In the remaining 5 patients, thrombolytic therapy ultimately failed to halt or reverse pump thrombosis and hemolysis: 1 patient required emergent pump exchange, 2 patients progressed to cardiogenic shock and died, 1 patient suffered a debilitating stroke after which care was withdrawn, and 1 patient underwent cardiac transplantation. CONCLUSIONS: In the setting of LVAD thrombosis, thrombolytic therapy is an alternate treatment strategy in a subset of patients. Candidacy for this alternate procedure must carefully weigh the risks of complications, including hemorrhage and thromboembolism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: We explore the inter-temporal effects of the pool externalities caused by imperfect screening in competitive credit markets. We find that imperfect screening may, depending on the parameters of the model, generate excessive screening, inefficient duplication of screening or screening cycles. Whenever screening cycles occur they are manifestations of either socially excessive or insufficient screening. We present a full equilibrium characterization and a welfare analysis. The implementation of socially optimal lending decisions requires communication across lenders (i.e. information sharing), which decentralized markets typically cannot achieve. Objective: Approximately 50% of aortocoronary saphenous vein grafts are occluded 10 years after coronary revascularization surgery. Intimal hyperplasia, a critical component in saphenous vein graft failure, is defined by vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation, which is mediated in part by βγ subunits of heterotrimeric G proteins (G
βγ ) and downstream effectors such as mitogen-activated protein kinases. A peptide consisting of the carboxyl-terminus of the β-adrenergic receptor kinase (βARKct) binds Gβγ , thereby inhibiting Gβγ signaling. Utilizing a recombinant adenovirus containing the coding sequence for the βARKct peptide (AdβARKct), this study investigates whether treatment of the vein graft with AdβARKct reduces intimal hyperplasia in a large animal model of aortocoronary saphenous vein graft intimal hyperplasia. Methods: Twenty-seven dogs (27-32 kg) underwent aortocoronary bypass grafting to the left anterior descending artery using autologous saphenous vein. Vein grafts were treated with saline (n = 8), an empty adenovirus (n = 8), or AdβARKct (n = 8). A subset of dogs (n = 3) were sacrificed on postoperative day 7 and βARKct expression confirmed by Northern blotting. Results: Arteriograms performed on postoperative day 90 confirmed that saphenous vein grafts were patent. At postoperative day 90, AdβARKct-treated grafts demonstrated reduced intimal area compared to empty virus and saline treated animals (P < .05). Additionally, AdβARKct treatment of isolated vascular smooth muscle cells in vitro inhibited mitogen-activated protein kinase activation and decreased overall vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that βARKct expression in aortocoronary saphenous vein grafts reduces intimal hyperplasia and decreases vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation in vitro via inhibition of Gβγ -mediated mitogen-activated protein kinase activation. Modulation of Gβγ via βARKct may represent a novel therapy to reduce intimal hyperplasia and saphenous vein graft failure. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]- Published

Objectives: Fifty percent of human aortocoronary saphenous vein grafts are occluded after 10 years. Intimal hyperplasia is an initial step in graft occlusion and consists of vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation. Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase and its downstream regulator, the inositol 3-phosphatase PTEN (phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome 10), are important regulators of vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation, migration, and cell death. This study tests whether overexpression of PTEN in aortocoronary saphenous vein grafts can reduce intimal hyperplasia. Methods: Adult dogs underwent aortocoronary bypass grafting to the left anterior descending artery by using the autologous saphenous vein. Saphenous vein grafts were treated with phosphate-buffered saline (n = 9), empty adenovirus (n = 8), or adenovirus encoding for PTEN (n = 8). Arteriography at 30 and 90 days assessed saphenous vein graft patency. A subset received saphenous vein grafts treated with a marker transgene (β-galactosidase, n = 3), empty adenovirus (n = 4), or adenovirus encoding for PTEN (n = 4) and were killed on postoperative day 3 to confirm expression. Vascular smooth muscle cells were isolated from canine saphenous vein infected with adenovirus encoding for PTEN, and immunoblotting and proliferation assays were performed. Results: Saphenous vein graft transgene expression was confirmed by means of immunohistochemistry, immunoblotting, and polymerase chain reaction. Arteriograms revealed all saphenous vein grafts to be patent. Saphenous vein grafts treated with adenovirus encoding for PTEN demonstrated reduced intimal area compared with those treated with empty adenovirus and phosphate-buffered saline (1.39 ± 0.11 vs 2.35 ± 0.3 and 2.57 ± 0.4 mm
2 , P < .05), and the intima/media ratio was lower in saphenous vein grafts treated with adenovirus encoding for PTEN (0.50 ± 0.05 vs 1.43 ± 0.18 and 1.11 ± 0.14, P < .005). PTEN overexpression in vascular smooth muscle cells inhibited platelet-derived growth factor-induced phosphorylation of Akt, a downstream effector of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase. PTEN-treated vascular smooth muscle cells demonstrated decreased basal, platelet-derived growth factor-stimulated, and serum-stimulated proliferation. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that PTEN overexpression in aortocoronary saphenous vein grafts reduces intimal hyperplasia. The mechanism of this antiproliferative effect in vascular smooth muscle cells is likely due to inhibition of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase signaling through Akt, with resultant decreases in vascular smooth muscle cell growth and survival. Therefore modulation of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase pathway through PTEN overexpression might represent a novel therapy to prevent saphenous vein graft intimal hyperplasia after coronary artery bypass grafting. 45. Did the Basel Process of capital regulation enhance the resiliency of European banks?

- Abstract
This paper analyses the evolution of the safety and soundness of the European banking sector during the various stages of the Basel process of capital regulation. We document the evolution of various measures of systemic risk as the Basel process unfolds. Most strikingly we find that the exposure to systemic risk as measured by SRISK has been steeply rising for the highest quintile, moderately rising for the second quintile, and remaining roughly stationary for the remaining three quintiles of listed European banks. This observation suggests that during the Basel process, systemic risk has been contained for the majority of European banks, but not for the largest and riskiest institutions. When analyzing the sources of systemic risk we find compelling evidence that the increase in exposure to systemic risk (SRISK) is tied to the implementation of internal models for determining credit risk, as well as market risk. Based on this evidence, the sub-prime crisis found especially the largest and more systemic banks ill-prepared and lacking resiliency. This condition has been aggravated during the European sovereign crisis. The Banking Union has not restored aggregate resiliency to pre-crisis levels. Finally, low-interest rates considerably affect the contribution to systemic risk, particularly for the riskier banks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

46. Screening, cross-border banking, and the allocation of credit

GEHRIG, THOMAS
- Abstract
The author analyses competition among banks when banks can use creditworthiness tests that generate (imperfect) information about borrowers. When banks can strategically adjust the test characteristics by investing resources in the screening technology, he shows that credit markets are not easily contestable. An increase in the intensity of competition may have few effects on incumbents» conduct and overall market shares. Moreover, conditions are provided under which screening efforts are reduced by competition. In such situations the quality of the overall loan portfolio declines and the economy incurs higher aggregate risk due to the lower quality of banks» information production. The welfare gains from integrating fragmented loan markets can actually be negative.
