2. Effectiveness of Plaque Removal Using Different Toothbrushes in Children - A Comparative Study

Abstract

Background: Effective plaque control is essential for improved oral health. Advancements in mechanical plaque removal using toothbrushes still continue. One such sophisticated intervention is the app-based toothbrush, a new innovative technology that helps to track the child’s brushing habits. Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the plaque removal efficacy of three different toothbrushes in children aged 6–8 years. Methods: A randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted among primary school children with decayed missing filled teeth (dmft) score of ≤2. Baseline plaque score was collected using Turesky modification of the Quigley and Hein Index 1 week after oral prophylaxis. Children were randomly divided into three groups. Group I received conventional toothbrush (n = 25), group II received powered toothbrush (n = 25), and group III received app-based toothbrush (n = 25). Post-intervention plaque score, toothbrush wear and bite mark scores were done at the 15th, 30th, 45th and 90th day. Participant’s opinion on their toothbrushes was evaluated using a questionnaire. Results and Conclusion: App-based toothbrush showed maximum plaque reduction followed by powered and conventional toothbrush. Abstract

ABSTRACTIn this study, we investigated specific components and intra-seasonal dynamic processes that play pivotal roles in the East Antarctica’s central Dronning Maud Land (cDML) region. The present study focuses on harnessing the potential of a multispectral sensor-based Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for cryosphere studies over the polar ice sheet in cDML (Schirmacher Oasis) region of East Antarctica, conducted as part of the 42nd and 43rd Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica (ISEA), under the aegis of National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, during austral summer period from 2022 to 2023. The surveyed area (~100 acres) encompasses a segment of the ice sheet frontal edge outer margin, situated near the Maitri Indian research base at Schirmacheroasen, and includes a melt pond/supraglacial lake. The results indicate that the ice sheet frontal edge segment experienced a decrease in elevation of 0.25 meters with a total mass reduction of 13.6 kilotons during one-week period. The supraglacial lake accumulated meltwater with an average depth ranging from 0.25 to 1.6 meters, covering an area spanning from 9.1 × 103 square meters to 24.7 × 103 square meters. The ultra-high resolution multispectral UAV data also revealed dynamic changes in various cryo-facies classes, including water bodies/meltwater, frozen meltwater, dry and wet snow, debris/bare ice, and bedrock during the study period over the study area. This study represents a pioneering effort in assessing the region near the Maitri research base in both spatial and temporal scales. It also marks the first application of UAV surveying techniques with the integration of in-situ data from the Pressure Sensor Assembly (PSA) to examine and understand its complex intra-seasonal dynamics and characteristics. The research team is the first Indian group to employ UAVs for scientific research in the Antarctic region, which is a notable advancement in Indian scientific exploration and contributes to the expanding knowledge of the Antarctic region.

Abstract

The Schiff base was synthesized using the m-bromosalicylaldehyde and ethylenediamine in 1:1 mole ratio. Using the infrared, UV, fluorescence and 1H-13CNMR spectral analysis the m-bromosalicylaldehyde derivative structure was confirmed. Using DFT study the compound structure was optimized. Local energy decomposition (LED) analysis calculated binding energy is -9.19 kcal/mol. The molecule 5BRSET is a optical material, its wavelength is 512 nm and 784 nm respectively. We used three different solvents to calculate the non-linear optical, HOMO-LUMO and molecular electrostatic potential studies, when compared to other solvent the water is showed good activity. Using topological analysis we confirms the localization and delocalization electrons from the synthesized compound. The non-covalent interaction study confirms the intermolecular and intermolecular hydrogen bondings. The natural bond orbital analysis calculation showed the interactions between and within the molecule. A docking study was done on the molecule, and the results show that 5BRSET interacts well with the crystal structure of hypothetical protein (PDB ID: 2EA9). The molecule is moderate activity, which is confirmed by antimicrobial activity.

Abstract

The compound PYANV was characterized by infrared, UV–Visible, fluorescence, and 1H-13CNMR spectral analysis. The DFT calculation was done in the structure of the molecules. The electronic spectra were done in experimental and calculated (DFT). The 1H and 13CNMR spectra peak present in 9.42 (s,1H) ppm and 165.09 ppm respectively, these peak confirm the Schiff base formation. In electronic spectrum we observed two different wavelength which is 329 nm and 405 nm. The fluorescence spectrum also shows two different wavelength such as 499 nm and 666 nm, with exciation of 320 nm. The FT-IR section we observed -CN stretching vibration at 1689 cm−1, this vibration mention the formation of azomethine group. The HOMO-LUMO and MEP studies were done with the gas phase and four different solvents. Topological analysis (ELF, LOL, ALIE) provides about interactions between and within molecules. The RDG (non-covalent) interactions were calculated and analyzed inter and intramolecular hydrogen bonding. NBO calculation represented inter and intra-molecular interactions. A docking study of the compound was done, and docking simulation study results show that PYANV has good interaction against 7RJC protein, and highest binding energy is −5.72 kcal/mol and −6.28 kcal/mol for synthezied compound and standard.

Abstract Background Dishevelled paralogs (DVL1, 2, 3) are key mediators of Wnt pathway playing a role in constitutive oncogenic signaling influencing the tumor microenvironment. While previous studies showed correlation of β-catenin with T cell gene expression, little is known about the role of DVL2 in modulating tumor immunity. This study aimed to uncover the novel interaction between DVL2 and HER2-positive (HER2+) breast cancer (BC) in regulating tumor immunity and disease progression. Methods DVL2 loss of function studies were performed with or without a clinically approved HER2 inhibitor, Neratinib in two different HER2+ BC cell lines. We analyzed RNA (RT-qPCR) and protein (western blot) expression of classic Wnt markers and performed cell proliferation and cell cycle analyses by live cell imaging and flow cytometry, respectively. Abstract

Premature birth and neonatal mortality are significant global health challenges, with 15 million premature births annually and an estimated 2.5 million neonatal deaths. Approximately 90% of preterm births occur in low/middle income countries, particularly within the global regions of sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Neonatal hypothermia is a common and significant cause of morbidity and mortality among premature and low birth weight infants, particularly in low/middle-income countries where rates of premature delivery are high, and access to health workers, medical commodities, and other resources is limited. Kangaroo Mother Care/Skin-to-Skin care has been shown to significantly reduce the incidence of neonatal hypothermia and improve survival rates among premature infants, but there are significant barriers to its implementation, especially in low/middle-income countries (LMICs). The paper proposes the use of a multidisciplinary approach to develop an integrated mHealth solution to overcome the barriers and challenges to the implementation of Kangaroo Mother Care/Skin-to-skin care (KMC/STS) in LMICs. The innovation is an integrated mHealth platform that features a wearable biomedical device (NeoWarm) and an Android-based mobile application (NeoRoo) with customized user interfaces that are targeted specifically to parents/family stakeholders and healthcare providers, respectively. This publication describes the iterative, human-centered design and participatory development of a high-fidelity prototype of the NeoRoo mobile application. The aim of this study was to design and develop an initial ("A") version of the Android-based NeoRoo mobile app specifically to support the use case of KMC/STS in health facilities in Kenya. Key functions and features are highlighted. The proposed solution leverages the promise of digital health to overcome identified barriers and challenges to the implementation of KMC/STS in LMICs and aims to equip parents and healthcare providers of prematurely born infants with the tools and resources needed to improve the care provided to premature and low birthweight babies. It is hoped that, when implemented and scaled as part of a thoughtful, strategic, cross-disciplinary approach to reduction of global rates of neonatal mortality, NeoRoo will prove to be a useful tool within the toolkit of parents, health workers, and program implementors.

Abstract

Background: It is important to assess pediatrician's perception on children's oral health as they tend to meet children early on a regular basis. Quantitative research has shown that pediatricians in India have inadequate knowledge and limited awareness about oral health care in children. Hence, it is important to assess pediatrician's opinion and perception on children's oral health using qualitative interview method. Aim: The aim of the study is to assess and explore the perception of pediatricians on children's oral health in Western Tamil Nadu, India. Methods: A grounded theory approach was employed to conduct this qualitative study. Face-to-face interviews with the pediatricians were conducted using a semi-structured interview guide. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Collected data were written as codes, from which categories and themes were derived. Results: Four themes arrived: (1) dental health and disease, (2) anticipatory guidance, (3) barriers, and (4) remedial measures. The participants felt that they were underinformed about dental home, emergency care for dental trauma, and the interceptive role of dentists on oral deleterious habits. Insufficient dental information in their curriculum and the absence of common guidelines between pediatricians and pediatric dentists in India were considered the common causes for their lack of knowledge. Conclusion: Pediatricians were receptive to acquire knowledge and improvising their skills. They felt that periodic lectures and formal gatherings should be planned between pediatric dentists and pediatricians. Collaborations between pediatrics and pediatric dentistry societies are warranted to provide children with better oral health care.

Abstract

This study analyzes the dynamics of surface melting in Antarctica, which are crucial for understanding glacier and ice sheet behavior and monitoring polar climate change. Specifically, we focus on the Nivlisen ice shelf in East Antarctica, examining melt ponds, supra glacial lakes (SGLs), seasonal surface melt extent, and surface ice flow velocity. Spatial and temporal analysis is based on Landsat and Sentinel-1 data from the austral summers of 2000 to 2023. Between 2000 and 2014, melt ponds and SGLs on the ice shelf covered roughly 1 km2. However, from 2015 to 2023, surface melting increased consistently, leading to more extensive melt ponds and SGLs. Significant SGL depths were observed in 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2020, with 2008, 2016, and 2020 showing the highest volumes and progressive SGL area growth. We also examined the relationship between seasonal surface melt extent and ice flow velocity. Validation efforts involved ground truth data from a melt pond in central Dronning Maud Land (cDML) during the 2022–2023 austral summer, along with model-based results. The observed increase in melt pond depth and volume may significantly impact ice shelf stability, potentially accelerating ice flow and ice shelf destabilization. Continuous monitoring is essential for accurately assessing climate change’s ongoing impact on Antarctic ice shelves.

Abstract

The prevalence of dental misconceptions is significant in modern day. This can be attributed to the contrasting cultural, social and educational exposure of the public. Previous research on dental myths has primarily employed cross-sectional and closed-ended questionnaire methods. However, this study was planned as a qualitative research utilizing open-ended interviews enabling the participants to a greater degree of expression of their opinions and to explore the broader scope of dental myths in practice. Twenty-five participants above the age of 18 years were probed through one-to-one unstructured interviews. The interviews were audiotaped with consent and the transcribed texts were analyzed to identify categories and themes. Manifestations of common dental myths were grouped into five themes namely caries, tooth brushing, extraction, aesthetic care, and primary teeth. This study validated the wide prevalence of dental misconceptions among the public and calls for a combined effort from both patients and dentists to debunk baseless myths and facilitate good oral health care. Abstract

Purpose: The study was planned to develop and validate a novel middle childhood oral health impact scale (MCOHIS) for 6- to 9-year-old children in India. Methodology: A cross-sectional study design was employed to develop and validate MCOHIS in the sequential phases. A panel of ten pediatric dentists evaluated a pool of 36 items corresponding to the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of children. MCOHIS with 20 items under five domains was formulated and content validation was done. Cohen's kappa statistics was employed to measure the concordance between the child's self-report and the caregiver's proxy report. Concurrent validation was done among 130 participants from 13 districts of Tamil Nadu state, India. Discriminant validity was checked among another sample of 60 participants. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability of MCOHIS were assessed using Cronbach's alpha and Kappa statistics respectively. Results: MCOHIS had adequate content validation with Scale Level Content Validity Index / Average score of 0.94 for relevance. There was a statistically significant inter-rater reliability observed between the child's self-report and caregivers' proxy report in all items with a moderate to substantial agreement. Concurrent validation showed a statistically significant positive correlation with a Rho value of 0.712. There was a statistically significant difference noted in overall discriminant validity (P < 0.001). Acceptable internal consistency reliability was observed with Cronbach's alpha value of 0.75. Test-retest reliability showed a high stability coefficient of 0.98. Conclusions: MCOHIS was found to be a valid and reliable age-specific tool for assessing the OHRQoL of Indian children aged 6–9 years.
