2. Charge Transport Properties of a Metal-free Phthalocyanine Discotic Liquid Crystal

Abstract

Discotic liquid crystals can self-align to form one-dimensional semiconducting wires, many tens of microns long. In this letter, we describe the preparation of semiconducting films where the stacking direction of the disc-like molecules is perpendicular to the substrate surface. We present measurements of the charge carrier mobility, applying temperature-dependent time-of-flight transient photoconductivity, space-charge limited current measurements, and field-effect mobility measurements. We provide experimental verification of the highly anisotropic nature of semiconducting films of discotic liquid crystals, with charge carrier mobilities of up to 2.8x10$^{-3}$cm$^2$/Vs. These properties make discotics an interesting choice for applications such as organic photovoltaics., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Two dimensional MXenes, with Ti3C2Tx being the most prominent member, show properties that make them promising for a manifold of applications, including electrodes in light emitting diodes, solar cells, and field effect transistors based on organic semiconductors. In these cases, the work function of MXenes plays an important role in the energy level alignment to the subsequently deposited organic layer, as it determines the electron and hole injection barriers. Therefore, methods for controlling the Ti3C2Tx work function should be developed. We demonstrate that, by using thin layers of metal organic donor acceptor molecules, the work function of Ti3C2Tx can be tuned over a range of gt;3 eV. This enables tuning the energy level alignment to a subsequently deposited organic semiconductor, all the way from intrinsic Fermi level pinning at the highest occupied molecular energy level minimal hole injection barrier to pinning at the lowest unoccupied level minimal electron injection barrier . Furthermore, it is shown that a predominantly oxygen terminated surface does not lead to an extraordinary high work function, in contrast to theoretical predictions. The proposed strategy may greatly expand the use of MXenes in conjunction with organic hole and electron transport layers in optoelectronic devices

Abstract

Objectives: Long-term outcome of Electrical Status Epilepticus during Sleep (ESES) is generally unfavourable but hard to predict in individual children. Longer duration of ESES and younger age at onset of ESES have been reported to be predictors of poor outcome, whereas any treatment response is associated with a relatively better prognosis. This study aimed at determining possible other early predictors of long- term outcome. Material and methods: We retrospectively studied a cohort of 35 children with ESES, treated at the University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG) and the Epilepsy Clinic of SEIN, Zwolle. We examined possible early predictors including duration between onset of clinical symptoms and definite diagnosis of ESES (diagnostic delay), and spike-wave-index (SWI). To evaluate long-term outcome, school performance as well as cognitive, emotional and behavioural functioning was assessed with the parent- reported Brain Injury Alert - adapted for children with ESES. Results: Mean age at onset of epilepsy was 4.2 years; at onset of symptoms suggestive of ESES 6.5 years; and at diagnosis of ESES 7.6 years. SWI >85% was present in 40.0%, SWI 75-85% in 34.3%, and SWI 85% was overall associated with a less favourable outcome: categorized SWI differed significantly between children with and without a negative change in three parameters of the questionnaire: understanding language (p=0.013), depressive feelings (p=0.007), and indifference (p=0.049). Conclusions: In this retrospective study, both prolonged diagnostic delay and higher SWI are associated with unfavourable long-term outcome and might therefore be early predictors for cognitive, emotional and behavioural outcome in children with ESES.
