WEIGHT loss ,SELF-perception ,BODY weight ,REDUCING diets ,SNACK foods ,DIET ,FOOD ,NUTRITION ,FOOD habits ,HEALTH - Abstract
This article presents stories of people who were able to change their lives by losing weight. Looking at old photos with her two young sons, LaWanda Baldwin stopped on a picture of a large woman. "That was me," said Baldwin, who once weighed double (330 lbs.) what she does today (165). How does a person lose half her size? "There's no mystery," says diet doctor Dean Ornish. So they gave up fatty foods and made exercise a habit. The rewards were greater than new, smaller clothing. On a vacation in Tennessee three years ago, Karen and Kristin Mendorf had an urge to go on a hike their parents had taken them on as children. Overweight since childhood, Megan Moore, 27, avoided scales her entire life--until a roommate got one at Christmas, 2001. Lynch tried several diets but settled on NutriSystem because she found its packaged food--three meals and two snacks a day are included in the $247 monthly fee--the tastiest. For Dacia Gilkey her rock bottom came in 1999 as she dressed for a Valentine's Day date. At 256 lbs., she couldn't get a pair of pantyhose up over her thighs. After losing 29 lbs. on a string of different diets, she lost 100 more in just over a year with Jenny Craig, eating 1,700 calories per day with packaged meals and walking three miles daily. INSET: THE MOST POPULAR DIETS.

Inside Kirstie Alley's expansive but cozy cottage in Maine--the one with the 8-ft. -tall lobster statue on the front lawn--the host shows her love to friends and family by making biscuits with sausage gravy, chicken and noodles, and apple pie. If it seems strange to hear an actress refer to herself with Hollywood's dirtiest three-letter word, well, consider it Alley's supreme act of rebellion. The woman who rose to fame on Cheers in the late '80s, trading on her bedroom eyes and bombshell body, is so comfortable with her current weight of 203 lbs. that in July she announced plans for a buzzed-about new cable series called Fat Actress--a comedy-reality show airing on Showtime next year and starring Alley in the title role.

Celebrities may not be superhuman, but they often look that way. Mere mortals face a constant struggle with those extra 5 or 10 lbs., but actresses and pop stars always manage to show up on red carpets looking svelte and perfect. Even when they do gain a few pounds, they're somehow able to drop the weight with amazing speed, and in no time they're back at a premiere, reed thin and smiling for the camera. And the camera adds 5 lbs.! How do they do it?Some stars do it the old-fashioned way, with hard work. Drew Barrymore and Beyonce are both runners; Queen Latifah and Sophie Dahl diet and have hired trainers. But others desperate to stay skinny opt for more extreme measures--and in most cases refuse to talk to about it. Human growth hormone, approved for treatment of hormone deficiencies, including those that cause dwarfism, is now "very fashionable" as a weight-loss aid, says one doctor. Mesotherapy, or multiple injections of herbs and drugs believed to dissolve fat, is growing in popularity despite lacking specific FDA approval. Extreme dieters have embraced a cabinet full of appetite suppressants and other medications designed to help shed pounds.Other ways the stars try to keep slim which are questionable. FIRST-born children ,LABOR - Abstract
Gwyneth Paltrow has things to do: tending to her new baby's belly button, figuring out a feeding schedule, crocheting that baby hat and poncho in the do-it-yourself kit she received soon after her daughter Apple was born on May 13. But four days after giving birth at an English hospital, the Oscar-winning actress was" resting," said her husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, 27, as he greeted reporters outside their home in London's posh Belgravia neighborhood. Martin, who met Paltrow at a 2002 Coldplay concert, plans to lie low until next year, and Paltrow, whose films Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow and Proof are due later this year, has said she might not work" for ages."

ACADEMY Awards ,MOTION picture actors & actresses ,PARTIES ,MOTION picture awards - Abstract
The article looks at the post-Academy Award parties. Forget the fancy frocks. "The Governors Ball is one of the most beautiful things about the Academy Awards," declared Marcia Gay Harden. "There's food!" After sitting through the nearly four-hour ceremony, hungry hobbits and other famished film stars streamed into the Kodak Theatre's Grand Ballroom to fill up before heading out. How do you cater a sit-down meal at Mortons for 150 of Oscar's intimate friends? For a start, engage Patrick Woodroffe, who designed the lighting for Queen Elizabeth's Golden Jubilee concerts at Buckingham Palace. Vanity Fair's famously eclectic mix included civilians, stars and even a moon-walker, astronaut Buzz Aldrin. After the final envelope is opened and the last agent thanked, every celebrity has a plan--and most of those plans include Vanity Fair's top-line do, a tough ticket that draws a rich mix of the famous from showbiz and beyond. With the adrenaline still flowing like champagne, and the champagne flowing like water, Oscar laureates Charlize Theron, Sean Penn, Renee Zellweger and Tim Robbins mixed and mingled--and stargazed just like everyone else.

ACADEMY Awards ,AWARD presentations ,CELEBRITIES ,SPEECHES, addresses, etc. - Abstract
We solve the biggest head-scratchers of the show in our guide to this year's Oscar mysteries. Who is John Carrabino, the man whom Renee Zellweger thanked so effusively while accepting her Best Supporting Actress award? "My beloved John Carrabino," as Zellweger called him, is the star's longtime manager. After her turn in 1994's "The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre," he helped her land a little film called "Jerry Maguire." An ever grateful Zellweger told James Lipton last year that it was Carrabino who "just thought, for some reason, that I should be in a movie with Tom Cruise. It didn't seem to occur to anybody else, but it did to him." Did Jack Black and Will Ferrell get paid by Del Taco for their song "You're Boring"? Alas, Black is disappointed to report that he and Ferrell received no money for name-dropping the popular Mexican fastfood restaurant in their ditty about excruciatingly long-winded acceptance speeches. (Sample lyric: "You're boring/Look at Catherine Zeta-Jones, she's snoring.") The ballad culminated with a soaring chorus of "You could have rushed up to the stage, but you were lollygagging/They're turning off your microphone and cutting to a commercial for Del Taco!" "They gave me nothing," says Black, who cowrote the lyrics with Ferrell. "But I assume I'll be getting a lifetime's worth of free tacos now."

In this special foldout section, [photographer Kevin Mazur] shares a decade's worth of memories (along with some celebrity dish). Madonna on the red carpet in '98: Madonna is hamming it up for me. She cleared the way so I could get a nice full-length shot. Catherine Zeta-Jones at the Miramax party in '03: "Wow! To be so far into her pregnancy, still look that amazing and win to boot. That was a total home run." Elton John & Elizabeth Hurley at Elton John's party in '00: They're good friends, and Elton's really playful at his parties. ACADEMY Awards ,AWARD presentations ,CELEBRITIES ,FASHION ,DRESSES ,FASHION accessories ,DESIGNERS - Abstract
This section describes the gowns and fashion accessories worn by celebrities at the Academy Awards ceremony. Designer Vera Wang, for one, was predicting some Academy Awards zing. "Everybody's been so elegant and classical," she said. "I think this year people are going to take chances." Not after watching Janet Jackson's sunburst at the Super Bowl they weren't. Opting for chic over shock, most stars chose couture that clung to--but did not excessively bare--curves. Elegant beat edgy, and vintage was au courant: Jennifer Garner turned up in vintage Valentino, while Samantha Morton chose vintage Givenchy. And (relatively) tasteful ice was much in evidence--from the 3-carat stone in Sting's necktie to the 1,500 diamonds in Charlize Theron's clutch. Still, Hollywood did not allow good taste to ruin the evening's fun. Swashbuckler Johnny Depp balanced his trademark cool with a brightly colored Band-Aid on his finger, given to him by his 4-year-old daughter Lily-Rose. And Jamie Lee Curtis decided against a long-sleeve black dress in favor of a bright-blue strapless gown. Why? "I felt like celebrating brave choices."

From power dinners to dancing at dawn, here's Oscar weekend from the celeb's eye view. Table hopping: Among the A-list diners at Beverly Hills eatery Mr. Chow on Friday night: Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson with designer Tom Ford; Elton John; and designers Vera Wang and Richard Tyler. The doughnut diet: Las Vegas star Molly Sims indulged in the self-serve Krispy Kreme bar at Jeffrey Katzenberg's annual Night Before charity bash on Saturday: "It was like sundaes," she says. "You could do M&Ms and fudge." Thanks, Mom: At the Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica on Saturday, Whale Rider's Keisha Castle-Hughes, 13, made plans to stave off hunger during the Oscar telecast: "I would like to take a burger, but my mom said I am not allowed. She said I have to take some nuts and raisins." (Faye Dunaway had no such restrictions: During the Oscar ceremony, she strode through the theater lobby munching from a box of Chinese chicken salad.).

After weeks of cat-and-mouse sightings, actress Demi Moore and hunk-of-the-moment Ashton Kutcher got down to serious business the night of May 31, when Hollywood's attention was trained on the MTV Movie Awards at the Shrine Auditorium. First, Kutcher emerged from the theater to escort the later-arriving Moore in, then hustled her backstage, where they kissed and Kutchey-cooed in front of oglers. After quitting Hollywood for Hailey, Idaho, in 1998 following box office flops and the breakup of her marriage to Bruce Willis, Moore turned full-time to raising daughters Rumer, now 14, Scout, 11, and Tallulah, 9. After dinner--featuring grilled chicken and Sinatra tunes--Kutcher and Moore gave each other a kiss on their way out of the restaurant. Now, fast on the heels of his April breakup with Brittany Murphy, 25, his 'Just Married' costar and girlfriend of seven months, Kutcher is romancing Moore and hanging with his new best friend and partner in the self-styled new Rat Pack, Sean" P. BUILDING repair ,TELEVISION programs ,INTERIOR decoration ,DESIGN - Abstract
The article looks at successful and not-so-successful house makeovers from a number of television shows including "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" and "Trading Spaces". Having lost both their parents to heart problems 14 days apart in 2003, the blended Cadigan-Scott family of eight siblings ages 13 to 23 were in need of help when ABC's hit show came calling. "The shingles were falling off the house," says Kelli-Ann Cadigan, 19, an assistant restaurant manager. "The lawn was dead. The windows were so molded over you couldn't see out of them." The renovations nearly doubled the original square footage to 2,200 square feet, creating eight separate bedrooms for the first time. Diane and Bryan Schwartz say they grew nervous when they spotted Hildi Santo Tomás, the Trading Spaces designer notorious for her outlandish ideas, on the day taping began in November '02. Says Diane: "I told my husband, 'Honey, this is not going to be good.'" From their perspective, it wasn't: They wound up taking one month and$5,000 of their own money to undo Santo Tomás's vision, which included 4,000 wine labels plastered on the walls. The Schwartzes--who say they told producers that they don't allow alcohol in their home--were not impressed.

ACADEMY Awards ,AWARD presentations ,CELEBRITIES ,FILMMAKERS ,WIVES ,DRESSES ,PERSONAL trainers - Abstract
The article is a first-person account by the wife of a director about what it is like to attend the Academy Awards presentation when you are not the nominee and are not famous. Imagine your worst humiliation. Now imagine that feeling squared. That's what it's like to be a red-carpet widow. I am a normal person. But I am married to someone who lives half his life in an abnormal world--a world where beautiful people cavort and the wine flows like Evian, which flows like Fiji Water. My husband is a film producer--an Academy Award-winning film producer. As a pair, we've attended numerous premieres, countless black-tie events, several Golden Globes and two Oscar shows. And each time, I am reminded that I am a nobody. You have no idea how much effort it takes to be a nobody. Two years ago, when my husband, Brian Grazer, was nominated for Best Picture for "A Beautiful Mind," after I congratulated him, tears of joy running down my face (perhaps because it was 5:30 in the morning), I was seized by another, even stronger emotion: abject fear. What was I going to wear? And how was I going to fit in that thing I was going to wear? Who would do my hair? How does one go about getting hair that one wants done? Who would do my makeup? Who would do my plastic surgery? See, even though I am a card-carrying member of the Society of Nobodies, I am just as vain as the next green-light movie star.

CELEBRITIES , *FASHION , *PURPLE , *JEWELRY , *EARRINGS - Abstract
The article presents fashion trends among Hollywood celebrities. A favored hue of kings and queens, purple is adorning Hollywood royalty too--in sophisticated, premiere-worthy dresses (Kelly Rowland, Charlize Theron) as well as chic little separates (Julia Stiles). At the New York City Dogville premiere on Oct. 4, Chloe Sevigny shone in a sequined Lanvin sheath. Displaying decolletage but little jewelry, she punctuated the look with scarlet lips and Lanvin stilettos. Kirsten Dunst, Reese Witherspoon and other stars are snapping up Delux Beauty's ultra-portable Junior Duos. Celebrity style-setters Cameron Diaz, Lisa Kudrow, Lara Flynn Boyle and Britney Spears have all gotten into the spirit.
