Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) arising in the small intestine are known to produce vasoactive substances, including serotonin, that may result in the carcinoid syndrome (flushing, diarrhea, bronchoconstriction, and carcinoid heart disease). Measurement of the serotonin breakdown product 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in urine is important in diagnosing and monitoring of patients with intestinal NETs. Our aim was to compare 5-HIAA measurement in 24-h urine sampling with overnight (∼8-h) sampling in patients with known NETs, or at follow-up of patients potentially cured for their NETs. Twenty-four-hour and overnight urine samples were collected from 34 patients and analyzed for urinary 5-HIAA (U5-HIAA) using HPLC. Comparison of the overnight sampling values with the 24-h values showed no difference, P=0.45, and there was a significant direct correlation between the two samples using linear regression (R=0.97, P<0.001). U5-HIAA sample collection during a nightly interval of ∼8 h appears to have the same accuracy as the 24-h collection in this group of patients.

The objective of this study was to test if and how self-administered practice of relaxation techniques, positive affirmation and guided imagery, in the final part of pregnancy had an impact on giving birth. Further to see if the use of a simple method, a CD with a booklet, with no previous training or specific support of the participants (neither required nor delivered), affected the birth experience. Outcome measures were monitored both during and after delivery: During delivery, pain and anxiety were measured at different stages of birth. Post-delivery Wellbeing (Edmonton Scale 0-10, where 10 is the worst possible feeling of Wellbeing), pain, anxiety, Apgar score, duration of birth, complications and anesthesia/analgesic were recorded. Those in the CD-intervention group also reported how many times they had practiced the techniques. The study employed a randomized controlled trial. The nucleotide sequence of chicken invariant chain (Ii) was determined, and the amino acid sequence similarity with human Ii is 61%. Certain regions important for the biological function of human Ii are highly conserved between chicken and mammals. The cytoplasmic tail of chicken Ii fused to the plasma membrane reporter molecule neuraminidase relocated the protein to endosomes. Moreover, like the mammalian orthologs, the cytoplasmic tail was found to contain two independent leucine-based endosomal sorting signals. Chicken Ii was found to interact with human Ii and crosslinking studies also indicate that chicken Ii assembles as a trimer. The chicken Ii can furthermore bind the human MHC class II (HLA-DR1). Many of the functional properties between the chicken Ii and its mammalian orthologs are thus maintained in spite of their sequence differences., (Copyright 2000 Academic Press.)
