1. External complexation of BODIPYs by CB[7] improves in-cell fluorescence imaging

Abstract: Organic luminescent compounds with high emission properties play a crucial role in fluorescence labelling and optoelectronic devices. In this work, we prepared three water soluble BODIPY derivatives (B-4, B-5, and B-6) which are weakly fluorescent due to non-radiative relaxation pathways (charge transfer: CT or heavy atom effect). However, CB[7] significantly improves BODIPY fluorescence by similar to 10 fold for B-4, and by similar to 3 fold for B-5. The (TD)DFT analyses suggest that for B-4 and B-5, the CT state is blue-shifted as a result of the external binding of CB[7] near the pyridinium groups. This effect favoured a radiative decay through a locally-excited (LE) pi ->pi* transition state of BODIPYs resulting in a CB[7]-induced emission increase in solution (and in the solid state), without compromising singlet-to-triplet intersystem crossing (ISC). The improved emission of the BODIPY center dot CB[7] complexes was used for the fluorescence imaging of U87 cells illustrating the relevance of this approach. These results suggest that BODIPY center dot CB[7] complexes could be used as theragnostic agents by combining fluorescence imaging and treatment by photodynamic therapy.

Abstract: Pea3 proteins belong to a subfamily of the E-twentysix (ETS) domain superfamily of transcription factors, which play various roles during development. Polyoma Enhancer-Activator 3 (Pea3) proteins Pea3, ERM and Er81 are particularly involved in tissues with branching morphogenesis, including kidney, lung, mammary gland and nervous system development. A recent transcriptomic study on novel targets of Pea3 transcription factor revealed various axon guidance and nervous system development related targets, supporting a role of Pea3 proteins in motor neuron connectivity, as well as novel targets in signaling pathways involved in synaptic plasticity. This study focuses on the expression of Pea3 family members in hippocampal neurons, and regulation of putative Pea3 targets in Pea3-overexpressing cell lines and following induction of long-term potentiation or seizure in vivo. We show that Pea3 proteins are expressed in hippocampus in both neuronal and non-neuronal cells, and that Pea3 represses Elk-1 but activates Prkca and Nrcam expression in hippocampal cell lines. We also show that mRNA and protein levels of Pea3 family members are differentially regulated in the dentate gyrus and CA1 region upon MECS stimulation, but not upon LTP induction. Abstract: International audience; Mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles (PHT-PMO) have been prepared from an octa-triethoxysilylated Zn phthalocyanine precursor. These PHT-PMO nanoparticles had no dark toxicity but high phototoxicity when irradiated at 650 nm, and remarkable near-infrared phototoxicity when excited at 760 and 810 nm. The PHT-PMO were then aminated to promote electrostatic complexation with siRNA. Transfection experiments were performed upon NIR irradiation and photochemical internalization was very efficient, leading to 65% luciferase extinction in MCF-7 cancer cells expressing stable luciferase.

Abstract: International audience; Three bisphthalonitriles with different grafting functions (O/S/SO2) have been selected for their future interest in the preparation of dimeric phthalocyanines with tailored properties. The bisphthalonitrile derivatives have been prepared and comparatively characterized. Their complete structural properties were investigated and their XRD-determined structures were compared with their DFT-optimized ones. Molecular orbital levels and energy gaps were also determined and analysed. The sulfonyl (SO2) function induces different behaviour compared to the S and O grafting which are more similar.

Abstract: WOS: 000382229700133, Oxide (Cu2O) nanowires were synthesized on a glass substrate by using anodization method and then their structural, optical, electrical and gas sensing properties were investigated. Copper thin films that coated on glass substrates with evaporation technique were anodized in 0.2 M KOH + 0.1 M NH4F solution for 5 min at room temperature. Then, the crystallization of nanowires was handled via annealingat 280 degrees C under vacuum. The fabricated nanowires were characterized by scanning electron microscope(SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV-vis spectrophotometer. The DC electrical measurements of Cu2O nanowires were done in the temperature range of 30 degrees C-200 degrees C under dry air. Cu2O nanowires were tested against to H-2 in dry air ambient depending on concentrationand temperature. Abstract: The emergence of drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains has posed a driving demand in the search for more effective treatment regimens for tuberculosis. In the present study, a series of novel thiourea derivatives containing aminoguanidine moiety were synthesized by the reaction of aminoguanidine and various isothiocyanates in an attempt to discern new potent active agents against tuberculosis. The structure of synthesized compounds was characterized by FTIR,H- 1-NMR, C-13-NMR and HRMS. The proposed structure of compound BI19 was resolved using single X-ray crystallography. The compounds were tested in vitro against M. tuberculosis H37Rv for antitubercular activity. Some of them have high antimycobacterial action, for instance, BI-17 with a MIC value of 0.78 mu M and low cytotoxicity. Furthermore, computational studies and enzyme inhibition experiments were performed to identify the target for the observed antitubercular effects. (c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: International audience; Morphological attribute profiles (APs) are among the most prominent methods for the spatial-spectral pixel analysis of remote sensing images. ince their introduction a decade ago to tackle land-cover classification, many studies have been contributed to the state-of-the-art, focusing not only on their application to a wider range of tasks, but on their performance improvement and extension to more complex earth observation data as well. Despite the overwhelming proliferation of deep learning-based methods in the past five years, APs are far from obsolete, due mainly to their high flexibility, low computational cost, lower training data requirement, and rigorous mathematical foundation. In this survey, an entire decade of more than 100 AP related contributions to the field of remote sensing have been compiled, providing an extensive panorama of this robust and effective tool. Moreover, a collective experimental comparison of the reviewed AP variations is provided as well, not only in terms of classification performance, but for the first time in terms of their generalization capacity too.

Abstract: International audience; This paper outlines the synthesis and application of a sustainable composite for the photo-Fenton-like degradation of caffeine, bisphenol A, and simazine. The phase, morphology, optical and magnetic properties of the samples were evaluated by different characterization techniques. The composite of Fe2.5Co0.3Zn0.2O4 and copper-chromium layered double hydroxide (CuCr-LDH) was determined to be the most favorable photocatalyst in the photo-Fenton-like process when compared with Fe3O4, Fe2.5Co0.3Zn0.2O4, CuCr-LDH, and Fe3O4/CuCr-LDH composite. Studying the efficiency of the photo-Fenton-like degradation process in the presence of the Fe2.5Co0.3Zn0.2O4/CuCr-LDH composite revealed a degradation rate constant of caffeine twice more than the sum of those obtained for the individual processes. This ascribes to the synergistic effect by which the photo-generated electron-hole from the catalyst and the efficient reduction of Fe3+, Cu2+, etc. during the photo-Fenton-like reaction is accelerated. Moreover, under the optimal condition and after 120 min of heterogenous photo-Fenton-like process at natural pH, > 90% of pollutants mixture was decomposed. The experiments fulfilled in near-real conditions demonstrated I) the high stability and magnetically recoverability of the photocatalyst and II) the proper degradation performance of the applied heterogenous photo-Fenton-process in the removal of pollutant mixture in different water bodies and in the presence of chloride and bicarbonate ions.photo-Fenton-like process at natural pH, > 90% of pollutants mixture was decomposed. Abstract: We consider the propagation of equatorial waves of small amplitude, in a flow with an underlying non-uniform current. Without making the too restrictive rigid-lid approximation, by exploiting the available Hamiltonian structure of the problem, we derive the dispersion relation for the propagation of coupled long-waves: a surface wave and an internal wave. Also, we investigate the above-mentioned model of wave-current interactions in the general case with arbitrary vorticities.

This simple and rapid fabrication method leads to the formation of a nanofibrous composite electrode, where the poly(ortho-phenylenediamine) (PoPD) layer envelops a previously formed carbon network, which is prepared with various SWCNT/PoPD ratios. Excellent cycling stability for more than 10 000 cycles is achieved for SWCNT/PoPD (wt/wt ratio of 1 : 5) in an asymmetric two-electrode configuration (in which Zn is used as both reference and counter electrodes) with a specific capacitance of about 350 F g−1 (35 mF cm−2) at 7.3 A g−1 (0.73 mA cm−2) current density. This performance is about 3 times higher than that of the PoPD (110 F g−1) electrode and ∼30 times higher than that of the bare carbon network (12 F g−1). The improved performance of the nanocomposite compared to that of its pristine counterparts is ascribed to a synergistic effect between the SWCNTs and PoPD, enhanced electrical conductivity and the resulting open porous network structure allowing the easy access of electrolyte ions into the electrode. This device structure with a capacitor-type nanocomposite cathode can be of interest for use in micro energy storage devices and for systems employing other charge carriers.

Abstract: Water based electrolytes enable very high ionic conductivity, and are particularly attractive for high power density batteries. The main advantages of water-based electrolytes are their lower cost and nonflammability, while their principal disadvantage is the limited thermodynamic electrochemical window of water. Yet, the latter is currently being challenged, through the use of highly concentrated electrolytes (“water in salt concept”). Strong research focus is currently placed on rechargeable M-ion batteries (M ¼ Li, Na) mimicking the organic Li-ion or Na-ion batteries, which will despite falling shorter in energy density exhibit cost advantages. Moreover, they should be expected to deliver very attractive power densities. The main challenge at this stage is the development of new negative electrodes able to operate at lower potentials. A more challenging topic is divalent ion concepts (M ¼ Zn) using a Zn metal anode which could, in principle, deliver higher energy density, but for which issues still remain related to (i) developing appropriate positive electrode materials for reversible Zn ion insertion and (ii) side reactions involving mostly H+ or OH species, which are not yet mastered.

Abstract: Photosensitizing nanogels were obtained through a surfactant-free single-step protocol by using a porphyrin-based cross-linker for stabilizing self-assembled nanosized aggregates of thermoresponsive copolymers. Nanogels with varying amounts of porphyrin retained the singlet oxygen generation ability of the porphyrin core and were also capable of inducing temperature increase upon irradiation at 635 nm. Photoinduced killing efficiency was tested against three cell lines: human breast adenocarcinoma (MDA-MB-231 and MCF7) and pancreatic adenocarcinoma (AsPC-1) cells, and a predominant photodynamic mechanism at 450 nm and a mixed photodynamic and photothermal effect at 635 nm was observed. This innovative access to photosensitizing nanogels is a proof of concept, and opens new perspectives toward the preparation of optimized nanophotosensitizers.

Abstract: International audience; Strategies have been tailored to enhance electro-active material capacities and the cycle lives of sodium-ion batteries. Amongst the available electrode materials, metal–organic framework derived anode materials have begun to stand out because of their versatile compositions, structures, and textures, leading to high specific surface areas and more active electrochemical reaction sites. Herein, Ni-MOF is first prepared from a bio-available organic linker, namely gallic acid, in a benign solvent (water). Then a nickel sulfide/carbon (NiS/C) composite is synthesized via concurrent sulfuration and carbonization under nitrogen flow at 600 °C. Carbon-encapsulated NiS particles are formed, in which the carbon framework both prevents the volume expansion of NiS during discharge and also gives rise to higher conductivity. The resulting NiS/C composite is tested as a potential anode material for sodium-ion batteries and it delivered a capacity of around 208 mA h g−1 at a current density of 1475 mA g−1 after 500 charge/discharge cycles. The Na+-ion diffusion rate is calculated through Warburg impedance analysis, and values of 1.8 × 10−16 and 3.5 × 10−15 S cm−1 are obtained initially and after cell operations are terminated, respectively.

Abstract: Hydroethidine (HE) and hydropropidine ($$\hbox {HPr}^{+}$$ HPr + ) are fluorogenic probes used for the detection of the intra- and extracellular superoxide radical anion ($$\hbox {O}_{ {2}}^{\bullet -}$$ O 2 ∙ - ). In this study, we provide evidence that HE and $$\hbox {HPr}^{+}$$ HPr + react rapidly with the biologically relevant radicals, including the hydroxyl radical, peroxyl radicals, the trioxidocarbonate radical anion, nitrogen dioxide, and the glutathionyl radical, via one-electron oxidation, forming the corresponding radical cations. At physiological pH, the radical cations of the probes react rapidly with $$\hbox {O}_{ {2}}^{\bullet -}$$ O 2 ∙ - , leading to the specific 2-hydroxylated cationic products. We determined the rate constants of the reaction between $$\hbox {O}_{ {2}}^{\bullet -}$$ O 2 ∙ - and the radical cations of the probes. We also synthesized N-methylated analogs of $$\hbox {HPr}^{+}$$ HPr + and HE which were used in mechanistic studies. Methylation of the amine groups was not found to prevent the reaction between the radical cation of the probe and the superoxide, but it significantly increased the lifetime of the radical cation and had a substantial effect on the profiles of the oxidation products by inhibiting the formation of dimeric products. We conclude that the N-methylated analogs of HE and $$\hbox {HPr}^{+}$$ HPr + may be used as a scaffold for the design of a new generation of probes for intra- and extracellular superoxide.

Abstract: International audience; Hard carbons derived from glucose and glucosamine are synthesized via microwave-assisted hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) and subsequent pyrolysis treatment to be used as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Related to the limited lithium ion intercalation to graphite (LiC6) resulting relatively low theoretical capacity (372 mAh/g), silicon is considered as one of the most appealing anode materials for LIBs by exhibiting very high theoretical capacity (3578 mAh/g, based on Li15Si4). However, silicon suffers from huge volume expansion during intercalation of lithium ions which causes rapid capacity fading. One of the most practical strategy to suppress this problem is to coat the silicon nanoparticles with carbonaceous materials. Herein, silicon is coated via microwave-assisted hydrothermal carbonization method in the presence of glucose or glucosamine which are then further pyrolyzed at 750 °C to obtain silicon-carbon composite anodes. Composite containing glucosamine (Si-GA-C-750) enables N-doped carbon evidenced by EDX and XPS analyses which contributes to obtain much enhanced electrochemical properties than that of glucose containing composite (Si-G-C-750). Additionally, higher Li+ diffusion coefficient and smaller resistance values attest the advantageous nature of the N-doped anode material.

Abstract: In the study, sol-gel based TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) were doped by Cu(II), and the surface of cotton fabric was coated with Cu-doped TiO2 NPs to develop self-cleaning and antibacterial properties. Coffee stains were introduced on the modified cotton fabric and under suntest illumination; a decrease in the color of coffee stain was followed over time via K/S value to determine self-cleaning performance. The photocurrent in a photoelectrocatalytic reactor was measured to evaluate the photocatalytic effect of Cu(II) doping. TiO2 NPs showed self-cleaning and antibacterial effects under UV-illuminated conditions. However, no effects were observed under dark (non-illuminated) conditions. The modified textiles with Cu(II) doped TiO2 NPs showed antibacterial activity against E. coli under light and dark conditions. Under the 2 h illumination period, fluctuating color changes were observed on the raw cotton fabric, and stains remained on the fabric while 78% and 100% color removals were achieved in the cotton fabrics coated by Cu doped TiO2 NPs in 1 h and 2 h, respectively.

Abstract: We consider the problem of computing the topology and describing the geometry of a parametric curve in Rn. We present an algorithm, PTOPO, that constructs an abstract graph that is isotopic to the curve in the embedding space. Our method exploits the benefits of the parametric representation and does not resort to implicitization. Most importantly, we perform all computations in the parameter space and not in the implicit space. When the parametrization involves polynomials of degree at most d and maximum bitsize of coefficients τ, then the worst case bit complexity of PTOPO is OB (nd6 + nd5 τ + d4 (n2 + nτ) + d3 (n2τ + n3) + n3d2τ). This bound matches the current record bound OB (d6 + d5 τ) for the problem of computing the topology of a planar algebraic curve given in implicit form. For planar and space curves, if N = max{d, τ}, the complexity of PTOPO becomes OB (N6), which improves the state-of-the-art result, due to Alcazar and Diaz-Toca [CAGD'10], by a factor of N10. However, visualizing the curve on top of the abstract graph construction, increases the bound to OB (N7). We have implemented PTOPO in maple for the case of planar curves. Our experiments illustrate its practical nature.

19. The unique features and promises of phthalocyanines as advanced photosensitisers for photodynamic therapy of cancer

Author: Lo P.-C., Rodríguez-Morgade M.S., Pandey R.K., Ng D.K.P., Torres T., Dumoulin F. and Fabienne Dumoulin completed her PhD in Organic Chemistry in Lyon, France (2002). She joined the Chemistry Department of Gebze Technical University in 2005, where she got interested in the chemistry, properties and applications of tetrapyrrolic derivatives, mainly phthalo- cyanines for photodynamic therapy. She has authored so far 80+ publications (research articles, reviews and book chapters) and supervised a dozen of master’s and PhD students. She has been awarded several Young Scientist Awards: TUBA-GEB?P from the Turkish Academy of Sciences, BAGEP from the Bilim Akademisi and the Mustafa N Parlar Foundation of METU. She chairs the GTÜ-photodynamic days every year, was elected officer of the executive committee of the European Society for Photobiology in 2015 and 2017, is an associate editor for RSC Advances and the Journal of Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines, and is a member of the Turkish mirror group of the European Technology Platform on Nanomedicine.

Abstract: International audience; An integrated electrogravimetric study based on electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) unravels the interfacial ion transfer phenomena of the poly(ortho-phenylenediamine) (PoPD) thin film electrodes. Through a methodology coupling QCM with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (ac-electrogravimetry), our work indicates that charge compensation process of PoPD in aqueous electrolytes (in acidified NaCl) occurs with the participation of multiple species, each playing a role at different temporal scales. The PoPD films are tested in a 2 electrode Swagelok cell in which Zn is used as both reference and counter electrodes and exhibit excellent stability over 8000 cycles with a relatively high specific capacitance of about 110 F g−1 at 30 C (0.63 mA cm−2) current density. The high rate capability and the excellent cycling stability of the PoPD electrodes are correlated to the electrolyte composition and the significant role of H+ to the charge compensation process is unravelled, which is made possible with coupled electrogravimetric methods of our study. By determining the interfacial flux dynamics and as well as the relative proportions of species transferred at the electrode/electrolyte interface, our results contribute to the understanding of the charge-discharge process of PoPD polymer, yet underexplored but emerging as a pseudo-capacitive electrode material.

Abstract: International audience; Phthalocyanine derivatives do not cease to gain attention due to their numerous properties and applications (e.g., sensor, PDT). This makes them a unique scaffold for the design of new material. In this context, we were interested to develop the synthesis of an imino nitroxide‐substituted phthalocyanine by Ullman's procedure; a challenge due to the intrinsic low solubility of most phthalocyanine derivative in much solvents. To overcome this solubility problem, we designed a phthalocyanine with bulky neopentyl substituents in peripheral positions as counterpart to the imino nitroxide moieties. The imino nitroxide‐substituted phthalocyanine was obtained by condensation of a monoformyl‐substituted phthalocyanine with 2,3‐bis(hydroxylamino)‐2,3‐dimethylbutane in refluxing THF–MeOH (2:1) mixture in the presence of p ‐toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate, follow by oxidation with PbO2. Characterization was performed by electrochemistry, UV/Vis and EPR spectroscopy in solution as well as SQUID in solid state.

Abstract: International audience; An optimized nucleophilic synthetic approach featuring mild conditions and microwave energy was utilized to circumvent the classical Ullman procedure and access a polynitronyl nitroxide radical easily and in pure form. The simultaneous controlled introduction of preformed nitronyl nitroxide radicals on a cyclotriphosphazene core leads to a novel polyphosphazene monomer which is suitable for both n‐ and a p‐type redox‐active material in organic rechargeable batteries as demonstrated by electrochemistry. Additionally, absorption spectra and square‐wave voltammetry were utilized to quantify the number of nitronyl nitroxide radical units on the cyclotriphosphazene scaffold.

Abstract: Porphyrin- or phthalocyanine-bridged silsesquioxane nanoparticles (BSPOR and BSPHT) were prepared. Their endocytosis in MCF-7 cancer cells was shown with two-photon excited fluorescence (TPEF) imaging. With two-photon excited photodynamic therapy (TPE-PDT), BSPOR was more phototoxic than BSPHT, which in contrast displayed a very high signal for photoacoustic imaging in mice.

Abstract: International audience; The synthesis of a homogeneous neutral hexaradical architecture consisting of six imino nitroxide radical moieties covalently bonded on a cyclotriphosphazene scaffold was reported. The synthesis of hexaradical imino nitroxide compounds follows the Ullman procedure involving the condensation of 2,3-bis(hydroxylamino)-2,3-dimethylbutane with hexa-(4-formylphenoxy)cyclotriphosphazene (3) followed by oxidation of the condensation product hexa-[4-(1-hydroxy-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-2-imidazoline-2-yl)phenoxy]cyclotriphosphazene (2) by NaIO4. Characterization of hexaradical was performed by X-ray and SQUID in solid state and by EPR, absorption spectroscopy, and electrochemistry in solution. CV of 1 shows an oxidation peak at 1.184 V (vs SCE) and a reduction peak at −0.883 V, both characteristics of the presence of phenyl imino nitroxide (7) moieties, suggesting that the contribution of the cyclotriphosphazene core is negligible. Attention was particularly focused on developing methods, UV–vis spectroscopy and square-wave voltammetry, to quantify the number of radicals in a way to confirm easily and rapidly the polyradicals’ structure.

Abstract: International audience; The concept of Reload cost in a graph refers to the cost that occurs while traversing a vertex via two of its incident edges. This cost is uniquely determined by the colors of the two edges. This concept has various applications in transportation networks, communication networks, and energy distribution networks. Various problems using this model are defined and studied in the literature. The problem of finding a spanning tree whose diameter with respect to the reload costs is the smallest possible, the problems of finding a path, trail or walk with minimum total reload cost between two given vertices, problems about finding a proper edge coloring of a graph such that the total reload cost is minimized, the problem of finding a spanning tree such that the sum of the reload costs of all paths between all pairs of vertices is minimized, and the problem of finding a set of cycles of minimum reload cost, that cover all the vertices of a graph, are examples of such problems. In this work we focus on the last problem. Noting that a cycle cover of a graph is a 2-factor of it, we generalize the problem to that of finding an r -factor of minimum reload cost of an edge colored graph. We prove several $NP$-hardness results for special cases of the problem. Namely, bounded degree graphs, planar graphs, bounded total cost, and bounded number of distinct costs. For the special case of r =2 , our results imply an improved $NP$-hardness result. On the positive side, we present a polynomial-time solvable special case which provides a tight boundary between the polynomial and hard cases in terms of r and the maximum degree of the graph. We then investigate the parameterized complexity of the problem, prove W[1]-hardness results and present an FPT-algorithm.

Abstract: We present a magnetic domain-imaging study by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism photoelectron emission microscopy on a Co/Fe75Gd25 bilayer under exposure to single focused ultrashort (100 fs) infrared laser pulses. Magnetic domain walls experience a force in the intensity gradient of the laser pulses away from the center of the pulse, which can be used to steer domain walls to move in a certain direction. Maximum domain-wall displacements after individual laser pulses close to 1 mu m in zero external field are observed. Quantitative estimates show that electronic spin currents from the spin-dependent Seebeck effect are not strong enough to explain the effect, which we thus attribute to the torque exerted by magnons from the spin Seebeck effect that are reflected at the domain wall. Abstract: In the framework of the TRANSport Emissions and Mitigation in the East Mediterranean (TRANSEMED/ChArMEx) program; Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) measurements were performed for the first time in Istanbul (Turkey) at an urban site in September 2014. One commercial gas-chromatograph coupled to a flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and one proton transfer mass spectrometer (PTR-MS) were deployed. In addition, sorbent tubes and canisters were implemented within the megacity close to major emission sources. More than 70 species including non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC), oxygenated VOCs (OVOC) and organic compounds of intermediate volatility (IVOC) have been quantified. Among these compounds, 23 anthropogenic and biogenic species were continuously collected at the urban site. VOC concentrations show a great variability with maxima exceeding 10 ppb (i.e. n-butane, toluene, methanol, and acetaldehyde) and mean values between 0.1 (methacrolein + methylvinylketone) to 4.9 ppb (methanol). OVOC represents 43.9 % of the total VOC concentrations followed by alkanes (26.3 %), aromatic compounds (20.7 %), alkenes (4.8 %), terpenes (3.4 %) and acetonitrile (0.8 %). However, on average, the atmospheric composition of anthropogenic alkanes and aromatics is similar to the ones of European megacities like Paris and London, suggesting the impact of traffic emissions for those compounds. Unusual diurnal profiles of anthropogenic VOC, different from the one of traffic derived products like NOx, reveal the complex interaction between emissions and meteorology. Multiple evidences of the impact of sources other than traffic like industrial activities under continental and south–southwesterly wind regimes or ship emissions on IVOC loads was found. Five factors have been extracted from the PMF model (EPA/PMF 5.0) and have been compared to source profiles established by near-field measurements and other external variables (meteorological parameters, NOx, CO, SO2 ...). Surprisingly, road transport is not the dominant source by only explaining 15.8 % of measured VOC concentrations contrary to the local emission inventory. Other factors are toluene from solvent use (14.2 %), biogenic terpenes (7.8 %), natural gas evaporation (25.9 %), composed of butanes, and a last factor characterized by mixed regional emissions and composed of most of the species (36.3 %). The PMF results point out the influence of industrial emissions while there is no clear evidence of the impact of ship emissions on the measured VOC distribution. One reason might be the absence of IVOC in the input matrix; these compounds should be considered in future studies dealing with coastal urban areas. The sensitivity of PMF results on input data (time resolution, meteorological period, peak episode, uncertainty) was tested. While some PMF run are statistically less performant than the reference run, sensitivity tests show that same factors (number and type) are found with slightly different factor contributions (up to 15 % of change). Finally, the emission ratios (ER) of VOC relative to carbon monoxide (CO) were established. These ratios are consistent with those observed in Los Angeles within a factor of 2. These ER and the road transport factor from PMF were used to estimate VOC emissions and to evaluate three downscaled global emissions inventories (EDGAR, ACCMIP and MACCity). It was found that OVOC emissions were underestimated by a factor of 10 to 26 depending on the inventory. NMHC emission estimations were most of the time within the same range or overestimated by a 3 to 26-fold. In the road transport emission evaluation, EDGAR inventory was found to be better than ACCMIP inventory with most of the compounds within a range of 3 except for Like in TRANSEMED–Beirut (Lebanon), our work stresses the inadequacy of global emission inventories in the East Mediterranean and discrepancies between emission inventories themselves. There is an urgent need to better represent VOC emissions in this region including non-traffic sources, OVOC and lower volatility organic compounds. VOC emissions are expected to be much larger than expected and larger than Europe and North America.

Abstract: International audience; In-situ formation of pure olivine NaFePO4 from chemically synthesized LiFePO4 nanoparticles via an electrochemical ion-exchange route in sodium salt containing aqueous electrolyte is reported. Both in-situ electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) and in-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements are performed to monitor the formation of NaFePO4. Subsequently, a rechargeable Na-ion aqueous polysulfide battery is demonstrated where NaFePO4 and dissolved Na2S5 solution are used as cathode and anolyte, respectively; and are separated from each other by an ion-exchange polymeric membrane. In order to prevent diffusion of Na2S5 polysulfide from the anode to the cathode side, salt concentration at both sides of the NaFePO4||Na2S5 full cell is finely tuned resulting a 45 mAh g−1 cycling capacity over 200 cycles.

Abstract: Photovoltaics is amongst the most important technologies for renewable energy sources, and plays a key role in the development of a society with a smaller environmental footprint. Key parameters for solar cells are their energy conversion efficiency, their operating lifetime, and the cost of the energy obtained from a photovoltaic system compared to other sources. The optimization of these aspects involves the exploitation of new materials and development of novel solar cell concepts and designs. Both theoretical modeling and characterization of such devices require a comprehensive view including all scales from the atomic to the macroscopic and industrial scale. The different length scales of the electronic and optical degrees of freedoms specifically lead to an intrinsic need for multiscale simulation, which is accentuated in many advanced photovoltaics concepts including nanostructured regions. Therefore, multiscale modeling has found particular interest in the photovoltaics community, as a tool to advance the field beyond its current limits. In this article, we review the field of multiscale techniques applied to photovoltaics, and we discuss opportunities and remaining challenges. © T. Abstract: The gene of Thermotoga maritima GH10 xylanase (TmXYN10B) was synthesised to study the extreme limits of this hyperthermostable enzyme at high temperatures in the presence of biomass-dissolving hydrophilic ionic liquids (ILs). TmXYN10B expressed from Pichia pastoris showed maximal activity at 100 °C and retained 92 % of maximal activity at 105 °C in a 30-min assay. Although the temperature optimum of activity was lowered by 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([EMIM]OAc), TmXYN10B retained partial activity in 15–35 % hydrophilic ILs, even at 75–90 °C. TmXYN10B retained over 80 % of its activity at 90 °C in 15 % [EMIM]OAc and 15–25 % 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dimethylphosphate ([EMIM]DMP) during 22-h reactions. [EMIM]OAc may rigidify the enzyme and lower Vmax. However, only minor changes in kinetic parameter Km showed that competitive inhibition by [EMIM]OAc of TmXYN10B is minimal. In conclusion, when extended enzymatic reactions under extreme conditions are required, TmXYN10B shows extraordinary potential. Abstract: International audience; A cyclotriphosphazene substituted with six 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl) benzyloxy units was designed as a novel 19F MRI contrast agent. The resulting molecule has 36 magnetically equivalent fluorine atoms and exhibited suitable MRI properties with high imaging sensitivity, confirming the proof-of-concept as a convenient scaffold for the production of new 19F MRI contrasts agents.

Abstract: International audience; This paper proposes a novel extension of morphological attribute profiles (APs) for classification of remote sensing data. In standard AP-based approaches, an input image is characterized by a set of filtered images achieved from the sequential application of attribute filters based on the image tree representation. Hence, only pixel values (i.e. gray levels) are employed to form the output profiles. In this paper, during the attribute filtering process, instead of outputting the gray levels, we propose to extract both statistical and geometrical features from the connected components (w.r.t tree nodes) to build the so-called feature profiles (FPs). These features are expected to better characterize the object or region encoded by each connected component. They are then exploited to classify remote sensing images. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, supervised classification using the random forest classifier is conducted on the panchromatic Reykjavik image as well as the hyperspectral Pavia University data. Experimental results show the FPs provide a competitive performance compared against standard APs and thus constitute a promising alternative.

Abstract: International audience; Herein, the electrochemical performance of a new sodium-based aqueous rechargeable battery is demonstrated consisting of Na0.44MnO2 as cathode and dissolved sodium polysulfide (i.e., Na2S5) as anolyte. Na0.44MnO2 synthesized through a solid-state reaction method and dissolved Na2S5 anolyte are tested separately in a half-cell configuration, both giving rise to stable cycling performances. As the anode side of the desired full-cell configuration is at present dissolved in the electrolyte, the positive and negative electrodes need to be separated with an ion-selective membrane that is permeable to sodium ions and impermeable to polysulfide species. Hence, Nafion is tested as a barrier to prevent the leakage of the dissolved polysulfides. After careful tuning of the osmotic pressure inside the Nafion membrane, leakage of the dissolved polysulfide from the anode to the cathode side is eliminated, resulting in a 0.8V average voltage, low-cost sodium-ion aqueous cell.

Abstract: The Montgomery algorithm is a fast modular multiplication method frequently used in cryptographic applications. This paper investigates the digit-serial implementations of the Montgomery algorithm for large integers. A detailed analysis is given and a tight upper bound is presented for the intermediate results obtained during the digit-serial computation. Based on this analysis, an efficient digit-serial Montgomery modular multiplier architecture using carry save adders is proposed and its complexity is presented. In this architecture, pipelined carry select adders are used to perform two final tasks: adding carry save vectors representing the modular product and subtracting the modulus from this addition, if further reduction is needed. The proposed architecture can be designed for any digit size $\delta $ and modulus $\theta $ . This paper also presents logic formulas for the bits of the precomputation $-\theta ^{-1}\bmod 2^{\delta }$ used in the Montgomery algorithm for $\delta \leq 8$ . Finally, evaluation of the proposed architecture on Virtex 7 FPGAs is presented.

Abstract: International audience; Phthalonitrile and benzaldehyde bearing α-nitronyl and α-imino nitroxide free radicals have been synthesized as precursors of nitroxide substituted phthalocyanine and porphyrin macrocycles. To ascertain the structure and radical type they have been characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography and by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR). Their EPR spectra coincide with those reported for previous nitroxides and are in good agreement with literature. Electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy (ESI) was used as a complementary and an alternative technique. Depending on the nature of the radical, two ionization behaviors have been underscored; imino radicals were detected as the [MH2]+ cation ions and nitroxide radicals were detected as the [MH]+˙ radical cations. This differentiation is pointed out as an efficient and rapid method for preliminary characterization of the radical moieties and a judicious technique that allows the prompt detection of radicals at low concentration and straightforward confirmation of the structure.

Abstract: International audience; The present work is on the synthesis and characterization of vertically aligned ZnO nanostructures sheltered by electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (ERGO), i.e., ZnO@ERGO, which are directly generated on quartz resonators of microbalance sensors. The vertical orientation of the ZnO nanorods is achieved by a two‐step synthesis method involving an electrochemically grown seed layer and a subsequent hydrothermal growth. Deposited ERGO thin layer turns out to be highly effective to enhance the electrochemical performances of vertically oriented ZnO nanorods as supercapacitor electrodes. The interfacial charge storage mechanism of ZnO@ERGO electrodes with unique architecture is first studied by classical electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM), showing a global cation‐exchange behavior in Na2SO4 electrolyte. A complementary technique, electrogravimetric impedance spectroscopy, is then used to deconvolute the EQCM response into individual contributions from Na+·H2O, SO42−, and H2O molecules, offering a quantitative picture of each participant in the charge balance process with their transfer kinetics.

Abstract: International audience; Five Tb3+/Eu3+ mixed nonanuclear clusters with the general formula [Eu9–xTbx(acac)16(µ3-OH)8(µ4-O)(µ4-OH)] ([Eu9–xTbx], x = 0.9–8.1, acac = acetylacetonate) were synthesized. Characterization by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) highlight a near-perfect match between the amounts of Tb3+ and Eu3+ ions input in the reaction mixture and the amounts in the clusters. The luminescence properties of these [Eu9–xTbx] clusters were investigated thoroughly in the solid state, and a strong energy transfer from the Tb3+ to Eu3+ emitters was evidenced. Thus, these nano-nonanuclear 4f clusters, which can be viewed as square pyramids that share one top, exhibit dual luminescence that can be adjusted by controlling the ratio of the lanthanide ions within the crystal architecture.

Abstract: We describe a photochemical method to introduce a single alcohol function directly on cucurbit[n]urils (n = 5, 6, 7, 8) with conversions of the order 95-100% using hydrogen peroxide and UV light. The reaction was easily scaled up to 1 g for CB[6] and CB[7]. Spin trapping of cucurbituril radicals combined with MS experiments allowed us to get insights about the reaction mechanism and characterize CB[5], CB[6], CB[7], and CB[8] monofunctional compounds. Experiments involving 18O isotopically labeled water indicated that the mechanism was complex and showed signs of both radical and ionic intermediates. DFT calculations allowed estimating the Bond Dissociation Energies (BDEs) of each hydrogen atom type in the CB series, providing an explanation of the higher reactivity of the "equatorial" C-H position of CB[n] compounds. These results also showed that, for CB[8], direct functionalization on the cucurbituril skeleton is more difficult because one of the methylene hydrogen atoms (Hb) has its BDE lowering within the series and coming close to that of Hc, thus opening the way to other types of free radicals generated on the CB[8] skeleton leading to several side products. Yet CB[5]-(OH)1 and CB[8]-(OH)1, the first CB[8] derivative, were obtained in excellent yields thanks to the soft method presented here.

Abstract: International audience; Room-temperature sodium-based batteries have the potential for meeting large-scale grid energy storage needs. Inspired by the advancement of the design and building of electrode materials in lithium ion batteries, improved nano-architectured electrodes can be created for sodium-ion batteries, allowing increased electron transport kinetics and conductivities. Here, nanocomposites with 3D porous structures are reported as a high-capacity anode material for sodium-ion batteries by using an easy, low-cost and environmentally friendly synthesis of pyrolyzed bacterial celluloses (PBCs). Bacterial celluloses (BCs) produced by the Gluconacetobacter xylinus strain are pyrolyzed at 500, 750 and 1000 A degrees C, resulting 50, 130 and 110 mAh g(-1) capacities over 80 numbers of cycles, respectively, in the presence of the binary ethylene carbonate-propylene carbonate mixture. In order to increase the cell performances, in situ coated SnO2 nanoparticles with bacterial cellulose (SnO2@PBC) are produced by addition as synthesized 5-nm-sized SnO2 nanoparticles into the BC growth medium together with the G. xylinus strain. Following the pyrolysis at 500 A degrees C, the SnO2@PBC composite is better able to handle the accommodation of the dramatic volume change of the incorporated SnO2 nanoparticles because of the interaction of oxygen-containing moieties of bacterial cellulose nanofibrils with the SnO2 nanoparticles during cellulose production. The resulting SnO2@PBC composite presents highly stable capacity retention of around 400 mAh g(-1) capacities at C/10 current density over 50 numbers of cycles.

Abstract: International audience; In this work, the synthesis and the nonlinear absorption and population dynamics investigation of a series of zinc phthalocyanines (ZnPcs) dissolved in chloroform are reported. In order to determine the relevant spectroscopic parameters, such as absorption cross-sections of singlet and triplet excited states, fluorescence relaxation times, intersystem crossing, radiative decay and internal conversion, different optical and spectroscopic techniques were used. By single pulse and pulse train Z-scan techniques, respectively, singlet and triplet excited states‘ absorption cross-section were determined at 532 nm. Furthermore, the intersystem crossing time was obtained by using both techniques combined with the fluorescence lifetime determined by time-resolved fluorescence. The radiative and internal conversion rates were determined from the fluorescence quantum yield of the samples. Such spectroscopy parameters are fundamental for selecting photosensitizers used in photodynamic therapy, as well as for many other applications.

Abstract: The (15-oxo-3,7,11-triazadispiro[5.1.5.3]hexadec-7-yl)oxidanyl, a bis-spiropiperidinium nitroxide derived from TEMPONE, can be included in cucurbit[7]uril to form a strong (Ka ∼ 2 × 105 M−1) CB[7]@bPTO complex. EPR and MS spectra, DFT calculations, and unparalleled increased resistance (a factor of ∼103) toward ascorbic acid reduction show evidence of deep inclusion of bPTO inside CB[7]. The unusual shape of the CB[7]@bPTO EPR spectrum can be explained by an anisotropic Brownian rotational diffusion, the global tumbling of the complex being slower than rotation of bPTO around its “long molecular axis” inside CB[7]. The CB[7] (stator) with the encapsulated bPTO (rotator) behaves as a supramolecular paramagnetic rotor with increased rotational speed of the rotator that has great potential for advanced nanoscale machines requiring wheels such as cucurbiturils with virtually no friction between the wheel and the axle for optimum wheel rotation (i.e. nanopulleys and nanocars)., Nanoscale, 7 (28), ISSN:2040-3364, ISSN:2040-3372

Abstract: International audience; A three step, one-pot reaction has been developed for the introduction of the formyl functional group to the mesa position of porphyrins. Symmetric meso-tetrakis(4-formylphenyl)porphyrin ((CHO)(4)TPPH2), an important cornerstone in porphyrin chemistry, was obtained selectively in good yields via bromine-lithium exchange and subsequent Bouveault reaction. The meso-tetrakis(4-formylphenyl)porphyrin was fully characterized by HR-ESI, UV-vis, NMR, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract: International audience; In this study, we focus on is the enhancement of singlet oxygen generation, which can be promoted by the introduction of heavy atoms on the photosensitizer. Metalation of tetrapyrrole core by heavy atoms such as platinum or palladium is another option but these metals tend to aggravate the aggregation tendency of the macrocycle. Halogenation proved to be much more successful on photosensitizing phthalocyanine [1] and BOPDIPY [2]. Besides, our recent systematic study on monohalogenated trihydroxylated porphyrins [3] demonstrated that the effect of iodination on photoproperties is extremely positive, without significantly modifying the amphiphilicity of the molecules, another important parameter that directly affects cellular uptake. On another hand, we recently designed and demonstrated the efficiency of the amphiphilic porphyrin 1 which exhibited excellent phototoxicity [4]. To further enhance the PDT efficiency, we decided to introduce three iodine atoms on the structure of 1. The relevance of the design of resultant porphyrin 2 (Fig. 1) was assessed by determining its photoproperties and its in vitro phototoxicity [5].

Abstract: International audience; A one-step method to access to functionalized heteroleptic lanthanide double-decker complexes of phthalocyanine of A7B-type is reported. This optimized statistical method led to two hydroxylated model europium complexes, one of which was further converted into its mesylated and azido derivatives.
