Abstract Introduction The eye consists of both internal and external compartments. Several variables, including microbes, dust, and high temperatures can cause eye illnesses that can result in blindness. Bacterial eye infections continue to be a major cause of ocular morbidity and blindness, and their prevalence is periodically rising. The objective of the study was to detect bacterial pathogens and assess their susceptibility profiles to antibiotics in the ophthalmology unit of Boru-meda Hospital in Dessie, Ethiopia. Methods A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted from February 1 to April 30, 2021, among 319 study participants with symptomatic ocular or peri-ocular infections who were enrolled using a consecutive sampling technique. After proper specimen collection, the specimen was immediately inoculated with chocolate, blood, and MacConkey agar. After pure colonies were obtained, they were identified using standard microbiological methods. The Kirby Bauer disk diffusion method was used to test antimicrobial susceptibility patterns, based on the guidelines of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute. Results The majority of participants developed conjunctivitis 126 (39.5%), followed by blepharitis 47 (14.73%), and dacryocystitis 45 (14.1%). Overall, 164 (51.4%) participants were culture positive, six (1.9%) participants had mixed bacterial isolates, giving a total of 170 bacterial isolates with an isolation rate of 53.3%. The predominant species was CoNS 47 (27.6%), followed by S. aureus 38 (22.4%) and Moraxella species 32 (18.8%). The overall Multi-Drug Resistance (MDR) rate was 62.9%, with 33 (44.6%) being gram-negative and 74 (77.1%) being gram-positive isolates. Conclusion Conjunctivitis was the dominant clinical case and CoNS, was the predominant isolate. A higher rate of MDR isolates, particularly gram-positive ones, was observed. Efficient peri-ocular or ocular bacterial infection surveillance, including microbiological laboratory data, is necessary for monitoring disease trends.

This study investigates the effect of electromagnetic energy implementation in the use of electric, magnetic, and hybrid nanofluids for enhanced oil recovery. The challenge lies in comprehending the intricate interplay of these factors to enhance the recovery factor (RF) of oil. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of parameters influencing oil recovery at its primary, secondary, and tertiary stages using finite-element-based simulations. Transitioning to the secondary stage, we observe a positive correlation between increasing brine flow rates and heightened RF. In the tertiary stage, a comparative assessment of nanofluids, including magnetite (Fe3O4), zinc oxide (ZnO), and copper oxide (CuO), reveals that enhancing nanofluid concentrations up to 0.001 % positively impacts RF, with Fe3O4 leading the pack at 22.20 %, followed by ZnO at 21.00 %, and CuO at 11.02 %. The introduction of electromagnetic field consistently augments RF for all nanofluids by a minimum of 4.8 %. Furthermore, this study explores the effect of hybrid nanofluids on RF, which tend to exhibit lower RF values. However, the introduction of electromagnetic energy significantly enhances RF for all hybrid nanofluids. The study offers valuable insights into the potential of nanomaterials and electromagnetic methods in the oil and gas industry.

Female and their male partners were selected randomly. The number of participants included from each sex was 3235 totaling 6470. Face-to-face data collection was employed using open data kit (ODK) software. A pre-test was performed before the data collection. Descriptive and analytical statistical analysis was used to compare knowledge and attitudes regarding obstetric danger signs and care. Predictor variables were declared considering a 95% confidence interval, adjusted odds ratio (AOR) and P-value less than 0.05.Results: On average, male and female participants identified at least two obstetric danger signs. More females could mention more antenatal, childbirth, and postnatal danger signs than their male partners. Both females and their male partners who listened to the radio at least once per week had a statistically significant positive attitude towards obstetric care. Nonetheless, both had an almost similar magnitude of attitude towards obstetric care irrespective of belonging to different occupational, educational, and other social strata. Males’ knowledge of danger signs during pregnancy (95% CI = (1.07– 1.62), AOR = 1.32, P < 0.008) and postnatal care (95% CI = (1.16– 1.89), AOR = 1.48, P < 0.002) had a statistically significant association with the females utilization antenatal care (ANC) service, though not delivery care (DC) or postnatal (PNC).Conclusion: There were inequalities in obstetric danger signs knowledge between females and their male partners. Male partners’ knowledge of obstetric danger signs is not only significant during pregnancy and delivery but also has a lasting impact on post-natal service utilization, which underscores the importance of their involvement in maternal healthcare.Keywords: sex, obstetric danger signs, knowledge, attitude, Ethiopia

Identification and recognition of gender-dis aggregated constraints, gender imbalances, differentials in gender roles, and decision-making on agriculture production, technology transfer, and input utilization are essential to the transformation of research output to benefit women and men. This study aimed to assess gender integration in selected agricultural practices and gender division of labor in the Gedeo and Halaba Zones. The study employed a cross-sectional design. The sample respondents were randomly 86 men and 69 women farmers, and a total of 155 farmers were selected to collect the data through triangulation of key informants interviews, focus group discussion, and household survey. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. Data analysis results in the frequency of men and women's participation computed. Different gender participation factors evaluated. According to the data analysis result, the effect of community norms was assessed among 155 respondents, men 54 (34.8%), 0 (0%), and 15 (9.7%), responded as yes, no and undecided, respectively. Similarly, women participants believed that 64 (41.9%), 1 (0.6%), and 36 (23.2%), responded as yes, no and undecided, respectively. Decision-making could affect gender participation. Men 66 (42.6%), 1 (0.6%) and 20 (12.9%) responded as yes, no and undecided, respectively. Likewise, women participants believed that 53 (34.2%), 1 (0.6%) and 15 (9.7%), responded as yes, no, and undecided, respectively. Concerning care workmen 65 (41.9%), 0 (0%) and 21 (135%), responded as yes, no and undecided, respectively. Similarly, women participants believed that 54 (34.8%), 0 (0%) and 15 (9.7%), responded yes, no and undecided, respectively. Average task share of the household is 30%, 15%, 43% and 12% for men, boys, women and girls, respectively. Women and men performed a larger share of the gender role in rural households than boys and girls. The reproductive work of women in the household covered 67% of the total household care work. The gender participation index in selected agricultural practices was 0.709. However, the Participation Index of men was found to be 0.55 and that of women was 0.45. According to this statistical result, household members spent agricultural labor hours differently, as converting this labor share into daily labor hours indicated that women, men, boys, and girls are spending 10, 7, 4 and 3 hours per day on average, respectively.

Abstract Arsenic contamination not only complicates mineral processing but also poses environmental and health risks. To address these challenges, this research investigates the feasibility of utilizing Hyperspectral imaging combined with machine learning techniques for the identification of arsenic-containing minerals in copper ore samples, with a focus on practical application in sorting and processing operations. Through experimentation with various copper sulfide ores, Neighborhood Component Analysis (NCA) was employed to select essential wavelength bands from Hyperspectral data, subsequently used as inputs for machine learning algorithms to identify arsenic concentrations. Results demonstrate that by selecting a subset of informative bands using NCA, accurate mineral identification can be achieved with a significantly reduced the size of dataset, enabling efficient processing and analysis. Comparison with other wavelength selection methods highlights the superiority of NCA in optimizing classification accuracy. Specifically, the identification accuracy showed 91.9% or more when utilizing 8 or more bands selected by NCA and was comparable to hyperspectral data analysis with 204 bands. The findings suggest potential for cost-effective implementation of multispectral cameras in mineral processing operations. Future research directions include refining machine learning algorithms, exploring broader applications across diverse ore types, and integrating hyperspectral imaging with emerging sensor technologies for enhanced mineral processing capabilities.

Abstract Background Food insecurity is a state or condition in which people have limited or uncertain physical, social, and economic access to safe, sufficient, and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs. Since no thorough evaluation was carried out to determine the degree of household food insecurity in Tigrayan communities in the aftermath of the conflict. This study aims to describe household-level food insecurity status among pregnant and lactating women during the post-armed conflict in Tigray, Ethiopia. Method Descriptive research was designed to assess household food insecurity. A multi-stage sampling technique was used for this study. One thousand two hundred forty-nine households were selected systematically following a list of food insecure households. Descriptive statistical values, including frequency counts, percentages, minimum values, maximum values, and averages, were calculated to quantify the indicators under study. Household food insecurity and hunger Scale measurement using the standardized Food and Agriculture Organization standard. Results The mean age (± SD) of the mothers was 28.35 ± 5.91 years. More than three fourth of the participants 1010(80.93%) were rural residents. The survey result showed that 88.8% of the pregnant and lactating were food insecure. Half (50.1%) of the households were hungry,one month before the study, 78.5% of the families expressed concern about running out of food and 6.4% had severe hunger. Conclusions The food insecurity levels and hunger prestige of the study communities were excessively high. This is in the context of a region affected by intense armed conflict. It is commended that the study communities need to be safeguarded from the direct and long-term consequences of armed conflict-caused household food insecurity.

Abstract Background Preeclampsia (PE), an obstetric disorder, remains one of the leading causes of maternal and infant mortality worldwide. In individuals with PE, the coagulation-fibrinolytic system is believed to be among the most significantly impacted systems due to maternal inflammatory responses and immune dysfunction. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the association of prothrombin time (PT), thrombin time (TT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) levels with preeclampsia. Methods This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. Articles relevant to the study, published from July 26, 2013, to July 26, 2023, were systematically searched across various databases including PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Hinari. The methodological quality of the articles was evaluated using the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal checklist. Utilizing Stata version 14.0, a random-effects model was employed to estimate the pooled standardized mean difference (SMD) along with the respective 95% CIs. The I2 statistics and Cochrane Q test were utilized to assess heterogeneity, while subgroup analyses were performed to explore its sources. Furthermore, Egger’s regression test and funnel plot were employed to assess publication bias among the included studies. Results A total of 30 articles, involving 5,964 individuals (2,883 with PE and 3,081 as normotensive pregnant mothers), were included in this study. Abstract The limited engagement of farmers and their community agents in the process of variety development and evaluation is one of the main factors for lower rates of variety adoption, which resulted in lower crop productivity. Participatory bread wheat variety evaluation was jointly conducted by breeders, members of seed producer cooperative (SPC) and local experts with the objectives to identify farmers’ selection criteria, to assess farmers’ preferred varieties and to increase the SPC’s variety portfolios. Twelve released bread wheat varieties were evaluated during 2019 cropping season at Sekela district of Amhara region, Ethiopia. Pair-wise ranking was used to identify farmers’ selection criteria and direct matrix ranking to prioritize those selected criteria. Varieties were planted in two sets with and without lime application. Grain yield, followed by earliness, disease tolerance, and tillering capacity, was identified the first preferred criterion by farmers. The mean values showed that higher yield was recorded with the lime application compared to no lime application. Lemu (6.4 t/ha), Alidoro (6.3 t/ha), Dambal (6.3 t/ha), Obora (6.1 t/ha) and Liben (6.1 t/ha) had greater yield with lime application. The t-test results indicated that significant difference between with and without liming for the number of tillers per plant, spike length per plant, plant height, 1000 seed weight, and hectoliter weight, but non-significant difference for grain yield. The selected varieties should be included in the production plan of the cooperatives for large scale production to increase the variety portfolios and to address the demand of the farming community.

Abstract Background Bacterial pneumonia can affect all age groups, but people with weakened immune systems, young children, and the elderly are at a higher risk. Streptococcus pneumoniae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are the most common causative agents of pneumonia, and they have developed high MDR in recent decades in Ethiopia. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the pooled prevalence of bacterial pneumonia and multidrug resistance in Ethiopia. Methods The articles were searched extensively in the electronic databases and grey literature using entry terms or phrases. Studies meeting the eligibility criteria were extracted in MS Excel and exported for statistical analysis into STATA version 14 software. The pooled prevalence of bacterial pneumonia and multidrug resistance were calculated using a random-effects model. Heterogeneity was assessed by using the I2 value. Publication bias was assessed using a funnel plot and Egger’s test. A sensitivity analysis was done to assess the impact of a single study on the pooled effect size. Result Of the 651 studies identified, 87 were eligible for qualitative analysis, of which 11 were included in the meta-analysis consisting of 1154 isolates. The individual studies reported prevalence of bacterial pneumonia ranging from 6.19 to 46.3%. In this systematic review and metanalysis, the pooled prevalence of bacterial pneumonia in Ethiopia was 37.17% (95% CI 25.72–46.62), with substantial heterogeneity (I2 = 98.4%, p

Abstract Recent and past studies mainly focus on reducing the dead weight of structure; therefore, they considered lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) which reduces the dead weight but also affects the strength parameters. Therefore, the current study aims to use varied steel wire meshes to investigate the effects of LWAC on mechanical properties. Three types of steel wire mesh are used such as hexagonal (chicken), welded square, and expanded metal mesh, in various layers and orientations in LWAC. Numerous mechanical characteristics were examined, including energy absorption (EA), compressive strength (CS), and flexural strength (FS). A total of ninety prisms and thirty-three cubes were made. For the FS test, forty-five 100 × 100 × 500 mm prism samples were poured, thirty-three 150 × 150 × 150 mm cube samples were made, and forty-five 400 × 300 × 75 mm EA specimens were costed for fourteen days of curing. The experimental findings demonstrate that the FS was enhanced by adding additional forces that spread the forces over the section. One layer of chicken, welded, and expanded metal mesh enhances the FS by 52.96%, 23.76%, and 22.2%, respectively. In comparison to the remaining layers, the FS in a single-layer hexagonal wire mesh has the maximum strength, 29.49 MPa. The hexagonal wire mesh with a single layer had the greatest CS, measuring 36.56 MPa. When all three types of meshes are combined, the CS does not vary in this way and is estimated to be 29.79 MPa. In the combination of three layers, the chicken and expanded wire mesh had the most energy recorded prior to final failure, which was 1425.6 and 1108.7 J, whereas it was found the highest 752.3 J for welded square wire mesh. The energy absorption for the first layer with hexagonal wire mesh increased by 82.81% prior to the crack and by 88.34% prior to the ultimate failure. Overall, it was determined and suggested that hexagonal wire mesh works better than expanded and welded wire meshes.

Abstract Background More than 70% of the health facilities in Tigray, northern Ethiopia, have been totally or partially destroyed by the recent war in the region. Diagnosis and management of tuberculosis were among many health services that suffered. In this study we assess the status of tuberculosis care in health facilities of Tigray during the recent war and compare it with the immediate pre-war state. Methods Using sequential mixed method, we analyzed and compared the availability of diagnostic services in 69 health facilities and the utilization of tuberculosis care in 50 of them immediately before the war (September-October 2020) and during the war (November-July 2021). TB focal persons in each selected health facility were interviewed to evaluate the status of diagnostic services. Patient service utilization was assessed using health facility registrations. We also compared the average monthly case detection rate of multidrug resistant tuberculosis in the region before and during the war. We computed summary statistics and performed comparisons using t-tests. Finally, existing challenges related to tuberculosis care in the region were explored via in-depth interviews. Two investigators openly coded and analyzed the qualitative data independently via thematic analysis. Results Among the 69 health facilities randomly selected, the registers of 19 facilities were destroyed by the war; data from the remaining 50 facilities were included in the TB service utilization analysis. In the first month of the war (November 2021) the number of tuberculosis patients visiting health facilities fell 34%. Subsequently the visitation rate improved steadily, but not to pre-war rates. This reduction was significant in northwest, central and eastern zones. Tuberculosis care in rural areas was hit hardest. Prior to the war 60% of tuberculosis patients were served in rural clinics; this number dropped to an average of 17% during the war. Health facilities were systematically looted. Of the 69 institutions assessed, over 69% of the microscopes in health centers, 87.5% of the microscopes in primary hospitals, and 68% of the microscopes in general hospitals were stolen or damaged. Two GeneXpert nucleic acid amplification machines were also taken from general hospitals. High quality, safe and sufficient drinking water is essential for public health and well-being. However, the war on Tigrai damaged the water sources of communities and pose people to health problems. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to assess the quality of water of the town of Abyi Adi, Tigrai, Northern Ethiopia using physicochemical and biological parameters and water quality indices. A total of 36 water samples were collected from four major water sources. The physicochemical and biological parameters were determined using standard analytical procedures for water analysis. The mean values of electrical conductivity and pH ranged from 273.63 to 881.27 μS/cm and 6.68 to 7.42, respectively. Moreover, the experimental results of major cations (Na+ = 3.70–14.77 mg/L and Ca2+ = 8.50–15.77 mg/L), and anions (HCO3− = 21.52–40.77 mg/L, Cl− = 13.56–40.29 mg/L, NO3− = 0.14–0.25 mg/L, NO2− = 0.24–0.76 mg/L and PO43− = 0.34–1.32 mg/L) were recorded below the World Health Organization (WHO) permissible limits set for drinking water. The water quality index (WQI) that is determined using a weighted arithmetic water quality index method (WAWQIM) was also found in the range of 5.3–37.2. Subsequently, all groundwater sources except Adibakla are classified as excellent or “A” rating. However, the total coliform of Maylomin and Chiny water sources were found to be 6.33 MPN/100 mL and 3.67 MPN/100 mL, respectively. Both are higher than the WHO permissible limit set for drinking water. Considering the susceptibility of groundwater to pollution and its impact to human health, regular monitoring and supervision should be performed to keep the water safe for drinking. Accordingly, chlorination water treatment process is recommended to provide safe drinking water.

Objective To investigate intersectional inequality encompassing socioeconomic, geographical and demographic variables in the use of competent birth and postnatal care services in Ethiopia.Design Data for the study came from a series of the Ethiopia Demographic and Health Surveys. Four major surveys were taken place between 2000 and 2016 and all were included in the study. 9867, 9075, 10 592 and 9915 live births born 5 years preceding the surveys that were attended by skilled health workers in 2000, 2005, 2011 and 2016, respectively, were included in the study. For the postnatal care, only the 2016 survey was used due to sample size issues in the other surveys, and 3843 women having live births 2 years preceding the survey had complete data, allowing for fitting of a model. Since the outcome measures are binary, the logit model was used. Intersectionality was analysed by entering interactions into models.Settings Population-based representative surveys encompassing all areas of Ethiopia.Participants The study subjects are women of reproductive age who had live births 2 years preceding the 2016 survey (for postnatal care) and live births born 5 years preceding the respective surveys (for birth care).Outcome measures The outcome measures are skilled birth and postnatal care services. The postnatal care was for mothers within the first 2 days of giving birth and did not include care for the newborn. Competent maternal health care services are those that are provided by competent health workers: doctors, nurses, midwives and health officers.Results It was observed that women at the crossroads of multiple axes of advantage and disadvantage had better and worse utilisation, respectively. For example, maternal education and residence intersected and predicted coverage of birth care was the highest among secondary schooling women who dwelt in urban settings with the values of 0.255; 95% CI 0.113 to 0.397 in 2000 and 0.589; 95% CI 0.359 to 0.819 in 2016 but was the lowest among non-educated women who lived in rural areas with the values of 0.0236; 95% CI 0.0154 to 0.0317 in 2000 and 0.203; 95% CI 0.177 to 0.229 in 2016.Conclusions It appeared that some women who were at the intersections of multiple axes of disadvantage had the lowest predicted coverage for maternal health care services. The study suggests that targeted interventions be developed for women who are at the intersection of multiple axes of marginalisation and that multiple sectors work in their sphere of resposibility to tackle social determinants of maternity care inequality. Policymakers may consider using intersectionality to inform development of targeted policies and or strategies. Further, future studies include structural drivers in the analysis of intersectionality to gain a better insight into the causes of disparities.

Introduction: Hypertension has emerged as a significant public health concern, ranking among the leading causes of mortality in low- and middle-income countries. Moreover, it is closely associated with structural and functional alterations in hematopoietic cells. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the hematological parameters of hypertensive patients in Northeast Ethiopia. Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted from January to March 2023, involving 248 participants. This included 124 hypertensive patients and 124 apparently healthy controls selected using a systematic random sampling technique. Socio-demographic and clinical data were collected through a structured questionnaire, and anthropometric measurements were obtained following established guidelines. Ethical approval was obtained from the Ethical Review Committee of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at Wollo University. After obtaining informed consent, approximately 5 ml of venous blood was drawn from each participant for complete blood count and fasting blood glucose analysis, performed using the Mindray BC-3000 Plus hematology analyzer and the DIRUI CS-T240 automated clinical chemistry analyzer, respectively. Floods are one of the most serious natural disasters that can cause huge societal and economic losses. Extensive research has been conducted on topics like flood monitoring, prediction, and loss estimation. In these research fields, flood velocity plays a crucial role and is an important factor that influences the reliability of the outcomes. Traditional methods rely on physical models for flood simulation and prediction and could generate accurate results but often take a long time. Deep learning technology has recently shown significant potential in the same field, especially in terms of efficiency, helping to overcome the time-consuming associated with traditional methods. This study explores the potential of deep learning models in predicting flood velocity. More specifically, we use a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) model, a specific type of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), to predict the velocity in the test area of the Lundesokna River in Norway with diverse terrain conditions. Geographic data and flood velocity simulated based on the physical hydraulic model are used in the study for the pre-training, optimization, and testing of the MLP model. Our experiment indicates that the MLP model has the potential to predict flood velocity in diverse terrain conditions of the river with acceptable accuracy against simulated velocity results but with a significant decrease in training time and testing time. Meanwhile, we discuss the limitations for the improvement in future work.

Abstract Undernutrition in childhood is a crucial public health issue in Ethiopia. Yet, more than an assessment of undernutrition using conventional index is needed to conclude the overall prevalence of undernutrition among children aged 6–23 months. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the prevalence of undernutrition using composite index of anthropometric failure and its associated factors among children aged 6–23 months in Southwest Ethiopia. A community‐based cross‐sectional study was employed among 440 mother–child pairs selected using a two‐stage cluster sampling method in the rural Kersa district, Jimma Zone, Southwest Ethiopia. Abstract Health concerns about the toxicity of arsenic compounds have therefore encouraged the development of new analytical tools for quick monitoring of arsenic in real samples with improved sensitivity, selectivity, and reliability. An overview of advanced optical colorimetric sensor techniques for real-time monitoring of inorganic arsenic species in the environment is given in this review paper. Herein, several advanced optical colorimetric sensor techniques for arsenite (As+3) and arsenate (As+5) based on doping chromogenic dyes/reagents, biomolecule-modified nanomaterials, and arsenic-binding ligand tethered nanomaterials are introduced and discussed. This review also highlights the benefits and limitations of the colorimetric sensor for arsenic species. Finally, prospects and future developments of an optical colorimetric sensor for arsenic species are also proposed. For future study in this sector, particularly for field application, authors recommend this review paper will be helpful for readers to understand the design principles and their corresponding sensing mechanisms of various arsenic optical colorimetric sensors.

Abstract Background Dyslipidemia is responsible for more than half of the global ischemic heart disease (IHD) and more than 4 million deaths annually. Assessing the prevalence of dyslipidemia can be crucial in predicting the future disease development and possible intervention strategies. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis was aimed at assessing the pooled prevalence of dyslipidemia in HIV-infected patients. Methods Electronic databases such as EMBASE, Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science, ResearchGate, Cochrane Library, and Science Direct were searched for articles and grey literature. All relevant studies found until our search period of May 24, 2023 were included. The Newcastle–Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale was used to assess the quality of the included studies. The data were extracted in Microsoft Excel. The STATA version 14 software was used to conduct the meta-analysis. I2 and Cochran’s Q test were employed to assess the presence of heterogeneity between studies. Due to the presence of heterogeneity, a random effect model was used. The publication bias was assessed using the symmetry of the funnel plot and Egger's test statistics. Moreover, subgroup analysis, and sensitivity analysis were also done. Results A total of nine studies that reported the prevalence of dyslipidemia were included. The overall pooled prevalence of dyslipidemia among HIV-infected patients in Ethiopia was 67.32% (95% CI = 61.68%–72.96%). Furthermore, the overall pooled estimates of dyslipidemia among ART-taking and treatment-naïve HIV-infected patients were 69.74% (95% CI: 63.68–75.8, I2 = 87.2) and 61.46% (95% CI: 45.40–77.52, I2 = 90.3), respectively. Based on lipid profile fractionations, the pooled estimates for high total cholesterol (TC) were 39.08% (95% CI: 31.16–46.99), high triglycerides were 38.73% (95% CI: 28.58–48.88), high low density lipoprotein (LDL-c) was 28.40% (95% CI: 17.24–39.56), and low high density lipoprotein (HDL-c) was 39.42% (95% CI: 30.47–48.38). Conclusion More than two-thirds of HIV-infected patients experienced dyslipidemia. Therefore, it's critical to regularly evaluate lipid alterations in HIV-infected patients in order to prevent the onset of atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular problems.

This study aimed to understand the gender-based perception of gender roles and norms, gender relations, social support, and psychosocial variation in maternal health care during pregnancy.Methods: A qualitative study was conducted in three rural districts of Jimma, Ethiopia. Participants were purposefully chosen from the community groups, including male and female health development armies, religious leaders, health extension workers, midwifery nurses, and primary health care unit directors. The data was gathered through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. The actual data was collected by men and women qualitative study experts. Atlas ti Ver 9 was used for the analysis. The data was initially coded then changed to a sub-category and at last converted to a category.Results: Four categories emerged: Gender-based roles and norms, psychosocial variation, social support, and gender relations. The informants described men’s and women’s independent and shared roles improve maternal health care service usage during pregnancy. Once the women became pregnant, men undertook a variety of demanding duties to enhance maternity service consumption. Gender relations and shared decision-making were essential in facilitating maternal healthcare utilization during pregnancy and beyond.Conclusion: This study revealed that maternal health care should not be limited to women alone. Men’s and women’s prior maternal health experiences, in addition to their knowledge and beliefs, have significantly impacted the utilization of maternal healthcare services during pregnancy. Policymakers and academics should consider men’s essential contribution to maternal health care during pregnancy. A feeding trial was conducted with the objective of evaluating the effect of replacing wheat bran with cactus pear meal on feed intake, digestibility, growth performance and carcass characteristics of Tigray highland sheep fed a basal diet of mixed grass hay. Twenty uncastrated, growing male sheep (14.56 ± 1.54 kg) were used in a randomized complete block design with five treatments in four replications. Wheat bran was replaced with cactus pear meal at a ratio of 0% (T1), 25% (T2), 50% (T3), 75% (T4) and 100% (T5) on a dry matter basis. The data were analysed using SAS statistical tools. The result showed that there was no statistical difference in feed intake, body weight gain, feed conversion efficiency, digestibility or carcass characteristics among the dietary treatments (P > 0.05). However, crude protein intake was slightly higher in the control sheep group than that of the cactus-containing supplement groups (P 0.05). It is concluded that in situations where conventional feeds are neither readily available nor reasonably priced, cactus can be a good substitute for wheat bran as a source of energy for smallholder livestock production.

This paper seeks to examine and reflect the historical exploration of curriculum implementation and the challenges of teacher education development in Ethiopia, particularly focusing on elementary school teacher training. Unlike other areas of educational study, the history of teacher training curriculum and challenges to teacher education development in Ethiopia has not been studied in detail, and the evidence may be insufficient to form a clear picture when it is studied in Africa in general and Ethiopia in particular. For this study, the researchers used a descriptive design, it helps to describe and interpret the educational practices of the teacher training programme through the passage of time. This study was based on using primary data from letters, original research, archival documents, and educational bulletins were used. Whereas secondary sources (documents and research studies). The collected data was analysed using the document analysis technique. The findings revealed that the changes in teacher education in Ethiopia were implemented without a formal needs assessment based on societal needs or deep research findings. Furthermore, when the government formulates general education policies, they do not pay much attention to making the lower primary teacher education strong in terms of budget and fulfilling facilities. Therefore, the main implication of this research for individuals doing research is that in order to have good systems of teacher education, thinking and doing research related to teacher education helps to strengthen the teaching profession and teacher professionalism.

Maximizing the use of explosives is crucial for optimizing blasting operations, significantly influencing productivity and cost-effectiveness in mining activities. This work explores the incorporation of machine learning methods to predict powder factor, a crucial measure for assessing the effectiveness of explosive deployment, using important rock characteristics. The goal is to enhance the accuracy of powder factor prediction by employing machine learning methods, namely decision tree models and artificial neural networks. The analysis finds key rock factors that have a substantial impact on the powder factor, hence enabling more accurate planning and execution of blasting operations. The analysis uses data from 180 blast rounds carried out at a dolomite mine in south-south Nigeria. It incorporates measures such as root mean square error (RSME), mean absolute error (MAE), R-squared (R2), and variance accounted for (VAF) to determine the best models for predicting powder factor. The results indicate that the decision tree model (MD4) outperforms alternative approaches, such as artificial neural networks and Gaussian Process Regression (GPR). In addition, the research presents an efficient artificial neural network equation (MD2) for estimating the values of optimum powder factor, demonstrating outstanding blasting fragmentation. In conclusion, this research provides significant information for improving the accuracy of powder factor prediction, which is especially advantageous for small-scale blasting operations.

Edible indigenous fruit trees and shrubs (IFTS) serve as crucial sources of supplementary food and essential nutrients, income/cash, traditional medicine, and various other uses for local communities in Tigray, Ethiopia. However, there is limited documentation on IFTS contributions, production potential, and nutritional compositions. The primary aim of this study was to analyse the production potential, nutritional compositions, and overall contributions of IFTS to rural households. Data were gathered through structured and semi-structured questionnaires from 55 key informants, 15 vendors, and 30 consumers. Nutrient analyses were conducted using triplicate samples following the basic procedures of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists. This study has identified and documented 44 IFTS species. These edible fruits from trees and shrubs are available throughout the year, with peak seasons varying across agroecological zones. Specifically, the lowland, midland, and highland experienced peak fruit availability in November, May, and June, respectively. Fruit yields exhibited significant variation among agroecological zones (P = 0.001), and among growth stages (P < 0.001) within each agroecological zone. Further laboratory analysis revealed that edible IFTS are rich in carbohydrates, crude fiber, crude protein, crude fat, iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) contents. These nutritional attributes underline the importance of integrating indigenous fruits into the diets of rural and urban households. In conclusion, this research highlights the significant roles played by edible IFTS in the livelihoods of rural households in Tigray, Ethiopia. It also suggests the need for their recognition, conservation, domestication and restoration to enhance food security, income generation, climate adaptation and overall well-being in these communities and beyond.

Background: Although tuberculosis is highly prevalent in low- and middle-income countries, millions of cases remain undetected using current diagnostic methods. To address this problem, researchers have proposed prediction rules. Objective: We analyzed existing prediction rules for the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis and identified factors with a moderate to high strength of association with the disease. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of relevant databases (MEDLINE/PubMed, Cochrane Library, Science Direct, Global Health for Reports, and Google Scholar) up to 14 November 2022. Studies that developed diagnostic algorithms for pulmonary tuberculosis in adults from low and middle-income countries were included. Two reviewers performed study screening, data extraction, and quality assessment. The study quality was assessed using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2. We performed a narrative synthesis. Results: Of the 26 articles selected, only half included human immune deficiency virus-positive patients. In symptomatic human immune deficiency virus patients, radiographic findings and body mass index were strong predictors of pulmonary tuberculosis, with an odds ratio of >4. However, in human immune deficiency virus-negative individuals, the biomarkers showed a moderate association with the disease. In symptomatic human immune deficiency virus patients, a C-reactive protein level ⩾10 mg/L had a sensitivity and specificity of 93% and 40%, respectively, whereas a trial of antibiotics had a specificity of 86% and a sensitivity of 43%. In smear-negative patients, anti-tuberculosis treatment showed a sensitivity of 52% and a specificity of 63%. Conclusions: The performance of predictors and diagnostic algorithms differs among patient subgroups, such as in human immune deficiency virus-positive patients, radiographic findings, and body mass index were strong predictors of pulmonary tuberculosis. However, in human immune deficiency virus-negative individuals, the biomarkers showed a moderate association with the disease. A few models have reached the World Health Organization’s recommendation. Therefore, more work should be done to strengthen the predictive models for tuberculosis screening in the future, and they should be developed rigorously, considering the heterogeneity of the population in clinical work.

Summary: Background: Exposure to multiple risk factors is prevalent in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs), challenging one-directional strategies to address preventable under-5 mortality (U5M). This study aims to assess the associations between concurrence of multiple risk factors and U5M in LMICs. Methods: We extracted data from the Demographic and Health Surveys conducted between 2010 and 2021 across 61 LMICs. Our primary outcome was U5M, defined as deaths from birth to 59 months. Binary logistic regression model was applied to ascertain the association between U5M and a total of 20 critical risk factors. Upon identifying the risk factors demonstrating the strongest associations, we investigated the simultaneous presence of multiple risk factors in each individual and assessed their combined effects on U5M with logistic regression models. Findings: Of the 604,372 under-5 children, 18,166 (3.0%) died at the time of the survey. IntroductionHepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and liver cirrhosis (LC) stand as the primary causes of global mortality. Given their profound impact, the development of highly sensitive and specific circulating diagnostic markers becomes imperative to effectively identify and differentiate between cirrhosis and HCC. Accurate diagnosis is paramount in guiding appropriate therapeutic interventions. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate the potential of microRNAs (miRNAs) in discerning between HCC and LC.MethodsThis study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, with the protocol officially registered on PROSPERO under the reference number CRD42023417494. A thorough search across multiple databases like PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Wiley Online Library, and Science Direct was conducted to identify relevant studies published from January 1, 2018, to August 10, 2023. The included studies underwent methodological quality assessment using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies 2 (QADAS-2) tool. The synthesis of pooled sensitivity, specificity, and other relevant diagnostic parameters employed a random-effects model and was conducted using Stata 14.0. Heterogeneity was assessed using I2 and Cochrane Q, with subsequent subgroup analysis and meta-regression performed to identify potential sources of observed heterogeneity. A sensitivity analysis was performed to assess the resilience of the findings. Furthermore, Deeks’ funnel plot was employed to evaluate publication bias.ResultsIn this meta-analysis, we included fifteen publications, encompassing 787 HCC patients and 784 LC patients. The combined sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio (PLR), negative likelihood ratio (NLR), diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), and area under the curve (AUC) values of miRNAs in differentiating HCC from LC were 0.84 (95% CI: 0.78–0.88), 0.79 (95% CI: 0.73–0.84), 3.9 (95% CI: 3.0–5.2), 0.21 (95% CI: 0.14–0.29), 19.44 (95% CI: 11–34), and 0.88 (95% CI: 0.85–0.91), respectively. Abstract Introduction Noma, an overlooked infectious disease, inflicts severe facial tissue damage, posing substantial challenges in patient care. This study delves into surgical complications and subsequent revision surgeries among noma cases treated in Ethiopia. Materials and Methods The research employed a cross‐sectional retrospective review of medical records treated between 2007 and 2019 retrieved from the Facing Africa database. Results The review encompasses 235 noma cases. Twenty‐four cases (19 females and 5 males) experienced various complications, predominately major complications leading to subsequent revision surgeries. The identified complications included flap necrosis, abscess formation, tenderness, graft site infection, flap bulking, dental misalignment, corner of the mouth dehiscence, infected bone and plate, flap malpositioning, restricted mouth opening with ankylosis, neuropathic pain, recurrent flap infection, and offensive odor. Revision surgeries included wound cleansing, abscess drainage, skin graft removal, exploratory surgery, wound care, debulking, scar removal, debridement, trismus release, commisuroplasty, and flap repositioning. Conclusion These findings illuminate the intricacies of noma surgery in Ethiopia, emphasizing the importance of understanding the nature and frequency of complications for optimizing treatment outcomes. Insights from this study can guide healthcare providers, especially novice surgeons, and policymakers, in refining surgical interventions and enhancing outcomes for noma patients. Improved knowledge in this realm is crucial for advancing patient care and developing targeted interventions. Level of Evidence 5.

IntroductionAggregate statistics of maternal health care services have improved in Ethiopia. Nevertheless, the country has one of the lowest Universal Health Coverage (UHC) service coverage indices, with slight improvement between 2000 and 2019. There are disparity studies that focus on a single dimension of inequality. However, studies that combine multiple dimensions of inequality simultaneously may have important policy implications for closing inequalities. In this study, we investigated education inequalities in the receipt of maternal health care services in rural and urban areas separately, and we examined whether these inequalities decreased, increased, or remained unchanged.MethodsThe data for the study came from the 2011 and 2016 Ethiopia Demographic and Health Surveys. Using women's education as a dimension of inequality, we separately analyzed inequalities in maternal health care services in urban and rural settings. Inequalities were measured through the Erreygers concentration index, second differences, and Relative Index of Inequality (RII). Whether inequalities changed over time was analyzed by relative and absolute measures. An Oaxaca-type decomposition approach was applied to explain changes in absolute disparities over time.ResultsThere were glaring educational disparities in maternal health care services in urban and rural areas, where the services were more concentrated among women with better schooling. The disparities were more severe in urban than in rural areas. In urban areas, skilled birth service was the most unequal in both periods. Disparities in rural places were roughly similar for all services except that in 2011, postnatal care was the least unequal, and in 2016, skilled birth was the most unequal services. Trend analyses revealed that disparities significantly dropped in urban by absolute and relative measures. Conversely, in rural regions, the disparities grew by the concentration index measure for most services. The RII and second differences presented conflicting results regarding whether the gaps were increasing, shrinking, or remaining the same.ConclusionSubstantial disparities in maternal health care services remained and even increased, as in rural areas. Different and targeted strategies are needed for urban and rural places to close the observed educational inequalities in these areas.

BACKGROUND: Childhood wheeze, asthma, and allergic rhinitis are common and likely have prenatal origins. Oxidative stress is associated with respiratory disease, but the association of oxidative stress during the prenatal period with development of respiratory and atopic disease in childhood, particularly beyond the infancy period, is unknown. This study aims to investigate associations between prenatal oxidative stress, measured by maternal urinary F2-isoprostanes, and child respiratory outcomes, including effect modification by maternal race. METHODS: We prospectively studied Black (n = 717) and White (n = 363) mother-child dyads. We measured F2-isoprostanes in 2nd-trimester urine (ng/mg-creatinine). At approximately age 4, we obtained parent report of provider-diagnosed asthma (ever), current wheeze, current asthma (diagnosis, symptoms and/or medication), and current allergic rhinitis (current defined as previous 12 months). We used multivariable logistic regression to estimate adjusted odds ratios (aOR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) per interquartile range (IQR) increase in F2-isoprostane concentration, controlling for confounders. We examined modification by maternal race using interaction terms. RESULTS: The prevalence of provider-diagnosed asthma and current wheeze, asthma and allergic rhinitis was 14%, 19%, 15%, and 24%, respectively. Median (IQR) F2-isoprostane levels were 2.1 (1.6, 2.9) ng/mg-creatinine. Associations between prenatal F2-isoprostanes and provider-diagnosed asthma, current wheeze, and current asthma were modified by maternal race. Results were strongest for current wheeze (aOR [95%CI]: 1.55 [1.16, 2.06] for White; 0.98 [0.78, 1.22] for Black; p-interaction = 0.01). We observed no association between F2-isoprostanes and allergic rhinitis. CONCLUSION: Prenatal urinary F2-isoprostanes may be a marker associated with childhood wheeze/asthma in certain populations. Research is needed to understand underlying mechanisms and racial differences.

BACKGROUND: Postnatal exposures, including breastfeeding, may influence asthma development. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between breastfeeding duration and child asthma. METHODS: We studied 2021 mother-child dyads in the ECHO PATHWAYS consortium of prospective pregnancy cohorts (GAPPS, CANDLE, TIDES). Women reported the duration of any and exclusive breastfeeding and child asthma outcomes during follow-up at child age 4 to 6 years. Outcomes included current wheeze (previous 12 months), ever asthma, current asthma (having ≥2 of current wheeze, ever asthma, medication use in past 12-24 months), and strict current asthma (ever asthma with either or both current wheeze and medication use in past 12-24 months). We used multivariable logistic regression to assess associations (odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals) between breastfeeding and asthma outcomes adjusting for potential confounders. We assessed effect modification by mode of delivery, infant sex, and maternal asthma. RESULTS: Among women, 33%, 13%, 9%, and 45% reported 0 to less than 2, 2 to 4, 5 to 6, and more than 6 months of any breastfeeding, respectively. The duration of any breastfeeding had a protective linear trend with ever asthma but no other outcomes. There was a duration-dependent protective association of exclusive breastfeeding and child asthma outcomes (eg, current asthma adjusted odds ratio [95% confidence interval], 0.64 [0.41-1.02], 0.61 [0.38-0.98], and 0.52 (0.31-0.87) for 2to 4 months, 5 to 6 months, and more than 6 months, respectively, compared with
