The stellar dynamic-based black hole mass measurements of M87 are twice that determined via ionized gas kinematics; the former is closer to the estimation from the diameter of the gravitationally-lensed ring around the black hole. Using deeper and more comprehensive ionized gas kinematic data, we aim to better constrain the morphology and kinematics of the nuclear ionized gas, thus gaining insights into the reasons behind the disagreement of the measurements. We use both Narrow and Wide Field Mode integral field spectroscopic data from the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer instrument, to model the morphology and kinematics of multiple ionized gas emission lines in the nucleus of M87. The new deep dataset reveals complexities in the nuclear ionized gas kinematics. Several ionized gas filaments can be traced down into the projected sphere of influence. We also found evidence of a partially-filled biconical outflow. The velocity isophotes of the ionized gas disk are twisted and the position angle of the innermost gas disk tends toward a value perpendicular to the radio jet axis. The complexity of the nuclear morphology and kinematics precludes the measurement of an accurate black hole mass. The results support a 6.0 $\times 10^{9}\rm M_{\odot}$ black hole in a 25\deg disk, rather than a 3.5 $\times 10^{9}\rm M_{\odot}$ black hole in a 42\deg disk. The specific RIAF model earlier proposed to reconcile the mass measurement discrepancy was also tested. In general, Keplerian disk models perform better than the RIAF model when fitting the sub-arcsec ionized gas disk. A disk inclination close to 25\deg for the nuclear gas disk, and the warp in the sub-arcsec ionized gas disk, help to reconcile the contradictory nature of the mass discrepancy between stellar and ionized gas black hole masses, and the mis-orientation between the axes of the ionized gas disk and the jet., Comment: 21 pages, 22 figures (5 of them in the appendix). We have extracted 636 spectra taken at the positions of 583 transient sources from the third Data Release of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy eXperiment (HETDEX). The transients were discovered by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) during 2018 - 2022. The HETDEX spectra are useful to classify a large number of objects found by photometric surveys for free. We attempt to explore and classify the spectra by utilizing machine learning (ML) and template matching techniques. We have identified two transient sources, ZTF20aatpoos = AT2020fiz and ZTF19abdkelq as supernova candidates. We classify AT2020fiz as a Type IIP supernova observed ~10 days after explosion, and we propose ZTF19abdkelq as a likely Type Ia SN caught ~40 days after maximum light. ZTF photometry of these two sources are consistent with their classification as supernovae. Beside these two objects, we have confirmed several ZTF transients as variable AGNs based on their spectral appearance, and also determined the host galaxy types for several other ZTF transients., Comment: submitted to ApJ

We present post-cryogenic Spitzer imaging at 3.6 and 4.5 micron with the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) of the Spitzer/HETDEX Exploratory Large-Area (SHELA) survey. SHELA covers $\sim$deg$^2$ of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey "Stripe 82" region, and falls within the footprints of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) and the Dark Energy Survey. The HETDEX blind R $\sim$ 800 spectroscopy will produce $\sim$ 200,000 redshifts from the Lyman-$\alpha$ emission for galaxies in the range 1.9 < z < 3.5, and an additional $\sim$200,000 redshifts from the [OII] emission for galaxies at z < 0.5. When combined with deep ugriz images from the Dark Energy Camera, K-band images from NEWFIRM, and other ancillary data, the IRAC photometry from Spitzer will enable a broad range of scientific studies of the relationship between structure formation, galaxy stellar mass, halo mass, AGN, and environment over a co-moving volume of $\sim$0.5 Gpc$^3$ at 1.9 < z < 3.5. Here, we discuss the properties of the SHELA IRAC dataset, including the data acquisition, reduction, validation, and source catalogs. Our tests show the images and catalogs are 80% (50%) complete to limiting magnitudes of 22.0 (22.6) AB mag in the detection image, which is constructed from the weighted sum of the IRAC 3.6 and 4.5 micron images. The catalogs reach limiting sensitivities of 1.1 $\mu$Jy at both 3.6 and 4.5 micron (1$\sigma$, for R=2 arcsec circular apertures). As a demonstration of science, we present IRAC number counts, examples of highly temporally variable sources, and galaxy surface density profiles of rich galaxy clusters. We present the first set of maps and band-merged catalog from the Herschel Stripe 82 Survey (HerS). Observations at 250, 350, and 500 micron were taken with the Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE) instrument aboard the Herschel Space Observatory. HerS covers 79 deg$^2$ along the SDSS Stripe 82 to a depth of 13.0, 12.9, and 14.8 mJy beam$^{-1}$ (including confusion) at 250, 350, and 500 micron, respectively. HerS was designed to measure correlations with external tracers of the dark matter density field --- either point-like (i.e., galaxies selected from radio to X-ray) or extended (i.e., clusters and gravitational lensing) --- in order to measure the bias and redshift distribution of intensities of infrared-emitting dusty star-forming galaxies and AGN. By locating HeRS in Stripe 82, we maximize the overlap with available and upcoming cosmological surveys. The band-merged catalog contains 3.3x10$^4$ sources detected at a significance of >3 $\sigma$ (including confusion noise). Intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs, 10^2-10^5 M_sun) fill the gap between stellar-mass black holes and supermassive black holes (SMBHs). Simulations have shown that IMBHs may form in dense star clusters, and therefore may still be present in these smaller stellar systems. We investigate the Galactic globular cluster NGC 5286 for indications of a central IMBH using spectroscopic data from VLT/FLAMES, velocity measurements from the Rutgers Fabry Perot at CTIO, and photometric data from HST. We run analytic spherical and axisymmetric Jeans models with different central black-hole masses, anisotropy, mass-to-light ratio, and inclination. Further, we compare the data to a grid of N-body simulations without tidal field. Additionally, we use one N-body simulation to check the results of the spherical Jeans models for the total cluster mass. Both the Jeans models and the N-body simulations favor the presence of a central black hole in NGC 5286 and our detection is at the 1- to 1.5-sigma level. From the spherical Jeans models we obtain a best fit with black-hole mass M_BH=(1.5+-1.0)x10^3 M_sun. The error is the 68% confidence limit from Monte Carlo simulations. Axisymmetric models give a consistent result. The best fitting N-body model is found with a black hole of 0.9% of the total cluster mass (4.38+-0.18)x10^5 M_sun, which results in an IMBH mass of M_BH=(3.9+-2.0)x10^3 M_sun. Jeans models give lower values for the total cluster mass. Our test of the Jeans models with N-body simulation data shows that this discrepancy has two reasons: The influence of a radially varying M/L profile, and underestimation of the velocity dispersion as the measurements are limited to bright stars. We conclude that detection of IMBHs in Galactic globular clusters remains a challenging task unless their mass fractions are above those found for SMBHs in nearby galaxies. Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are fundamental keys to understand the formation and evolution of their host galaxies. However, the formation and growth of SMBHs are not yet well understood. One of the proposed formation scenarios is the growth of SMBHs from seed intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs, 10^2 to 10^5 M_{\odot}) formed in star clusters. In this context, and also with respect to the low mass end of the M-sigma relation for galaxies, globular clusters are in a mass range that make them ideal systems to look for IMBHs. Among Galactic star clusters, the massive cluster $\omega$ Centauri is a special target due to its central high velocity dispersion and also its multiple stellar populations. We study the central structure and dynamics of the star cluster $\omega$ Centauri to examine whether an IMBH is necessary to explain the observed velocity dispersion and surface brightness profiles. We perform direct N-body simulations to follow the dynamical evolution of $\omega$ Centauri. The simulations are compared to the most recent data-sets in order to explain the present-day conditions of the cluster and to constrain the initial conditions leading to the observed profiles. We find that starting from isotropic spherical multi-mass King models and within our canonical assumptions, a model with a central IMBH mass of 2% of the cluster stellar mass, i.e. a 5x10^4 M_{\odot} IMBH, provides a satisfactory fit to both the observed shallow cusp in surface brightness and the continuous rise towards the center of the radial velocity dispersion profile. In our isotropic spherical models, the predicted proper motion dispersion for the best-fit model is the same as the radial velocity dispersion one. Intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) are of interest in a wide range of astrophysical fields. In particular, the possibility of finding them at the centers of globular clusters has recently drawn attention. IMBHs became detectable since the quality of observational data sets, particularly those obtained with HST and with high resolution ground based spectrographs, advanced to the point where it is possible to measure velocity dispersions at a spatial resolution comparable to the size of the gravitational sphere of influence for plausible IMBH masses. We present results from ground based VLT/FLAMES spectroscopy in combination with HST data for the globular cluster NGC 6388. The aim of this work is to probe whether this massive cluster hosts an intermediate-mass black hole at its center and to compare the results with the expected value predicted by the $M_{\bullet} - \sigma$ scaling relation. The spectroscopic data, containing integral field unit measurements, provide kinematic signatures in the center of the cluster while the photometric data give information of the stellar density. Together, these data sets are compared to dynamical models and present evidence of an additional compact dark mass at the center: a black hole. Using analytical Jeans models in combination with various Monte Carlo simulations to estimate the errors, we derive (with 68% confidence limits) a best fit black-hole mass of $ (17 \pm 9) \times 10^3 M_{\odot}$ and a global mass-to-light ratio of $M/L_V = (1.6 \pm 0.3) \ M_{\odot}/L_{\odot}$., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

This work aims to study the distribution of luminous and dark matter in Coma early-type galaxies. Dynamical masses obtained under the assumption that mass follows light do not match with the masses of strong gravitational lens systems of similar velocity dispersions. Instead, dynamical fits with dark matter halos are in good agreement with lensing results. We derive mass-to-light ratios of the stellar populations from Lick absorption line indices, reproducing well the observed galaxy colours. Even in dynamical models with dark matter halos the amount of mass that follows the light increases more rapidly with galaxy velocity dispersion than expected for a constant stellar initial mass function (IMF). While galaxies around sigma ~ 200 km/s are consistent with a Kroupa IMF, the same IMF underpredicts luminous dynamical masses of galaxies with sigma ~ 300 km/s by a factor of two and more. A systematic variation of the stellar IMF with galaxy velocity dispersion could explain this trend with a Salpeter IMF for the most massive galaxies. If the IMF is instead constant, then some of the dark matter in high velocity dispersion galaxies must follow a spatial distribution very similar to that of the light. A combination of both, a varying IMF and a component of dark matter that follows the light is possible as well. For a subsample of galaxies with old stellar populations we show that the tilt in the fundamental plane can be explained by systematic variations of the total (stellar + dark) mass inside the effective radius. We analyze six X-ray bright elliptical galaxies, observed with Chandra and XMM-Newton, and approximate their gravitational potentials by isothermal spheres phi(r)=v_c^2 ln(r) over a range of radii from ~0.5 to ~25 kpc. We then compare the circular speed v_c derived from X-ray data with the estimators available from optical data. In particular we discuss two simple and robust procedures for evaluating the circular speed of the galaxy using the observed optical surface brightness and the line-of-sight velocity dispersion profiles. The best fitting relation between the circular speeds derived from optical observations of stars and X-ray observations of hot gas is v_{c,opt}~ \eta * v_{c,X}, where \eta=1.10-1.15 (depending on the method), suggesting, albeit with large statistical and systematic uncertainties, that non-thermal pressure on average contributes ~20-30% of the gas thermal pressure., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures; Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We use oblate axisymmetric dynamical models including dark halos to determine the orbital structure of intermediate mass to massive Coma early-type galaxies. We find a large variety of orbital compositions. Averaged over all sample galaxies the unordered stellar kinetic energy in the azimuthal and the radial direction are of the same order, but they can differ by up to 40 percent in individual systems. In contrast, both for rotating and non-rotating galaxies the vertical kinetic energy is on average smaller than in the other two directions. This implies that even most of the rotating ellipticals are flattened by an anisotropy in the stellar velocity dispersions. Using three-integral axisymmetric toy models we show that flattening by stellar anisotropy maximises the entropy for a given density distribution. Collisionless disk merger remnants are radially anisotropic. The apparent lack of strong radial anisotropy in observed early-type galaxies implies that they may not have formed from mergers of disks unless the influence of dissipational processes was significant., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

Axisymmetric, orbit-based dynamical models are used to derive dark matter scaling relations for Coma early-type galaxies. From faint to bright galaxies halo core-radii and asymptotic circular velocities increase. Compared to spirals of the same brightness, the majority of Coma early-types -- those with old stellar populations -- have similar halo core-radii but more than 2 times larger asymptotic halo velocities. The average dark matter density inside 2 reff decreases with increasing luminosity and is 6.8 times larger than in disk galaxies of the same B-band luminosity. Compared at the same stellar mass, dark matter densities in ellipticals are 13.5 times higher than in spirals. Different baryon concentrations in ellipticals and spirals cannot explain the higher dark matter density in ellipticals. Instead, the assembly redshift (1+z) of Coma early-type halos is likely about two times larger than of comparably bright spirals. Assuming that local spirals typically assemble at a redshift of one, the majority of bright Coma early-type galaxy halos must have formed around z = 2-3. For about half of our Coma galaxies the assembly redshifts match with constraints derived from stellar populations. We find dark matter densities and estimated assembly redshifts of our observed Coma galaxies in reasonable agreement with recent semi-analytic galaxy formation models., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ

We study a sample of 43 early-type galaxies, selected from the SDSS because they appeared to have velocity dispersion > 350 km/s. High-resolution photometry in the SDSS i passband using HRC-ACS on board the HST shows that just less than half of the sample is made up of superpositions of two or three galaxies, so the reported velocity dispersion is incorrect. The other half of the sample is made up of single objects with genuinely large velocity dispersions. None of these objects has sigma larger than 426 +- 30 km/s. These objects define rather different relations than the bulk of the early-type galaxy population: for their luminosities, they are the smallest, most massive and densest galaxies in the Universe. Although the slopes of the scaling relations they define are rather different from those of the bulk of the population, they lie approximately parallel to those of the bulk "at fixed sigma". These objects appear to be of two distinct types: the less luminous (M_r>-23) objects are rather flattened and extremely dense for their luminosities -- their properties suggest some amount of rotational support and merger histories with abnormally large amounts of gaseous dissipation. The more luminous objects (M_r<-23) tend to be round and to lie in or at the centers of clusters. Their properties are consistent with the hypothesis that they are BCGs. Models in which BCGs form from predominantly radial mergers having little angular momentum predict that they should be prolate. If viewed along the major axis, such objects would appear to have abnormally large sigma for their sizes, and to be abnormally round for their luminosities. This is true of the objects in our sample once we account for the fact that the most luminous galaxies (M_r<-23.5), and BCGs, become slightly less round with increasing luminosity., Comment: 21 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The radio galaxy Fornax A (NGC 1316) is a prominent merger remnant in the outskirts of the Fornax cluster. Its giant radio lobes suggest the presence of a powerful AGN and thus a central supermassive black hole (SMBH). We present high-resolution adaptive optics assisted integral-field data of Fornax A, taken with SINFONI at the Very Large Telescope in the K band. We use axisymmetric orbit models to determine the mass of the SMBH in the centre of Fornax A. The three-dimensional nature of our data provides the possibility to directly test the consistency of the data with axisymmetry by modelling each of the four quadrants separately. According to our dynamical models, consistent SMBH masses and dynamical Ks band mass-to-light ratios are obtained for all quadrants, with =1.3x10^8 M_\odot (rms(M_BH)=0.4x10^8 Msun) and =0.68 (rms(M/L)=0.03), confirming the assumption of axisymmetry. For the folded and averaged data we find M_BH=(1.5+0.75-0.8)x10^8 Msun and M/L=(0.65+0.075-0.05) (3-sigma errors). Thus the black-hole mass of Fornax A is consistent within the error with the Tremaine (2002) M-sigma relation, but is a factor ~4 smaller than expected from its bulge mass and the Marconi&Hunt (2003) relation., Comment: 24 pages, 24 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We present Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET) observations for galaxies at redshift z < 0.3 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) showing large velocity dispersions while appearing to be single galaxies in HST images. The high signal-to-noise HET spectra provide more definitive velocity dispersions. The maximum velocity dispersion we find is 444 km/s. Emission-line widths in QSOs indicate that black holes can exist with masses exceeding 5 billion solar masses, implying velocity dispersions greater than 500 km/s by the local black hole mass - velocity dispersion relationship. This suggests either that QSO black hole masses are overestimated or that the black hole - bulge relationship changes at high black hole mass. The latter option is consistent with evidence that the increase in velocity dispersion with luminosity levels off for the brightest elliptical galaxies., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, accepted to ApJ

The Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) will outfit the 10 m HET with a new wide field and an array of 150 integral-field spectrographs to survey a 420 sq. deg. area in the north Galactic cap. Each fiber-coupled unit spectrograph will cover 350-550 nm, simultaneously. This instrument, called VIRUS, will produce ~34,000 spectra per exposure, and will open up the emission-line universe to large surveys for the first time. The survey will detect 0.8 million Lyman-alpha emitting (LAE) galaxies with 1.9

The observational evidence for central black holes in globular clusters has been argued extensively, and their existence has important consequences for both the formation and evolution of the cluster. Most of the evidence comes from dynamical arguments, but the interpretation is difficult, given the short relaxation times and old ages of the clusters. One of the most robust signatures for the existence of a black hole is radio and/or X-ray emission. We observed three globular clusters, NGC6093 (M80), NGC6266 (M62), and NGC7078 (M15), with the VLA in the A and C configuration with a 3-sigma noise of 36, 36 and 25 microJy, respectively. We find no statistically-significant evidence for radio emission from the central region for any of the three clusters. NGC6266 shows a 2-sigma detection. It is difficult to infer a mass from these upper limits due to uncertainty about the central gas density, accretion rate, and accretion model., Comment: 5 pages, accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

Dynamical models for 17 Coma early-type galaxies are presented. The galaxy sample consists of flattened, rotating as well as non-rotating early-types including cD and S0 galaxies with luminosities between M=-18.79 and M=-22.56. Kinematical long-slit observations cover at least the major and minor axis and extend to 1-4 effective radii. Axisymmetric Schwarzschild models are used to derive stellar mass-to-light ratios and dark halo parameters. In every galaxy models with a dark matter halo match the data better than models without. The statistical significance is over 95 percent for 8 galaxies, around 90 percent for 5 galaxies and for four galaxies it is not significant. For the highly significant cases systematic deviations between observed and modelled kinematics are clearly seen; for the remaining galaxies differences are more statistical in nature. Best-fit models contain 10-50 percent dark matter inside the half-light radius. The central dark matter density is at least one order of magnitude lower than the luminous mass density. The central phase-space density of dark matter is often orders of magnitude lower than in the luminous component, especially when the halo core radius is large. The orbital system of the stars along the major-axis is slightly dominated by radial motions. Some galaxies show tangential anisotropy along the minor-axis, which is correlated with the minor-axis Gauss-Hermite coefficient H4. Changing the balance between data-fit and regularisation constraints does not change the reconstructed mass structure significantly. Model anisotropies tend to strengthen if the weight on regularisation is reduced, but the general property of a galaxy to be radially or tangentially anisotropic, respectively, does not change. The near-infrared integral field spectrograph SINFONI at the ESO VLT opens a new window for the study of central supermassive black holes. With a near-IR spatial resolution similar to HST optical and the ability to penetrate dust it provides the possibility to explore the low-mass end of the M-sigma relation (sigma<120km/s) where so far very few black hole masses were measured with stellar dynamics. With SINFONI we observed the central region of the low-luminosity elliptical galaxy NGC4486a at a spatial resolution of ~0.1arcsec in the K band. The stellar kinematics was measured with a maximum penalised likelihood method considering the region around the CO absorption band heads. We determined a black hole mass of M_BH=1.25^{+0.75}_{-0.79} x 10^7 M_sun (90% C.L.) using the Schwarzschild orbit superposition method including the full 2-dimensional spatial information. This mass agrees with the predictions of the M-sigma relation, strengthening its validity at the lower sigma end., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures. Accepted by MNRAS

We investigate the relationship between black hole mass and host galaxy velocity dispersion for QSOs in Data Release 3 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We derive black hole mass from the broad Hbeta line width and continuum luminosity, and the bulge stellar velocity dispersion from the [OIII] narrow line width. At higher redshifts, we use MgII and [OII] in place of Hbeta and [OIII]. For redshifts z < 0.5, our results agree with the black hole mass - bulge velocity dispersion relationship for nearby galaxies. For 0.5 < z < 1.2, this relationship appears to show evolution with redshift in the sense that the bulges are too small for their black holes. However, we find that part of this apparent trend can be attributed to observational biases, including a Malmquist bias involving the QSO luminosity. Accounting for these biases, we find ~0.2 dex evolution in the black hole mass-bulge velocity dispersion relationship between now and redshift z ~ 1., Comment: Accepted by ApJ, 15 pages, 9 figures

This article was co-authored by all invited speakers at the Joint Discussion on `Neutron Stars and Black Holes in Star Clusters,' which took place during the IAU General Assembly in Prague, Czech Republic, on August 17 and 18, 2006. Each section presents a short summary of recent developments in a key area of research, incorporating the main ideas expressed during the corresponding panel discussion at the meeting. Our meeting, which had close to 300 registered participants, was broadly aimed at the large community of astronomers around the world working on the formation and evolution of compact objects and interacting binary systems in dense star clusters, such as globular clusters and galactic nuclei. Great advances have occurred in this field during the past few years, including the introduction of fundamentally new theoretical paradigms for the formation and evolution of compact objects in binaries as well as countless new discoveries by astronomers that have challenged many accepted models. Some of the highlights include: a nearly complete census of all the millisecond pulsars in 47 Tuc; first detections of many new radio pulsars in other clusters, particularly Terzan 5; detailed studies of X-ray binary populations and their luminosity functions in many galaxies and extragalactic globular clusters; increasing evidence for intermediate-mass black holes in clusters and greatly improved theoretical understanding of their possible formation processes., Comment: 29 pages, proceedings of IAU JD06, to appear in Highlights of Astronomy, Volume 14, ed. Accretion disks around supermassive black holes are widely believed to be the dominant source of the optical-ultraviolet continuum in many classes of active galactic nuclei (AGN). We study here the relationship between the continuum colors of AGN and the characteristic accretion disk temperature (T_max). Based on NLTE models of accrection disks in AGN computed as described by Hubeny et al. (2000), we find that continuum intensity ratios for several pairs of wavelengths between 1350 and 5100 A should show a trend of bluer colors for higher T_max, notwithstanding random disk inclinations. We compare this theoretical expectation with observed colors of QSOs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey,deriving black hole mass and thence T_max from the width of the Mg II broad emission line. The observed colors generally do not show the expected trend and in some cases show a reverse trend of redder colors with increasing T_max. The cause of this discrepancy does not appear to be dust reddening or galaxy contamination but may relate to the accretion rate, as the offset objects are accreting above ~30 % of the Eddington limit. From observations with the GMOS multi-slit spectrograph on the Gemini North telescope, we have obtained spectra for 39 globular cluster candidates in the Virgo giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4649 (M60), of which 38 are confirmed globular clusters. The clusters extend out to a radius of 260" (3.5 effective radii). We find no rotation of the globular cluster system, with an upper limit of v/sigma < 0.6 at a confidence level of 95%. The globular cluster velocity dispersion is constant with radius, within the uncertainties. We fit isotropic models to the globular cluster and stellar kinematics; these models yield a M/L_V around 16 at 200" radius (16 kpc), an increase of a factor of two from the central M/L. We also use the mass profile as derived from X-rays to determine the orbital structure. Using axisymmetric orbit-based models and the X-ray mass profile, we find the orbital distribution is close to isotropic within 100", and becomes tangentially biased beyond. Furthermore, when using the X-ray profile, we find a better fit to the kinematics compared to using a constant M/L model. Thus, both isotropic and axisymmetric orbit-based models give support for the presence of a dark matter halo in NGC 4649., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Hubble Space Telescope allows us to study the central surface brightness profiles for globular clusters at unprecedented detail. We have mined the HST archives to obtain 38 WFPC2 images of galactic globular clusters with adequate exposure times and filters, which we use to measure their central structure. We outline a reliable method to obtain surface brightness profiles from integrated light that we test on an extensive set of simulated images. Most clusters have central surface brightness about 0.5 mag brighter than previous measurements made from ground-based data, with the largest differences around 2 magnitudes. Including the uncertainties in the slope estimates, the surface brightness slope distribution is consistent with half of the sample having flat cores and the remaining half showing a gradual decline from 0 to -0.8 (dlog(Sigma)/dlogr). We deproject the surface brightness profiles in a non-parametric way to obtain luminosity density profiles. The distribution of luminosity density logarithmic slopes show similar features with half of the sample between -0.4 and -1.8. These results are in contrast to our theoretical bias that the central regions of globular clusters are either isothermal (i.e. flat central profiles) or very steep (i.e. luminosity density slope ~-1.6) for core-collapse clusters. With only 50% of our sample having central profiles consistent with isothermal cores, King models appear to poorly represent most globular clusters in their cores., Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures, AJ accepted

The DEEP2 and COMBO-17 surveys are used to study the evolution of the luminosity function of red and blue galaxies to $z \sim 1$. Schechter function fits show that, since $z = 1$, $M^*_B$ dims by $\sim$ 1.3 mag per unit redshift for both color classes, $\phi^*$ of blue galaxies shows little change, while $\phi^*$ for red galaxies has formally nearly quadrupled. At face value, the number density of blue galaxies has remained roughly constant since $ z = 1$, whereas that of red galaxies has been rising. Luminosity densities support both conclusions, but we note that most red-galaxy evolution occurs between our data and local surveys and in our highest redshift bin, where the data are weakest. We discuss the implications of having most red galaxies emerge after $z = 1$ from precursors among the blue population, taking into account the properties of local and distant E/S0s. We suggest a ``mixed'' scenario in which some blue galaxies have their star-formation quenched in gas-rich mergers, migrate to the red sequence with a variety of masses, and merge further on the red sequence in one or more purely stellar mergers. This is the second in a series of papers dedicated to unveil the mass structure and orbital content of a sample of flattened early-type galaxies in the Coma cluster. The ability of our orbit libraries to reconstruct internal stellar motions and the mass composition of a typical elliptical in the sample is investigated by means of Monte-Carlo simulations of isotropic rotator models. The simulations allow a determination of the optimal amount of regularization needed in the orbit superpositions. It is shown that under realistic observational conditions and with the appropriate regularization internal velocity moments can be reconstructed to an accuracy of about 15 per cent; the same accuracy can be achieved for the circular velocity and dark matter fraction. In contrast, the flattening of the halo remains unconstrained. Regularized orbit superpositions are applied to a first galaxy in our sample, NGC 4807, for which stellar kinematical observations extend to 3 Reff. The galaxy seems dark matter dominated outside 2 Reff. Logarithmic dark matter potentials are consistent with the data, as well as NFW-profiles, mimicking logarithmic potentials over the observationally sampled radial range. In both cases, the derived stellar mass-to-light ratio agrees well with independently obtained mass-to-light ratios from stellar population analysis. Kinematically, NGC 4807 is characterized by mild radial anisotropy outside r>0.5 Reff, becoming isotropic towards the center. This is the first of a series of papers dedicated to unveil the mass composition and dynamical structure of a sample of flattened early type galaxies in the Coma cluster. We describe our modifications to the Schwarzschild code of Richstone et al. (in preparation). Applying a Voronoi tessellation in the surface of section we are able to assign accurate phase-space volumes to individual orbits and to reconstruct the full three-integral phase-space distribution function (DF) of any axisymmetric orbit library. Two types of tests have been performed to check the accuracy with which DFs can be represented by appropriate orbit libraries. First, by mapping DFs of spherical gamma-models and flattened Plummer models on to the library we show that the resulting line-of-sight velocity distributions and internal velocity moments of the library match those directly derived from the DF to a precision better than that of present day observational errors. Second, by fitting libraries to the projected kinematics of the same DFs we show that the distribution function reconstructed from the fitted library matches the input DF to a rms of about 15 per cent over a region in phase-space covering 90 per cent of the mass of the library. The achieved accuracy allows us to implement effective entropy-based regularisation to fit real, noisy and spatially incomplete data., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Radial velocities of 468 globular clusters around NGC 1399, the central galaxy in the Fornax cluster, have been obtained with FORS2 and the Mask Exchange Unit (MXU) at the ESO Very Large Telescope. This is the largest sample of globular cluster velocities around any galaxy obtained so far. The mean velocity uncertainty is 50 km/sec. This data sample is accurate and large enough to be used in studies of the mass distribution of NGC 1399 and the properties of its globular cluster system. Here we describe the observations, the reduction procedure, and discuss the uncertainties of the resulting velocities. The complete sample of cluster velocities which is used in a dynamical study of NGC 1399 is tabulated. We study the kinematics and dynamics of the globular cluster system of NGC 1399, the central galaxy of the Fornax cluster. The observational data consists of medium resolution spectra, obtained at the Very Large Telescope. Our sample comprises 468 radial velocities in the magnitude range 20 < m_R < 23. This is the largest sample of globular cluster velocities around any galaxy obtained so far. The radial range is 2 arcmin < r < 9 arcmin, corresponding to 11 kpc to 50 kpc of galactocentric distance. There is the possibility that unbound clusters and/or objects in the foreground contaminate the NGC 1399 cluster sample. Under strong error selection, practically no objects are found with velocities lower than 800 km/s or higher than 2000 km/s. Since the extreme velocities influence the velocity dispersion considerably, uncertainty regarding the exact value of the dispersion remains. Within the above velocity limits, we derive a projected velocity dispersion for the total sample of 274+-9 km/s which within the uncertainties remains constant over the entire radial range. Without any velocity restriction, it increases to 325 km/s. Blue and red clusters show different dispersions corresponding to their different surface density profiles. Spherical models point to a circular velocity of 415+-30$ km/s, assuming isotropy for the red clusters. This value is constant out to 40 kpc. The inferred dark halo potential can be well represented by a logarithmic potential. Also a halo of the NFW type fits well to the observations. Some mass profiles derived from X-ray analyses do not agree with a constant circular velocity within our radial range, irrespective of its exact value., Comment: 38 pages, 20 figures, accepted by AJ

We use QSO emission-line widths to examine the black hole mass - sigma relationship as a function of redshift and to extend the relationship to larger masses. Supermassive black holes in galactic nuclei are closely related to the bulge of the host galaxy. The mass of the black hole, M_BH, increases with the bulge luminosity and with the velocity dispersion of the bulge stars, sigma_*. An important clue to the origin of this correlation would be an observational determination of the evolution, if any, in the M_BH - sigma_* relationship as a function of cosmic time. The high luminosity of QSOs affords the potential for studies at large redshifts. We derive black hole masses from the continuum luminosity and the width of the broad Hbeta line and sigma_* from the width of the narrow [O III] lines. We find that radio quiet QSOs conform to the established M_BH - sigma_* relationship up to values M_BH of 10 billion solar masses, with no discernible change in the relationship out to redshifts of $z \approx 3$. We performed spectroscopy of globular clusters associated with NGC 1399 and measured radial velocities of more than 400 clusters, the largest sample ever obtained for dynamical studies. In this progress report, we present the sample and the first preliminary results. Red and blue clusters have slightly different velocity dispersions in accordance with their different density profiles. We analyze the nuclear stellar dynamics of the SB0 galaxy NGC 1023, utilizing observational data both from the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph aboard the Hubble Space Telescope and from the ground. The stellar kinematics measured from these long-slit spectra show rapid rotation (V = 70 km/s at a distance of 0.1 arcsec = 4.9 pc from the nucleus) and increasing velocity dispersion toward the nucleus (where sigma = 295 +/- 30 km/s). We model the observed stellar kinematics assuming an axisymmetric mass distribution with both two and three integrals of motion. Both modeling techniques point to the presence of a central dark compact mass (which presumably is a supermassive black hole) with confidence > 99%. The isotropic two-integral models yield a best-fitting black hole mass of (6.0 +/- 1.4) x 10^7 M_sun and mass-to-light ratio (M/L_V) of 5.38 +/- 0.08, and the goodness-of-fit (chi^2) is insensitive to reasonable values for the galaxy's inclination. The three-integral models, which non-parametrically fit the observed line-of-sight velocity distribution as a function of position in the galaxy, suggest a black hole mass of (3.9 +/- 0.4) x 10^7 M_sun and M/L_V of 5.56 +/- 0.02 (internal errors), and the edge-on models are vastly superior fits over models at other inclinations. The internal dynamics in NGC 1023 as suggested by our best-fit three-integral model shows that the velocity distribution function at the nucleus is tangentially anisotropic, suggesting the presence of a nuclear stellar disk. The nuclear line of sight velocity distribution has enhanced wings at velocities >= 600 km/s from systemic, suggesting that perhaps we have detected a group of stars very close to the central dark mass., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, accepted in the Astrophysical Journal

We present the luminosity function and color-redshift relation of a magnitude-limited sample of 145 mostly red field E/S0 galaxies at z < 1 from the DEEP Groth Strip Survey (GSS). Most of the E/S0s (86%) form a red envelope in the redshift-color diagram, consistent with predictions of spectral synthesis models in which the dominant stellar population is formed at redshifts z > 1.5. Constructing a luminosity function of the full sample of 145 E/S0s, we find that there is about 1.1--1.9 magnitude brightening in rest-frame B band luminosity back to z = 0.8 from z=0, consistent with other studies. Together with the red colors, this brightening favors models in which the bulk of stars in red field E/S0s formed before z_{for} > 1.5 and have been evolving rather quiescently with few large starbursts since then. Evolution in the number density of field E/S0 galaxies is harder to measure, and uncertainties in the raw counts and their ratio to local samples might amount to as much as a factor of two. Within that uncertainty, the number density of red E/S0s to z = 0.8 seems relatively static, being comparable to or perhaps moderately less than that of local E/S0s depending on the assumed cosmology. A doubling of E/S0 number density since z = 1 can be ruled out with high confidence (97%) if \Omega_{m}=1. Taken together, our results are consistent with the hypothesis that the majority of luminous field E/S0s were already in place by z = 1, that the bulk of their stars were already fairly old, and that their number density has not changed by large amounts since then., Comment: 46pages, 26 figures. As part of the Deep Extragalactic Evolutionary Probe (DEEP) survey, a sample of 190 field galaxies (I_{814} <= 23.5) in the ``Groth Survey Strip'' has been used to analyze the magnitude-size relation over the range 0.1 < z < 1.1. The survey is statistically complete to this magnitude limit. All galaxies have photometric structural parameters, including bulge fractions (B/T), from Hubble Space Telescope images, and spectroscopic redshifts from the Keck Telescope. The analysis includes a determination of the survey selection function in the magnitude-size plane as a function of redshift, which mainly drops faint galaxies at large distances. Our results suggest that selection effects play a very important role. A first analysis treats disk-dominated galaxies with B/T < 0.5. If selection effects are ignored, the mean disk surface brightness (averaged over all galaxies) increases by ~1.3 mag from z = 0.1 to 0.9. However, most of this change is plausibly due to comparing low luminosity galaxies in nearby redshift bins to high luminosity galaxies in distant bins. If this effect is allowed for, no discernible evolution remains in the disk surface brightness of bright (M_B < -19) disk-dominated galaxies. A second analysis treats all galaxies by substituting half-light radius for disk scale length, with similar conclusions. Indeed, at all redshifts, the bulk of galaxies is consistent with the magnitude-size envelope of local galaxies, i.e., with little or no evolution in surface brightness. In the two highest redshift bins (z > 0.7), a handful of luminous, high surface brightness galaxies appears that occupies a region of the magnitude-size plane rarely populated by local galaxies. Black holes, an extreme consequence of the mathematics of General Relativity, have long been suspected of being the prime movers of quasars, which emit more energy than any other objects in the Universe. Recent evidence indicates that supermassive black holes, which are probably quasar remnants, reside at the centers of most galaxies. As our knowledge of the demographics of these relics of a violent earlier Universe improve, we see tantalizing clues that they participated intimately in the formation of galaxies and have strongly influenced their present-day structure., Comment: 20 pages, - This is a near-duplicate of the paper in Nature 395, A14, 1998 (Oct 1)

Optical photometry is presented for the quadruple gravitational lens PG1115+080. A preliminary reduction of data taken from November 1995 to June 1996 gives component ``C'' leading component ``B'' by 23.7+/-3.4 days and components ``A1'' and ``A2'' by 9.4 days. A range of models has been fit to the image positions, none of which gives an adequate fit. The best fitting and most physically plausible of these, taking the lensing galaxy and the associated group of galaxies to be singular isothermal spheres, gives a Hubble constant of 42 km/s/Mpc for Omega=1, with an observational uncertainty of 14%, as computed from the B-C time delay measurement. Taking the lensing galaxy to have an approximately E5 isothermal mass distribution yields H0=64 km/sec/Mpc while taking the galaxy to be a point mass gives H0=84 km/sec/Mpc. The former gives a particularly bad fit to the position of the lensing galaxy, while the latter is inconsistent with measurements of nearby galaxy rotation curves. B,V CCD frames have been used to derive surface brightness profiles for NGC 3201 out to ~18 arcmin. A total of 857 radial velocities with median precision ~1 km/s for 399 member giants have been used to trace the velocity dispersion profile out to 32' (the approximate tidal radius from fits of single-mass, isotropic King-Michie models to the cluster surface brightness profiles). The median difference in radial velocity for stars on either side of an imaginary axis moved through the cluster in 1 degree steps shows a significant maximum amplitude of 1.22+/-0.25 km/s. We discuss possible explanations of this result, including: (1) cluster rotation; (2) preferential stripping of stars on prograde orbits near the limiting radius; (3) the projection of the cluster space velocity onto the plane of the sky and (4) a slight drift in the velocity zero point. It is difficult to identify the primary cause of the observed velocity field structure unambiguously, and we suspect that all of the above processes may play a role. The B,V surface brightness profiles and radial velocities have been modeled with single- & multi-mass King-Michie models and nonparametric techniques. The density and M/L profiles show good agreement over 1.5

We report the first use of the Rutgers Imaging Fabry-Perot Spectrophotometer to study the dynamics of the cores of globular clusters. We have obtained velocities for cluster stars by tuning the Fabry-Perot to take a series of narrow-band images at different wavelengths across one of the Na D (5890 AA) absorption lines. Measuring the flux in every frame yields a short portion of the spectrum for each star simultaneously. This proves to be a very efficient method for obtaining accurate stellar velocities; in crowded regions we are able to measure hundreds of velocities in 3-4 hours of observing time. We have measured velocities with uncertainties of less than 5 km/s for 216 stars within 1.5' of the center of the globular cluster M15 (NGC 7078). The paper is a uuencoded compressed postscript file.
