1. Very high-energy gamma-ray observations of the Crab nebula and other potential sources with the GRAAL experiment

Abstract

The ``Gamma Ray Astronomy at ALmeria'' (GRAAL) experiment uses 63 heliostat-mirrors with a total mirror area of ~ 2500 m2 from the CESA-1 field at the ``Plataforma Solar de Almeria'' (PSA) to collect Cherenkov light from air showers. The detector is located in a central solar tower and detects photon-induced showers with an energy threshold of 250 +- 110 GeV and an asymptotic effective detection area of about 15000 m2. A comparison between the results of detailed Monte-Carlo simulations and data is presented. Data sets taken in the period September 1999 - September 2000 in the direction of the Crab pulsar, the active galaxy 3C 454.3, the unidentified gamma-ray source 3EG 1835+35 and a ``pseudo source'' were analyzed for high energy gamma-ray emission.Evidence for a gamma-ray flux from the Crab pulsar with an integral flux of 2.2 +- 0.4 (stat) ^+1.7_-1.3 (syst) x 10^-9 cm^-2 sec^-1 above threshold and a significance of 4.5 sigma in a total measuring time of 7 hours and 10 minutes on source was found. No evidence for emission from the other sources was found. Some difficulties with the use of heliostat fields for gamma-ray astronomy are pointed out. In particular the effect of field-of-view restricted to the central part of a detected air shower on the lateral distribution and timing properties of Cherenkov light are discussed. Upon restriction the spread of the timing front of proton induced showers sharply decreases and the reconstructed direction becomes biased towards the pointing direction. Abstract

A search for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) above 20 TeV within the field of view (1 sr) of the HEGRA AIROBICC Cherenkov array (29N, 18W, 2200 m a.s.l.) has been performed using data taken between March 1992 and March 1993. The search is based on an all-sky survey using four time scales, 10 seconds, 1 minute, 4 minutes and 1 hour. No evidence for TeV-emission has been found for the data sample. Flux upper limits are given. A special analysis has been performed for GRBs detected by BATSE and WATCH. Two partially and two fully contained GRBs in our field of view (FOV) were studied. For GRB 920925c which was fully contained in our FOV, the most significant excess has a probability of 7.7 10**-8 (corresponding to 5.4 sigmas) of being caused by a background fluctuation. Correcting this probability with the appropriate trial factor, yields a 99.7% confidence level for this excess to be related to the GRB (corresponding to 2.7 sigmas). This result is discussed within the framework of the WATCH detection., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures. Accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract

By acknowledging the full complexity of the phenomenon of servitization and its manifold drivers and outcomes, we extend the current literature through a configurational perspective, the aim of which is to understand the interplay between the drivers (conditions) that lead to certain equifinal outcomes of servitization. The present study aims to take stock of the servitization literature by utilizing the contingency theory of strategy as our foundational theory and the strategy structure environment approach as our primary framework to systematically review and analyze the identified configurational servitization studies. We identify commonalities and gaps in the literature, and we set directions for future research.

We present insights from our case study about the diverse and complex issues related to digital business models. We highlight three digitalization traps and provide a three-phase framework companies can use to evaluate digital business model opportunities and make an informed decision on the commercial prospects for each model vetted.

Abstract

Examination of the proximity effect in iridium-gold bilayer shows that the manipulation of thickness of iridium and gold layer achieves critical temperature (Tc) as low as 33 mK. De Genes-Werthamer theory prediction is higher than the Tc of bilayers and incorporation of a free parameter into the theory improves the agreement. These bilayers exhibit step transitions and are efficient superconducting phase transition thermometers in cryogenic particle detectors.

Abstract

Unternehmensberatungen, Marktforschungsinstitute und Technologie-Evangelisten haben sich in den letzten Jahren mit positiven Prognosen zum enormen Geschäftspotenzial im Internet der Dinge (aus dem Englischen Internet of Things, IoT) gegenseitig übertroffen. In der Tat eröffnen vernetzte IoT-Lösungen neue Geschäftspotenziale und sind derzeit im Begriff ganze Branchen zu disruptieren. Jedoch zeigen neuste empirische Forschungsergebnisse und bisherige Erfahrungen, dass Unternehmen diese Chancen viel langsamer realisieren als erwartet. Selbst IoT-Pioniere wie General Electric sind mit ihren ambitionierten Digitalisierungsinitiativen vorerst gescheitert und sehen sich gezwungen, ihre kommunizierten IoT-Pläne deutlich anzupassen. In Anbetracht dieses Digitalisierungs-Paradox, mit hohen Investitionskosten und niedrigen Erträgen, suchen Unternehmen heute mehr denn je nach neuen Möglichkeiten, die über bekannte Produkt- und Dienstleistungsinnovationen hinausgehen. Der vorliegende Grundlagenbeitrag widmet sich den Fragen, wie das IoT die zentralen Geschäftsmodellelemente von Unternehmen beeinflusst und wie das Digitalisierungs-Paradox überwunden werden kann. Darüber hinaus reflektiert der Beitrag erfolgsversprechende Vorgehensweisen auf dem langen Weg zur Profitabilität im Internet der Dinge.

Abstract

This study extends the discussion of digital servitization business models by adopting the perspective of the theory of the firm. We use four theories of the firm (industrial organization, the resource-based view, organizational identity, and the transaction cost approach) to understand digital servitization business models of firms in the context of ecosystems. Digitalization transforms the business models of solution providers and shapes their firm boundary decisions as they develop digital solutions across organizational boundaries within ecosystems such as harbors, mines, and airports. Thus, digitalization not only affects individual firms' business models but also requires the alignment of the business models of other firms within the ecosystem. Hence, business models in digital servitization should be viewed from an ecosystem perspective. Based on a rigorous literature review, we provide suggestions for future research on digital servitization business models within ecosystems.

Abstract

We present results on the cross-section ratio for inelastic muon scattering on neutrons and protons as a function of Bjorken chi;. The data extend to χ values two orders of magnitude smaller than in previous measurements, down to 2×10-5, for Q2>0.01 GeV2. The ratio is consistent with unity throughout this new range. © 1993.
