A beam test of GLAST (Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope) components was performed at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in October, 1997. These beam test components were simple versions of the planned flight hardware. Results on the performance of the tracker, calorimeter, and anti-coincidence charged particle veto are presented., Comment: 39 pages, 21 figures

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The inclusive A(e,e') cross section for $x \simeq 1$ was measured on $^2$H, C, Fe, and Au for momentum transfers $Q^2$ from 1-7 (GeV/c)$^2$. The scaling behavior of the data was examined in the region of transition from y-scaling to x-scaling. Throughout this transitional region, the data exhibit $\xi$-scaling, reminiscent of the Bloom-Gilman duality seen in free nucleon scattering., Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX; 4 figures (postscript in .tar.Z file)

We present a Next-to-Leading order perturbative QCD analysis of world data on the spin dependent structure functions $g_1^p, g_1^n$, and $g_1^d$, including the new experimental information on the $Q^2$ dependence of $g_1^n$. Careful attention is paid to the experimental and theoretical uncertainties. The data constrain the first moments of the polarized valence quark distributions, but only qualitatively constrain the polarized sea quark and gluon distributions. The NLO results are used to determine the $Q^2$ dependence of the ratio $g_1/F_1$ and evolve the experimental data to a constant $Q^2 = 5 GeV^2$. We determine the first moments of the polarized structure functions of the proton and neutron and find agreement with the Bjorken sum rule., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures; final version to be published in Phys. - Abstract
The article of record as published may be found at https://doi.org/10.1016/S0370-2693(02)03015-0 We have measured the spin structure functions g2p and g2d and the virtual photon asymmetries A2p and A2d over the kinematic range 0.02 < x < 0.8 and 0.7 < Q^2 < 20 GeV^2 by scattering 29.1 and 32.3 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons from transversely polarized NH3 and 6LiD targets. Our measured g2 approximately follows the twist-2 Wandzura-Wilczek calculation. The twist-3 reduced matrix elements d2p and d2n are less than two standard deviations from zero. The data are inconsistent with the Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule if there is no pathological behavior as x->0. The Efremov-Leader-Teryaev integral is consistent with zero within our measured kinematic range. The absolute value of A2 is significantly smaller than the sqrt[R(1+A1)/2] limit.

[PHYS.HEXP]Physics [physics]/High Energy Physics - Experiment [hep-ex] - Abstract
he structure functions g1p and g1n have been measured over the range 0.014 < x < 0.9 and 1 < Q2 < 40 GeV2 using deep-inelastic scattering of 48 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons from polarized protons and deuterons. We find that the Q2 dependence of g1p (g1n) at fixed x is very similar to that of the spin-averaged structure function F1p (F1n). From a NLO QCD fit to all available data we find $\Gamma_1^p - \Gamma_1^n =0.176 \pm 0.003 \pm 0.007$ at Q2=5 GeV2, in agreement with the Bjorken sum rule prediction of 0.182 \pm 0.005.

- Abstract
Measurements were made at SLAC of the cross section for scattering 29 GeV electrons from carbon at a laboratory angle of 4.58, corresponding to 0.03-x-0.1 and 1.3-Q2-2.7 GeV2. Values of RssLrsT were extracted in this kinematic range by comparing these data to cross sections measured at a higher beam energy by the NMC collaboration. The results are in reasonable agreement with pQCD calculations and with extrapolations of the R1990 parameterization of previous data. A new fit is made including these data and other recent results. q1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. New measurements are reported on the deuteron spin structure function g_1^d. These results were obtained from deep inelastic scattering of 48.3 GeV electrons on polarized deuterons in the kinematic range 0.01 < x < 0.9 and 1 < Q^2 < 40 (GeV/c)^2. These are the first high dose electron scattering data obtained using lithium deuteride (6Li2H) as the target material. Extrapolations of the data were performed to obtain moments of g_1^d, including Gamma_1^d, and the net quark polarization Delta Sigma.

Measurements are reported of the proton and deuteron spin structure functions g1 at beam energies of 29.1, 16.2, and 9.7 GeV and g2 at a beam energy of 29.1 GeV. The integrals of g1 over x have been evaluated at fixed Q**2 = 3 (GeV/c)**2 using the full data set. The Q**2 dependence of the ratio g1/F1 was studied and found to be small for Q**2 > 1 (GeV/c)**2. Within experimental precision the g2 data are well-described by the Wandzura-Wilczek twist-2 contribution. Twist-3 matrix elements were extracted and compared to theoretical predictions. The asymmetry A2 was measured and found to be significantly smaller than the positivity limit for both proton and deuteron targets. A2 for the proton is found to be positive and inconsistent with zero. Measurements of g1 in the resonance region show strong variations with x and Q**2, consistent with resonant amplitudes extracted from unpolarized data. These data allow us to study the Q**2 dependence of the first moments of g1 below the scaling region.

We have measured the proton and deuteron spin structure functions g[sup p][sub 1] and g[sup d][sub 1] in the region of the nucleon resonances for W2 < 5GeV2 and Q2(similar, equals)0.5 and Q2(similar, equals)1.2GeV2 by inelastically scattering 9.7 GeV polarized electrons off polarized 15NH3 and 15ND3 targets. We observe significant structure in g[sup p][sub 1] in the resonance region. We have used the present results, together with the deep-inelastic data at higher W2, to extract Gamma (Q2)(equivalent)01 g1(x,Q2)dx. This is the first information on the low-Q2 evolution of Gamma toward the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn limit at Q2 = 0.

(Accepted in Phys. Rev. Lett.) The nucleon spin structure functions g1 and g2 have been and continue to be intensively studied via deep- inelastic lepton scattering [1–6]; however, they remain largely undetermined in the resonance region, where the squared invariant mass of the final state W2 is less than 4 GeV2.

The neutron longitudinal and transverse asymmetries $A^n_1$ and $A^n_2$ have been extracted from deep inelastic scattering of polarized electrons by a polarized $^3$He target at incident energies of 19.42, 22.66 and 25.51 GeV. The measurement allows for the determination of the neutron spin structure functions $g^n_1 (x,Q^2)$ and $g^n_2(x,Q^2)$ over the range $0.03 < x < 0.6$ at an average $Q^2$ of 2 (GeV$/c)^2$. The data are used for the evaluation of the Ellis-Jaffe and Bjorken sum rules. The neutron spin structure function $g^n_1 (x,Q^2)$ is small and negative within the range of our measurement, yielding an integral ${\int_{0.03}^{0.6} g_1^n(x) dx}= -0.028 \pm 0.006 (stat) \pm 0.006 (syst) $. Assuming Regge behavior at low $x$, we extract $\Gamma_1^n=\int^1_0 g^n_1(x)dx = -0.031 \pm 0.006 (stat)\pm 0.009 (syst) $. Combined with previous proton integral results from SLAC experiment E143, we find $\Gamma_1^p - \Gamma_1^n = 0.160 \pm 0.015$ in agreement with the Bjorken sum rule prediction $\Gamma^p_1 - \Gamma ^n_1 = 0.176 \pm 0.008$ at a $Q^2$ value of 3 (GeV$/c)^2$ evaluated using $\alpha_s = 0.32\pm 0.05$.

- Abstract
The ratio g1/F1 has been measured over the range 0.031 (GeV/c)2. A trend is observed for g1/F1 to decrease at lower Q2. Fits to world data with and without a possible Q2-dependence in g1/F1 are in agreement with the Bjorken sum rule, but Delta_q is substantially less than the quark-parton model expectation.

- Abstract
We report on a high-statistics measurement of'. the deuteron spin structure function g(di) at a beam energy of 29 GeV in the kinematic range 0.029 < x < 0.8 and 1 < Q2 < IO (GeV / c) (2) • The integral r(di) = f(1o) g(di) dx evaluated at fixed Q2 = 3 (GeV/c) 2 gives 0.042 ± 0.003(stat) ± 0.004(syst). Combining this result with our earlier measurement of g(di), we find r(pi) - r(nt) = 0.163 ± O.OIO(stat) ± 0.016(syst), which agrees with the prediction of the Bjorken sum rule with O(a(3x)) corrections, r(pi) - r(ni) = 0.171 ± 0.008. We find the quark contribution to the proton helicity to be liq = 0.30 ± 0.06. We report on a high-statistics measurement of the deuteron spin structure function g[sup d][sub 1] at a beam energy of 29 GeV in the kinematic range 0.029 < x < 0.8 and 1 < Q2 < 10 (GeV/c)2. The integral Gamma [sup d][sub 1] = (integral)[sup 1][sub 0]g[sup d][sub 1]dx evaluated at fixed Q2 = 3 (GeV/c)2 gives 0.042 ± 0.003(stat) ± 0.004(syst). Combining this result with our earlier measurement of g[sup p][sub 1], we find Gamma [sup p][sub 1]- Gamma [sup n][sub 1] = 0.163 ± 0.010(stat) ± 0.016(syst), which agrees with the prediction of the Bjorken sum rule with O( alpha [sup 3][sub s]) corrections, Gamma [sup p][sub 1]- Gamma [sup n][sub 1] = 0.171 ± 0.008. We find the quark contribution to the proton helicity to be Delta q = 0.30 ± 0.06.

- Abstract
We have measured the spin structure functions g2p and g2d and the virtual photon asymmetries A2p and A2d over the kinematic range 0.02 < x < 0.8 and 0.7 < Q^2 < 20 GeV^2 by scattering 29.1 and 32.3 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons from transversely polarized NH3 and 6LiD targets.

We report measurements of the proton form factors GEp and GMp extracted from elastic scattering in the range 1≤Q^2≤3 (GeV/c)^2 with total uncertainties < 15% in GEp and < 3% in GMp. Comparisons are made to theoretical models, including those based on perturbative QCD, vector-meson dominance, QCD sum rules, and diquark constituents in the proton. The results for GEp are somewhat larger than indicated by most theoretical parametrizations, and the ratios of the Pauli and Dirac form factors Q^2(F2p / F1p) are lower in value and demonstrate a weaker Q^2 dependence than those predictions. The response of the GSFC High Energy Cosmic Ray Detector has been studied using electrons in the energy range from 5.4 to 18 GeV. A semiempirical analytic form has been developed to determine the starting points and the energies of electron-induced cascade showers. The energy resolution thus obtained has a full width at half maximum of 17%, and the starting point can be determined to within 0.1 to 0.2 radiation length. The results of this response calibration provide a basis on which cosmic ray electrons can be reliably identified and analyzed in the presence of a large proton background.
