We present 850$\mu$m observations of a sample of 8 nearby spiral galaxies, made using the SCUBA-2 camera on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) as part of the JCMT Nearby Galaxies Legacy Survey (NGLS). We corrected our data for the presence of the $^{12}$CO $J=3\to 2$ line in the SCUBA-2 850$\mu$m bandwidth using NGLS HARP data, finding a typical $^{12}$CO contribution of $\sim 20$%. We measured dust column densities, temperatures and opacity indices by fitting spectral energy distributions constructed from SCUBA-2 and archival Herschel observations, and used archival GALEX and Spitzer data to make maps of surface density of star formation ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$). Typically, comparing SCUBA-2-derived H$_2$ surface densities ($\Sigma_{\rm H_2}$) to $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ gives shallow star formation law indices within galaxies, with SCUBA-2-derived values typically being sublinear and Herschel-derived values typically being broadly linear. This difference is likely due to the effects of atmospheric filtering on the SCUBA-2 data. Comparing the mean values of $\Sigma_{\rm H_2}$ and $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ of the galaxies in our sample returns a steeper star formation law index, broadly consistent with both the Kennicutt-Schmidt value of 1.4 and linearity. Our results show that a SCUBA-2 detection is a good predictor of star formation. We suggest that Herschel emission traces gas in regions which will form stars on timescales $\sim 5-100$ Myr, comparable to the star formation timescale traced by GALEX and Spitzer data, while SCUBA-2 preferentially traces the densest gas within these regions, which likely forms stars on shorter timescales., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 15 pages, 12 figures, 8 tables (plus 15 pages of appendices, with 31 figures)

Observing nearby galaxies with submillimeter telescopes on the ground has two major challenges. First, the brightness is significantly reduced at long submillimeter wavelengths compared to the brightness at the peak of the dust emission. Second, it is necessary to use a high-pass spatial filter to remove atmospheric noise on large angular scales, which has the unwelcome by-product of also removing the galaxy's large-scale structure. We have developed a technique for producing high-resolution submillimeter images of galaxies of large angular size by using the telescope on the ground to determine the small-scale structure (the large Fourier components) and a space telescope (Herschel or Planck) to determine the large-scale structure (the small Fourier components). Using this technique, we are carrying out the HARP and SCUBA-2 High Resolution Terahertz Andromeda Galaxy Survey (HASHTAG), an international Large Program on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, with one aim being to produce the first high-fidelity high-resolution submillimeter images of Andromeda. In this paper, we describe the survey, the method we have developed for combining the space-based and ground-based data, and present the first HASHTAG images of Andromeda at 450 and 850um. We also have created a method to predict the CO(J=3-2) line flux across M31, which contaminates the 850um band. We find that while normally the contamination is below our sensitivity limit, the contamination can be significant (up to 28%) in a few of the brightest regions of the 10 kpc ring. We observed the starburst galaxy M82 in 850$\mu$m polarised light with the POL-2 polarimeter on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). We interpret our observed polarisation geometry as tracing a two-component magnetic field: a poloidal component aligned with the galactic 'superwind', extending to a height $\sim 350$ pc above and below the central bar; and a spiral-arm-aligned, or possibly toroidal, component in the plane of the galaxy, which dominates the 850$\mu$m polarised light distribution at galactocentric radii $\gtrsim 2$ kpc. Comparison of our results with recent HAWC+ measurements of the field in the dust entrained by the M82 superwind suggests that the superwind breaks out from the central starburst at $\sim 350$ pc above the plane of the galaxy., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted by Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS)

We present the SCUBA-2 850 ${\mu}m$ component of JINGLE, the new JCMT large survey for dust and gas in nearby galaxies, which with 193 galaxies is the largest targeted survey of nearby galaxies at 850 ${\mu}m$. We provide details of our SCUBA-2 data reduction pipeline, optimised for slightly extended sources, and including a calibration model adjusted to match conventions used in other far-infrared data. We measure total integrated fluxes for the entire JINGLE sample in 10 infrared/submillimetre bands, including all WISE, Herschel-PACS, Herschel-SPIRE and SCUBA-2 850 ${\mu}m$ maps, statistically accounting for the contamination by CO(J=3-2) in the 850 ${\mu}m$ band. Of our initial sample of 193 galaxies, 191 are detected at 250 ${\mu}m$ with a $\geq$ 5${\sigma}$ significance. In the SCUBA-2 850 ${\mu}m$ band we detect 126 galaxies with $\geq$ 3${\sigma}$ significance. The distribution of the JINGLE galaxies in far-infrared/sub-millimetre colour-colour plots reveals that the sample is not well fit by single modified-blackbody models that assume a single dust-emissivity index $(\beta)$. Instead, our new 850 ${\mu}m$ data suggest either that a large fraction of our objects require $\beta < 1.5$, or that a model allowing for an excess of sub-mm emission (e.g., a broken dust emissivity law, or a very cold dust component 10 K) is required. We provide relations to convert far-infrared colours to dust temperature and $\beta$ for JINGLE-like galaxies. For JINGLE the FIR colours correlate more strongly with star-formation rate surface-density rather than the stellar surface-density, suggesting heating of dust is greater due to younger rather than older stellar-populations, consistent with the low proportion of early-type galaxies in the sample., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS; data available at http://www.star.ucl.ac.uk/JINGLE/

We present SCUBA-2 450$\mu$m and 850$\mu$m data of the mature redshift 2 cluster CLJ1449. We combine this with archival Herschel data to explore the star forming properties of CLJ1449. Using high resolution ALMA and JVLA data we identify potentially confused galaxies, and use the Bayesian inference tool XID+ to estimate fluxes for them. Using archival optical and near infrared data with the energy-balance code CIGALE we calculate star formation rates, and stellar masses for all our cluster members, and find the star formation rate varies between 20-1600M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$ over the entire 3Mpc radial range. The central 0.5Mpc region itself has a total star formation rate of 800$\pm$200M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$, which corresponds to a star formation rate density of (1.2$\pm$0.3)$\times$10$^{4}$M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$Mpc$^{-3}$, which is approximately five orders of magnitude greater than expected field values. When comparing this cluster to those at lower redshifts we find that there is an increase in star formation rate per unit volume towards the centre of the cluster. This indicates that there is indeed a reversal in the star formation/density relation in CLJ1449. Based on the radial star-formation rate density profile, we see evidence for an elevation in the star formation rate density, even out to radii of 3Mpc. At these radii the elevation could be an order of magnitude greater than field values, but the exact number cannot be determined due to ambiguity in the redshift associations. If this is the case it would imply that this cluster is still accreting material which is possibly interacting and undergoing vigorous star-formation., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, 7 tables. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) was revolutionary because of the extraordinary breadth and ambition of its optical imaging and spectroscopy. We argue that a 'sub-millimeter SDSS' - a sensitive large-area imaging+spectroscopic survey in the sub-mm window - will revolutionize our understanding of galaxy evolution in the early Universe. By detecting the thermal dust continuum emission and atomic and molecular line emission of galaxies out to z~10 it will be possible to measure the redshifts, star formation rates, dust and gas content of hundreds of thousands of high-z galaxies down to ~L*. Many of these galaxies will have counterparts visible in the deep optical imaging of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope. This 3D map of galaxy evolution will span the peak epoch of galaxy formation all the way back to cosmic dawn, measuring the co-evolution of the star formation rate density and molecular gas content of galaxies, tracking the production of metals and charting the growth of large-scale structure., Comment: Science White paper submitted to the Astro2020 Decadal Survey

We present a catalogue of Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs) in M33, extracted from cold dust continuum emission. Our GMCs are identified by computing dendrograms. We measure the spatial distribution of these clouds, and characterise their dust properties. Combining these measured properties with CO(J=2-1) and 21cm HI data, we calculate the gas-to-dust ratio (GDR) of these clouds, and from this compute a total cloud mass. In total, we find 165 GMCs with cloud masses in the range of 10$^4$-10$^7$ M$_\odot$. We find that radially, $\log_{10}(\mathrm{GDR}) = -0.043(\pm0.038) \,\mathrm{R [kpc]} + 1.88(\pm0.15)$, a much lower GDR than found in the Milky Way, and a correspondingly higher $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ factor. The mass function of these clouds follows a slope proportional to M$^{-2.84}$, steeper than many previous studies of GMCs in local galaxies, implying that M33 is poorer at forming massive clouds than other nearby spirals. Whilst we can rule out interstellar pressure as the major contributing factor, we are unable to disentangle the relative effects of metallicity and HI velocity dispersion. We find a reasonably featureless number density profile with galactocentric radius, and weak correlations between galactocentric radius and dust temperature/mass. These clouds are reasonably consistent with Larson's scaling relationships, and many of our sources are co-spatial with earlier CO studies. Massive clouds are identified at large galactocentric radius, unlike in these earlier studies, perhaps indicating a population of CO-dark gas dominated clouds at these larger distances., Comment: 26 pages, 14 figures. JINGLE is a new JCMT legacy survey designed to systematically study the cold interstellar medium of galaxies in the local Universe. As part of the survey we perform 850um continuum measurements with SCUBA-2 for a representative sample of 193 Herschel-selected galaxies with M*>10^9Msun, as well as integrated CO(2-1) line fluxes with RxA3m for a subset of 90 of these galaxies. The sample is selected from fields covered by the Herschel-ATLAS survey that are also targeted by the MaNGA optical integral-field spectroscopic survey. The new JCMT observations combined with the multi-wavelength ancillary data will allow for the robust characterization of the properties of dust in the nearby Universe, and the benchmarking of scaling relations between dust, gas, and global galaxy properties. In this paper we give an overview of the survey objectives and details about the sample selection and JCMT observations, present a consistent 30 band UV-to-FIR photometric catalog with derived properties, and introduce the JINGLE Main Data Release (MDR). We present a high spatial resolution study, on scales of $\sim$100pc, of the relationship between star-formation rate (SFR) and gas content within Local Group galaxy M33. Combining deep SCUBA-2 observations with archival GALEX, SDSS, WISE, Spitzer and submillimetre Herschel data, we are able to model the entire SED from UV to sub-mm wavelengths. We calculate the SFR on a pixel-by-pixel basis using the total infrared luminosity, and find a total SFR of $0.17 \pm 0.06\,\rm{M}_\odot$/yr, somewhat lower than our other two measures of SFR -- combined FUV and 24$\mu$m SFR ($0.25^{+0.10}_{-0.07}\,\rm{M}_\odot$/yr) and SED-fitting tool MAGPHYS ($0.33^{+0.05}_{-0.06}\,\rm{M}_\odot$/yr). We trace the total gas using a combination of the 21cm HI line for atomic hydrogen, and CO($\textit{J}$=2-1) data for molecular hydrogen. We have also traced the total gas using dust masses. We study the star-formation law in terms of molecular gas, total gas, and gas from dust. We perform an analysis of the star-formation law on a variety of pixel scales, from 25$^{\prime\prime}$ to 500$^{\prime\prime}$ (100pc to 2kpc). At kpc scales, we find that a linear Schmidt-type power law index is suitable for molecular gas, but the index appears to be much higher with total gas, and gas from dust. Whilst we find a strong scale dependence on the Schmidt index, the gas depletion timescale is invariant with pixel scale., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present HCN J=4-3 and HCO^+ J=4-3 maps of six nearby star-forming galaxies, NGC 253, NGC 1068, IC 342, M82, M83, and NGC 6946, obtained with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope as part of the MALATANG survey. All galaxies were mapped in the central 2 arcmin $\times$ 2 arcmin region at 14 arcsec (FWHM) resolution (corresponding to linear scales of ~ 0.2-1.0 kpc). The L_IR-L'_dense relation, where the dense gas is traced by the HCN J=4-3 and the HCO^+ J=4-3 emission, measured in our sample of spatially-resolved galaxies is found to follow the linear correlation established globally in galaxies within the scatter. We find that the luminosity ratio, L_IR/L'_dense, shows systematic variations with L_IR within individual spatially resolved galaxies, whereas the galaxy-integrated ratios vary little. A rising trend is also found between L_IR/L'_dense ratio and the warm-dust temperature gauged by the 70 \mu m/100 \mu m flux ratio. We find the luminosity ratios of IR/HCN(4-3) and IR/HCO^+(4-3), which can be taken as a proxy for the efficiency of star formation in the dense molecular gas (SFE_dense), appears to be nearly independent of the dense-gas fraction (f_dense) for our sample of galaxies. The SFE of the total molecular gas (SFE_mol) is found to increase substantially with f_dense when combining our data with that on local (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies and high-z quasars. The mean L'_HCN(4-3)/L'_HCO^+(4-3) line ratio measured for the six targeted galaxies is 0.9+/-0.6. No significant correlation is found for the L'_HCN(4-3)/L'_HCO^+(4-3) ratio with the SFR as traced by L_IR, nor with the warm-dust temperature, for the different populations of galaxies., Comment: 29 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present new Herschel photometric and spectroscopic observations of Supernova 1987A, carried out in 2012. Our dedicated photometric measurements provide new 70 micron data and improved imaging quality at 100 and 160 micron compared to previous observations in 2010. Our Herschel spectra show only weak CO line emission, and provide an upper limit for the 63 micron [O I] line flux, eliminating the possibility that line contaminations distort the previously estimated dust mass. The far-infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) is well fitted by thermal emission from cold dust. The newly measured 70 micron flux constrains the dust temperature, limiting it to nearly a single temperature. The far-infrared emission can be fitted by 0.5+-0.1 Msun of amorphous carbon, about a factor of two larger than the current nucleosynthetic mass prediction for carbon. The observation of SiO molecules at early and late phases suggests that silicates may also have formed and we could fit the SED with a combination of 0.3 Msun of amorphous carbon and 0.5 Msun of silicates, totalling 0.8 Msun of dust. Our analysis thus supports the presence of a large dust reservoir in the ejecta of SN 1987A. The inferred dust mass suggests that supernovae can be an important source of dust in the interstellar medium, from local to high-redshift galaxies., Comment: ApJ accepted, 8 pages

In this paper we present a catalogue of Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs) in the Andromeda (M31) galaxy extracted from the Hershel Exploitation of Local Galaxy Andromeda (HELGA) dataset. GMCs are identified from the Herschel maps using a hierarchical source extraction algorithm. We present the results of this new catalogue and characterise the spatial distribution and spectral energy properties of its clouds based on the radial dust/gas properties found by Smith et al (2012). 236 GMCs in the mass range 10^4-10^7 M_sol are identified, their cumulative mass distribution is found to be proportional to M^-1.45 in agreement with earlier studies. The GMCs appear to follow the same cloud mass to L_CO correlation observed in the Milky Way. However, comparison between this catalogue and interferometry studies also shows that the GMCs are substructured below the Herschel resolution limit suggesting that we are observing associations of GMCs. Following Gordon et al. (2006), we study the spatial structure of M31 by splitting the observed structure into a set of spiral arms and offset rings. We fit radii of 10.5 and 15.5 kpc to the two most prominent rings. We then fit a logarithmic spiral with a pitch angle of 8.9 deg to the GMCs not associated with either ring. Lastly, we comment upon the effects of deprojection on our results and investigate the effect different models for M31's inclination will have upon the projection of an unperturbed spiral arm system., Comment: Submitted to ApJ, 21 figures; rev v2 to correct cross-references (resub: update to series numbering)

We present a detailed study of how the Star Formation Rate (SFR) relates to the interstellar medium (ISM) of M31 at ~140pc scales. The SFR is calculated using the far-ultraviolet and 24um emission, corrected for the old stellar population in M31. We find a global value for the SFR of 0.25+/-0.05Msun/yr and compare this with the SFR found using the total far-infrared (FIR) luminosity. There is general agreement in regions where young stars dominate the dust heating. Atomic hydrogen (HI) and molecular gas (traced by carbon monoxide, CO) or the dust mass is used to trace the total gas in the ISM. We show that the global surface densities of SFR and gas mass place M31 amongst a set of low-SFR galaxies in the plot of Kennicutt (1998b). The relationship between SFR and gas surface density is tested in six radial annuli across M31, assuming a power law relationship with index, N. The star formation law using total gas traced by HI and CO gives a global index of N=2.03+/-0.04, with a significant variation with radius; the highest values are observed in the 10kpc ring. We suggest that this slope is due to HI turning molecular at ~10Msun/pc2. When looking at H2 regions, we measure a higher mean SFR suggesting a better spatial correlation between H2 and SF. We find N~0.6 with consistent results throughout the disk - this is at the low end of values found in previous work and argues against a superlinear SF law on small scales., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

It has often been suggested that an alternative to the standard CO/21-cm method for estimating the mass of the interstellar medium (ISM) in a galaxy might be to estimate the mass of the ISM from the continuum dust emission. In this paper, we investigate the potential of this technique using Herschel observations of ten galaxies in the Herschel Reference Survey and in the Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey. We show that the emission detected by Herschel is mostly from dust that has a temperature and emissivity index similar to that of dust in the local ISM in our galaxy, with the temperature generally increasing towards the centre of each galaxy. We calibrate the dust method using the CO and 21-cm observations to provide an independent estimate of the mass of hydrogen in each galaxy, solving the problem of the uncertain `X factor' for the molecular gas by minimizing the dispersion in the ratio of the masses estimated using the two methods. With the calibration for the dust method and the estimate of the X-factor produced in this way, the dispersion in the ratio of the two gas masses is 30%, which gives an upper limit on the fundamental accuracy of the dust method. The calibration we obtain for the dust method is very similar to an independent Herschel measurement for M31 and to the calibration for the Milky Way from Planck measurements., Comment: Submitted to the Astrophysical Journal

How did the universe evolve? The fine angular scale (l>1000) temperature and polarization anisotropies in the CMB are a Rosetta stone for understanding the evolution of the universe. Through detailed measurements one may address everything from the physics of the birth of the universe to the history of star formation and the process by which galaxies formed. One may in addition track the evolution of the dark energy and discover the net neutrino mass. We are at the dawn of a new era in which hundreds of square degrees of sky can be mapped with arcminute resolution and sensitivities measured in microKelvin. Acquiring these data requires the use of special purpose telescopes such as the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT), located in Chile, and the South Pole Telescope (SPT). These new telescopes are outfitted with a new generation of custom mm-wave kilo-pixel arrays. We report on multi-frequency linear polarization monitoring of 15 active galactic nuclei containing highly relativistic jets with apparent speeds from $\sim$4 $c$ to $>40c$. The measurements were obtained at optical, 1 mm, and 3 mm wavelengths, and at 7 mm with the Very Long Baseline Array. The data show a wide range in degree of linear polarization among the sources, from $<$1% to $>$30%, and interday polarization variability in individual sources. The polarization properties suggest separation of the sample into three groups with low, intermediate, and high variability of polarization in the core at 7 mm : LVP, IVP, and HVP, respectively. The groups are partially associated with the common classification of active galactic nuclei as radio galaxies and quasars with low optical polarization (LVP), BL Lacertae objects (IVP), and highly optically polarized quasars (HVP). Our study investigates correlations between total flux, fractional polarization, and polarization position angle at the different wavelengths. We interpret the polarization properties of the sources in the sample through models in which weak shocks compress turbulent plasma in the jet. The differences in the orientation of sources with respect to the observer, jet kinematics, and abundance of thermal matter external to the jet near the core can account for the diversity in the polarization properties. The results provide strong evidence that the optical polarized emission originates in shocks, most likely situated between the 3 mm and 7 mm VLBI cores. They also support the idea that the 1 mm core lies at the edge of the transition zone between electromagnetically dominated and turbulent hydrodynamical sections of the jet., Comment: 63 pages, 17 figures, 13 tables, in press AJ

An 11-day monitoring campaign in late 2005 reveals clear correlation in polarization between the optical emission and the region of the intensity peak (the "pseudocore") at the upstream end of the jet in 43 GHz Very Long Baseline Array images in the highly variable quasar PKS 0420-014. The electric-vector position angle (EVPA) of the pseudocore rotated by about 80 degrees in four VLBA observations over a period of nine days, matching the trend of the optical EVPA. In addition, the 43 GHz EVPAs agree well with the optical values when we correct the former for Faraday rotation. Fluctuations in the polarization at both wavebands are consistent with the variable emission arising from a standing conical shock wave that compresses magnetically turbulent plasma in the ambient jet. The volume of the variable component is the same at both wavebands, although only ~20% of the total 43 GHz emission arises from this site. The remainder of the 43 GHz flux density must originate in a separate region with very low polarization. If 0420-014 is a typical case, the nonthermal optical emission from blazars originates primarily in and near the pseudocore rather than closer to the central engine where the flow collimates and accelerates., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures; Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present total and polarized intensity images of 15 active galactic nuclei obtained with the Very Long Baseline Array at 7 mm at 17 epochs from 1998 March to 2001 April. At some epochs the images are accompanied by nearly simultaneous polarization measurements at 3 mm, 1.35/0.85 mm, and optical wavelengths. Here we analyze the 7 mm images to define the properties of the jets of two radio galaxies, five BL Lac objects, and eight quasars on angular scales $\gtrsim 0.1$ milliarcseconds. We determine the apparent velocities of 106 features in the jets; for many of the features we derive Doppler factors using a new method based on comparison of timescale of decline in flux density with the light-travel time across the emitting region. This allows us to estimate the Lorentz factors, intrinsic brightness temperatures, and viewing angles of 73 superluminal knots, as well as the opening angle of the jet for each source. We analyze the derived physical parameters of the jets. In nine sources we detect statistically meaningful deviations from ballistic motion, with the majority of components accelerating with distance from the core. In six sources we identify jet features with characteristics of trailing shocks that form behind the primary strong perturbations in jet simulations. The apparent speeds of these components increase with distance from the core suggesting an acceleration of the underlying jet., Comment: 100 pages, 44 figures, accepted for publication in AJ. We present optical, near-infrared and radio observations of the 3-hour field of the Canada-UK Deep Submillimetre Survey. Of the 27 submillimetre sources in the field, nine have secure identifications with either a radio source or a near-IR source. We show that the percentage of sources with secure identifications in the CUDSS is consistent with that found for the bright `8 mJy' submillimetre survey, once allowance is made for the different submillimetre and radio flux limits. Of the 14 secure identifications in the two CUDSS fields, eight are VROs or EROs, five have colours typical of normal galaxies, and one is a radio source which has not yet been detected at optical/near-IR wavelengths. Eleven of the identifications have optical/near-IR structures which are either disturbed or have some peculiarity which suggests that the host galaxy is part of an interacting system. One difference between the CUDSS results and the results from the 8-mJy survey is the large number of low-redshift objects in the CUDSS; we give several arguments why these are genuine low-redshift submillimetre sources rather than being gravitational lenses which are gravitationally amplifying a high-$z$ submillimetre source. We present the multi-wavelength identifications for 23 sources in the Canada-UK Deep Submillimeter Survey (CUDSS) 14h field. The identifications have been selected on the basis of radio and near-infrared data and we argue that, to our observational limits, both are effective at selecting the correct counterparts of the SCUBA sources. We discuss the properties of these identifications and find that they are very red in near-infrared color, with many classified as Extremely Red Objects, and show disturbed morphologies. Using the entire CUDSS catalogue of 50 sources we use a combination of spectroscopic redshifts (4 objects), 1.4GHz-to-850um flux ratio redshift estimates (10 objects), and redshift lower-limits based on non-detections at 1.4GHz (the rest of the sample) to estimate a lower-limit on the median redshift of the population of z_med > 1.4. Working from simple models and using the properties of the secure identifications, we discuss general and tentative constraints on the redshift distribution and the expected colors and magnitudes of the entire population., Comment: 34 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

First results from XMM-Newton observations of the Canada France Redshift Survey (CFRS) 3hr, 10hr and 14hr fields are presented. Limited regions of two of the XMM surveys (3 and 14hr) are compared to the Canada UK Deep sub-mm Surveys (CUDSS) undertaken with SCUBA. None of the 27 SCUBA sources in the 3hr field are detected by XMM, while one of the 23 SCUBA sources in the 14hr field is found to coincide with an X-ray source. The SCUBA population as a whole is not significantly detected in either the 0.5-2 keV or the 2-10 keV X-ray bands, even after coadding the X-ray flux at the SCUBA positions, in both fields. The 18 X-ray sources within the CUDSS 3hr map yield a mean sub-mm flux of 0.48+-0.27 mJy after coadding the sub-mm flux at the X-ray positions. Using this result we place an upper limit on the contribution of AGN to the sub-mm background at 850 microns of ~7 per cent. Conversely we estimate the contribution of sub-mm sources to the 0.5-2 keV X-ray background to be <16.5 per cent. These results strongly support the conclusion that the two backgrounds are caused by different processes, in the one case nucleosynthesis in stars, in the other accretion onto black-holes. We conclude that it is possible for SCUBA sources in general to contain AGN, as long as they are Compton-thick and are at z>2.3. The ratio of the X-ray to sub-mm flux for the X-ray sources however, implies that even when a galaxy does contain an AGN, most of the energy heating the dust is from young stars and not from the active nucleus., Comment: 10 pages, accepted by MNRAS

We have used SCUBA to survey an area of 50 square arcmin, detecting 19 sources down to a 3sigma sensitivity limit of 3.5 mJy at 850 microns. We have used Monte-Carlo simulations to assess the effect of source confusion and noise on the SCUBA fluxes and positions, finding that the fluxes of sources in the SCUBA surveys are significantly biased upwards and that the fraction of the 850 micron background that has been resolved by SCUBA has been overestimated. The radio/submillmetre flux ratios imply that the dust in these galaxies is being heated by young stars rather than AGN. We have used simple evolution models based on our parallel SCUBA survey of the local universe to address the major questions about the SCUBA sources: (1) what fraction of the star formation at high redshift is hidden by dust? (2) Does the submillimetre luminosity density reach a maximum at some redshift? (3) If the SCUBA sources are proto-ellipticals, when exactly did ellipticals form? However, we show that the observations are not yet good enough for definitive answers to these questions. There are, for example, acceptable models in which 10 times as much high-redshift star formation is hidden by dust as is seen at optical wavelengths, but also acceptable ones in which the amount of hidden star formation is less than that seen optically. There are acceptable models in which very little star formation occurred before a redshift of three (as might be expected in models of hierarchical galaxy formation), but also ones in which 30% of the stars have formed by this redshift. Deep surveys of the sky at millimeter wavelengths have revealed a population of ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at high redshifts. These appear similar to local objects of similar luminosities (such as Arp220) but are much more ``important'' at high redshift than at low reshift, in the sense that they represent a much larger fraction of the total luminous output of the distant Universe than they do locally. In fact the ULIRGs at high redshift are producing a significant fraction (>= 15%) of the total luminous output of the Universe averaged over all wavelengths and all epochs. The high z ULIRGs could plausibly be responsible for producing the metal-rich spheroidal components of galaxies, including the bulges that are the subject of this conference. Identifications are sought for 12 sub-mm sources detected by Eales et al (1998). Six are securely identified, two have probable identifications and four remain unidentified with I_AB > 25. Spectroscopic and estimated photometric redshifts indicate that four of the sources have z < 1, and four have 1 < z < 3, with the remaining four empty field sources probably lying at z > 3. The spectral energy distributions of the identifications are consistent with those of high extinction starbursts such as Arp 220. The far-IR luminosities of the sources at z > 0.5 are of order 3 x 10^12 h_50^-2 L_sun, i.e. slightly larger than that of Arp 220. Based on this small sample, the cumulative bolometric luminosity function shows strong evolution to z ~ 1, but weaker or possibly even negative evolution beyond. The redshift dependence of the far-IR luminosity density does not appear, at this early stage, to be inconsistent with that seen in the ultraviolet luminosity density. Assuming that the energy source in the far-IR is massive stars, the total luminous output from star-formation in the Universe is probably dominated by the far-IR emission. The detected systems have individual star-formation rates (exceeding 300 h_50^-2 M_O yr^-1) that are much higher than seen in the ultraviolet selected samples, and which are sufficient to form substantial stellar populations on dynamical timescales of 10^8 yr. The association with merger-like morphologies and the obvious presence of dust makes it attractive to identify these systems as forming the metal-rich spheroid population, in which case we would infer that much of this activity has occurred relatively recently, at z ~ 2., Comment: 17 pages text + 14 figures. The advent of sensitive sub-mm array cameras now allows a proper census of dust-enshrouded massive star-formation in very distant galaxies, previously hidden activity to which even the deepest optical images are insensitive. We present the deepest sub-mm survey, taken with the SCUBA camera on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) and centred on the Hubble Deep Field (HDF). The high source density on this image implies that the survey is confusion-limited below a flux density of 2 mJy. However within the central 80 arcsec radius independent analyses yield 5 reproducible sources with S(850um) > 2 mJy which simulations indicate can be ascribed to individual galaxies. These data lead to integral source counts which are completely inconsistent with a no evolution model, whilst the combined brightness of the 5 most secure sources in our map is sufficient to account for 30-50% of the previously unresolved sub-mm background, and statistically the entire background is resolved at about the 0.3 mJy level. Four of the five brightest sources appear to be associated with galaxies which lie in the redshift range 2 < z < 4. SCUBA, the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array, built by the Royal Observatory Edinburgh for the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, is the most versatile and powerful of a new generation of submillimetre cameras. It combines a sensitive dual-waveband imaging array with a three-band photometer, and is sky-background limited by the emission from the Mauna Kea atmosphere at all observing wavelengths from 350 microns to 2 mm. The increased sensitivity and array size mean that SCUBA maps close to 10,000 times faster than its single-pixel predecessor (UKT14). SCUBA is a facility instrument, open to the world community of users, and is provided with a high level of user support. The Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) is one of a new generation of cameras designed to operate in the submillimetre waveband. The instrument has a wide wavelength range covering all the atmospheric transmission windows between 300 and 2000 microns. In the heart of the instrument are two arrays of bolometers optimised for the short (350/450 microns) and long (750/850 microns) wavelength ends of the submillimetre spectrum. The two arrays can be used simultaneously, giving a unique dual-wavelength capability, and have a 2.3 arc-minute field of view on the sky. Background-limited performance is achieved by cooling the arrays to below 100 mK. SCUBA has now been in active service for over a year, and has already made substantial breakthroughs in many areas of astronomy. We present the first results of a deep unbiased submillimetre survey carried out at 450 and 850 microns. We detected 12 sources at 850 microns, giving a surface density of sources with 850-micron flux densities > 2.8mJy of of 0.49+-0.16 per square arcmin. The sources constitute 20-30% of the background radiation at 850 microns and thus a significant fraction of the entire background radiation produced by stars. This implies, through the connection between metallicity and background radiation, that a significant fraction of all the stars that have ever been formed were formed in objects like those detected here. The combination of their large contribution to the background radiation and their extreme bolometric luminosities make these objects excellent candidates for being proto-ellipticals. Optical astronomers have recently shown that the UV-luminosity density of the universe increases by a factor of about 10 between z=0 and z=1 and then decreases again at higher redshifts. Using the results of a parallel submillimetre survey of the local universe, we show that both the submillimetre source density and background can be explained if the submillimetre luminosity density evolves in a similar way to the UV-luminosity density. Deep surveys in the far-infrared and sub-millimeter wavebands are revealing a new phase of galactic evolution hidden by dust. Observations with SCUBA on the JCMT show that 25% of the COBE/FIRAS background at 850 microns is being produced by high luminosity sources (L ~ 3x10^12 L_sun) at high redshifts 0.5 < z < 3+. These sources have an estimated redshift distribution that is broadly consistent with a global star-formation history that is similar to that inferred from optical observations. The sub-mm galaxies and optically selected galaxies are producing comparable quantities of stars. However, the sub-mm sources are doing so in systems that have luminosities that are an order of magnitude higher, and comoving densities an order of magnitude lower, then the optically selected galaxies. These high luminosity sources are plausibly responsible for producing the spheroidal components of massive galaxies at z ~ 2., Comment: 6 pages of text + 7 figures. One source appears to be associated with an extreme starburst galaxy at z~1, whilst the remaining four appear to lie in the redshift range 2 < z < 4. We present the results of new rest-frame far-IR observations of the z = 4.25 radio galaxy, 8C1435+635, which not only confirm that it contains an enormous quantity of dust (as first inferred from its mm-wave detection by Ivison 1995) but also allow the first meaningful constraints to be placed on the mass of this dust and associated gas. The new measurements consist of: (i) clear detections of sub-mm continuum emission at 450 and 850um obtained with the new sub-mm bolometer array, SCUBA, on the JCMT, (ii) continuum upper limits at 350, 750 and 175um obtained with SCUBA and the PHT far-IR camera aboard ISO, and (iii) a sensitive upper limit on the CO(4-3) line flux obtained with the IRAM 30-m MRT. The resulting rest-frame 33- to 238-um continuum coverage allows us to deduce that 2E8 Msun of dust at a temperature of 40 +/- 5 K is responsible for the observed mm/sub-mm emission. Using our CO upper limit, which constrains M(H2)/M(dust) to <950, we go on to calculate robust limits on the total gas reserves (H2 + HI) which are thereby constrained to between 4E10 and 1.2E12 Msun. The sub-mm properties of 8C1435+635 are thus strikingly similar to those of the z = 3.80 radio galaxy, 4C41.17, the only other high-redshift galaxy detected to date at sub-mm wavelengths whose properties appear not to be exaggerated by gravitational lensing (Dunlop et al. 1994; Hughes, Dunlop & Rawlings 1997). The inferred gas masses of both objects are sufficiently large to suggest that the formative starbursts of massive elliptical galaxies are still in progress at around z = 4. Observations of complete samples of radio galaxies spanning a range of redshifts and radio luminosities will be required to determine if the spectacular far-IR properties of 8C1435+635 and 4C41.17 are primarily due to their extreme redshifts or their extreme radio luminosities., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, LaTeX, uses emulateapj.sty (included), accepted for ApJ

We present radio to submillimeter-wave continuum spectra of 44 bright, compact extragalactic radio sources with flat spectra at centimeter wavelengths ('blazars'). Infrared J, H, and K flux densities are added to the spectra of six of these objects. These spectra are useful in comparisons of x-ray and gamma-ray measurements with the multiwaveband properties of blazars. A number of the objects have been detected as strong, hard gamma-ray sources by the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO). The millimeter-wave spectra of the gamma-ray bright blazars we observe are flatter on average than for the sample as a whole.
