1. Petri Nets for Smart Grids: The Story So Far

Abstract

Since the energy domain is in a transformative shift towards sustainability, the integration of new technologies and smart systems into traditional power grids has emerged. As an effective approach, Petri Nets (PN) have been applied to model and analyze the complex dynamics in Smart Grid (SG) environments. However, we are currently missing an overview of types of PNs applied to different areas and problems related to SGs. Therefore, this paper proposes four fundamental research questions related to the application areas of PNs in SGs, PNs types, aspects modelled by PNs in the identified areas, and the validation methods in the evaluation. The answers to the research questions are derived from a comprehensive and interdisciplinary literature analysis. The results capture a valuable overview of PNs applications in the global energy landscape and can offer indications for future research directions.

3. Interoperability-oriented Quality Assessment for Czech Open Data

Abstract

With the rapid increase of published open datasets, it is crucial to support the open data progress in smart cities while considering the open data quality. In the Czech Republic, and its National Open Data Catalogue (NODC), the open datasets are usually evaluated based on their metadata only, while leaving the content and the adherence to the recommended data structure to the sole responsibility of the data providers. The interoperability of open datasets remains unknown. This paper therefore aims to propose a novel content-aware quality evaluation framework that assesses the quality of open datasets based on five data quality dimensions. With the proposed framework, we provide a fundamental view on the interoperability-oriented data quality of Czech open datasets, which are published in NODC. Our evaluations find that domain-specific open data quality assessments are able to detect data quality issues beyond traditional heuristics used for determining Czech open data quality, increase their interoperability, and thus increase their potential to bring value for the society. Abstract

With the advancing digitization of our society, network security has become one of the critical concerns for most organizations. In this paper, we present CopAS, a system targeted at Big Data forensics analysis, allowing network operators to comfortably analyze and correlate large amounts of network data to get insights about potentially malicious and suspicious events. We demonstrate the practical usage of CopAS for insider attack detection on a publicly available PCAP dataset and show how the system can be used to detect insiders hiding their malicious activity in the large amounts of data streams generated during the operations of an organization within the network.

6. Monte Carlo Methods for Industry 4.0 Applications

Abstract

The fourth industrial revolution and the digital transformation, commonly known as Industry 4.0, is exponentially progressing in recent years. Connected computers, devices, and intelligent machines communicate with each other and interact with the environment to require only a minimum of human intervention. An important issue in Industry 4.0 is the evaluation of the quality of the process in terms of KPIs. Monte Carlo simulations can play an important role to improve the estimations. However, there is still a lack of clear workflow to conduct the Monte Carlo simulations for selecting different Monte Carlo methods. This paper, therefore, proposes a simulation flow for conducting Monte Carlo methods comparison in Industry 4.0 applications. Based on the simulation flow, we compare Cumulative Monte Carlo and Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods. The experimental results show the way to use the Monte Carlo methods in Industry 4.0 and possible limitations of the two simulation methods.

Abstract

This paper investigates the significance of context comprehension within the smart city domain by emphasizing the various perspectives of stakeholders such as ministries, municipalities, and citizens. Since the value of service provision depends on the interactions across different service systems within distinct domains and contexts, through an exploration of the value chain and formulation of value propositions, the paper aims to achieve the synergy among diverse service contexts. Using the smart city context of the Czech Republic as a case study, the paper systematically examines the implementation of context-driven methodology and provides insights for the broader development of smart cities. Also, this study highlights the importance of understanding service overlaps and identifies key issues for future service research, with potential applicability in smart city initiatives, particularly in middle and eastern EU countries.

Abstract

The key issue of smart city development usually lies in the understanding of the complexity of the services’ structure. Thus, smart city models are developed to improve current outlooks on Smart City Services’ structure by using service-dominant logic and service science. However, the contextual changes are usually not fully considered in the existing smart city models. It is in turn difficult to catch the changes among the layers in the smart city model. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a complex and innovative structure of smart city services. The main contribution of the proposed approach is to consolidate the interconnection of services that is affected by the changing context. It will also lead to a better understanding of the complexity in a smart city. The presented conceptual model has a direct influence on the practical development of a smart city. Since every country and city approaches the services’ structure differently, the smart city model is derived with the lack of a common understanding of various smart cities. In the case of accepting our model as a common solution, the sharing of knowledge and information among cities and countries would be easier and more valuable. The paper also shows how the current knowledge in service-dominant logic and service science helps to develop a new practical approach to understanding the smart city structure.
