The Daya Bay experiment was the first to report simultaneous measurements of reactor antineutrinos at multiple baselines leading to the discovery of ν¯e oscillations over km-baselines. Subsequent data has provided the world's most precise measurement of sin22θ13 and the effective mass splitting Δmee2. The experiment is located in Daya Bay, China where the cluster of six nuclear reactors is among the world's most prolific sources of electron antineutrinos. Multiple antineutrino detectors are deployed in three underground water pools at different distances from the reactor cores to search for deviations in the antineutrino rate and energy spectrum due to neutrino mixing. Instrumented with photomultiplier tubes, the water pools serve as shielding against natural radioactivity from the surrounding rock and provide efficient muon tagging. Arrays of resistive plate chambers over the top of each pool provide additional muon detection. The antineutrino detectors were specifically designed for measurements of the antineutrino flux with minimal systematic uncertainty. Relative detector efficiencies between the near and far detectors are known to better than 0.2%. With the unblinding of the final two detectors' baselines and target masses, a complete description and comparison of the eight antineutrino detectors can now be presented. This paper describes the Daya Bay detector systems, consisting of eight antineutrino detectors in three instrumented water pools in three underground halls, and their operation through the first year of eight detector data-taking.

The Daya Bay experiment consists of functionally identical antineutrino detectors immersed in pools of ultrapure water in three well-separated underground experimental halls near two nuclear reactor complexes. These pools serve both as shields against natural, low-energy radiation, and as water Cherenkov detectors that efficiently detect cosmic muons using arrays of photomultiplier tubes. Each pool is covered by a plane of resistive plate chambers as an additional means of detecting muons. Design, construction, operation, and performance of these muon detectors are described.

A search for light sterile neutrino mixing was performed with the first 217 days of data from the Daya Bay Reactor Antineutrino Experiment. The experiment's unique configuration of multiple baselines from six 2.9 GW(th) nuclear reactors to six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512 m and 561 m) and one far (1579 m) underground experimental halls makes it possible to test for oscillations to a fourth (sterile) neutrino in the 10(-3) eV(2)

A measurement of the energy dependence of antineutrino disappearance at the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment is reported. Electron antineutrinos (ν¯(e)) from six 2.9  GW(th) reactors were detected with six detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512 and 561 m) and one far (1579 m) underground experimental halls. Using 217 days of data, 41 589 (203 809 and 92 912) antineutrino candidates were detected in the far hall (near halls). An improved measurement of the oscillation amplitude sin(2)2θ(13)=0.090(-0.009)(+0.008) and the first direct measurement of the ν¯(e) mass-squared difference |Δm(ee)2|=(2.59(-0.20)(+0.19))×10(-3)  eV2 is obtained using the observed ν¯(e) rates and energy spectra in a three-neutrino framework. This value of |Δm(ee)2| is consistent with |Δm(μμ)2| measured by muon neutrino disappearance, supporting the three-flavor oscillation model.

The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment was designed to achieve a sensitivity on the value of sin22θ13 to better than 0.01 at 90% CL. The experiment consists of eight antineutrino detectors installed underground at different baselines from six nuclear reactors. With data collected with six antineutrino detectors for 55 days, Daya Bay announced the discovery of a non-zero value for sin22θ13 with a significance of 5.2 standard deviations in March 2012. The most recent analysis with 139 days of data acquired in a six-detector configuration yields sin22θ13=0.089±0.010(stat.)±0.005(syst.), which is the most precise measurement of sin22θ13 to date. © 2013.

We report an improved measurement of the neutrino mixing angle θ13 from the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. We exclude a zero value for sin22θ13 with a significance of 7.7 standard deviations. Electron antineutrinos from six reactors of 2.9 GW th were detected in six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (flux-weighted baselines of 470 m and 576 m) and one far (1648 m) underground experimental halls. Using 139 days of data, 28909 (205308) electron antineutrino candidates were detected at the far hall (near halls). The ratio of the observed to the expected number of antineutrinos assuming no oscillations at the far hall is 0.944±0.007(stat.)±0.003(syst.). Spodoptera frugiperda is a long-distance migratory pest with strong dispersal ability, fast reproduction speed and destructive feeding, so it is difficult to prevent and control. Pyrethroid insecticides are commonly used in pest insects control, And since the voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) serves as a major target of pyrethroids, it is important to study this gene for pest control. VGSC is an integral transmembrane protein consisting of approximately 2,000 amino acid residues found in neurons, myocytes, endocrine cells, and ovarian cells and involved in the initiation and propagation of excitable cellular action potentials. In this study, the cDNA sequence of the VGSC was identified from S. frugiperda by rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) which contained an open reading frame of 6,261 bp encoding a protein of 2,086 amino acids. The molecular weight of this protein was predicted to be 236 kDa, and the theoretical isoelectric point was 5.21. A phylogenetic tree constructed based on lepidopteran insects showed that the VGSC of S. frugiperda was most closely relative to that of Spodoptera litura. VGSC is a highly conserved protein with Ion channel conserved structural domains of transmembrane proteins. qPCR showed that the VGSC gene was highly expressed in the epidermis of 2nd instar larvae, and its expression level was low in other tissues, such as the foregut and Malpighian tubules. In addition, VGSC was also detected in the prepupal stage, then gradually increased in abundance after entering the adult stage, peaked at the adult males on the 4th day of pupal stage, and decreased afterwards. The recombinant plasmid of pSumo-mut-VGSC was constructed and induced to express a His tag fused VGSC protein. Polyclonal antibodies were prepared from purified recombinant VGSC protein. The antibody was ELISA-titered, and the western blotting results showed that it specifically recognized VGSC, whether it was recombinant or endogenous protein. RNA interference (RNAi) is a powerful tool that post-transcriptionally silences target genes in eukaryotic cells. However, silencing efficacy varies greatly among different insect species. Recently, we met with little success when attempting to knock down genes in the mirid bug Apolygus lucorum via dsRNA injection. The disappearance of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) could be a potential factor that restricts RNAi efficiency. Here, we found that dsRNA can be degraded in midgut fluids, and a dsRNase of A. lucorum (AldsRNase) was identified and characterized. Sequence alignment indicated that its 6 key amino acid residues and the Mg 2+ -binding site were similar to those of other insects' dsRNases. The signal peptide and endonuclease non-specific domain shared high sequence identity with the brown-winged green stinkbug Plautia stali dsRNase. AldsRNase showed high salivary gland and midgut expression and was continuously expressed through the whole life cycle, with peaks at the 4th instar ecdysis in the whole body. The purified AldsRNase protein obtained by heterologously expressed can rapidly degrade dsRNA. When comparing the substrate specificity of AldsRNase, 3 specific substrates (dsRNA, small interfering RNA, and dsDNA) were all degraded, and the most efficient degradation is dsRNA. Subsequently, immunofluorescence revealed that AldsRNase was expressed in the cytoplasm of midgut cells. The brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) is a resurgent pest of rice crops throughout Asia. We recently discovered that octopamine (OA) and OA2B2 operate in the BPH mating system, where it mediates a wide range of molecular, physiological and behavioural changes. Here, we report on outcomes of experiments designed to test the hypothesis that OA/OA2B2 signalling mediates responses to three abiotic stressors, starvation, high temperature (37 °C), and induced oxidative stress. We found per os RNAi-mediated OA2B2 silencing led to significantly decreased survival, measured in days, following exposure to each of these stressors. We selected a biologically costly process, reproductive biology, as a biotic stressor. Silencing of OA2B2 led to decreased total protein content in ovaries and fat bodies, downregulated expression of vitellogenin (Vg) and Vg receptor (VgR), inhibited fat body Vg protein synthesis, shortened the oviposition period, prolonged the preoviposition period, reduced the number of laid eggs, body weight and female longevity. In addition, the silencing treatments also led to inhibited ovarian development, and ovarian Vg uptake, reduced numbers of egg masses and offspring and lower hatching rates and population growth index. The traditional nuclear pulse signal generator outputs the nuclear pulse signal of specific waveform according to the input pulse amplitude probability distribution and counting rate, following the signal output laws of radiation detector in both pulse amplitude and time interval. However, the output waveform is generally regulated by an analog circuit, with the single waveform and difficult parameter adjustment. In this study, the digital C-R and R-C filters were explored, a cascading digital C-R or R-C filter algorithm was proposed, realizing multiple pragmatic nuclear pulse signal outputs through the serial or parallel connection of multiple digital filters. The actual test results show that the nuclear pulse signal generator constructed by this algorithm can simulate the nuclear pulse signals under different detectors and counting rates, thus expanding the scope of application and improving the flexibility of digital nuclear pulse signal generators., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. In Asian rice systems, Cyrtorhinus lividipennis Reuter is an important predator that preys on rice planthopper eggs and young nymphs, as a primary food source. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) acts in many physiological and biochemical processes in insects. We cloned the full-length complementary DNA of C. lividipennis ClALT. Expression analysis showed higher expression in the fat body and midgut compared to other tissues. It is expressed in all C. lividipennis developmental stages and at least four organs. Silencing of ClALT by RNA interference significantly decreased the ClALT enzyme activity and ClALT expression compared to dsGFP-treated controls at 2 days after emergence (DAE). Silencing of ClALT influenced free hemolymph amino acid compositions, resulting in a reduction of Aspartic acid (Asp) and Alanine (Ala) proportions, and increased Cysteine (Cys) and Valine (Val) proportions in females at 2 DAE. dsClALT treatments led to decreased soluble total protein concentrations in ovary and fat body, and to lower reduced vitellogenin (Vg) expression, body weight, and the numbers of laid eggs. The double-stranded RNA viruse treatments also led to prolonged preoviposition periods and hindered ovarian development. Western blot analysis indicated that silencing ClALT also led to reduced fat body Vg protein abundance at 2 DAE. The antibiotic jinggangmycin (JGM) is broadly applied in Chinese rice producing regions to control rice blight, a fungal disease. Aside from protecting rice plants from the disease, JGM leads to the unexpected action of stimulating brown planthopper (BPH; Nilaparvata lugens ; Hemiptera: Delphacidae) reproduction to the extent it can influence population sizes. The JGM-induced BPH population growth has potential for severe agricultural problems and we are working to understand and mitigate the mechanisms of the enhanced reproduction. UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs) are multifunctional detoxification enzymes responsible for biotransformation of diverse lipophilic compounds. The biological significance of this enzyme family in insect fecundity is not fully understood, however, upregulated UGT12 in JGM-treated BPH, may influence fecundity through metabolism of developmental hormones. This idea prompted our hypothesis that NlUGT12 is a positive modulator of BPH reproductive biology. JGM treatment led to significant increases in accumulations of mRNA encoding Nl UGT12, numbers of eggs laid, oviposition period, juvenile hormone III titers, and fat body, and ovarian protein contents. dsUGT12 treatment suppressed NlUGT12 expression and reversed JGM-enhanced effects, resulting in under-developed ovaries and reduced expression of juvenile hormone acid methyltransferase and the JH receptor, methoprene tolerant. Application of the JH analog, methoprene, on dsUGT12 treated-females partially reversed the dsUTG12 influence on vitellogenin synthesis and on NlUGT12 expression. These results represent an important support for our hypothesis.

Hexokinase is a rate-limiting enzyme that plays pivotal roles in glucose homeostasis and energy metabolism via glucose (Glc) phosphorylation and Glc signaling mediation. Previous investigations have revealed the modulatory role of Hexokinase (Hex) genes involved in proper glucose regulation during insect diapause and embryo development, whereas whether it functions in insect fecundity remains largely unknown. We aimed to explore the relationship between Triazophos (TZP)-induced Hex-1 and fecundity of female Nilaparvata lugens. In this study, Hex-1 expression were characterized at different developmental stages and in various tissues of N. lugens, with the highest expression registered in brain tissues and 5th instar nymph. The present findings indicated that TZP + dsHex-1 silencing significantly reduced protein synthesis, including the fat body and ovarian protein content of female adults. Meanwhile, the glycometabolism with respect to the soluble sugar, trehalose and glucose content in female adults were strikingly influenced as a result of Hex-1 knockdown. The relative transcript level of Hex-1, vitellogenin (NlVg) and vitellogenin receptor (NlVgR) considerably decreased in TZP + dsHex-1 treated females compared to TZP and TZP + dsGFP-treated groups. More importantly, TZP + dsHex-1 silencing led to reduced number of eggs laid and vitellogenin (Vg) accumulation as well as retarded ovary development compared with TZP-treated and TZP + dsGFP-treated groups. The small brown planthopper (SBPH), Laodelphax striatellus (Fallen) is a major pest insect of rice, wheat, and maize in China and other countries. SBPH not only damage rice plants through sucking plant sap, but also transmits rice virus diseases, for example, striped virus disease (RSV), black streaked dwarf, and maize rough disease virus. Therefore, understanding of pesticide-induced stimulation of reproduction in SBPH is of great significance for the pest management. Our previous study discovered that triazophos (TZP) increased reproduction of SBPH. But the molecular mechanisms are unclear. Here, by using proteomic analysis, we screened and cloned the gene of long chain fatty acid coenzyme A ligase (FACL), and silenced FACL to examine influences of TZP on reproduction and glycerin content in SBPH females. In TZP-treated females vs control females, there were 41 differential proteins in 18 pathways related to reproduction, of which 8 were up-regulated and 33 were down-regulated. TZP + dsFACL eliminated TZP-induced stimulation of reproduction of SBPH females (↓about 73.92%) and decreased glycerin content and body weight (↓about 19.93% and 13.62%). Pyruvate kinase (PYK) operates in the glycolytic pathway, responsible for regulating the balance between glycolysis and gluconeogenesis. The previous work indicates PYK acts in development of Drosophila embryos and in embryonic muscle growth, from which it may be inferred that PYK acts in insect fecundity. More to the point, as a central enzyme in the glycolytic pathway, PYK acts in many energy-spending functions in most organisms. On the background findings that triazophos (TZP) stimulates fecundity via increase activities of several genes in brown planthoppers, Nilaparvata lugens, we investigated the combined influence of TZP and silencing a N. lugens PYK (NlPYK) on reproduction-linked biological performance parameters. Here, we report that TZP+dsNlPYK treatments led to reduced (by 26%) ovarian, but not fat body, protein content relative to controls. Ovarian (35%) and fat body (54%) soluble sugar contents were reduced. TZP+dsNlPYK treatments also led to reduced (by about 24%) fecundity, expressed as numbers of eggs laid. The jinggangmycin (JGM) is a widely used fungicide for controlling the rice sheath blight, Rhizoctonia solani, in China. Previous experiments under lab conditions showed that JGM foliar spray suppressed Sogatella furcifera (Horvath) reproduction. However, the molecular mechanisms of JGM-driven changes in S. furcifera reproduction are unclear. Therefore, we selected carboxylesterase precursor (EST-1) as a target gene for silencing by RNAi based on gene expression profiles. The present results demonstrated that JGM and control + dsSfEST-1 treatments significantly reduced the number of eggs laid (down by 58% and 54%, respectively), oviposition period (down by 57% and 38%, respectively), and longevity (down by 32% and 38%, respectively) in adult females compared with untreated controls, while no pronounced differences in the preoviposition period were observed. Meanwhile, the dietary control + dsSfEST-1 treatment also severely impeded protein synthesis, specifically soluble ovarian protein content (down by 20% and 24%, respectively) and soluble sugar content (down by 42% and 35%, respectively), which led to stunted growth and reduced body weight in adult females. PHF7 exhibits male-specific expression in early germ cells, germline stem cells and spermatogonia in insects, and its expression promotes spermatogenesis in germ cells when they are present in a male soma. However, the influence of male-specific PHF7 on female reproductive biology via mating remains unclear. Thus, we investigated the potential impacts of male PHF7, existed in seminal fluid of Nilaparvata lugens (NlPHF7), on fecundity and population growth via mating. Our results revealed that suppressing male NlPHF7 expression by RNAi led to decreases in body weight, soluble accessory gland protein content, arginine content, and reproductive organ development in males, resulting in significant reduction of oviposition periods and fecundity in females, and significant decrease in body weight, fat body and ovarian protein content, yeast-like symbionts abundance, ovarian development and vitellogenin gene expression in their female mating partners. Similarly, suppression of NlPHF7 expression in males mated with the control female reduced population growth and egg hatching rate, but did not influence gender ratio. We infer that NlPHF7 play a role important in stimulating female fecundity via mating. This study provides valuable information by identifying a potentially effective target gene for managing BPH population through RNAi.

The small brown planthopper (SBPH), Laodelphax striatellus (Fallen), is a serious pest insect of rice, wheat, and maize in China. SBPH not only sucks plant sap but also transmits plant disease viruses, causing serious damage. These viruses include rice striped virus disease (RSV disease), black streaked dwarf, and maize rough disease virus. SBPH outbreaks are related to the overuse of pesticides in China. Some pesticides, such as triazophos, stimulate the reproduction of SBPH, but an antibiotic fungicide jinggangmycin (JGM) suppresses its reproduction. However, mechanisms of decreased reproduction of SBPH induced by JGM remain unclear. The present findings show that JGM suppressed reproduction of SBPH (↓approximately 35.7%) and resulted in the down-regulated expression of glucose dehydrogenase (GDH). GDH-silenced control females (control+dsGDH) show that the number of eggs laid was reduced by 48.6% compared to control females. Biochemical tests show that the total lipid and fatty acid contents in JGM-treated and control+dsGDH females decreased significantly. The X-ray fluorescence well logging technology is a significant method that can make quantitative analysis orsemi-quantitative analysis on the wellface. This method is very important to mineral exploration. The spectrum shifting is often observed in the X-rayfluorescence well logging because the temperature in the well changes acutely. The hardware is used to release the spectrum shifting and the software method is used to rescale the tiny spectrum shifting. There are too manyspectra to be rescaled in a well logging task by manually. In this paper, an auto method to rescale spectrum shifting, via the expert system model which is based on the special process to rescale spectrum shifting in manual, is presented. The symmetric zero-area conversion method, which is not sensitive to the changes of the baseline, is used to research the peaks. And then, the characteristic peaks will be identified by the standard errors, automatically. The prior knowledge (the last energy scale) and the gauss probability density function are used to analyze the peaks qualitatively and confirm the energy of characteristic peaks. Then the least square method is applied energy calibration. The singular deviation point, away from the calibrationline, will be rejected and the energy ratio will be obtained again. This method is applied for rescaling spectrum shifting in 322 spectra and obtains a satisfactory achievement.

The mineral constituents of the rock sample can be analyzed with in-situ energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis technology (In-situ EDXRF), the matrix effect of rock sample will effects on measurement results. The Monte Carlo simulation method is used to conduct fluorescence analysis spectrum with ideal measurement conditions, which provides analytical data for matrix effect research. The measured spectrum of seventeen kinds rock samples are being simulated, which has the same Cu content. Therefore, the influences with matrix effect of rock sample in in-situ EDXRF take Cu element for example. Based on correlation between Cu Kα X-ray intensity and spectral parameters, considering elements similarity of all kinds rock samples, it is found that the variation the Cu Kα X-ray intensity not only by the control of rock elements composition or rock classification. The matrix effect of rock samples must be classified according correlation between Cu Kα X-ray intensity and spectral parameters. After the matrix effect classification, fifteen kinds of rock samples, which belong to the same matrix effect, can be corrected more effective. Based on principal component analysis of similar matrix effect rock samples, it is found that the scattering background, target element K-series X-ray of X-ray tube and its incoherent scatter intensity can be a good description of Cu Kα X-ray intensity which is affected by rock matrix, thus it can be used to correct the Cu element measurement results. Certainly, this technology can also provide reference for matrix effect correction to other elements in rock.

In order to research the effect of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis on the results in the sample’s micro particles, MCNPX models had been established for an X-ray fluorescence analyzer in this paper. It had studied the characteristics of the samples with different particle sizes, the fluorescence peak counts, the peak to total ratios and the peak to source ratios. A micro particle analysis experiment had been designed for its verification. The results showed that: as for the relationship between the fluorescence intensity and the particle sizes, the MCNPX calculations were consistent with the theoretical, but contrary with the experimental results; the reason is that some hypotheses about samples in the MCNPX models were contrary with the actual states; the samples were crushed by grinding to small particles and tableting process, the MCNPX calculations and experimental results can be conversion; when the particle sizes of the samples reached the certain sizes, the fluorescence peak counts, the peak to total ratios and the peak to source ratios were stable value; within a particular size range, the influence of the particle size effects cannot be ignored, otherwise this influence can be ignored. The research methods and conclusions in this paper can provide a technical reference guide for X-ray analysis in practices.

Semiconductor detector is widely used in energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence measurements due to its excellent performance. In this paper, Si-PIN and CdTe semiconductor detectors were studied, performances of the two detectors were compared in material properties, detection efficiency, energy resolution and other aspects. Focused on the performance of the detectors influenced by the thickness of detector sensitive area, energy of incident X-ray, shaping time of post-stage circuit, and analyzed the differences of energy spectrum caused by escape peaks and hole trailing. Aiming at the problem of incomplete hole collection in detector, a digital multi-channel analyzer (DMCA) based on FPGA with rise-time discriminator was designed, it could reduce the influence of hole trailing effectively and improve energy resolution. The experimentation results indicate that the detection efficiency of Si-PIN and CdTe is roughly equal when energy is below 15 keV while CdTe has much higher detection efficiency than Si-PIN when energy is above 15 keV. The optimum forming time of the Si-PIN detector is about 10 μs, and the CdTe detector is about 2.6 μs, so the CdTe detector is more suitable for the high count rate condition. Si-PIN detector has better energy resolution than CdTe detector for different energy incident X-ray. CdTe detector has obvious hole tailing effect and the energy resolution of CdTe detector is significantly improved by using DMCA with rise-time discrimination.

The brown planthopper (BPH) is a devastating pest of rice throughout Asia. In this paper we document the BPH biogeographic range expansion in China over the 20-year period, 1992 to 2012. We posed the hypothesis that the range expansion is due to a syndrome of adaptations to the continuous presence of agricultural chemicals (insecticides and a fungicide) over the last 40 years. With respect to biogeography, BPH ranges have expanded by 13% from 1992 to 1997 and by another 3% from 1997 to 2012. In our view, such expansions may follow primarily from the enhancing effects of JGM, among other agricultural chemicals, and from global warming. JGM treatments led to increased thermotolerance, recorded as decreased mortality under heat stress at 40 ± 1 °C (down from 80% to 55%) and increased fecundity (by 49%) at 34 °C. At the molecular level, JGM treatments led to increased abundances of mRNA encoding Acetyl Co-A carboxylase (Acc) (up 25%) and Hsp70 (up 32%) in experimental BPH. RNAi silencing of Hsp70 and Acc eliminated the JGM effects on fecundity and silencing Hsp70 reduced JGM-induced thermotolerance. Integrated with global climate change scenarios, such syndromes in pest insect species have potential for regional- and global-scale agricultural disasters.

Previous studies have demonstrated that the agricultural antibiotic jinggangmycin (JGM) stimulates reproduction in the brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens Stål and that the stimulation of brown planthopper reproduction induced by JGM is regulated by the fatty acid synthase (FAS) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) genes. However, a key issue in the stimulation of reproduction induced by pesticides involves the growth and development of oocytes. Therefore, the present study investigated oocyte changes via transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and changes in hormone levels (juvenile hormones (JH) and 20-hydroxyecdysone (20 E)) in JGM-treated females. TEM observations showed that the size of the lipid droplets in the oocytes of JGM-treated females, compared with those in the oocytes of the control females, significantly reduced by 32.6 and 29.8% at 1 and 2 d after emergence (1 and 2 DAE), respectively. In addition, the JH levels of JGM-treated females at 1 and 2 DAE were increased by 49.7 and 45.7%, respectively, whereas 20 E levels decreased by 36.0 and 30.0%, respectively. We conclude that JGM treatments lead to substantial changes in lipid metabolism, which are directly and indirectly related to stimulation of reproduction of brown planthopper together with our previous findings., (© The Authors 2016. Global warming has received growing attentions about its potential threats to human in recent, however little is known about its effects on transfer of heavy metals in agro-ecosystem, especially for Cd in rice. Pot experiments were conducted to evaluate Cd/Cu translocation in a contaminated soil-rice system under Free Air Temperature Increase (FATI). The results showed that warming gradually decreased soil porewater pH and increased water-soluble Cd/Cu concentration, reduced formation of iron plaque on root surface, and thus significantly increased total uptake of Cd/Cu by rice. Subsequently, warming significantly promoted Cd translocation from root to shoot, and increased Cd distribution percentage in shoot, while Cu was not significantly affected. Enhanced Cd uptake and translocation synergistically resulted in higher rice grain contamination with increasing concentration from 0.27 to 0.65 and 0.14-0.40 mg kg(-1) for Indica and Japonica rice, respectively. However increase of Cu in brown grain was only attributed to its uptake enhancement under warming. In our previous study with the brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens, triazophos (tzp) treatments led to substantial up-regulation of a male spermatogenesis-associated protein 5-like gene (NlSPATA5) compared to untreated controls. Mating with tzp-treated males significantly increased fecundity (as numbers of eggs laid), relative to females mated with untreated males. Because SPATA5 acts in mammalian sperm development and is expressed in testes, we posed the hypothesis that NlSPATA5 occurs in BPH seminal fluid and it operates in fecundity via mating. We tested the hypothesis by investigating the influence of suppressing NlSPATA5 expression in BPH males on fecundity. Reduced expression of NlSPATA5 led to decreased male accessory gland protein content and reproductive system development compared to controls. These changes in males led to prolonged pre-oviposition periods and decreased fecundity in females. For both genders, we recorded no difference in the body weight, oviposition periods, and longevity compared to controls. NlSPATA5 suppression in males also led to decreased fat body and ovarian protein content, yeast-like symbionts abundance and ovarian development as well as vitellogenin gene expression in their mating partners. We infer that increased NlSPATA5 expression may be one molecular mechanism of tzp-driven reproduction and population increases in BPH.

This paper proposes the analyzing method of adopting wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry to measure the content of Cu and Zn in PM2.5. PTFE membrane is used to prepare standard samples and atmospheric particulate samples; a research into sample cup’s structure，using polypropylene film of 6.7 μm to help to improved sample cup to package atmospheric particulate samples. The improved sample cup is used to measure the content of Cu and Zn in atmospheric particulate, which can obviously reduce background, improve peak/background ratio and decrease detection limit to target element; discussion is made on the measurement condition of Cu and Zn in PM2.5: taking Kα line as analysis line of Cu and Zn, selecting PX10 as analyzer crystal, using 300 μm pitch collimator, adopting scintillation detector for the Kα of Zn, applying the integrating of flow-gas proportional counter and closed-end proportional counter to the Kα of Cu, setting 50 kV, 50 mA as operating voltage and current. The prepared Cu and Zn standard sample is used to set up working curve, the results show that their linear correlations are better, accuracy are higher, relative standard deviations of Cu and Zn are 2.43% and 2.00%(n=8), detection limit are 0.028 and 0.021 μg·cm-2respectively, and analysis of the single sample only need 60 s. To sum up, this method can quickly and accurately analyze the content of Cu and Zn in PM2.5, and provide scientific basis for study the element content characteristics and source apportionment.

The brown plant hopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens Stål (Hemiptera: Delphacidae), is a major pest affecting rice in Asia, and outbreaks of this pest are closely linked to pesticide-induced stimulation of reproduction. Therefore, the BPH is a classic example of a resurgent pest. However, the effects of different genes on the regulation of pesticide-induced reproductive stimulation in the BPH are unclear. In this study, the regulatory effects of acyl-coenzyme A oxidase (ACO) on the reproduction and biochemistry of the BPH were investigated with gene silencing. The number of eggs laid per female by triazophos (TZP)+dsACO BPH females was significantly lower than those of TZP-treated (without ACO silencing) or TZP+GFP females (negative control), with the number of eggs decreasing by 30.8% (from 529.5 to 366.3) and 32.0% (from 540.5 to 366.3), respectively. The preoviposition period, oviposition period, and longevity of the TZP-treated females were also influenced by dsACO treatment. Additionally, the amounts of crude fat, protein, and some fatty acids (oleic acid, palmitic acid, linoleic acid, stearic acid, and myristoleic acid) in TZP+dsACO females were significantly lower than in TZP-treated females. Monitoring atmospheric particulate matter requires real-time analysis, such as particulate matter's concentrations, their element types and contents. An analyzer which is based on β and X rays analysis techniques is designed to meet those demands. Applying β-ray attenuation law and energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis principle, the paper introduces the analyzer's overall design scheme, structure, FPGA circuit hardware and software for the analyzer. And the analyzer can measure atmospheric particulate matters' concentration, elements and their contents by on-line analysis. Pure elemental particle standard samples were prepared by deposition, and those standard samples were used to set the calibration for the analyzer in this paper. The analyzer can monitor atmospheric particulate matters concentration, 30 kinds of elements and content, such as TSP, PM10 and PM2.5. Comparing the measurement results from the analyzer to Chengdu Environmental Protection Agency's monitoring results for monitoring particulate matters, a high consistency is obtained by the application in eastern suburbs of Chengdu. Meanwhile, the analyzer are highly sensitive in monitoring particulate matters which contained heavy metal elements (such as As, Hg, Cd, Cr, Pb and so on). The analyzer has lots of characteristics through technical performance testing, such as continuous measurement, low detection limit, quick analysis, easy to use and so on. In conclusion, the analyzer can meet the demands for analyzing atmospheric particulate matter's concentration, elements and their contents in urban environmental monitoring.

Aiming at the self-excitation effect on the interference of measurements which exist in the process of Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence method for uranium measurement. To solve the problem of radioactive isotopes only used as excitation source in determination of uranium. Utilizing the micro X-ray tube to test Self-excitation effect to get a comparison of the results obtained by three different uranium ore samples--109 Cd, 241 Am and Mirco X-ray tube. The results showed that self-excitation effect produced the area measure of characteristic X-ray peak is less than 1% of active condition, also the interference of measurements can be negligible. Photoelectric effect cross-section excited by 109 Cd is higher, corresponding fluorescence yield is higher than excited by 241 Am as well due to characteristics X-ray energy of 109 Cd, 22.11 & 24.95 KeV adjacent to absorption edge energy of L(α), 21.75 KeV, based on the above, excitation efficiency by 109 Cd is higher than 241 Am; The fact that measurement error excited by 241 Am is significantly greater than by 109 Cd is mainly due to peak region overlap between L energy peaks of uranium and Scattering peak of 241 Am, 26.35 keV, These factors above caused the background of measured Spectrum higher; The error between the uranium content in ore samples which the X-ray tube as the excitation source and the chemical analysis results is within 10%. Conclusion: This paper come to the conclusion that the technical quality of uranium measurement used X-ray tube as excitation source is superior to that in radioactive source excitation mode.

The antibiotic jinggangmycin (JGM) is an agrochemical product widely used in China for controlling rice sheath blight, Rhizoctonia solani. Unexpectedly, it stimulates reproduction in the brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stål). However, the underlying molecular mechanisms of the stimulation are unclear. The present investigation demonstrates that adipose triglyceride lipase (Atgl) is one of the enzymes involved in the JGM-stimulated reproduction in BPH. Silence of Atgl in JGM-treated (JGM + dsAtgl) females eliminated JGM-stimulated fecundity of BPH females. In addition, Atgl knockdown significantly reduced the protein and glycerin contents in the ovaries and fat bodies of JGM + dsAtgl females required for reproduction. We conclude that Atgl is one of the key enzymes responsible for JGM-stimulated reproduction in BPH.

A major challenge in ecology lies in understanding the coexistence of intraguild species, well documented at the organismal level, but not at the molecular level. This study focused on the effects of the antibiotic, jinggangmycin (JGM), a fungicide widely used in Asian rice agroecosystems, on reproduction of insects within the planthopper guild, including the brown planthopper (BPH) Nilaparvata lugens and the white-backed planthopper (WBPH) Sogatella furcifera, both serious resurgence rice pests. JGM exposure significantly increased BPH fecundity and population growth, but suppressed both parameters in laboratory and field WBPH populations. We used digital gene expression and transcriptomic analyses to identify a panel of differentially expressed genes, including a set of up-regulated genes in JGM-treated BPH, which were down-regulated in JGM-treated WBPH. RNAi silencing of Acetyl Co-A carboxylase (ACC), highly expressed in JGM-treated BPH, reduced ACC expression (by > 60%) and eliminated JGM-induced fecundity increases in BPH. These findings support our hypothesis that differences in ACC expression separates intraguild species at the molecular level.

The miniature transmission X-ray tube is widely used in energy dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Analysis (EDXRFA). The miniature transmission X-ray tube with a small, low power consumption, X-ray emission efficiency that can be made the excitation source of handheld X-ray energy dispersive fluorescence analyzer. Beryllium (Be) is the most commonly used X-ray window material. But beryllium is expensive and toxic. At the same time set filtering window by aluminum (Al) to reducing low-energy scattering rays. This paper be adopted Al for exit window material of miniature transmission X-ray tube, achieve high-energy rays transmission and low-energy scattered radiation shielding, at the same time reduce production cost and difficulty. The present paper simulate the X-ray tube output spectrum of silver (Ag) target and aluminum window with different thickness by MCNP5. We consider the X-ray of low energy part is completely shielded when aluminum windows thickness is greater than 1.5 mm. We can conclude that 2 μm and 0.8 mm are the best combination of target thickness and aluminum windows through comparative analysis of existing research results. Then we can get flux of high energy part is big and low energy part is small when the target is 2 μm thick Ag and the window is 0.8 mm thick Al.

The brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens, sugar transporter gene 6 (Nlst6) is a facilitative glucose/fructose transporter (often called a passive carrier) expressed in midgut that mediates sugar transport from the midgut lumen to hemolymph. The influence of down regulating expression of sugar transporter genes on insect growth, development, and fecundity is unknown. Nonetheless, it is reasonable to suspect that transporter-mediated uptake of dietary sugar is essential to the biology of phloem-feeding insects. Based on this reasoning, we posed the hypothesis that silencing, or reducing expression, of a BPH sugar transporter gene would be deleterious to the insects. To test our hypothesis, we examined the effects of Nlst6 knockdown on BPH biology. Reducing expression of Nlst6 led to profound effects on BPHs. It significantly prolonged the pre-oviposition period, shortened the oviposition period, decreased the number of eggs deposited and reduced body weight, compared to controls. Nlst6 knockdown also significantly decreased fat body and ovarian (particularly vitellogenin) protein content as well as vitellogenin gene expression. Experimental BPHs accumulated less fat body glucose compared to controls. We infer that Nlst6 acts in BPH growth and fecundity, and has potential as a novel target gene for control of phloem-feeding pest insects.

The X-ray Fluorescence Analysis(XRFA) is an important and efficient method on the element anylsis and is used in geology, industry and environment protection. But XRFA has a backdraw that the determination limit and accuracy are effected by the matrix of the sample. Now the fundamental parameter is usually used to calculate the content of elements in XRFA, and it is an efficient method if the matrix and net area of characteristic X-ray peak are obtained. But this is invalide in in-stu XRFA. Also the method of net area and the "black material" of sample are the key point of the fundamental parameter method when the Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Analysis(EDXRFA) method is used in the low content sample. In this paper a advanced fundamental parameter method is discussed. The advanced fundamental parameter method includes the spectra analysis and the fundamental parameter method, which inserts the overlapping peaks separation method into the iteration process of the fundamental parameter method. The advanced method can resolve the net area and the quantitative analysis. The advanced method is used to analyse the standard sample. Compare to the content obtained from the coefficient method, the precision of Cu, Ni and Zn is better than coeffieciency method. The result shows that the advanced method could improve the precision of the EDXRFA, so the advanced method is better than the coefficient method.

N, Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Br, Rb, Sr, Ba and Pb in herb tea were determined by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry with pressed powder pellets. The measuring conditions of target elements were investigated, including how to select its analytical line. In addition to Ba and Pb using L line, Kalpha line was selected for the rest. When the Compton scattered radiation of Rh Kalpha was measured, The X-ray tube voltage should be appropriately reduced, and the appropriate tube current should be selected. The matrix effect was corrected by empirical coefficient method and using scattered radiation (the Rayleigh scattered radiation of Rh Lalpha, the scattered background of 0.1876 nm wavelength position and the Compton scattered radiation of Rh Kalpha) as internal standard, and the spectral overlapping interference of some elements (N, Na, Ca, Ti, Mn, Sr and Ba) was corrected. For the target elements, the detection limit of this method was low, and its accuracy and precision were high. The results showed that there were abandon of elements in herb tea, of which different kinds had different components, even the same kind of herb tea with different source had some difference in element and content more or less, however, there was a lot of similarity between the features of its components. In a word, this method could achieve multi-element determination of herb tea, and it was simple in operation, low cost, rapid, and accurate.

The brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) (Hemiptera: Delphacidae), is a typical pest in which population resurgence can be induced by insecticides. Warmer global temperatures, associated with anthropogenic climate change, are likely to have marked ecological effects on terrestrial ecosystems. However, the effects of elevated CO2 (eCO2) concentrations on the resurgence of N. lugens that have been treated with pesticides used for transgenic Bt rice cultivation are not fully understood. The present study investigated changes in the protein content, soluble sugar content, free amino acid level, vitellogenin (Nlvg) mRNA expression, and the population growth of N. lugens on transgenic Bt rice (TT51) following triazaophos foliar spray under conditions of eCO2. The results showed that the protein content in the fat bodies and ovaries of N. lugens adult females in TT51 treated with 40 ppm triazophos under eCO2 was significantly higher than under ambient CO2 (aCO2) and was also higher than that in females feeding on the non-transgenic parent (MH63) under aCO2 at different days after emergence (DAEs). The soluble sugar content and free amino level of adult females in TT51 treated with 40 ppm triazophos under eCO2 was significantly higher than under aCO2 and was also higher than in MH63 under aCO2 at 1 and 3 DAE. The Nlvg mRNA expression level of N. lugens adult females in TT51 treated with 40 ppm triazophos under eCO2 was significantly higher than under aCO2 and was also higher than in MH63 under aCO2 at 1 and 3 DAE. The population number of N. lugens in TT51 treated with 40 ppm triazophos under eCO2 was significantly higher than under aCO2 and was also higher than in MH63 under aCO2. The present findings provide important information for integrated pest management with transgenic varieties and a better understanding of the resurgence mechanism of N. lugens under eCO2., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Inc. Three planthopper species, the brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens Stål, the white-backed planthopper (WBPH), Sogatella furcifera Horvath, and the small brown planthopper (SBPH), Laodelphax striatella Fallén, often co-occur in rice grown regions of China. The present investigation examined effects of two pesticides, triazophos (TZP) and jinggangmycin (JGM) (a fungicide), on reproduction of BPH, WBPH, and SBPH. The results showed that TZP stimulated the fecundity of the three planthopper species. Interestingly, JGM stimulated the fecundity of BPH but suppressed the fecundity of WBPH. In addition, TZP and JGM had a significant effect on the preoviposition period (PVD), the oviposition period (OPD), and the longevity of adult females (LAF) of BPH and WBPH. Based on these findings, to avoid resurgence occurrence of planthoppers, we suggest that the application of TZP should be banned in rice fields, that JGM should be used to control rice sheath blight at the early growth stages of rice (with WBPH occurrence and without BPH occurrence)., (Copyright © 2014. The pesticide-induced stimulation of reproduction in pests is one of the most important mechanisms of pest resurgence. There have been numerous reports on the insecticide-induced stimulation of reproduction. However, the relationship between pesticide application method and pest resurgence (stimulation of reproduction) has received little attention. Here, we studied the effect of two treatment methods, triazophos (TZP) and jinggangmycin (JGM), on the protein content in the ovaries and fat bodies of the brown planthopper (BPH) Nilaparvata lugens Stål. The results showed that pesticide treatment methods significantly affected the protein content in the ovaries and fat bodies of BPH. In addition, grand means (means of main effect) of the protein content at 2 and 3 days after emergence (2 and 3 DAE) for foliar sprays was significantly higher than that observed after topical treatments, which increased by 23.9% (from 1.42 to 1.76) and 8.82% (from 4.42 to 4.81), respectively. No significant differences on the protein content in the ovaries and fat bodies for the JGM topical treatment were observed compared with controls. However, the protein content for JGM foliar sprays was significantly higher than that for the controls. The protein contents in both topical and spray treatments of TZP were significantly higher than those of the controls. Ovarian protein is mainly yolk protein. There is a positive correlation between ovarian protein content and the number of eggs laid. These findings show that foliar spray of the pesticides promotes the resurgence of BPH. Therefore, the foliar spray of some pesticides, such as JGM, should be avoided for the control of pests, which is the sideeffects of the fungicide on non-target insect pests' occurrence., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Inc. Based on the 7th forestry inventory data of Shandong Province, this paper estimated the carbon storage and carbon density of forest stands, and analyzed their distribution characteristics according to dominant tree species, age groups and forest category using the volume-derived biomass method and average-biomass method. In 2007, the total carbon storage of the forest stands was 25. 27 Tg, of which the coniferous forests, mixed conifer broad-leaved forests, and broad-leaved forests accounted for 8.6%, 2.0% and 89.4%, respectively. The carbon storage of forest age groups followed the sequence of young forests > middle-aged forests > mature forests > near-mature forests > over-mature forests. The carbon storage of young forests and middle-aged forests accounted for 69.3% of the total carbon storage. Timber forest, non-timber product forest and protection forests accounted for 37.1%, 36.3% and 24.8% of the total carbon storage, respectively. The average carbon density of forest stands in Shandong Province was 10.59 t x hm(-2), which was lower than the national average level. This phenomenon was attributed to the imperfect structure of forest types and age groups, i. e., the notably higher percentage of timber forests and non-timber product forest and the excessively higher percentage of young forests and middle-aged forest than mature forests.

The brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) is a serious pest of rice crops in the temperate and tropical regions of Asia and Australia, and it is also a classic example of an insecticide-induced resurgent pest. Brown planthopper outbreaks have been reported to be closely associated with pesticide application. Previous studies have shown that the insecticide triazophos enhances thermal tolerance and fecundity in brown planthopper. However, the effects of triazophos and high temperature on reproductive capacity have not been studied in high temperature-conditioned reciprocal pairs of adult males and females. The present experiments showed that triazophos enhanced the reproductive capacity of brown planthopper under high temperature (34°C). The number of eggs laid by females treated with 40 ppm triazophos at 34°C approximately doubled compared with untreated insects. Furthermore, the triazophos-induced fecundity enhancement at 34°C was significantly greater than that at 26°C, and the number of eggs laid for mating pair of adult males at 34°C with adult females under 34°C (♂(34) × ♀(34)) were significantly greater than that of adult males at 26°C (♂(26) × ♀3(4)), suggesting that this insecticide enhances the resistance of brown planthopper to high-temperature stress. Insecticide-induced enhancement of reproductive capacity in brown planthopper under high temperatures should be of great concern, and it has important implications for forecasting future brown planthopper outbreaks as well as the pesticide-selection process.

The present study illustrates that different day intervals (DIs) between the sequential infestations of two pest species, the rice leaffolder (RLF) Cnaphalocrocis medinalis Guenée (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and the white-backed rice planthopper (WBPH) Sogatella furcifera Horváth (Hemiptera: Delphacidae), have a significant impact on the rice yield loss rate (YLR) and on the carbohydrate contents of rice plants. For WBPH release after RLF release (WRARR), the YLR decreased with the increasing DIs, and the YLR at the 24 DI was significantly lower compared to that at the 6 and 12 DIs and had a minimum value for a simultaneous infestation of the two pest species (SITS). In contrast, for RLF release after WBPH release (RRAWR), the YLR at the 24 DI had a maximum value and was significantly higher compared to that at the 6 and 12 DIs and the SITS. These findings indicate that damaged rice plants gradually recover, with an increase in the DI for WRARR. The above results were demonstrated by biochemical tests. In the energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrum analysis, scintillation detector such as NaI (Tl) detector usually has a low energy resolution at around 8%. The low energy resolution causes problems in spectral data analysis especially in the high background and low counts condition, it is very limited to strip the overlapped spectrum, and the more overlapping the peaks are, the more difficult to peel the peaks, and the qualitative and quantitative analysis can't be carried out because we can't recognize the peak address and peak area. Based on genetic algorithm and immune algorithm, we build a new racial algorithm which uses the Euclidean distance as the judgment of evolution, the maximum relative error as the iterative criterion to be put into overlapped spectrum analysis, then we use the Gaussian function to simulate different overlapping degrees of the spectrum, and the racial algorithm is used in overlapped peak separation and full spectrum simulation, the peak address deviation is in +/- 3 channels, the peak area deviation is no more than 5%, and it is proven that this method has a good effect in energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence overlapped spectrum analysis.

Applying Monte Carlo method, the present paper simulates the emitted X-ray spectrum of miniature X-ray tube with thirteen thickness of beryllium window in the range from 50 to 500 microm. By analyzing the characteristic of the spectrums, the reasonable choice of thickness of beryllium window relies on the application and for the beryllium window it is not the thinner the better. Taking in-situ EDXRF as an example, though the emission X-ray intensity is higher as the thickness of the beryllium window becomes thinner, the proportion of useless low-energy X-ray (<5 keV) intensity to all energy X-ray intensity also is higher (>20%). The accuracy of in-situ EDXRF will be reduced when the high-throughput low-energy X-ray enters the detector. Therefore, this paper puts forward several parameters as judgment index for beryllium window thickness, which is described as follows: 1)The intensity ratios of the K-series X-ray to middle-energy (5-25 keV) bremsstrahlung and middle-high-energy (5-50 keV) bremsstrahlung (F1 and F3); 2)The intensity ratios of useless low-energy X-ray (<5 keV) to middle-energy (5-25 keV) X-ray and middle-high-energy (5-50 keV) X-ray (F2 and F4), it can reflect the relative intensity of useless low-energy X-ray. The simulation results demonstrate that with the increase in the beryllium window thickness, the value of F1 (F3) improves slowly, and the value of F2 (F4) decreases rapidly. In addition to the judgment index discussed above, and considering the X-ray shielded by beryllium window, the beryllium window of miniature X-ray tube can be determined. Based on simulation analysis, the thickness of around 250 microm is appropriate to miniature X-ray tube applied in the in-situ EDXRF. Comparing the emitted spectrum with 50 microm-thick beryllium window, 71.66% of low-energy X-rays are shielded, only 21.31% of X-rays with energy from 5 to 50 keV is shielded, the intensity ratio of low-energy X-ray to total energy X-ray is less than 10%, and the intensity proportion of K-series X-ray to middle-high energy X-ray maintains a high level. In other words, when the mobile X-ray source with 250 microm beryllium window is used in the in-situ EDXRF, proportion of effective signal is higher, and effect of energy resolution of the detection is least; Moreover, the relative intensity of the excitation spectral scattering background, which is obtained by detection for specimen excitation analysis, will remain at low level, thus to ensure the precision of the result of element analysis. For the beryllium window in the application of radiation therapy, the thicker the better. At this time, low-energy X-ray flux maintains a high level, and it can ensure that radiation dose is concentrated on treatment tissue.

Thirteen rock samples were collected for studying the variation of element content in the mineral during the alteration process from Xinjiang, China. The IED-6000 in situ micro energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence developed by CDUT was applied to get chemical and physical data from minerals. The non-destructive spectrometer is based on a low-power Mo-anode X-ray tube and a Si-PIN peltier cooled X-ray detector. The unique design of the tube's probe allows very close coupling of polycapillary and makes the use of micro-area measurement feasible and efficient. The spectrometer can be integrated into any microscope for analysis. The long axis diameter of beam spot is about 110 microm. According to micro-EDXRF measurement, the tetrahedrite was corrected to pyrite, improving the efficiency and accuracy of the mineral identification. The feldspar of mineralized rock sample is rich in Cu and Zn which can be used as prospecting indicator elements. Element content of Cr, Mn and Co shows negative correlation with the degree of mineralization.

Climate change is likely to have marked ecological effects on terrestrial ecosystems, including the activities of insect pests. Most attention has focused on the increasing geographical ranges of pests; however, if extrinsic factors enhance their thermotolerance, populations may express increased voltinism and longer daily and annual activity periods. These changes in pest populations have the potential for severe consequences, including increased crop losses and decreased food security at the global level. The brown planthopper (BPH) Nilaparvata lugens Stål (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) is a serious pest of rice crops in temperate and tropical regions of Asia. It is often present in rice microclimates at temperatures close to its maximum thermotolerance. Recent BPH outbreaks in tropical Asia are considered to be associated with excess use of pesticides and increasing temperature. This study tested whether exposure to sublethal concentrations of triazophos (tzp), an insecticide widely used in Asian rice production, enhances thermotolerance of BPH. Tzp exposure (40 ppm at 40 °C) significantly decreased mortality (from 94% in controls to 50% at 48 h post-treatment) and increased lethal mean time (LT50 ) of adults by 17.2 h. To investigate the underlying molecular mechanism of this tzp-enhanced thermotolerance, we selected Hsp70 and Arginine kinase (Argk) for detailed study. Transcripts encoding both proteins in third-instar nymphs and brachypterous adult females were up-regulated, compared with controls, after exposure to tzp. RNAi silencing of both genes demonstrated that Hsp70 and Argk are essential for survival and tzp-increased thermotolerance. We propose that tzp induces thermotolerance in BPHs by increasing the expression of genes that act in cell protection mechanisms. The significance of our proposal relates to the importance of understanding the influence of sublethal concentrations of insecticides on pest biology. In addition to its influence on thermotolerance, tzp also enhances BPH reproduction. We infer that exposure to a pesticide stressor can produce cross-tolerance, that is, increased tolerance to one stressor also increases tolerance to other stressors, including temperature. Aside from needing a better understanding of these effects in nature and in other pest/cropping systems, we suggest that pest management programmes can be improved with better understanding of the influences of stressors, including increased environmental temperatures and sublethal concentrations of insecticides, on pest biology., (© 2013 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

In energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis technical analysis, the spectrum information processing has been being the focus of researches, spectrum smooth, peak-search, and peak area processing are the top priority, tA peak search method is based on simulated annealing algorithm principle, and to establish a new search peak model algorithm, this algorithm uses the advantages of the global convergence properties of simulated annealing and the Metropolis criterion is used as a peak valley judgment basis. A new decision criteria on peak valley array is used in this method, too. At the same time, convergence is taken from both ends of the spectrum channel address, it ends up when convergence reaches to the same optimal solution. This paper compared the algorithm with the simple comparison method, third derivative method, and the contrast experiment results, showing that this algorithm has a strong ability on X-ray fluorescence spectrum peak-search and a certain value in the actual production.

The transmission anode micro X-ray tube is a key component of energy dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Analysis (EDXRFA) as exciting source. So in EDXRFA we hope to get the primary X-ray spectrum which is simply distributed. In the present paper, the authors used the Monte Carlo (MC) method to study the spectrum character of the transmission anode micro X-ray tube with different thickness of target. We cut the spectrum into high energy (5keV-50keV) part and low energy (< 5 keV) part and compared them to each other. The result showed that the flux of high energy part is big and the flux of low energy part is small when the electron energy is 50 keV and the target is 4 microm thick Ag. This is better for EDXRFA.
