Caesalpinia bonduc is among the traditionally used plant in Benin, for its enhancement of male sexual activity. This study was undertaken to investigate the potential effect of C. bonduc root extracts on sexual behaviour of male Wistar rats. For that, thirty‐six rats were allocated into six groups and orally treated with dimethyl sulfoxide (control), Sildenafil citrate (standard) and C. bonduc root extracts (hexane, ethyl acetate, ethanol and methanol) orally for twenty‐eight days. Sexual behaviour parameters such as intromission frequency, intromission latency, mount latency and mount frequency were evaluated on day 0, 14 and 28. After the study completion, the body and reproductive organ weights as well as testicular histology and testosterone level were recorded. C. bonduc root extracts treatments had no significant effect on the body weight of rats. Enhancement in sexual behaviour was observed in ethanolic extract treated rats. An significant increase in mount frequency and intromission frequency as well as significant reduction in mount latency and intromission latency were noticed for ethanolic extract. The same extract caused an improvement in testosterone levels, relative testes weight and histological architecture. The findings demonstrate the aphrodisiac potential of C. bonduc root and lend support to the folkloric use as aphrodisiac. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: To overcome the spread of high pyrethroid resistance in the main malaria vectors and malaria disease persistence, it is crucial to look for effective and better resistance management strategies. Understanding the phenotypic profile of Anopheles gambiae sl. against alternatives insecticides like organophosphates and carbamates is crucial., Methods: Anopheles larvae and pupae were collected from the breeding sites in rice fields, pineapple crop areas, and peri-urban areas. WHO susceptibility tests were conducted on unfed female mosquitoes aged 3-5 days old. Mosquitoes were exposed to malathion 5%, pirimiphos-methyl 0.25%, and bendiocarb 0.1% using the standard WHO protocol. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques were used to detect species, kdr and Ace-1 mutations., Results: Anopheles gambiae sl. from Sèdjè-Dénou rice field population was resistant to bendiocarb (0.1%) with a mortality rate of 72.2% whereas Anopheles gambiae sl. populations from Zinvié-Dokomey (rice field), Zè-Tozounmè (pineapple field), and Adjagbo (peri-urban area) were suspected to be resistant with mortality rates of 90%, 93.5%, 95.4% respectively. However, all of them were susceptible to organophosphates (malathion and pirimiphos-methyl) with a mortality rate of 100%. PCR assay revealed that 100% of the mosquitoes tested were Anopheles coluzzii . The frequencies of Ace-1R mutation in all Anopheles coluzzii populations tested were low (3-27%)., Conclusions: Organophosphates (malathion and pirimiphos-methyl) have maintained their efficacy against Anopheles coluzzii populations from Sèdjè-Dénou (rice field), Zè Tozounmè (pineapple field), Zinvié Dokomey (rice field), or Adjagbo (peri-urban area). The good efficacy of these organophosphates against Anopheles coluzzii populations from the southern part of Benin are observed in the current study. Laxaphycin A (laxa A) and Laxaphycin B (laxa B), cyclic peptides isolated from the terrestrial blue-green alga Anabaena laxa or the marine cyanobacterium Lyngbya majuscula have antifungal and cytotoxic activities. We used numerical videomicrofluorometry and a protocol of multiple labelling with Hoescht 33342 (nuclear DNA), Rhodamine 123 (mitochondria) and Nile Red (plasma membrane) to study the cytotoxicity of these substances in human lymphoblastic cells sensitive (CEM-WT) or resistant (CEM-VLB and CEM-VM1) to anticancer agents. The results indicate a low resistance index of 2 for CEM-VLB cells treated with laxa B or laxa A + lava B. For the three cell strains, following laxa B treatment, we observed an increase of a polyploid cell subpopulation that could result from the alteration of topoisomerase-II activity. On the contrary, the simultaneous treatment by laxa A and laxa B led to a decrease of that subpopulation with increasing laxa A doses. However, the effect of laxa A was less pronounced in the CEM-VM1 cells, which present a low intrinsic topoisomerase-II activity. For CEM-VLB cells, the higher doses needed can be attributed to their MDR resistance. Though we observed a synergistic effect between laxa B and laxa A (the latter is inactive by itself), these results indicate a different mode of action for laxa B and laxa A + laxa B. A more precise study of the mode of action of these compounds is warranted.
